2023.06.06 13:33 firesidehats Accelerated BSIT/MSIT: Am I setting myself for success? Any feedback/advice for me?
| Hello! I wanted some feedback/general advice if possible. I’m going to be going for the accelerated BSIT to MSIT program at WGU. I have an AAS at a community college that is a part of their transfer partner program and while it wasn’t an IT-related AAS, it should cover all the general education courses. I also have the credit-equivalent of a Bachelor’s from a university but none of the courses were IT related so I figured those won’t transfer. Before I decided that I would be going to WGU, I coincidentally took the Google IT Support cert on Coursera and was delighted to see that it was accepted as a transfer credit. Through the American Dream Academy I understand that you can take the Google Data Analytics cert, the Front-End Web Developer cert, and the Google UX Design cert all on Coursera, through the ADA, and it should transfer to WGU according to their transfer guidelines. I'm leaning towards Coursera as much as possible because they're really easy for me to handle/interact with at my current IT/warehouse job. Here’s what I have so far for my planned credits I’ll be transferring in. https://preview.redd.it/rse3gjrhvd4b1.jpg?width=1152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db1ff5e8e544180d1a0c69112073eae29287d778 I know there are sites such as study.com and Sophia, but I was looking for general feedback, stories of successful transfer plans, any advice overall so I can best prepare myself prior to starting the enrollment process. To be honest, I'm getting a little overwhelmed by all the choices. I overall know how WGU works as I have family/friends who have graduated or are enrolled there but no one I know has experience transferring an AAS. Thanks in advanced! submitted by firesidehats to WGUIT [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 13:15 NightmareChameleon New War, Old Iron (4) (Reupload)
A few folks reported last night's upload as turning up blank, likely due to a bug on reddit's end, so we're having another try with it. Let me know if this does or doesn't fix things. Who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned M1? The use of 1200 millimeter shells serves no strategic purpose for my opening and, tactically speaking, places me at a slight disadvantage than had I used any one of my other, more potent weapons.
Mmhmm, they do have their downsides. According to my weapon subsystem computer, I must now wait 4.421 seconds for the shells to traverse the distance between myself and my enemy. Such a stretch of time is, of course, a wholly inconsequential blip whose passing is less significant than the tiniest mote of dust in the vast and boundless lifespan of the universe in all considerable scenarios.
All considerable scenarios, of course, except for the possibility that one might find themselves under the effects of several time-dilating performance enhancement drugs.
Which I am.
I
very much so am.
Of course, I'm nothing if not patient. To occupy the interval we find ourselves waiting, allow me now a brief tangent to preach the gospel of the combined 1200mm turret, targeting computer, and ordnance inventory computer, an old self-contained weapon system that bears the simple designation of “M1”:
The most foundational concept one must grasp about the M1 is that it is not an effective weapon as a simple matter of scale. While exceptions do exist, the simple nature of space means that larger warships face a rather generous economy of scale with regards to one’s ability to outgun and outweather any smaller adversaries. As is only natural, I am the most resplendent paradigm of this law, large enough to sit comfortably on the edge of what can be considered a planet and well-armored enough to ram one and win.
Ah, but you already knew that, didn’t you? Unlike the M1, one would be remiss not to both know of and be thinking about me constantly. I can say with full confidence that I practice what I preach, but once again I do digress.
As to be expected from a weapon originating in a period of time in which humanity’s warships were several orders of magnitude smaller than myself, these old holdovers certainly wear their years.
The M1 is not a good weapon system. Everything about it, down to the targeting computer’s ability to account for gravity-induced bullet drop and atmospheric drag, reflects its crude nature as something better suited for ancient oceanic warfare than space. The materials used in the gun barrels are impure, molecularly inconsistent alloys, the computer boards large and demanding. Its autoloaders are finicky and prone to jamming, and many of the targeting solutions fail to account for some of the more intricate corner cases one must account for in space combat.
In a perfect example of their obsolescence, we still have 2.721 seconds until the shells are expected to reach the enemy ships. Had I used my secondary armaments, a pair of megaMAC cannons that fire projectiles with diameters to rival cities, I would not have been able to complete a single sentence before the near luminal bolts would reduce the tightly bunched enemy crafts into little more than atomic smudges with the sheer kinetic energy they convey.
I have not fired my megaMAC cannons, however. I have fired my 1200mm multi-purpose M1s. This is because, for all their flaws, they are good weapons.
A weapon does not have a service life spanning multiple thousands of years without merit. As with similarly archaic, yet still used arms (such as the veritable M1, the timeless M1, and, of course, the M2), it has not survived for lack of redeeming qualities.
As a consequence of its age, there exists a truly staggering variety of ordnance that can be crammed into the M1’s barrels and lobbed at one’s enemies, all of which have been carefully cataloged in my mat-fab schematics to be produced at my leisure. This, however, is not even close to the reason why the M1 is such a good weapon. Much like everything else about the M1, the shells are woefully outdated, the primitive 5-meter long projectiles are slow, inaccurate, and easy to intercept.
However, the effects are quite pretty.
Yes! This is what makes the M1 such a good weapon system! The fact that it pleases me personally and nothing else! Unlike more advanced munitions, there exists a certain splendor to the inefficient explosive mixes that many of the shells employ.
For this sole redeeming quality, I employ the otherwise archaic, dilapidated, and useless weapon at every possible opportunity.
It is quite obvious that M1 was kept in active service for several million years for me and me alone to use their silly bullets. How thoughtful of them! To be blessed with perfect precognition and use it exclusively for such a noble goal as to lighten up the skirmishes I take part in that little additional amount!
Many people disagree with me, stating that no, the M1 was only installed on myself as an afterthought due to the sheer number of their surplus stocks still around at the time of my construction. They are, however, incorrect, as their opinions are at odds with my own (the more important perspective). At least two sailors who have served aboard me agree with the fact that the M1’s munitions are slightly prettier to watch than my other weapons’, cementing my stance as the sole correct one.
The projectiles I have selected to be the first things I’ve lobbed at another living thing in nearly fifty thousand years are none other than a personal favorite of mine: The KP-83, a nuclearly shaped penetrating shell that is capable of sending scalding lances of vaporized bismuth miles through warsteel. Like many other of the M1’s patterns, the shells are expensive, unreliable, illegal to use against organic targets, and, most of all, excessive.
And how salaciously, decadently excessive they are! I love them! To even think of violating the Atom, steadfast and revered, for such a mundane purpose as an upscaled APHE munition is absurd! Yes, friend, the KP-83 is a perfect expression of the absurd technological lengths humans will achieve for the sole purpose of killing, a potent statement of their sheer stubborn refusal to roll over and let The Enemy drive us to extinction, even in the nascent stages of interstellar exploration.
Less than a quarter second, now. I watch in eager anticipation as my shells close the final few kilometers towards The Enemy fleet.
