2023.06.09 20:26 Additional_Pen_3019 I wonder if this is a primarily psychosomatic illness? (LONG THREAD)

Note, I am not trying to invalidate anyone's experiences , I am just trying to share my thoughts and provide perspective. You are free to agree or disagree with any of the points I raise here.
That being said - I cannot help but feel but this 'POIS' disorder is largely a psychosomatic one. The specific mechanism is called "somatisation", where a mental illness manifests itself with physical symptoms due to subconscious processes within the brain.
To give an example from pop culture, there is a character called Chuck McGill from the TV series "Better Call Saul" who appears to have an allergy to electricity (spoilers ahead!). He experiences genuine physical pain when exposed to electromagnetic currents, and even faints at one point due to overstimulation (which is later understood to be a panic attack).
However, it soon becomes clear that Chuck's illness is psychological in nature. He likely has some form of OCD, as well as a deep seated inferiority complex regarding his younger brother, who is better able to connect with people than he is, and was preferred by both their parents when growing up. Nonetheless, Chuck is very, very able to explain and rationalise the fact that he is suffering from an apparent physical ailment, including statements such as "no one knew about peanut allergies 20 years ago, so just because medical knowledge hasn't advanced yet doesnt mean electricity allergy isnt real." However, it is obvious he is trying to mask a mental condition, but feels extremely ashamed at the prospect of being 'exposed' as being 'crazy', and lashes out publically after someone compares him to a schizophrenic.
Out of necessity, Chuck eventually moves away from this mindset and, after receiving counselling and SSRIs/antidepressants, attempts to reintegrate himself back into normal life. He rids himself of his tinfoil blankets and allows himself to start using electrical appliances. He recovers greatly, and is absolutely fine, in spite of exposing himself to something he is supposedly "allergic" to. (until his brother shows up and triggers his mental illness once more... but I won't go into that!)
You see, I cannot help but notice certain similarities in POIS discussions. There are tons of posts going into complex scientific matters discussing possible 'medical' causes of this illness. Things like issues with the neuroendocrine system, autoimmune reactions, and the like. People taking combinations of supplements, herbs and pharmaceuticals and reporting a reduction in symptoms. I also note that, the research points to a very high comorbidity of mental health disorders like depression and anxiety, and anecdotally I notice a high frequency of ASD, ADHD and OCD.
Thus, I do wonder whether this is some kind of rationalisation, or a somatization of deeper issues. In my opinion, there are likely to be complex emotional and psychological factors at play in POIS sufferers, which lead to the apparent symptoms. Intelligent, rational people are very able to find convincing explanations for their symptoms and struggles - even if they're not actually accurate - and, combined with the mechanism of somatization, it may be very convincing to others, including medical professionals, that the person is suffering from a rare physical ailment as opposed to trying to deal with some kind of inner turmoil.
And yes, I know that the disorder is classified and recognised by many health professionals and is being thoroughly researched - but I posit that this is due to the highly troubling and disturbing nature of the supposed illness (i.e. the idea of not being able to have sex without essentially being crippled by one's own body - that's pretty fucked up) and the fact that many smart people, who suffer with the symptoms, are able to quite lucidly and convincingly explain what might be at play.
This is my personal story, which leads me to the conclusion that I have made...:
I went through a brief phase of thinking I might have POIS. I had extreme lethargy and demotivation whenever I watched porn and masturbated. I would regularly binge and this would leave me feeling flat, exhausted, and just basically awful. The "symptoms" would last for multiple days.
Additionally, for much of my teenage years, I believed I might have some kind of hypersensitivity or allergy to sugary foods. I had to completely avoid them for a very long period as I lacked self control, so would end up binge eating them and genuinely feel awful afterwards.
Eventually, because of my self-control problems, I started convincing myself that every single time I masturbated, or ate a sugary snack - regardless of whether it was just one time or a geninely unhealthy binge - I convinced myself I was doing something wrong and was going to feel terrible afterwards,. And that, by some weird mechanism which I still don't really understand, this actually led to me feeling bad, foggy, and wiped out after I indulged in those things - even in moderation!
