How to deal with BS-detector interviewers despite misinterpretations ?

2023.06.06 19:25 SweetStrawberry4U How to deal with BS-detector interviewers despite misinterpretations ?

I've been working as an Android Engineer for well over 12 years now, with an overall experience of 19 years, and I still can't.
Some anecdotes here, although two entirely different interviews and two entirely different interviewers.
Interview-1
  1. What can you do to improve User experience on the main-page / home-page or dashboard, whatever you might want to call it, in an app ? Particularly in places where the network connectivity is weak, say free wifi in a coffee-shop. When there's a lot of people connected to the same wifi and it slows-down significantly, we still want smooth and quick user-experience in our app. ( of course, this was a retail client, but then, such a broad question by an experienced interviewer who introduced himself as an Architect would be business-domain specific or cross-business generality ? )
My Answer was somewhat in these lines - Fetching all the data at once, which will certainly take time just hypothetically, theoritically, vaguely considering the response json size, all the while displaying a loading indicator, 15 seconds, 45 seconds etc, is what a poor user experience would be. So, we break-up that huge json into multiple different components, different API end-points and display piece-by-piece. As and how these multiple response json are received by the app asynchronously, we halt the loading indicator and begin displaying each component stand-alone all by itself. It's like, first we display category-2 because the json arrived first, then category-4, then we do custom animation to slide-down category-4 and display category-3, and finally when category-1 arrives, we do the same custom animation to slide-down category-2 and display category-1. something in those lines.
  1. Follow-up question - But that's the problem. we cannot break-up the response json ? The listings within all categories are all together, and each list-item further has at least 1 image, because it's a saleable item.
Now I get it, this is a retail app specific question. If so, each image is fetched independently after all list-items are received and displayed. As in, images are fetched AFTER display is rendered. One optimization I can think of is to begin fetching images asynchronously, each for each list-item, as soon as the main-response is received, without waiting until the full home-page / dashboard is displayed to the User.
  1. Further follow-up question. That doesn't answer my question, as in improving User-experience significantly ? What if the list is way very large, like 200 or even 500 items ? As many images we are fetching asynchronously. So each image-area in the UI is either displaying a loading indicator or some static back-up image of some sort. Still a very poor user-experience.
Thinking to myself that clearly, no satisfactory answer as yet about good user-experience on the home-screen in a poor network connectivity scenario. How about Pagination ( not a very different answer from the original answer, breaking up the one main json, just pages now ) ? Why not display 20 or 30 items only, all categories but few items each, allowing User to navigate to a category detailed-list page, that too will have pagination.
  1. The whole problem lies in fetching large data, and on top of it, rendering high-quality images, in a poor network connectivity location. Why not just send latest or the least network connectivity speeds to the image server so it can respond with appropriate quality low memory foot-print image bytes ? Someone who's worked with Android for over a decade should have identified this as a problem and should be explaining this.
Me thinking again ( facepalm !! whatever happened to scalar and vector graphics support in Android ? Always fetch the least memory foot-print image from the servers under any network connectivity scenario, and image-rendering libraries will do their part in the app ? how did we even move from optimizing dashboard experience to sending network connectivity speeds to the servers ? when, and how was I supposed to guess that in this entire conversation ? Is this even an interview question, or a technical detailed brain-storming in an org invoving stake-holders, backend engineers, api-engineers.. yada yada yada... This would be an entire project right within itself.)
  1. Same interview, another question. What is better, Dagger-2 or Service-Locator for Dependency Management ?