More beautiful than a flower in bloom, more lucent than a sunrise, more radiant than a newborn’s first smile, the first nuclear explosion blossoms before the enemy fleet. The first are the shells detected and shot down by their point defenses, clearly detectable by the lances of vaporized bismuth that sear forward from the fireballs, yet the sewing pin-shaped detonations grow closer and closer until…
..contact! Blessed, rousing contact! My reward electrode buzzes with electricity, signifying multiple successful impacts with The Enemy’s ships.
As the ephemeral light fades, I take in the damage wrought. Whole swathes of The Enemy’s hull plating have been shattered and scorched where it was kissed by the nuclear fire, and I can pick out the brightly-glowing pinpricks of slag from where the lances of vaporized metal penetrated their alluring forms. The afflicted ships reel slightly before accelerating to correct, implying a dizzying blow.
Ha! What a joke! Had I not known better I would have assumed that they had been seriously maimed by the KP-83 shells, yet such a thing would imply flimsy, non-reinforced interiors, like those of a civilian craft! Clearly, this, too, must be some extension of the facade they so stubbornly uphold.
And yet…
And yet…
And yet, I haven’t even begun in earnest! I have a whole second until my volley connects. Whole gigabytes of munition spreadsheets and readiness data stream into my expanded consciousness as I pore over my options, considering what might make for the most efficient follow-up killing blow. Perhaps I should employ my primary weapon?
Ha! What a stupid question!
To even think that I would allow a conflict to end before it could even begin! I really must be going senile with age.
Why, anyone with even a modicum of common sense understands that war is art, and furthermore, that art takes time.
What possible harm could it do to prolong this skirmish by a few mere hours, or perhaps days? None, of course! It would be unbecoming of my eminence to be a bad sport in war by ending the conflict too early, after all.
The Enemy’s fleet becomes illuminated, if only for a second, by the muzzle flashes of their cannons as they attempt to emulate my opening volley. How laudatory! I’m flattered that they hold me in such high regard as to mimic my opening attack.
Why, I’m so impressed that I’ve begun to entertain the notion of allowing their shells to land on me as a statement of thanks. Such a thought is aborted, of course, the moment I realize such an attack could harm the beautiful luster of my paint. I shudder to even conceive of such a horrible fate.
Unfortunately for The Enemy’s crude emulations of my tactics, naval warfare no longer exists in the age of the broadside, nor has it for several millions of years. I spool up my short-range jump drives— all thirty two of the apartment-block sized mechanisms— prepare my drone bays, and order another volley of KP-83 shells to be loaded into my M1s.
The Enemy’s shells, accompanied by a wave of missiles, hurdle the final few kilometers towards my surface before they-
THOOM -detonate, filling the empty space where I had been just a moment prior with nuclear explosions of the mundane variety.
Why tolerate a risk to my vanity when I could instead expend the charge in one of my jump drives to simply vanish from the area? Of course, positioning myself above them on the stellar plane is certainly a tangible side effect of preserving my good looks.
I elect to release a swarm of stiletto hunter-killer corvette drones as an opening move, supplemented with a volley of 320 anti-ship missiles and yet another volley of 1200 millimeter nuclear shaped charge shells.
Much like my previous volley, this provides little tactical advantage whatsoever, instead fulfilling the exalted role of entertaining me.
While agile, the apartment block-sized drones are woefully frail, occasionally dwarfed by some of The Enemy’s (historic) munitions. Still, they serve well as harassment and defense fodder for more worthwhile projectiles. The anti-ship missiles are fast, yet once again, their scale reserves them better to maiming and euthanizing already shattered craft. I have already spoken on my beloved 1200 mm cannons.
The Enemy are quick to turn themselves and loose another volley. Rather than attempt another short-range jump, I elect to yaw upward and accelerate away from the incoming projectiles.
Alas, the shells reach me before I can complete my maneuver. I ignore them even as they close in, opting to continue my acceleration.
Unopposed, The Enemy’s munitions hurdle towards my perfect hull before-
BRrRrRrRrRrRrRrRrRrRrRrRrT -they pass the invisible threshold dictating the minimum engagement range for my point defense weapons and are swiftly obliterated by well-placed streams of 120 millimeter high impact rounds.
I did say I’d rather my paint go unmarred, did I not?
My anti-ship missiles are the first to arrive at The Enemy, honing greedily towards their still hot missile bays and cannon housings. They answer with interceptors of their own, yet the miserable defenses are neither fast nor potent enough to pose a worthy barrier to the entire volley of missiles. As the thirty two surviving hypersonic projectiles smash violently into The Enemy’s foremost craft, my drones warp into their formation and begin peppering their engines and sensory structures with their miniMAC emplacements.
The Enemy responds predictably, directing much of their fire, as well as every close-in weapon, into slaughtering the trespassing craft.
Just in time for the second volley of nuclear shaped charge shells to kiss The Enemy’s hulls unopposed. Two hundred and thirty seven shells successfully detonate, with one going off in the barrel (tragic, but unexpected with the finicky munition) and two experiencing failures of their fuze assemblies, exploding as dirty bombs.
How spectacular! How dazzling! A perfect display of timing, predictive acumen, and raw, unfettered talent by myself! How I’ve dearly missed the ability to demonstrate my impeccable skill!
My thoughts go hazy with euphoria as my reward system detects a successfully executed multi-step tactic and responds accordingly. I push against the incoherence, refusing to allow my concentration to wane for even an instant.
THOOM. Having long completed my maneuver and weapon preparation, I allow my short-range jump drives to propel me in-line with The Enemy’s formation. Even before the exotic particles disperse from obfuscating my sensor data, I fire my conventional magnetic railguns, relying solely on my predictions to guide the projectiles.
Forty-eight railroad car-sized superluminal bolts of iron illuminate the void with their streaks as they tear through space, with thirty-one instantly shattering The Enemy’s ships with their absurd kinetic energy. I curse myself for my sloppiness, yet my MACs were not the reason for such a maneuver.
No, that honor would belong to my tertiary armaments: two truly titanic Gamma Ray emitters, placed in an over-under arrangement on my bow. Half an instant later, after my targeting sensors regain the clarity lost from my recent jump, the twin arrays activate.
Their wires thrum with unfathomable voltages as the emitters begin to exude their deadly radiation, the titanic servos emitting an audible whine as they threaten to give under the stress of pitching and yawing their sports field-sized lenses at absurd speeds, yet hold firmly.
Though the beam itself is invisible, even to my broadband sensors, the effects are quite the opposite. Crafts caught in the scything beam begin to shrivel and carbonize as their reflective hull coatings are overwhelmed, their interiors begin to slush as the metal making them up loses consistency.
Though it lasted only a second, the damage is immense with nearly every sufficiently small craft in their cone of fire burnt away instantaneously.
THOOM. I jump once again.
Directly into the point blank trajectory of what I easily recognize to be a salted fission nuclear missile, courtesy of The Enemy.