Turns out, in fact, that I was actually just very depressed and had been so for a long time, and in addition to that had severe ADHD. I was extremely ashamed at my lack of ability to control myself, and had essentially been traumatised into hating myself for this. Additionally, I noticed that "semen retention" did actually come with many psychological benefits, and could (I presume, by spiking levels of dopamine in the brain) actually relieve many of my ADHD and depressive symptoms. Thus, I came to associate sexual activity with 'bad things happening', because I would immediately lose these benefits. Doubtless, there was likely some actual neurological basis for my apparent symptoms (the dopamine crash after orgasm and after eating sugar, which happens to everyone, but may affect people differently, based on their sensitivity).
So essentially, my POIS symptoms were actually the product of a complex psychosomatic reaction, combined with my tendency to overindulge and ACTUALLY exhaust myself, as well as my depression and ADHD, which made me more vulnerable to fluctuations in dopamine and other neuroendocrines. Note, that feeling demotivated and tired after orgasm is a universal human experience - but again, some are more likely to be sensitive to this effect than others.
Once I got my depression and ADHD sorted and under control, I found that - except if I binged and went overboard with masturbation - the POIS symptoms completely vanished. I now experience a normal level of tiredness after orgasm, but nothing like extreme brain fog or dysarthria or anything like that.
Additionally - and this is perhaps going a bit deeper - I struggled with severe social anxiety and chronic depression growing up and as a result, when I was exposed to "NoFap" and "Semen Retention" during my formative years, I ended up kind of obsessing over it. It fucked up my sexuality and I got sucked into the philosophy. This was because, not only was I impulsive and lacked self-control, but also, the "benefits" like increased confidence were really appealing to me, and I could see that there was SOME TRUTH to the claims being made. So I developed an early aversion to masturbation, which likely led to the development of a psychosomatic illness.
So yeah - my point is that POIS likely does have some roots in actual physical causes, namely spikes in things like dopamine, prolactin, testosterone etc. If you have issues with your brain/body that may affect these (e.g., ADHD (low dopamine), low testosterone levels, prolactemia, depression (low serotonin/dopamine), OCD (low serotonin), anxiety (low serotonin and possibly dopamine)), then you are perhaps more likely to be sensitive to these changes than the average person, and may present with increased "POIS-like symptoms" related to cognition. It is likely that past experiences and shame around sexuality also contribute. Porn or sex addiction may also be a genuine cause of the symptoms because you stimulate your body to an unnatural and unsustainable level.
Also, having OCD-like obsessions may be a contributing factor to POIS' development. You are likely to be very anxious and worried about yourself, and will excessively check your own mental state and/or physical state after having an orgasm. If you feel that you are tired or demotivated (which is normal), your OCD brain may overblow how bad these things feel - similar to the mechanisms seen in anorexia and body dysmorphia - and convince yourself that you have a problem, when you actually, in fact, do not.
As for the allergy hypothesis - it is hard to see why orgasming would lead to an allergic reaction. Some theories state its an autoimmune reaction to one's own semen, but a study showed that non-POIS individuals have the same reactions to skin-prick tests as those who stated that they had POIS. I would also add that allergies are more common than usual among people with depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism etc, so the apparently elevated presence of general allergies among the POIS population may be a product of this fact, rather than pointing towards an increased likelihood of being allergic to orgasms as well as peanuts, shellfish, pollen etc. Essentially, no one really knows why people with mental health conditions are more susceptible to allergies but that's just the way it is. Allergies are also way more common than you think, a substantial proportion of the general population has hay fever for example.
Final point: something similar has been observed in Indian psychiatry. There's a condition called "Dhat Syndrome" which is understood to be purely psychosomatic in nature. It is treated with CBT and antidepressants. Basically, in Hindu scriptures, sexuality is treated as something that is "vital" and "spilling one's seed" is seen as bad. Thus, people in India are more likely to develop complexes and shame around sex/masturbation because of cultural messaging, which affects the subconscious, and may be a contributing factor to the development of this psychosomatic disease.
TD;LR - POIS is almost certainly a psychosomatic disorder, not a physical one (imo). It is likely a manifestation of deeper psychological issues. There is some truth in saying that orgasm leads to changes in neurochemicals and hormones and may thus produce certain psychological, or even physical, effects in people. However, these alone are unlikely to cause the degree of symptoms experienced by sufferers of "POIS", because they are a normal part of human biology. Nonetheless, certain individuals may be more sensitive to alterations in dopamine/testosterone/prolactin due to certain neurological conditions, hormone deficiencies, or mental health issues like depression/OCD.

