2023.06.02 08:30 Global_Relative_3177 Chapitre 14: La Girouette

Bonne lecture.
— Arrête de trembler Miysis, tu me fais pitié.

2023.06.02 07:53 unreliabletags Mixing sound objects

With PAs moving beyond L/Sub to fancy "sound object"-based spatial systems (L-ISA, Soundscape, etc) controlling lots of smaller loudspeaker hangs, some mixing techniques don't quite transfer. Suppose I want to compress my vocals as a group. Easy enough in the old world. But in the new world, running the vocals through a group for compression purposes also consolidates them to a single sound object. I lose the ability to position them individually. Maybe I can run a pair of groups and pan between them, but I lose a lot of the PA's capability by summing things "prematurely" inside the console.
My question for anyone mixing on these systems in the big leagues: how have you adapted your technique? Any tips and tricks on how to accomplish old moves like this in new ways? What are you seeing in the modern high-end consoles to support this new world?
I can imagine something like a compressor but actuating through DCA moves instead of having an output, for example. Or a vocal bus acting as a sidechain input to individual compressors on each vocal channel. (In fact I think this works, but it's an ugly hack). Overall though it seems like ultimately we need new mixing constructs and some kind of convergence between the console & system processor to get the most out of these new PAs. I'm sure someone is working on that! Would love to hear about it.

Research Nester’s recent market research analysis on Liquid Nitrogen Market: Global Demand Analysis & Opportunity Outlook 2035” delivers a detailed competitors analysis and a detailed overview of the global Liquid Nitrogen market in terms of market segmentation by storage type, function technology, end user, and by region.
Growing Concern for the Safety in the Food and Beverage Industry is Expected to Drive the Growth of the Global Liquid Nitrogen Market
The rise of cryogenic freezing in the food and beverage business can be ascribed to the rising concern over food safety, which has caused this market to grow. The procedure takes less time, is environmentally friendly, and has no impact on the nutritional value or flavor of the food. Food items like meat, vegetables, fruits, and prepared meal items are frequently preserved using this method. But days, expensive restaurants increasingly use liquid nitrogen to create exquisite delicacies. This is also the main driver of the market for liquid nitrogen.

2023.06.02 06:14 zartes Convergence Manifesto - I've run most of it. I have notes

