Secateur review and PSA
This is somewhat of a public service announcement for new gardeners who might not know about the options out there for garden shears/pruners (fancy gardeners call them secateurs). For years i had used whatever the local home depot had on their shelves. The main brand they carry near me is fiskar. I’m not sure where i bought the flexrake brand. The quality of both fiskar and flexrake is poor (flexrake is VERY poor quality) and i was always frustrated having to buy a new one every year or two knowing i was spending money on junk. Then about a year ago i discovered the felco brand. The felco 2 specifically. Game changing. I absolutely don’t work for felco or have any financial conflicts of interest whatsoever, i just made this post out of appreciation for a product that is so good. The Felco 2 is amazing. it increases my enjoyment of gardening immensely. Its an example of something that is well thought out, well designed and does its job exactly as its supposed to. They cut better, stay sharper, don’t get the blade and bypass surface misaligned and are more comfortable. After a year they function much better than a fiskar pruner does brand new. In an age of planned obsolescence and decreasing quality, it drives me crazy spending my hard earned money on things that end up breaking or degrading soon after. Its very satisfying to find something that seems basically “buy it for life” and so vastly superior to the competition i was used to seeing. And Felco sells all replacement parts so you never have to chuck the whole thing and start over, you can buy a new blade or spring or whatever and easily repair it yourself. Felcos are expensive (70ish$), but i have no doubt in the end i will save money by not needing to replace them and over that time span will have a much better experience doing something i enjoy. I made this post after reflecting on how great the Felco 2’s held up over a year and wishing someone had told me about them sooner. Hopefully they will make someone else as happy with their performance as they did to me. Cheers and happy gardening!

2023.06.09 18:56 ateto Seeking buying advice after 4500 km on Xiaomi.

I've been riding a Xiaomi scooter since the end of 2019, and it still runs pretty much the same way, except for the range, which decreases and it seems that the steep hills are becoming a problem. I'm ready for an upgrade, and there are a few key factors I'm interested in:
  1. Hill climbing capability
  2. Overall durability
  3. Weight (I have two back hernias, so anything above 25-30kg is too much for me)
  4. Casual off-road performance for fishing trips
  5. Availability of spare parts
For reference, I weigh around 85-90kg (187-198lbs) and stand at 180cm (5'11") tall.
On my Xiaomi, I've had 5 flat tires, and I replaced the rear tire with a solid one. I've had 4 flats on the front tire, so I really want solid tires both in the front and back. This is why I'm only considering scooters with front and back suspension.
Additionally, I own a small Nissan Juke, and the scooter should be able to fit inside for vacations and trips.
I'm providing the prices of the scooters just for comparison purposes, as it may help people weigh the benefits of a more expensive option that offers better features or a less expensive option with a better price-to-product ratio.
The local dealers have the following models in stock:
Please note that these prices are subject to change, and it's important to compare the features, specifications, and overall value of each scooter before making a decision.
There are also some other brands I'm unfamiliar with or unsure if they would meet my requirements. I prefer purchasing from a local shop due to the lengthy delivery time and high taxes associated with orders from outside the EU. Additionally, the country is at the point of putting some limits, but politicians haven't decided yet. I probably have around a month before they consider some restrictions on everything that's being sold.
I recently spoke to the guys at my local mechanic shop that I've been using for my Xaiomi. They are authorized and experienced in working with VSett scooters. They informed me that they can provide repairs and support for VSett scooters as part of the warranty service, which gives me additional peace of mind.
I've already ridden my Xiaomi scooter for 4500 km, and I've been satisfied with its performance thus far. However, I'm looking for an upgrade that can better meet my extended needs.
I would appreciate any suggestions or guidance to narrow down my options. Thank you!

2023.06.09 17:10 Mortennif Here are changes I would make for every killer

Trapper - Any survivor tampering with bear traps suffers from Exposed, Oblivious, Hindered by 50%, Blindness, Exhausted, Broken and has their aura revaled. All of this for 600 seconds
Wraith - Wraith can now smack survivors from beneath his cloak
Hillbilly - When chainsaw overheats it explodes killing everyone in the trial
Nurse - She starts taking pain blocking medicine and no longer goes into fatigue after blinking
Huntress - Hatchets have mini propellers installed that guide them towards the survivors
Doctor - Survivors in madness 1, 2 or 3 see ilusionary palletes, windows, lit hex totems, generators, chests, doctors and other survivors. They remain there until action associated with them is completed, after which they disapear
Hag - wiping away the traps triggers them (to wipe them you need to touch them)
Shape - Adds Evil Within 4. While in it the Shape can grab and murder any survivor and he has 150% haste
Cannibal - going near a hook while using your chainsaw will refill all tokens
Nightmare - While in the dream world unmutable baby shark song plays at all times.
Pig - Jigsaw boxes are rigged and none of them contain the key
Clown - Yellow bottles now smell like piss
Spirit - it is possible to disattach body parts to split up and search for survivors.
Legion - There is now 4 of them
Plague - untreated infection might cause the survivor to die
Ghost Face - Marking a survivor reveals their search history to all other survivors
Demo - Survivors can be grabbed into upside down, a place with 0 palettes or windows
Oni - You can pull out the club while not it blood fury
Deathslinger - Instead of the redeemer you use an AK-47
Pyramind Head - While suffering from torment survivors get visions of their cringiest memories
Blight - New serum formula allows the blight to fly
Twins - Victor is now a grow up adult that hunts survivors by himself
Trickster - blades can go through walls
Nemesis - any stars members suffer from exposed and can be moried for the duration of the trial
Pinhead - solving the box requires the player to solve an unsloved before integral.
Artist - Any crows on the map start swarming survivors
Sadako - TV's now spawn in every trials. Watching them causes sadako to spawn and having 2 killers in one trial (or 5 in legions case)
Dredge - Going near a survivor for 3 seconds will consume them and add them to the dredge
Wesker - after 7 minutes everyone is sacrificed
Knight - All 3 guards will find a gen each and kick it whenever possible
Skull Merchant - She gets replaced by the Predator
Singularity - 3D printers' nozzles randomly jam, requring the survivors to spend 2 hours trying to unjam them
I do believe these would be great changes for each of the killers. Let me know what you think

2023.06.09 17:08 DogNamedCharlie Anyone just go all in to EGO?

I own a house with a .29 Acres and about 9000ft^2 mowable lawn with one burm in the back and a little bumpy terrian from frost heave. I just replaced my gas trimmer a couple years ago and my SP Toro is about 5-6 years old. The toro's height adjustment for the front wheel broke off the deck, though it still iss attached to the afront axel. Though this gives the front wheels a toe out position, which makes it more challenging to mow.
I currently see the $699 deal for the LM2156SP and another Combo Deal $229 for a string trimer + blower. The only thing EGO I bought was a refurb hedge trimmer kit I j ust ordered from ACME Tools. I have yet to play with it, though thinking of just ditching all my gas stuff and going full in on EGO. Anyone else do this and is satisified with similar lawn size/conditions?
We are going to keep our gas snow blower for now as it is only a couple years old and I have only used it a few times. I just don't want to worry about changing oil on the mower, my current mower takes up a lot of space in the garage, less noise, and we don't like the gas smell.

