2023.05.31 15:31 JohannesMeanAd2 The Centennial Series, S2E2: 1923 Indianapolis 500 - Indy goes international!
| Hello everyone! I hope you all had fun watching the Monaco Grand Prix this weekend, filled with many different strategic twists and turns and showcasing some of the finest displays of driver ability we've seen this season! As we all know, the Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most historic motor races on the planet, with a rich heritage going all the way back to 1929. However, there is one other open wheel race that has historically been run on the same day, but halfway across the world in America: The Indianapolis 500. With speeds in excess of 230 miles per hour and attendance soaring past 300,000 on race day, the Indy 500 boasts arguably the most impressive CV of any active motor race in the world with its over 110-year-long history. Makes sense, then, that this would be our next destination for The Centennial Series retrospective. The Start of the 1923 Indianapolis 500. Image credits to michaeljesse.net For those of you on this sub who don't know, I make a series of commemorative posts for Grand Prix-adjacent races that occurred exactly 100 years ago as their anniversaries pass by us. Here's my most recent one in case you're interested in reading further. This will be the second installment in this year's retrospective, so let's get into it! Just like today, in 1923 the Indianapolis 500 held a special place in the motor racing world as arguably one of the fastest and most exciting races out there. If we had a holy trinity of races in the 1920s, they would be the Italian Targa Florio, the French Grand Prix, and this race. Indy represented the peak of American motor racing since the end of World War I, when rival events such as the ACA Grand Prize and the William K. Vanderbilt Cup fell into abeyance and irrelevance. Aerial view of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 1923. You might be wondering, "this is a race that's still held today in the IndyCar series. Why would you do a retrospective on it if it's not a Grand Prix?" That's a great question and the answer lies in the past. Though it may seem strange, unlike in the 1950s, during the 1920s the Indy 500 was equally as relevant to the Grand Prix racing world as it was to that of racing in the United States. Quite often, many of the best manufacturers of Europe sought after victory in the Indianapolis 500 as a means of proving their race cars’ (and road cars) worthiness on a global scale. Some successful examples include Delage in the 1914 running, and Peugeot, who successfully won three times in 1913, 1916 and 1919. As such, it made sense that the then-organizers of the Indy 500 (and most auto racing in America), the AAA Contest Board, wanted to keep in touch with the latest developments in international racing to maintain that worldwide interest in the Sweepstakes. In the previous year's Indianapolis 500 ( Which you can read my post about here), the technical regulations remained the same as they had been since the end of World War I, that of 3.0 liter engine regulations, on the grounds that the American auto industry still hadn't fully recovered a regular peacetime manufacturing capacity after The Great War. However, this would all change for 1923. In 1922, the Automobile Club de France, or the ACF, adopted new, 2.0 liter engine regulations with slightly smaller weight requirements as the first true "new" post-war regulation. In the pursuit of maintaining international interest in the Indy 500, the AAA decided to follow suit for the 1923 season. In recognition of unifying their formula, the folks in Europe known as the AIACR (Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus, the FIA of its day) designated the Indianapolis 500 as a Grande Epreuve (French for “big test”), which was back then the term for an "official" international Grand Prix race. And so, with the race now genuinely having international importance once more, it's time to see who's who and who the favorites were for the 1923 Indy 500: The Team of Bugattis lining up for a photo at the 1923 Indy 500. Image credits to Simanaitis Says. The first major European manufacturer to jump at the Indy opportunity would be Bugatti. Led by the great Ettore Bugatti himself, the Alsatian manufacturer had gained a reputation for punching well above their weight in the Grand Prix scene, with multiple voiturette victories to their name in 1920 and 1921, and making the step up to the Grand Prix races in 1922. Despite their gentlemanly lineup, their results were very promising, taking runner-up in France and third place at Monza. For 1923, they planned bigger and better things, but for the sake of getting their name out, Bugatti set out with their 1922-spec Type 30, modified to only have one seat (because back then Grand Prix racers still needed two seats). Their drivers would be led by Pierre de Vizcaya and the legendary Polish designer Count Louis Zborowski. They were joined by a series of other wealthy aristocrats interested in a flick of speed, including the Parisian Prince de Cystria, and the Argentinians Martin de Alzaga and Raul Riganti. With just 90 horsepower on tap, Bugatti's best chances came from capitalizing on attrition. But still it's quite incredible that they're out here having only made it to the big leagues a year prior. The Supercharged Mercedes M7294. Stripped down to only one seat for Indianapolis. Image credits to Supercars.net Christian F. Lautenschlager. Image from Fine Art America. And now for a manufacturer I'm sure everyone is familiar with: Mercedes! By this point, Mercedes were still virtually the "exiled genius” of the European racing world. Their status as a German car manufacturer left them banned from taking part in the French Grand Prix after The Great War, but that did not stop the engineers at Stuttgart from innovating and being ahead of the curve. At the 1922 Targa Florio, they introduced the world's first supercharged (and by extension, forced induction) racecars, capitalizing on a gray area for the Grand Prix regulations of the time. Seeing the potential of the supercharging device, Mercedes opted to take it one step further for 1923. In a design that complies with the 2.0 liter Grand Prix regulations, they introduced the M7294, designed by Paul Daimler himself. This 120-horsepower beast used centrifugal supercharging to make up for the below-average RPM compared to the naturally aspirated American racers they'd be up against, making this the first effort for a supercharged race car at Indy. As they were once again playing with hot stuff, Mercedes entrusted only their absolute best and most knowledgeable drivers with the M7294. The headlining driver would be two-time Grand Prix champion Christian Lautenschlager, alongside their top testers Max Sailer and Christian Werner. Duesenberg Special at Indianapolis, 1924. No good photos of their 1923 special exist. Image credits to Indiana Memory Collections. The rather abrupt nature of the switch from 3.0 liter engines to 2.0 liter engines for the Indy 500 sent a paradigm-changing shockwave to the balance of power among American racing teams. Many manufacturers found themselves largely underprepared or ill-equipped to handle making all new designs in such a short time for the 1923 Indy 500. One such example would be the Duesenberg brothers. High off of an incredible upset victory at the 1921 French Grand Prix, and a record-breaking Indy 500 win (both with Jimmy Murphy at the helm), it’s safe to say Duesenberg were a staple of American open wheel racing, and in 1923 their absence was very much felt. In the hurried rush to put together a special car in time for Indianapolis, they depleted most of their resources, and sent out three cars, mostly for relief drivers. Only one car would start the race, for their chief relief driver Wade Morton, making his Indy 500 debut. Quite the contrast to see only one car from such a big team. The Detroit-based Packard team were able to create a reasonably strong package for the 1923 season, managing around 115 horsepower from their new 2.0 liter special. Although not in as desperate of a situation as Duesenberg were, Packard still put together a strong team, fielding the legendary Ralph DePalma as their headlining driver, alongside Joe Boyer and 1916 winner Dario Resta. Others wouldn’t be so fortunate as Duesenberg and Packard to survive the sudden shift. The Frontenac Motor Corporation, a joint venture between Louis Chevrolet (yes, that Chevrolet), Joe Boyer and car salesman William Small, was the dominant force in Champ Car racing during and after The Great War, with Chevrolet himself leading the race team to glory. After a suboptimal 1922 race in which none of Chevrolet’s cars finished in the top 5, the devastating news that they’d have to rebuild everything they had was the nail in the coffin that would make the Frontenac project go bankrupt, ridding American open wheel racing of one of its strongest teams. Can you imagine that happening to Chevrolet and Team Penske today? Because that’s what this felt like at the time. Miller Type 122 Special, as entered by HCS. Image credits to ConceptCarz. However, where some had failed or struggled, others would absolutely thrive. In the immediate post-war years, The Wisconsonite Harry Miller was the owner of a very successful carburetor-selling business, generating over $1 million in yearly revenue. Miller would put this money to good use, developing a durable and fast racing engine for the Indy 500 (inspired by the old Peugeot engines), which in 1922 would be used by the overall race winner, Jimmy Murphy on his special Duesenberg chassis. The record-breaking pace of Murphy's win ignited huge interest in Miller's fast-growing racing team. Luckily for Miller, his team would stay ahead of the curve for the 1923 regulation change, developing a strong 2.0 liter engine for an elegant and functional design: the Type 122 (named such for the engine size in cubic inches). The Miller 122 was the very first dedicated single-seater race car in the United States. Talk about an innovative race car for the time, back in those days the top Grand Prix cars mandated two seats for driver and mechanic! However, as the need for a mechanic was now optional for the Indy 500, the 122 only had the one seat. The car also boasted a very impressive 120 horsepower. A similar power output to Miller's previous engines, but far more dense given the smaller engine size. Cliff Durant. With the promise of stability at over 110 miles per hour, and especially given the short notice of the regulation change hurting