at the start of the year, I decided I wanted to run a campaign for some friends, and to save myself some effort, I thought I would run a pre-written game. I looked up Eberron adventures, and the convergence manifesto looked like it would suit the quick, very-slightly-casual-ish campaign I wished to run. While I haven't finished the campaign yet, I want to write out some thoughts about it.
WHAT FOLLOWS WILL SPOIL THE CONVERGENCE MANIFESTO CAMPAIGN. DON'T READ IF YOU INTEND TO PLAY IT.
ALSO, PARTS OF THIS MIGHT NOT MAKE SENSE IF YOU HAVEN'T READ OR RUN THE ADVENTURES BECAUSE I'M BAD AT EXPLAINING THINGS.
To start with, I'd like to say that some of my criticisms of the campaign are probably problems with me. I have focus issues, and I'm a picky perfectionist, and to be fair to all the writers involved, they have done better jobs than I would in their shoes.
A note on my group: our party consisted of a human wild magic sorcerer (ex-skycoach driver), human wizard (aundairian expatriot), a gargoyle barbarian (used the rules for a Hadozee), an eladrin eloquence bard, and a goblin rogue (retired Conquerer champion looking for something new to do)
The Campaign As a Whole:
The premise of the Convergence manifesto is that Nigel Faurious, Provost of Morgrave university, wants a bunch of relics that are each attuned to one of Eberron's planes. Each adventure is a mission to some location on Khorvaire to retrieve or create such an item.
Each of the adventures is written by a different author, and as a result I think they vary pretty wildly in quality.
Adventure 1: Fired and Forgotten.
Synopsis: PCs go through hazing ritual to join adventuring guild in Sharn, get sent to pick up bespoke Fernia-linked magic item from a forge in the Cogs, discover forge has been shuttered due to warforged workers protesting - they have to convince the owner to be less of an ass. Then Daask show up.
This one was good! A strong start. Everybody enjoyed the hazing ritual, and I decided to use the optional NPC with the aberrant dragonmark manifesting (for reasons I'll explain further down). The warforged union situation was a very good introduction to what is special and different about the Eberron setting. This might be an issue with me as GM, but I found that the PCs dealt with the non-combat parts of the adventure VERY easily through use of skills and illusions, never thought about leaving the immediate vicinity of the forge (and thus missed some content), and I felt kind of bad having the forge owner not immediately cooperate in the face of 20+ results on Persuasion and Intimidate.
The daask Ettin bruiser being toned down for a bunch of level 1s was a very nice touch, but throwing that at the players right after the fight with the mephits made that bit rough.
Adventure 2: Live Another Day
Synopsis: PCs get air-dropped into Droaam so they can find a hidden valley with an Irian manifest zone, so they can charge up a crystal. On the way they may encounter some ogres, have to navigate a hidden set of tunnels, and then on arriving discover a clan of harpies is living in the valley, as they are persona-non-grata in Droaam. When Droaam monsters follow the PCs into the valley, they have to fight them off before the harpies will let them complete their mission
So, slight issue with this one, probably unique to my party - the adventure calls for a lot of Survival rolls for the overland travel and nobody in my party had survival. They were a bunch of city-slickers. Seemed a little odd the adventuring guild picking the party to do this.
While the adventure was somewhat rail-roady, it at least makes sense in that the PCs are following in the footsteps of a prior explorer. My main issue was the last portion - once the PCs get to the valley, there will ALWAYS be Droaamite monsters on their heels. Firstly, this discounts the possibility that the party had been religiously using Pass Without Trace or doing other things to make them untrackable. My party didn't, but a party with a ranger and/or druid might have. Secondly, the fight as written is a bit boring. It's two Gnolls. Two gnolls shouldn't be a threat to a clan of harpies. Once the gnolls are dead, three goblins show up. After that, two half-ogres show up. You can optionally add some more scenes fighting gnolls and chasing anything trying to get away. I revamped the fight a bit by making all of these fight scenes one long drawn-out battle with reinforcements arriving, and I re-contextualized the Harpies wanting the PCs to fight the monsters without their help - the Harpies could probably run rings around the ground-based humanoids, but the Harpies both thought this was the PCs fault they were here, and didn't want to show themselves in case any stragglers got away to report on the Harpies' presence.
Weird thing my party did: when they encountered the ogres at the start of the adventure, the group came up with a plan to pretend to be fellow Droaamite monsters if they failed to sneak past - they then snuck past the ogres without any issue, and were disappointed that they couldn't use their disguises... so they used them when the encountered the harpies, not knowing the harpies were enemies of Droaam. This very nearly turned into a combat situation, but the bard managed to talk everybody down and explain why they had been lying.
Adventure 3: Rime or Reason
Synopsis: Nigel sends PCs to Icewhite island to get a Risia macguffin after another expedition failed to return. They have to contend with a blizzard, find a tower of ice in the middle, and defeat ice monsters, a puzzle/trap, the possibly backstabby survivors of the failed expedition, and then deal with the tower collapsing once they find the item.
Some parts of this one were good - my party really seemed to enjoy trying to find a solution to get through the blizzard despite their lack of survival skill proficiency. Two of the casters were constantly casting prestidigitation to keep the Constitution 8 rogue from succumbing to hypothermia, and even then it was a bit touch and go.
Now, I had some issues with the ice tower as presented. First, the adventure says it's an ancient dwarven ruin, dating back to when the dwarves came down from the Frostfell. Personally, that didn't make great sense to me - why would you willingly make a building in a risian manifest zone? The whole of Icewhite island is freezing cold, and the manifest zone is worse.
Second problem - there is door, with a puzzle. The puzzle is so easy that I worked out the answer the instant I looked at the handout at the back of the adventure, before even reading the description - there are four columns of symbols (a book, scroll, wand, potion - again, not terribly dwarf-y?), and each symbol rotates a certain number of octagonal faces from one row to the next, and you just have to make the last row match the pattern. If you mess it up, it will spring a trap that will potentially either tickle the PCs a little, or cause a TPK if they're messed up from any prior fights because anybody reduced to 0 HP by the trap is frozen solid until freed by greater restoration, which no PC at this level of adventure will have.
Third problem - the tower is only four storeys tall. As described, it more cube-shaped than tower shaped. Also, as described, a PC with misty step standing on the shoulders of another PC of above average height could potentially teleport to the top of the tower and avoid 50% of the adventure content.
Fourth problem - the top of the tower is described as a garden made of icy plants... which doesn't make sense with Risia's canonical loathing of life.
my fixes: I changed the backstory of the tower, rather than being a dwarven relic, it was an Aundairian Magical Congress research facility, set up during the war to try to draw weaponizable power out of the Risian manifest zone - a wizard tower felt more right than a dwarven one. I then changed the solution to the puzzle - the symbols still had to be rotated, but what columns they were in had to be swapped, to represent the Congress sharing magical knowledge. I had the other expedition that was there explain they had tried the obvious solution and it hadn't worked. I also made the tower taller, mostly as an aesthetic thing, and so that the stand-on-shoulders-and-teleport trick only got the party Eladrin up to a balcony, rather than the roof. I kept the set-piece of the tower collapsing, saying that the magic the Aundairians had been trying had kept the manifest zone coterminous and removing the macguffin broke the spell holding the ice tower together.
Adventure 4: Living Legend
Synopsis: the party goes to Darguun, hunting a legendary hobgoblin hero. They get to see the fact that bugbears take slaves, follow a guide to a Thelanis manifest zone, and undertake several trials to prove they are worthy of claiming the hero's weapon to bring back.
So... the premise is cool. The execution is anything but
Even setting aside the fact that some parties might get entirely side-tracked by fighting slavers, the issue I had was that the trials in the adventure didn't seem to really key into the fact that Eberron goblinoids are supposed to have some different and interesting cultural mores.
The trials aren't bad, per se, but they don't feel goblin-y at all.
Worst of all, though, there is a Hobgoblin you encounter during the trials who is one of the Dhakaani fallout-vault people who is set on passing the trials to claim the weapon herself. As written, she is quite easy to befriend, will readily tell the PCs that she is from a hidden vault of survivors of the goblinoid empire, and if they DO befriend her, doesn't leave the room she's in despite the fact she's here for the same cultural relic the PCs are. WHICH FEELS INSANE. Every bit of canon and kanon lore I've encountered about the Dhakaani suggest that they distrust non-Dhankaani at best, and outright loath them at worst, and are trying to keep their presence secret. She should be either fighting to the death or keeping her origin secret then betraying the PCs, or not here at all.
Between the un-goblin-ish trials, and the insanely cooperative yet unhelpful NPC, this one needed the most fixing to satisfy my tastes. As I didn't have the time and brain juice to do that before the session, I decided to skip this adventure, and have the PCs collect a Thelanis macguffin as part of the later adventurer where they go to a Feyspire (adventure 12: Lost in Dreams).
Adventure 5: Perfect Timing