2023.06.09 16:18 Fabulous-Letter-5649 Engineer retires, and is replaced with a Human (Pt 6)

Pt 1 If you haven't read it yet.

Pt 2 If you haven't read it yet.

Pt 3 If you haven't read it yet.

Pt 4 If you haven't read it yet.

Pt 5 If you haven't read it yet.

The sun had begun to set, so I made my way over to the metro station we agreed upon as the rendezvous point. The walk took me about 20 minutes so by the time I got back the streetlights were beginning to switch on as the last red rays of starlight dipped below the horizon. It was there I anxiously awaited for Tromō, expecting him to take longer. I stayed for about a half hour, but at that point my stomach had slowly begun to sink with dread. My mind raced. In an attempt to dismiss these fears I reached for my communicator to check his location (I know, I know, risky in a public location but I had made my way over to a much quieter location.) I found him en route to the warehouse district, about 20 kilometers north-northeast of my location. Something had gone terribly wrong. Sensing the worst I quickly commandeered a nearby truck, hot-wired it, and hauled ass back to the hotel. I was never particularly any good at combat so
a different strategy would be required. I also had many moral qualms at the thought of murder, but since Tromō would likely have his identity compromised, protocol states clearly that anyone who comes in contact with that knowledge must be promptly terminated, and the blind rage made quick work eliminating that psychological barrier.
On the drive back to the hotel I began to plot his rescue. My mind, overcome with anger, jumped to a most unorthodox manner of dealing death. The plan I had settled on was to deploy a gas, engineered to only affect Ix. The gas would serve as the medium for the transmission of a specially designed virus to act as a genetic trojan horse to gain access to their cells, and disable their DNA from being read. None of their immune systems could cope with such a virus, allowing it to wreak havoc on their bodies unimpeded. Now, I did design the virus to prevent itself from spreading to new hosts and would only last a few milliseconds while outside the gas.
Getting back to the hotel room I sequenced the Ix's genome so I could tailor the virus. How it would work is a CRISPR protein would be released once access had been gained to the cell, this would identify active strings of genetic code, and replace them with deactivated strands, which the body wouldn't read for. Repeat this 100 or so trillion more times and you have a rather unpleasant appointment with the grim reaper in just 48 hours. The gas, however, would paralyze them, preventing any movement while the virus made its way through the body.
I worked for the next 4 hours, as quickly as I could, making sure to inform Bridge about what had happened to Tomō, but only mentioned that I was "Handling it." when it came to finding a solution. Captain didn't follow up as there was a general understanding that you don't talk about what you had to do on a rescue mission. At regular intervals I checked his location and vitals making sure that not only was he not moving, but also still remained alive.
Leaving the hotel I got back in the truck and went as fast as I could to the warehouse they were keeping him in. Rage and fear boiling over. What were they doing to Tomō? Is he hurt? I'm gonna kill those fuckers. They fucked with the wrong person and now they're gonna be in a world of hurt unlike anything they could possibly imagine.
Slamming on the brakes when I got there, I took in my surroundings. The building was small, no larger than a barn, with a slanted roof with two skylights. Surrounding the building was a tall fence, nothing I couldn't climb and the entrance was padlocked shut, both the gate and the door. After scaling the fence I climbed up a dumpster and up onto the roof, making sure to crawl whenever I could. Peeking through the skylight, which was cracked open slightly, allowing me to not only see but hear what was going on inside.
It was a most distressing scene, Tomō, tied to an iron column, all bruised and bloodied, with four other people, 2 men and 2 women, standing nearby. I was lucky to have calibrated the dose for 5 people.
"It's been 5 hours, your little friend isn't coming to save you." One of the men said approaching Tomō
Fearing that he could hurt him once more I readied the bow with the special arrow that would release the gas on impact.
The arrow landed right in-between the man and the three others. They all turned to look at me, but I had quickly hidden myself from view.
"Looks like your friend is here after all. Shame he missed!" He shouted.
"I didn't need to!" I shouted back, clicked the button that would release the gas along with the virus.
I crawled back over to the skylight to see my creation take action. They began to cough. One of them fell down.
"You don't know, do you?" He said, laughing and still coughing.
"We knew where you were. That tracker is on you too. Oh, and that little bioweapon you designed, it doesn't work on us."
He pulled off a sort of latex disguise. He was not Ix, none of them were. They were all Trexel, the sworn enemy of The Federation who they had been fighting with, largely in the form of border skirmishes and territorial disputes for the last 200 years.
"Get him." The man said, pointing at me as the three others began running out of the building.
I quickly climbed down the roof and only had time to get onto the top of the dumpster, I was unarmed, or so I thought, remembering the pair of scissors I kept in one of my pockets. I did ditch my bow and at this point it was dead weight to me.
"You're gonna fucking pay for what you did to Tomō." I growled.
"With a pair of scissors! HA!" one of the women said.
"You fucked around..."
Splitting the scissors in two, I grabbed one of the halves and threw it.
"ACK" Was her last word as the blade pierced right through her neck.
THUMP was the noise her body made collapsing onto the floor as she bled out and choked. Her peers readied their swords. (Kinetic weapons would make too much noise and Energy weapons could have some... unintended consequences.) I grabbed a short, half-meter pipe and taped the remaining half of the scissors to one end.
"with a human.. and now... you find out."
I jumped down from my position, while that did mean sacrificing my high ground, I needed to make the quickest work of the two in order to get to Tomō as quickly as possible.
They both charged me at the same time, trying to flank, but I just circled around, making sure to keep line of sight.
Eventually one charged me, I let her attack me, always making sure to move out of the way, this kept the both of them in motion, never quite getting close enough to strike.
Leading them in circles I eventually picked the man who didn't seem as skilled due to his lack of participation compared to his other colleague.
Lunging towards him I made quick steps towards, when I got inside striking range he I had to sidestep his sword, but in the end that didn't matter, a swift stab to the chin and I just pushed him aside with the other end of the pipe to bled out.
Now all that was left was the woman standing there, alone, and moderately terrified.
Adrenaline coursing through my veins in ever increasing quantities, and desperation coursing through hers, we charged at each other, and I stabbed her in the torso, striking one of her vital organs.
But I was but a 10th of a second too late, and the steel of her blade sliced about 2 and a half centimeters into my right shoulder. Adrenaline quieted the pain, but it still hurt like hell as the blood trickled out and I began to lose feeling in my right arm.
Pulling my communicator I hit the SOS button.
Pushing her body to the side I ran as fast I could to the door and charged the last man toppling him to the ground. But he was prepared, holding a knife in his hand, stabbing and slashing until his last breath. When all was done I ran over to Tomō but collapsed just centimeters from freeing him as the amount of blood I lost grew, and the pain returned.
I waited for 2 minutes, but it felt like eternity, barely being able to open my eyes, and the pain shooting throughout my body, all while I could hear Tomō struggling to break free to try and treat my wounds.
But at the end of those two minutes I was lifted up into a medevac shuttle.
"Tomō?" I groaned, forcing the word out with every fiber of my being.
"Yes we have Tomō he'll be okay but our priority is you right now."
I recognized the voice, it was Jiply, the ship's doctor, but I could barely parse it out through the noise of other doctors and whirring, beeping machines as the crew of doctors attended to my injuries.
By the next time I had opened my eyes I was lying down in a cold room by myself, dressed in my underwear and a knee-length hospital gown, hooked up to a heart rate monitor and a pack of blood to replenish what I had lost. Nearby though was a call button, which I sat up slowly to reach, upon sitting up I inspected myself, noticing that my torso had 5 scars from the fight, and I estimated another 2 on my back judging by the tenderness of the skin. I pressed the button repeatedly until someone came.
"Well I see you're awake!" Smiled Jiply.
"Would you like me to tell the crew you're awake?"
"Just Tomō for now, I'll tell the crew myself" I said, groggily.
"Oh and could you get me something to wear please?"
"Sure thing I can get you something!"
She left the room and shortly afterwards brought me a pair of pants, the same color as my gown and made of flannel. Since I couldn't get out of bed quite yet she put them on for me.
"Thank you." I whispered.
Jiply left once more to get Tromō, I didn't have to wait long until I heard him bursting through the door.
"You're okay!" He exclaimed while crying.
"Oh thank the stars you're okay!"
He bolted towards me, tightly wrapping his arms around me.
"Too much squeeze, too much squeeze!"
Not only was he hugging me too tightly, but it also irritated my tender scars. He quickly loosened his hug, allowing me to feel his soft, wrinkly skin, and hear the pitter-patter of his hearts.
"So good to see you're okay too."
We were both crying tears of joy, and while I knew whatever just happened would only be the start, I would always have someone I could rely on. Tomō would always have my back, and I would always have his. I fell asleep mid-embrace.
When I woke up once more, it was already the next day, and while the bag of blood had been removed, its place was a clear IV bag to, you know, prevent me from starving.
I just laid down, facing the ceiling, taking in the calm. Savoring it. For about... 5 minutes, after that I got bored, so I pressed the call button. To no-one's surprise by this point, Jiply walks in shortly afterwards. I strongly suspect that she was personally overseeing me as it likely got priority over Klob'lar freaking out over stubbing their toe again.
"Is there anything I can help you with?" She asked
"Could you get me a cane, I would like to tell the crew that I'm okay."
She handed me a cane, carefully lifting myself back onto my shaking legs.
"So what's the damage doc?"
"Well, your liver got punctured but we were able to repair that, and we had concerns about the long term viability of your L-3 vertebrae and your right shoulder so we replaced the both of them."
"Not too bad." I chuckled.
I slowly made my way over to the door one hand clasped around the cane, and the other around the IV bag stand. It took me about half an hour to head down the hallway over to the bridge. The door opened and I belted out as hard as I could
"IMM BAACK!" *Cough* *Cough*
Everyone stood up to face me and began to clap, which I signaled for them to stop since I didn't care for the noise. I was smiling though
"We figured you were okay, Tomō seemed happier than ever before so we assumed it meant good news for you!" The captain said walking over to me.
"Awww man he spoiled the surprise!" I laughed.
"Oh please, seeing you walking is plenty surprise enough."
"So how did you manage to rescue me so quickly without being discovered?"
"Oh we didn't, we unfortunately had to prematurely inform them of other life in the galaxy."
"You're fucking with me aren't you."
"After how you fought, we all respect you too much to fuck with you like that."
"Well shit." I said, the smile I had was wiped from my face.

