Good evening everyone, hope you're all enjoying the sun! Goodness knows I'm more red than a the Essex flag thanks to a day in Harwich. Anyway, to the point. Essex will be joining the reddit lockdown on the 12th of June. From around 7am that morning people will not be able to comment or post in the subreddit. The reason for this is because the reddit team are making changes to their API, charging excessive amounts for third party applications, pricing even the best performing developers out of being able to compete. There's more information below:

It's simple to see why this is a bad move, worse than trying to avoid potholes in Colchester. In solidarity with the third party application developers, and alongside the other subreddits that are locking down, Essex will add it's name to the list. We might be relatively small, but we're mighty.

Following on from the consultation thread we posted yesterday, and due to the overwhelming majority supporting participation, we can confirm that /AMD will be taking part in the Reddit blackout from June 12-14, to protest upcoming API changes that will kill 3rd party apps.

What's happening?

• Third Party Reddit apps (such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun and others) are going to become ludicrously more expensive for it's developers to run, which will in turn either kill the apps, or result in a monthly fee to the users if they choose to use one of those apps to browse. Put simply, each request to Reddit within these mobile apps will cost the developer money. The developers of Apollo were quoted around $2 million per month for the current rate of usage. The only way for these apps to continue to be viable for the developer is if you (the user) pay a monthly fee, and realistically, this is most likely going to just outright kill them. Put simply: If you use a third party app to browse Reddit, you will most likely no longer be able to do so, or be charged a monthly fee to keep it viable.
• NSFW Content is no longer going to be available in the API. This means that, even if 3rd party apps continue to survive, or even if you pay a fee to use a 3rd party app, you will not be able to access NSFW content on it. You will only be able to access it on the official reddit app. Additionally, some service bots (such as video downloaders or maybe remindme bots) will not be able to access anything NSFW. In more major cases, it may become harder for moderators of NSFW subreddits to combat serious violations such as CSAM due to certain mod tools being restricted from accessing NSFW content.
• Many users with visual impairments rely on 3rd-party applications in order to more easily interface with reddit, as the official reddit mobile app does not have robust support for visually-impaired users. This means that a great deal of visually-impaired redditors will no longer be able to access the site in the assisted fashion they’re used to.
• Many moderators rely on 3rd-party tools in order to effectively moderate their communities. When the changes to the API kicks in, moderation across the board will not only become more difficult, but it will result in lower consistency, longer wait times on post approvals, modmails, and reports, and much more spam/bot activity getting through the cracks.

What's next?

In lieu of what's happening above, an open letter has been released by the broader moderation community, and we will be supporting it.
Part of this initiative includes a subreddit blackout (meaning, the subreddit will be privatized) on June 12th, lasting 48 hours. During this time, you will not be able to browse, post, or comment on this subreddit.

Hello there, my name is Coach Chesster(Yes, an obvious Chess reference, which is, by far, my favorite game). On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill a lot of third-party apps on Reddit.
An open letter asks subs to initiate a blackout on June 12th.
A blackout means a subreddit will go private for that time. Some subs will do a blackout for 24 hours, and some for 48 hours. This isn't a very big subreddit, but as moderators, we're here to serve this subreddit's interest, so we didn't want to make a decision on our own. Instead, we'll do a poll for you to decide whether you want PHPHelp to join this blackout or not. It'll mean you won't be able to use PHPHelp for 24 or 48 hours.

Hey All,
Up until recently I mainly messed around with Death, Thrash and post-metal. But I've reconnected with a drummer from back in the day and things are getting doomy. I play a 6505 112 with another 112 extension cab that has always been sufficient. With the doom stuff I'm getting there with a DOD carcosa on the crunch channel and it definitely was struggling on the low end.
So I put a Swamp thang speaker in the combo. I'm really enjoying that. Also on a whim I added an Acapulco gold and now I'm hooked!. I dont think I can make that tone work all the time. But it sure is great to mess around with.
I'm wondering if getting this metal amp to doom may start to have diminishing returns? Also, the louder we go the more 6505 fizzy flavor comes out, teh new speaker helped but its still there. I started looking at solid state Hiwatt crunch 150s and Randalls. I'm not really in a place to drop 2k on a matamp or Rockerverb yet. Any suggestions on stuff that can be found new? I understand used Laneys and stuff like that are a steal. But I haven't seen a fair priced one for a while.