If Dagger is done correctly then that is better. The big problem is that Modules and dependencies via components and sub-components are not declared correctly, mostly what I have experienced. PaymentsViewModel can receive a LoginRepository or LoginUseCase injectable, although they are completely unrelated, and there is absolutely never a scenario that they will interact ever. Service-Locator just bloats the memory. A service-locator has mappings from class / interface to it's concrete-instance, or a factory-instance that will generate the concrete-instance and such. Anyways, service-locator is prepared ready for use by pre-instantiating it's components, or lazy-instantiations, eitherways once it's in there, it is there. The larger the app code-base, the bigger the service-locators become, then there will be service-locators for service-locators.
  1. Dagger-2 is inefficient because reclaiming memory is a mess, in fact that doesn't happen even. Also, instantiating injections at run-time is slower. Eitherways it's a performance hit. Service-locator can be programmatically customized for better memory management. I'd expect someone with over a decade of experience... yada yada yada....
Facepalm again !!! Aren't Kotlin and Android advocating strongly for fly-weight instantiations on-the-go, and leave it up for the GC, which is what Dagger-2 follows ? Isn't Dagger-2 just generated code for establishing a chain-of-objects, and has nothing to do with instance retaining at run-time unlike Service Locators, at least when implemented correctly ? A ViewModel isn't instantiated and unavailable unless the Fragment is instantiated that needs it as an injectable, and so the rest of the chain-of-objects, repository or use-case, retrofit-api etc ? And don't this entire chain-of-objects clear their memory as soon as the Fragment is destroyed, which is bound to happen as soon as it is no longer associated with it's parent activity fragment-manager ? If this is about Bindings and such, isn't Dagger-2 suggesting to avoid it ? And Service-Locator is more efficient than Dagger-2, which is what Bindings are in Dagger-2 ? Yeah, get me out of here.
Interview-2
  1. what is the difference between native and hybrid apps ?
I have never ever worked with hybrid, only native, but here goes - Native apps use native development practices - SDK, guidelines, syncs well with the device etc. Hybrid uses other thirdparty development practices, typically javascript based, that then generates native apps, typically losing out on the most recent and latest components. Native works great with device system api such as BLE, camera, mic, volume etc, while Hybrid, at least as far as the developer community says, doesn't integrate that seamlessly.
  1. No you are describing everything about crossplatform apps.
Wait, isn't hybrid intended for crossplatform. So are hybrid and crossplatform also different ? how so ?Isn't KMM intended as crossplatform for iOS ? Isn't React-framework hybrid because isn't it intended for cross-platform, like same code-base for all three web, iOS and Android apps ?
  1. Anyways, moving on. what are the sdk components in Android ?
Sdk components ? Like, Gradle, AGP, annotation-processors like aapt, kapt ?
  1. There are 7 sdk components in Android.
7 ? Is this a google search question ?
  1. Nevermind. What is Android architecture ?
Fundamentally, Android is MVC.
  1. No, MVC is structural pattern.
MVC is not a design pattern. It is an Architecture Pattern. Other types, that are more fine-grained than MVC are MVP, MVVM, VIPER, Redux but they all are again MVC right in the core of implementation. Without MVC no enterprise pattern exists.
  1. But that's not what I am asking. Anyways, what frameworks have you used ?
Frameworks like dependency libraries for a specific functionality and purpose ? Okhttp3 for network handshakes, retrofit for RESTful API on top of OkHttp3, Dagger-2 for dependency-management.
  1. No, intent is a framework in Android. Just like that, what other frameworks have you used ?
Yeah, in the interest of each other's time, we should end this meeting. Thinking to myself ( way too many interpretation and miscommunication issues, right from the start. Are terminology and nomenclature really industry-standard ? Are "components" and "frameworks" interchangeable ? Are "frameworks" not the same as "libraries" ? Facepalm !!
TLDR ;-
Been working as a Contractor, for about 15 years now, overall about 2 decades of experience. Out of a project for 5 weeks now, glad I am currently on a GC-EAD. I hate tech interviews of all kinds.
Thanks for reading through this rant !!