So that's it for Pt 6, hope you liked the fight scene! Pt 7 should be coming out in another 2 days. As always, thanks for reading!

2023.06.09 16:17 ho_merjpimpson Mower runs strong for 20-40 minutes and then dies. What to check next

John deer lt180. Kawasaki Fh500v engine, carbureted. I run nothing but ethanol free fuel through it.
What it does: starts up strong, mows well, idles well, choke needed when expected. Runs great for about 20-60 minutes and then starts cutting out. Seems like its running out of fuel? But maybe not? I don't want to suggest that and influece your thoughts. All I know is if I ignore it, the machine suddenly dies, and I have to wait a while to start it again, at which point I have slightly less time to mow... 10-30 minutes before it happens again. If I hear it happening, and immediately disenguage the blades and idle it down, I can sometimes nurse it through the issue. The engine will surge and eventually stop surging and I can mow on for another 10-30 minutes or so.
what I've done: new fuel pump, filter and some fuel lines. Disassembled and cleaned carb. Topped off fuel
what I'm thinking I'll do next: ignition coils(2), blow out fuel lines from the filter back into the tank. Then siphon out the tank.
I've had issues before where when a machine gets hot it cuts off ignition because of the bad coils... But in my experience that is usually sudden. But an easy $30 attempt.
I've also heard that mowers have a pickup screen/mesh in the tank and that as they run you can slowly suck up debris as you mow until the fuel line is clogged.
Any other thoughts on what I can try? The issue is that this machine lives at my camp, 4 hours away, and every time I go up I try something new and thus far it hasn't fixed it. Hoping to have as many things to try as possible when I go up next so I can try and get it squared away and not make a 2 hour mow take 6 hours.

Circle of life
Rip to my latest Corona orange tip. Broke it almost exactly a year to the day I got it. Also pictured was my favorite trenching shovel ever. Three handle replacements and the blade is just too thin for a fourth. Far left is my latest addition. When I break it I’ll be carrying it back to Lowe’s to try out their lifetime warranty.

2023.06.09 13:52 jdbobs A pirate themed adventure

So me and a few buddies are starting a new game in a few weeks and since we're all big anime fans our DM is making it one piece themed. We're a pirate crew searching for some lost treasure.
So obviously all our characters are one piece themed. Our party consists of zoro (me), sanji, brook & chopper.
I only know the basics of the other builds, sanji is a monk, brook a bard and chopper a reflavoured druid (with his points replacing wild shape)
My zoro is a dual wielding (will get a third when I get fighter 5 and rework extra attack into attacking with my hand held weapon and bonus action attack with the sword in my mouth) fighter 2/hexblade warlock 1. Fighter is obvious and taking hexblade to represent his cursed kotetsu blade and I can rework the warlocks spells and abilities to fit. - getting serious during a fight and putting my bandana on - casting hexblades curse - reacting fast enough to block an attack with my sword - the shield spell - attacking from a distance with my pound ho - eldritch blast dealing slashing damage instead of force.
Now the question is where do I go from here. What fighter subclass works best for zoro. My first thought was samurai but it kind of clashes with my fighting style.
So any suggestions. Ideally im looking for something that can be shaped to fit the abilities zoro uses in the manga
Also just for fun what classes would the other straw hats be? - Luffy - some kind of monk maybe? - nami - rogue/tempest cleric? - usopp - rogue/rangeartificer? - robin - astral self monk - Franky - artificer Jinbe - another monk?