2023.06.09 20:25 troll_berserker Black Lotus is a safe unban, and here's why

Black Lotus is card disadvantage, can't be played in Creativity or Cascade without disrupting the combo, only taps for 1 color so it doesn't help cast Omnath, makes aggro decks run out of steam faster, and control decks would rather hit their land drops every turn.
Unfair decks like Belcher and Oops All Spells that would want such a card aren't bad because they're slow; they are bad because they are inconsistent, and Black Lotus does not help them find their key combo pieces. In fact, Black Lotus would just make such decks even more vulnerable to hate such as [[Stony Silence]] and [[Void Winnower]]. (Zero is even.)
To be fair, there could be specific cards that become more powerful with Black Lotus in the format. To address this, I propose that we instead ban all 4 mana value spells that can be cast off Lotus on turn 1, including but not limited to [[Jace, the Mind Sculptor]], [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]], [[Collar the Culprit]], and [[Axebane Beast]].
Some imbeciles may point to Vintage play rates of Black Lotus as a reason why it would be too strong for Modern, but you numbnuts all don't realize that Vintage and Modern are fundamentally different formats and require different answers. Take for example Trinisphere and Narset Parter of Veils, cards that are both restricted in Vintage but are fully legal in Modern at 4 copies. Just because Black Lotus is good in Vintage DOES NOT automatically mean that it would be good in Modern.
My final verdict: Black Lotus needs testing for Modern. I'm offering any LGS who wants to run tournaments where Black Lotus is legal a chance to enter my private study; all I ask of you is to just send to my Venmo a small finder's fee of 80% of the event proceeds and title your event "troll_berserker presents: True Modern For The High IQ, Such As troll_berserker Who Is An Absolute Genius."
I've spent the last 7 years writing this post, so you're morally and legally obligated to take my post seriously and not call me a troll.
Tl;dr: Read my whole post.

Any idea what this all means?
My son has been having severe health issues. We are running tests on him now. Out of curiosity, I submitted my Ancestry raw DNA information for analysis to see if I may have passed health issues on to him. These results look a bit scary, but I have not idea what any of it means. Can anyone summarize?

2023.06.09 20:23 Pinappologist Each time bathroom door closes, my internet connection gets cut off

Hi everyone.
As mentioned in the title, I have a problem with my internet connection.
I have Google WiFi mesh router placed in my room. In general, we have 3 wi-fi points: the main router (idk what is it, maybe something Chinese provider obliged us to use), which is located in the main room of our apartment, Google router just near it, and the second Google router in my room in the farthest point of the apartment, working not by mesh but by physically connected wire which goes from the main room, on the upper wall, through the wall on top of my doorframe (not in the doorframe, nothing presses on the wire, etc) and then just follows the wall until my table, on which the router stands.
My room is right in front of the bathroom, like, in this scheme the _ would be my door and the would be bathroom door: _Each time someone closes the door (and exactly closes, meaning the door hits the frame), my internet connection drops for at least 10 seconds and my Google router starts flashing red until the connection is restored.
Maybe it's not important, but when we just moved in, when someone closed any of the bedroom-zone doors (which is my door, my parent's bedroom door and bathroom door), the doors on the other side of the corridor used to open (it's not the case right now, out of the two doors which opened we sealed one and found a fix for the other). There might be some sort of vibration going through the wall? No idea.
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance!
P.S: also please feel free to ask technical questions and ask for technical tests, I'm majoring in IT and this sort of thing isn't difficult for me

2023.06.09 20:22 PokerPlayer42069 Is It Worth It To Use a Slot Plus Casino No Deposit Code?

