Like others, I'd like to repay valuable advice and info gleaned from this sub. Unlike many on Reddit, we're getting up in years (M 73, F 70). That didn't keep us from doing just about anything younger people might do. You might consider passing this report along to your parents or other older folks who might be hesitant about taking an independent trip to Japan.
Here are a few highlights before getting to more detailed info in Part Two.
Biggest surprises: The quiet. We never had a noisy hotel experience. People on subways and trains are famously silent and when a car honked near us in Kamakura, a tourist town south of Tokyo, it was a shock. The pace of change. For a country renowned for cutting-edge technology, it still clings to some traditional ways. That goes for more modern habits, like masking (still around 90% in Tokyo subways on our last day), and the bottles of hand sanitizer in every shop doorway, restaurant and other public places. Cash isn't king but we definitely needed it, even in Tokyo. Fortunately, getting it was extremely easy. Food was even better than advertised. We're not extreme foodies but we like a good meal; we never had a bad one in four weeks. The famously efficient transit system was even easier and better than imagined. Taking luggage on subways and trains was never a problem (though we were careful to avoid the worst of rush hour). We took fewer taxis than expected, though when we did they were lifesavers.
Especially for Geezers: Our main concession to age was avoiding late nights out.
We're in reasonably good health, though one of us has minor knee issues. Escalators and elevators eased our way, occasionally, in public transit, but there was no getting around the ubiquitous stairs. We logged up to 6-to-8 mile (or more) walking days, sometimes going non-stop from morning 'til evening.
Two pair of comfortable shoes are a good idea, though advice about wearing slip-ons or shoes that don't require tying the laces is perhaps overdone. I wore my regular Nike jogging shoes and my partner chose On (for the elastic laces).
Before leaving home, we took long walks. Don't forget to go up and down as many stairs as you can find.
If you do your homework, you can find your way around on your own. The awesome power of the smartphone and the proliferation of signs in English or Romaji, especially in cities, has vastly eased Japan travel for us gringos (and other gaijin).
Here's one tip I haven't seen here: Arguably the best of the old Japan guidebooks in English, "Gateway to Japan" (last published in the 1990s), is now available in a digital edition. I downloaded it (for $10US) to the (free) Kindle app on my smartphone and my iPad. It has all the usual guidebook stuff, including good, historical info and smart ratings on places to see, plus walking tours and shopping and eating advice. It has embedded links to Google Maps that ease navigation. But please note: it isn't updated as frequently as other sources, so be sure to double-check with Japan Guide (or other online sites) on opening times, fees, etc.
One other pre-trip tip: If you're like me, you may be resistant to absorbing often mind-numbing background on the history, culture and traditions of another country. Shogun, the 1986 bestselling novel by James Clavell (later a motion picture), is an easy way to fix that problem for Japan. Get a library copy or cheap used paperback online. It's very long, but a page turner. And except for a plot device or two, it's a remarkably accurate portrayal of a key turning point in Japan's development. If you take the time to read it--and you should--you'll be surprised to discover when you get to Japan that you have a useful understanding of the people and society of today's Japan.
Trip prep: We're fairly experienced international travelers, less so in Asia. I spent six months in the pre-trip phase--which paid dividends in cheaper hotel rooms and tickets to hard-to-get attractions.
I did minimal language prep (about 10 half-hour lessons of Pimsleur's basic Japanese, borrowed from the library) and wish I'd done more. But even that paid massive rewards. Don't be an Ugly American; learn and use the basic courtesy words and phrases frequently mentioned on this site. It's easy and goes a long, long way. My favorite party trick was Gochisōsamadeshita ("thank you for the meal"), which never failed to elicit a polite response--sometimes a giggle--from restaurant staff.
I'd also underscore three vital tips often found here: Keep your voice down, walk on the left and don't blow your nose in public.
To narrow our options, I browsed many recent, general guidebooks (from the library) and online sites like Japan Guide and this one. I used Google Docs to compile itinerary and background info (the main itinerary document was about 25 pages long). During the trip, Japan Guide was our go-to reference for up-to-date info and links to individual attractions.
What we brought or bought: A sling bag and auxiliary smartphone battery (Anker MagGo for iPhone). I usually ran out of juice on my phone by midday, so the extra battery was a godsend. A stack of old-fashioned cotton handkerchiefs came in handy, since paper products like tissues are quite thin. We bought tiny folding umbrellas at Family Mart and stashed them in our sling bags on rainy days, along with a plastic bag to protect them when wet; they never failed us.
What we brought or bought and didn't need: Yes, it's hard to find places to toss your trash (heed the warnings on this sub) but advice about bringing plastic bags with you seems unnecessary. You can get bags at konbinis and other stores (they may charge a few pennies); we ended up tossing excess plastic bags at the end of the trip.
We brought little cloth hand towels, widely used by Japanese people, since public toilets often don't have ways to dry your hands. But we never actually used them.
Best apps and websites for getting around: Japan Travel from Navitime, loaded before leaving home. Along with Google Maps and the built-in compass feature on the phone, it made getting around a breeze. We loaded the Smart-Ex app for booking bullet trains before leaving and got our first train tickets at a discount.
Best of all, an IC card. We put Suica in our Apple Wallet, loaded with some yen before leaving home, and loved it. Be advised: Suica and Smart-Ex sometimes conflict in real life, requiring help from station personnel to get you through the gate. If you want to avoid that, download and print the QR code for your train ticket.
The Japan Meteorological Agency website and Weather dot com offer very reliable, up-to-date forecast info.
Cellphones: For various reasons, we used a combination of Verizon's fairly new $100 International Monthly Plan (250 minutes of phone, 250 messages and unlimited highspeed data for first 20GB) and Ubigi's $17 eSim. The Verizon was a mixed bag; it did let me use my phone as a hotspot but the quality of the signal depended on the local partner; I counted at least three--SoftBank, au and Docomo. I switched between my cellular plans, depending on signal strength in a location. Using my phone exclusively for navigation and web searching, I never hit the Verizon limit and needed about half the Ubigi 10GB.
Getting there: We chose to fly Premium Economy for the first time, mainly for comfort on the 13-hour flight, and found it worth the considerable extra expense. We're also glad we went non-stop (ANA), even though it meant spending the first night in Tokyo before zipping off to Kyoto.
Expenses: About $15K (USD) for 28 nights, not including airfare to and from Japan. This was our first overseas trip in more than 3.5 years, due to the pandemic, so we splurged a bit.
We spent almost a month and only scratched the surface. How we went about picking places to stay, see or eat, and some of the ones we especially liked, will be highlighted in Part II of this report, coming soon.