2023.06.09 12:29 ferretkona Case warranty, work done right.

I had my favorite Trapper develop a crack in the bone near a rivet. It was a 2004 rattlesnake pattern on the bone with Damascus blades. I contacted Case during covid and had to file an online claim submitting pictures. It took a few months, I got a phone call that the rattlesnake bone was no longer available, they offered to use available bone and I accepted.
I received the knife in the mail. At first, I was upset. The knife was not anything similar to what it was. I started looking at it again a few days later. The tang stamp dated it ten years newer, they had simply replaced it instead of repair. Then I noticed the Damascus blades were the newer "rain drop" pattern. The knife, once I looked at it again, was drop dead gorgeous.
The killer move that Case made. I had left a note with the claim, if the bone scales were removed if they would be returned. A few weeks later my wife was breaking down the box it came in for trash. She found wrapped in the box was the original bone scales.

I am not a fan of stainless blades. That said, their knifes using better steels have good quality control.

2023.06.09 12:02 cheesecakenl Respeccing after the Rogue Twisted Blades cool down nerf/bug?

In patch '1.0.2d Build #42131' they nerfed the Twisted Blades Cool Down Reduction. It destroys the TB build since you are waiting too long for skills to get off cooldown. You have to hit like 1000.000 enemies on the Twisted Blade return to get maybe a maximum of 2 second CDR.
I am currently level 66 and invested about 70 hours into the build. I run T15-T20 NM dungeons.
Attack: 5103 Armor: 5119 Life: 2688
I am considering respeccing into 'Penetrating Shot'. This means respeccing skill points, paragon points and getting and replacing Aspects.
Anyone else biting the bullet and respeccing? It will take a lot of gold and materials to respec points and replace aspects. Maybe better to level up a new Rogue?
Builds and tiers
What Rogue builds are you guys playing? What is your char level and what tier NM dungeons are you clearing?
EDIT: Added some extra questions for discussion.

2023.06.09 11:38 Drakolf Dragon Rising- 25. Devotion:

