2023.06.06 14:54 Substantial-Egg-5269 Ready to start Ferber soon. Send me your best tips for this FTM

Hello there! Since bringing our LO home from the hospital I've been counting down the days until he's old enough to sleep train.
This kid surprises us every night even though his naps and feeding schedule are typically the same day to day. He'll either a) sleep through the night! b) wake up once to feed or c) be up every few hours. We recently moved up his bedtime so he's asleep around 7:30p and up between 6-7a.
He's 16 weeks and will be turning 4 months next week. He's consistently moving up in percentiles for weight and sleeps through the night every few nights, so I don't think he needs a night feed. He's pretty good about falling asleep on his own but I still sometimes nurse to sleep because it's so damn easy.
I ordered Ferber's book to read more about the science but understand the general principles thanks to this subreddit. What else should I know before venturing into Ferber? Tips on how to split up sleep training duties with your partner? Strategies for dealing with the crying? He's also in a Merlin suit and I *think* going through some sleep regression stuff -- should we train him while transitioning into a sleep sack and as he's getting used to new sleep cycles?
Send me alllll your tips and encouragement please!

2023.06.06 14:53 LetsTalkWithRobots Let's Talk about ROS Navigation Stack: This is what makes the Robots move

Let's Talk about ROS Navigation Stack: This is what makes the Robots move
Hey, fellow robotics enthusiasts!
I get asked about Nav Stack a lot so I thought I should discuss the Navigation Stack, often referred to as 'nav stack,' which provides everything necessary for a robot to move from point A to point B. It's an all-in-one solution that has become indispensable in our field.
Before we jump in, there are several key ROS concepts that you should be comfortable with:
  1. ROS Topics: Imagine you have a group of friends who exchange information about different subjects (e.g., weather, sports, news). In ROS, a topic is a bit like that. It's a stream of data where nodes can publish information or subscribe to listen in. It's the backbone of how different parts of your robot communicate.
  2. URDF: Picture this: You're tasked to describe your robot to a friend over a phone call. You'd talk about its shape, size, and the number of wheels, or arms it has, right? URDF or Unified Robot Description Format is the language we use to describe the robot's physical layout and capabilities to ROS.
  3. Motor Control: Controlling a robot's movement involves commanding its motors. For instance, if we take an example of a delivery robot, sending specific commands via ROS to the robot's wheels will help it move from one location to another.
  4. ROS Perception: Let's think of our robot as a human for a second. Just like we use our senses to understand our surroundings, a robot uses its sensors. It could be a camera, lidar, or ultrasonic sensor. ROS Perception handles this data processing, helping the robot identify objects, map its environment, or avoid obstacles.
Understanding these areas is vital for using the ROS Nav Stack, which gives our robots the incredible ability to move from point A to point B autonomously while avoiding obstacles. Let's look into key components of the Navigation Stack with a real-world example
Imagine a warehouse where an autonomous robot is used to move boxes from one spot to another. The robot's task seems simple: pick up a box from location A, and transport it to location B. But, considering the dynamic environment of a warehouse - changing obstacles, moving people or machines - it's a complex problem. This is where the ROS Navigation Stack becomes indispensable.
Here are the key components of the Navigation Stack in action:
  1. Global and Local Planners: These are the brains behind the operation. The Global Planner charts the overall route from A to B, considering static obstacles like walls. The Local Planner makes real-time adjustments to avoid dynamic obstacles like moving forklifts or people.
  2. Costmap 2D: This component generates a detailed 2D map of the environment. It provides a real-time view of obstacles to the Planners, differentiating between static and dynamic obstructions.
  3. Localization: The robot needs to know where it is at any moment. AMCL (Adaptive Monte Carlo Localization), for example, uses the robot's sensors and a known map to estimate the robot's position and orientation.
  4. Move Base: This node brings everything together. It takes the path provided by the Planners and generates commands to drive the robot, smoothly following the path while reacting to the dynamic world.
In our warehouse, these components work together seamlessly. They enable the robot to navigate efficiently, avoid obstacles and people, and successfully transport boxes from A to B, optimizing warehouse operations.
That's the power of the ROS Navigation Stack - turning a complex task into a manageable one, making our robots smarter and our lives as robotics engineers easier.
I'd love to hear about your experiences using the ROS Navigation Stack. Do you have a favourite feature or a challenge you've overcome using it? Let's learn from each other's experiences!
Hopefully, once for all this post gives you a better understanding of these essential concepts. Happy building! 🤖

2023.06.06 14:53 OkRice1421 Yep, that's exactly what it is

You have confused modesty for humility. You arrogant fucking failures don't even know what words mean. How can you expect to teach me anything about humility, when you can't even use that word correctly?
I don't think you people can actually say you've ever been humble in your tenure. Modest for sure, but never humble. The world wouldn't look like this if you had ever been humble.

