Next step up from Sr. Sysadmin?

2023.06.07 19:44 DifficultyPotato Next step up from Sr. Sysadmin?

I'm in the process of exiting one clusterf*ck of a company and making my way into a new one. I have a few offers on the table, and thankfully not any kind of rush to find the next job, so I'm taking a bit more time than I have in the past to make sure I'm doing this correctly.
Something I had not quite planned for- and am struggling with- is the sheer amount of position titles out there.
I kind of enjoy being a generalist- but I'm not sure if there's really a place to step up with that anymore. "Systems Architect" and "Systems Engineer" seem to have just as wide of a scope as "Sysadmin" did in the first place- they could literally mean anything.
Is there an answer to "Where should I go from here" for a generalist with a ton of specialized knowledge, too? (Basically, I tend to get very deeply into whatever systems I touch, and I can remember pretty much all of it when needed.)
Putting this in Spoiler tags for post brevity, but this is my background:
12 years in the industry. Primarily the "wears many hats" kind of IT guy- no specialized roles, SMB Hell sort of stuff. Had a good early part of my career go to infrastructure/wiring/Custom AV installation for people like Michael Jordan, Celine Dion, etc. This exposed me to a ton of different tech early on. Been doing Sysadmin/Helpdesk work since then- from helpdesk all the way to site engineering/reliability. I've been in several supervisory roles, but usually just over other techs. Also ran most of the IT/IS Governance meeting at my last job, as we were without a IT/IS manager for 4 months- things held togethemade progress pretty well during that time.
Advanced knowledge of these subjects:
Windows Admin
Linux Admin
365 Admin
VMWare Esxi
Powershell/Bash/any kind of scripting.
Automation (In general- I've worked with ansible/chef/terraform, but have a background in AV automation such as Crestron/Control4)
Comfortable/"I could probably get at least an entry level job doing JUST this right now"
Networking (CCNA/CCNE, though they aren't up to date at the moment. Also familiar with SonicWall, PFSense)
Full stack web development
Log Aggregation/SIEM (Graylog, Splunk, InfluxDB, ELK Stack, PRTG) setup, management & monitoring) (I have my Sec+, but no cybersec positions on my resume to speak of- just things I was responsible for under other titles.)
Lots of experience implementing QoS, troubleshooting VOIP/Video quality, WiFi Channelization (including Warehouse Environments)
Extensive knowledge of pretty much any kind of AV/PC connection or protocol and how it works from end to end.
*Numerous other technologies- it I list any more it's going to turn into my resume.*

I kind of like being the guy that everyone reaches out to for advice, but I don't know if it's ever going to make me the money I want.
Is there a straightforward path ahead for me- Or, is the only answer to specialize?

2023.06.07 19:44 bobisarocknewaccount List of GOOD things the Gang has done?

The nature of the show inherently invites fans to list and debate the worst things the Gang has ever done, and that's always very fun. But I want to play the game on the hardest difficulty and list the few times they've managed to do some good.
So that it's not too hard, we can include both times their intentions were noble even if the outcomes weren't, as well as times that they do something good accidentally. Generally, though, trying to stick to positive actions rather than just passive traits like "they're at least more moral than Pop-Pop".
Here are mine (spoilers for the latest season):
- Charlie gets a lot of these moments in season 1; he told the truth when the McPoyals falsely accused their old gym teacher, tried to confront a deadbeat dad about doing better by his kid; and in "Underage Drinking" provided a listening ear to the kid and actually being a good Prom chaperone (never being creepily attracted to her like Dennis and Dee to their "dates", but acting more like a big brother)
- though the execution was chaotic, their desire to wrestle for the troops seems to have come from a genuine place of wanting to help morale the veteran community
- going back for Charlie at the end of Season 15
- Frank, in trying to cause chaos, unintentionally made a four-way lane safer for motorists and pedestrians by adding stop signs; not good intentions, but a good outcome
- a reversal of the last one; genuinely tries to help the Waiter with his life in "The Gang Chokes"
- lobbyed Kickpuncher producers into making a film the fans would actually like
- Frank encouraging Mac to come out for his own sake, with no ulterior motive
- Frank giving his friends great gifts in the Christmas special, even if they were stolen by his old business partner
- Dee being a surrogate for Carmen and her husband; even if it might have been mostly for the money, she (an alcoholic) gave up drinking for nine months and put her body through pregnancy for them, and their smiles at seeing their new baby say it all
- Mac buying Dennis an RPG and Dennis acting like a greatful friend for once
- Dennis, Mac, and putting together a special birthday for Charlie after he has an emotional breakdown. Debatable intentions given it ended with them sending him back to Charlie work, but they seemed happy that he was touched by it
- Dennis going to North Dakota so his son could grow up with a father. It didn't last, but at the time was a sincere sentiment.