Every small town has its urban legend, utilized to pass the time as the tedious years go by. My hometown of Sour Lake, Texas, was no different. The last time I saw anyone excited was when a Sonic Drive-In moved into the old Pizza Hut building. I guess we tell these stories so the boredom doesn’t drive us insane.
What distinguishes Sour Lake from the other tiny dots on the map is the vast region of trees in our backyard. We fall right at the edge of “The Big Thicket,” a vast forest stretching over forty thousand miles and five states. There’s a trail that leads out of town and into the woods. If you follow the path for about half a mile, you’ll run into an open clearing of grass surrounded by giant, spindly Southern Live Oak trees.
And this is where our legend begins.
Texas doesn’t really have seasons. It gets hot, and if you’re lucky, it sometimes gets cold. But in Sour Lake, without fail, we get strong gusts of winds that signify the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The winds are so powerful they rattle the trees, making them “whisper.”
The legend states that if you go to the clearing around midnight, the trees will tell you a secret only you can know. The secrets are a mix of good and bad. Some learn a clue that leads to luck and fortune. Others get a premonition that leads to inevitable pain and suffering.
My grandfather, always a jokester, claimed that the trees told him my Nana had a crush on him when they were in high school. My Nana said the woods informed her of her father’s impending death. They would regale my siblings and me with tales of people who suffered horrible fates and somehow always tied it to children behaving poorly.
It was all a load of horseshit. My grandpa bribed my Nana’s brother to retrieve her diary for him to snoop through. My great-grandpappy was close to four hundred pounds and was essentially a walking heart attack. He “mysteriously” dropped dead when my Nana was in high school. Still, every year, a group of teenagers take the path out of town and listen to the trees.
There were rules, though. The winds would blow for a week or so, but you could only receive one secret per year. Those who tried to break this rule would have their secret forfeited, and they would be cursed. You could also never disclose the secret to anyone until it happened. If you shared your secret with someone, you would again be cursed. I was never sure what the curse “was,” but supposedly, it was worse than death itself.
I was always skeptical of the story but was convinced by my group of friends to make the trip during the last week of September. It was 1992. I had just started my freshman year of high school and was determined to fall in with the “popular” crowd. At the time, that meant doing whatever anyone else was doing. Plus, the idea of sneaking out of my house past curfew gave me a huge adrenaline rush.
My best friend Matt Stevens came by my bedroom window around 11:30 pm. I walked past my parent’s room and heard the loud snores of my dad giving me the green light to leave. Matt was waiting with some older kids and my new crush, Sophie Barrett. I knew I had to do something memorable to impress her.
We trekked to the clearing, giggling and whispering amongst ourselves, our only light source being a weak flashlight and the dim Harvest Moon. I remember Johnny Polk, a smooth-talking junior, smoking cigarettes and offering drags to the other girls. Sophie laughed at his jokes the hardest, and I was emboldened to make a grander first impression.
Sometimes I wonder….
We soon reached the glade and laid out blankets on the grass. The giant Southern Live Oaks formed a circle around us, with the tallest at the crest of the clearing circle. Even now, those trees make me feel so small, with their long contorting branches almost reaching out to touch you. They would have covered the sky if not for the gargantuan moon. I suddenly began to feel very unsettled. Our entire group fell silent, and you could only hear nothing but the winds approaching.
The trees began to shake and rattle, swaying their branches as the gusts moved through them. Leaves puttered down to the Earth, getting caught on our hair and clothes. I closed my eyes to listen and was surprised to hear a sound similar to whispers, though they were intelligible. I guessed this was how the legend started.
I studied the tallest tree again, looming over me like my father did while I was in trouble. There was something strange about it. I couldn’t quite describe it, but it was odd that one tree was more prominent than the rest. It didn’t just feel like a tree; it felt like something more, though I didn’t know what. I remember hiding my face in shame to avoid the tree’s gaze.
I glanced over at Johnny, who was muttering something in Sophie’s ear while she giggled with her hand over her mouth. My face burned with a confusing and unwanted rage. Now was my chance.
I hopped up and marched toward the giant tree, ignoring the other folks as they whisper-shouted at me to stop. I grabbed the first branch I could reach and began to climb, hearing the cheers and jeers from below. I arrived near the top and looked at my friends, now looking like mindless insects. I removed my shirt and tied it to the tallest branch I could reach, making my mark like Neil Armstrong did when he landed on the moon, which now seemed so close.
I shuffled down the tree, basking in the hooping and hollering of the older kids. “Jesus, that Jimmie kid is gnarly,” one of the older guys said. Sophie ran up to me and pushed my chest, “Jimmie Anderson, you had me worried sick!” she yelled angrily before starting to laugh. I puffed out my bare chest when I noticed Johnny Polk sulking in the corner.
I sat next to Sophie for the rest of the night, looking at her as the breeze lifted her blonde hair, not knowing I was in love for the first time. We stayed for a bit longer until one of Sophie’s friends said she wanted to go home. “I feel like we’re being watched or something,” she whispered, clearly rattled. We brushed her off at first, but I also remember feeling off….like we weren’t the only ones in the clearing.
We got up and made our way home. I walked Sophie back to her house when she asked me on the porch if the trees told me a secret. I replied no, and Sophie said she didn’t either, but I remember feeling like she wasn’t truthful with me. However, I didn’t protest when she impulsively kissed me and hustled inside. I floated back to my house on clouds, not even caring that my parents were waiting in the kitchen to tear my ass a new one.
The rest of my life began on that day.
I finished high school and went to college in Houston before attending law school in Austin. I passed the bar and surprisingly found myself back in Sour Lake when new mayor Matt Stevens convinced me to run for District Attorney. I won in a landslide victory and moved back home. Sophie Barrett was by my side the entire time. We married shortly after the move, and she confessed to me that the trees told her she was among her future husband that night. I laughed, thinking she was telling me a joke.
Now, I’m not so sure.
I’ve never been back to that forest clearing. After all, it was just a stupid tale to pass the time and let young adults get their first taste of independence. I was too busy anyways, spending my days locking up drunk drivers and the occasional bar fight or indecent exposure. It was a peaceful life.
I’ve been prosecuting cases in Sour Lake for almost twenty years now. Never once did I have a murder case on my docket. Never once did I anticipate that the darkest recesses of humanity from other cities would creep into our boring but tranquil town.
But they did.
Last October, Sadie Anderson, a fourteen-year-old freshman at Henderson High School, was found behind a dumpster near a campsite in the forest. Sadie had been stabbed over fifty times, and her body was initially unrecognizable until her poor mother identified her by the small birthmark on her shoulder. She suffered. There could have been no doubt about it.
The whole town was shaken. No one I talked to could remember a murder, much less that of a child. We combed the entire county for every pedophile and gutter punk, but police found nothing that could place any of them at the scene of the murder. Every hour that passed was its own personal hell. Sadie’s mother checked herself into a mental facility as she was tempted to harm herself. I remember her telling me she wanted to suffer like her daughter suffered.
The investigation began to stall until two weeks ago when Kaylin Booker’s mother found a concerning entry while snooping through her fourteen-year-old daughter’s diary. Kaylin's journal listed a plan detailing how her friends Maddie Spears and Becca Hollis invited her out into the woods.
When Kaylin arrived at the campsite one Saturday evening, Becca and Maddie were there with Sadie Anderson. The two girls then produced two cheap kitchen knives purchased from the dollar store and stabbed Sadie Anderson to death. They then forced Kaylin to help conceal the body and warned her they would do the same if she told. When questioned by the police, the two girls confessed. And when asked why they would kill their friend, the girls stated plainly:
“Because the trees told us to.”
Pandaemonium ripped through Sour Lake, and parents furiously turned on the town. Children were now forbidden to go to the woods, and a permanent curfew was instituted by Mayor Stevens. Conspiracy theories and vicious rumors spread through the town, pitting lifelong friends against each other. Thousands of dollars were spent to quash headlines like “Urban Legend Leads to Murder?” or “A New Slenderman in Sour Lake?”
The girls remained steadfast and even obstinate that the trees told them to kill one of their best friends. The friend who was always kind and loyal to them. The friend who listened to their problems and helped them find solutions. The same friend who never missed a stupid birthday or gossipy sleepover. The friend who showed them nothing but kindness and love because that’s the way she was raised to treat others.