2023.06.06 14:52 markinituphuck He said, “I don’t deserve that. I’m not disabled. That’s for my friends who lost limbs or died.”

Let’s call him Bill. Late yesterday afternoon I went to a bar to have a draft beer and a fellow vet sat down beside me. We soon realized we had both joined in 1987, he the USN, I the USAF. He retired in 2002. I separated in 1995, so I did not retire as he. He shared how he served through 911 and how some of his friends were severely injured, maimed, or killed. I asked him, “Brother, are you in the VA system? Have you filed a claim for your benefits?” He said, “I don’t deserve that. I’m not disabled. That’s for my friends who lost limbs or died.” My eyes got wet and I just shook my head, put my arm on his shoulder, and told him, “You served, brother. You have benefits in return for any way you got messed up during your service and I’m not trying to make you feel bad, but you can’t tell me watching your friends die and you fighting the enemy, while being shot at didn’t affect you in the head.” He affirmed that it did indeed affect him profoundly. I offered my help. I tried to encourage him. I led him to the fountain. It’s now his choice to drink from it. Let’s continue to encourage one another. Blessings!

2023.06.06 14:52 fireshaper r/lockpicking will be joining in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do as a user?

Thank you for your patience in the matter,
-lockpicking Mod Team

2023.06.06 14:52 Staticfair Offering free custom book covers!

Hey writers! I’m currently trying to shift careers a bit (I love writing, but it’s not paying my bills at the moment) and am trying to build up my art portfolio. However, I much prefer working on actual projects rather than premades and mockups. Because of this, I’d love to offer a handful of free custom book covers to the community here!
My style is very reminiscent of vintage book covers, usually with minimal color palettes and foiled elements. I hand draw everything on my iPad. I love working on designs with unique symbolism or beautiful flowing designs. It might not work for every genre, but hey, it’s free and fun!
I’ll take on as many custom covers as I can! Leave a comment if your interested and I’ll DM you for info (what text you’d want, symbolism, general color palette, etc)

2023.06.06 14:51 taeng89 How does buying luxury watches work in sg?

If I registered my interest for a watch with an SA at The Hour Glass, does that mean that I don't have to bother talking to other SAs at other THG outlets?
Since THG and Watches of Switzerland are also linked, does this also mean that I don't have to speak to the SAs there?
Lastly, would it be right to say since SAs are akin to Relationship Managers, the SA you choose to register your interest with is very important since the chances of me getting a watch is dependent on how well-connected the SA is? Also since my "watch portfolio" will be held with this particular SA as well.
Pretty new to watch buying so I'm quite confused in this aspect. Thank you :)

2023.06.06 14:51 No-Hovercraft6664 Any advice is grateful appreciated

Hello , ima 23 year old who’s in desperate need of passive income . Wrecked my 2023 leased car , drug court , child , yanno average financial issues . I’m extremely intelligent but not super tech savvy compared to yall but I can commit fraud or purchase drugs off the DNMs so I understand how to learn anything on a computer . Long story short im sick of commercial painting and serving . I want to make passive income through drop shipping but I’m discouraged to even attempt it considering how hard and time consuming it must be to get your foot in the door and start making cash. So my question is if I were to get my laptop back from my cousin and dedicate dozens of hours every month researching , observing and experimenting in this area of sales , would I get results that match my salary within half a year ? Or is this a congested area of income , undesirable for fresh meat like myself
long story short : wanna start learning . Is it worth the time or should I pursue passive income elsewhere ?

Just diagnosed and was wondering if any of you drink metamucil (psyllium husk) before meals to help stabilize sugars? I was drinking it once a day before to help with constipation but now drink before each meal. What has your experience been like? Also wondering how you drink it, do you drink it before your meal and start the timer when you drink it or when you have your first bite? Or do you drink it while eating? How many teaspoons do you drink? Many thanks!

2023.06.06 14:51 wiseguy887 Speed Dating in Dublin

27 male, just joined a speed dating event in Dublin for next week.
I have never done this before - I mostly use dating apps but I was curious to explore other options as well.
People who have attended such events- how was your experience and how’s the quality of dating pool, the event says it contains people from age 20-40 but I seriously doubt that, I assume women below 30 don’t have any incentive to go to these events because dating apps alone would give them a ton of matches.
Honestly I have paid 18 euros for the ticket and don’t expect much out of it other than the complimentary drink which they are giving out with the ticket.

2023.06.06 14:51 fatiguesshy Can I get some insight about this situation?

