No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Truck Hannah
2023.06.05 14:28 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Truck Hannah
The entirety of
Harry "Truck" Hannah's major league career came with the New York Yankees -- all three years of it. But if you include his participation in the minors, he had a long career, beginning in 1909 with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League and ending in 1940 with the Memphis Chickasaws in the Southern Association. He is one of only a handful of players to have a hit in five different decades!
Of all the forgotten Yankee with memorable nicknames --
No Neck,
Stanky the Yankee,
Sailor Bob,
Spud,
Slow Joe,
The Mummy,
Birdie,
Bump, and
Grandma Johnny -- there's something to be said about the sublime elegance of a big, brawny catcher nicknamed Truck.
James Harrison Hannah Jr. was born 134 years ago today, on June 5, 1889, in what was then the Dakota Territory. (It would become the state of North Dakota about five months later.) By age 2, the family had moved to Seattle, Washington.
As a kid, he was called Harry, but by the time he was playing baseball, he was universally known as Truck. There are several stories as to how he got the nickname. Some said it had to do with his imposing size -- he stood 6'1" and weighed a solid 190 pounds -- and others because of the way he could block the plate as easily as a truck could block a street. Other sources say the nickname wasn't comparing him to a motor vehicle but to a horse, or rather a truck horse, as horses that pulled heavy wagons were called at the time. His daughter, Helen, said he got the nickname simply because he was "big and slow."
Another explanation, a little less colorful, was that Hannah paid the bills in the off-season by working as a truck driver!
Hall of Fame Umpire Billy Evans said Hannah was adept at the catcher's trick of distracting the batter with a steady stream of banter while behind the plate:
"Truck Hannah always has been an object of interest to me when catching. Aside from always doing a pretty good job receiving, he never failed to have a line of conversation that would make a bigger hit on the vaudeville circuit than some of the stuff used by some monologue artists. Hannah keeps up a continual chatter from the time the game starts. Of course, his conversation is largely directed at the batter, in the hope that his line of talk will take the mind of the batter from his work, the making of base hits. He seeks to keep the batter from concentrating, and from the many strikes slipped over by the New York pitchers, I would say there was merit in his system. Hannah's conversation is never objectionable. He usually has the batter laughing at some of his talk, rather than sore."
But Hannah used more than just banter to distract batters. As the pitch was being delivered, he would sometimes spit tobacco juice onto a player's shoes, toss pebbles onto the plate, or throw dirt at their hands on the bat!
Hannah got his start in professional baseball as a 20-year-old third baseman with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League. When the team needed an emergency catcher, Hannah was put behind the plate and stuck there for the rest of his career. Over the next five years he played for five different teams in four different leagues, until in 1914 finally catching on with the Sacramento Wolves in the Pacific Coast League. The PCL at the time was considered by some to be a third major league, or at least the minor league closest to major league competition, and Hannah was regarded as one of the best catchers in the league. He drew interest from several major league teams, including the Tigers, Phillies, and Browns. But it was the Yankees who finally acquired him, paying $4,000 to acquire his rights after he hit .292 in 569 at-bats in 1917.
Truck pulled into the Polo Grounds -- not Yankee Stadium, which wouldn't be built until 1923 -- as the foundation was being laid for a dynasty. Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast Huston purchased the Yankees in 1915 and immediately set about reversing the fortunes of what had been for years one of the worst-run teams in the American League. The Yankees, as they became known in 1913, had only winning season in the last 10 years.
The new owners set about making changes, acquiring a number of valuable players: Wally Pipp, Home Run Baker, Ping Bodie, Aaron Ward, Urban Shocker, and previously forgotten Yankee
Bob Shawkey.
After the 1917 season they made the biggest change of all, firing well-liked manager Bill Donovan and replacing him with former St. Louis Cardinals manager Miller Huggins, who over the next 11 years would lead the Yankees to six pennants and three World Series.
Huggins made another move, acquiring from the St. Louis Browns future Hall of Fame pitcher "Gettysburg Eddie" Plank and veteran second baseman Del Pratt. The latter would be a good player for the Yankees, hitting .295/.348/.394 (106 OPS+) over the next three seasons, but the 42-year-old Plank refused to report and retired instead. In return, the Yankees shipped out five players... including starting catcher Les Nunamaker, who had been with the Yankees for four seasons.
And so, needing a catcher to replace Nunamaker, the Yankees paid the Salt Lake City Bees $4,000 for Hannah. He was expected to battle 22-year-old Muddy Ruel to be the backup to the 25-year-old Roxy Walters, who had been Nunamaker's understudy since September 1915, but Ruel would be drafted into the U.S. Army and Walters broke his finger in an exhibition game 10 days before Opening Day. By the time Walters was ready to play again, Hannah was hitting .288/.432/.356 and had thrown out 19 out of 34 basestealers; over the rest of the season, he would maintain that pace to lead the league in CS% (55%) as well as in double plays as a catcher (16). His batting average would fade dramatically, however, dropping all the way to .220 by the end of the season, but he was still contributing with a .361 OBP in 312 plate appearances. Walters's bat never got started at all, and hitting just .199/.239/.236 in 205 plate appearances.
Technically a major league rookie when he joined the team, the 29-year-old Hannah was treated like a veteran from his four seasons in the well-respected Pacific Coast League. In addition, he was -- literally as well as figuratively, at 6'1" -- one of the few players on the team who could see eye-to-eye with the 6'2" Babe Ruth when he was acquired prior to the 1920 season. When Ruth got into squabbles with diminutive manager Miller Huggins, it was often Hannah's duty to keep the peace.
Yankee shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh, the Yankee captain from 1914 to 1921, described one such incident to long-time Yankee PR man Marty Appel in 1974:
"Once we were leaving Boston after a tough loss, and Babe was drunk, and he said he was gonna throw Huggins off the train! He was heading for his drawing room. On the way he stopped in the men’s room and punched this huge mirror. It fell into a million pieces. Me and Ernie Shore and Truck Hannah pulled him down to the ground and sat on him until he passed out. Truck — a big guy — puts him over his shoulder and moves him to the next car."