Synopsis: PCs get on a lighting rail intending to jump off it as it goes over a bridge, so they can appear in Daanvi to acquire the macguffin. twist: there's emerald claw terrorists on the train, and one of them has stolen the thing the PCs need to get into Daanvi, intending to go himself. Once in Daanvi, it's a race against the Emerald Claw guy to fill out all the paperwork to get the macguffin first
So, over-all, this one is really good. The premise is good. Situation is hilarious. It's very Eberron
Minor issues: the train has SO MANY COMBAT ENCOUNTERS. the PCs start at one end, and have to fight their way to the other, with one fight in every single train car, one of which is purely due to a misunderstanding. It took two sessions to get through the train half of the adventure, and that is with me having skipped two of the fights. In hindsight, I would have maybe also varied the stats of the enemies a bit more.
Also, while I comprehend the drama of having the thief jump out of train with his accomplices during a fight, this presumes the PCs don't kill every single one of his accomplices. I had to pull some shady DM shenanigans to get the guy out of the train in one piece, and give him new allies to help in the final battle at the end of the paperwork race.
My players enjoyed this one a heap, but one did comment that he thought it should have come later in the campaign, as it was such a departure from the others.
Adventure 6: Night's Gambit
Synopsis: PCs have to infiltrate Fort Bones in Karrnath and steal a mabaran macguffin from under the nose of the military there.
Another really good one, although not without it's issues. The adventure presents interesting characters in the form of the fort's up-tight commander and relatively chill head necromancer, a timeline of what they will be up to at various times of day, and has options of all kinds of approaches: sneaking in, joining up with what is basically the Karrnathi Foreign Legion, or acting as bodyguards for a visiting inspector. I loved that it gave all these options.
my only complaints were that the timeline was a little hard to make sense of as presented, and the map of the fort seemed... a bit too small and simple for the facility as it's described. I feel like you'd expect one of Karrnath's most important border forts to be at least a two-storey building (I fixed that by describing the fort's upper levels as being still under construction after the last time it was sacked).
How my party handled it: so, my group aren't terribly sneaky on the whole. They also do not look like adventurers - to glance at, they are a Gargoyle, the hottest and floweryest elf you've ever seen, a depressed cab driver, the least magical aundairan wizard ever, and a goblin grandmother. So they couldn't really sneak in, wouldn't blend in as recruits, and I felt wouldn't really be the kind of people the inspector would hire as bodyguards....
...so they decided to BE the inspector. Eladrin lady was the inspector herself, gargoyle got dressed up as weird undead bodyguard, aundairian wizard was silent note-keeper, grandmother was a servant, and cabbie became the coach-driver. The group arrived a day early ("surprise inspection"), and were given a tour of the fortress. They executed everything perfectly. In the end, the only fight they had was an ambush on the necromancer in his own bedroom at 3am, wherein they beat him senseless, put him to sleep with a spell, and healed him back to full HP, so when he woke up in the morning he had no physical proof that anything had happened and was questioning his own sanity. They even fashioned a replica of the macguffin (it's a conqueror piece - the goblin rogue had her own set, which the wizard imbued with some necromantic energy), so the alarm wasn't raised for several hours after the PCs had left the fort.
Adventure 7: The Silvered Edge of Twilight
Synopsis: PCs go to Thaliost to pick up a Lammanian macguffin from a silver flame priest - when they get there, it's been stolen. They do some investigating, track the theives to the railway station, and chase them down to the Eldeen reaches where they fight Ashbound druids and lycanthropes.
Kind of middling adventure - nice premise, but very railroady. For starters, there's an NPC (who I edited out) who gets sent with the PCs for all of the investigation portion who basically seems to exist to keep them on track and/or provide lore about Thaliost and also to force them into a fight they might otherwise be able to avoid. Even outside of that, the investigation seemed a bit being-led-by-the-nose, although maybe that came down to how I was running it.
The issue, for my run at least, was once they were on the train. As written, the PCs need to track down the missing item on the train - it's written with there being a few red herrings as to who might be the thief, but it's a magic item. I have never seen a group of PCs who didn't have access to detect magic, so my PCs just bypassed all the red herrings with a single spell.
Next, there is supposed to be a set-piece fight where the were-tiger with the item jumps off the train, and leaves here were-rat minions to fight the PCs. I can't really criticise the adventure writer for not forseeing what my PCs did: the eladrin bard walked scootched up to the were-tiger, went "hey, I gather you're a nature-themed terrorist? I am too! I hate civilization. Can I tag along and then borrow your item when you're done with it? Also are you single?" and then rolled a 27 for persuasion.
The PCs came along and jumped the lycanthropes a day later. To be fair, the adventure never explained how the were-tiger was supposed to get to the final battle before the PCs as she jumped off a moving train and is slower than it is.
Adventure 8: The March of Madness
Synopsis: PCs go to an ancient dungeon in the Shadow Marches, go on a vision quest before being allowed inside by the druid guardian, and then have to contend with/repair the wards inside the dungeon before they can get their Xoriat macguffin. Depending on how it plays out, they may or may not end up accidentally killing an ancient orcish guardian inside the dungeon, and may or may not be betrayed by an insane warlock.
The adventure is very solid, great even. The map that comes with it is... very uninspiring, so I re-mapped the dungeon and added a bit of extra flavour to one room (there's a weird trap that doesn't make much sense, so I made it a weird manigest zone effect rather than a deliberate thing), but that is basically the only changes I made. 4.5 stars!
Adventure 9: Weathering the Storm
Synopsis: PCs get sent to the Lazaar principalities to receive a Kythri macguffin that is being imported. Ship doesn't arrive, investigation leads to sky pirates, which in turn leads to an attack on a skyship.
So, again, really nice premise. Some issues with the execution, though - see, the synopsis in the adventure itself makes reference to the Chaos Fleet, a concept introduced in 4th edition, where there was a pirate fleet in the principalities that were basically Davy Jones' crew from Pirates of the Carribean, if they went all elemental-y rather than all fish-y.
Except, the Chaos Fleet never actually show up in the adventure at any point. All the opposition in the adventure is Wind Whisperer pirates. ALL of it. Literally, it's only the one statblock for everybody except the final boss.
my fixes: when the PCs are inspecting the wreck of the vessel that had their macguffin on it, rather than Wind Whisperers returning to the scene of the crime, I had a Chaos fleet ship turn up chasing the scent of the macguffin that they were lusting after - I used weirds from the Ravnica book, and some mephits. After that, I fed the PCs info of sightings of Chaos Fleet ships chasing after a skyship in the heart of a storm - the Chaos guys I described as not usually a threat because they're terminally incapable of cooperating with each other, but this was concerning because the Wind Whisperers seemed to be trying to use the macguffin to draw all of them into their wake and then force them into Regalport.
In the adventure as written, then PCs are airdropped onto the macguffin-holding skyship with some friendly Regalport sailors to help them (and to keep the fight against the Wind Whisperers manageable). I gave the wind whisperers some more variance in statblocks (scounts, thugs, deck wizards from ghosts of saltmarsh), and had the ship under attack by elementals at the same time, rather than give the PCs allies.
I also had the aberrant dragonmarked NPC from adventure 1 show up in Regalport, saying she had been given a grant by Nigel to continue her studies somewhere other than Sharn.
Adventure 10: At Death's Door
Synopsis: PCs sneak into the upper level of the Lair of the Keeper to get a Dolurrh macguffin while the (alleged) Keeper is out having a meeting with some minions. It's a dungeon crawl.
This is the best one. Almost every encounter can be fought or talked through (with varying difficulty). The Rakshasa is great. The demon and the bodak are great. The Orcs are great. I loved it. No fixes. No notes. 5/5 stars.
Further Adventures:
This is as far as we've gotten at time of writing. I'm currently gearing up to run A Heart in Mourning, and am running into some of the same issues as Rime or Reason - the adventure site feels too small, the approach to it a bit too rail-roady due to being a tower, combined with the fact it doesn't really feel like it's Shavarath-ish enough. Also, ending with a collapsing tower seems repetitive at this point.
I need to read Lost in Dreams in more detail. It looks complex, so I'll report back on that one.
As for the last adventure - a read-through revealed some really neat set-piece fights and the stupidest twist I've ever \***ing heard of*. As written, the adventure reveals that Nigel Faurious has secretly been... a gnome woman from zilargo who the PCs have never heard of and who wants revenge on Sharn for her sons dying in the War.
...What???
I at least have a fix for that: Nigel Faurious is... actually Nigel Faurious. Nothing secret going on there. He came to Morgrave university in his 20s in hopes of studying to help his fiancé - the fiancé had an aberrant dragonmark that meant they would create spontaneous manifest zones temporarily. One day they had a bad flare-up, and got killed by a mob, just like the NPC nearly is in adventure 1. After that Nigel as spent the last 20 years trying to reverse-engineer the manifest-zone creation effect with the intention of destroying the city that killed the love of his life.
------
Thanks for reading all this way, I know this has been a really long post. I appreciate the effort.