other American manufacturers, Harry Miller's design would have an explosion of interest from many drivers of the American Open Wheel racing establishment. There were no less than eleven of these bad boys lining up for the 1923 Indy 500, making this car a clear favorite for race day. There were two top teams fielding Millers this year, including Cliff Durant’s stable of eight cars with champion drivers such as Earl Cooper and Jimmy Murphy headlining his team’s attack. They would be rivaled by the Harry C. Stutz team (H.C.S. for short), who had just two cars, but packed a real punch by fielding two past Indy 500 champions: Howard “Howdy” Wilcox, and Thomas “Tommy” Milton. Headline for Indiana law prohibiting sporting events occurring on memorial day. Taken from The Daily Republican, January 25th, 1923. So now that we have the exposition out of the way, it's time for the race itself. Well, almost. You see, at the start of 1923, the Indiana State Legislature passed a law that prohibited all sporting events from occurring on Memorial Day, which included the Indianapolis 500 itself. This was done on the grounds that not enough respect had been given to the fallen American soldiers, and that the day was instead used for “games, races, and revelry.” Although this reasoning was sound, many people found this law un-American for limiting free expression. This included the organizers of the Indy 500, who relied on a holiday to guarantee maximal race attendance. There were talks of moving the race to the Saturday before Memorial day (May 26th in this instance), and even potentially making Saturday a special holiday! Honestly, it kind of reeks of making a town around the racetrack called “Speedway” (which actually happened). As no better solution could be found due to the organizers’ insistence on running on a holiday, the race would be held on a Wednesday, May 30th. Joe Boyer in the Packard Special, 1923. Now that we know when the race happens, it's time to actually get into the swing of things. Most teams used the entire month of May leading up to the race to get in private practice sessions, to have the best possible independent data regarding average speed and reliability. As such, there was a pretty clear picture of who had better overall speed, which turned out to be everybody. Before the 4-lap time trials began on Saturday the 26th, Harry Hartz in his Cliff Durant Miller car set a 106 mph average speed lap, which was nearly SIX miles per hour faster than Jimmy Murphy’s pole lap from the year prior. This speed would soon be matched by the likes of Murphy and Milton. Already this Indy 500 was promising to be a showstopper with these speeds. Qualifying began on Saturday, the 26th. Just like it is today, the starting grid would be set by doing 4 laps of the Indy oval at speed, with the average lap (measured in speed, not time) determining your placement. The gentleman Bugatti drivers had very consistent lap speeds, even if their trials were rather slow for the time. The best lap came from Raul Riganti, clocking in at a 95 mph average speed. The Mercedes cars fared only a little better. Lautenschlager and Werner both showed very strong speed in excess of 105 mph on the straights, but had to back off quite a bit in the corners. This evened out to give a lap speed of approximately 95 mph from Werner, and 93 mph from Lautenschlager. Cars lining up for the start of the 1923 Indy 500, ground view, pace car in front. As the European manufacturers struggled, the Americans fared much better. Packard and Miller would both have drivers that beat out Jimmy Murphy’s 100 mph qualifying record from 1922. For Packard, it was DePalma, at around 100.42 miles per hour, promising to the public that this wouldn’t be a Miller whitewash as far as speed goes. But even then, the Millers stood head and shoulders above the rest, particularly with the HCS-entered cars. Tommy Milton would throw down the gauntlet with a murderous speed of 108 mph for pole position! Talk about crazy improvement from the year before. For reference, this year’s record-setting Indy 500 pole speed improved on last year’s by only 0.2 mph. Really speaks to how much of a wild west era 100 years ago was like. Milton’s time would be closely matched by the top two from the past year, Jimmy Murphy and Harry Hartz. They would be joined in the top 5 speeds by Cliff Durant himself, and Packard’s DePalma. And now for the race itself. In front of a rambunctious crowd of over 100,000 strong (there were far less grandstand tickets back then), the pace car led the 24 cars to a rolling start as they roared into turn 1. Tommy Milton built up a very strong lead in the first lap, but Jimmy Murphy negotiated the cars in front of him from the third row to pass Milton by turn four, with Boyer and Hartz closely following. By lap three, Milton overtook Murphy to return to first place, setting the stage for the opening 50 laps of the race, which would be a constant back and forth tussle between these two drivers, both representing the top teams using Miller cars: Murphy for Durant Racing, and Milton for the H.C.S. Motor Company. The crowd could hardly believe such a close and fast battle, no one had ever seen anything like it (they would swap the lead 25 times). Joe Boyer and Ralph DePalma helped keep Packard within touching distance, and the supercharged Mercedes’ proved to surprise in race trim, with Werner reaching the top 10 very quickly. Leaderboard after Lap 10. Credits to goldenera.fi The first 50 laps would see several retirements, including two high speed crashes. On lap 14 Mercedes’ Christian Lautenschlager skidded into the wall at turn 1 at nearly 90 mph, with the driver mostly uninjured. His riding mechanic Jakob Krauss was less fortunate, as he’d suffer a left leg contusion. Lautenschlager was the only driver in the field with a riding mechanic, and the mechanic’s injuries called into question the safety of even having one at all. The other crash would come from Tom Alley, relief driver for former national champion Earl Cooper. Alley lost control at 105 mph entering turn 3, crashing straight into the fence and throwing Alley 20 feet from the car. Alley survived with serious lacerations to his back, but the sheer impact of his car on the catch fence would tragically take the life of a young local spectator, Herbert Shoup. I know it’s very upsetting, but in this day and age it’s always important to remind ourselves of, and respect, the consequences of the danger these drivers, and the people who watched them, faced when racing. A stillframe of actual footage of Howdy Wilcox, Tommy Milton, and Jimmy Murphy battling for the lead in the 1923 Indianapolis 500. Taken from the official Indianapolis Motor Speedway YouTube channel. Leaderboard After 20 out of 200 laps. After Joe Boyer hit the pits for an extended period of time by lap 30 to change spark plugs, Packard’s best hope of a win faded, making it a Miller show up front. But the battle for the lead ramped up considerably by lap 50. Now, joining Milton and Murphy were their team-mates at HCS and Durant respectively, making it a two on two battle. Howard Wilcox had recovered from a serious qualifying mistake putting him much lower on the grid and now was in the mix with Milton, and Murphy was joined by the owner of the team himself, Cliff Durant. The Mercedes of Werner slowly improved once more, now up to 6th, showing promise that the supercharger may really be the game changer Mercedes had made it out to be. Jimmy Murphy (right). Image credits to Sports Car Digest. Wilcox’s charge wouldn’t last very long, as by lap 60 his car had a broken clutch, dropping him out of the race. He would soon be followed by Murphy, who by the same time had problems brewing from within his Miller that slowed his pace a good bit. He went into the pits for nearly five laps to resolve these issues, which put him well down the order and hoping for a miracle for a repeat victory. This left only Durant and Milton up front, with only 10 seconds between them, and Harry Hartz half a track behind, though Durant began to ease off due to slowly-building exhaustion that would go on to affect several drivers throughout the day. Even though they showed promise early on, much like the Frontenacs from the year prior, Packard would have a devastating and sudden end to their 500 charge. On lap 59, they lost Joe Boyer due to a defective differential, and it would seem that some of the mechanics didn’t check the head gaskets on the other two cars, as those breaking would be the downfall of both DePalma and Dario Resta, on laps 69 and 88 respectively. Less than halfway through the race the biggest challenger to the Millers on outright speed would be gone in a flash. Christian Werner, circa 1924. His car was the strongest of the Mercs at Indy that day. Image from Mercedes-Benz digital archive. Where some challengers would flounder, others would silently surprise. By lap 80, the two remaining Mercedes’, piloted by Werner and Sailer, had found themselves in the top 5. Although not challenging race leader Milton for pace, it was as clear as day that the two Germans had consistent speed and utmost confidence with the M7294. With that being said, driving it at the pace they were proved extremely exhausting. Multiple stops had to be made to rotate drivers out of the cars, sometimes requiring assistance to even get out of the car. Despite all of that the Mercs maintained position, and by the halfway point had found themselves in third place. Howdy Wilcox in H.C.S. Special, 1923. By that point, however, the battle for the lead had cooled off. On the back stretch of the circuit, Cliff Durant came to a dead stop. The exact reasoning never got clarified, but eventually his car restarted and he rejoined the race more than 6 laps behind the leader. This left his more conservative team-mate Harry Hartz inheriting second place, one of the only cars left to not get lapped by Tommy Milton. With a huge lead now established, the HCS team pulled Milton in to give him a rest, as even he isn’t impervious to severe exhaustion. Milton had blistered, severely injured hands, which prompted the team to order Milton to have some rest, handing the car over to Wilcox, who remained on standby after his own car had dropped out. With only Hartz and Werner anywhere near their huge lead, Wilcox took over, with only one goal in mind: to keep the car on the track until Milton recovered. Leaderboard after 120 out of 200 laps Wilcox would relieve Milton for 48 laps, and the car remained firmly in the lead over Hartz, even extending it to one full lap ahead. In that time several other cars