In the world of online casinos, promotions and bonuses play a significant role in attracting and retaining players. One popular type of promotion offered by many casinos, including Slot Plus, is the no deposit bonus. This type of bonus allows players to enjoy the casino's games without having to make an initial deposit. Instead, players can use a special no deposit code to unlock the bonus. But is it worth it to use a Slot Plus casino no deposit code? In this article, we will explore the advantages and considerations of utilizing a no deposit code at Slot Plus.
One of the primary advantages of using a Slot Plus casino no code deposit is the opportunity to try out the casino's games without risking your own money. This can be particularly appealing to new players who want to get a feel for the casino's software, game selection, and overall user experience. By using a no deposit code, players can explore the various games available at Slot Plus and determine if they enjoy the platform before committing any of their funds.
Another advantage of utilizing a no deposit code is the potential to win real money without making a deposit. While no deposit bonuses often come with certain terms and conditions, such as wagering requirements, they still provide players with the chance to land winning combinations and withdraw their winnings. This aspect adds an extra layer of excitement and incentive for players who prefer to test their luck without using their own funds.
Additionally, using a Slot Plus casino no deposit code can serve as a valuable learning experience. Players can familiarize themselves with the casino's interface, navigation, and gaming mechanics without any financial risk. This allows them to experiment with different strategies, understand the rules of various games, and gain confidence in their gameplay. By taking advantage of the no deposit code, players can develop their skills and knowledge before deciding to make a deposit and play with real money.
It's important to note that while a no deposit code offers several advantages, there are also considerations to keep in mind. Firstly, most no deposit bonuses come with wagering requirements. These requirements stipulate the number of times a player must wager the bonus amount before being eligible to withdraw any winnings. It's crucial for players to thoroughly read and understand the terms and conditions associated with the no deposit code to ensure they can meet the wagering requirements within the specified timeframe.
Furthermore, some no deposit codes may have restrictions on the games that can be played using the bonus funds. Certain games may contribute differently to the wagering requirements or may be entirely excluded from the bonus offer. Players should review the terms and conditions to ensure their favorite games are eligible for use with the no deposit code. This ensures a more tailored and enjoyable gaming experience.
While the allure of a no deposit code is undeniable, it's essential to approach it with realistic expectations. No deposit bonuses are typically smaller in value compared to deposit-based bonuses. Therefore, players should not expect to generate substantial winnings solely from a no deposit bonus. However, they can still provide a valuable opportunity to enjoy some free gameplay and potentially boost one's bankroll.
In conclusion, utilizing a Slot Plus casino no deposit code can be worthwhile for players looking to explore the casino's offerings risk-free, potentially win real money, and gain valuable gaming experience. The no deposit code allows players to test the waters, try out different games, and familiarize themselves with the casino's features without making an initial deposit. However, players should carefully review the terms and conditions, including wagering requirements and game restrictions, to make an informed decision. By understanding the limitations and managing expectations, players can make the most of the no deposit code and enjoy an exciting online casino experience at Slot Plus.

2023.06.09 20:20 Utarded1 Wife’s interest in nude beach

I am looking for some advice/insight. My wife and I recently went on a 20-year anniversary trip. As part of the vacation, we spent two days in Miami - one on the front end of a cruise and another on the back end. On the back end, my wife made a comment that she regretted not being able to go to the nude beach in Miami to at least walk around topless. Due to our plans, there was not time.
The short version of a long backstory is that we were friends for almost a decade before marrying, so I have known her for a long time. Only recently has she become more open to new experiences. She has always been a prude, her word not mine. In the last year she has had a sexual awakening of sorts, which has been great. However, this is the first time anything like being nude in public has come up. She indicated that the appeal is to be seen by other, which surprised me. It was a good surprise but surprising all the same.
From my point of view, I think it is great that she is open to telling me what she wants to do and is excited about actually doing it. I am largely indifferent to going to a nude beach or any other space with public nudity. My desire is to be a supportive spouse. To that end I have a few questions.
First, where could we go for her to explore this side of herself? We do not live on the coast. We live out West in the mountains. Perhaps that would work? The issue is that she wants to be seen, meaning that the point is to be a bit of an exhibitionist. Second, she asked me how I felt about being seen by other men. I didn’t know what to make of the question. My response was that I am fine with it. She is very attractive by any objective standard. Of course people will notice her. I of course did and still do. She is in her mid-40s but looks 15 years younger with an amazing figure. I couldn’t tell if the question was a test or to legitimately ask me if I would be alright with it. Any insight would be great. Lastly, what resources are good regarding learning about etiquette? I have to plead ignorance. My public nudity experience is limited to a nude beach in Spain when I was 18. Thanks in advance to those who respond.