2023.06.06 18:22 Waelder TCF PATCH 3.4.0 - 07th June 2023

TCF PATCH 3.4.0 - 07th June 2023
Read the patchnotes in the game's website: https://thecycle.game/news-and-media/the-cycle-frontier-patch-3-4-0
The game will go into maintenance tomorrow 7th June 2023 at 08:00am CEST and the game will be inaccessible for a few hours.
Hello Prospectors!
Patch 3.4.0 has been cooking behind the scenes for a little while now, and it's finally ready to be served. Complete with seasonings, a tall drink, and a few changes that might catch your interest, we're following up on some changes from 3.2 and 3.3 while also addressing some issues that have been highlighted by our community. On the menu today will be additional AI changes, a balance pass on some of our early game weapons, the usual stomping of a few pesky bugs and exploits, an adjustment to Tharis storm cycles, and yes, an adjustment to Progenitor Slags. We recently discussed in our Discord Server that we're taking some time to focus on repaying technical debts and relooking into systems to have more flexibility with our code in order to make things more smooth, however a lot of these things are not necessarily "player-facing" so we will use these notes to focus on changes that you will see and experience directly within the game. As always, be sure to let us know what you think of the new changes after you've downloaded the new update, and we will continue to monitor and address them as soon as we can. Onto the notes!

Balancing/Weapons

Weapon Balance, my old friend, it's nice to see you again! As a fun fact from our data, the three weapons that are the most requested to receive a balance pass are the Manticore, AR-55, and C-32 Bolt Action. This is something that we are always investigating and keeping tabs on behind the scenes, but after our feedback from the 3.2 patch, it seemed there were a few weapons that needed a bit more than just a damage value changed, so we've made a few more changes to lightly poke the meta to encourage a nice mix of weapons and keep things feeling fresh with your encounters. The vision that is planted in our brains here is to make sure our early game weapons feel like early game weapons without nerfing them into the ground or making them unusable in engagements with higher-geared players. However, with a TTK this short, sometimes that perfect balance can be hard to find. Having said that, minor changes are the plan for this one, let us know what you think!
Manticore (MK1 & MK2):
  • Magazine size: 24 -> 22
  • Headshot multiplier: 1.5 -> 1.4
AR-55(Rusty, MK1 & MK2):
  • Projectile speed: 36400 -> 34200
PDW (Rusty, MK1 & MK2):
  • Increased hip shot spread by 15%
  • Damage falloff multiplier: 0.7 -> 0.6
C32(MK1 & MK2):
  • Damage falloff multiplier: 1.0 -> 0.7

Matchmaking Changes

We've heard your feedback that something just doesn't feel quite right, and we've noticed it in our matches as well. In order to address it, we've done some deep dive investigating to answer a few questions: Is matchmaking working as intended? Is "beginner matchmaking" working properly? Now this covers a really wide range of variables and not every player's reported issue can lead to the same outlier in the way our game matchmakes, but we've made some major changes to the way our matchmaking registers and removes players on a server, to prevent server over population, which we believe should fix squad separation issues as well. We intend to continue keeping a close eye on this topic, so please don't hesitate to reach out and let us know if you experience or notice any differences!

Anti-Cheat Improvements

Fighting cheating is our number one priority, and we are aware that for some of our players the current state of the game is not ideal. As with every patch, 3.4.0 will contain various backend improvements and tweaks to our anti-cheat formula. In addition, we have added new systems to the game to help detect and prevent the kinds of cheats we have found to be the most common. While we would love to go into detail about exactly what is being changed, any info we give on our methods is unfortunately information that can be used to circumvent those methods. Regardless, we do expect that these changes should have a noticeable effect on the state of the game, and we will be monitoring them closely after they go live and adjusting them as necessary.
If you would like to contribute to the games anti-cheat efforts, reports are always one of the most useful resources at our teams disposal. Simply sending a report in-game can go a long way, and you can also make use of our #reports-and-appeals channel in our official Discord server if you would like to give some more detailed information to our anti-cheat team or would like to include a video clip with your report.
We hope these changes go a long way towards improving your experience on Fortuna, until next time Prospectors!