would be vanquished through spending countless dozens of minutes in the pitlane, fixing mechanical problems that developed over time. This included the Mercedes of Werner, which by lap 120 was the only good Mercedes left. Their race was compromised significantly when the car caught fire in the pitlane, though it would be extinguished very quickly. As Werner’s car left the pitlane, relieved by Sailer, the crowd gave the Germans a standing ovation! Talk about ways of catching people’s attention, a pitstop fire is definitely one of them! Although this frantic moment almost took them out, at its very next pitstop at 140 laps, Werner’s battered Mercedes came into the pits overheated and clearly in need of a rest. They would rejoin after spending dozens of laps in the pits, but with the dream of a supercharged podium at the fastest race in the world officially over. The excitement of the beginning of the race wore off by lap 150, as due to the high temperatures of the day, many drivers had to be relieved and substituted by their designated stand-ins, removing the grandeur from what started as such a competitive race. The high “driver attrition,” so to speak, caused the race to be significantly slower than the 1922 Indy 500. Although Milton had recovered in time to return to his HCS Miller, his lap speeds dropped off significantly, which did allow the catching Jimmy Murphy to unlap himself a couple times, but never enough to actively challenge for victory. Official Race Results as reported in The Indianapolis Star, May 31st, 1923. Tommy Milton crossing the line to receive the checkered flag for victory. After 200 laps, five-and-a-half hours, At an average speed of approximately 90 miles per hour, bruised and battered, but NOT beaten, the H.C.S. Special Tommy Milton crossed the finish line in first place, making him the first-ever two-time champion of the Indianapolis 500. The crowd roared in excitement for such a valiant effort, very deserving of over $30,000 in winnings he received. Cliff Durant’s team also performed admirably despite failing to win, with Harry Hartz once again finishing 2nd only one lap behind Milton, and Jimmy Murphy taking home third place. This Indy 500 would go down in history as a groundbreaking one, putting Indianapolis back on the global stage and providing the best framework in the world for close wheel to wheel racing at high speeds, just like the Indy 500 does today. Manufacturers left this race both brilliantly satisfied and extremely disappointed: Bugatti wasn't exactly the fastest manufacturer out there, having only one finishing car in 9th place, 56 minutes behind Milton. But the aristocrats that funded their entry had an absolute blast driving at speed down the fastest racetrack on Earth, and for that you gotta at least respect the effort. The independent work of Prince de Cystria and his fellow aristocratic racing enthusiasts helped put Bugatti on the map across the pond. Within one year, Bugatti had made their Grand Prix debut at home, raced in the first Grand Prix at Monza, and now raced at Indianapolis. It’s safe to say their future looked bright at this point in time. Packard, by the skin of their teeth, and thanks to a truly great driver lineup, had proven that they could come close to challenge Miller’s outright speed, but their mechanical shortcomings on the biggest stage would prove to be the most embarrassing. Just like Frontenac and Chevrolet before them, Packard would “pack up” their racing efforts at the end of the 1923 season, unwilling to spend more money on what they and the general public viewed as a losing effort. With this result, it became 100% clear that Miller 122 was the open wheel race car to beat not just in America, but the world over, having been the only car to complete the full 200 lap distance in less than 6 hours, and occupying the entire top 4. Although several of the top brass manufacturers in Europe hadn’t raced their designs properly yet, in the first year of American-European convergence, it seemed quite clear that the Americans had a real threat up their sleeve. Rest assured, this would not be the end of Miller’s escapades in Grandes Epreuves this season… It seems history is destined to repeat itself. Just like the Mercedes Formula 1 team of today, in this race Mercedes came with a vision, and despite a very slow start, they steadily improved their position, making the overall podium late in the race. This great result showed the world that a supercharged design really is a viable option in the racing landscape, and it’s safe to say that many in America took notice of their heroics. The M7294 sadly wouldn’t race again in 1923, but rest assured, supercharging would make a ferocious return later in the year… And that concludes my retrospective on the 1923 Indianapolis 500. I want to give a big shoutout to all of the online resources I have used to compile images for this post, to give a more visual aspect to the race we’re looking back on. I also cannot thank enough https://www.goldenera.fi/, the absolutely phenomenal interwar Grand Prix racing website, for the more obscure and detailed information that simply can’t be found anywhere else, especially with the intermediate leaderboards. I adored writing this up, but it wouldn’t be what it is without the invaluable research by the other incredible racing historians that came before me. I hope you guys enjoyed reading about this race as much as I did writing it up. Like I’ve always said, it's important that we remind ourselves of our history, especially with races as long ago as these, as they definitely deserve a fair shot in this fast-paced day and age. The Centennial Series will return in July, for the most important race of the year, and one which bears relevance even in today's racing world: The 1923 French Grand Prix. Until next time, folks! :) submitted by JohannesMeanAd2 to formula1 [link] [comments] |
2023.05.31 14:01 dreftzg [Daily News] Franck Muller Stuffs A Complex Movement Into A Very Sporty Watch, New Limited Edition Halios Is Gorgeous And You Can Get A Stunning Limited Bovet Watch Absolutely Free
It's Wednesday and this is a very bizarre edition, with no major releases but rather: a watch you can’t buy because it’s too expensive, a watch you can buy but would you want to?, a watch you can’t buy without first buying an apartment, a watch that’s just ridiculous but also very affordable, and a watch that you can afford, but can't get. Cool. Also, the giveaway ends today if you're interested.
What's new
1/ Franck Muller Stuffs A Complex Movement Into The Very Sporty Grand Central Tourbillon Flash I’ll go first: I’m not a Franck Muller fan. It’s the case shape that bugs me. That, and the eye watering prices. However, as I learned just a few days ago, there are a lot of people out there who don’t like Franck Muller because they believe the brand is too young, too laid back and too whimsical to be taken as a serious watchmaker. I guess the people at Franck Muller have heard these criticisms and took a super high-end and complex movement and stuffed it into a super sporty, super whimsical case, calling it the Franck Muller Grand Central Tourbillon Flash. Take that, haters.
Just like pretty much every other Franck Muller, the Grand Central Tourbillon Flash has a tonneau case shape. With the Curvex CX architecture which debuted in 2021, this vaguely ovate silhouette captures that slightly eccentric spirit of the tonneau with ease. It’s both dressy and sporty, especially sporty when made from carbon fibre, as is the case with the Grand Central Tourbillon Flash.
The grey and black stripes of the carbon case make for a subtle texture in comparison to the black PVD-coated hardware such as the crown and strap clasp, and dark cases help to reduce the impact of a larger size on the wrist too. Yeah, it’s a pretty big watch, despite being only 36.5mm wide. The issue is with the tonneau case, as it makes the watch 52.65mm long. It also comes up to 12.3mm thick.
Instead of the traditional position at 6 o’clock, the Franck Muller Grand Central Tourbillon has been built from the ground up to show off this feat. Many of the components have been given a black PVD coating which draws extra attention to the brightly-coloured seconds hand mounted to it. The arrow tip and blocky indices are made from intensely coloured PMMA that almost look luminous when provided with light. It’s available in orange, green, or blue, each looking absolutely electric. The watches also come in matching colored straps made with a sporty nylon weave and a calf leather backing, making the watch scream in neon colors.
This is an expensive watch. Like, really expensive. The new Franck Muller Curvex CX Flash Grand Central Tourbillon watches start out at $123,900 USD and increase from there for the models with carbon fiber cases.
2/ Luminox Goes Full Military Spec With Their New Watch Strap a Luminox to your hand and it won’t be mistaken for a Tudor. They have cut a very sharp line of what kind of watches they like doing and they do them perfectly, with military units being some of their biggest customers. Now Luminox is leaning heavily into their military heritage with a new timepiece that compliant with the military performance specification standards of MIL-PRF-46374G, which outlines the requirements for a wristwatch by the U.S. Department of Defense. Known as the Luminox Mil-Spec 3350 Series, the new timepiece expands upon the core design of its fan-favorite Navy SEAL collection with ultra-durable case materials and an upgraded Swiss quartz movement that offers additional protection against both impacts and extreme temperatures.
The overall case shape of the new Luminox Mil-Spec 3350 Series is more-or-less the same as what can be found throughout the brand’s greater Navy SEAL collection, and it offers an angular profile that measures 46mm in diameter by 14mm thick. At launch, this model will be available in only one color - black, with a matte black dial with large white Arabic numeral hour markers and a date window at the 3 o’clock location.
Similar to other Luminox watches, the various luminous elements on the new Luminox Mil-Spec 3350 Series glow different colors in the dark. The tritium tubes that appear on the hour hand, 12 o’clock index, and zero-marker of the bezel all glow yellow; the tip of the seconds hand (which seems to be a traditional painted luminous element rather than a tritium gas-filled tube) glows green, and all of the other tritium tubes that appear on the minute hand and remaining hour markers emit a blue glow to help provide a better orientation of the time when viewed in dark settings.