2023.06.09 20:19 Scholastico Theor(ies) About the Flamekeepers

I have three theories about the Flamekeepers revealed in the most recent episode (s01ep07), both about who the Flamekeepers are in relation to the age of the Silo
Note that I've never read the books, so this is just my immediate speculation after I watched it. But first I'm gonna establish some things first:
What We Know:
Therefore, I posit two possibilities:
  1. The silo is younger than people say it is. Gloria talked about the rebellion and the existence of the Flamekeepers to Jules as if it happened a generation ago. Considering that George's mother was the last of her kind that she knew, this could mean that the rebellion was part of the Flamekeeper's living memory. This also means that the oppression of the Silo was effective enough to rewrite everything so that everyone would buy into what they want people to think. That's one reason that's in favour of this theory. But one reason against it is the eugenics. Which leads me to the second alternative theory..
  2. The Flamekeepers are older than they look. The reason those in charge of the Silo want the Flamekeepers to die out is because they are humans who have genetically altered genes that extend their lifespan. This makes sense if one buys into the age of the Silo being ~+150 years. They have longer lifespans, therefore have memories from the before time. The Silo wanted them to die out because they want to reset the lifespan of the population to levels that are the same as our own today, in addition to controlling them. Less elders means less knowledge passed down. This could be the reason for the eugenics thing
  3. The Flamekeepers are (figuratively) an underground movement. Let's say the years since the rebellion mentioned in the first episode were correct. This means that the Flamekeepers were very effective in covering their tracks and hiding from the "janitors". They passed down their secret knowledge down the generations, but the Silo keeps weeding and wiping them out in the process, thus George's mother being one of the last. With regards to the eugenics, I would assume it's like if the Khmer Rouge suddenly discovered the science of genetics and crazily assumed that dissent against authority is genetically passed down from one generation to the next.
Those are my theories. If any of these three are actually book spoilers it either was a coincidence or I'm really good at putting pieces together. And book readers please don't say if any one of these is in the books. Otherwise at least give very vague hints about them. I'd rather be surprised than proven right haha.

2023.06.09 20:19 TheYankee17762 How to get data from a hard drive with a broken port?

So, I used to carry a portable hard drive in my bag for a long while. Due to the fact that I would live the wire plugged into the portable hard drive as I would carry it around, the port that connects the wire to the external hard drive is very busted. For some reason the little blue light that turns on when it recieves power is on but the flash that it does when it connects with a computer never happens no matter how much I play around with it.
From my knowledge, the hard drive itself is not damaged so if I can get it out, I should be good as long as there's another connector. The only issue is that the case seems to be unopenable. I was thinking of going to a data recovery center but as a broke college kid, that means that a large chunk of my savings are going down the drain, so if possible I hope to fix myself.
What can I do to get the data from that and transfer it to a new hard drive?

2023.06.09 20:13 AutismToTheLetter Why do I get obsessed about red traffic lights and traffic rules in general after a traffic fine? Warning: Schizophrenic talking.

"Traffic jams are necessary and safe." Is this opinion a delusion, a disorganized thought or it is real?
Speeding kills. So fatal accidents are less likely to happen in traffic jams where speeds are near 0. It is also safe for pedestrians to traverse freely through the temporary made carpark.
Traffic jams are a natural symptom of humanity's lifestyle inflation of having more speed, more space and more productivity. They act as a necessary control mechanism to stop our unsustainable economic growth.
Stop means Stop, Do you understand, mr intruder.
I must stop there until light changes to green, even if it means a long time or indefintely. You never know if a parked car or car from the blind spot suddenly lights up and accelerates fast on the green. Remember, safety is the top priority and we all must obey the traffic law.
Red light says: "I am the red light. I deserve respect. I command the safety of physical movement. Don't pass this boundary or else you might die... You must stop. You must slow down. you should idle. you should be delayed. you should waste time. This is so meaningful, a quest for testing patience and letting go of goals and disappointments."
It is also better to be late rather than be in a hurry to a destination.