| MAY 5, 2023~Department of Energy Issues Request for Information to Provide Feedback on Critical Materials Assessment~ DOE Issues Request for Information to Provide Feedback on Critical Materials Assessment (govdelivery.com) https://preview.redd.it/130qasmbbd4b1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=eb3f3658182302d9d0e839603c2847367b564173 The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking public feedback on DOE’s draft Critical Materials Assessment. This RFI is being issued by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE)’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO), with the purpose of improving the DOE Critical Materials Assessment prior to finalization. Specifically, this RFI seeks input on the following Areas of Interest: - Data and Information to Support Revision of Analysis
- Improvements to the Methodology
Click here to read the RFI, including the draft list of critical materials for energy resulting from this Assessment. Historically, the Critical Materials Assessment has informed DOE’s priorities for research activities. The dynamic nature of criticality necessitates ongoing updates to the Assessment. Since DOE released its first Critical Materials Strategy in 2010, DOE’s research portfolio has expanded into a Critical Materials Research, Development, Demonstration, and Commercialization Application (RDD&CA) Program. DOE anticipates updating the Critical Materials Assessment every three years to reflect the most current data and market conditions underlying the methodology. Inclusion on DOE’s critical materials for energy list will inform crosscutting priorities including Critical Materials RDD&CA Program priorities and eligibility for the Inflation Reduction Act 48C tax credit. Responses to this RFI must be submitted electronically to [ [email protected]](mailto: [email protected]) no later than 5:00pm ET on June 20, 2023. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (TSX:NB) (OTCQX:NIOBF) intends to produce as part of its Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project in Nebraska (the “Project”) would be eligible for new tax credits once the Project is financed and placed into commercial production. ****ALSO UNDER- Other Provisions That Could Benefit NioCorpOther provisions of the law are aimed at encouraging greater production of critical minerals in the U.S.: $40 billion commitment authority for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Innovative Technology Loan Guarantee Program (Title XVII), on top of DOE’s existing commitment authority of approximately $24 billion. The Innovative Technologies Loan Guarantee Program authorizes loan guarantees for projects that (1) “avoid, reduce, utilize, or sequester” air pollutants or anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases; and (2) employ “new or significantly improved technologies” as compared to commercial technologies in service in the United States at the time the guarantee is issued. JANUARY 2023 National Defense Act Calls out NIOBIUM & TITANIUM & SCANDIUM & the need to establish a U.S. Industrial Base for the Supply & Processing of ALL! https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20220711/CRPT-117hrpt397.pdf The committee believes the United States industrial base for the supply and processing of the critical mineral scandium has significant vulnerabilities. The committee also believes that the United States should seek to eliminate dependence on Chinese and Russian sources of scandium, with support from allies and partners. Accordingly, public and private sectors should cooperate closely to establish scandium processing facilities in the United States. Therefore, the committee directs the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the Secretary of Commerce, to provide a briefing to the House Committee on Armed Services not later than May 1, 2023, on public and private sector activities, working with allied nations, to establish scandium processing facilities in the United States, especially facilities based on more efficient, cleaner, and less energy intensive technologies. This briefing will also include how these processing facilities will help the United States reduce dependence on and compete more effectively with China and Russia. Department of Defense on NIOBIUM PAGE #250 ~Control of Niobium by the Chinese Communist Party~ The committee is concerned by recent investments in global niobium production made by firms under the ownership, control, or influence of the Chinese Communist Party (“CCP”). Niobium is a critical mineral needed for the production of superalloys in jet and rocket engines, critical components in defense systems and hypersonic vehicles, and other emerging technologies. CCP control of niobium and a lack of a domestic capability within the United States present a national security risk similar to risks in the rare earth mineral markets. Therefore, the committee directs the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment to provide a briefing to the House Committee on Armed Services by December 31, 2022, on current global sources of supply of niobium along with a cost-benefit analysis of establishing a domestic supply of high purity niobium oxides. The briefing shall:(1) differentiate between ferroniobium and high-purity niobium (the critical niobium oxide precursor);(2) address the possibility of using underutilized byproduct niobium feed stocks from coproduced materials in the United States to strengthen the domestic industrial base for other key refractory materials such as tantalum; and(3) include a list of defense programs that are significant users of niobium or where niobium is a critical component. Department of Defense Access to TITANIUM on pages #250 & #253 ~Establishment of Efficient Titanium Processing Facilities in the United States~ The committee is concerned that the United States industrial base for the supply and processing of the critical mineral titanium has significant vulnerabilities, including dependence on strategic competitors for the supply and processing of titanium. The committee believes that the United States should seek to eliminate dependence when it comes to the supply and processing of titanium, with support from allies and partners. Furthermore, the committee believes the public and private sectors should cooperate closely to establish titanium processing facilities in the United States or in other trusted partner countries. Therefore, the committee directs the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the heads of other appropriate Federal departments, to submit to the House Committee on Armed Services an unclassified briefing not later than December 31, 2022, that includes:(1) a description of the public and private sector activities to cooperate and establish efficient titanium processing facilities in the United States or in trusted partner countries; and(2) an analysis of how such facilities will help the United States reduce dependence on strategic competitors\**.**\** SEE ALSO ~Armed Services report to the Senate supporting (2023 NDAA)https://www.armed-services.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/fy23_ndaa_bill_report.pdfSUBTITLE B— NATIONAL DEFENSE STOCKPILE (***There is more in the document for those interested!) Modification of acquisition authority under Strategic and Critical Materials Stock Piling Act (sec. 1411)The committee recommends a provision that would amend the Strategic and Critical Materials Stock Piling Act (50 U.S.C. 98d) in order to give the National Defense Stockpile Manager greater flexibility and agility to acquire critical materials, including rare earth elements, that are necessary to meet the requirements of the Department of Defense.Briefings on shortfalls in National Defense Stockpile (sec. 1412)The committee recommends a provision that would amend section 14 of the Strategic and Critical Materials Stock Piling Act (50 U.S.C. 98h-5) to require the National Defense Stockpile Manager to submit, not later than March 1 each year, a briefing to the congressional defense committees on strategic and critical materials shortfalls.Authority to acquire materials for the National Defense Stockpile (sec. 1413)The committee recommends a provision that would authorize the National Defense Stockpile Manager to use, of the funds appropriated for the National Defense Stockpile Transaction Fund, $1.0 billion for the acquisition of materials determined to be strategic and critical materials required to meet the defense, industrial, and essential civilian needs of the United States. *********Please see Response to the following question: Jan. 2023Jim: Given the information posted above-***A) Can you offer a comment on how the Scandium, Titanium & Niobium mining & processing facilities MENTIONED above would help or affect the outcome of the Elk Creek Mine Project moving forward?