At the end of the season, the Yankees were happy enough with Hannah that they traded Roxy Walters to the Red Sox. For the next two years, the catching duties were almost evenly split between Hannah and Ruel, who was back from the Army with the end of World War I.
The "Muddy-Truck" tandem was colorfully named but disappointing, with Ruel hitting .255/.325/.306 (71 OPS+) in 560 PA and Hannah .243/.313/.317 (70 OPS+) in 553 PA. Catcher in those days was very much a defense-first position, and both had good gloves, but the Yankees (even with the newly acquired Babe Ruth having an 11.7 bWAR season) finished three games out of 1st in 1920.
Ruppert and Huston asked Huggins what the team needed to win, and his answer: a catcher.
At the end of the season, the Yankees sent Hannah back to the Pacific Coast League, and traded Ruel to the Red Sox for previously forgotten Yankee
Wally Schang, the first in the long line of great Yankee catchers. In his five years with the Yankees, the switch-hitting Schang hit .297/.390/.406 (105 OPS+), and in the 1923 World Series -- the first of 27 won by the Yankees -- Schang played every inning of every game, went 7-for-22 (.318) with a double and three runs scored, and allowed just one stolen base.
Hannah would stay in the Pacific Coast League for the next 22 years as a player, coach, and manager. He had a great year with the Vernon Tigers in 1923, hitting .346 with 23 doubles and 6 home runs in 370 plate appearances. His final plate appearance came on May 19, 1940, when he was managing the Memphis Chicks. Two weeks shy of his 51st birthday, with both his catchers injured, Hannah caught both ends of a doubleheader and went 1-for-6.
Hannah retired from baseball two years later after his St. Paul Saints lost 15 games in a row -- 11 of them by one run! He said he couldn't sleep anymore, replaying every loss in his head over and over, second-guessing every decision he made as manager.
He retired to his ranch in Southern California, but remained active enough in the regional baseball scene that when the Los Angeles Angels played their first major league game in 1961, Hannah was selected to catch the ceremonial first pitch.
Truck Hannah died on April 27, 1982, five weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. His wife, Helen, died in October, a month before what would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.
Keep On Truckin':
- One of the more interesting aspects in researching information about Truck Hannah is in looking for pictures of him, you come across many photos of trucks owned by women named Hannah.
- Hannah made his major league debut against the great Walter Johnson. In his first major league plate appearance, he singled up the middle! He popped out his second time up, then struck out. His fourth time up he drew a walk against Johnson, advanced to second on a single, and scored his first major league run on a double, and the Yankees won, 6-3. Not a bad debut against the future Hall of Famer!
- According to his SABR biography: "Hannah’s daughter may have led a more interesting life than her ballplaying father. Helen Lorraine (Hannah) Campbell was one of the first women in Los Angeles to enlist in the Marine Corps during World War II, and retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1975 after 32 years of service. She was also a chaperone for several years with the Muskegon and Kalamazoo teams in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, the league that inspired the 1992 movie A League of Their Own. At the age of 75 she went parasailing for the first time and at 78 sailed over Africa’s Serengeti plains in a hot-air balloon. She died in 2013 at the age of 97."
- On May 12, 1920, Hannah went 4-for-4 (all singles) with two runs and two RBIs in a 14-8 rout of the Chicago White Sox. Hannah singled twice in a seven-run 6th inning, as did pitcher Bob Shawkey; it was the first time in major league history that a pitcher and catcher each had two hits in the same inning.
- That was Hannah's best day as a major leaguer, but he had another four-hit day on September 11, 1920, with a double and three singles in five at-bats against the Cleveland Indians.
- Truck Hannah was the first major leaguer born in what would become North Dakota when he made his debut on April 15, 1918. He also is one of three Yankees born in North Dakota: Ken Hunt, an outfielder in the Yankee farm system from 1952 to 1960 who had a couple cups of coffee in the Bronx, and later played for the Angels and Senators; and long-time Cleveland Indians 1B/DH Travis Hafner, who ended his career with the Yankees in 2013. The most famous Yankee raised in North Dakota is Roger Maris, but he was actually born in Minnesota. The family moved to Fargo when Maris was 8 years old. A total of 20 major leaguers were born in North Dakota, and the best, by bWAR, was Angels outfielder and two-time All-Star Darin Erstad.
- Hannah is on the All-Palindromic Last Name Team, along with Dean Anna, Toby Harrah, Eddie Kazak, Dave Otto, Glenn Otto, Dick Nen, Robb Nen, Johnny Reder, Juan Salas, and Mark Salas.
- In 1917, Hannah was behind the plate for the Salt Lake City Bees in the Pacific Coast League when former New York Giants outfielder Fred Snodgrass came up to the plate for the Vernon Tigers. Hannah, by this time a 28-year-old nine-year minor league veteran and hitting a respectable .292, wasn't impressed. "So you're a big leaguer? I guess you're going to come out here and show us how the Giants used to do it, eh? Let's see if you can hit this one." That off-season, major league teams asked Snodgrass for his opinion on the top players in the Pacific Coast League, and his report on Hannah: "I don’t like him personally, but I must say he is the best all around catcher in this league, and my dislike for him does not blind me to that fact."
- George Halas -- who would later be the founder of the Chicago Bears -- was a 24-year-old rookie on the New York Yankees in 1919. He was on the bench sitting next to Truck Hannah during a game against the Tigers, staring wide-eyed as his boyhood idol, the legendary Ty Cobb, strode to the plate. Hannah, maybe pranking the rookie, told Halas he ought to razz Cobb to try to throw him off his game. Halas did as he was told, and to his surprise, got a reaction: Cobb dropped his bat, marched over to the Yankee dugout, and pointed at Halas. "Punk! I'll see you after the game! Don't forget, punk!" Halas, a Navy veteran and a college football player, was no punk but not exactly looking forward to a brawl against the famously irascible Cobb. He stayed in the locker room as long as possible, hoping Cobb would be gone by the time he emerged, but when he finally came out, the Georgia Peach was waiting for him. "I like your spirit, kid," Cobb said, "but don't overdo it when you don't have to." Halas said it was a lesson he never forgot.