I had to recuse myself from the case, of course. After all, what DA can be impartial when prosecuting his only daughter’s killers? The girls have now refused to cooperate with law enforcement. One of my colleagues, a lawyer from Beaumont, has been assigned to the case. He’s recommended placing both the girls in an institution until their 21st birthday and making this all go away quietly. I am too numb to feel anything about the deal. All I can think about is Becca and Maddie staring straight into my soul with dead, unflinching eyes at their arraignments. One of them seemed to smirk.
I’m sitting alone on the couch with the TV on for background noise. My oldest son, back from college, stares into space, checking his phone to see if his mother called. My middle son, a high school junior, is locked in his room. I can feel his anger and confusion seeping down the staircase. I don’t know how to talk to him.
I get up and leave the house without anyone noticing. I follow the path into the woods as the sweltering May heat sticks my shirt to my skin. There will be no Autumn winds tonight. I enter the clearing and sit down on the grass. I can feel the weight of the trees circling around me, leaning in to scrutinize me after all these years. The moon shines above me, bearing witness in its crescent phase as if it’s hiding behind a corner. I light a cigarette and let the flame of the lighter dance on my palm.
The giant tree I climbed all those years ago stares down at me like a judge on the bench. Its branches slowly sway in the slight breeze, cracking and moaning as if it’s taunting me. I close my eyes and listen to the forest hum. My ears begin to twitch.
“...this...iS…wHaT….YoU….GET….” I think I hear faintly in the distance. I nod somberly.
In these woods, the trees whisper.