2023.06.09 20:08 TheNewDevil92 Don't know what I'm doing wrong

I (30M) am recently trying dating online and IRL. And to be honest it has been somewhat frustrating for multiple reasons.
I am 6 ft tall, I am somewhat handsome, I have a good paying job. I have a car and knowledge of all the good places in my city. I also know how to use the bus. I am about to buy a house. I would like to get married and have kids. I am ambivert. Mostly related to the geek side of things. I have ease of speech and have spoken several times in events and reunions so I am pretty confident. I dress as cleanly as possible and my personal hygiene is good.
I got impeccable reputation from work and other places, people keep constantly saying I'm a good man in most places.
I'm looking for something serious. As in a relationship that can end in marriage. (With several years of travel and fun things before of course, I clarify that I am not a completely trad guy but I stick to that role as much as I can, I am flexibl).
Here's my experience in those two settings:
1: OLD
Basically I am that wierd guy that ACTUALLY gets matches from girls (tinder, bumble) (more than 10 per month or so) but those matches basically mean nothing. Generally I get a good conversation out of most girls but when I ask them out to actually talk they start ghosting me. It's just a plain waste of time most cases.
The only times I've actually went out with two out of all my matches the girls were really boring.... They didn't wanna share a lot of details about them and were basically the stereotype of girl who only wanted a free meal. Super bad.
2: Physical places
I attend mostly cosplay events geek stuff of all kinds. Almost every girl I hang around has a boyfriend (objectively speaking because I am NOT looking for someone who's indecisive of it's partner and doesn't want to end the relationship before getting into another) so they are strictly in all sense of the word FRIENDS or ACQUAINTANCES (multiple cases). Getting that out of the way there were a few girls that are single that I've invited to hang out and chat...
Another place I've tried to look for is in the (most recent) workplace, and here LITERALLY all girls have a boyfriend with relationships that have lasted up to 6 years, some 3 years some around that number (which I don't particularly would like... If I'm lasting that long I'd be commiting btw).
And I do shooting sports in my country which is really hard compared to doing in it in a country like the USA but usually old men hang in there. No girls at all.
I also go to the gym but I have the same problem as in the workplace. Everyone is taken. Actually the 100% of girls.
My two most recent cases were:
1.- I talked a lot with this girl at the cosplay events and at a friend's house. She said that she would love to hang out and find out more about me. So I invited her over (for 3 weeks, messaged her once a week telling her if she wanted to hang out to different places) and she always had an excuse.
(Those being: I have a cold, I am attending to a church event, my aunt's birthday)
I didn't quite believed it but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. After those 3 times I stopped asking her and told her to call me when she had time.
2.- Another girl I met at my previous workplace. We've been messaging quite a while but she seems too, to always puts up an excuse similarity to the other girl (again, my policy is that usually I stop asking after 3 times tops) This girl has put up an excuse two times already saying "I'll come if I end up this other business first" that business being another thing she had with her friends.
The thing is that they seem to have interest but when they're home they lose it (what I'm perceiving is mostly lazyness and a lack of interest).
Is there anyway I can change this streak of luck? I really hate talking to a girl, saying I want to get to know her more (literally opening my feelings which feels shameful and makes me feel vulnerable every time) and then getting excuses for the reasons they can't or being downright ghosted.
What am I doing wrong? What can I change?

2023.06.09 20:08 tomsrobots For book readers: I am defending the pacing of the show

This show is very interesting to me because there is a real disconnect between the reactions of those who have read the books and those who are experiencing the Silo world for the first time. Reading both of the episode threads each week is fascinating. The book reader threads are filled with complaints the show is moving too slowly and the show has added too many elements that don't ultimately matter. The non-book reader threads have a completely different tone. There's excitement. There's speculation. There's investment. This is exactly what you want out of a TV show!
My theory for the different reactions stems from the pre-knowledge of the big reveal at the end of the season. The non-book reader threads are highly focused on one core question - is it safe out there? Readers of the book know better this isn't even the interesting question. Whether it's safe out there is less important than knowing they are just one of many silos and there's a master silo with a button that can wipe them out if they misbehave.
When you know the big overarching threat, then a couple of murders in the silo or some relics feel, well, trite. It doesn't matter because we know the people in the Silo don't really control their own destiny. But to someone without this knowledge it helps contain the world in a way that makes the audience hyperfocused on the day-to-day struggles of the people in the Silo. It makes the world feel small which means that final shot when Juliette gets to the top of a dune and discovers she's just one of 50 holes in the ground will make for an absolutely jaw dropping moment. The wold is so much bigger than anyone expected. I know it's coming and I already know it's going to send chills down my spine.
I think it's worth reflecting on the book itself and how little happens before Juliette is sent out to clean. When you consider the trilogy as a whole, Juliette cleaning really is the beginning of the story. It's the inciting incident which set all other plot beats in motion. Not only did a silo not clean, but someone made it to another Silo and survived. On top of that, she's a wicked smart engineer and knows how to get things done...and she's mad as hell.
All of the backstory we've received of Juliette is priming her for who she will become at the end of this season. It might feel like a slog now, but it will pay dividends. We already know who Juliette is - she's hardheaded, pragmatic, and difficult to get along with. So when she sees what has been done to not only her Silo, but tens of other Silos, he progression into relentless enemy to the people who put them there is going to be immediately understood.
Enjoy the ride. This show is going to be a good one.