- Speaking of Cobb, he told a sportswriter he didn't care for Hannah's distracting patter behind the plate: “This fellow Hannah of the New York club keeps me busier at the plate than any other catcher in the league. I don’t like letting a recruit outtalk me, and in my effort to keep my end of the conversation, I had my work cut out for me making base hits off those Yankee pitchers.”
- Carl Mays, who had pitched for the Red Sox since 1915, was acquired by the Yankees on July 30, 1919. Delighted to go from the 38-48 Red Sox to the 48-38 Yankees, Mays made the rounds in the clubhouse, shaking hands. When he got to Hannah, he offered his hand, but Hannah shoved him away, then charged after him. Mays backed up until Hannah vaulted over a table and cornered him against a wall -- and only then did Hannah shake his hand. "We're even," Hannah said, grinning. Since the previous season, Hannah and Mays had been feuding. Mays took great pride in keeping his uniform spotless, and hated Hannah's trick of spitting tobacco juice onto his shoes while batting. So every time Hannah came up to the plate, Mays came "up and in" to make him hit the dirt. In April, the last time they'd face each other, Mays plunked him. But now they were teammates and all was forgiven. Ironically, a year later, Mays would kill Cleveland Indians shortstop Ray Chapman with a pitch that hit him in the head.
- During the off seasons, Hannah played in the California Winter League, believed to be the only integrated league in professional baseball at the time. Hannah also played against Negro Leaguers when barnstorming with Babe Ruth in 1920 and Dizzy Dean in 1935.
- Prior to the 1927 season, Babe Ruth made a silent movie called Babe Comes Home. Based on a short story called "Said With Soap," it had quite the plot: Ruth is Babe Dugan, a ballplayer whose tobacco-chewing habit means his uniform is always stained. He falls in love with Vernie, the laundress who cleans the team uniforms, but she wants him to stop chewing tobacco. Babe then goes into a slump, and finds himself on the bench. Vernie finally relents and gives him a plug of tobacco, and Babe hits a game-winning home run. The movie was filmed at Wrigley Field -- not that one, but a field with the same name in Los Angeles. It was the home stadium for the Los Angeles Angels, and on the Angels were several ex-Yankees, including Truck Hannah. Ruth was much more interested in his old pals than in the movie, and the exasperated director struggled to keep Ruth's attention. Finally, he moved Ruth to a distant park of the stadium, as far away as he could from Hannah and the other ex-Yankees. But Hannah and the others kept mischievously hitting balls in his direction, causing Ruth to botch take after take!
- Hannah was in two movies himself, both times as a baseball playing extra. The films are notable because they are both early "talkies". His first appearance was in 1928's Warming Up, about a pitcher (played by Richard Dix, later a star in westerns) who falls in love with the team owner's daughter (played by Jean Arthur, who would later co-star with Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington). A year later Hannah was in Fast Company, about a baseball player (Jack Oakie) who is inspired to greatness thanks to fan letters he thinks come from a beautiful woman (Evelyn Brent) but are actually written by his conniving manager (Skeets Gallagher). In 1940, Oakie was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as a parody of Benito Mussolini in Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator.
- Joe DiMaggio, still a teenager, played for the San Francisco Seals in the Pacific Coast League from 1932 to 1935. Hannah, with the Los Angeles Angels, played against him often. Prior to DiMaggio's debut with the Yankees in 1936, a sportswriter asked the former big leaguer for his scouting report on DiMaggio. "They'll be comparing him to Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper and those fellows in a year or two," Hannah said. Truck was right: Speaker and Hooper were both Hall of Fame outfielders, and of course, so was the Yankee Clipper.
- In 1936, Hannah was a playecoach for the Los Angeles Angels. Ted Williams, already a legendary hitter (and pitcher) from his exploits at Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego, was being courted by both major and minor league teams. Ted's father, Sam Williams, was acting as his agent, and he arranged a meeting with Truck Hannah to talk about a contract with the Angels. "When my dad went down to talk to him, Hannah said, 'Where's the kid?'" Williams later recalled. "Dad says, 'He's not here.' Hannah said, 'Well, for crying out loud, go get him. He's the one I want to talk to, not you!'" Insulted, Sam Williams walked away. Instead, Williams -- after turning down offers from the Yankees and the Cardinals -- signed with the newly formed San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League. Had he signed with the Angels, Williams likely would have been a Cub, as they were a Chicago affiliate. (But Williams, a San Diego native, likely would have signed with the Padres even if Hannah had made a better impression.)
- Hannah's mouth almost cost his team another teenaged prospect. In 1934, 16-year-old Steve Mesner went to an open try-out for the Los Angeles Angels, and Hannah was helping to evaluate the prospects. He took one look at Mesner and shouted, "Get out of here, kid! You're too little!" Mesner started walking off the field, but someone told him to go back. During batting practice, he hit three balls over the fence! During a fielding drill, he was handling every chance, and the coach kept hitting them harder and harder, expecting the teenager to boot one. He didn't, and the team gave him a contract. Mesner hit .328 in three years with the Angels before going to the Chicago Cubs and later the Cincinnati Reds.
- The winter of 1918-1919 was gripped by the "Spanish Flu" epidemic and, in a scene that would be familiar to all of us today, the players, umpires, and fans in a Southern California winter league wore face masks during the game. A photo ran in the newspaper with the catcher misidentified in the caption as "Trash" Hannah of the New York Yankees!
- Hannah is a member of the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame. Some sources say he was an inaugural member when it was created in 1943; other sources say he was inducted in 1950. Other notable Yankees in the PCL HoF include Frankie Crosetti, Joe DiMaggio, and Casey Stengel.