The first thing I noticed, when I walked up to the Temple, was how large it was.
As I approached, the Paladins stepped in my way. "The High Priest is not allowing visitors." They said. "We can't let you in."
"Is that so?" I asked. "I'm sorry, I wasn't aware the High Priest of Bahamut had authority over the Imperator." They didn't move. "Kneel." I said. "I am Ruuk Stingtail, returned from the dead by the efforts of Bahamut and Asgorath, so when I say 'kneel', understand it is either that, or execution. Kneel."
They didn't move. "Tallyn."
Tallyn drew his sword, which elicited a clear reaction from them. Almost immediately, they knelt.
"Leniency, or wrath?" I asked.
'Which is more just?' Bahamut asked.
"In honor of Bahamut, I grant you leniency." I spoke. "Now, if you know of the one who beat Kova for speaking out against the Temple, you will tell me now. According to Bahamut's tenets, we grant honor and correction to the enemies of good, and pursue justice and good above all else. There are several people who are in desperate need of a correction."
"I-I'm sorry, Imperator." One of the Paladins was trembling. "We don't know who did it."
"Unfortunate." I said. "I am dismissing you from your post, pray I do not dismiss you from anything else."
I walked into the Temple, it was ostentatious, beautifully decorated with gleaming gemstones, gold, and silver.
"Tallyn, have the prior two temples been like this?" I asked.
"No, Imperator." He said.
"Do you know why?"
He was silent for a moment. "We didn't really have the materials for it, I guess."
"Is that so?" I asked. "Draw your sword, Tallyn, we stand in enemy territory."
He drew his sword as we walked down the long hall leading to an ornate throne, upon which a Dragonborn sat.
"I thought I said I wasn't going to see you." Mitne stated with a tone of threat in his voice.
"Since you refused to come to me, I spared us the trouble of wasting time." I replied. "Usurper, why have you deigned to rule my Empire, using my brother as a puppet, no less?"
"How dare you accuse the holiest of Bahamut's servants?" He hissed, his voice dripping with malice.
"Then why do you force the people to wear his holy vestments?" I asked.
"Your failure last year was due to a lack of faith." He stated. "You chose a weak God to rally behind, I am ensuring our people have his protection."
"If you ensure their protection, why did one of your order beat Kova, who simply spoke criticism of the Temple?" I pressed.
"The Empire has no use for those who cannot obey a holy order." He stated.
"Then why is this Temple so richly decorated, when Bahamut's temples are to be filled with simple, yet comfortable furniture, with no unnecessary embellishment?" I asked. "Yes, I paid attention to Galax's preaching, I observed how he build Bahamut's Temples."
"Bahamut deserves far more than such a humble Temple." He answered.
"Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, opals, and jet." I noted. "These are the gemstones you've adorned the walls with." I looked at him. "Like your mistress, you are not subtle. Was it the destruction she wrought that inspired such faith, or are you merely capitulating, hoping she will simply leave you alone?"
"How dare you accuse me of such treachery!" He roared. He stood up, hand raised, and a spell flung. Ephemeral wings wrapped around me, taking the blow and protecting me. His eyes widened and his spell tapered off.
"Mitne ux irral kitril munthrek." Bahamut spoke through me, my eye aching under the pressure of Bahamut's rage. "First Dragonborn of this world. I am severely disappointed in you. To twist my teachings, to make a mockery of all that I stand for, to drive the people further and further away from worship... If there is even one bone of contrition within your body, you will kneel and renounce Tiamat before me. Else, I shall sentence you to death."
The fear in Mitne's eyes was replaced with cold malice. "That trickery will not serve you, Stingtail." He stated. "My faithful will not capitulate to the actions of a tyrant."
"Then it is death." Bahamut spoke.
Mitne raised his hand, and Tallyn ran forward. "Bahamut!" He roared. "If I act in error, make it known!" His sword began to glow and he swung at Mitne. "In your name, I smite this wicked foe!"
As the blade connected, there was an explosion of bright light, followed by Mitne collapsing to his knees, gasping for breath. "My Vow remains intact." Tallyn stated. He stabbed down, but an explosion of darkness flung us back.
Mitne glared at me with hatred as he was pulled through into the darkness, which faded away like smoke caught in a breeze.
I stood up and approached where Mitne had once sat. On the floor was a holy symbol to Bahamut,
The platinum was, impossibly, tarnished and corroded.
"Tear down this place." I said. "If there is to be a temple, it will be built properly." I said. "Tallyn, I am putting you in charge of the Temple's affairs."
I could understand why Bahamut wanted me back, any longer, there would have been a bloody revolution, the people's backs turned to Bahamut, they would turn to something else.
We had everyone strip down naked, and armed with only a holy symbol, they were required to prove they still had Bahamut's favor. Most of them did.
"Mitne said, if we were truly just and righteous, we would earn Bahamut's favor." One of the false Paladins said. "We trusted him."
Zones of Truth were cast, questions were asked, and eventually, Kova's attacker was found. I made him beg on hands and knees for her mercy, I gave her a club and used my new healing powers to keep him alive until she worked out her anger.
'This is technically an abuse of my gift.' Bahamut pointed out.
"Then take it back." I said. "I didn't ask to be your agent, I'm only doing what you need me to do because it aligns with my goals."
'As long as justice is served, and my faithful returned to the right track, I will abide your less scrupulous methods.'
"Does it upset you, that I am dead set on returning Kurtulmak to life, even if it's an impossible goal?"
'I would be more upset if you immediately devoted your life to me without a second thought.' He remarked. 'Honor and loyalty are good qualities to have.'
I stood in silence, looking down on the city, wondering if there was more I could do in that moment to make things better.
'This arrangement is not permanent.' He said. 'It would be unjust of me to burden you with this duty unnecessarily.'
"You just needed me to deal with a heretic." I said.
'I needed someone who was strong-willed enough to kill a High Priest.' He spoke. 'He was genuinely faithful, nobody could have earned the honor he had with anything less than total conviction. I believe that he truly thought his choice was the only way to save his people, I did not even notice until it was too late to stop him.'
"Barely any time passed for me." I said. "I died, and suddenly I was in your palace."
'You needed to be, to receive my gift.' I touched my heart, I could feel the foreign power welling up within me, any and all of my spells could be used to heal people. 'My attention is constantly being diverted by my faithful, all seeking my aid in one way or another.'
"Imperator." I looked over to see Takda wearing the vestments he'd worn in service to Kurtulmak. "The preparations are finished, we can begin the ritual at your word."
I nodded. I followed him through the city, down to the site where the town had once been. Nobody had rebuilt, all that remained was ruins. Though damaged, the Temple of Kurtulmak still stood. We went in, calm eyes regarding me with a glimmer of hope. I was mildly surprised to see Tallyn in attendance.
"Why are you here?" I asked. "Your place is with Bahamut."
"Solidarity." He said. "Mitne forced these people to convert, and I did nothing to stop this. It does not matter that I was deceived, I am here to show that I will lead my Temple justly."
I gave him a solid nod.
It wasn't just Clerics and Paladins of Kurtulmak in attendance, but Sorcerers and Warlocks, Fighters and Barbarians.
This was our fighting force, out of ten thousand still alive.
The Warlocks still had one pale yellow eye, the mark of their Pact, but it was dull and blind, signifying their power was gone. The Clerics were able to tap into the divine essence that permeated the area, but they were reduced to only the weakest spells, as if brought down to Level 1. The Paladins lacked the strength they once had.
Only the Sorcerers, the Fighters, and the Barbarians held any power.
'This is your duty.' Bahamut spoke. 'I shall remain separate for a time, to give you the space you need.'
I could feel Bahamut pulling away from me, my once-blind eye growing blurry until it was blind once more, save for a distant light. I stumbled a little as I made my way to the pulpit. I closed my eyes, trying to think of the words I needed to say.
"Kurtulmak is dead." I spoke after several moments of deliberation. "And so was I." I looked up at everyone. "For you, it has only been a single year, for me, it has barely been a day. I gazed upon Tiamat, and was engulfed in a bright light, and in the next moment, I stood within the halls of Bahamut's Palace."
I paused for a moment. "Kurtulmak charged into battle, knowing we were going to die regardless." I stated. "To die as cowards before her, or to die in defiance- He chose defiance. When I was instantly incinerated, he kept moving, when the Paladins of Bahamut fell, he kept fighting. And when Bahamut arrived, it was already too late. Our God had died."
I could see their tears, they had not been allowed to mourn.
"It was not Bahamut who safeguarded my soul, but Asgorath, Father of Dragons, and the only one to grant our God any justice when it mattered. It was not benevolence that led to him saving me, nor any greater desire to interfere. Mine is the unwritten tale, the untold fate, a complete nobody who was guided along paths I had no say in- and that was enough to merely interest him."
I did not speak with malice nor judgment. This was a simple fact, the reality of my death, the reason for my rebirth.
"I am alive simply because I simply was too unpredictable, and that was enough for him to get involved." I felt Bahamut's gift flare up within me, such a tiny flame held within my very soul, not much different from the one Asgorath had offered me.
"Asgorath offered me a choice." I stated. "To rise up as a replacement for our God, to take on his duties and lead us into a greater future, or to merely be reborn with the strength to rebuild. I chose to be reborn, for Kurtulmak is our God, and I could not usurp him."
I gripped the pulpit. "So we are gathered now, in remembrance, in worship, to a God who has died, in the dim hope he will return."
I stepped away, and we prepared the ritual. Without Divinity, it would hold no power, it was rote mimicry of the real thing. "Kurtulmak." I spoke. "Horned Sorcerer, the Watcher and Devourer, Steelscale and Stingtail, Gnomesmasher... The First Kobold, and the First Sorcerer, true Emperor of Darastrixthurhi. We are gathered now in remembrance and faith, to grant you that which is deserved. Accept our devotion, and if you yet live, grant us a sign, that you still live."
Nothing was expected to happen, yet we were still disappointed.
"Clerics, Paladins." I said. "Dredge up what knowledge you have, this is only the first ritual, and it is far from the last. I grant you the authority to gather what is needed, so that we may succeed."
"Zyak qe coi." Those gathered spoke.
We dispersed, Tallyn and I walked back into the city, not speaking a word, and then we went our separate ways. As I returned to the throne room, I briefly regarded the gathered Kobolds. "If you are here to ask something of me, make it quick. I would like to rest."
"Imperator." One of them said. "We are the Council that your brother gathered. We were hoping you could go over some things that have been pushed aside, thanks to Mitne."
"Do you have them written down or otherwise in a format that I can go over?" I asked.
"No, Imperator. Currently, our Artificers are working on making paper due to your prior decree, we only have so much, and we're setting it aside for the people."
I nodded. "Then I will suffer through a meeting, as that is a priority." I said. I walked over to the stairs and sat down on them, I was not in the right state of mind to bother with the throne. "Explain what needs done."
They kept it concise. The basic details was that Mitne was subtly sabotaging everything, forcing Tallyn to do stupid shit in the name of Bahamut, like having him decree a reservoir would be built nearby that would connect with Darastrixthurhi, but would be impractical because the aquifers most certainly didn't have enough water to fill it, let alone do anything useful.
Still, they had ideas that were sound, that same reservoir idea could be useful if implemented correctly, we just needed more water, as well as a way to cycle it safely. There was also an initiative to name the streets and paths of the city, Mitne had insisted on theologically appropriate naming, but didn't specify, expecting the Council to listen to his preaching.
"Name the streets whatever the fuck you want." I said. "But the main thoroughfare will bear Kurtulmak's name, is that understood?"
"Yes, Imperator." She replied with a smile.
There was also the matter of the hostile Kobolds, a detail I hadn't been made aware of until just now. They were people who got in and became hostile, nobody knew what to do with them, but killing fellow Kobolds felt wrong, so they just... kind of let them loose in the city's dungeons.
"We will have to deal with them sooner, rather than later." I said. "I want every option considered, reconciliation and extermination, anything that comes to mind. Do we have any form of contact with the world outside our territory?"
"Very limited communication, the way is guarded on both sides, our fighters and rangers man the wall, the U.S. has soldiers outside of range guarding their side, it's mutually understood we're not leaving and nobody's going out. Not when mere skin contact leads to a hostile enemy."
"I want a more solid form of communication provided." I said. "I don't care if I have to use Witch Bolt every day on power cells to keep something running, we need to have a means of swift communication in the event something is catastrophically fucked up."
"I will get on that, Imperator." I looked at the man who spoke, it took me a moment to recognize him.
"Baruk... Dad..."
He gave me a smile and nodded. "At your command." He said.
I nodded back. "You have my full authority to do what is needed. You have a better idea of our situation than I do, I expect nothing less than your full cooperation with one another. Nothing is so trivial that you cannot spare a moment. Understood?"
"Yes, Imperator!"
"Good. Dismissed."
All but my father left. I stood up, walked over to him, and hugged him.
"Did mom survive?" I asked.
"I'm sorry, Ruuk."
I nodded. "I figured, she would have been on the Council." I gave a short, hollow laugh. "No doubt she died protecting the Nursery."
"She died getting one of the few solid hits on Tiamat out of any of us." He said. "It was enough to save my life."
I let go. "We will bring her back." I said. "I-"
I felt Bahamut return like a surge of power, I gasped as half of my eyesight returned. Dad held me, keeping me steady. "She is proud of you." Bahamut spoke through me. "So many of your people are here, and they are waiting, willing to return, waiting to welcome you, whichever comes first, they have not forgotten."
"Ruuk?" Dad asked, concerned.
"That was a direct message from Bahamut." I said. "It's a long story, and I am not in a state to explain it right now. He felt it necessary to let you know."
I could see the tears welling up in his eyes. He hugged me again, tightly, and without much else to say, he left.
'Apologies.' Bahamut stated. "She was insistent."
I gave a short laugh. If anyone could get a God to deliver a message, it was going to be her.
I walked to the bedroom, passively noted the interior was decorated with symbols to Bahamut, along with other miscellaneous stuff. My eyes settled on a spear, and I picked it up before holding it close. It's never a good idea to go to bed with a deadly weapon, but for a moment, I pretended that spear still held something of my beloved God.
The narrow tunnels writhed around me, voices screaming as the caverns filled, claws scratching, fangs biting.
In the distance, a voice spoke.

