I’ve beaten the bosses in the ruins and the library. I’ve also done the “in the sky” part on the very west of map where you get to choose between two treasures that can help you in the scary woods.
The crow (raven?) by the big sword still says I need to go to the cliffs in the west to get stronger. What area is bird boy referring to?

So, I sent an initial batch of queries and received my first reply (a rejection), not sure if it was a form rejection, but basically, the agent gave a polite no and said that my query needed to be more clear on plot points and obstacles and character(s) attempts to reach them.

After mulling for a day, I rewrote my query (not sure if it's allowed to post the two queries here at the same time for comparison under one post?), but I'd really appreciate feedback on this updated version. I’m seeking representation for my 86,000-word adult gothic mystery, AND SOMETHING WICKED CAME THIS WAY, which unfolds from a dual point of view against the backdrop of contemporary Los Angeles. It may appeal to readers who enjoyed the creeping atmosphere and exploration of grief and love found in OUR WIVES UNDER THE SEA, as well as the sprinkle of paranormal elements and romance reminiscent of THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT by Simone St. James.

After a night of social games goes horribly wrong, Helen’s best friend ends up dead in an abandoned warehouse. Cause of death? Inconclusive. The participants of the game build a wall of silence surrounding the murky circumstances, urging Helen to just drop it. So, she decides to ask the dead girl what happened. But when Helen raises Gabriella’s ghost, she refuses to talk, and it’s a living and breathing boy Zack who shows up at the same warehouse — the artist Gabriella posed for before her death. To find answers, Helen must face her crippling social anxiety, and risk tearing apart her remaining friendships the game tested to their breaking point.
Zack hustled shitty jobs and tackled homelessness for years before making it in art. Running into Helen brings back a promise he made to Gabriella: find her friend and give her Gabriella’s journal, she deserves to know the truth about what Gabriella did to win a game the two were playing. But Zack is afraid the contents might also bring back the past that haunts him, wrecking a career he worked hard for, and landing him in serious legal trouble. And worse yet, he might have to admit he is not who he claims to be, to the curious girl he’s almost unnaturally drawn to.

I live in Finland by the Baltic Sea with my husband and our little dog. When I’m not working at a paint shop for a car factory, I’m elbows deep into writing my second novel, and maybe starting a few WIPs with more wickedness. I was born here in Finland but lived in the US for a while, and I'd say the dark and moody forests of New England (and of course, Finland) and the lush streets of Los Angeles have had a long-lasting impact on my writing as most of my stories involve one or the other.

The first 300 words (a prologue):

An industrial warehouse jutted out of the horizon, its jagged silhouette dimming an iridescent sky and drowning out the last rays of dying light. I hurried towards the abandoned building as its shadows cascaded down onto the streets, clutching a heart-shaped locket in the palm of my hand and a clamshell phone in the other. A gust of wind rustled the silver sequins of my dress, tugging on the hem as if whispering to hurry — I was so close now to discovering the truth about Gabriella’s death. I checked the time: 8:45 pm. The raps of my heels echoed throughout the night as I picked up my pace, reaching a lone door tucked away in a side alley.
Street lamps winked on and off as if little pock-bellied moons suspended in the air by an invisible string, confused whether the show was about to start or end. The yellow, blinking lights gleamed off the dirty windows of the concrete complex. I held up my phone and snapped a picture of the reflected image. Stage makeup morphed my features into that of a dead thing, a dead girl: two black holes for eyes, overdrawn white lips with a crooked smile, and frayed hair gathered in double buns like empty nests of a bird. A corsage of fabric orchids crawled around my neck; a noose tightening. The silver dress shone like a lure in the water. A blazing white flare obscured the photo as if I had become the Moon itself — a blind spot hiding the real picture underneath.
I cradled the locket until its imprint was etched on my skin, feeling the grooves and scratches of the soft metal. My thumb settled into a dent in the center of the good luck charm.

He made a promise to her before she skipped town abruptly: find ‘the siren’ and give her Gabriella’s journal — she deserves to know why Gabriella did what she did to win a game the two were playing. Helen fits the description, but Zack is afraid Gabriella may have written about his painful past, and handing the journal to the wrong person might land him in serious trouble jeopardizing his career.

In TWOIAF, we found out that Septon Barth wrote a book on how Valyria acquired it's dragons

In Septon Barth’s Dragons, Wyrms, and Wyverns , he speculated that the bloodmages of Valyria used wyvern stock to create dragons. Though the bloodmages were alleged to have experimented mightily with their unnatural arts, this claim is considered far-fetched by most maesters, among them Maester Vanyon’s Against the Unnatural contains certain proofs of dragons having existed in Westeros even in the earliest of days, before Valyria rose to be a power.

In his book, Barth makes the bold claim that Old Valyria made their dragons from bloodmagic. I do believe his claim to be the truth. Why?