Alright I’ll try to be clear about this so sorry about the long essay :/ Things you need to know first: my parents aren’t normal; my mom is BPD probably and my dad is a narcissist. To be honest Im not completely sure but I know they aren’t stable like ever. My eldest sister, sis1, is a psychiatrist yet very emotionally abusive (pits siblings against each other, always our parent’s golden child, manipulative, attention seeking, and likes to be in control of our lives). A few days ago a huge fight broke out between my dad and us (sis2, sis3, and I + my bro tried to help and take a neutral position) regarding financial matters, unfairness, unequal treatment…etc. I’ve always been aware of this issue and used to believe that if I can’t have my emotional needs met then I should at least have my financial needs met. So I’ve already brought up this issue on my own several times, but I would get scared after getting shouted at and shut down. My approach that day (during the fight) was less explosive than my siblings because I already knew what was going to happen and felt really sad since I especially don’t know how to deal with my father. My other siblings have their ways when asking for money or help or anything really. I can’t seem to unless I completely mask and manipulate which I’m not very good at doing almost times unless it’s necessary. Anyways on the day after my father acted like nothing happened and was being “normal” (his usual self). He called over sis2 and she told sis3 to come with. She went to him and he was interrogating her about her grades as usual (we are all in college) and once he saw sis3 he also asked her. He doesn’t really ask it’s more like “I keep on seeing the three of you constantly spend w time with each other, and this isn’t healthy for your academic life. I wonder about your future and don’t see you studying. Life isn’t as wonderful as you think where you will live with unlimited internet access… We have had more experience…” He usually calls sis2 because she draws negative attention to herself (of course unintentionally and because sis1 doesn’t like her and paints her in a negative light, like she is the devil and she preys on sis3 and I but that’s another topic to get into because she always does this with anyone including my cousin who she despises and believes strayed us from the right path into her control, bullshit) the way she does that is because of her fallen grades and lack of executive function (she has ADHD) (my parents believe this is HORRIFIC cuz she is in med school) (all of us are except sis 3 and I are premed and we get almost the same grades as always so they think we are “good, independent kids” sometimes). Anyways I joined them and saw my dad just starting to eat this ice cream cake that has been left in the freezer and uncovered for a long while next to meats and spices since February. He asked if anyone wants some too, I said “No” in a shocked way and said “this has been in the freezer for so long! I’m sure it’s something close to rotten!” in a disgusted manner to be honest. He got defensive and said that ice cream doesn’t rot. Sis2 then came to the room after and was mad at me because I was inconsiderate and shouldn’t have behaved like that with him. That I could have enraged him and made him press on about her grades. I didn’t understand at all like how in the world was it related. I got really annoyed because it feels like I’m always on a leash whether it’s sis1, sis2, or my mom. It’s like any action is wrong. It made no sense to me like it was so trivial because I truly believe that isn’t the issue. There are a million other things making him already press on about grades and interrogate like how she has been sleeping in sis3’s room for the past week, how she is completely ambiguous about her grades (from the second term and we are currently in the third as well as last midterms), how she is tardy about exam times…etc. I also hate to say it but she is demanding and needy about certain reactions like if I don’t give her something specific she doesn’t recognize it and mocks me for it. She already has self deprecating humor sort of and strongly leans towards perfectionism regarding her looks. It’s hard being around her when she speaks about it all the time saying shit like we are so bald and ugly, we have a parallelogram facial structure, our genetics are fucked…etc. it’s so unhinged hearing it from her everyday and she completely denies any positive qualities it’s so damn weird yet she is needy and needs validation about her opinions, her looks, her letters, texts, hygiene. It’s so hard to make her see problems from my view and every time I try it is hard for me to articulate. She is also very analytical and hyper fixates on a lot of things. I’d not think she catches up on any emotional subtleties even though I always try to. It just feels so unequal. I felt shocked hearing her say I was being inconsiderate. Was I really in the situation?

2023.06.06 14:51 Nazmul_1971 How to craft an irresistible offer for software development agencies?

Hi, I'm trying to craft an irresistible offer for my software development agency.
For example, a lead generation agency can say, "I'll book you 10 meetings in 4 weeks or your money back!"
An SEO agency can say, "I'll rank you on the 1st page of Google or your money back!"
I mainly offer MVP development and I'm thinking of this, "I'll launch you within 8 weeks or your money back.". I'm not sure how good this is. So, could you please share some of your ideas?

2023.06.06 14:51 graphicClassic157 Sleep quality and patterns while fasting.

So, I dove headfirst into this fasting journey a few months ago. My doc suggested it as a way to control my sugar levels, but also, I was really intrigued by the mental clarity aspect a lot of people rave about. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, with better and worse days and weeks, but I'm getting the hang of it (as in, keeping myself as healthy, functional, and content as possible). Let's talk about sleep for a sec, though.