* See Response: "The Congress is focusing more intensely now on the need to encourage greater domestic production capacity of scandium, niobium, titanium, and rare earths. The language contained in the House Report accompanying the FY23 NDAA requires DoD to brief the House Armed Services Committee on each of the topics mentioned related to scandium, niobium, and titanium. These initiatives show that our education efforts, and those of others, are moving these elements to a much higher visibility with Congressional leaders. That is very good for our Project for a number of reasons. The findings and recommendations of these studies can often spur Congress to take more definitive actions (e.g., funding availability) of Projects such as ours." Those alloys are used in the construction, automotive and transport, aerospace and defense, oil and gas, and other industries. Niobium is a $3.3 billion per year global market but is currently served by only three major niobium producers in two countries.Niobium chloride would likely be converted by NioCorp into niobium oxide, but niobium chloride is also used in glass and ceramic manufacturing.Niobium oxide is critical to multiple applications, including niobium-lithium-ion batteries, superalloys, superconducting applications, capacitors, specialized optics, and many others. Its use in niobium-lithium-ion batteries is considered by current niobium producers as one of the fastest growing prospective global niobium markets. https://preview.redd.it/2eqlicc1fd4b1.png?width=250&format=png&auto=webp&s=450527c6d82996ee66f571526fb245d7b8b25fb4 MAY 26th 2023~NioCorp Demonstrates the Ability to Potentially Double Projected Titanium Recovery Rates for the Elk Creek Projecthttps://www.niocorp.com/niocorp-demonstrates-the-ability-to-potentially-double-projected-titanium-recovery-rates-for-the-elk-creek-project/ Demonstration Plant Shows New Recovery Process May Double NioCorp’s Titanium Production per Tonne of Ore as well as Produce a Higher Purity Product that May Command Higher Market Prices – NioCorp Developments Ltd. (“NioCorp” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:NB) (TSX:NB) is pleased to announce that it has successfully demonstrated an ability to potentially double the recovery of titanium from each tonne of ore the Company expects to mine at its Nebraska-based Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project (the “Project”), once project financing is obtained and the commercial plant is constructed. The new process is expected to produce a purer form of titanium that may command a higher price than is assumed in NioCorp’s June 2022 feasibility study for the Project (the “Feasibility Study”). NioCorp’s demonstration plant in Trois Rivieres, Quebec, has shown that the Company’s new and improved recovery process can likely achieve an 83.7% rate of overall titanium recovery to final product. This compares to a 40.3% titanium recovery rate in NioCorp’s previous process approach. This new result points to a potentially large increase in the amount of titanium that NioCorp can potentially produce at currently planned rates of mining ") MAY 29th 2023~NioCorp Launches Phased Approach to Commercial Production of Made-in-America Aluminum-Scandium Master Alloyhttps://www.niocorp.com/niocorp-launches-phased-approach-to-commercial-production-of-made-in-america-aluminum-scandium-master-alloy/ NioCorp Partnering with Nanoscale Powders LLC to Explore the Possibility of Establishing the First US-Based Mine-to-Master-Alloy Vertically Integrated Production of the High-Performance MaterialNioCorp’s Potential Commercial Production of Al-Sc Master Alloy Could Launch Prior to the Company’s Planned Production of >100 Tonnes/Year of Scandium Oxide at its Proposed Elk Creek Critical Minerals Project in Nebraska and Would Use Scandium Produced at the Elk Creek Facility as well as From Other SourcesChina Now Dominates the Scandium World, but North America is Now Positioned to Emerge as a “Leading Scandium Producer,” says NioCorp CEO THINKCOLLABORATIONS ON BATTERY BOXES ~(FORDS PATENT) ~& OTHER OEMS & MORE! MAY 29th 2023~ Jim/NIOCORP respond to question on recent Scandium News Release above:What comes to mind right off the bat is: *A)"How is this Scandium AlSc master Alloy different than what Niocorp produced with IBC & AMES laboratory???"* Response: "It is a different process that will be utilized. " *B) Will this be a Patentable approach now moving forward? in conjunction with Nanoscale???* Response: " Yes and yes. But we do not discuss the details of intellectual property matters except as required by law" (\****This is very interesting indeed because a few years back Niocorp was not interested in patenting any such materials!)* *C) IS NIOCORP still engaged with IBC, AMES & OTHER ENTITIES in regards to Scandium Alloy production & uses moving forward? and with the New Niobium & Titanium oxides as well!!!!* Response: "We are focusing on our partnership with Nanoscale on the production of AlSc master alloy, but we engaged with a number of parties on various elements of our scandium-aluminum master alloy business development. We are not working with IBC on niobium or titanium product development efforts." (****SOUNDS LIKE OTHER COLLABORATIONS ARE ONGOING WITH POSSIBLE PRIVATE & GOVERNMENT ENTITIES?? OFF-TAKE AGREEMENTS & SO MUCH MORE! COULD BE IN PLAY AS THE MINE IS BUILT & NEARS PRODUCTION!!!!!!) "ENGAGED WITH A NUMBER OF VARIOUS PARTIES!!!!" ARE (SCANDIUM, NIOBIUM & TITANIUM ALL INVOLVED......???? INTERESTING!!!!) THEN THERE IS THE RARE EARTHS QUESTION:Sharing Jims response as Niocorp does have legal DISCLOSURE constraints to deal with in regards to all "Material News releases"! When asked about Rare Earths ON ~MAY, 26th 2023~ RESPONSE: "NioCorp has not made a final determination on which REE products we will make, including tonnages, etc.. That determination can only be made in the context of publication of an updated Feasibility Study" FORM YOUR OWN OPINIONS & CONCLUSIONS ABOVE: https://preview.redd.it/nf73356wgd4b1.png?width=218&format=png&auto=webp&s=7916393789ad99412484d280e31273e57a34d842 https://preview.redd.it/08s205rxgd4b1.png?width=480&format=png&auto=webp&s=88cd9b2cb2d076f739c323ed94f063179e5bf5b3 https://preview.redd.it/ut3f46qygd4b1.png?width=383&format=png&auto=webp&s=ef4b4f460b2813fe23f7b862958788ca2a189aaa CHICO submitted by Chico237 to NIOCORP_MINE [link] [comments] |

2023.06.06 08:07 Evening-Might-1097 Generating Stereo Driving Data from GTA V for Stereo Visual SLAM tasks
| We would like to introduce the TeFS (Temporal-controlled Frame Swap) method, to generate synthetic stereo-driving data from GTA V for stereo Visual SLAM tasks. Stereo Vison with Depth Ground Truth Trajectories for Odometry Tasks Here's a short sample of the generated stereo-vision data from GTA V: Video Sample of Stereo Driving Data And here's our presentation: Generating High-Fidelity Stereo Driving Data for Autonomy Analysis - YouTube For more background context, - TeFS is designed to overcome the lack of native stereo vision support in commercial driving simulators, and we demonstrate its effectiveness using GTA V by bringing the TeFS plug-in.
- We used this method to generate GTAV-TeFS, the first large-scale GTA V stereo-driving dataset, containing over 88,000 high-resolution stereo RGB image pairs, along with temporal information, GPS coordinates, camera poses, and full-resolution dense depth maps. Enabling multiple Visual SLAM tasks such as stereo odometry, RGB-D odometry, and stereo matching tasks.
- Full control through menu-based UI system, code-free stereo data collection. Configurable stereo setups such as stereo baseline, camera position, camera angles, etc.
- Multi-destination support for creating loop closure and complex road mapping.
- The goal of our work is to bring more high-fidelity stereo data from commercial-grade game simulators into the research domain and push the boundary of autonomy algorithms.