Changes

  • Insurance payout timer has been increased from 45 minutes to 6 hours in order to combat a known item duplication exploit
    • This one is a significant change for us, and we discussed methods to address item duplication in a way that was quick and impactful. This change will ensure the game instance has shut down and all players have left the instance before dishing out insurance reimbursements.
    • Additionally and for clarity, players participating in this exploit will receive a ban if they are found to be duplicating items. Don't give into the temptation!
  • We've adjusted tuning of creature proximity senses as a follow up from patch 3.3.0
  • We've adjusted Crusher and Marauder aggro so that disengaging with the fiercest of terrestrial creatures isn't as difficult. No more Jeffs launching interplanetary acid bombs across the map as you run away clutching your last stim
  • Storm cycles on Tharis Island have been shortened by lowering the time between storms from 25 minutes to 21 minutes to make forging feel less tedious. Duration of the storm remains unaffected
  • Slightly increased the probability of receiving Progenitor Slag as a byproduct of forging from 10% to 13%
  • Decreased the required amount of slags for final safe pocket upgrade from 3 to 2
  • Windfall's Shop received some swanky new images to showcase item bundles

  • Fixed an issue that allowed players to move while emoting
  • Fixed an issue with some keybinds not being present when using an AZERTY keyboard. Don't get caught inspecting your weapons too often now!
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the game to crash in the event a Player Report came back with an error
  • Fixed a exploit regarding Free Loadout Runs and claimed insurances
  • Fixed a collision issue with a tree root near Pumpkin Fields and Starport Landing Pad. We're prospectors, not termites
  • Fixed an issue with a weapon's weight being affected by the ammo weight reduction perk.
  • Fixed an issue with the explosive damage perk reducing damage from storm strikes and fauna damage
  • Fixed a visual issue with the "Top Tiktok Howler Creators" decal on the station

Known Issues & Things We Are Working On™

While some of these issues might take a bit longer, we are still investigating and aim to find fixes and address these as soon as we can.
  • We are aware of your feedback that you want to see a default weapon skin setting.
  • We are investigating changes to the process of selling items smoother.
  • Deysnc Issues - we are cautiously keeping an eye on this topic and working with players where possible to investigate these instances.
  • Getting kicked back to the lobby is currently under investigation.
  • We received a bunch of reports that performance has taken a hit in Season 3 and are investigating.
  • Our Welcome Packs descriptions need to be reworded to reflect the disappearance of mandatory wipes.
  • Streaming tools can lead to crashes for some players.
Additionally for those of you who read our little messages at the bottom, Patch 3.5.0 is scheduled for June 28th, so no need to wonder which Wednesday it'll be! Also, you look stellar today!

2023.06.06 17:14 halalharamworld Choosing the Perfect Pool Material

Choosing the Perfect Pool Material

https://preview.redd.it/tadtkiexxe4b1.jpg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1235a4dd20e251c8d5058f0139081554b587ae78
When it comes to building a swimming pool, selecting the right pool material is a crucial decision. The material you choose will not only impact the aesthetics of your pool but also determine its durability, maintenance requirements, and overall cost. With various options available, it's essential to consider your preferences, budget, and long-term goals. In this article, we will guide you through the process of choosing the perfect pool material to help you create the ideal swimming pool for your needs.

Concrete: Versatile and Customizable

Concrete is a popular choice for swimming pool construction due to its versatility and durability. It allows for endless customization options, as it can be shaped and designed according to your specific requirements. Concrete pools can accommodate various design features such as waterfalls, spas, and custom shapes. While initial construction costs may be higher compared to other materials, concrete pools offer long-term durability and can withstand harsh weather conditions. Regular maintenance, such as resealing and resurfacing, is necessary to maintain their appearance and prevent staining or cracking.

Vinyl: Affordable and Low-Maintenance

Vinyl pools are known for their affordability and low-maintenance characteristics. These pools consist of a flexible liner that is installed over a steel or polymer frame. Vinyl liners come in various patterns and designs, providing options to create a visually appealing pool. Vinyl pools are less prone to algae growth and require fewer chemicals compared to other pool materials. However, the vinyl liner may need to be replaced every 10-15 years, adding to the long-term cost. While not as customizable as concrete pools, vinyl pools offer a cost-effective and relatively hassle-free option for those seeking a budget-friendly swimming pool solution.