To further add to its durability and performance, it is powered by the ETA F06.412 quartz movement, which offers a 7-year battery life. Fitted to the 24mm lugs of the Luminox Mil-Spec 3350 Series is a two-piece black rubber strap with a pin buckle, and the watch also comes as a set with an additional fabric NATO strap in a gray and black camo pattern with matching black-finished hardware.
Despite its premium materials and movement, the new Luminox Mil-Spec 3350 Series isn’t all that much more expensive than many of the brand’s entry-level Navy SEAL dive watches. It will set you back $695 USD.
3/ You Can Get This Stunning Limited Bovet Watch Absolutely Free. You Just Have To Buy An Apartment For At Least $5 million Bovet, the coveted independent watch brand, just announced they will be creating 10 special editions of their classic 19Thirty wristwatch for their partnership with the historic Old War Office (OWO) in London and will be decorating the special watches with motifs from the stunning building in which Churchill waged World War II. And you can’t get one. Technically, you can, you will even get it for free, but you have to buy one of the ten apartments in the OWO, and they start at $5 million.
The OWO is a building with incredible looks and even more incredible history, having served as the war strategising place for some of the most important moments in history. It was recently leased for 250 years to a private investor and has been renovate by Raffles as a luxurious hotel with private residences. To mark the occasion, OWO Residences has commissioned Bovet to create ten gold 19Thirty timepieces to gift the ten owners of the ten most luxurious homes.
The model selected for the new owners is the 19Thirty, one of Bovet’s time-only watches in 18k red gold. Introduced in 2015, the style of the Fleurier case, with its crown at noon and small seconds at 6 o’clock, give the 19Thirty its strong pocket watch personality. It’s 42mm wide and just 9mm thick. Borrowing decorative motifs from the OWO, the outer flanks of the red gold case are decorated with a hand-engraved ‘egg and dart’ motif, and the bow at noon is engraved with a marble shell motif found on the fireplaces and mouldings of the OWO.
Like other 19Thirty models, the time indications are presented in an off-centred hours and minutes counter that intersects a smaller seconds counter with Arabic numbers. Forming an upside-down figure eight, the larger counter features a pattern taken from the Rose Ceiling above the grand staircase of the OWO. Using a blue background, the petals of the rose are recreated in gold lacquer. At 3 and 9 o’clock, two circular depressions add relief to the scenery: the one at 3 o’clock houses the power-reserve indicator, and to underscore the symmetry, the one on the left is opened on the barrel.
The Bovet 19Thirty OWO Special Edition is a limited edition of ten watches produced exclusively for owners of the OWO residences. The apartments range in price from $5 million up to $37 million.
4/ BA111OD Sizes Down To 40mm Making It An Even More Attractive Timepiece Despite it’s silly name, Ba111od is becoming one of my favorite watchmakers. They’re Swiss made, completely insane looking, with interesting complications and priced at about a tenth of what you would expect from a watch that looks like a Ba111od. Following the big success of its first tourbillon, Chapter 4.1, The Veblen Dilemma*, which has sold more than 600 pieces to date, Ba111od decided to answer popular requests and release a 40mm version of the otherwise 44mm watch, and they’re calling it the 4.5.
This is not the first watch in the Chapter 4 collection to be encased in a 40mm size. Chapter 4.2 Lily had a 40mm titanium coated with 4N rose gold and pitched as a ladies watch. The next two had black DLC and was released in 40mm as Chapter 4.3 and in 44mm as Chapter 4.4. These two black DLC models were also available as a twin set.
However, to date it seems that the 4.1 has been their greatest hit, so it’s no surprise that they shrunk it down, but making it the exact same watch, with the same materials and colors. This means you get a grade 5 titanium case with a tantalum grey DLC treatment, a hand-wound movement and a 105-hour power reserve.
While Ba111od say they have done this to make the watch more unisex, I would say it’s more likely that there were many people that wanted one, but could not do with the 44mm case. The one other major thing that has changed is the price. While the Chapter 4.1 was limited to 202 pieces and had a retail price of CHF 4,920, the Ba111od Chapter 4.5 The Velben Dilemma Tourbillon, which is on sale right now, will be limited to 111 pieces and has a retail price of CHF 5,540. Deliveries expected from December 2023.
5/ This New Limited Edition Halios Made in Collaboration with Topper Jewelers Is Gorgeous But It Sold Out In Less Than A Minute There are many microbrands in this world, but very few have as intense a following as Halios. Every single watch they put out sells out very fast and if you take a peek at their website you’ll see that they had to pause allocations in order to catch up with production. Their releases are slowing and demand is growing. So, whenever they announce a new watch, even if it is a 100 piece limited edition made in collaboration with Topper Jewelers out of Burlingame, CA, people look to see what will happen. And what happens is it sells out in lest than a minute.
It’s a new Universa, but it incorporates dial elements typically found in the Seaforth. The Universa has a 38mm stainless steel case that is mostly brushed, but has a classic polished chamfer along the lugs. The bezel-less design gives the watch an old-school, no nonsense sports watch vibe. It’s the dial, though, that makes this Universa special. It’s a crisp white with hands and hour markers that have been accented in black for maximum contrast. The layout is taken directly from the Seaforth, and includes the same thick, applied hour markers that give the dial an increased sense of depth. Hash marks on the minute scale alternate between blue, yellow, and green, representing natural elements found near Topper’s headquarters in Burlingame - the ocean, northern California sunshine, and giant redwood trees.
The fans want a new Halios so bad and the supply is so low, the watch, priced at an even $1,000, sold out in one minute.

The Holthinrichs Watches DECONSTRUCTED — Ushering In A New Era For The Dutch Atelier Any Holthinrichs piece is deceptively light for a mechanical watch due to the slim case and 3D-printed technique. The sides are seriously scalloped, while the sweeping lugs are cut away, skeletonized with the raw, unfinished steel visible on the inside. With the DECONSTRUCTED, we see Grade 5 titanium for the first time, which will make this a feather-light watch. The dial itself is intense in its layered appearance, displaying a focus on contrasts between frosted dark flat surfaces and hand-polished anglage. This is done in black rhodium, echoing the darker tone of titanium and creating an amphitheater with the Decon movement at center stage.

2023.05.24 14:00 dreftzg [Daily News] Bell & Ross Celebrates Elite French Air Force Unit With Gorgeous Blue Watch, Yema Updates Superman With Cool Green, Farr+Swit Is A Very 80s Video Game Watch And Union Glashütte Has A New Chrono
It's Wednesday and the French have come out in style today. If you enjoy these news updates, throw them an upvote so more people get to see them.
What's new
1/ Bell & Ross Celebrates Elite Unit Of French Air and Space Force 70th Anniversary With Colorful BR 03-92 Patrouille De France While the French brand Bell & Ross makes some very nice vintage-inspired watches, as well as somewhat avant-garde ones in their Urban line, they are primarily known for their blocky watches that resemble cockpit flight instruments. So, it comes as no shock that they have worked with French special forces, squadrons, astronauts, the French Naval Air Force or elite squads such as the GIGN and the RAID. So it comes as no surprise that in 2021 Bell & Ross announced it’s partnering with France’s precision aerobatics demonstration unit, the world-famous Patrouille de France. In order to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the elite unit, Bell & Ross is now releasing the limited edition BR 03-92 Patrouille de France.
As part of the 2021 deal, Bell & Ross produced two special watches for the unit. First was the BR 03 Type A with digital display, a specific request of the pilot, and the second was the BR 03-94 Patrouille de France Chronograph. The third special edition model has now been released and pairs traditional Bell & Ross codes with flamboyant French colours and unique design elements to celebrate 7 decades of precision aerobatics.
The special edition is based on the most classic B&R model, the BR 03-92. Also known as the instrument line, it comes in the signature case (the circle within a square) with 4 functional screws, directly modelled after vintage dashboard instruments. Measuring 42mm x 42mm, 10.40mm thick, the Patrouille de France version comes in a matte microblasted ceramic case. It also has one of the coolest casebacks, decorated with the silhouettes of the 5 aircraft that have flown since the creation of the Patrouille de France in 1953 – Thunderjet, Ouragan, Mystère IV, Fouga Magister and Alpha Jet.
The dial of this BR 03-92 Patrouille de France also pays tribute to the acrobatic patrol, with a particularly bright shade of blue, almost the same as the Alpha Jet of the Patrouille de France. The matte background is home to multiple highly contrasting white elements, such as the large luminous Arabic numerals and markers, as well as oversized white-SLN-coated hands. The insignia of this elite display team and the specific logo of its 70TH anniversary appear at the heart of this dial, which unfortunately still retains its date window…
Inside is the Calibre BR-CAL.302, a Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. The watch comes on two straps - a tone-on-tone leather strap with French stitching and a steel PVD-coated pin buckle, and a black synthetic canvas fabric strap.
Limited to 999 pieces, the Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Patrouille de France 70th Anniversary is now available for orders, with deliveries scheduled for mid-July 2023. It is priced at EUR 4,200.
