Disabling the private construction queue:
Before anything, I have to say that I didn't know that if you disabled the private construction queue, you got the private investment pool to spend yourself. Considering that, disabling the private construction queue is somewhat a cheat, since it provides power to the player that it wouldn't have in a normal playthrough. I don't think there is anything wrong with using it, if you prefer, I also disabled defensive pacts in CK2, for instance, but I won't consider it in this post. I will only consider the economic laws, their private construction queue allocation and their impact on gameplay.
Private investors investing in dead buildings:
The other thing I didn't know was that there is a known bug which makes the private investors build unproductive buildings. Naturally, that makes them less efficient, but I still have somethings to say, even then.
First of all, there are not that many downsides with having a dead building in a province. An unlucrative farm could take the arable land of a lucrative one and there is a fixed infrastructure cost for each production building in a state, no matter if they are working or not. However, I have trouble imagining situations where you'd need to minmax your arable land, and for the infrastructure cost to be a problem you'd need your investors to repeatedly build bad stuff in a single state, and even then, a single railway could solve multiple bad investments.
Not only that, but bad buildings won't always be bad buildings. Small arms, for instance will spend most of the time being unlucrative to produce, but whenever you have to mobilize your conscripts, you'll be glad that you have those empty factories ready to pump out some guns. Same thing for most other buildings.
Also, I have trouble believing some of the stories I read where the private investors supposedly built 10s of levels of an unproductive building in a province. Possible? Sure, but unlikely, and it is much more probable that the construction WAS lucrative at some point and stopped being so later.
Controlling the economy:
The other impression I had is that people feel like they need to have a much bigger control over their economy than it is really necessary. In my campaigns I feel like it tastes a few years at most to balance out your construction and government goods. Those are the literal only IMMEDIATE goods that you should vamp up production. Naturally later you're gonna want to make all goods cheap so your pops can raise their SoL, but how much of your direction does that need? My experience is that trying to pump out a lot of civillian goods so they become cheaper has a limit, because as their price drops, the factories quickly start to have a rough time pulling a profit.
Buildings in states with not enough pops:
I also heard people complaining about private projects spending all the free labor in a province, but having more jobs than potential employees is not a bad thing. Once buildings have to fight for employees, they will start pumping their wages up in order to fill out their capacity. Naturally, higher wages means a higher SoL. Yes, that may have a negative impact if those other buildings are competing with the ones that produce government goods, but the prices can only rise so much, because once the price of a government good rises, their factories become more lucrative and can raise their wages higher, which will balance the price out.
Weak starts:
Of course, people were quickly to point out about how it's absolutely necessary to have only the most lucrative buildings in their Traansval Anarcho-Monarchist world conquest speedrun, which I imagine certainly is the case, but how often will you be playing with such a harsh start? Any player run will eventually end up with the player becoming a major or even great power, and by then.
Even if you were starting with a particularly weak nation and really needed the construction, you would have to be playing a country that is simultaneously weak but has a weirdly strong capitalist base that can build more stuff than the government, and I doubt there is any case of that in the game.
Laissez-Faire is just the best law in the game:
If I wasn't right enough before, someone made a post today showing how laissez-faire was the best economic system for reivesting wealth in the economy while command economy was the best in destroying wealth. So even if you don't like the private construction queue, it is something you should learn to deal with.

The Stone men of the north, those I blame. Once I had called their chieftain brother and with my brother we carved our resolve to oppose the tyrant into the very mountain they call home. I thought the stone men warriors like we, made hard by the hard lands they live in, but I was mistaken. Their hardness was only skin deep and that skin cracked easily when the tyrant offered them an easier way to live. They let sloth take hold of them and it exposed just how weak and soft they were beneath their stone skin. To stand became too taxing for the lazy stone men of the north and they found life easier on their knees.
The wind singers of the west I never had high hopes for, their allegiance changes with the wind, but I hoped they would see how the Tyrants would clip their wings. But before the fickle folk of the west was able to see the truth in our words the Tyrant had already set his plan in motion. He used his magic to tear the very land apart and cast it into the sky. He placed his army of machines onto those islands of the sky and from there they rain death upon any Wind singer who would try to take off towards freedom. So the song of wind singers have gone quiet, their song no longer soars through the air, instead their cries echo between the cliffs.
In the east the royal family of the great lake claimed they possessed both wisdom and humility, but I found only cowardice and arrogance in their throne room. Their king had sat the throne from over a hundred years and he swore to act should the tyrant prove a threat to his people. We sent word to him that the time had come to act and his response was as far from wisdom as any man can get. “No army of metal and magic can approach my gates, so I see no threat from the tyrant.“
The arrogance, the hubris, the pure simple stupidity...
As he promised no army breached his gates, his hall was never ransacked and his people never had to raise their weapons for war. But the Tyrant did not need to storm his gates, his islands between the clouds moved far beyond where and from there he worked his magic. Not a drop of water fell on that great lake during the rainy season and when the tyrants stepped into the throne room the king of a mere puddle lowered his knees to a floor as dry as our own desert.
So I stand before you today and I tell you this: We stand alone against the tyrant.
We stand alone against his machines, his magic and against the very allies we tried to raise against him.
I tell you this because you need to know where we stand: we stand in the sand our mothers raised us in, we stand in the sand our mothers trained us in, we stand in OUR sand.
I tell you this because you need to know how we stand: we stand without his machines in our midst, we stand with bodies hardened to the core, we stand firm with the will to act quickly and decisively, and we stand without the delusions of those who have lived safe lives behind their walls.