2023.06.07 19:35 Ok-Meeting363 Implicated in Forged Rabies Titer Test

I am friends with my two neighbors, who are international students from another country. They have a dog in the US, and they are trying to bring it back to their country this summer. They asked me to go with them to the animal hospital and to call the animal hospital several times to book appointments, translate, and just kind of help with the conversation overall, because they told me the animal hospital speaks too fast, and they're not confident they can catch everything being said or communicate effectively. I am bilingual in their language and English, so I essentially tagged along as a translator. All international health documents that were processed and needed for the dog, as well as all records of the dog with the animal hospital, are in the neighbors' names. the only time my name appears is in the emergency contact form of the animal hospital.
Got a call yesterday from the animal hospital. they said they turned in the pet documents to USDA for approval, and the USDA returned it saying that one of the form, a lab test (rabies titer test) is false, and that the dog did not actually pass the test. the animal hospital said they and the USDA have reported the matter and turned all THREE of our names into the "proper authorities," of which she mentioned the attorney general.
I obviously had no knowledge of any of the illegal activity and was pissed. I confronted the neighbors, they apologized, and I typed up a statement that essentially said I was just their neighbor, translator, and had nothing to do with or any knowledge of the illegal activity. I then had them signed this statement.
I feel quite uneasy. I am a US citizen and have a job here. the two neighbors are going to graduate next year, go back to their country and never come back. Any legal advice or anything else I should further do to cover my base? what would happen here? For reference, this is a major city in California.

2023.06.07 19:25 penguinstomper5678 My boyfriend has seizures and now I think he’s cheating

My boyfriend (20) has been having seizures , went through kidney failure, and coded in the hospital and was sent to the neuro icu. I (21) have been with him through all of it. He was kicked out of his parents house after his last seizure and has since moved in with me. We have been through so much. And I just saw him texting his ex. This has happened before and when I confronted him he said that he was “just checking in on her”. I don’t know what to do. I feel so overwhelmed. I struggle with ocd, clinical depression and generalized anxiety. I don’t know if I’m overreacting. And I don’t want it to be true because then how could I leave him after everything we’ve been through. We’re literally getting his liver and therapeutic range checked right now. Do I confront him ? And once I do then what ? I feel like I can’t talk to family or friends about this because I don’t want them to look at our relationship as anything other than perfect. Please help.

2023.06.07 19:16 oh-no-varies Perinatal Anxiety Workbook and Resources

I mentioned in the daily chat today that I had made this post in another sub and several of you expressed it would be helpful. I also wanted to share some context and my experience, so anyone struggling knows they are not alone.
With my first full pregnancy (IVF), I struggled a lot with perinatal anxiety and depression. I was afraid to go on medications because I was terrified of anything that I thought could harm the baby (part of my anxiety and infertility PTSD). Unfortunately, things got very bad for me (OCD anxiety, invasive thoughts etc). I got support from a reproductive health psychiatrist, and it made a huge difference for me. However, I was pretty late in preganancy getting help and unfortunately, I did get pretty severe post-partum depression and anxiety as well.
This pregnancy I remained on my SSRI and it has made a world of difference. With my first I thought I could suffer through it but now I realize, I didn't have to suffer to begin with.
Treating perinatal anxiety and depression can help prevent PPD/PPA. SSRIs are safe and effective for pregnancy.
I am very lucky to be a patient at one of Canada's leading Women's hospitals, with a dedicated centre to reproductive mental health. I am not a doctor but these are resources directly from them:
If you are wondering whether your anxiety is "normal" or might benefit from extra support, here is a link to the standard PPD/PPA assessment criteria.
Edinburgh Postnatal Depression and Anxiety Questionnaire) Link with quiz and scoring guide for self-assessment. This is also used for perinatal (pregnancy) depression and anxiety
Here is a helpful info sheet on perinatal anxiety, what it is, and different support and management options https://reproductivementalhealth.ca/sites/default/files/uploads/resources/files/treatment_fact_sheet_-_generalized_anxiety_disorder_in_the_perinatal_period.pdf
I am also including a link to a free PDF download workbook for perinatal/postnatal anxiety from one of Canada's leading Women's and Children's hospitals. This is a really helpful resource, especially if you don't have easy access to specialized reproductive mental health support.
Perinatal anxiety workbook (free PDF) from BC Women's Hospital Reproductive Mental Health
I hope this post helps you if you are struggling with this.

