I'm F[27]. I've been dating for what feels like forever. I've dated men and women who wanted me pregnant yesterday, and men and women who never want to have children. I have no idea how marriage is more of a commitment than children, but whatever.
TW: I was put into a seriously drastic/dangerous situation a few months ago. My former boyfriend of 8 months beat me severely. He never laid a hand on me prior. I'd caught him cheating. I'm still dealing with chronic pain from this event. It is affecting every aspect of my life. He had wanted me pregnant ASAP and always talked about it. I hated it, but he'd rub my tummy and say, "I think my son is growing in there finally." He already had a daughter, and he was a great dad from what I'd seen. I was ready to marry and have kids with him. He's in jail for a year and a half now.
I had nowhere to go and very little money. I had finally gotten my bachelor's degree, but because I was helping my family out, I had no means to take care of myself. I reached out to my high school ex-boyfriend. We hadn't spoken in 8 years after my family moved. We had been together for 2.5 years. Our only contact was him donating to my father's gofundme when he passed less than 2 years ago. I'd been thinking of him ever since.
This man dropped everything to come rescue me. He saved me from hell. He drove 16 hours to help me move, and we drove back to his place. I've been living with him for several months now. It's been a dream come true. It's like we've picked up right where we left off. I still know and understand his faults and imperfections, and he mine. He's taking care of my dogs, he makes them dinner, and he's been smothering them with love. We split household chores evenly, communicate very well, etc. He's barely dated since we broke up. He has his own studio in his home, and several songs are about me. Everything feels so different with him. His words are genuine, not made up fluff used to manipulate me. We have the same views on almost everything. He dislikes Joe Rogan, Andrew Tate, etc. He has a very healthy relationship with women and is very kind to his mother and sister.
He's always had a dislike for children, that hasn't changed. The topic finally came up. I told him I don't need children to feel fulfilled. That if I was told I was infertile, I wouldn't be devastated. He bashfully said he kinda wishes I was infertile. I would have his kids in an instant, but I feel so much relief that we can agree on not having children.
I never understood where children would fit into my life. I'm trying to get my career going. I've longed to be independent for my entire life. If I had kids, I'd certainly need time off. Childcare is expensive. Would I have to stay home for a few years? This would crush any hopes I have of being financially stable. Of finally living and not just getting by. I've never been able to live my life for myself. I'm always taking care of someone. Then there's school and after-school activities. How do you get to sleep, do things you love, have a fulfilling sex life? Where is there time in the day if you decide to have children?
I feel so much relief. I'm more than positive him and I are going to work out long-term. I know that's wishful thinking, I know it's naive, but I have a strong feeling about it. If it doesn't work out, I know I'll be okay, too.

This is more of a moral dilemma for me. I (29f) and spouse (32m) aren’t actually married. We do have a 1yr old together; so for the sake of the story, we’re common law married.
Spouse had 2 older sisters; one passed, and the other had an aneurism and will forever be someone’s dependent. His dad passed away when he was a teen.
Before we met, him and his mom went half on a house for him. He bought a fixer upper. It was just him at the time, so why not? Well not the handy man type. He has that view of, “we’ll pay a professional.” But also, “I don’t have money like that.” Thank goodness his mom doesn’t have that view.
Since having the babe, MIL has spent thousands already fixing things for the safety of babe. She did ask once if my family will help. She doesn’t particularly mind paying for things, since spouse is her power of attorney, everything is for him and will go to him. And babe is her only grandchild. She just wants her son to be more.. able to do for himself. Also, because it’s on MIL dime, I’ve been super modest on the upgrades. I talked to my each of my parents (separated) about it.
While dating, we fought like people do, and his go to was to threaten to kick me out of his house. Well with in his right. I just made it a home, that’s all, right? (Eye roll) I did move out once for a year, and that’s when we ended up pregnant. We go to therapy, and have only had the 1 breakup since we started dating in 2019.
Well because of that history, my parents don’t want to contribute to anything relating his house, unless I’m on the deed. My dad now owns his own business, and has been flaunting money, which makes me feel even more guilty about not helping to update the house I am living in and raise my child in.
I am a SAHM right now. So I’m pretty out of the loop when it comes to money lately.