- Hannah's daughter, U.S. Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant Helen Hannah Campbell, went to Whittier High School with Richard Nixon, and later served as a docent the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, California. Richard Nixon, who grew up watching Hannah as a player and manager in the Pacific Coast League, said in a 1983 interview: "I remember Truck Hannah. He was a great catcher and could hit."
- In 1925, Hannah helped organize the Association of Professional Ball Players of America, created to assist former professional baseball players who are injured, elderly, or destitute. The APBPA is still in existence today!
Near the end of his career, Truck Hannah was interviewed about the rigors of being a catcher. He said during his 30 years in baseball he'd broken every finger on his right hand at least twice. "What the hell, it's all part of the game," he said. "It sure was fun while it lasted. Even with busted hands and fingers and everything else, I wouldn't have missed it for the world."

2023.06.05 14:26 Travyswole Can you catch the UP at Pearson's without entering airport/security/customs?
Dumb question I bet, but my friend and I are visiting Toronto in August and our room is in Etobicoke near the airport (much cheaper than downtown Toronto where rooms were almost if not more than our plane tickets per night) and plan on taking our hotel shuttle to and from the airport to catch the UP downtown. My question is, can you just buy tickets and hop on or do you have to go thru security/customs as if your getting on a flight or is the station separate from the airport?

2023.06.05 14:13 celedrone AITA for asking my friend to leave my house?
We decided to host one of my friends, who I haven’t seen since in many years but called with regularly and we had to ask her to leave.
She was due to stay roughly two weeks. She tried to reschedule to stay another week and we were ready to have her gone.
We even had a friend who was planning to visit right after based on the original dates she’d given us and it didn’t occur to us that she would just try and reschedule.
A little bit about this visit:
-talked LOUDLY ALL THE TIME. I woke up one morning to a full volume call or something on speaker with a man nearly screaming? (I was just like Put. On. Headphones. Now.)
-we have a small collection of nice perfumes which we store in the bathroom next to our other personal hygiene items, she used multiple of them without asking (I smelled it and even if I hadn’t, the caps were on lopsided.)
-called my pet by a different name and tried to carry pet. My pet was polite but eventually started biting, scratching, and finally put shit in her suitcase. (She asked if she could use our all purpose spray for this like,,, yeah sure now you ask.)
-literally by like 2-3 days in she was asking me for my phone so she could order ubereats (and she eats like a full 3+ course meal every meal.) I had to say no, because I’m not spending $120+ every day? We had a kitchen full of food?
-literally visited for an event and presumably to go to the city + hang out with me a bit and proceeded to spend the rest of the time after the event just…sitting on our couch? I think she went to the city like 2 times other than for the event
-took like 2hr long showers (1 bathroom apartment)
-asked us to buy her an iphone using our apple cards so she could “pay us back” (we said no, obviously.) After my partner said no, she kept hounding me about it.
I had my partner ask her about her flight home, she said “I havent scheduled it yet” She initially said she would be here from the aforementioned dates, so we planned for that and had it in our calendar. Then she wanted to leave her luggage here while she stays at an airbnb the day of our other friend’s arrival (no.) and we finally had to put our foot(feet) down and just….the sheer entitlement.
She was even upset after I set the boundary and explained that she was going to need to find a hotel or AirBnB instead. After she left we needed a whole other 2 trashbags just for her takeout containers;…If you can afford that much ubereats, you can afford another place to stay, buddy.
Like…wanna stay an extra week on our couch (all day) for what exactly? I, for one, am never letting anyone who hasn’t already slept under the same roof as me or known me for at least ten years back in our house.
AITA?

2023.06.05 13:55 BRRRRAINS Ya'll stop wasting your time!
I've been seeing so many of ya'll posting about these cheap ass time wasters lately, and just.. no.
There is a block button for a reason!
I get that society raised you to think you need to be submissive and eager to please to "land a man", but that's not true at all! Men perpetuate that through media because it keeps them in power!
They only kind of man that wants a woman that will ask how high when he says jump is a manipulative predator.
Generous men do NOT ask you to jump through hoops. They do NOT ask for sexy pics. They do not talk about sex PERIOD until it is APPROPRIATE. They do NOT hear a boundary and immediately look for loopholes.
Generous men will be polite and respectful. When you meet, he will open the door. He doesn't make paying awkward because he naturally just takes care of everything. He doesn't ask for pics.. or anything really! Generous men understand that courting you is part of their job and they enjoy it.
If you meet a generous man, then you may be submissive and eager to please. But not until he has shown you he is indeed worthy of your submission - even then lots of guys still don't want some timid little thing. But frankly, if he is generous, you will WANT to make him happy. Generous men understand that. Cheap guys do not.
There are a LOT of cheap guys! Life is too short to entertain them. Make your standards HIGH!
He pokes at a boundary? BLOCK! He asks for a "sexy" pic? BLOCK! He starts being a fucking perv? BLOCK! He says he doesn't want to pay? BLOCK! He wants to go to your house asap? BLOCK! He wants to meet at a hotel for a M&G? BLOCK! If he says anything that gives you an ick, BLOCK HIS ASS!!!
If he is lucky enough to make it to a M&G with you, don't let your guard down! You can always leave.
YOU ARE THE PRIZE! Never forget that. A generous man will make you feel that way without having to ask. It's your job to find a delicate balance between being the prize, and making him feel like he is the prize.
You do NOT need to kiss a bunch of frogs to find your Daddy. You do have to STOMP through a bunch to find him, though.
And if you are here out of desperation, or you feel like this will pull you out of extreme poverty .. I'm sorry, but no. Doing this while desperate is a recipe for getting taken advantage of. While lots of men like to be a white knight, they are also typically the same type that is possessive and manipulative. If you won't be dissuaded, at the very least do not let these men know you are desperate EVER! It's like a flame for moths. And the moths are manipulative men. I highly recommend looking into escorting if you are in need. And if you feel that's ick.. you probably shouldn't be anywhere near SW.
Good luck and keep that block button ready!!