If you haven't heard by now, Reddit has announced significant upcoming changes to their API that will seriously impact many of its users, including many members of Bible. This has been making new cycle headlines for a week now, and the discussion around it is taking over sections of the Website.
There is currently a planned protest across hundreds of subreddits to black out on June 12th. Rooner and I have been discussing our participation in this event and decided that we will take part in it. We care deeply about our community and don't want to see it harmed because of greedy development changes.

What's Happening

• Third-party Reddit apps (such as Sync, Reddit is Fun, among others) are set to become significantly more costly for their developers to maintain. This could either kill these apps or necessitate a monthly fee from users who choose to use these apps for browsing. When the changes to the API are implemented, moderation across the board will not only become more challenging, but it will result in less consistency, longer wait times on post approvals and reports, and an increase in spam/bot activity slipping through the cracks. In discussions with mods on many subreddits, many longtime moderators will simply leave the site. Despite Redditors traditionally criticizing moderators, the truth is that they contribute a tremendous amount of unpaid work, and without them, the entire site would markedly decline in quality and usability.

So I am trying to put together a very solid gaming and editing build for my first build. I make gaming videos and basically trying to find out what will be better for my system. I wont be editing in 4k or 8k so i don't need that much performance but i want to take advantage of the av1 and i will be editing in davinci resolve. most of my gameplay will be in 1080p60. So any help will be appreciated trying to lower the cost as much as i can while still keeping the ability to upgrade in the future hence the AM5 motherboard.