Most of what Septon Barth claims, turns out to be the truth.

Septon Barth made another bold claim that the Children of the Forest taught the men of the Night's Watch how to speak through ravens, that using ravens as a means to transport letters is a degraded form.
This claim turns out to be the truth, despite the Maesters disagreeing with this notion.

"Do all the birds have singers in them?" "All," Lord Brynden said. "It was the singers who taught the First Men to send messages by raven … but in those days, the birds would speak the words. The trees remember, but men forget, and so now they write the messages on parchment and tie them round the feet of birds who have never shared their skin." A Dance with Dragons, Bran III.

He also claims that the seasons are a result of the higher mysteries and magic rather than natural causes, a notion that is again scoffed at by the Citadel. A notion that our author GRRM has confirmed to be the truth.

It’s not another planet. It’s Earth. But it’s not our Earth. If you wanted to do a science fiction approach, you could call it an alternate world, but that sounds too science fictional. Tolkien really pioneered that with Middle Earth. He put in some vague things about tying it to our past, but that doesn’t really hold up. I have people constantly writing me with science fiction theories about the seasons — “It’s a double star system with a black dwarf and that would explain–” It’s fantasy, man, it’s magic.

By looking at those two examples, it's reasonable then to establish Barth as a reliable source of information.

Blood magic seems to be capable of doing what Barth claims.

According to TWOIAF, blood magic is capable of breeding two distinct creatures to create an entirely different one.

In the dungeons of Gogossos, torturers devised new torments. In the flesh pits, blood sorcery of the darkest sort was practiced, as beasts were mated to slave women to bring forth twisted half-human children.

Whatever Aerea encountered during her flight to Old Valyria seems to be a result of blood magic.

“The things…Mother have mercy, I do not know how to speak of them… they were…worms with faces…snakes with hands…twisting, slimy, unspeakable things that seemed to writhe and pulse and squirm as they came bursting from her flesh. Some were no bigger than my little finger, but one at least was as long as my arm…oh, Warrior protect me, the sounds they made…

Dragons do resemble wyverns and firewyrms

After the Battle of Rook's Rest, Sunfyre is too injured to take flight and instead remained at the Rook's Rest. During this time, it's likened to wyrm by those that witness it crawling throughout the place.

The king’s dragon, Sunfyre, too huge and heavy to be moved, and unable to fly with his injured wing, remained in the fields beyond Rook’s Rest, crawling through the ashes like some great golden wyrm.

When Daenerys takes Quentyn to see her chained dragons, she wonders whether her dragons can dig tunnels similar to firewyrms. They could, to a certain degree.

He's made himself a cave, the prince realized. A burrow in the brick. The foundations of the Great Pyramid of Meereen were massive and thick to support the weight of the huge structure overhead; even the interior walls were three times thicker than any castle's curtain walls. But Viserion had dug himself a hole in them with flame and claw, a hole big enough to sleep in.
A Dance with Dragons - The Dragontamer

The strongest evidence of all, we find in Fire & Blood. Laena Targaryen, the daughter of Baela and Alyn, has an egg that hatches a creature that is for all intents and purposes, a wyrm.

“Her parents' pride and pleasure quickly turned to ash, however; the dragon that wriggled from the egg was a monstrosity, a wingless wyrm, maggot-white and blind. Within moments of hatching, the creature turned upon the babe in her cradle and tore a bloody chunk from her arm. As Laena shrieked, Lord Oakenfist ripped the "dragon" off her, flung it to the floor, and hacked it to pieces.” Fire & Blood

When you look at all these points, the most logical conclusion one can come to, is that yes. Targaryen dragons, or dragons from Old Valyria are a result of sorcerery and magic done by the Valyrians.

The fact that the majority of the people trying to support Trans Gwen with evidence are half-assing it, pointing to the colors of the costume, the Protect Trans Kids flag in the room, and the subtext of the secret identity scene as all they need.
And as such, no one on the other end is having to argue with the evidence I find more convincing - physical details in her design like her shoulders, chest, and brow. While I have also heard the points about her being able to fit in Hobie's shoes, and a line about how she used to play with action figures... it wasn't from anyone making the viral tweets. And while those in isolation aren't definitive, it at least comes across as more substantial evidence to use.
(I was around the "trans colors for the costume, are they trans??" block with RWBY Volume 7, so I have been skeptical of that argument being used in isolation.)
I did find myself wondering "why not give her an Adam's Apple at that rate, Miles clearly has one," but then I learned tracheal shaving is A Thing That Exists. So I suppose the absence doesn't necessarily sink the argument??
I do find the Reichles Morales memes funny to a point, that allusion of colors and "they've all had to hide a secret about their identity from most of the world out of fear of violence and social ostracism, that's us (trans folks)" is all you need to make a conclusion. I don't appreciate how I was led to believe that actually WAS all there was evidence-wise, given how it was all that was talked about, but that's on me for not seeing the film yet.
(Part of me finds it funny how the community is willing to spoiler everything about HWL, but when it comes to defending a trans reading from a film they like they can't be asked to point to all the evidence, spoilers be damned.)
My final cap to this is... This is the major talking point about the film? Really? What is or is not in a girl's pants, not shit like "what purpose does 'canon' serve in the context of a multiverse" or "is Miles right to 'defy canon' or not?"