Many maps are using the shape of todays landmasses and seas and make maps of them about history. But of course the shape of a land can change over millenias and even over century (see the example of the Netherlands below or think about the perisan golf or the ligustinus sea) Is there any place where I can find accurate maps of each time or even an interactive atlas?

So I started playing Ancestors a few days ago and I have now made my final evolution leap to “beat” the game for the first time. I add quotations because I’m still trying to unlock all remaining neurons, evolutionary feats, and in-game trophies. I’ve hit a bit up a bump in the road though. I noticed that BEFORE I decided to make my final leap my clan stopped producing genetic mutations in the new babies that would be born from generation to generation. I spammed like 20 generations worth of offspring before accepting that maybe the game was through giving me mutations through my offspring and the rest would have to be gained through actions preformed throughout the world. So my main question is, is it possible to screw up the game to where it becomes absolutely 100% impossible to unlock some of the neurons that state they require a genetic mutation to unlock or is it a matter of that I haven’t performed specific tasks that it takes to unlock the mutations that are currently locked due to the lack of mutations in my children. I ask because despite performing the specific task it should take to mature or train this neuron that I’m aiming to unlock, nothing happens. For those curious, the specific mutation is Locus of Focus (ZO 03) [according to the Neuron Tree Map on the Fandom website] that I’m mostly concerned with. Can I only unlock that mutation while I’m CURRENTLY in the Ardipithecus Ramidus period of evolution and then it’s lost if I haven’t unlocked it? It may be worth mentioning that I have discovered and interacted with all meteorite locations as I am aware they are huge mutation boosters. I can provide any additional information needed as well. Thanks!
~TL;DR~ Is it possible to be permanently locked out of earning certain neuron connections due to player based decisions or should I be able to unlock all of them eventually no matter what?