2/ Yema Updates The Superman 500 With A Date And Gorgeous New Dials The French are on a tear. But that’s to be expected from Yema, who seem to release a new watch every few weeks. And each of their releases is just mighty fine. Yema is now announcing two new versions of the Superman 500, adding new colors and a date to the model initially introduced last year.
The Superman has been Yema’s star watch since it’s introduction in 1963 as basic skin diver that rivalled Rolex, Blancpain and Omega, but at a lower price. It was an instant hit, as it had great looks, 300 meter water resistance and an interesting bezel locking device. The reissued Superman 500 was an equal success for the brand.
The Yema Superman 500 upgraded the model and corrected some of its internal flaws. While keeping the design intact, Yema beefed up the specs with a revised bezel-locking system (an emblematic feature of the collection) and more precise adjustments. The watch was beefed up and is now rated to 500 meter depths and all the improvements made the watch water resistant to 30 meters even with the crown unscrewed.
Following the classic time-only and GMT models, it is now time for the third iteration, the Yema Superman 500 Dato. The date window is where you would expect it, at 3 o’clock. You can get it in two sizes, 39 or 41mm, and the Dato collection comes with two dials that are not available on the no-date models. There’s the strikingly vivid sandblasted white with black accents, or a semi-matte khaki green with beige-toned markers and hands. On both versions, the date disc matches the dial.
Inside, you won’t find a ETA or Miyota movement. Instead, the watch comes with their proprietary calibre YEMA2000, which delivers a 42h power reserve, a 4Hz frequency and has been adjusted in 4 positions for an accuracy of -10/+10 seconds/day. You can wear the watch on a steel bracelet or a black FKM rubber strap.
Available for pre-order from today, with deliveries scheduled for the end of June 2023, the Yema Superman 500 Dato will retail for EUR 1,249 on a steel bracelet and EUR 1,329 on an FKM rubber strap.
3/ The Farr + Swit Chrono Vice Edition Is Exactly What You Would Expect From An 80’s Future-Retro Affordable Watch - Tons Of Fun Just to save you some reading time, if you dig 80’s Future-Retro, video games of the era and disco noir color schemes and are looking to spend about $500 on a watch, just go buy the Farr + Swit Solar Chrono Vice Edition.
If you need to know more, here we go. Farr + Swit is a Chicago-based brand that’s very into the 80s. You see this instantly in the three-dimensional teal grid pattern that gives the feeling of racing West in an 80s video game, while a neon pink and yellow sun goes down. It’s a busy dial, but with a purpose and looking at it for some time, I imagine that there won’t be much issue with legibility.
You definitely won’t have issue with legibility at night. Click through to the article to see the watch at nigh. Farr + Swit is known for their fun lume applications on other models and they sure gave it their best here. Absolutley everything - the hands, markers, logo, chronograph hands, subdials, a teal ring outside the dial and even the date aperture are covered in fantastic Super-LumiNova C3 green Grade X EF.
The Solar Chrono case is mostly brushed, with a polished bezel that appears to be a separate piece. Although the bezel is not extremely thin, this watch is mostly dial. It also leads to the case looking a bit bigger visually than its 42mm diameter. Also, it’s 12.5mm thick, which is not bad when you consider everything that’s crammed inside.
As the name implies, the Solar Chrono is powered by a solar quartz chronograph and Farr + Swiss say it is a Seiko meca-quartz movement. They say it will run for six months after only five hours of sunlight. It has running seconds at 6 o’clock, and a 60-minute counter at 12 o’clock. The watch comes with two two quick-release StrapHabit straps - a teal FKM rubber strap and a black sailcloth strap with magenta accents.
The Farr + Swit Solar Chrono Vice Edition is limited to 85 units which will be numbered. They are now available for pre-order and are priced at $535 USD. Deliveries are expected in mid-June 2023.
4/ Union Glashütte Introduces The Noramis Chronograph Gaisbergrennen 2023, A Retro Panda Chrono With A Competitive Price Glashütte is an amazing place. The population of the german town is just under 6,700 people. And yet, there are 10 active watchmakers there at the moment. One of them is Union Glashütte, a slightly lesser known brand, but still more than capable to stand toe to toe with the bigger Glashütte boys. And in line with this is their retro-inspired chronograph with a panda dial known as the Noramis Chronograph Limited Edition Gaisbergrennen 2023.
The watch is named after the Gaisberg race, first organized by Baron Von Preuschen in 1929, as cars raced around Salzburg’s scenic mountain routes. It was Interrupted by the war, but resumed in 1952 until in 1969 a string of fatal accidents forced the organizers to close it down. It was revived in 2003 and the Union Glashütte’s chronograph was designed to measure elapsed times for the drivers. So it makes sense that the inspiration comes from 1960s and 1970s stopwatches with mushroom pushers, a panda dial and a pronounced domed sapphire crystal over the dial. The polished 100m water-resistant stainless steel case has a diameter of 42mm and a thickness of 14.5mm.
Union Glashütte is known for not going crazy with their prices. In order to keep the watches somewhat affordable, they don’t develop an entire in-house movement. Inside the watch is the UNG-27.S2 automatic movement, a cam-activated chronograph beating at 28,800vph, which is based on a modified Valjoux 7750. Yhe calibre has a beefed-up power reserve of 65 hours and is fitted with an anti-magnetic silicon hairspring. The rotor has cut-out letters forming the word UNION and is decorated with thick Glashütte stripes.
The watch comes on two straps - a dressy cognac-coloured calfskin strap and a traditional aerated black rally strap.
The Union Glashütte Noramis Chronograph Gaisbergrennen 2023 is a limited edition of 200 pieces and retails for EUR 3,600.

Watch Worthy - A look at an offbeat, less known watch you might actually like
The Peculiar Timeless HMS The HMS is a bit of an eyeful at a glance, with no clear focal point emerging between the ornate detailed structures that comprise the lugs, the case, and the dial, with each of those areas offering plenty of details to discover and appreciate. The most densely detailed area is the heart of the dial, which is open to reveal a bespoke center wheel that moves with the hour hand. This opening is surrounded by a guilloché section that dominates much of the dial real estate. The two sections are quite literally bridges with a horizontal bar that underpins the hand stack, lending further to the steam-punk vibes that emanate from the entire design.

2023.05.16 09:05 -Bonjour-- 2000 km road trip through Poland
A GPS is very recommendable in Poland, because the place names are signposted almost only in Polish.
Our first destination was in BRESLAU (Wroclaw), where we stayed in a modern hotel, a bit outside the center, but easily accessible on foot or by streetcar. Across from the hotel is the Sky Tower, built only in 2006-2013, with offices, apartments and stores, the tower is the second tallest building in Poland at 212 meters.
The Oder metropolis Wroclaw - also called "Venice of the North" - is the fourth largest city in Poland with 640,000 inhabitants. The city was once the richest trading city of the German East.Wroclaw was 70% destroyed during the 2nd World War. Reconstruction by Polish reconstructionists and craftsmen gave the city its present beautiful appearance and offers visitors a wide range of cultural and tourist attractions. The city of "100 bridges" was "European Capital of Culture" in 2016.
On the way from the hotel to the center we saw the music theater "Capitol", which was inaugurated only in September 2013. Then on one street we noticed two groups of figures cast in bronze. The group on one side of the street descends into the abyss to reappear on the other side of the street. The "Transition" groups 1977-2005 represent the symbol of the fall of communism and the rise to democracy.
The center of the city is the 175 x 212 m large market square (Rynek) onto which 11 streets flow. In the center of the square is the magnificent Old Town Hall, built in the 14th century in Gothic and Renaissance styles - a valuable architectural monument for Poland. The late Gothic south facade with elaborately designed windows is particularly beautiful. On the ornate central gable you can see an astronomical clock from 1580. Today the building houses a museum.
The market square is surrounded by magnificent renovated town houses. An imposing sight is the Elizabeth Church on the Rynek (Market Square) in Gothic style made of brick. The present three-nave basilica was built in the early 14th century. The church has almost 2000 seats and is one of the largest churches in Poland. The checkerboard tiled roof was created during the renovation in 1890-93. Fortunately, the church was only slightly damaged during World War 2. The tower was originally 130 m high, but it collapsed in 1529 due to storm and hail. In 1535 the new tower was built with "only" 86 m. Inside, the Baroque high altar from 1653 and the richly decorated choir stalls are particularly impressive. The two narrow houses next to the church are popularly called "Hansel and Gretel".
A square worth seeing is the Salt Market (Plac Solny) with the beautiful patrician houses. There, florists sell bouquets and arrangements in gorgeous colors. Numerous restaurants line the market square, e.g. the "Schwednitzer Cellar" (Piwnica Swidnicka) in the town hall or the brewery "Spiz", where beer has been brewed for 500 years and the food is plentiful and good.