2023.06.09 10:20 SquidNinja17 Power tool recommendations for new apartment building manager?

I recently became the building manager for my apartment building and need to buy my own cordless drill/driver and reciprocating saw. The guys I'll be replacing gave some pretty detailed recommendations, but after some time online, it seems they bought their tools back when brands were less shit. They placed DeWalt in the same tier as Milwaukee and Makita; according to some of you, DeWalt has lost their way. They recommended I go more in the prosumer direction though, recommending Craftsman, Ryobi, and Kobalt for that.
I found some dirt cheap Craftsman stuff at Lowes ($86 for a drill/driver, battery, charger, and small drill bit/driver head set), but apparently they've really shit the bed in recent years, so I'm not sure I wanna go that route. Ridgid and Ryobi come highly recommended here, so I might go with them? I always though Home Depot was shit, but they're the only ones near me that sell these along with Makita and Milwaukee.
Anyway, right now I'm planning on splurging for a solid drill, probably Makita, and a corded recip saw from a more prosumer brand. I'd also like to know the cheapest way to get the tools and bits, there's so many goddamn combo sets I have no idea what the right move is. BTW I really don't need an impact driver, so I'm trying to avoid combos that include them.

2023.06.09 06:03 Objective_Campaign82 Sins of the Father Ch36 (Hellworlder pirates 2)