Tried to make Alexandra Udinov from Nikita (2010). Also started a new RP featuring totally different characters
The first picture is a comparison between my (somewhat inaccurate) imitation of Alexandra Udinov's outfit from "Coup De Grace", an episode from Season 1 of Nikita. The rest are just random screenshots of the new adventures of former Bodark officer Nikolai Kalinin (Who defected to America sometime between the events of Ghost Recon: Wildlands and Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, before ending up with the Outcasts during the events of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint). Also this is supposed to be part of an entirely different roleplay in which a totally different group of people ends up on Auroa during the events of Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
Here's a breakdown of the characters for this one: 1. Nikolai Kalinin: Bodark deserter who is convinced Raven's Rock is going to destroy Russia. 2. Dominic "Nomad" Rubio: Ghost lead for Operation Greenstone 3. Ernie Stone: Trey Stone's nephew, hates his uncle Trey due to the latter having gone mad with power. 4. Seymour Stone: Ernie's brother, Trey Stone's nephew, sees his Uncle Trey as a victim of Cole Walker's bad influence (Apparently he thinks Trey Stone went bad due to Walker brainwashing him about Wonderland). 5. Alexandra Rozhdestvenski: Raven's Rock deserter who believes Raven's Rock and Bodark are a disgrace to Russia, defected to America sometime before the events of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. 6. "Black Viking": A Wolf deserter who has become disillusioned about Wonderland and seeks to tear it down (details to be determined). 7. "Venus": A Wolf deserter who became disillusioned about Wonderland and seeks to destroy it. 8. "Prophet": Former CIA operative who sees Walker as a disgrace to the US after his defection from the Ghosts and creation of the Wolves, frequently compares Cole Walker and his Wolves to Adolf Hitler and the Nazis due to alleged similarities between Wonderland and Hitler's idea of the "Aryan race". 9. Dante Miles: Close friend of the Stone brothers and the son of CIA deputy director Peter Miles. Not sure what role he'll play in this RP yet. 10. Holt: Ghost Recon operator who is taken out of commission due to serious injuries sustained during the drone swarm attack. 11. Midas: Ghost Recon operator captured by Sentinel as part of Project CLAW. 12. Weaver: Ghost Recon sniper killed by Cole Walker. 13. Ruby Mackenzie: A DedSec hacker who joined DedSec out of spite and in direct defiance against Project CLAW (Yup, I am expanding her role considerably here).