2023.06.09 20:08 sydney66643 Whole family just got tested covid positive except me🤟

Now I gotta quarentine myself from them 😭
I mean it’s a W for my immune system, I never get sick with anything. But damn idk what I’m gonna do...
My dad brought home covid from Europe. He was quarentining, but my mom started feeling sick but the at home tests came back negative. She went out and got a better test, turns out she actually has it and spread it to the rest of my family. I am the lone survivor 💔

2023.06.09 20:05 marcwithers What is going on?

5+ years ago, when I changed careers and became a frontend engineer I thought things would be easier. Today, after nearly 1.5 years of being unemployed (quit my last job due to burnout), I'm at my wit's end and don't know if I'm just much, much stupider than I think or if the (European) market is really just shit for non-seniors.
I'm perfectly capable, imho, but after countless applications and rejections, I'm in total shock and despair, especially after having received another rejection this morning where I have totally matching experience and went above and beyond for the coding challenge (which they say "should only take a few hours", took me nearly a week, and I did all the requirements + bonus tasks) only to get BS feedback like "you haven't provided instructions on how to run the app locally" when there's literally a "How to run" section in my PR description or talking about something I could've done differently when I also explicitly mention this in my PR and give the reason why I did not take that approach.
It feels like they barely read my comments, made stupid assumptions, and said I seem to "lack basic JS knowledge" because I'm passing an onBlur callback as a prop. How the f does that mean I lack basic JS knowledge???
Anyway, sorry for the rant but I just need to vent, this is getting stupid. I don't know what to do with my life anymore.
tl;Dr Am I just an enormous idiot or are other software engineers also struggling to find a decent job these days????

2023.06.09 20:03 blackcyborg009 Noob question regarding Singularity and Plurality in the Japanese

I was going through my practice exercises.....when this example came up: きれいなお土産を買いました。(Kirei Na O Miyage O Kai Mashi Ta) The English translation said: "I bought a pretty souvenir"
I had a thought: As a novice Japanese language learner (currently at Chapter 3 of the Genki I textbook), how does the Japanese language deal with Singularity and Plurality (especially in this case). Also, since "tachi" and "ra" only applies to people or animate objects, what can we use for say inanimate things? Can we put like 多い 【おおい】(ooi) OR 沢山 【たくさん】(takusan) somewhere there to indicate that I didn't just buy one souvenir but rather that I bought more than one souvenir.
P.S. Did some digging and a similar question was posted many years ago by a Reddit user named u/evandamastah on the /Linguistics / Reddit Linguistics board. This was the question: "In languages that lack morphological markers for things like plural, definiteness, etc., are they still distinguished in speakers' minds? This might be a little bit of a sapir-whorf debate, but my question is essentially pretty simple, I think. It came to mind when thinking about Japanese the other night - in Japanese, 猫 /neko/ alone can mean 'cat' in any of the following forms: the cat, a cat, cats, the cats, some cats. However, although that distinction is not common in most nouns, it is present in some pronouns and nouns, such as 彼 /kare/ vs 彼ら /karera/, or 私 /watasi/ and 私たち /watasitati/. My question is although this distinction is not morphologically marked in normal nouns, does it still exist in the speakers minds? I'm not even sure if this would matter, and I am not sure how one might test for it. But when a Japanese speaker sees three cats and says 猫, does he assign plurality to that word even though it may be unmarked?"
Also: If there are any Linguists, Polyglots or Native Japanese here , please feel free to chime in as well =)