2023.06.07 19:10 Boop108 Trying To Make Sense Of The Garbage Pail Kids Movie

This article contains a lot of film stills. For a fully illustrated version please click here - https://filmofileshideout.com/archives/trying-to-make-sense-of-the-garbage-pail-kids-movie/
I think the best place to begin is with the Cabbage Patch Kids craze. I was in junior high when the round-faced little dolls hit the shelves. They weren’t for “sale” but, for a “fee”, you could “adopt” one at a store. They came with adoption papers and everything. That was 1982. The year Michael Jackson’s Thriller came out, and Blade Runner and Tootsie were in the theaters.
Five years earlier, there was a different and seemingly unconnected craze. Everyone wanted Wacky Packs. They were stickers that were packaged in paper like baseball cards. For 5 cents, you got a pack of 3 cards along with a disgusting sheet of tasteless pink crap they called bubble gum. Each card satirized common household products like Doritos and Ivory Soap. They were surprisingly transgressive, and several of them had to be recalled due to cease-and-desist orders from the product manufacturers.
Believe it or not, Wacky Packs were the brainchild of Pulitzer Prize-winning author and artist Art Spiegelman, the creator of Raw Magazine and Maus.
Then in 1985, Spiegelman used the grotesque style of Wacky Packs to create a parody of The Cabbage Patch Kids called The Garbage Pail Kids. Like Wacky Packs, The Garbage Pail Kids came in a pack with the same nasty gum. Both Wacky Packs and The Garbage Pail Kids were printed by The Tops Trading Card Company.
Garbage Pail Kids images took the sweetness and innocence of Cabbage Patch Dolls and used them as a straight-man against the growing cynicism of the 1980s. If you watch movies from the 80s, children were often portrayed as wise beyond their years, jaded, and more street-smart than adults. Think of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Back To The Future, and Punky Brewster.
At some point, Topps even came out with their own line of dolls. Predictably, they were sued by the Cabbage Patch people and so had to alter the dolls. The cards were also banned in many schools across America, and completely banned in Mexico. The television cartoon was kept off the airwaves for decades. On the surface, people may have been reacting to the gross images, but surely the transgressive nature of the parodies was a factor as well.
Spiegelman was an “underground” comic artist like Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton. They were all essentially writing subversive stories about hippies, druggies, alienated miscreants, and freaks. Not the sort of people America wanted its children hanging out with, but I had stacks of all of them hidden in my dresser. Underground comics, Mad Magazine, Bugs Bunny, Bob Dylan, Penthouse, and The Sex Pistols are to blame for who I am today. How’s that for a dating profile?
Then came the idea to turn The Garbage Pail Kids cards into a movie. I do not know exactly whose idea it was, but they had to have been inspired by the release of the 1984 movie Gremlins, if by “inspired”, you mean jealous of the money Gremlins raked in. Gremlins was a blockbuster hit, and at the risk of offending its legion of cult followers, it was terrible. Regardless, it wormed its way deep inside 80s culture. I still remember yelling “bright light, bright light” on several occasions, along with “oooouuuuch” and “phone home” from ET (insert facepalm).
Garbage Pail Kids is mostly a cheap retreading of the Gremlins movie. It has the same stupid humor, the same bad practical effects, the same everything, except that The Garbage Pail Kids Movie has a musical number smack dab in the middle. All of a sudden, the fart jokes and snot splatter give way to a saccharine Barney-esque sing-song-march. It’s nauseating. All the nasty little foam-faced trolls sing, “We can do anything by working with each other.”
The “kids” sing while they slave away making a set of fashionable clothing for a young boy named Dodger. Dodger wants to impress Tangerine, a young woman, who is maybe 18 years old. She needs the outfits for her fashion show. Dodger is only 14, but Tangerine leads him on by implying she is willing to do things with him that would constitute statutory rape. It’s super creepy.