It was not easy to find the market hall, which was built in Art Nouveau style at the beginning of the 20th century. But if you show on the map where "Hala Targowa" is, somehow "with your hands" you are told how to get there. At the market there were fruits and vegetables in abundance, with a conspicuous number of berry varieties. What was particularly striking was the large selection of grave wreaths, grave decorations, etc. The mostly Catholic inhabitants of Poland are often very devout, and therefore have a special way of dealing with their dead. The graves are decorated with elaborate wreaths and arrangements.
The city center includes not only the Old Town but also Sand Island and Cathedral Island. To go to the two islands, we got on the streetcar at the hotel and, with the help of locals, got off at the right place....On Sand Island (Wyspa Piasek) stands the mighty church of "Mary on the Sand", a brick Gothic building built in 1334-1425. The church was rebuilt after it was badly damaged in WW2. We then crossed the cast-iron Cathedral Bridge to reach the Cathedral Island (Mos Tumski). The Cathedral Island is the oldest part of Wroclaw, apart from the churches it is also the seat of the Archbishop and the clergy, and is thus the spiritual center of Wroclaw. First you come to the double church "To the Holy Cross", which is actually a triple church: namely Lower Church, Cross Church and Upper Church. In a privileged location directly above the Oder River is the Archbishop's Palace with its beautiful garden..
The most imposing building on the Cathedral Island is the Cathedral in brick Gothic style, also called the Cathedral "John the Baptist". A first church was built here already in the year 1000, the present cathedral is the fourth. The present three naves in the style of a basilica date from the 14th century, both towers from the 15th century. The cathedral was rebuilt after the heavy destruction in the 2nd World War after 1945. Inside the church, the sacristy and the Lady Chapel are particularly worth seeing. The cathedral has a total of 20 chapels. On the baroque altar you can see reliefs made of alabaster. After visiting the interior of the church, we took an old elevator in one of the towers to a viewing platform. From there you have a beautiful view of Wroclaw and the Oder River. The elevator is operated by an older man, if you want to go down again, you have to ring the bell
What do you do at 36° in the Oder metropolis Wroclaw? A boat tour on the Oder! The boat tours start every hour from the Sand Island (Wyspa Piasek) and take about 1 hour there and back. First, you pass Cathedral Island - which is actually not an island because of the 19th-century filling in of an arm of the Oder River - with beautiful views of the Holy Cross Church, the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. One passes the National Museum and various university buildings. From far away you can see the impressive blue Emperor's Bridge (Grunwaldzki Bridge). This steel bridge with two mighty granite piers was built in 1910. Fortunately, the banks of the Oder are still natural with bushes, trees and reeds. Very quickly you leave the houses behind. On one of the banks in the middle of nature we saw an accumulation of caravans - probably either Roma or dropouts.
On weekends, the boat goes up to Hala Slulecia (or Hala Ludwoa) - the Hall of the Century - a World Heritage Site. This building, erected in 1913, was the world's largest domed structure made of reinforced concrete at the time. A festival hall is located here, and exhibitions are held. The hall was built for the 100th anniversary of the liberation from Napoleonic rule. At that time it was the largest reinforced concrete dome in the world. It was used as a concert hall and a sports hall, exhibitions are held there. The hall is the center of the exhibition center. Adjacent to the hall is a monumental pergola, which also includes a small artificial lake. In the middle of it is the Wroclawska Fontanna (Fountain), where (especially in summer) modern sound-light-laser installations can be seen after dark. Also in 1913, the Japanese Garden was established on this site. In front of the hall you can see the "Steel Needle", which is about 100 meters high. This was erected in 1948 after the expulsion of the German inhabitants and the resettlement of Poles (many from Lviv in Ukraine) who had also been expelled from their homeland.
From Wroclaw we drove to WARSAW (Warszawa), where we booked into an art deco hotel in the center. After Wroclaw, Warsaw seems very "sober" at first. The city with its 1.7 million inhabitants is not only the capital - in 1596 the residence of Sigismund II was moved from Krakow to Warsaw - but the cultural, economic and political center of Poland. Warsaw is situated on both sides of the Vistula River, connected by numerous bridges. On the wide streets of the city is a busy car traffic. Warsaw is still experiencing a construction boom, with many modern buildings and skyscrapers being built. But there are also prefabricated quarters and monumental buildings of Stalinist architecture.
During World War II, there was severe suffering especially in this city: the Polish population was oppressed by the Nazis, the Jews were first sent to the ghetto or were immediately murdered in Auschwitz, as were numerous Polish intellectuals. Especially after the Warsaw Uprising on August 1, 1944, 90% of the city was systematically destroyed by the Nazis.Reconstruction was a masterstroke, and Warsaw is now the most important commercial and economic center in Central and Eastern Europe. In the center of the city dominates the 230 m building "Palace of Culture and Science", despite many skyscrapers around it still the tallest building in Poland with 42 floors, 3288 rooms and almost 900,000 cubic meters of enclosed space . The monstrous building - completed in 1955 - was an official gift from Stalin and the Soviet Union to the Polish people. But the Poles rather saw it as an unloved symbol of power of the Russians for almost 45 years of oppression and called it "Stalin's thorn". Nowadays, this building is nevertheless considered a landmark of the city.
In the Culture Palace there are the Tourist Information, theaters, cinemas, exhibition rooms and the Museum of Technology. On the 30th floor is an observation deck, from where you have a beautiful view of Warsaw in good weather. Since 2000, the building has the world's highest tower clock, the hands are about 6 meters long. Across the street is the city's main train station and next to it, under a glass dome, is the new shopping center "Golden Terraces" with 239 stores, including all the world's famous labels."Stare Miasto" is the oldest part of the city, dating back to the 13th century, and the most important sight of Warsaw. The richest citizens lived here because they were protected by the city walls. The Old Town was 90% destroyed in the 2nd World War, most of the buildings have been reconstructed, the reconstruction took many decades (since 1980 Unesco World Heritage Site).
The "Nowy Swiat" is the Warsaw promenade with restaurants and stores - full of life with many passers-by. There we ate our first "Pierogi" in a small restaurant. The "Nowy Swiat" goes over into the "Krakowskie Przedmiescie", on this street is also the university, founded in 1816, nowadays consisting of many buildings, as it is the largest educational institution in Poland with about 260,000 students. One of the many university buildings is the former Potkanski Palace. Also on this street is the Church of St. Joseph, built in the mid-18th century.
On the "Krakowski Przedmiescie" there is also the Presidential Palace (since 1994). This magnificent building is also called "Palais Radziwill", after one of the owners of this building. The beginning of construction was in 1643, but it was frequently rebuilt. The palace remained in private ownership for a long time. The equestrian statue in front of it depicts Prince Jozef Poniatowski (1763-1813), commander-in-chief of the Polish army and marshal of France, who specifically supported Polish independence. Warsaw has especially many monuments, on this street you can see, among others, the monument to the Polish poet of Romanticism Adam Mickiewicz. A famous building is the Bristol Hotel, built in 1900, always a meeting place of important guests in the capital.
Then, finally, you come to the Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy) with the 22-meter-high Sigismund Column. King Sigismund made a special effort to make Warsaw the capital of Poland. The Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski) was the official seat of Polish kings since the end of the 16th century. The castle with its plain facade was also rebuilt with donations from the population after the heavy damages during the 2nd World War. Inside, the Marble Room and the Senator's Hall are the most beautiful rooms. In the castle garden we had the opportunity to have a look at the Vistula River, at least from a distance. Around the castle square there are numerous restaurants and cafes. In the middle of the square there is a bronze sculpture with Warsaw's coat of arms. This square was the center of city life from the 13th to the 19th century. The completely destroyed burgher houses with their three-striped facades, gabled roofs and colorful wall decorations were rebuilt in the 1950s in keeping with their style.
Hop-on hop-off buses in Warsaw run only hourly, and then - because of traffic congestion - they are not very punctual. So you would have to allow an hour for a stop - so one day would hardly be enough. So we had no choice but to use this bus for a city tour without getting off, to at least get an overview of the city and its sights. We passed the Alexander Church, built in 1818-25 on the model of the Roman Pantheon. This church building was realized for the visit of Tsar Alexander I because of the newly founded Kingdom of Poland. The Wisniowiecki Palace on Bankowy Square was built in the Italian Renaissance style from 1825-1830 and was privately owned for many years. Today it houses the city administration and the official residence of the mayor. Impressive from the bus was the old city wall, the construction of which began in the 14th century and lasted over 200 years, and a large part of which survived the 2nd World War. The bus passed the Presidential Palace, for many years private property. Since 1994 it has been the official residence of the Polish president.
At the time of the Nazi invasion in World War 2, there were about 350,000 Jews living in Warsaw, which was one third of the population, west of the Old and New Towns. This area later formed the ghetto when all Jews had to move here. In November 1944, a wall was erected, thus sealing off the ghetto from the rest of the city. Almost half a million people had to live here under terrible living conditions (epidemics, hunger, arbitrariness). From 1942, most of the inhabitants were taken from the Umschlagplatz (a memorial wall was erected here in 1988) to one of the concentration camps.