Fiberglass: Quick Installation and Minimal Maintenance

Fiberglass pools are pre-manufactured pools that are delivered in one piece to your property. They offer a quick installation process and require minimal maintenance. Fiberglass pools have a smooth and non-porous surface, which resists algae growth and minimizes the need for chemical treatments. Their durability and flexibility allow them to withstand shifting soil conditions. However, fiberglass pools are limited in terms of design options and sizes, as they are pre-molded. It's important to ensure proper transportation and installation to avoid any damage during the process. Fiberglass pools are an excellent choice for those looking for a low-maintenance and relatively hassle-free swimming pool option.

Natural Stone: Timeless Elegance and Unique Aesthetics

For a luxurious and visually stunning swimming pool, natural stone is an ideal choice. Natural stone materials, such as granite, limestone, or travertine, offer a timeless appeal and unique aesthetics. Each stone type possesses its own texture, color variations, and natural beauty, providing a one-of-a-kind pool design. Natural stone pools are known for their durability and can withstand harsh weather conditions. However, they require proper sealing and maintenance to prevent staining and ensure longevity. Natural stone pools are an excellent option for homeowners seeking a sophisticated and high-end pool material that adds a touch of elegance to their outdoor space.

Considerations for Choosing the Right Pool Material

When selecting the perfect pool material, there are several factors to consider. First, assess your budget and determine the initial construction cost as well as long-term maintenance expenses. Consider your desired pool design and customization options. Evaluate the durability of the material and its ability to withstand your local climate conditions. Think about the maintenance requirements and the amount of time and effort you are willing to invest in upkeep. Lastly, consider the overall aesthetics and the desired ambiance you want to create with your swimming pool.

Conclusion

When it comes to selecting the perfect pool material, one important consideration is the choice between gunite and shotcrete. Both options, which are forms of concrete, offer durability, versatility, and customization. Gunite refers to a dry mix of cement and sand that is mixed with water at the construction site, while shotcrete is a wet mix that is sprayed onto the pool structure using a hose.
Gunite and shotcrete pools are known for their strength and ability to withstand shifting soil conditions. They can be shaped and designed to match your specific preferences, allowing for creative features and customization. Both materials require proper installation and regular maintenance to ensure their longevity and appearance.
When deciding between gunite and shotcrete pool , it's important to consider factors such as budget, construction timeline, and specific project requirements. Gunite pools are typically more cost-effective and can be constructed more quickly, making them a popular choice for many homeowners. Shotcrete, on the other hand, offers a smoother finish and is often preferred for more intricate designs.
Ultimately, the choice between gunite and shotcrete for your pool material depends on your individual needs and priorities. Consulting with a professional pool builder or contractor can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision based on your specific circumstances.
In conclusion, whether you opt for a gunite or shotcrete pool, both materials offer durability, versatility, and the potential for a stunning swimming pool that will provide years of enjoyment and relaxation.

Mk 2 Electric motor steering mechanism - full motion range of up, down, left and right with motion range customizable to your build's needs
While playing with the original design I made I had a happy little accident and it led to development of this design by a second little happy accident in working with first build. No stabilizer, one wheel, should be enough to get you in the direction you want. I'm using the shrine rod just because I had it on hand. I suspect if you want normal rods are fine. The shrine rods are slightly longer by half a meter if you need more length for your rocker bar.
Motor must be flat to end of rod, rocker rod needs to rock to hit the chassis or another rod.
Metal bar used to rock between wheel's inputless "forward" state which causes the fan to point down and as a result, propel up. Reverse to go down, causing the bar to reverse and rock to point the motor up for downward force). The metal bars act as inhibitors - and define the range of motion (in addition to hitting the chassis at the end. Because the pinion is not inhibited you can do left and right still even when pitched down or up.
With sticking the wheel to the chassis you can affix the two limiter bars to the wheel at whatever heights you find your build needs. If you need more down or more up you can customize this by moving the bars. This is a fiddly process that is likely going to be unique to each build based on propulsion placement, balance and weight.
Untested with two props and not flight tested (let me know how it rolls if you try it). May possibly overpower the wheel with two prop fans with that much thrust.
Best part: reliable and easy to assemble. Happy steering, engineers.