I (20F) recently contributed all my savings to help my mom buy our first house.
A little bit of background info, I moved to stay with my mom like 7 years ago along with my older sister (25) and my little sister (7) who was already living with my mom. I was sleeping on the couch the whole time which was uncomfortable. I also had no life in hs because I had to babysit. I worked really hard in hs got a full ride plus some to my top college which was out of state. Since I started college I kept urging my mom to buy a house because I didn’t sleeping on the couch. She had so many requirements for what she wanted in a house that it was near impossible to find any. I even told her to just find a house and I would help pay for the down payment because the prices for houses just kept going up. She finally decided that she would try to buy a house by May of this year. I go back to school and later find out that she spent over $20k to buy a Benz because “she works too hard and deserves a little reward”.
Then she finally called me at school in April and said she found a house that it was the one. She sent me the link for the listing and come to find out that it was a brand new house and they just finished building it. This house was way out of our budget and like three times our monthly rent if we decided to buy it. She insisted that it was the one and put an offer on it. The house was listed at $500k. The bank then told her that her annual income was too low and they couldn’t give her a loan that big. She somehow found a way to make her income bigger which mean that she had to pay money back to the IRS. And the down payment plus closing was over $50k and I knew she didn’t have that much so I gave her all my savings which was $20k and my older sister contributed $5k but it was nowhere near enough. I told her to just give up and find a new house later. I had finals coming up so I just gave up.
She texted the beginning of May that she got the house and I kept insisting on how she got the money but she said she had extra savings somewhere and I said I was happy for her.
I get home after the semester ends and I see all these new furniture, appliances literally everything is new in the new house. And I told her to just keep the old stuff for now and we can buy new stuff when we get the money. She tells me that she still has some savings left and that it was okay. She later the tells me that she got a new bank and they completely decreased the $50k to $28k for both down payment and closing.Meaning that majority of the money we used to buy this house is mine which pissed me off. Monthly rent for the flat is 3200 pounds per month split between three parties, and utility bills will be around 30-40 per month per person.
The flat has Three bedrooms, a shared bathroom and a kitchen big enough to have a dining table, with a washer and dryer as well.
The contract spans from the 1st of July 2023 till the 1st of July 2024, with no further pushback on the date.
It’s a great location and a sizeable property for its price, being right next to the British library and St Pancras!
The both of us are university students, and we’re open to staying with anyone, with only one condition.

Hey CFL Fam
After a lot of internal discussions and weighing the pros and cons (this time of the year is usually when we get our biggest boost of new subs and curious visitors), we have decided to join the protest against Reddit's new API pricing strategy. As such, this sub will be going private on June 12th.
We have not yet established a date as to when we will be made public again and wish to defer to the communities opinion on that. Please let us know if you feel we should maintain this protest indefinitely or re-open after a specific period of time.

Hey everyone,
Reddit recently announced some changes to their API that may have a big impact to how you use Reddit. You've probably already seen quite a few posts like this on other subreddits you browse. We're joining those subreddits.
TLDR:

• This subreddit will be made private (meaning you will not be able to view any of its contents) on June 12th.
• Reddit is making it impossible for third-party apps used to browse the site to exist, as some of them will have to pay upwards of $2 million per month. This means they will most likely shut down or impose monthly fees on their users.
• You can help. Read below to learn how.

Context
Third-party Reddit apps such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, Boost and others are going to become a lot more expensive for their developers to run. This, in turn, will either kill the apps, or result in their developers imposing monthly fees to users if they choose to use the apps to browse Reddit. Why? Because these apps make requests to the Reddit API to fetch data among other things, and each request made by any user will cost the app developers money. For example, the developers of the very popular third-party Reddit browsing app Apollo were quoted upwards of $2 million per month for their current API usage rates. The only way for third-party apps to be viable is if you, the user, pay a monthly fee. However, realistically, this would most likely kill them. To put it simply:

If you use a third-party app to browse Reddit, you will most likely no longer be able to do so or be charged a monthly fee by its developers.