The “kids” are working with sewing machines that they stole from a sweatshop. How do I know it was a sweatshop? Those were the words printed on the sign hanging in the window. Strangely, there is a whole theme of sweatshops and exploitative labor practices throughout the film.
Cabbage Patch Dolls were first made in Cleveland, Georgia, although the box claimed that each doll was “born” at Babyland General Hospital. Once the trend took off, manufacturing was outsourced to China. There is something surreal about Chinese children making dolls of children for American children to adopt. It’s even stranger when you consider that some of those Chinese children will grow up to give birth to children that Americans will adopt for real.
Then there is the additional oddity of naming the film’s child protagonist Dodger. Another child laborer who was forced to pick pockets and surrender the profits to his adult boss Fagin.
80s films often have snippets of counterculture strung through them. The Garbage Pail Kids Movie begins with a strange speech given by a fatherly antique shop owner named Captain Manzini. He is Dodger’s mentor and while Manzini shows Dodger a Japanese fan, he pontificates, “Like me, this is a relic from a simpler age. When good and bad was black and white, and a man could settle all his differences with one of these (holding up a fencing foil). Then some damn fool invented gunpowder, and a bigger damn fool split the atom. That’s when I decided to leave mankind to its folly and retire here into this world of memories.”
This from a film that also happens to have at least 9 fart jokes. Big, loud, long fart jokes, and vomit, and pimples, Oh, and urine, lots and lots of urine. They are Garbage Pail Kids, after all, their whole existence is predicated on being messy and gross. Like Mad Magazine, Wacky Packs, and The Bad News Bears before them, and The Simpsons, Married with Children, and Family Guy after them, they all harbor hostility toward the mainstream and use society’s hang-ups as a target.
If the humor of The Garbage Pail Kids Movie is transgressive, the overall message is not. The end of the movie ties up all its conflicts and affirms society’s mores and norms. The quartet of street thugs that harassed and beat up poor Dodger are punished. Dodger dumps the duplicitous Tangerine, and the Garbage Pail Kids are set free.
The counterculture heroizing of these grotesque kids is softened with a message about accepting everyone’s physical appearance. When Dodger realizes that his sexy Tangerine is a sociopath, he rejects her, saying he no longer sees her as “beautiful.” Emphasizing the value of inner beauty over outward appearances.
This message about “true beauty” is hammered home several more times before the movie is over. In the last act, The Garbage Pail Kids are arrested and carted away to The State Home for the Ugly. Once incarcerated, they are put in a cell with a sign that reads “Too Ugly.” Other cells have signs that read “Too Fat,” “Too Skinny,” and “Too Hairy.” The moral is hard to miss.
The film is a little reminiscent of Tod Browning’s 1932 film Freaks. The Garbage Pail Kids are outcasts like Browning’s freaks, and both groups meet out harsh justice when the time comes. Of course, The Garbage Pail Kids don’t mutilate their victims, but they do vomit on them. The important difference is that Freaks ends in vengeance and darkness, whereas The Garbage Pail Kids Movie ends with everything happily resolved by love and fairness.
So, who wrote and directed this disasterpiece? It was Rod Amateau! You may not recognize his name, but he was responsible for a show so stupid and annoying that I hated it even when I was a little kid, Gilligan’s Island. Fortunately, Amateau is no longer with us, but in 2012, the devil himself, Michael Eisner, threatened to bring civilization to its knees by remaking Garbage Pail Kids using CGI. Fortunately, we dodged that bullet, but keep your peepers peeled, you never know what that man might be up to.
One last thing. A fellow friend and cinephile heard I was writing this article and decided to ask Chat GPT to write a positive review of The Garbage Pail Kids Movie. This is what it said:
"I am sorry, but as an AI language model, I cannot provide a positive review of 'The Garbage Pail Kids Movie'. This film is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made, and its content is often considered inappropriate and offensive. It would not be ethical or responsible to promote such a film.”