2023.06.02 04:33 autotldr Afghanistan Accepted Into China’s Belt and Road Initiative

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 75%. (I'm a bot)
China and Pakistan have agreed to extend the Belt and Road Initiative into Afghanistan, potentially drawing in billions of dollars to fund infrastructure projects in the sanctions-hit country, according to Pakistan's Foreign Ministry.
Pakistan's foreign ministry stated that "The two sides agreed to continue their humanitarian and economic assistance for the Afghan people and enhance development cooperation in Afghanistan, including through extension of CPEC to Afghanistan." It said Chinese and Pakistani officials have previously discussed extending the project to Afghanistan and that the cash-strapped Taliban government has expressed readiness to participate in the project and the prospect of receiving much needed infrastructure investment.
Following the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in 2021, Washington froze the overseas assets, including gold and foreign reserves of the Afghanistan Central Bank and placed the country under sanctions.
Chinese businesses have been wary of investing in Afghanistan due to attacks by the Islamic State group which is competing with the Taliban for influence.
Muttaqi's second visit to Pakistan comes days after the United Nations stressed the need to engage with the Taliban rulers as Afghanistan is facing the "Largest" humanitarian crisis in the world.
China has been considering Afghanistan's involvement in the BRI since 2017, when an Afghan delegation attended the second International Belt & Road Forum in Beijing.

2023.06.02 01:00 autotldr Why Is the Fed Seeking Advice From the Architect of Past Financial Meltdowns? — Fed Chair Jerome Powell has been looking to disaster-prone ex-Treasury head Larry Summers for insight, emails reveal.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 89%. (I'm a bot)
The FOMC's use of the adjective "Transitory" to describe price growth throughout 2021 was seized upon by critics to accuse Fed Chair Jerome Powell of lacking the will to increase interest rates because he lacked the stomach to deal with unemployment spikes that typically follow such hikes - which some say he should lack, given that Congress gave the Fed a dual mandate, keeping a lid on both inflation and unemployment.
The writings are also noteworthy because Powell personally received the text of the published articles from Summers via email, according to records of the Fed chair's emails from 2021 released to the author under the Freedom of Information Act.
The Fed denied that the records indicate any special reverence for Summers on Powell's behalf.
The Fed had previously forecast an increase in the federal funds rate of only 0.75 percentage points over the next year, a magnitude dismissed by Summers as inadequate in the December 2021 column that found its way to the Fed chair's inbox.
In addition to their joint stint at the Fed under Trump, Powell and Summers have worked together at the Treasury Department during the George H.W. Bush administration, and at two separate private sector ventures: the Carlyle Group, a high profile well-connected private equity firm, and the corporate Manhattan-based law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell.
In October 2021, before he and Powell began to see eye-to-eye, Summers said: "We have a generation of central bankers who are defining themselves by their wokeness," echoing criticism of the Fed made by Republican lawmakers upset with the agency's consideration of social issues when formulating economic policy, and its refusal to cast aside its employment mandate in pursuit of price stability.

2023.06.02 00:27 Edge-The-Fiend How We Would Book Ilja Dragunov's Main Roster Run (P.U.R.E: The RISE's Part 2)

In the following weeks after SummerSlam, Imperium now comes out with Ilja Dragunov wearing their same colors, hands behind his back and all. August 7, 2023 is the first day since May 17, 2021 that Imperium has four members. Despite Ilja's stoic expression when with the group, it was clear to the WWE Universe that he felt somewhat out of place. But this is Gunther's plan all along: have Dragunov join Imperium so he can find himself again. On Raw, Imperium showcase their incredible wrestling prowess, and Gunther, Ludwig Kaiser, and Giovanni Vinci know how to do it well. Using grappling techniques, athleticism, strength, and power, Imperium are already a talented front and formidable force. Adding Ilja Dragunov to the team brings in unpredictability to elevate them. Or so it should.
Ever since almost dying in the ring at NXT Battleground against Dijak, Ilja played it safer to prove to his son that violence isn't always the answer. While he remains amazing inside the ring, his ferocious and untamed style of competition seems to have faded since May 28. He's still a championship worthy wrestler in WWE, but he's just not that wildcard killer that people love and know him by anymore. While this is happening, Johnny Gargano has also been climbing the ranks of the Raw roster. So much so that he earns the opportunity to face Gunther for the IC Title at Extreme Rules.