2023.06.06 07:21 Significant-Notice- Evidence from Italy’s ChatGPT Ban
We analyse the effects of the ban of ChatGPT, a generative pre-trained transformer chatbot, on individual productivity. We first compile data on the hourly coding output of over 8,000 professional GitHub users in Italy and other European countries to analyse the impact of the ban on individual productivity. Combining the high-frequency data with the sudden announcement of the ban in a difference-in-differences framework, we find that the output of Italian developers decreased by around 50% in the first two business days after the ban and recovered after that. Applying a synthetic control approach to daily Google search and Tor usage data shows that the ban led to a significant increase in the use of censorship bypassing tools. Our findings show that users swiftly implement strategies to bypass Internet restrictions but this adaptation activity creates short-term disruptions and hampers productivity.

2023.06.06 02:26 bie716 Singapore experts of r/bangtan! What advice and recommendations do you have for ARMY visiting Singapore for the SUGA Agust D Concert? (16 - 18 June 2023)
In just under two weeks, ARMYs will descend upon Singapore to see SUGA! Help an ARMY out and let them know about safety, how to get around, where to eat, tourist attractions, BTS-related things to do, or anything else that you think someone should know when they visit! (Special thanks to the mods for your input and feedback for this guide!)
BTS' Past Visits
Red Bullet Tour (2014 BTS Live Trilogy Episode II) at the The Star Performing Arts Centre (13 Dec 2014) Music Bank performance (4 Aug 2017) at the Suntec Convention Centre Love Yourself World Tour (19 Jan 2019) at the National Stadium This made history as the first time a K-pop group held a concert at the venue (largest concert venue in the country) and
tickets sold out in about 3.5 hours! (45,000 audience)
- Concert review
- Witty notice from the Singapore Police Force abt avoiding ticket scams (it uses the BTS song titles!)
- Bonus: Jimin picked Marina Bay Sands as his special spot in the BTS x Street Galleries collaboration with Google revealed on ARMY Day (July 9) 2022
Concert Venue
Do note that it’s currently the June school holidays too (26 May-26 Jun), so the Sports Hub and surrounding areas may be crowded with many other visitors besides the concert-goers. Please be mindful!
- Singapore Indoor Stadium, right next to the National Stadium (both are part of the Singapore Sports Hub) where BTS performed at their last concert here in 2019. In fact, the Indoor Stadium was then used as the waiting zone for the standing zone ticket-holders.
- Concert guidelines been posted yet (will update here when they are), but here are the general guidelines for events there (links opens a pdf)
- The nearest MRT station is the Stadium station, on the Circle line - here is a train map (with Stadium MRT circled out in light purple). You’ll know when you’ve arrived as the station design is quite unique! Go up the elevator and follow the signage - the path is sheltered.
- You can find Kallang Wave Mall right next to the venue, for a spot of shopping and dining before the concert (opening hrs:10am-10pm daily). There is another smaller mall Leisure Park Kallang located next to the carpark, which houses an ice skating rink, bowling alley and cinema alongside more food options. The open space in front of the MRT station and the two malls is where ARMYs are likely to gather to exchange fan support and stuff
- The nearest hawker centre (i.e the affordable street food) is Old Airport Road Food Centre, one of the oldest and largest hawker centres in the country. It is about 20 mins walk away from the stadium, or you can simply alight at the Mountbatten/Dakota MRT stations (one or two stops away from Stadium MRT station respectively); both are about a 5 mins’ walk away from the food centre. Here is a list of recommendations (unfortunately, not a lot of Halal food stalls here. Let me know if you need those).
- There is also a McDonalds’ & KFC near Mountbatten MRT if you want something more familiar, or potentially try whatever new promo is currently going on at these places.
Sightseeing/Activities
Non-exhaustive list (all prices are in SGD)
- National Gallery Singapore. There is a special Namjooning Tour as part of the Gallery Wellness Festival. Slots are fully booked for the guided tours on 25 & 30 June. You could try the self-guided tours instead, which start on 17 July. Gallery passes for general admission to the permanent galleries (needed to access the tour) cost $20 for non-Singaporeans aged 13-59. Closes early (by 3pm) on some weekends in June and July (see dates on website).
- National Museum Singapore. Has very interactive and engaging exhibits. Highly recommended (I used to be a volunteer docent there for abt a year). Tickets cost from $15 (for access to permanent galleries only)
- Singapore Zoo & adjacent parks (Bird Park, River Wonders, Night Safari). We have one of the best zoos in the world! Single park tickets cost $50. Multi-park options also available. .
- Gardens by the Bay. Pretty gardens with outdoor sections and 2 indoor air-conditioned conservatories - you may have heard of the supertrees that have been featured in the movie "Crazy Rich Asians" and K-drama "Little Women". Provides a welcome respite from the heat. It’s free to visit the outdoor areas, but it’s really worth it to pay for entry to the conservatories. There are various pricing packages, so best to check out the website yourself.
- Singapore Botanical Gardens is our first UNESCO World Heritage site, the first and only tropical botanic garden on the list. Admission is free.
- The Merlion and the Marina Bay area. I personally recommend going at night to see the famed cityscape of Singapore all lit up (the temperature’s cooler too!). Marina Bay Sands Mall has a light and water show every night. There is also the iLight Festival going on now until 25 June with artistic light installations (mix of free and paid attractions). Bonus: Yoongi wore a Merlion Singapore t-shirt in a travel-themed Lotte Xylitol ad!
- You can also ride the Singapore Flyer for an aerial view of our city like the boys did! Admission costs $40.
- Visit our ethnic enclaves, Chinatown, Little India, Kampung Glam and Geylang Serai to see old shophouses, shop for souvenirs and try ethnic food
- One of the fanbases here, BangtanSG, has teased an ARMY event from 11-13 June. Will update when more details are released.
- Sentosa & Universal Studios Singapore theme park - you can access the island via various modes of transport with varying admission fees. Transport within the island is free.
- If you don’t want to think too hard, the best airport in the world for 12 years running is also an attraction in itself! See its dedicated section below for more information.
- Singapore is also located in the centre of Southeast Asia - if you’ve never been in this oft-forgotten region of the world, take the chance to check out our neighbouring countries as well! Malaysia can easily be reached via bus, and Indonesia via ferry.
(Note: You may want to check out
Klook for discount tickets/passes)
Dining
Singapore is a food paradise with various cuisines from the local ethnic groups, as well as international ones. For Muslims, there are a lot of Muslim-owned or Halal-certified options around (
look for this certificate, or the label “Muslim-owned”), including most of the fast food chains like McDonald’s/KFC/Burger King/Subway.
Carrying some cash with you (~$10 per pax) is a good idea, especially if you’re venturing out to hawker centres; while many places now have an electronic payment system in place, cash is still king in terms of versatility, and anecdotally most stores prefer cash or will charge a credit-card payment surcharge.
Where to eat?
- Most of the malls have a good selection of dining options, ranging from the (relatively affordable) multi-stall foodcourts to fast-food restaurants, cafes, and more upmarket restaurants.