Pope Francis is undergoing hernia-related surgery at A. Gemelli University Hospital in Rome and is expected to remain in the hospital for several days.
The procedure: The Pope will undergo "a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery under general anesthesia," according to Vatican News. * The surgery decision came after Pope Francis complained of abdominal pain and was examined by his medical team and doctors at Gemelli Hospital.
Previous health issues: This surgery comes nearly two years after the Pope had abdominal surgery to remove half of his colon, resulting in a 10-day hospital stay. * Pope Francis also spent four days in the same hospital earlier this year for respiratory problems stemming from bronchitis.
Upcoming events: The Pope's latest hospital stay comes about one month before he is scheduled to travel to Portugal for a five-day visit to commemorate World Youth Day.

2023.06.07 18:33 S_T_R_A_T_O_S [TotK] We should talk about the bosses. (MEGA SPOILERS)

As the title says, obvious spoilers for the boss fights AS WELL AS the Depths.
I am absolutely in love with the temple boss fights in TotK. I was initially worried that they would be more similar to the Blights in BotW: challenging and interesting but repetitive in terms of design. Suffice it to say that my expectations were blown out of the water. I'm going to explain what I love about each boss.
Colgera - Wind Temple
Colgera was my first major boss of the game and he blew me away, no pun intended. This boi is absolutely massive and his soundtrack is one of the best in the game, bar none. His design is hard to pin down in terms of inspiration but the insect/sea-creature sort of vibe is unmistakable. Having a major boss fight take place entirely in the air was a great idea and really makes use of the skydive mechanic (even though I used arrows). This guy is very easy to cheese but I thought everything about the fight and his design was gorgeous. As a side note, stumbling upon him in the Depths was horrifying at first due to his sheer size. I definitely recommend fighting him in near-darkness as it really ups the intensity.
Marbled Gohma - Fire Temple
Monsieur Gohma was such a dynamic surprise after the maze that is the Fire Temple. His design is fantastic and I appreciate how it harkens back to some older LoZ enemies (this is probably true for more of the bosses than just him, but I'm not very well-versed). His voice is UNREAL. There's so much character in his voice and his attack sounds that you forget that he's basically a big rock covered in Ganon-goo. I love how smug he sounds after launching his rocks at you and I appreciated that the "intended" mechanics in his fight force you to be a bit creative with Recall/Ascend/WHY'D YOU DO IT. His arena and the second stage of his fight were fantastic and I only wish that his Depths versions were able to go upside-down; it makes them quite a bit easier to fight when their arena is as tiny as it is down there.
Mucktorock - Water Temple
I could write an essay on this funny guy. I've seen a lot of derision toward him, which is fair, as he is quite annoying to fight. But I am obsessed with his soundtrack (especially how whimsical it gets when he runs away from you in the first phase) and the general atmosphere of his fight. Fighting him after Gohma and Colgera and realizing that he is just a little dude riding a shark added so much... unpredictability? to his fight. The increase in speed and intensity throughout the battle, especially as you start to get bogged down in sludge, was a welcome surprise. I think Mucktorock is hugely underrated as a boss, which makes sense after how simple the Water Temple was.
Queen Gibdo - Lightning Temple
So, so cool. "Queen" is right. I love everything about her design and arena, down to the funny little tip-toe sidestep she does and the horrifying charges she attempts. She has it all, truly. I appreciate that this fight forces you to prioritize: tackle the hives and get shredded by the occasional tornado, or get chased Looney-Tunes style around the arena while focusing on the boss. This one was definitely the most difficult of the 4 "main" temple bosses in my eyes, which was a fitting end to the temple that I had the most trouble with. I included her (as well as Colgera) in my Monster Gallery and it definitely helps spruce Tarrey Town up a bit.
Seized Construct - Spirit Temple
The word of the day is Hype. I completed the Spirit Temple before activating the Fifth Sage quest, so everything involved here was an incredible surprise to me. Equally surprising was how much trouble I had with the boss. Their size and intelligence (e.g. knowing to block) made this fight more than a little intimidating. No less intimidating was the fact that they pummeled me far more than I was able to pummel them, though I blame Mineru's Construct for that. The entire design of the boss and the arena -- the boxing motif was SUCH a good idea, even if it was later co-opted by Kohga -- made this boss infinitely worth the slog of reaching it. A very, very worthy penultimate boss fight for those that completed the main story "in order".
I hope other players agree that the bosses in TotK were some of the best in the series and far more creative than those in BotW. I'm not even going to get into Ganondorf as he deserves his own post; the temple bosses in and of themselves were far and away some of the peak moments I had playing this game and I'm glad that Nintendo gave us the opportunity to face them again in the Depths. I'm interested in input on how everybody enjoyed the bosses.