The Monument to the Ghetto Heroes was unveiled on the 5th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Jewish Uprising in April 1948. Willy Brandt's genuflection on the occasion of his visit to Poland in December 1970 also took place here. Next to it is the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
We also passed the monument to the "Warsaw Uprising of 1944". After the bus passed the new large shopping mall "Arkadia", we also passed the oldest Catholic cemetery "Cmentarz Powazkowski", which has existed for 200 years, where some of the most famous Poles rest, and then the Jewish cemetery from 1806. Here there are about 200,000 graves on an area of about 33 hectares. This cemetery was hardly damaged in the 2nd World War.
The Monument to the Poles who died and were murdered in the East, to Poles deported to forced camps in Siberia and to the victims of Katyn was erected in 1995.
In retrospect, Warsaw surprised us in a positive way. It is a lively city with many young people.
Our trip continued in the direction of Masuria.
The region of Mazury in the northeastern part of Poland borders on the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, the southern part is in the former East Prussia. It is the land of 3000 lakes, in the middle of the large lake plateaus lie the towns of Gizycko and Mikolajki.
In the untouched nature there is a unique flora and fauna: mixed forests, clear lakes, numerous rivers and canals, ponds and swamps, many species of birds and species-rich wild meadows with rare plants.
The history of Masuria is similar to that of many border regions of Europe, influenced by different ethnic groups and cultures. From the 9th to the 14th/15th century, pagan Pruzes lived here. With the foundation of the Teutonic Order, the bloody crusades against this people began.
Craftsmen and merchants from Germany and Holland settled here. In the middle of the 16th century came the Reformation. Masuria suffered from the Nordic Wars and the plague. Since 1870 there was an increased Germanization. With the 2nd World War and especially after it began the expulsion and persecution of the local population, and other expellees arrived from the Polish Eastern territories, Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania.
After a good three-hour drive from Warsaw - partly highway - we arrived in Olsztyn (ALLENSTEIN) around noon. With a lot of traffic on the normal roads, we sometimes were overtaken "criminally".
Allenstein has about 175,000 inhabitants, the capital of Masuria and Warmia is also the cultural and economic center. The city is embedded in a charming landscape with 15 lakes, the river Lyna and many small canals. The largest lake with 412 ha is the so-called city lake "Jezioro Ukiel".
The center of the city is the picturesque Rynek with baroque town houses, arcades, numerous cafes and beer gardens. The High Gate (Brama Wysoka), built in 1378, was at times an armory and prison. This is the only preserved of the original three gates - the town's landmark. Nowadays there is a simple hostel there. The extensively renovated 14th century Order Castle an is the historical core of today's town. From 1516-21 Nicolaus Copernicus was the administrator of the cathedral chapter here, and he defended the town against the Knights of the Teutonic Order in 1521. Some exhibition rooms commemorate the famous astronomer. The complex has been accessible from the city only since the middle of the 18th century. North of the old town is the Lutheran Church built in 1877 and the Jacobi Cathedral built at the end of the 14th century ,
We continued to NIKOLAIKEN (Mikolajki), originally a small fishing village, now a well-known vacation resort in Masuria. our hotel is located directly on Lake Nikolaiken, very idyllic and quiet.Nikolaik is a small town with only 3800 inhabitants, but nevertheless it seems to be the "sailing capital" of Masuria. Water sports are possible on three lakes around Nikolaik: Lake Nikolaik (Jez Mikolajski), Lake Spirding (Jez Smiendwy) and Lake Talty (Jez Talty). The town is a base of the "White Fleet" and an important water sports center, which can be seen in the marina with many boats. There are numerous hotels, guesthouses and apartments in all price ranges, as well as camping sites. On the lake promenade and around the market square with its fountain you can find stores, restaurants and cafes. Boat tours are offered on the lake, but only in good weather and if enough people want to go.
The GPS was programmed to get to Lötzen (Gizycko), because the roads are sometimes not signposted or only in Polish. We passed through small villages with old farmhouses and drive on small roads with avenues of trees, mostly lime trees - where else can you find something like that? It is said that Masuria is rich in landscape but poor in economy.
The place LÖTZEN between Lake Löwentin (Niegocin) and Lake Mauersee (Mamry) is a popular place for sailors. GIZYCKO - also called the summer capital of Poland - is the biggest town in the middle of the Masurian lakes. There are 100 lakes all around, partly connected by canals. So the best conditions for water sports - sailors, windsurfers, canoeists, etc. Of course there are also many hiking trails.
From Nikolaiken we went on to ELBING (Elblag). Our GPS sent us quasi "through field, forest and meadows". The streets were partly in bad condition, thereby quite narrow, fortunately hardly traffic. But on the other hand it was so that we could really enjoy this beautiful area: the forests with birches and oaks, the linden avenues, now and then a small lake and tiny villages - it was really somehow "between nowhere and nowhere"...
The city of Elblag has 130,000 inhabitants, it is located not far from the Vistula Lagoon. The Vistula Lagoon is separated from the Gdansk Bay by the Vistula Spit. As early as 1237 the Crusaders established a fortified settlement here. Elblag - as it was called then - received the town charter in 1246 and became one of the Hanseatic towns on the Baltic Sea. The city was the second largest in East Prussia, and experienced an economic boom in the 19th century through tobacco cultivation, as well as ship and locomotive building.
During World War 2, Elblag was completely destroyed, and reconstruction is still ongoing. There are only a few restored streets and still many gaps between buildings. The new buildings must be architecturally adapted to the old style. Some of the streets and alleys in the old town are still in poor condition, with large puddles forming everywhere during heavy rain. On the other hand, one can see the upswing in the number of new restaurants, all of which are run by young people.
In the course of the last few years, more industry has settled here again: Machine and turbine construction, clothing, wood and food industries. Also important is the inland port on the Oberland Canal south of the city, from where ships also sail to the Vistula Lagoon and on to Kaliningrad.
Our hotel is also located in the historical core of the city in a beautiful reconstructed burgher house. From the middle of the 16th century the kings of Poland, Sweden and Prussia as well as the Russian tsar stayed here. In the "Stary Rynek" you can find restaurants and stores as well as the town hall.
A landmark in the city is the massive Gothic Church of St. Nicholas from the 13th century with its 96 m high tower. The church got its name after the patron saint of sailors. The interior of the church is well worth seeing with beautiful colorful windows, the Renaissance pulpit, the bronze baptismal font and the triptych from 1510.
Not to be overlooked is the Market Tower (Brama argowa), a remnant of the former city wall. The tourist information office is located there on the upper floor. In the summer, various events are also held in the tower. From the tower we saw the mighty former St. Mary's Church, built by Dominican monks, which today houses a very famous contemporary gallery.
Elblag is also famous for the Upperland Canal, which runs 82 km from here to Ostróda. The canal from the 19th century connects several lakes, and the height difference of 99 m is overcome with locks. Ships are loaded onto rail cars and transported by elevator to the next body of water. The trip takes a total of 11 hours.
FRAUENBURG (Frombork) - located on the Vistula Lagoon - received its town charter in 1310, it is only about 20 km from the Russian border and about 70 km from Kaliningrad. At the beginning of the 17th century, a commercial port was built, but it could not compete with the port of the Hanseatic city of Elblag. So only a landing place for fishing boats remained.
This town became famous mainly because of Nicolaus Copernicus. The astronomer lived here from 1517 until his death on May 24, 1593. For a long time it was not clear whether Copernicus was actually buried in the cathedral. It was not until 2005 that archaeologists found his remains under a floor slab during excavations there. A tomb was erected in the cathedral in honor of the famous astronomer.
in the bell tower opposite the Gothic cathedral on the cathedral hill there is a planetarium with Foucalt's pendulum. The 46.5 kg sphere hangs from a 28 m long steel cable. Copernicus developed the heliocentric - the sun is the center of the earth - theory, which states that the earth revolves around the sun once a year, and that day and night occur because the earth revolves around its own axis. These teachings of Copernicus were widely accepted over the years, including by Galileo. The latter was condemned as a heretic because he could not produce any proof, and later publicly recanted. It was not until 1851 that the Frenchman Foucault demonstrated in Paris the correctness of Copernicus' theory of the earth's rotation with a freely swinging pendulum. A heavy ball on a long rope traveled over the ground - but it is the ground itself that is rotating.
You can climb up the bell tower and from there you have a beautiful view - depending on the weather - of the small town of Frombork, the Vistula Lagoon and, of course, especially the cathedral. Next to the massive baroque bell tower you can see the small fortified tower, the oldest part of the fortification ring, here was supposedly the study and observatory of Copernicus.
The Cathedral Hill (Wzgorze Katedralne) is surrounded by a defensive wall and has a large main gate. The Bishop's Palace with the Copernicus Museum is also worth seeing.
Many died in the battle of Tannenberg 1410, but the Marienburg could be held. After political and economic crises and a revolt of the subjects, Marienburg Castle went to the Polish king Casimir Jagello in 1457. For three centuries alternately ruled here.