So I'm playing barb and really enjoying it so far - level 66. Story is good, world is good, side quests are great! I actually love the level scaling as it puts more time and thought into items not just power leveling and smashing through the game. I don't mind the gaps in mobs when roaming the world but maybe an increase in some dungeons would be nice, not by adding more small mobs but making larger mobs more spread out an area, so you pull them into each other. in the open world its fine as it makes me look at the world instead of the monsters.
Nightmare dungeons
Gets very boring after awhile but the challenge keeps you going back? Or is it just because its the only real option of its kind. Needs some work.
I think if you beat a tier of a dungeon you should be able to have that unlocked and the affixes available to choose from. Get a key of sorts. So the point of beating higher dungeon tiers remains the same (rewards etc) but you also have a dungeon you like with good affixes to "farm" - higher item drops, gold find etc that you can go back to. You will out scale it but its nice to farm if looking for items to increase your power. Maybe cap this at a certain tier, can cause problems at endgame leaderboards etc.
Maybe add a rouge like option? or game mode? You go down the dungeon and pick buffs and debuffs. Or add elemental type damage to certain skills etc as you progress and go deeper. Keeps changing every run and makes them feel unique.
Have a menu or list to see which nightmare tiers you have completed. good to see rewards I've missed you get when beating a new tier.
Helltides
Fun! great concept but not rewarding enough, these should have increasing drop chances and increasing difficulty. Eg. going for a specific ring - current cost is 75 as you farm and as you collect more shards you can invest the shards into the chest to change the tier. So 75 is tier 1 with "x" drop rate (sometimes you get garbage from the box)you can choose to increase the tier by "buying" and moving to tier 2 and so on. costs 85 shards now and increased drop chance and more items. Have limited time with the helltides so I think this will be more rewarding for the player and more focused on speed and the time of the event running out. Very much a risk reward here. Get to tier 4 and the time runs out as you just don't have enough shards and can't open the box. :(

Towns
Great! - leave them alone (don't get why people are complaining about traveling between vendors etc)
Horse
Bit clunky - need to improve pathing (does feel good when you get it right though and are flying through the world)
Remove cooldown if you dismount on purpose.
Able to level up horse as you ride around to get another boost? Often you need just one more boost.
Reduce the speed at which the horse slows down after a boost ends, make it more gradual.
Skills
Happy but I think they should add a few more skills - not a new "branch" but maybe some longer improvements on each or a few more branches off each skill. More variety in choices and different gameplay options. Probably come with time.
Paragon Board
Can't quite put my finger on it but feels like its missing something. I like the concept. Maybe they need to add some unique runes or something that changes up a skill or something. Not just percentage gains and reductions but I'm not sure here tbh.
Items
Good, enjoying so far. Drop rate is very good! When you start to complete your build it feels very rewarding after grinding for hours but need to add more legendary's and tweak some that are terrible. I think the seasons will fix this though and as the game goes on.
Add a gem pocket! for the love of god. Increase the sale price of gems also?
Scale back the gold cost increase on rerolling enchants, should still increase but not so quickly. I think should also increase gold dropping in the world from mobs so you don't have to keep picking up everything to sell. Just tweak the world tiers percentage gain? Seen as you need to improve your gear consistently as the world scales you need to role better gear more often.
Barb class
Increase barb weapon mastery to 20 from 10 but scale back each level and buff 20 a bit more than 10. I finished them very quickly and they are very cool to see improve as you play. Not sure on other classes yet.
Chest or storage box
Search function
A tab you can create that's the layout of your equipment slots for your character - I can put in there for upgrades I'm wanting to do but don't have the right affix maybe - or need more of those shards to put sockets etc currently just make my own in the box. Quite useful.
Wardrobe/Transmog
Allow us to transmog uniques?
Add more colours to choose from?
allow us to change colours of weapons?
Tree of whispers
Good concept but should allow choice of all available gear boxes instead of three but make the legendary type box still random. Eg - there is a ring I'm hunting for, I can keep going for rings. Doing the challenges for the tree doesn't feel rewarding enough but if this was available i would be consistently running them if I need a certain type of gear.
PVP event thing - I haven't done it and probably won't so don't have an opinion on it, yet.
Gameplay
Option to adjust scaling of zoom on minimap. Just a bit too close sometimes. This might help with people complaining about no overlay. I don't care for the overlay - happy how it is - keeps me looking at the world and not a map.
Interactive map - allow us to select and search what we looking for.