2023.06.05 13:14 snowboarding420 Visiting NYC tips - First time advice(almost)
Hello! My family son(9) , daughter(15), and wife will be visiting NYC July 7th. I have not been to NYC since the mid 90s and I need advice. We were planning on going to the yankees/cubs game that Friday night and leaving the next evening.
- We were thinking about staying Midtown at either the Hilton Garden, Ameritania, or the Hilton Midtown because of the close proximity to the 7th ave station, which I think if I am reading correctly should(B,D train) go straight to the Yankee stadium. Is this a good idea and is this the are where you guys would stay that is easy to get to the game and back and not crazy expensive?
- 2nd question, what is the best way to get here from Grand Central when we get there around around 11am, Taxi?
- What time do you recommend getting to the game? 5:30ish-6ish? Would you buy tickets that morning from Stubhub to save money and hopefully get closer tickets to the field for around 80-100 a ticket? Where to get decent food like snacks or subs to bring into the game?
- That will leave us for 5ish hours on Friday 11-5 and Saturday until 4ish(6ish hours) to see some sites and do things . We are traveling light with just backpacks which we will probably leave at the hotel, is this a good idea? How do tourists carry crap around NYC if you cannot bring them in or can you?
- Any suggestions on things to do either day? Friday I would think we would stay closer to midtown then Saturday maybe financial district or that general side of Manhattan but really up for anything. Must sees? Half the fam has already been to the top of the Rock so we can leave that out.
- Good pizza, breakfast, street food near our hotel(if this is everywhere then just say that, lol
l know this is a lot of questions but we are kind of lost on what we should do with our free time and want to maximize the experience. Sorry for the Novel but I thank you for the tips.

2023.06.05 13:07 ArticlesByAPhysicist Centurion SDW 100 Questions
Hi all, I've got a few questions about the SDW 100, but feel free to answer more generally.
For context, it'll be my first 100M, and my first over 50M, and my first non-loop ultra outside of training runs.
Q1: It's got free camping, and I'm tempted on the basis that it's at the start line, and I'm probably not going to sleep well anyway, so why not. But do lots of people camp? Are there any reasons not to beyond it being a bit less comfortable than a hotel? I guess I camp about once a year, so not a seasoned camper, but I know how to put up a tent. Should I expect my legs to be ruined by sleeping on a travel mat the night before, for instance?
Q2: The aid stations have tailwind and lots of other food / gels / etc., according to the website. Can I take food from the aid stations to carry. For instance, can I grab 4 gels and put them in my bag, or is that a no-no / impossible / impolite? I wouldn't do it if it was technically possible but poor form.
Q3: I haven't done nearly enough hill work for this sort of race. I'm tempted to take walking poles (I don't have running poles) to compensate a bit for that. Is that a good idea? At the moment I'm thinking of leaving them at the 56 mile point and seeing if I think I need them there, but if anyone has experience of taking them and regretting or not taking an regretting, let me know. Leaving at 56M as an option seems quite safe, though.
If anyone has any other questions about the SDW100, perhaps they could also ask here?

2023.06.05 13:02 IAmNotAFetish In a really bad spot. Not sure how to proceed to make my situation better
I wait tables and only have been making like 300 a week on average. I am currently homeless and been staying at a couple different hotels but last night I am slept in my car. I was thinking of renting a room through Padsplit or Craigslist but most rooms rent by the week. I am trying to get a better job but most jobs only pay every 2 weeks. So if I get a new job I would be without income for two weeks so how would I pay weekly rent ? I have 234 in my bank account right now and was thinking of renting a hotel room for the night but if I do that it might make it harder to find a more permanent room to rent because I would have less to go towards it.
My days off this week are Tuesday and Wednesday. Also the restaurant is not that busy during the week so my tips would probably only average between $40 and 60 dollars. I tried to go to this shelter near me and they said you have to be in by 830 every night but some nights I don't get out from work until 930 or 10.
What should I do? How do I go about improving my situation ? Should I at least get a hotel room for a few nights and worry about everything else later ?

Shore leave for the group finally rolled around and so the little gathering rode a shuttle down planetside. Seren, Eira, Scanner, Zana and the seven Bridge Bunny brothers. Claiomh fada, Sciath bhabhta, Casur cogaidh. Saighead direach, Miodog gearr, Dhorn tapaidh, and Blath dearg. Most just referred to them as the Bridge Bunnies as a running gag with the crew and because they tended to do everything together. They were one of the few survivors of a raid and had been forced to fend for themselves for a month before aid would arrive. Ever since they had been practically inseparable. For Conin they were unusually quiet and reserved, except when on the bridge or playing games. When they had learned that Seren was a raid survivor as well they had opened up to him greatly. Of all the crew it was the Bridge Bunnies that empathized the most with the Dynol's struggles to cope with the aftermath of surviving.
Seren had packed some sunscreen and a complete survival kit, much to Eira's chagrin and amusement. "I keep forgetting you Dynol burn so easy." She herself had packed a few things but was keeping them secret. "Five bottles though?"
"Right. Yn Gyntaf Ymhlith y Ser is a hotter world due to a slightly closer orbit to its star. Higher UV index than even my skin can likely handle. So does not hurt to be prepared." he explained as they prepared to disembark.
"The forests provide alot of shade though so you should be fine. Now get ready!" Eira churred in anticipation.
The disembarkation ramp lowered and the shore leave team stepped down into a very bright world.
Seren got to the bottom and nearly got run over by the others as he stood there gawking. "...the screw?" The port itself was enough to cause him to pause. The style was reminiscent of Ancient Earth and the American Wild West with a heavy dose of Victorian England. A mixture of stone, brick and wooden structures. The usually angular straight Llygoden Fawr font adorning shops and signs was more curly, almost like question marks rather than straight or angled lines.
"...the screw?" The mode of dress though was more like the styles of Sixteen-Hundred era Age of Sail. Elaborate dresses and vests, broad collars and adorned hats. Sweeping gowns, snug bodices, and even boots which were a rarity amongst any of the starfaring species other than the Dynol and Rana/Salamandra.