Extreme Rules (Gunther (c) vs. Johnny Gargano for the Intercontinental Championship)

At Extreme Rules, Gunther defends his Intercontinental Championship against Gargano, who also has a family. During the match, Gunther delivers around 24 chops to Gargano's chest, rendering him almost unable to breathe. The referee calls a stoppage to the match due to Gargano being unable to continue. While all four members of Imperium put their hands behind their backs, Ilja shows major concern toward Johnny's condition, turning his head to the officals and Gargano. He tries checking on him, which leads to Imperium attacking Johnny Gargano out of spite to Ilja. Gunther pulls Dragunov to the side and says "We're doing this for you. You need to find yourself again and quit this paranoia garbage. You're a part of Imperium, godammit act like it!" They pick Johnny up and Gunther orders Ilja to hit the Torpedo Moscow, but Dragunov refuses. Disappointed, Gunther hits Gargano with another chop and The Last Symphony to end their beatdown. Ilja knows that what his group is doing is wrong, because Johnny Gargano has a wife and a son, too. But there's nothing he can do to stop it without violence, which he doesn't want to be a bad example for his family.
In the weeks following Extreme Rules, Imperium continue their dominating ways. They even attack their opponents after the match to add insult to injury. All except for Ilja Dragunov. He only competes in the matches, and once he's done, he leaves, doing the Imperium pose. Gunther is trying to toughen Ilja up again by ordering him to join in on their fun, but Dragunov refuses every time.
He actually does something one night on Raw when Gunther defeats Kofi Kingston (who hopefully is better by this point). When Imperium does their usual beatdown on Kofi, Xavier Woods tries to help him out, only to get laid out by Gunther. Xavier Woods rushes to his aid, hoping to intervene. His efforts are then met with a devastating blow from Gunther, leaving Woods damn-near incapacitated. Giovanni Vinci and Ludwig Kaiser hoist Kofi Kingston up by his arms, and Gunther demands that Dragunov finally executes the Torpedo Moscow, disregarding Dragunov's repeating refusals. Dragunov once again refuses, but Gunther chops him straight on his chest, yelling at him to do it to the family man with three children! Ilja finally does, knocking Kingston out with tears in his eyes! At that moment, Ilja Dragunov felt like he was a terrible example for his son, succumbing to Der Ring General's pressure and using violence, just like Imperium wanted.

Survivor Series (Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn (c) vs. Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship), (Gunther (c) vs. Xavier Woods for the Intercontinental Championship)

At Survivor Series, Gunther defends his Intercontinental Championship against Xavier Woods, while Kaiser and Vinci have a shot at the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. During the tag team match, when the referee is distracted by Ludwig Kaiser, Sami Zayn has Giovanni Vinci in target for the Helluva Kick. As he's running, however, he gets stopped by a huge unexpected Torpedo Moscow by Ilja Dragunov! Giovanni Vinci pins Sami Zayn to win the Tag Titles for Imperium! Ludwig and Giovanni actually win the titles with the reluctant help from Ilja Dragunov.
Later on, Gunther uses his powerhouse fury to retain his Intercontinental Championship against the high-flying determination of Xavier Woods alone in a modern day David vs. Goliath classic, where Woods tried to rely on his agility, resilience, and determination for Kofi's vengeance to challenge Gunther's usual dominance. While just doing the Torpedo Moscow seemed tame to last year's Dragunov's standards, it slowly showed a bit of the wildcard coming back. Gunther's plan is working, and there's new gold in the group now! Ilja, on the other hand, knows that he has two targets on his back in the forms of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens.

A recent study by Sweden’s Chalmers University of Technology found that the current global production levels of raw materials will not match the demand of the European Union’s EV industry, not even when accounting for recycling.
The paper points out that the metals that are highly sought after, such as dysprosium, neodymium, manganese and niobium, are of great economic importance to the EU, while their supply is limited and it takes time to scale up raw material production.
“The EU is heavily dependent on imports of these metals because extraction is concentrated in a few countries such as China, South Africa and Brazil. The lack of availability is both an economic and an environmental problem for the EU, and risks delaying the transition to electric cars and environmentally sustainable technologies,” Maria Ljunggren, lead author of the study, said in a media statement.
“In addition, since many of these metals are scarce, we also risk making access to them difficult for future generations if we are unable to use what is already in circulation.”
Together with the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, EMPA, Ljunggren has surveyed the metals that are currently in use in Europe’s vehicle fleet. The assignment has resulted in an extensive database that shows the presence over time of 11 metals in new vehicles, vehicles in use and vehicles that are recycled.
The survey, which goes back as far as 2006, shows that the proportion of critical metals has increased significantly in vehicles, a development the researchers believe will continue. Several rare earth elements are among the metals that have increased the most.
“Neodymium and dysprosium usage has increased by around 400% and 1,700% respectively in new cars over the period, and this is even before electrification had taken off,” Ljunggren said. “Gold and silver, which are not listed as critical metals but have great economic value, have increased by around 80%.”
According to the researcher, the idea behind the survey and the database is to provide decision-makers, companies and organizations with an evidence base to support a more sustainable use of the EU’s critical metals. A major challenge is that these materials, which are found in very small concentrations in each car, are economically difficult to recycle.
“If recycling is to increase, cars need to be designed to enable these metals to be recovered, while incentives and flexible processes for more recycling need to be put in place. But that’s not the current reality”, Ljunggren noted.
“It is important to increase recycling. At the same time, it is clear that an increase in recycling alone cannot meet requirements in the foreseeable future, just because the need for critical metals in new cars is increasing so much. Therefore there needs to be a greater focus on how we can substitute other materials for these metals. But in the short term, it will be necessary to increase extraction in mines if electrification is not to be held back.”