Had our group of 4 ready to go and session 0 was done and the DM had to step away permanently because life does its thing. We are open to having a 5th but we already have our characters made and have interacted a small amount in the Northlook bar. On offer is a full roll20 catalog including the book, dynamic lighting, premade maps, The Ythrin Towers map pack and Danger in the Dwarven valley addons. All of these are already in the game for the DM to be able to read them.
Our party is currently made up of a Goblin (MMoM) Rogue, Firbolg Nature cleric, Dhampir Paladin and Human Divination Wizard.
Of note all players are 18+ as checked by the createor of the post. The following requirements were met to sign up for the game.
A mixed balance of both Roleplay and Combat favorably leaning towards the Roleplay
Simple Table Etiquette (Respecting players, 0 Politics from outside the game, Allowing others to share in the gameplay, ETC)
Access to all sourcebooks on roll20, Access to the Dunamancy subclasses and spells, and Access to Matthew Mercer's Blood Hunter class. (This was supplied by myself to the game meaning that the chracactermancer works and spells can be drug and dropped.)

I get the pvp was going to be an unbalanced 1 shot mess so I'm not hear to moan about that, In fact I have like 1 kill under my belt and about 30 deaths so it is what it is.

But the map size...what the actual fuck is the map size for pvp? I was expecting an entire zone for pvp but instead we get a tiny section of a zone barely the size of a 2p coin. The pvp could be much more intense and fun if they gave us an entire zone, a little bit like the division with the fact that more PvE focused players who just want red dust to unlock cosmetics can try and rat their way around the zone instead of fight.
Instead as it is, you leave the zone and within 5 seconds you have an entire 4 man on top of you not even letting you in, Same for when starting a ritual...you have to wait an entire 50 seconds yet it can take a well geared rogue 30 seconds to cross the entire map and be on top of you.
I know pvp was never going to be a major focus of the game, but why add a ton of cosmetics, horses etc to it if you're going to make it easily griefable?

Hi all, I dont know what happend to my steam deck sd, or my CEMU installation, but now everytime i load BOTW (an end game save) all shrines and towers are deactivated and i cant interact with them, also they do not show in the map like no srhine or tower was discovered. Starting a new game doesnt fix it, i can get to the 1st tower and activate it, cutscene plays just fine, but then when tower data is downladed to sheika slate map is shown but not tower icon.
Using the same save game in a windows pc works just fine.
I tried reinstalling CEMU from emuDeck.
I tried cleaning shaderCache
I tried fresh copying game files + updates + dlc to the SDCard again without luck
I tried fresh save data
Nothing seems to work
This happend all of a sudden.
Game works just fine, only shrines and towers are orange (like to be discovered) but they dont respond, there is no action to interact with them. And also they dont show up on the map.
Please help