Long version :
History : Myself (33) and Ex (29) had been together for 8 years. We have a toddler. I’ve had a rough going for the last 3 years. Both parents passed almost back to back and some other issues at work. My ex knew all this and seemed supportive when I mentioned I’d like things to be better before we get married.
Current : Through most of this year she has been distant and I told her as such. She told me she is busy with xxx and I went with it. 2 months back I noticed she had installed Bumble on your phone, I asked her what that’s about and she told me she was still looking to make friends as she isn’t from around my county.
A month ago a work colleague messaged to advise me that she had seen my ex on Bumble albeit on the Dating side. I asked him for screenshots and he obliged. I asked her and showed her the pictures etc and she denied everything but didn’t want to show me her phone.
I had a chance to unlock the phone and check myself and saw that she’d been speaking to guys and had met 2. I did not immediately approach her but rather went to lawyers around what would happen with my son. Sorted that and sent the pictures to her Mother and herself and told them it was over. I haven’t even flirted for such a long time, and lately, during those boring lunches where people just talk about heiresses’ dogs’ illnesses (a Pomeranian dog shares all her illnesses with her owner) or gossip about some technocrat who has a limp and who may be cheating on his partner, and while rice with cod is served, I am asked “darling, are you dating yet?”. No, I am not, and here I am, mostly because dating apps are too dull – unfortunately the odds of being flashed by a Jewish 19 year-old from Manchester is smaller on these things, though sometimes you might have some luck and end up being insulted randomly by a Portuguese girl, who is visiting her uncle.
I do have names, and surnames, and I was born in a big city in Brazil. My sister used to describe our childhood address as “a building with cars and trees and buildings”, which is a rather good description of much of the city. For a while I wanted to join the seminary but after having to face the fact that this was an inadequate career choice considering I didn’t believe in God and had always found masses to be awfully boring (though fascinating at times – the priest at my childhood church used to go on long rants about things, of which there are many) often turning my back to see the watch, and so I chose the next best thing: I am studying sociology, which involves, in many ways, taking a vow of poverty. I also work at a small online newspaper so I am well informed on sub celebrities and local occurrences such as babies heroically rescued by policemen after choking on the thing babies eat. And yes, I write poetry sometimes.
I am fascinated fairly often by everything, or many things, at least so you won’t be bored. These last days I ended up reading a lot of things about Egypt after reading about Ottoman chief eunuchs being exiled to Cairo after their tenure. In general, I really enjoy the humanities. I follow politics keenly – in fact, there is some chance I might have some thoughts on your country’s politics – and I’d say I am on the centre-left – pro-choice, in favour of a robust welfare state, LGBTQ+ rights, affirmative action. If you know about Brazilian politics, I voted for Marina and Haddad in 2018 (the voting age here is 16), and Lula last year.

Besides poetry, I have often thought about writing a novel, but this seems like too much work – and it seems that it would be arrogant of me to write a novel having lived this little, though it wouldn't be uncommon. You avoid conflict and unnecessary arguments, but love to participate in good conversations. I have been considering applying to a PhD program in the U.S. after finishing my undergrad here in Brazil. My family does want me to go into their business, which is related to politics. I've run into a situation that I believe needs to be addressed, I'm just not sure what would be the most effective. I'm just really uncomfortable with the information I'm sharing, and so is my husband.
Okay, so I met this girl my sophomore year of high school after transferring to her school (i was 15 then, almost 30 now). We hit it off as friends well for the first few days and then she found out a particular boy she was once involved with was interested in me. The whole switch flipped. Which was fine. Until her mom's best friend became my legal guardian and we were forced to be around each other on a regular basis. I eventually moved again, the boy was no longer in either of our pictures. Well, I moved back my senior year and she had the car I told her I wanted and the tattoo I told her I wanted. I stayed away from her because, obviously. Anyways, I graduate, don't see her for several years, and start dating someone else. Turns out, she's super close to his mom and has turned her on me before I can even meet her. That's the last I've heard of this girl. I haven't seen her in 12 years, haven't heard anything about her in 8 years. But, a couple of days ago she popped up while scrolling Facebook and I got curious. This girl NOW has a 2 year old son with my husband's name (we've been together over 6 years) and is living in the same town as us, over 3 hours from the town she's from. Am I paranoid? These things can't all be coincidences... what advice do y'all have to help protect us from that? I feel as if now that I know this new information, it's just going to pull her closer, and, no thank you. Any help is appreciated. ❤️