The cathedral with the eight-bay nave was built on the so-called Cathedral Hill from 1329-1388 and was repeatedly expanded and rebuilt over time. It is remarkable that the cathedral has only four ornamental towers at the corners. The rich interior decoration of the cathedral from different centuries is a mix of Baroque and Rococo styles.
The ceiling of the nave looks like a star vault. On the side you can see the beautiful old main altar "Mother of God with Child". The new late Baroque main altar is made of black marble. To the left and right of the nave are the many altars. Also magnificent is the organ from 1684 and the altar of St. Anne.
Almost half a million people tried to escape across the Vistula Lagoon at the end of World War II, many drowned, others died in ice and snow. Outside the park there has been a memorial stone for the 30,000 victims of this escape for several years.
Unfortunately, the weather became worse and worse, it started to rain heavily. Nevertheless, we took a look at the city of Frombork, which was 80% destroyed after WW2. In the small harbor the boats were bobbing around. And when I wanted to take a look at the Frische Haff, I got dripping wet - despite my umbrella.
From Elblag we drove in the direction of Gdansk, but on the way we made a stop at the world-famous Marienburg. From Elblag we did not have far to the MARIENBURG (Malbork). When asked, we were told that the Marienburg has about 500,000 visitors a year.
Marienburg (Malbork) - a work of art of fortified and residential architecture of the late Middle Ages - is considered to be the largest brick work built by man. The world's largest Gothic castle complex occupies an area of about 21 hectares, the volume of the buildings totals over 250,000 cubic meters. The castle is one of the most impressive buildings I have seen.
First you arrive in the bustling city of Marienburg (Malbork) with about 39,000 inhabitants, which was founded as early as the 13th century. From the center you can see the mighty castle complex from afar: the Marienburg of the Teutonic Knights of the Teutonic Order, which is of course a Unesco World Heritage Site. The town and the castle are situated on the Nogat River, an estuary of the Vistula.
Marienburg Castle became the most important part of the German Order's fortification system in Prussia. In 1300 the castle became the seat of the Grand Masters and was massively expanded. In the 14th century it took the form of a three-part fortification: the high castle (monastery), the middle castle (seat of the Grand Master) and the outer castle (farm buildings). Marienburg became the diplomatic, military, economic and religious center. Knights from many European countries gathered here for banquets and tournaments.
The army of the Order was defeated by the Polish-Lithuanian forces in the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410. The Polish and Prussian rulers ruled here alternately. After the first partition of Poland in 1772 the fortress went to Prussia. It was not until 1945 that Mariánské Lázn? became Polish again.
In the last phase of the Second World War, Mariánské Lázn? suffered severe destruction and was rebuilt from the ruins over time. The castle continues to be the subject of intensive restoration work. Malbork became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
Nowadays, the fortress on the Nogat River belongs to the Malbork Castle Museum, which was founded in 1961. The 20-hectare castle complex is surrounded by mighty walls and moats. The most commonly used building material was ceramic products - bricks and ceramic details made of clay. The foundations of the castle as well as the gate portals and door frames - especially exposed to enemy attacks - were built of granite - about 4500 cubic meters of granite were needed. All the material was brought by oxcarts. Foundations had to be dug, water conditions had to be regulated, bricks and roof tiles had to be baked, timber had to be brought in and processed, metals had to be smelted and glass and other building materials had to be produced. The many people who worked here had to be fed and housed. It was a huge undertaking for that time.
In the north, the Marienburg is surrounded by the outer castle, which occupies the largest area. Here there were once stables, storehouses, workshops and apartments for servants. The largest complex is the so-called Karwan, which used to be a coach depot. After extensive conservation work, it now houses a conference room and the museum library, and on the first floor a beautiful medieval hall.
The main gate for the eastern entrance to the outer castle is flanked by two towers. The Lower Rose House and the tower above the bakery, together with the main gate and the karwan, belonged to the eastern defensive wall of the outer castle designed in the 14th century.
The economic ensemble with the Laurentius Chapel, the former firmarie for servants and the bath tower was created during a castle extension at the end of the 14th century. This complex was destroyed in the 2nd World War and rebuilt only in recent years. Today it houses a hotel with a restaurant.
Bullets and cannon barrels were cast in the 14th century foundry. In different phases of the castle expansion, the Buttermilk Tower was built in 1330-40 and the Square Tower in 1310-1311. The construction of the representative middle castle started in 1309.
The central castle is accessed via a drawbridge and a system of gates. First you pass through a gate with a portcullis and over a weir bridge, then there is a system of four gates and a portcullis, which were supposed to block the access to the castle as well as protect the castle courtyard from attackers.
The buildings are grouped around a large rectangular courtyard. The courtyard leads to the Grand Master's Palace, a representative building in the form of a tower with the Great Remter. In front of the Remter there is a staircase, so that the Grand Masters could go directly from their chambers to this hall. Here banquets were held for knights who had taken part in the campaigns against the pagans. On the first floor there is the chapter house and rooms that were used as chanceries.
In the Middle Ages, in the small courtyard in front of the Great Remter, there were entrances to the most important rooms of the representative complex: St. Catherine's Chapel, the Grand Master's chambers and the main entrance to the Great Remter.
After the renovation, the palace rooms can be admired again, because especially the Summer and Winter Remter in the Gothic style with large rectangular windows and magnificent vaulting were considered the most beautiful ceremonial rooms in all of Europe at the end of the 14th century. The renovation works were long and costly.
In the north wing were the living and working rooms for the grand commander, as well as a hospital and old people's home for the knights. Today the working rooms for the castle museum are located here. In the western part there was the dining room, kitchen and pantry. In some of the halls there are collections of utilitarian art from the Polish period. On the first floor there were, among others, a bathhouse and sickrooms.
The east wing was used as a guest room wing in the Middle Ages, there were large and small guest rooms and a guest chapel. In the eastern wing there is the halberd hall. Exhibits and items from amber collections are displayed here, as well as items made of 17th and 18th century amber from Gdansk and Königsberg workshops. There are also collections of porcelain, period furniture and weapons.
in the southern part, on 2 floors, there are exhibitions of military objects, including medieval armor and swords. In one room you can see a modern collection of weapons. Inlaid firearms - duelling pistols and hunting rifles - are displayed in showcases.
To the south of the Middle Castle is the High Castle, connected by two oak bridges. The entrance gate to the High Castle is the oldest in the whole castle. The quadrangular courtyard is surrounded by two-story Gothic cloisters, from here doors lead to almost all rooms in this part of the fortress. In the center of the courtyard there is a fountain.
The square four-winged high castle is the oldest part of the castle. On the first floor there are economic rooms. In the west wing you can see huge oak elements for the windmill drive. In front of the entrance to the kitchen are typical millstones for grinding pearl barley. The kitchen and bakery are located in the west wing. There is an elevator here for transporting food directly to the dining room. Next to the stove and flue you can see an exhibition of historical kitchen utensils and crockery.
On the upper floor were the most important rooms for the convent and religious state - the Chapter House, St. Mary's Church and the Great Remter. In the latter, up to 400 guests could be entertained, it was one of the largest halls in Europe at that time.
In the Chapter House on the 1st floor the Grand Masters were elected and all important decisions were made. On the walls there are benches for the participants of these meetings.
The dormitories - dormitories of the knights - were located in the south and east wings. A long corridor leads to the dansker - toilet facility of the castle built above the Nogat River in a tower above running water. In earlier times, the water flowing underneath here flushed all sewage into the Nogat. In the south and east wings there are more dormitories and an exhibition of medieval exhibits - the most precious the altar from 1504 - from the destroyed castle church,
Further upstairs is the remter with a cross-ribbed vault on seven pillars and large ogival windows. Worth seeing is the medieval tiled floor with various motifs, the chimney frieze and the painting "The Last Supper". Another large room is the convent hall.
On the second floor there is the convent room (dining and meeting room). On the first floor you can reach the "Golden Gate", a ceramic portal from the end of the 13th century, which leads to St. Mary's Church. This church was renovated only in the last few years. The choir stalls and the wooden high altar are parts from the Middle Ages.
Before leaving the north wing, we enjoy the beautiful view of the Great Werder and the Nogat River from the tower. We come to the St. Anne's burial chapel, where the Grand Masters were buried.
The east terrace used to serve as a cemetery for the friars. On the south terrace the Grand Masters had their resting place and on the west terrace the friars. A spiral staircase leads from the high castle to the bed of the dry moat. The Pfaffenturm was once the oldest Dansker and later living quarters for the priests who served in the castle church. The east and west terraces were once cemeteries for the friars, and the south terrace was a resting place for the Grand Masters.
We left the castle through the Nikolaus Gate and admired once again the facade of the Grand Master's Palace made of stones and bricks. A pedestrian bridge leads over the Nogat River.
After these overwhelming impressions we sat down for the first time in the garden of the small restaurant on the north side and had a drink before we continue our journey to Gdansk.
Actually, there is no way to describe the magnificent Marienburg - you have to see it