- It can get crowded during lunchtime (12-2pm) as office workers come out for their break, so try to avoid those hours if possible, or make advance reservations.
- If you are staying/shopping in Orchard Road, Far East Plaza (level 4 & 5) and Lucky Plaza (multiple levels) have relatively more affordable food options for the area..
- There’s a myriad of other malls in the suburban areas outside of Orchard to be explored.
- Hawker centres: A “hawker” in Singapore refers to a street food vendor, and in Singapore they’ve been centralised into food centres to create an iconic Singapore dining institution. These places are generally not air-conditioned, but they are the most affordable dining option. If you see an item on a table even if it’s something innocuous like a tissue paper packet or name-card, it means the seat's been reserved (“chop-ed” in the local slang) by people who are off queuing for their food.
- Look for stalls with the longest lines (the most popular stalls will have long queues all day long), but most stalls should have decent food.
- Newton Hawker Centre (near Newton MRT station) and Lau Pa Sat (near Telok AyeDowntown/Raffles Place Stations) are probably the most well-known to tourists, but beware of touts and over-charging, especially at Newton.
- Taking the MRT out to slightly less central areas like Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, Kallang, etc. should bring you to other hawker centres that cater to locals.
- Order in: GrabFood and Foodpanda are the two most popular food delivery apps with extensive coverage all around Singapore. Deliveroo is also available. Just be prepared to pay upwards of $5 delivery fee during peak periods, and the listed online prices are usually higher than in-store. The apps also have pick-up available if you’d simply like to order in advance.
- The ethnic enclaves like Kampung Glam (Malay/Muslim), Chinatown and Little India have a higher concentration of the respective ethnic cuisines, but most places in Singapore have a good mix of different local and international cuisines
What to eat?
Breakfast (These are generally very affordable options that should cost you below $10 per person, particularly if you go to food courts/hawker centres)
- Tea/coffee with kaya toast and half-boiled eggs. Available at most hawker centres (usually at the drink stalls), and chains like Ya Kun Kaya Toast and Killiney Kopitiam in malls. Order tea/coffee like a local by referring to this guide.
- Among the fast-food chains, KFC offers the more local option of chicken porridge (congee)
- Roti prata, a south-Indian flatbread (also known as paratha in India, or roti canai in Malaysia), available at most hawker centres and Indian coffee-shops
- Nasi lemak, coconut milk-flavoured rice with a variety of side dishes (usual ones: omelette, fried chicken wing/fried fish, fried anchovies).
- Beehoon, rice vermicelli with a range of toppings like fish cake, luncheon meat (spam), chicken wings, veggies etc.
- Chai Tow Kway (“carrot cake” - it’s actually radish cake), Tau Huey (soya bean curd pudding) + Youtiao (chinese fried dough)
- Mee Rebus, a Malay noodle dish with thick & spicy potato-based gravy topped with hard-boiled egg, bean sprouts, fried shallots, tau kwa (fried beancurd) and spring onions
Lunch & dinner - Chilli crab: I don’t have any personal recommendations, and it could be costly because the crabs are usually charged by weight, which may vary daily. The link gives a run-down of some popular places
- Hainanese chicken rice: Again, no personal recommendations, but you can find this in most foodcourts and hawker centres. You should be able to find one of these for $5 or less.
- Murtabak/Briyani: My favourite is ZamZam Restaurant (est, 1908) at North Bridge Road in the Muslim enclave of Kampung Glam, but there is a whole row of Singapore-Indian restaurants serving a similar menu there
- Everything under the sun :) Google maps & data coverage generally works well in most parts of Singapore, so search & explore! Some sites you can start at include Chope & Burpple.
Snacks Getting Around
Singapore has a great
public transport system. It’s really easy & cheap to get around on the MRT (mass rapid transit trains) and buses. Use
Google Maps or the
City Mapper app to navigate yourself and get route recommendations (the latter also has transport arrival timings and fare estimates. It also works in
many cities globally, so is very useful for tourists).
Various transport passes are available for tourists, but you can also use your contactless credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) to pay for the fares (no registration required).
In general, using the Circle Line (yellow) or Downtown Line (blue) should get you to most tourist attractions. Orchard Road (main shopping belt) can be accessed via the North South Line (red), between Orchard and Somerset MRT stations.
Map for reference, with links to versions in Chinese/Malay/Tamil available for download. Taxis and ride-hailing cars: We have Grab and Gojek in place of Uber.
- The largest local taxi fleet - the blue Comfort Cabs - also have their own ride-hailing app to compete, although they can also operate via the traditional meter & can be booked via phone call/flagged down as usual. Fares can be paid via cash post-ride or credit card for all these private car options.
- Ride-hailing tends to be very expensive. At peak periods, ride-hailing services could be even more expensive than taxis, but at least you know the price beforehand. All malls have a taxi stand where you can stand in queue and hop on the next available cab. Queues can be long at morning and evening peak periods, so avoid taking cabs then if you can.
General navigation All signs are in English, and the locals - esp the younger generation - are able to speak English fluently. If you’re really lost, feel free to approach others to ask for help! People are generally friendly and helpful despite initial appearances :)
As a side note: in general, if Google Maps is asking you to circle around a building to get somewhere - don’t. You can cut through most places on the ground floor quite easily, even the residential buildings (unless they’re private properties like condominiums/landed housing). MRT stations are connected to a good number of places via sheltered corridors if they’re nearby enough. Enjoy the aircon & shade instead of walking outside in the heat if you can.
Shopping
- Orchard Road is our main shopping belt, running from Orchard to Somerset MRT stations. You can find many shopping malls there, with collections ranging from upmarket to fast fashion. Check out Design Orchard, a retail space for fashion and lifestyle items by Singapore designers.
- For an old-style emporium experience drop by Mustafa Centre. It used to be open 24 hours but this was disrupted by COVID19 and now it is only open until 2am (best place for late night shopping!). It's not a glitzy mall, but has crowded aisles chock full of all manners of things, including snacks and souvenirs (avoid going on Sundays when it gets super crowded with migrant workers on their day off).
- Already mentioned above are the ethnic enclaves Chinatown, Little India, Kampung Glam and Geylang Serai with smaller standalone shops. Special mention for Haji Lane in the Kampung Glam area, a small street with cute boutiques.
- The many, many other malls scattered across the country - a brief list. For example, Paya Lebar alone (just another station up from Dakota!) is connected to several malls like Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ), PLQ 2, PL Square, Singpost centre, and a couple more within a 5-mins’ walk (Tanjong Katong Complex, City Plaza, KINEX etc.).
Weathewhat to wear
The weather is especially hot these days (max temp of up to 35 degrees celsius, or 95 Fahrenheit), with possible spurts of heavy rain at certain times of day, so dress light and carry an umbrella (most places do have sheltered walkways between buildings and bus-stops/MRT stations though, so don’t worry too much about getting around in the rain). Mall air-conditioning can be cold, so hv another layer (e.g. cardigan/wrap/scarf) on hand. Remember to hydrate frequently & avoid staying outdoors for too long!