2023.06.07 18:19 patera_milk SIB the Last Guardian (no spoilers please)

Without citing anything specific about the plot, will the Last Guardian make me ugly cry? I love Fumito Ueda's work in general, but all the key art from this game seems heartbreaking. I don't doubt that I will like it, I just want to know what sort of emotional gauntlet I am signing up for.
Relevant sidenote: I have an old dog who is my best friend.
(I know this topic has been brought up before, but I don't want to open anything with spoilers)

2023.06.07 18:17 Equivalent_Photo_387 AITAH for hating when my husbands mother to visit him in the hospital.

My (40f) husband (48m) is currently in the hospital. He’s been in here for almost a month. I’m by his side every single day for 8hrs. His family barely comes as they assume the can get any information through me, which obviously they will. When his mother comes to visit she makes everything about her, yells at the doctors for not doing more for her son (they’re doing everything they can) and just generally causes unnecessary stress on my husband. Before he was in the hospital my husband and his mother were low contact at best but he’s never said no to having her visit him. Obviously I would NEVER say she couldn’t but AITAH for hating when she comes to visit? Apologies for the formatting/grammar errors, I’m awful at writing things out and English isn’t my first language. Thank you.

2023.06.07 18:14 pacificpacifist Teasers good, leaks/spoilers bad

Don't you want to experience DD2 for yourself, firsthand? I feel as overwhelmingly excited as you do, but that excitement stems from the idea that I will get to play the game and experience it myself, without already knowing what is going to happen.
We shouldn't encourage leaks as they delve into spoiler territory. I would suggest that even modern trailers show too much (although this is mostly movie trailers) and nearly become spoilers themselves. Thus I exercise delicate care in avoiding spoilers of the media I digest at any given moment, and DD2 is no different. I suggest you all do the same.
I thought the trailer Capcom showed at the Sony showcase was perfect. However, I feel slight apprehension about the upcoming Capcom showcase, due to the possibility of spoilers! It is not out of character for a company to essentially jump the gun and show major aspects of their game/movie in order to generate hype, at the risk of hampering the actual experience and the value of narrative reveals occurring with the intended context and timing. Of course, I do trust Capcom and the DD2 dev team to avoid this issue.
You should consider my thoughts when approaching the Capcom showcase and when approaching possible leaks in general. When the Capcom showcase ends, will you shout, "show us more!" or will you understand that the desire you feel for more content is the exact point of teasers and you just feel rightly hyped?
TL;DR: Prioritize your actual experience of DD2 over your willingness to jump the gun and see spoilers, even if given the opportunity.
Edit: This is not limited to narrative spoilers. For example, I believe that someone in their first playthrough of DD should not be initially aware of the vocational intricacies e.g. the fact that augments cross over between vocations, vocation-specific xp gain, etc. These should be things the player discovers partially through the game and then can draw upon in the future. I think that developers put a lot of thought and intent into the stratified discovery of their game's mechanics, and gameplay spoilers would contradict this vision.

I’m mocking Catholics that irrationally hate Francis because he’s not like the medieval Pope’s who ruled with an iron fist.

2023.06.07 18:03 helloJellowoo Is it appropriate to wear these heels?

Hi everyone, throwaway account to avoid identification.
I just wanted to ask if it’s deemed appropriate to wear heels as a female in the hospital?
The heels I want to wear: https://eu.christianlouboutin.com/uk_en/pigalle-black-3080680bk01.html
I’ll bring in some trainers in case I get tired etc, but I really want to wear heels, everyone I see nowadays looks scruffy af with unironed scrubs and hair in a messy bun, I’m not judging them but not really my style, I hate uniform and undone hair lol, just generally isn’t a professional look.
What do u all think, I’m very junior btw :)