Standing and moving still brought the Arbiter a lot of pain. But the Law’s grim enforcer couldn’t let anyone see that weakness. Especially not with the pirate before them and the very same assassin who had nearly killed them weeks before beneath that pirate’s foot.
The Arbiter had only just been cleared for light duty and decided to spend that time with the Officers in charge of watching the pirates Demon ship. They weren’t ADCU since those officers couldn’t be wasted on a simple stakeout. The Arbiter however had been assured the Officers in charge there were the best they had. But not two minutes within the stakeout tent the Arbiter had learned that the pirate Captain had slipped past the officers assigned to tail her. And more disturbingly that every pirate who left the Astaroth had slipped their tails with disdainful ease.
The utter lack of concern had further stoked their fury. According to the officer on duty every pirate that left eventually made a mess of something and stirred up a minor disturbance. And that only a few that left were unaccounted for.
The complete lack of awareness for how shady and suspicious all that should have sounded baffled the Arbiter’s mind. They knew crime and violence didn’t come so naturally to other species as it did for the Arbiter’s human mind. But the failure to make such a basic connection that the pirates were creating distractions so that other pirates could do their work covertly, screamed at incompetence.
That led to the Arbiter learning that all the officers in charge of the overwatch operation were actually low level beat cops and file clerks. Looking into the system used to select these officers the Arbiter learned that they weren’t just incompetent, but so incompetent that the staggering number of negative reports had confused the filing system and had placed them into the highest bracket of trusted officers. The system was made to calculate negative values but couldn’t properly place such incompetent people into their proper bracket because there wasn’t a bracket appropriately low enough to place them into. So instead it simply went past the lowest level and placed them into the highest level.
And of course such poor officers couldn’t simply be fired because the officers workers union would make a fuss. Which meant the SS couldn’t replace these idiots with any slightly more intelligent sapients.
The bureaucratic idiocy was so infuriating that the Arbiter had lashed out at a nearby pole before they could think better of it. The pole snapped at the impact, fell over, and collapsed half the tent with it.
After that little outburst the Arbiter decided to take a walk and calm down. Only to stumble upon the missing pirate captain locked in a life-or-death battle with the very same assassin who had ambushed them just weeks before.
The Arbiter hadn’t been there for the start of the fight, but simple deduction was enough to reason that the assassin had likely initiated the conflict. They had mentioned Astarte’s name on the night of the attack. And the Pirate had no reason to seek out and attack the assassin.
During that fight The Arbiter had barely survived their encounter with the assassin. The assassin’s prosthetic modifications presented a gap in power that the Arbiter just couldn’t bridge. But despite fighting what should have been a one sided battle, the pirate was doing surprisingly well. In fact if the Arbiter was any judge, Astarte seemed to have a slight advantage.
Not in speed, power, or endurance. The assassin’s mechanical body was simply too powerful for a human to matchup. But in skill Astarte out matched the mechanical assassin.
Astarte dodged and weaved without effortless ease, getting past the assassin’s guard to strike at their, or her, mechanical body. If the assassin hadn’t been a machine then Astarte would have won by now, even with the gap in power.
Rachel felt slightly ashamed at her own poor showing against the assassin when compared to Astarte’s fight. The shame then quickly burned into anger as the Arbiter gripped the rifle at their side and pulled it out to try and shoot the assassin. Unlike the Arbiter had been that night, Astarte was wearing that ridiculous dark red armor and had a sword like she was some sort of space samurai. The Arbiter had done well that night, and their lack of superior weaponry had been their only flaw. One that had been amended with the addition of a more powerful pulse rifle.
They tried to line up a shot on the assassin that wouldn’t hit Astarte, when Astarte began to speak. “You wanna know the funny part. Greyson didn’t even care that you were gone.”
Wait, did these two share a past. The Arbiter guessed that old saying about birds of a feather was true. Who was Greyson? Some sort of man they had both known?
“Didn’t even question me about. Just said ‘Zera’s gone, now you will guard my back’” the pirate continued. “Then not even a week later I was second in command and got to sleep in his comfy bed.” The pirate gave her attacker a sloppy lascivious grin.
“And then you killed him like the deceptive whore you are!” the assassin spat, her attacks becoming sloppier with more openings.
Where these two quarreling over a man? The Arbiter felt bile rise into their throat. Two of the deadliest human women they had ever seen fighting over some man they had known. Pathetic. No man was worth that. Especially not whoever this Greyson bastard was given how quickly he had let the pirate into his bed after his first girlfriend disappeared.
Wait, Greyson, pirate, dead. Were they talking about the infamous human pirate, Byron Greyson? The one who had been a menace to the Femeri system, who was responsible for the disappearance of over thirty thousand humans and the deaths of many more? The one whose headless body had turned up one day aboard the drifting remains of the Black Saint? It couldn’t be, right?
But the rise of the Astaroth and Astarte had happened shortly before Greyson’s mysterious death. It seemed too coincidental.
“Of course I did, I refused to be the latest women he ruined and dumped into the gutter. Face it, your days were numbered. If it wasn’t me it would have been him.” The pirate said with a derisive sneer.
A bit callous and mercenary, but if they were discussing Greyson then likely not inaccurate.
The assassin however didn’t see that logic. “LIAR!” she screamed as she flew into a rage.
Then the Arbiter saw the reasoning behind Astarte’s taunts. This assassin was dangerously unhinged, and Astarte was using that to bait her into a trap.
The next sequence of attacks was too fast for the Arbiter to follow. A sword hilt to the face, followed by something launching out of the assassin’s arm. Then somehow Astarte had her other arm in her grip and flipped the assassin over a shoulder. With the assassin on the ground, Astarte quickly pressed one leg to their back, and with the arm in hand began to pull. The assassins sudden ultrasonic scream made the Arbiter vison darken at the edges, and maybe caused their ears to bleed a little.
Then the arm came out with a pop and the screaming stopped.
The pirate looked at the arm for a second, before lifting it above her head and swinging it down into the assassin’s head. The loud conk of metal on metal was enough to startle the Arbiter out of her awe and terror.
The barrel of their pulse cannon lifted up with Astarte centered in its sight “FREEZE!” the Arbiter roared with all their might.
Astarte paused mid swing, looked towards the Arbiter, and then raised both of her hands above her head. As well as the assassins severed arm. “It was self defense.” The pirate said quickly.
The Arbiter could have sworn they saw a flash of red. But it happened so fast that they weren’t sure if it was really there. And if it was then why would the pirates eye flash red?
The eye crossed by a gruesome scar. Did the pirate have a glass color changing eye?
No, her eyes were both clearly moving around and focusing on things like they should. Could it be cybernetic? Those were supposed to be impossible, too complicated to properly miniaturize with current technology.
It was something to investigate.
The Arbiter had been so focused on Astarte that they hadn’t been watching the assassin close enough. In a movement the Arbiter hadn’t seen the assassin threw Astarte off her back before popping up to her feet. Astarte went down onto the ground and the assassin lurched forward to attack her downed foe. But before she could reach the pirate three quick blasts from the Arbiters rifle stopped her in her tracks.
One had winged her side, another went wide. But the third had caught her right where a liver should have been. The assassin stuttered, but wasn’t dead. They dodged the next shot by ducking and then the second by somehow leaping ten meters into the air and onto a window seal. The assassin looked down on the two women and was clearly judging their chances at victory. But with an, admittable impressive, one-handed springlike flip Astarte was back on her feet, sword ready for another round.
The assassin’s strange mechanical face scowled before another impossible jump sent her over a nearby building and out of sight.
The Arbiter relaxed once the assassin was gone, but Astarte didn’t. The pirate turned, grabbed the Arbiters gloved hand, and pulled her into a jog down the open alleyway. “Come on, there’s an open lot nearby. Can’t jump us from there.” She said without looking back as she dragged the Arbiter along.
For a stunned few seconds Rachel stared at the strong hand grasping her own smaller one. But then the Arbiter saw the logic in Astarte’s worry and forced their hand to release the pirate and ran alongside her.