Yasmin Raiz and Roti Ann Raiz arrive, in Yasmin’s grandparents’ wedding attire- Yasmin wears her grandmother’s wedding dress, an deep V-neck tea-length pearlescent 60s gown with a soft blue veil and train, while Clem wears the smart matching blue suit and pearl tie, both adorned everywhere with soft pearl flowers and wearing trademark chunky glasses. Yasmin throws her bouquet at the end of the runway with a wink.

King Omari Star and Darweshi King Star strut out of the stage in two grand royal looks. Omari has a beaded necklace and headpiece made of feathers, with a fitted beaded corset and long flowy skirt. Darweshi wears a more bird-like look, with a long flowy cape and a breadth of jewels placed around their body as they walk, hand in hand.

Aguacate and Pitaya arrive in matching fruit looks! Aguacate is the star of the show, dressed as a literal camp take on an avocado with a matching sombrero, as she shimmies and twirls through the stage. Pitaya is dressed as what else, but a Pitaya! She walks slightly behind Aguacate, wearing a matching sombrero as Aguacate points to her as they walk, making a zany facial expression as they strut hand in hand.
“I live for a treat.” Lucy smirks.
Fiore Stravaganza and Francesca Stravaganza are the picture of elegance and beauty as they strut out, both fitted for the gods in a tight set of mermaid gowns. Fiore is in a gorgeous white dress, with Francesca in black, each with an opposing set of gloves. Their hair is long and flowy, both expressively painted with dark features as they eye the judges.

Granny Gorgeous and Grandson Gorgeous are the picture of a strange family. Granny is wearing a big fitted coat, with grandson serving a pantsuit look in the same color. Granny has gorgeous long gray hair, with Grandson wearing a matching black ponytail, as Granny fussily plays with Grandson’s hair as he hits the end of the stage.
Floss raises an eyebrow.
Jaslene Bangus and Jezebel Bangus enter the stage as PHOENXIES! In a huge feathered bodysuit, the two look like literal twins as they strut out on the stage. Jaslene hits the floor, landing a split as Jezebel cartwheels forward, picking up Jaslene on her shoulders as the two move through the stage, delivering a delicious show.

“Granny, you’re like- megalodon levels of inspiring.” Yasmin grins. “To see a Queer Woman on this stage- you have had a second life, and wow, it feels great to know no age is stoppable for this.”
“I wanna be like you when I grow up.” Zazu smiles.
Granny looks touched, as she places her hand on her chest. “Thank you, you have no idea what it means to me to hear you all say that. I thought- I thought you’d all think I was some joke. And to feel this love….” Granny’s eyes well up with tears.
Fiore Stravaganza: “No love for me? No matter.”
Fiore swirls her drink.
“I am disappointed. I expected to do well this week, but apparently the judges don’t see that.” Fiore says. “I will be safe, but that’s not enough.”
“...Who are you talking to?” Jaslene looks at Fiore.
“...The circle?” Fiore makes a face. “It seems like everyone has had room to talk but me.”
The others eye Fiore.
Yasmin Raiz: “Fiore seems a bit… do I say, like… delusional?”
“Whatever.” Fiore continues to drink. “I don’t understand why everyone is looking at me like I’M the fool with some of those clown faces you put on every week, but...” Fiore mutters.
“What was that?” Yasmin asks.
“Nothing darling, you look great by the way. Your partner’s mug reminded me of our runway theme two weeks ago, it honestly looked fantastic.” Fiore compliments, with a grin on her face.
“Thank you…” Yasmin says, before realizing what was really said.
“I just-” Yasmin smiles, wiping her eyes. “It feels fantastic to be here. This week was lovely. It gave me a drive- and I’m here, racing for this journey till the end.”
Yasmin Raiz: “I am aware- I am not a crazy personality. I’ve been consistent, I’ve been delivering- and that is my advantage. I don’t need to tell you how I’m going to take the crown- I’ve been showing you.”
“Damn right.” Omari grins. “Shall we raise a glass to us?”
“Let’s do it!” Yasmin smiles.
“Aguacate, come!” Granny yells.
“I won’t stop myself from another drink…” Fiore smirks.

Aguacate: “I am an island.” Aguacate closes her eyes and hums. “For me, this competition is priority. I will fight for it. And I will not be going home.”