But the real "... the screw?" were the people. At first glance they were your average Llygoden Fawr. That is until it settled in that something was wrong with this picture. The most striking was the tail. It was a fluffy bush to put any Vulpes-Vulpes to shame in its luxurious fullness. The faces were not as long and the eyes were a bit larger than average. The ears too were different, standing up and pointed. "Giant space squirrels... the screw???"
Eira was enjoying Seren's reaction and the others were getting a chuckle from it as well. "ahhhhh! Worth keeping it a secret just to see you phased by something."
"That is an understatement." he admitted as he continued to gawk.
Eira led her companion out of the way of the other visitors and explained. "Mutation. Similar to the splits in the Vulpes. Happened about a hundred years ago and with each generation instances increased ten percent. Some radiation from the sun was the cause, again much like with the Vulpes. There were some other less pleasant birth defects, some lethal, that we had to do extensive genetic screening to cull from the populace. The people now are a stable mutation and have been designated Wiwer Fawr."
"Do not stand outside unprotected long. Got it." He took in the sight and then a huge grin spread as he saw something pulling into a station off in the distance. A train. Or more to the point. A Llygoden Fawr style mono-wheel steam train. And after a bit he saw some of the squirrel folk ride past mounted on what looked nothing so much as a four-legged sparrow head... "Ok. That is something you do not see every day either." A carriage pulled by one of these beasts passed as well not long after that.
"Coesau plu? Yeah. They are native to the homeden and we exported the hardier ones here. We used to ride them in our early civilization stages. The electromagnetic field of the planet during stormy season messes with electronics to the point it was more cost efficient to just transplant the coesau plu and use them as mounts and drays like in olden times." She pointed at the mono-wheel train pulling to the distant station. "And same for the trains. It's like stepping back in time a thousand years."
"I take it the archaic mode of dress is protective?"
"Got it in one. All of a sudden the hat business saw a boom."
Seren glanced around thoughtfully. "If the planet is that troublesome then why colonize it?"
"It is one of the few we have come across with a breathable atmosphere, tolerable environment, and isn't bathed in lethal radiation. And the asteroid belt is big and mineral rich. The land itself does wonders for plant life as you can see." Eira pointed at the tremendous looking forest off to the east from the starport. "Colonists have adapted to an arboreal city structure away from the starport. The giant trees afford extensive protection from the sun." Here the white furred rat woman gave a little shudder. "Wouldn't catch me living way up there!"
"Says the rat girl who lives in a home that is hanging from the ceiling of a cave." So teased the Dynol.
"Hey now. Stone is very safe!"
Seren noted though that the common tricorn-like hats many males wore made sense from a protective design standpoint. The forward point shaded the snout and the back points shaded the ears. He got an explanation from Eira that the clothes also served to bleed off excess heat and had a passive cooling system built into every garment. "So why the archaic dress style?" he questioned.
Eira grinned. "A chunk of the early colonists turned out to be historical re-enactment buffs and since the buildings were less high tech why not have fun with it? The idea caught on and now it's their cultural thing. There is even a recreation of a thousand year old town and surrounding farmsteads further north in the cooler zone."
The Dynol took all this in and smiled more and more. "So what is the plan then?" he asked wile pulling out his silver reflective rat mask and donning it. The mask was treated against UV so was a better choice than his usual blister goggles. "I think we are all going to need at least hats pronto, yes?" Said with a worried glance at Scanner, Zana and the Bridge Bunnies who were all shielding their eyes with a paw as the looked around. "I doubt any of us wants to be holed up in a hotel all week right?"
"Right. There's a hat shop nearby for exactly that and right next door a visor shop. Both accommodate large folk." the Security Tech informed them. But I have something for you first." Here she pulled out a hat that was like a tall sloping hill with the long point in front and just a single short back facing point. Set in it was a white feather. "One of my distant cousins gave me this last visit. Never quite suited my style. But the blue happens to match your usual taste in off duty colors."
Seren accepted the gift and tried it on. "How do I look?"
Eira churrred with pleasure. "mmmmm! With the mask on you look like the Phantom Rider!" We need to get you fully dressed up now!"
"uh-oh!"
Scanner and the others of the party were still busy gawking as they had never actually made planetfall in all the years of being on Patrol. "Well this is different." the grey Backeneko drawled in amusement at the sight of the fluffy tailed Wiwer Fawr and the peculiar architecture.
Zana was looking wide eyed in delight at everything and her fluffy tail was practically vibrating with excitement. "They are so adorable!"
"Miss Zana. Please refrain from terrorizing the countryside hugging everything." Seren deadpanned. Vulpes-Canis were a very touchy-feely people and the large curly haired dog girl was like the poster pup for her species. She liked to just pick up the Dynol and hug him to death, or on coinciding lunch breaks she would sit him in her lap and idly pet him. The other Vulpes-Canis on the Patrol Carrier would do the same. Just not as grabby as the Wraith Pilot. She at least did not handle him while he was working. But she would sit and just raptly watch him work. The big dog folk's fascination with Dynol was well documented.
"Oh come on! I let you go... eventually." was accompanied by Zana's merry barking laughter and wagging tail.
Seren had to admit that the starfighter pilot had the reflexes to back up her rampant people pouncing. She could also beat him eight times out of ten at go-cart racing. "So what's the plan then Eira? You -did- have a plan? Riiiiight?" he nudged the rat alien.
"Sure do. I pre-ordered some steam train tickets to the great northern city of Gaer Garreg Werdd yn y Goedwig. It is a recreation of a fortress city from the homeden that was a major steam hub back in the day. It's now a sort of historical re-enactment with people acting out living the way folk used to." She displayed for all a paper map and traced a claw from the starport to their intended destination. "Big tourist attraction and there's a regular re-enactment of a raid by the Crwydriaid y Mor yn Dwyn Gwaywffyn, sea going aboriginals who raided inland every few years well into our early steam age. Quite a nuisance."
"Australia gets invaded by Hawaii." quipped the Dynol.
"I have no idea what you are referencing. But I know it is something embarrassing!"