A few times the Arbiter had noticed a thin humanoid shadow leap between the buildings above them, but a quick turn down an alley from Astarte had them moving away from the incoming ambush from the assassin chasing them via roof tops. In no time at all they made it to an open loading dock for a nearby warehouse. Astarte ran into its center and scanned the roof tops, the Arbiter followed suit.
The Arbiter and the Pirate stood back to back, each searching for any signs of the mutual foe.
“There!” Astarte shouted while pointing her finger at a roof top.
The Arbiter stared up, but couldn’t see anything. But following the pirate’s direction they raised their rifle and shot at the edge of the building Astarte had pointed at. The blasts landed and then the crouched figure of the assassin rose up and backed away.
How had the pirate seen her? The Arbiter spared her a glance and saw a second flash of red before the pirate shifted her head.
“You should call for backup.” The pirate stated while still scanning the roof tops.
“To arrest the assassin?” the Arbiter asked before they could think better of it.
Astarte snorted. “Wouldn’t trust any SS to arrest a dead log, let alone Zera. But more witnesses might scare her off.”
Two things stood out in that statement, the assassin’s apparent name, and “SS, is that supposed to be short for station security?”
“Schutzstaffel actually, its just a strange coincidence they line up” the Pirate joked wryly.
The Arbiter scowled “You think the Station security are like the Nazi’s?” The Arbiter’s lessons about the various evil factions during Earths history had left her with nightmares for years. Crucifixion, death by a thousand cuts, blood eagles, and the like had disturbed their six-year-old mind. Their lessons had spent weeks on all the evils humanity inflicted upon each other, all the way until First contact.
“If the kinky boot fits.” Astarte said while examining the Arbiter’s own black boots.
The Arbiter swished their cloak to hide their boots, and the pirates gaze snapped back up to the rooftops. The Arbiter made the call, and the idiots in charge of the tent said they would need a few minutes to ‘locate’ their rifles and arm shields. Why they had to be located in the first place confused the Arbiter? They couldn’t be so incompetent as to not know where their weapons were, right?”
Tense minutes past before Astarte let out a sigh of relief. “I think she gave up.” she then shot the Arbiter an accusing glare “I almost had the bitch. If you hadn’t interfered we wouldn’t have to worry about her coming back.”
"You expect me to stand by while you committed murder?” The Arbiter growled, now stepping back from the pirate and reaching for a set of cuffs.
The pirate frowned, then glanced up as if recalling a distant memory. “I… ugh felt my life was in imminent danger, and feared for my life while facing down a clearly aggressive and violent deathworlder with a weapon. I used whatever objects I could find at the time…I carry no weapons and was forced to use ceremonial objects in crude, and ugh…unusual ways for self defense. I did not think retreat was possible so I acted to end the threat” she said in a bland staccato rhythm of everyone reciting words from memory. Her words obviously citing several different laws pertaining to self-defense.
The Arbiter felt an eye twitch. “The law pertaining to Deathworlder assailants was not intended to include Deathworlder victims.” The Arbiter said slowly.
Astarte shrugged “Union vs. Trevor Philips established that the enforcement of the law was done by the letter of the law, not the spirit. By that ruling and precedent I acted reasonably and was within my rights for self-defense. Any attempt to detain me would result in punitive measures from my legal representation.”
In all their time on the ADCU the Arbiter had never encountered a criminal so well versed in the intricacies of Union law. Some loop holes were well known, and easy for Officers to circumvent in order to attain an arrest. But the Arbiter hadn’t encountered something like this before.
The Arbiter looked down and noticed the sword she still held, red blood from the pirate running down its blade. “So that sword isn’t a weapon?” The Arbiter asked pointedly.
The feline smile that covered Astarte’s face sent shivers up their spine. “My dear officer, as you can notice I am of half Japanese heritage, a hafu if you will. I am dressing in the traditional fashions of my people. The armor, the katana, and the wakizashi are all hallmarks of the samurai I am descended from. None of these are worn for anything beyond cultural heritage. And for that matter, my crew wear the same to honor my ancestry.”
The Arbiter sighed. Astarte’s defense, though blatantly false, was airtight. Arresting her now would only give her ammunition to legally strike back. And with the recent backlash of the Deathworlder crack down the Arbiter could doom Judge’s career. It had been a celebrated move of the last chief, but the knock-on effects of it had resulted in several months of rioting, looting, and political discourse in the heart of the Union. The last chief was forced to step down and Judge took his place and was still trying to reverse the damages. Which was hard with all the precincts fighting him on it. Those officers had too many friends torn apart by Terran criminals to ever let that grudge go.
“Then you may leave the arm behind and be one your way.” The Arbiter ordered.
Astarte blinked, “the arm?”
The Arbiter pointed to the severed arm still within the pirate’s grasp “That is evidence in an on going investigation. LEAVE. IT. BEHIND” The Arbiter explained, growling out the last words slowly. Just because Astarte had likely saved the Arbiter’s life with some quick thinking didn’t erase the fact that she was a person of interest/suspect in the same case.
Astarte glanced down at the severed arm and blinked as if surprised she was still holding it. Then tossed it carelessly onto the ground. “All yours, make sure to check for bugs before plugging it in.”
“Computer viruses hidden in its OS. Thing could have all sorts of things hidden within.”
“And how do you know?”
“I don’t. It’s just the sort of thing I would do myself. Try loading it onto a separate server. Oh, and check for small explosives.”
“Danm Deathworlders” the Arbiter growled as they now considered the severed arm on the ground next to a small splatter of Astarte’s blood. She was right, Deathworlders were known for their tricks and traps. Humans especially. During one investigation a load of seized morphine from an illegal clinic had been stored next to an unstable chemical that reacted poorly to the jostling of the transport and destroyed the evidence in a fiery explosion.
Astarte chuckled “Glass stones Arbiter.”
“Glass stones, it’s a human malaphor of sorts. I’ll leave the details for you to figure out. Good luck with tracking down Zera, I’d recommend starting with the prison records on Union Station Parox.” She said as she turned aways and strode off. Walking in the opposite direction of the arriving officers, half of which were missing their weapons or shields.
The Arbiter let out a sigh as she observed the most incompetent idoits she had ever seen strut onto the lot without a care in the universe.
“You called us Sir.” The lead Voral said.
The Arbiter took in a deep breath “Yes I did. Ten minutes ago.”
“It was a long walk.” The officer said defensively, no care for the Arbiters growing anger.
“Its only a few hundred standard meters. But that doesn’t matter I encountered an assassin in the midst of their crime. That’s their arm.”
The Voral looked panicked and began to look from side to side.
The Arbiter felt an involuntary eye twitch and clenched her fist. “The assassin is gone.”
The Voral relaxed “So you want us to secure the evidence?” he asked.
That had been the Arbiters plan, but now seeing them mill about aimlessly they changed their mind. “No, secure the area and stay out of CSI’s way. Understood?”
The officer looked offended. “Sir, its just an arm. We don’t need to wait around for CSI, one of my men can bag it right now.”
Patience wearing thin the Arbiter marched right into the Voral’s face. The fact the Officer loomed over her by two meters did little to diminish the Arbiter’s menacing aura. “AM. I. UNDERSTOOD?”
“Yes Sir.” The cowed Voral officer answered with a nervous buzz of his wings.
“Then go.”
Ten minutes later six medium shuttles from the CSI unit, and two small shuttles from the ADCU were on the scene of the lot and in the alley where the Arbiter had stumbled upon Astarte. Edict and Prosecutor began to jump along the rooftops, recreating the assassin’s movements and collecting more evidence.
The assassin’s arm, and the dried sample of Astarte’s blood was collected. As well as fragments of what looked to be a broken glass eye with a micro camera.
They lost the assassin’s trail after they ducked into the inner hull of the station and escaped across the pipes, wires, and support structure of Unity.
Thirty minutes after that they departed for the central precinct. The Arbiter within the darkened confines of the ADCU shuttle felt safe enough to take off the hood. Caleb and Bartolv did the same. They noticed her pensive mood and didn’t disturb her.
It wasn’t lost on her that Astarte knew exactly who this assassin was. And if she hadn’t left those pretty blatant clues about how to identify her then then Rachel would be trying to acquire a warrant to bring her in for questioning. But that still left her with a lot of questions.
And despite the answers she might get, she had the sinking feeling it wouldn’t be enough to see the whole picture. How big was this whole thing?