June 1, 2023~Volkswagen plans EV battery revolution at new gigafactory~

Volkswagen plans EV battery revolution at new gigafactory – The Irish Times

On the flat plains of Lower Saxony, near the town of Salzgitter, a new empire is growing out of the land. Well, specifically out of the mud right now, as it’s been raining for the past couple of days and, like all building sites, it doesn’t take long for the muddy puddles to form.
Once the mud is clear and replaced by concrete and steel, this 260,000sq m site will be the home of Volkswagen’s first battery “gigafactory”, which has become something of a buzzword of late, applied to any production site that just happens to be large.
This is, or at least in due course will be, a factory for making gigas. Gigawatts of power, packaged in batteries destined for Volkswagen’s fleet of new electric cars, and indeed any customers for such parts that it finds along the line.
Speaking of parts, the design and management of the factory is actually under the auspices of Volkswagen Components, the part of the car-making giant that also packs up and sends out the spare parts for your 10-year old Golf. Components is a far bigger business than it sounds, though – it’s worth some €40 billion to Volkswagen, so the €2 billion investment needed in Salzgitter to make the battery factory is getting on for small change. Even so, a whole separate division within VW Components, called Power Co, has been set up so that it can act like a start-up, and make the sort of rapid decisions and fast-developing business plans needed so that VW can keep up in the battery power race.
It’s part of a €30 billion investment in battery technology, research, and construction over the next seven years to deliver a target of 80 per cent of Volkswagen’s sales, worldwide, being made up of electric cars by 2030. In Ireland and the rest of Europe, that figure is more like 100 per cent, although with the recent lobbying to water down the proposed EU ban on combustion engines, that may change in the interim.
Eventually the plan is to increase production to 40gWh per year, enough batteries for 500,000 electric cars
Salzgitter has been part of the VW empire for some time now. The factory on the site started in 1970, making the somewhat unloved K70 hatchback and saloon, a precursor to the first-generation Passat. By 1975, Salzgitter had been refitted to make petrol engines, and it’s been doing that ever since.
Now, the plant that made engines is turning over to making batteries instead. There’s already a pilot production plant on the site, a section of the factory that once made cylinder heads and which is now making experimental batteries for the next-generation of electric cars and vans.
The gigafactory that’s currently rising, to an eventual height of 60m, out of the Saxon mud will have a capacity of 10-gigawatt/hours (gWh) for each of its two large production halls. Eventually the plan is to increase production to 40gWh per year, enough batteries for 500,000 electric cars. That’s just a small part of what VW needs to build all those new EVs though – the company estimates that it needs some 240hWh of battery production by 2028, so Salzgitter will be joined by further Gigafactories in Valencia, in Sweden and in Ontario. MAY 31, 2023~New 'designer' titanium alloys made using 3D printing~

New ‘designer’ titanium alloys made using 3D printing - RMIT University

The breakthrough, published in the journal Nature, could help extend the applications of titanium alloys, improve sustainability and drive innovative alloy design.
Their discovery holds promise for a new class of more sustainable high-performance titanium alloys for applications in aerospace, biomedical, chemical engineering, space and energy technologies.
RMIT University and the University of Sydney led the innovation, in collaboration with Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the company Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence in Melbourne.
Lead researcher, Ma Qian a professor from RMIT, said the team embedded circular economy thinking in their design, creating great promise for producing their new titanium alloys from industrial waste and low-grade materials.
"Reusing waste and low-quality materials has the potential to add economic value and reduce the high carbon footprint of the titanium industry," said Qian from RMIT's Center for Additive Manufacturing in the School of Engineering.

What type of titanium alloys has the team made?

The team's titanium alloys consist of a mixture of two forms of titanium crystals, called alpha-titanium phase and beta-titanium phase, each corresponding to a specific arrangement of atoms.
This class of alloys has been the backbone of the titanium industry. Since 1954, these alloys have been produced primarily by adding aluminum and vanadium to titanium.
The research team investigated the use of oxygen and iron—two of the most powerful stabilizers and strengtheners of alpha- and beta-titanium phases—which are abundant and inexpensive.
Two challenges have hindered the development of strong and ductile alpha-beta titanium-oxygen-iron alloys through the conventional manufacturing processes, Qian said.
"One challenge is that oxygen—described colloquially as 'the kryptonite to titanium'—can make titanium brittle, and the other is that adding iron could lead to serious defects in the form of large patches of beta-titanium."
The team used Laser Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED), a 3D printing process suitable for making large, complex parts, to print their alloys from metal powder.
"A key enabler for us was the combination of our alloy design concepts with 3D-printing process design, which has identified a range of alloys that are strong, ductile and easy to print," Qian said.
The attractive properties of these new alloys that can rival those of commercial alloys are attributed to their microstructure, the team says.
"This research delivers a new titanium alloy system capable of a wide and tunable range of mechanical properties, high manufacturability, enormous potential for emissions reduction and insights for materials design in kindred systems," said co-lead researcher University of Sydney Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Ringer.
"The critical enabler is the unique distribution of oxygen and iron atoms within and between the alpha-titanium and beta-titanium phases.
"We've engineered a nanoscale gradient of oxygen in the alpha-titanium phase, featuring high-oxygen segments that are strong, and low-oxygen segments that are ductile allowing us to exert control over the local atomic bonding and so mitigate the potential for embrittlement."