They all made haste to the hat shop and it was Seren's turn to be embarrassed at being complimented for his Phantom Rider cosplay. Eira had her own hat as well. A white tricorn with a badge pinned to one side and several short square-ish red feathers sticking out back of it. "This is my dad's hat. He used to live here for a few years before getting his hauler gig."
"What is the badge for?" Asked one of the Bridge Bunnies.
"Ah that was for rescuing some folk who got lost in the deep forests. Dad was a pretty good tracker." Eira explained while tracing a finger round the brass badge. "The feathers represent how many people he saved. Six total."
The Bridge Bunnies each purchased high topped broad rimmed black hats with a green band around the base. They looked a bit like triangular witch hats with the point removed. Zana selected bonnet and Scanner donned her own green wild west style hat with one side pinned up. All the head-ware had built in heat dissipation materials to help disperse built up UV warming.
Next they ambled over to the clothes shop and here Eira helped Seren pick out a long coat in blue that went with his hat. "Yeah! Very Phantom Rider now! Just need to get you a silver steam pistol and a white coesau plu."
"Eira... Is this a vacation? Or dress up doll?"
"Why not both?"
Scanner picked out a woman's riding outfit in green while the seven lapine brothers all selected elegant coats and pants with buckled shoes. They looked reminiscent of Spanish aristocrats dressed so. Especially with the frilly lace. Zana dressed in a gown that spread out in all directions. She blushed so much it was visible through her cheek fur when Seren teased that she could hide all of the Bridge Bunnies under her petticoats.
All done with basic shopping they stopped by to say hello to Eira's distant cousin. This fellow was a Wiwer Fawr of a light brown fur pattern and blue eyes. "Eira ar y Blodau! Been three years since saw you last! Welcome Welcome!" He looked over the masked Dynol curiously. "Why are you so cute with that mask on? I am Gwynt Drwy'r Canghennau. You must be Llygaid Llawn o Ser my cousin has written about?"
"Probably unless she has more than one Dynol wrapped up in her tail." grinned the Systems Tech.
Gwynt grinned at that. "If the rumors are true then just one of you is more than enough." The squirrel-like alien and the human exchanged the double paw clasp greeting and then everyone padded over to an shaded eatery sized for small and large folk. "You hit a good time to visit. This is the cool season. Temperature will spike for three months during the hot storm season. Warm rain and high winds. Great for the plant life. But whooo! Don't plan on traveling!"
They got to try out the local quinine including bara haen fewnol, which was akin to a calzone stuffed with cheeses, a white cream sauce, ground nuts, lettuce and carrot equivalents, and strips of coesau plu meat for the omnivores in the group. Scanner and Zana had roast coesau plu with a selection of greens the two carnivores could ingest. From the store owner Seren learned that the Cozi Mari was picking up a shipment of meat to supplement the more carnivore sided crew's diets.
Gwynt would be joining the group as their guide while planet-side. Mostly just an excuse to catch up with Eira and socialize with aliens. "Not many offworlders stay long for obvious reasons. Too bad you Dynol can not improve the conditions here like are on the other colony."
"I am no terraforming expert, but the problem here is a bit more involved. Fixing it would require moving the planet's orbit or thickening the atmosphere to increase UV shielding. Any of which might disrupt the ecology established here." suggested Seren. "That is even assuming we could alter the orbit without wrecking the planet."
"Tis what I heard last time it was discussed. The trees here are dependent on the increased solar intake and adding more cloud cover might well cause them to weaken or outright die. There's also worry that thickening the atmosphere could increase the intensity and duration of the storms we get." A flick of the squirrel's bushy tail fore-back-fore showing his reluctant acceptance of that.
"It is a planet we Dynol would have passed on during survey simply because it would be more likely to make things worse trying to make it more agreeable for habitation. As is you need alot of tech solutions to stay here right?"
"Correct. But it is not bad once you get used to it and we have adapted to the environment slowly."
"At a cost." Seren pointed out.
Gwynt nodded. "At a cost yeah."
Seren shrugged. "Maybe in time a better solution can be had. Right now the tech just has not caught up to being able to handle a situation like this. So you are to be commended for sticking it out and finding solutions outside the box."
That perked up the tan furred squirrel and after everyone had eaten and gotten a drink they set about picking up another local to join on the trip. That being Gwynt's fiance Erlid Awyr y Nos. Erlid was a solid pitch black of fur and had bright red eyes. She was a shipping clerk for the starport. She also complimented Seren on his Phantom Rider cosplay. Much to Eira's continued entertainment at the Dynol's expense.
Finally it came time to board the train and Seren got to see first hand a functional and fully restored mono-wheel steam train. The engine and tender were were Thirty meters long and the main engine consisted of four interlinked mono-wheels. The series engine was surprisingly powerful and the train could pull eight-hundred unit-tons. Eira explained a little of the history as everyone boarded. "Very early on we developed parallel wheel designs. But one experimental company pushed for the mono-wheel design and it gained popularity and quickly muscled out other designs."
Gwynt added to this. Mono-wheels have always been a design aspect of transportation and no one is exactly sure when it supplanted other styles of wheels. Part of the success was very early gear and stabilizing breakthroughs."
"Due to the stopping problems when not used in series?" guessed Seren.
"Exactly. Early mono-bikes were more than a little harrowing to stop at speed." Gwynt grinned. "But were too fun to drop for safer designs. The basis worked fine. It was the sudden stops that kept leading to accidents. Speed laws were for a good while very strict. But people were always pushing it when out away from the dencities. Eventually someone hit on a pivoting gyro system to counter the rotation problem. The trains did not suffer that problem and just needed stationary bracing legs when at a stop."
The passenger cars were luxurious with padded seats and even a dining and lounge car. The sleeping cars were just as finely crafted of metal and wood. Each car of the mono-train was accessible via two doors, one on either side of each car's center-line wheel. Some luggage and cargo was packed into the lower parts of each sphere that comprised a car. The ride was scheduled to take a twenty-two hour day to cover some one-thousand kilo-units distance.