Airport
- Singapore Changi Airport is often voted by travellers as the best airport in the world, with lots of shopping, dining and leisure options in the various terminals. BTS (except Jin who took a different flight) stopped over at Changi Airport on the way to New Zealand for Bon Voyage 4 (airport lounge scenes shown in Episode 1)! While you may not have access to the business class lounge like them, there are various other options to rest and hangout, like the many gardens (some even accessible from the public areas) and even a free 24h cinema (Terminal 3 transit area).
- Jewel Changi Airport which is attached to Terminal 1 is an attraction in itself. It's worth arriving 2-3 hours earlier than your flight check-in time to grab a meal and have a look around Jewel. A particular highlight is to take the skytrain between Terminals 2 and 3, cutting across the centre of Jewel, to get a spectacular view of the indoor waterfall. There is also shopping aplenty (Tip: NTUC Fairprice supermarket in Jewel has a nice selection of food and non-food souvenirs which are pretty affordable).
- There are various transport options for getting to the city from the airport. Public transport like MRT is convenient if you are travelling light, else there is a shuttle service to selected downtown hotels. Taxis and ride-hire cars can be expensive, especially with the airport surcharge.
- Sort of related, Yoongi gave a shout out to our national airlines (Singapore Airlines) for its great seat and amenities in business class in BV4! (He said: let's always fly Singapore Airlines in the future!). The airlines must have taken notice, because they recently announced that they would be adding BTS content like songs, MVs, LY New York concert, and Break The Silence docu in their in-flight entertainment system to commemorate BTS' 10th anniversary. An ARMY also spotted a write-up abt BTS in their in-flight magazine.
We’ve tried to achieve a balance between being succinct and informative, but certainly the above info is not exhaustive.
So do feel free to ask in the comments below if the info you need is not here! Fellow SG ARMY, or those familiar with Singapore, feel free to chime in! submitted by

2023.06.06 01:45 Erudito101111 Have a breather, let's get creative about future seasons!
Hello miners!
As we are approaching the next season, some of our employees are mixed on the reception. That's all well and good - fighting a weird virus in outer space while not being paid by the hour on top of your regular assignments is no easy task.
So instead of complaining about either being too positive or negative, let's get creative about what future will hold!
Some ground rules I observed regarding the seasons and update so far: 1. We have themed updates in yearly fashion (one update per 6 months, two updates of the same theme) 2. The history between the major themes does not overlap (so far) 3. While getting new biomes or primary/secondary weapon would be nice, we should factor in that for every weapon that comes out, it has to be designed with overclocks and every framework type that we ever got, as GSG guarantees that you'll have the framework for every future gun when you buy the DLCs. 4. Some ideas, while great, have too much of design constraints. For example, I doubt we'll see any space walking missions, or getting some liquids in the game.
Pitching in with what we have in game so far:
- Exploring the topic of glyphids on Hoxxes. Getting the season about glyphid organized counter attacks, with something that manages to pupate from the cocoon (remember, if we fail to eliminate the bosses from the cocoons, the management is forced to "shutdown operations in the area")
- So far we saw the rockpox spreading on the station. What if some of those station malfunction and crash on Hoxxes? We may have to retrieve useful parts/minerals/data from wreckage parts while fighting malfunctioning DRG machinery. Rivals have better tech, but DRG has to be packing some seriously agile medical droids if we get rescued every time from the failed mission.
- In azure weald we can see some abstract monoliths that scanner does not recognize. Same with error cubes. What if some ancient civilization was on Hoxxes, deep near the core of the planet? Hoxxes is weirdly diverse, full of creatures that tend to quickly adapt to enviroment. I could see something more alien that influences the glyphids, which we can use to subdue Hoxxes. Or burn it to the ground.
- Lastly, we lost some good guys down there. While Hoxxes is the worst place to get stranded on, the dwarves are tough brew. I can believe some madlads stayed behind and get by on the planet, maybe as crazed enemies. And we have to drag them home by leaving the scent of their favourite beer so they follow us, having to turn off our flashlights as that spooks the accomodated to the darkness dwarf.

2023.06.06 01:29 firesidehats Accelerated BSIT/MSIT: Am I setting myself for success?
Here’s what I have so far for my planned credits I’ll be transferring in. https://preview.redd.it/71ib3qnz8a4b1.jpg?width=1152&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0090d5fb159460c658b56002590a1d0050291931 I know there are sites such as study.com and Sophia, but I was looking for general feedback, stories of successful transfer plans, any advice overall so I can best prepare myself prior to starting the enrollment process. To be honest, I'm getting a little overwhelmed by all the choices. I overall know how WGU works as I have family/friends who have graduated or are enrolled there but no one I know has experience transferring an AAS. Thanks in advanced! submitted by firesidehats to WGU [link] [comments] |

2023.06.05 23:05 Joadzilla Thousands are living in RVs on Los Angeles’ streets. Leaders want to shrink the number, but the solution is elusive
https://edition.cnn.com/2023/06/05/us/los-angeles-rv-dwellers/index.html
Los Angeles CNN —
Early one recent Friday morning, sanitation workers, homeless-outreach workers and LAPD officers arrived on a little street in the west of Los Angeles. Jasmine Avenue is lined with low-rise apartment blocks, an imposing Catholic Church, a school and a handful of dilapidated recreational vehicles.
That morning on Jasmine Avenue, RV residents were offered $500 gift cards and a motel room. The city also offered to tow and destroy their RVs. One RV managed to leave, under its own steam, with what smelled like sewage leaking along the road as it left. This clearance is one small part of what has been a piecemeal approach by officials trying to tackle a burgeoning phenomenon of people living permanently in RVs on these streets.
“I’ll take a motel room,” one RV owner told me as he packed up his belongings after about six months on Jasmine Avenue. “See what happens.” But he did not let the city tow and destroy his RV. He towed it elsewhere himself, using a chain and a beaten-up SUV. He wants to keep it.
“The idea sometimes our clients have is, ‘What if this doesn’t work? If this doesn’t work, then I’m back on the streets. I’m back to square one,’” said LaTonya Smith, interim CEO at the St. Joseph Center, a nonprofit that helps the city find accommodation for the unhoused. “People who are living in RVs consider themselves to be housed, and in order for them to leave that RV, sometimes we have to incentivize.”
There are, by the latest count, more than 11,000 people living in RVs across Los Angeles County. And that number has been rising. The Covid-19 pandemic forced more people into poverty. Some of the RV dwellers have jobs but either don’t want to pay apartment rent, or can’t afford to pay it, in a city where the average one-bedroom apartment costs around $2,500 a month.
Some RV dwellers own the vehicles, but others rent them to the monthly tune of a few hundred dollars to more than $1,000, city Councilwoman Traci Park told CNN.
In Los Angeles, you are allowed to sleep in a vehicle on some streets. There are, of course, parking restrictions on many streets. But as the number of RVs has grown, enforcing those restrictions has become harder. Large, immobile RVs require large tow trucks. And, according to the city, destroying a dilapidated RV that might contain harmful chemicals can cost up to $9,000 per vehicle.