Sleep, as I've come to understand, is one of the top priorities for improving metabolism, which is essentially how your body uses energy. A good night's rest can give your metabolism a boost, and interestingly, I've been noticing that my fasting routine has changed the times/patterns/quality of my sleep already.

Here's what I've experienced so far:
-Better quality sleep - it's been deeper since I started fasting. It's akin to going from a cramped economy flight to a spacious business class - just feels more restful.
-Sleep onset - while initially a bit tough getting to sleep on an empty stomach, it's something I've gradually adjusted to, and it doesn't bother me now.
-Increased alertness upon waking - this has been a welcome perk! My mornings now kick off with more energy and focus.

In addition to my experiences, I've been doing some reading and found that there's some discussion about needing less sleep while still having ample energy throughout the day. Also, increased REM sleep also seems to be a possible side effect. REM sleep is the dreaming part of our sleep cycle, and it's crucial for memory and learning.

I'll also leave this article on metabolic boost here, as it talks in more detail about how good quality sleep and regular workouts (two of three pillars of healthy fasting) can contribute to a better metabolism. They're all basically part of the bigger picture.

So, have any of you noticed shifts in your sleep patterns with fasting? And any tips on how to juggle fasting, workouts, and sleep to feel healthy and functional not only in the near future but also NOW? Thanks for any input, guys!

2023.06.06 14:50 eliyah23rd A thought inspired by Tuesday’s Daf (page) in the Talmud, Gittin 21

A thought inspired by Tuesday’s Daf (page) in the Talmud, Gittin 21
The long tendrils of our beliefs.
This post presents a philosophical idea inspired by the text of today’s Daf. The Daf is one page in the Talmud that tens of thousands of people study each day. I explain the connection to the text in a comment below. My purpose is to show that there are underlying philosophical assumptions in the Talmud that can have great significance for anybody today trying to understand our complex reality.
O, what a tangled web we weave - Marmion
Many of our beliefs are connected. W. V. O. Quine, the 20th c. philosopher thought of our beliefs as a web, but in some cases, the long tendrils of a root system might be a better metaphor.
Our beliefs are connected because we know that one belief can undermine another, and therefore, we seek to maintain some semblance of consistency in our beliefs. We allow new beliefs to enter only when they do not challenge the older residents of our mind. Beliefs that have the power to force their way in, which we call “facts”, often cause us to update related beliefs. Once updated, those new versions might have knock-on effects on their surrounding beliefs too.
Our beliefs form tendrils of relations that are long and tightly tangled with each other.
We cannot always update our beliefs. When we discover that a "fact" that previously fit comfortably into its surroundings turns out to be incorrect, we may uproot it, but we leave many others unchanged. It is as if we are attempting to remove a weed from our garden; we may succeed in removing some of its roots, but in the extraction process, much of the root system remains too long and tangled and therefore stays in the soil, causing problems in the future. While the "fact" was in place, it caused updates to other beliefs, but now that it needs to be removed, we forget to undo the updates to the related beliefs.
For example, suppose you hear that someone you thought was good did something bad, or vice versa. You might reject the report or interpret the reported action to fit your preexisting beliefs. However, if the report is undeniable or the reinterpretation is implausible, you might have to adjust your beliefs about that person.
With the newly modified beliefs about this other person, all subsequent reports will be viewed from this new perspective. For example, suppose that after some time, the initial report that caused you to revise your opinion about them turns out to be false - that individual never did what you were informed they did. Now, you eliminate the false information from your knowledge. Nevertheless, it is highly probable that you will not reverse many of the adaptations you made between the time when you first received the report and when you discovered it was untrue.
Complex systems are composed of simple components. A complete knowledge database might contain a vast collection of short phrases, which combine to form the system. Likewise, the human brain may hold a sophisticated belief system that depends on many simple memories and attitudes, which are in turn linked to even simpler instinctive reward systems based on hormones and expressed through sub-verbal cues like "this good," "that bad," or "feeling pleasant." The division between rational and instinctive may not be as distinct as we typically believe; the rational computational system is itself constructed of primal and instinctive components.
This web of beliefs includes not only cold facts or abstract theories, but also short-term and long-term plans that have a tendril-like complexity and interconnectedness. Even when one part of the plan fails, other parts may still remain. Instincts that motivate us may be remnants of strategies that were once highly effective but have now taken on a life of their own.
The tangled complexity of our minds also affect our relationships with other people. We might have certain attitudes, expectations, or plans towards people we are close to that might lose their relevance over time. If the relationship or partnership changes, old attitudes or expectations might persist even if they no longer serve their original purpose.
We are always planting new plants in the garden. If some need to be removed, we should consider how careful we need to be to allow all the interconnected roots to come free as well.