And so plans were made as to what to do during the shore leave at the re-enactment site and surrounding tree-city.

2023.06.05 12:32 Boomeru8 Flights to Fiji way cheaper than Papeete or Bora Bora
trying to book a flight for this thanksgiving break to a pacific island and my three main options are flying into NAN, PPT, or BOB from LAX. What I’ve noticed though, is that the flight to NAN is only 650$ despite being way longer (almost twelve hours) and business is 3500$ and then to PPT or BOB its nearly 3600$ in basic economy (points redemption are the same for both in economy - 40K) Is there any reason for this? Do yall think the cheaper prices for Fiji mean we should just go there, or are the hotels more expensive and it’ll end up cancelling out when compared to the others. 4 people btw

2023.06.05 12:26 lilpretzelstickz Butthurt because I don't like being scared
I should start this off by clarifying I am autistic and at this time,(2 days ago) I was on holiday with my famlly in a city I had never been before. At this point we were split up doing out own thing, and I was already unhappy because it was very crowded and I hate really tall buildings and sky scrapers and unexpected noises. I was not doing hunky dory, google maps wasn't working very well, (it had me facing the wrong way and I was having a lot of trouble figuring it out.) I was lost, upset and very nearly crying. At this point, she spotted me and thought: "what's the best time to scare my autistic child? When he's in a city he doesn't know and is by himself and has been miserable this whole time, even though he would cry whenever he would lose me in the supermarket well into his teen years? Yea that's a good time." I felt as though I left my body. I was terrified for my life until I realized it was her. My reaction was to yell "fuck off" and attempt to push her away. Later on, I refused to leave to hotel room to go out to dinner because I had already had enough of this trip and it has been far too much very overwhelming and I was very close to a meltdown. She said "are you punishing me for trying to scare you?" Suprisingly no. I've just had enough of this trip since 5 MINUTES IN.
I realize now her entitlement is a very small part if this story so i'll add another from the same trip.
we had just landed from the flight and had been in this city for 5 minutes. Mum asked to take a photo of me I said no, 30 seconds later she takes a photo thinking I don't notice and I calmly take her phone off her, and she says "I'm just saying to watch out for the pink hair!" All defensive like. I give her phone back cause it's not worth it to start a fight. Its as if i didnt have a choice, she was going to take a photo of me, regardless of my consent.(this an ongoing problem where she constantly takes photos without my consent, this one was recent and pretty notable.)
She says that I'm not financially responsible enough for her to give me my inherentance from recently deceased relative, I own a company and I dont live with her. If enough people are interested I can elaborate on this and she has withheld my savings from me until recently also.
These are not completely outrageous stories, but it's nice getting it off my chest and having people listen.
TL;DR: don't click on long posts if you aren't gonna read them.

2023.06.05 12:01 FrenchFries-_- WHY SUDDENLY I STARTED SEEING THINGS??
This started a few months back, I can suddenly feel if someone like some kind of spirit or entity or energy is present in any certain area and i can feel it if it is good or bad , male or female and it’s appearance.
So the first incident was when I could feel my grandfather(maternal) who passed was 5years ago standing near me while I was sleeping and everyday I can feel his presence near me. Then slowly I can feel my other grandfather ( paternal: died 25years ago) with him on various occasions. Then I started feeling and sometimes can see(not properly but with side eyes) a black shadow figure lurking in my house, it had a very negative presence due to which I constantly had headaches, body pain and fevers. I started praying and meditation because my mom used to see departed family members and we all believed in light and dark. But this kept increasing.. now i can feel these energy everywhere.
I travel a lot due to my work and recently we went to a hotel in another state and there I saw a guy in my dreams who said his reason of death and then the next morning when i asked the hotel manager about the same he confirmed !! And this happened multiple times. I don’t know what to do!
I am very scared and curious at the same time.

2023.06.05 11:52 SomewhereInLDN The EP benefited Dave more than CC
First I want to highlight how incredibly disgusting the tape is, I believe there is something for everyone on this EP. It’s short and sweet so replay value is clearly there!
But it had me thinking why did Dave do a collab with Cench? In my opinion Dave has peaked in the UK scene and has no where near the global appeal as Cench, so doing an EP with the Cench who has a huge global fan base is the way forward. Somewhat reminded me of 6 paths Dave, the hunger on those tracks rapping as if his life depends on it.
For me, Cench agreed because he wants to prove he’s actually a decent rapper, imo he gets more hate in the UK than anywhere else & working on a tape with Dave is a luxury. They both benefited from this EP but I think Dave did more if the aim is to bring global attention.
What’s your thoughts on what I said and what’s everyone’s favourite song?

luxury Airbnb Fort Lauderdale.
Here are a few things to think about when booking a rental property for your next vacation:
- 📷
- Price - Since money is of the essence during a vacation, it is important to set a budget for accommodations, and then narrow the selection to vacation rentals that meet the budget.
- Accommodation Size - Since this depends on the number of people in the group, it is also an important consideration. The layout of the rooms is also significant, since it must be suitable for families, groups of friends, or solo travellers.Larger homes or cabins are a better fit for groups, while cozy condos or cottages are just right for a couple.
- Location - You should prioritize finding vacation homes in a location that is convenient for the activities you want to do while away. You may easily visit local beaches, ski resorts, stores, and restaurants on foot from a property that is situated in a convenient central location. On the other side, if you’d rather avoid the crowds, you might choose a more rural property that offers more seclusion.

2023.06.05 09:37 Blessings_Found1 Best Area to Stay in as a First-Timer?
Hey everyone. I’m looking to book a trip to Barbados for this weekend and am trying to sort out where to stay. I’ve read online that near Bridgetown where the Radisson and Hilton hotels are is the best area for first-timers as it’s close to everything, but then I saw near Oistin Bay would be better suited. I was looking at the Bougainvillea and it seems like a nice hotel. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? We want beach adventures, cultural excursions, and of course to take in y’alls night life. Any advice or suggestions is much appreciated! Thank you.