Outreach workers from St. Joseph Center interact regularly with RV dwellers. A spokesperson told CNN: “Staff encounter a large percentage, probably safe to say as much as 80-85%, of individuals who are ‘leasing’ RVs or may have purchased an RV that is not suitable for habitation or a ‘legal’ sale.”
Park and others argue that these RVs endanger their residents and blight neighborhoods, acting as magnets for crime and damaging the environment. Some advocates for the unhoused agree the impact on city neighborhoods is an issue.
“There might be trash everywhere,” said Smith from the St. Joseph Center. “People come outside their neighborhoods and homes, that’s not something that they really want to see.”
In the five years since Los Angeles County commissioned one of many reports into the RV problem and potential solutions, the number of RVs on county streets has risen by more than 50% – from more than 4,500 in 2018 to more than 7,100 at last count. Reports are regularly requested and written by various city and county departments.
“I’m tired of studies and reports,” Park told CNN recently at her freshly painted City Hall office. She was elected last year on a platform dripping with intent to handle the various homelessness issues plaguing Los Angeles. Among her first targets: people she calls “vanlords,” some of whom, she says, rent out rotting, unsafe RVs. “There is a thriving trade in RVs being rented out as dwelling units on the internet,” Park said.
Park proposed a motion that would explicitly add RVs to part of the city code that, “Prohibits a person or entity from reserving any street, parking space, or other public space without written authorization from the City while conducting business pertaining to new and used vehicles.” The motion would also force RV owners to comply with a state law, “which requires that any RV offered for sale, sold, rented or leased within California meet the design safety standards of the American National Standards Institute and Fire Protection Association.”
Right now, she said, “Apparently anybody in the city of Los Angeles can buy a junker RV off of a salvage lot and without any oversight or regulation, rent that unsafe inoperable vehicle out to a vulnerable person as a dwelling unit.”
“The point here is not to criminalize homelessness. The point is to regulate what is currently an unregulated marketplace that is causing serious public safety and environmental impacts all over the city,” Park said.
“Too often, RVs that are used as dwellings on LA’s streets are in grave disrepair,” Park’s proposed motion reads, in part. “Meaning that people living in them face unsanitary and sometimes dangerous conditions.”
She has opposition.
“It’s actually good, to provide housing for people” even if it’s an RV, said Dmitry Korikov, a filmmaker who says he volunteers helping people – mainly refugees from Russia and Ukraine – navigate van life on the streets of Los Angeles. “I lived myself in a motor home for two years. So I know how things (work), how the system works.”
He tells RV dwellers which streets they can park on, and connects them with private companies that service the vehicles for a fee: filling up the freshwater tanks, emptying the sewage tanks and sweeping the sidewalks.
“Everyone should have a right to use public streets,” Korikov told CNN. “If you cannot give them an apartment or give them a job to be able to afford an apartment and you tell them that you need to be in tents on the street, but not renting someone’s motor home, that’s evil.”
CNN put Korikov’s points to Park.
“I understand the dilemma,” she said. “On the other hand, I have seen too many of these explosions and these fires and we have got to deal with the collateral impacts that these vehicles are causing in our neighborhoods.” A small number of people have died in RV fires on the streets over the past few years, according to local reports.
Park says she is concerned that the unhoused are being exploited by the vanlords. And she is concerned about the impact the vans are having on the neighborhoods in her district, which includes Venice and much of western Los Angeles, where homeless populations tend to be higher.
One Venice resident told me he returned home from work recently to discover that the sewage tank in an RV had been emptied into the road. He had to walk through human waste to get to his front door.
“We have not resolved the RV issue yet,” Mayor Karen Bass told The Los Angeles Times in March. “But we absolutely will because it’s a very serious issue.”
One of her first moves when she took office as mayor late last year was to declare a state of emergency on homelessness. Her first target was not the RVs on the streets, but the tents on the sidewalks. Her administration has swept over a dozen tent encampments and moved more than 1,200 people into temporary accommodation in motels, the city administrative officer has said. The operation is dubbed Inside Safe.
The idea is to eventually move all those people into permanent housing, in line with an increasingly popular doctrine among housing researchers known as “housing first.” The theory is that the most impactful move in saving someone from homelessness is to provide them housing, with other services such as mental health or substance abuse treatment to follow.
Bass’ office, the city administrator’s office and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority cannot say how many of those people moved off those streets as part of Inside Safe are now in permanent housing. The mayor will hold a roundtable with the press in the coming weeks to discuss the data, her office said. The St. Joseph Center said is has found permanent housing for 32 people. A spokesperson told CNN the center expects those numbers to increase in June.
“I’m not going to leave people on the street while we’re building,” Bass told CNN this spring. “People die on these streets!”
When it comes to the RVs, a pilot program in one city council district has, over about 15 months, seen 41 RVs moved off the street and seven people moved into permanent housing. “That is why our program will be used as a model throughout the city, represented in the 2023-2024 budget adopted in May 2023,” Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez told CNN. That city budget includes $1.3 billion for the fight against homelessness.
City officials have approved a plan to deal with the RVs that includes concerted outreach to those living in them, incentivizing them to move into motel rooms, creating safe parking areas that can accommodate RVs, and finding permanent housing for those living in RVs. Now that plan needs to be implemented.
That final and fundamental piece of this puzzle is arguably the most challenging.
“We need more housing. We need more affordable safe housing,” Smith said. But housing is expensive and takes time to build. And for now, for thousands of people, an RV’s roof over their heads is all they can afford in Los Angeles.

2023.06.05 22:31 brennanoreagan2 Character pack: Maximum Carnage (1.3)
Here's something I might start doing more of in the run-up to the Core Rulebook dropping: a collection of characters that fit a theme, designed to work together in the same scenario. I already posted a sheet for Carnage (
https://www.reddit.com/MarvelMultiverseRPG/comments/11p5go4/venom_and_carnage_13/ ) but to go along with him here's a few of his friends from the classic Maximum Carnage storyline. The only one missing is Demogoblin, who can be easily reskinned from the Green Goblin sheet. Combined these sheets make for a diverse, memorable, and effective collection of villains for your party to go up against.
Shriek is first, using a combination of Weather Control and Energy Control to represent her sound powers. She can attack with Ego or Agility, and deal decent damage with both. Her combat trickery can give her attacks an extra punch as needed.

His blades powers and Additional Limb make him effective at dealing outa lot of damage, and his webbing can hold people down to make them even easier targets. The spider-powers also give him the mobility to get where he needs to go to reach any foe. If he doesn't want to tear apart a party himself, he can use Webtrapping to make them easy prey for the rest of the Carnage "Family."

His has a fair amount of super-strength and brilliance, so his melee and psionic attacks should really pack a punch. Getting to choose which to use against his opponents gives him a lot of flexibility. But perhaps his deadliest weapon is his modified control fog, which can eat away at health over several turns. He might be able to simply outlast the heroes- his health total and Do This All Day can keep him in the fight as his victims wither away.