Upcoming senior ECE here, at my second internship right now and I’m realizing I don’t want to do any of this for a living. I love electrodynamics, controls, power systems, but I cannot stand computer work.
I’m specializing in controls so I got an internship in automation, and 95% of what I do is programming. I can’t stand it, everyone just looks at me like I’m dumb because I don’t understand what an IP address is. Last summer I was at an automation company too, but I did almost nothing related to my major (which is fine), and when I did- I was shadowing the electrician and electrical technician.

I’m specializing in controls so I got an internship in automation, and 95% of what I do is programming. I can’t stand it, everyone just looks at me like I’m dumb because I don’t understand what an IP address is. Last summer I was at an automation company too, but I did almost nothing related to my major (which is fine), and when I did- I was shadowing the electrician and electrical technician.

The pilot was a Cornacchiaris, one of the species that my nation came into contact with.Then immediately went to war with.And what do you know? Nobody won. Actually, the only ‘winners’, technically, were the Free Systems.
The bastards managed to get their own little slice of paradise…that’s why I’m here.
I held my two vestigial arms together, while I held onto a support with my left arm. The ride was rather bumpy, due to the constant cloud-cover and storms that gave this planet its name. Apparently it meant ‘Veiled’ in a dead human language. Oh Well.
I had escaped the habitat I was hatched on to find myself a new life. The Free Systems was just that. Earth and Alari were both no-gos, even though they were all about freedom and equality, the underlying hatred for my species was ever-present. Idraxi was part of the Free Systems, but there was still some Sahlari presence on that planet. Velatum was the only choice for me, it was both populated enough to where it wouldn’t feel lonely, and empty enough to where I didn’t have to breathe someone else’s air every second.
The only downside was the damn clouds. I would be getting barely any sun, and my pale-green tail was going to need it.
The shuttle touched down, and the rear ramp opened, letting us leave the tin-can that is a standard Free Systems shuttle. My objective? A scrapyard owned by one James Walken, apparently the nephew of one of the humans first contact crew.
It was less of a scrapyard and more of a tinkering workshop, as he put it. Frankly, I couldn’t care less. I just need a proper job on this damn planet. ‘Least it isn’t mining.
After an hour of treacherous roads and privately owned infrastructure, I could finally see the sign: ‘Walken Workshop’, with the word workshop being written over what I believe said ‘scrapyard’.
I knocked on the side of the open door.
“Ah hello! Welcome to my workshop. I’ve got some UNO-Standard mags and sidearms on discount right no-”
“I’m here for the job.” I wanted to cut off his sales speech before it even started, but his speaking speed was impressive.
“Oh! You must be… Tajara?”
“Yes, that’s me.” The human was more excited than me, for some reason.
I guess he didn’t have many people working with him?
“Thank you for actually coming in, seriously. I was left on read by other people after they realized they wouldn’t work under UNO jurisdiction.”
“Happens often?”
“Yeah, it does. It’s not that bad here, you definitely have more freedom than in Orion, but I guess the pirates scare everyone away.”

“About pirates, what’s their activity around here?”
“Surprisingly little, they only go against UNO and Sahlari vessels, apparently the locals made a sort of privateer pact with them.”

“The opposite, in fact. I get some pirate crews who want repairs or modifications to their weaponry and systems. Definitely not the cleanest business, but money’s money around here.”

He had appeared right behind me, somehow remaining perfectly silent and covering his metallic and oily sce- Metal and oil, that’s the entire atmosphere in this damn place! That’s why I couldn’t smell him!
“Do not scare me like that! What is a mop, and how do I use it?” I quickly shoved the mop into his hands and put my fists on my waist.
“You don’t have mops…?
“Apparently we don’t. What do you use them for?”
“Cleaning the floor?”
“You don’t get cleaning robots to do it for you?”
“Do I look like a guy who owns an army of roombas?”
Huh?
“What the fuck is a roomba?”
“Forget it, why do you not have any mops?”
“I was born on a habitat-station, human. We didn’t have the luxury of letting water evaporate freely.”

This fucker. I turned, quick as lighting, and nearly smashed into this jackass.
“Listen here, James. Let me make it very clear. No, I didn’t sign a contract, and no, you wouldn’t be able to even get near me without me smashing your head in.” Was that too far? Fuck it, might as well go through with it.
“You waltz in, act like you want a job, then start shit with me-”

James fell silent. Then he started smirking.
“You’re hired.”

Modern devices such as tvs, computers, led bulbs, and many other household things dont require such a high voltage anymore. Could we not wire the house with much thinner guage wire and supply much less power to portions of the home? Obviously things like stoves, fridges, and microwaves still need a lot more power to run. Would this not 1. Reduce the cost of construction by utilizing cheaper compononets 2. Save energy by not having to convert the power from such a high voltage at each device's power supply 3. Make it easier to at least run a portion of the home off of solar energy with a much smaller and reasonbly priced system. Electrons are not my strong suit so i may be way off base but it just seems like it wouldnt be that difficult to change.