Support for this research

The team’s work benefited from sustained, targeted investment in research infrastructure from national and state governments and from universities, Professor Ringer said.
“In many ways, this work showcases the power of Australia's national collaborative research infrastructure strategy and sets the scene for extending this strategy into the realm of advanced manufacturing,” he said
The Australia Research Council (ARC) through the Discovery Program and the Training Centre in Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM) funded and supported this research.
The team acknowledges support from the Australia–US Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative program supported by the Australian Government; The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; the State Key Laboratories in Hong Kong from the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Government; and Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence for its Simufact DED solution used in the L-DED process design.
The team’s research paper, ‘Strong and ductile titanium-oxygen-iron alloys by additive manufacturing’, is published in Nature (DOI: 10.1038/s41586-023-05952-6).
An editorial on the team’s work, ‘Designer titanium alloys created using 3D printing’, is also published in Nature (DOI: 10.1038/d41586-023-01360-y). * We adopted the term ‘designer titanium’ in this media release from this editorial article in Nature

MAY 26, 2023~ NioCorp Demonstrates the Ability to Potentially Double Projected Titanium Recovery Rates for the Elk Creek Project~

NioCorp Demonstrates the Ability to Potentially Double Projected Titanium Recovery Rates for the Elk Creek Project - NioCorp Developments Ltd.
Demonstration Plant Shows New Recovery Process May Double NioCorp’s Titanium Production per Tonne of Ore as well as Produce a Higher Purity Product that May Command Higher Market Prices
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (May 26, 2023) – NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:NB) (TSX:NB) is pleased to announce that it has successfully demonstrated an ability to potentially double the recovery of titanium from each tonne of ore the Company expects to mine at its Nebraska-based Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Project”), once project financing is obtained and the commercial plant is constructed. The new process is expected to produce a purer form of titanium that may command a higher price than is assumed in NioCorp’s June 2022 feasibility study for the Project (the “Feasibility Study”).
NioCorp’s demonstration plant in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, has shown that the Company’s new and improved recovery process can likely achieve an 83.7% rate of overall titanium recovery to final product. This compares to a 40.3% titanium recovery rate in NioCorp’s previous process approach. This new result points to a potentially large increase in the amount of titanium that NioCorp can potentially produce at currently planned rates of mining.
NioCorp’s current Feasibility Study shows the Project producing approximately 431,793 tonnes of titanium dioxide. The titanium produced by NioCorp’s new process is in the form of titanium tetrachloride (“TiCl4”), known in commercial markets as “tickle.” This is a purer form of titanium than the synthetic rutile, and generally commands a higher market price. TiCl4 is an input for the production of high-purity titanium oxides and compounds, which are used primarily in the manufacture of white pigments, and titanium metal and aerospace-grade titanium alloys.

Final determination of planned titanium production can be made only after work related to a mineral reserve update, additional engineering, updated project capital and operating cost estimates, and other required information is produced for publication in a new feasibility study.
Growing Demand for Titanium Metal and Alloys in the U.S. and the West
Demand and pricing for titanium metal and associated alloys has increased in recent years, and the U.S. is more than 95% dependent upon foreign nations (Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Japan, and Russia) for titanium metal and alloys, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. While Russia is only the third largest titanium mineral producer in the world, it is the world’s largest supplier of aerospace-grade titanium, producing half of the world’s titanium used in aerospace before 2022. Virtually all U.S. Air Force planes rely on aerospace-grade titanium; for example, the F-22 is constructed using approximately 42% titanium by weight.

More Streamlined Production Process Demonstrated
NioCorp’s new process has been demonstrated to be more efficient than the previous design, is expected to require fewer processing steps, and may allow the elimination of entire processes in NioCorp’s planned processing plant in Nebraska, such as acid regeneration.
“In demonstrating our ability to potentially make higher-purity titanium in multiple forms, and in potentially higher volumes, we open up a range of new and exciting possibilities for the business, including potentially emerging as a key supplier of titanium to several industries of importance to U.S. national defense and commercial markets,” said Mark A. Smith, CEO and Executive Chairman of NioCorp. “The increasing value of potential titanium production in the Elk Creek Project is a direct result of our new processing design and the careful testing of that system at the demonstration plant level. This is one of the reasons why we have focused so intently on getting this process right and demonstrating its technical feasibility.”
“A lot of work has gone into testing and validating this new processing approach, and while we are seeing the results that we expected, it is very gratifying to have those results validated at the demonstration plant level,” said Scott Honan, Chief Operating Officer of NioCorp. “For the U.S. and many Western nations, supply chain risk for titanium has become an increasing concern for both industry and defense markets. We look forward to NioCorp helping to contribute to a more reliable and domestic titanium supply chain from our potential production in Nebraska.”