In addition to this, NSFW content will no longer be available in the API. This means that you will no longer be able to access NSFW content on third-party apps, and will only be able to access it on the official mobile Reddit app. Also, bots such as video downloaders or reminder bots will not be able to access any NSFW content. It will also become harder for moderators of NSFW subreddits to combat very serious violations such as CSAM due to moderation tools not being able to access the content.
Why This Matters

• According to our traffic stats, over 27% of you use a third-party app to browse this subreddit. This is a big portion of our users who are being forced to change the way they browse Reddit.
• People with visual impairments have problems using the official mobile app. The removal of third-party apps will significantly hinder their ability to browse Reddit.
• Many moderators, including people on our team, are going to be significantly hindered from moderating their communities. Third-party apps provide us moderation tools the official mobile app simply doesn't have. For you, this means longer wait times on post report decisions, modmails, etc.
• We use Reddit's API for user-facing subreddit features we've developed in-house, such as the highlighting of post comments made by PUBG staff, or the automatically updating subreddit banner we had during PGS 1. The changes would likely impact these systems.

Open Letter to Reddit
In light of what's happening, an open letter has been released by the broader Reddit moderator community. guitars is supporting it. Please consider giving it a read and signing on.
Subreddit Blackout
On June 12th, lots of subreddits will be going dark to protest these changes. Some will return after 48 hours, while others will go away permanently unless this is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to all the work they do with the poor moderation tools available in the official app. Us, subreddit moderators, do what we do because we love Reddit, we love our communities, and truly believe that these changes will make it impossible to keep doing what we love, which is why we've decided to join all of those subreddits.
This collective action is intended to raise awareness and urge Reddit to reconsider their recent API changes. Our primary goal is to initiate a productive dialogue with Reddit, leading to a reversal of the detrimental modifications they have implemented.

"Going dark" means the subreddit will be made private. You won't be able to view any of its contents.
We understand this will be an inconvenience but believe it's necessary for the long-term future of Reddit as well as the broader PUBG community. Over 200 thousand people visit this subreddit each month, so we want this to be something the community cares about enough that we can all come together and say something collectively with our actions.
What You Can Do

1. Complain. Message the mods of reddit, who are the admins of the site. Submit a support request. Comment in relevant threads on reddit, such as this one.
2. Spread the word. Discuss on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Complain about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at ModCoord. (Please don't spam modmail inboxes or anything like that though!)
3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th. Instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite and reasonable as possible.

What's happening with Reddit?

Many users here choose to browse Reddit using a 3rd party mobile app, for a variety of reasons. Some are unhappy with the state of the official app, others simply want a more customized experience while scrolling posts. Regardless of the reason, these apps, such as Infinity, Apollo, Bacon, RiF, Boost, etc. will all be shutting down in the coming months if changes are not made on Reddit's side.
 
Reddit is making changes that make it financially unfeasible to run a 3rd party mobile app as a developer. 3rd party apps used to be able to access Reddit's data for free, but Reddit is now asking for an exorbitant fee for access to its API. Additionally, Reddit is removing the ability to advertise from these 3rd party apps, meaning that they will be forced to use a subscription model.
 
Even if 3rd party Reddit apps survive, NSFW content will also become inaccessible via Reddit's API. What this means for users is that 3rd party apps will no longer be able to display NSFW content at all.
 
Even if you don't use Reddit on a mobile device at all, this is likely only a single step in making the Reddit experience poorer overall. Other methods of customizing Reddit such as RES or even Old Reddit could be next on the chopping block.

What is the purpose of this protest?

arknights, in addition to many other subreddits you may use, will be going private (inaccessible) for a period of 2 days to protest the new changes to Reddit API pricing that directly threaten the existence of 3rd party Reddit apps. This will occur from June 12th to the 14th.

Our Plea

Reddit is a special place for many of us, and we understand that a company has to make money at the end of the day. However, we ask Reddit to consider a more sustainable pricing model for its API usage, one that would enable 3rd party apps to continue operating without charging their users exorbitant fees for usage.

TLDR

All 3rd Party Apps for browsing Reddit, such as Boost, Apollo, Relay, Reddit is Fun, Infinity, etc. will be effectively forced to shut down permanently following changes to fees for API by Reddit. We are closing this subreddit for 2 days in protest of these changes.