2023.06.06 15:04 IrinaSophia Synaxarion of Saint Hilarion the New, Abbot of Dalmatoi Monastery (June 6th)

Blessed Hilarion was from Cappadocia and lived during the reigns of the emperors Nikephoros the Patrician (802-811), Staurakios (26 July 811–2 October 811), Michael Rhangabe (811-813), the iconoclast Leo the Armenian (813-820), the iconoclast Michael the Stammerer (820-829), and the iconoclast Theophilos (829-842). The name of his father was Peter and his mother was named Theodosia. His father was known to the emperor, because he would give the bread for the imperial table. Having been born from them and nursed, the Saint was sent to school in order to carefully be taught sacred letters. When he was twenty years old, he left father, mother, household, riches and all worldly things according to the gospel prescription, and he entered the Monastery of Xerokepos in Constantinople. Leaving there he went to the Monastery of Dalmatoi, where he received the great and angelic schema.
Possessing obedience, humility and quietude, the renowned one worked in the gardens of the monastery for ten years. Having cleansed his soul of every passion, and illumined it with the virtues like the sun, he then became a wonderworker by divine grace, and he banished from a young man an unclean demon that was troubling him. For this reason the abbot of the monastery made him a Priest, even though it was against his will. When the abbot died a year later, the Saint withdrew from the monastery and went to the place called Opsikion, and there he went to the Monastery of the Katharon. When the monks of his monastery learned of this, they told it to the then Saint Nikephoros the Patriarch, and the patriarch informed the emperor Nikephoros the Patrician, urging him to have the Saint brought back. The Saint was obedient to the urgings of the emperor and the patriarch, he returned, and he became both Abbot and Archimandrite, as it was the custom there to do so, as determined by a Synod. Eight years passed in which the Saint shepherded the flock of Christ as an imitator of Christ. When Emperor Leo the Armenian came to the throne in 813, and rejected the veneration of holy icons, Saint Hilarion was brought before the emperor, and with certain arguments and promises he tried to persuade him to cease the veneration of holy icons. But the Saint rebuked him, calling him an atheist and a new Julian the Apostate.
For this reason the emperor became enraged, and he threatened him that he would deliver him to many unbearable punishments, then he put him in prison. With time the Saint once again stood before him, and spoke the same words to him as he did beforehand. Then he was delivered to the like-minded Patriarch, namely Theodotos Melissenos (815-821), also called Kassiteras, as if he would persuade him. Because the Saint did not give heed to him, he was shut in a dark prison for many days causing him to suffer. It was also ordered that he be given neither bread, nor water nor any other food. When his monks and disciples heard this, they went to the emperor saying: "Give us our shepherd, O Emperor, and after a short while we will take it upon ourselves to do your will." The emperor was outwitted by this promise, and soon after gave them the Saint. Because the Saint tarried in his monastery, and received little rest due to his former sufferings, he was liberated from his hunger, to which he was subject in prison. When the emperor saw that the monks did not pay their promise, but rather mocked him, for this reason he punished the monks and had the Saint imprisoned. Then he sent him to the Monastery of Phoneos, which is found at the corner of the City, and there he was imprisoned for six months, that he may suffer more, for the abbot of this monastery was a harsh man, savage and without compassion.
The emperor then had the Saint brought to the imperial palace, and he tempted him with flatteries in order to beguile him. Not giving heed, the Saint was ordered to be imprisoned in the Monastery of Kyklobios. After two years and six months the Saint was removed from there, and he was imprisoned in the prison called Noumera. There he was harshly flogged, and was exiled to the fortress called Protilion. Because Leo the Armenian was killed with a knife, in the same church in which he mocked and cast to the earth the holy icon of Christ, and having cast away his wicked soul, Michael the Stammerer became emperor in 820, and the Saint was released from prison. A Christian woman gave him hospitality from her own substance, and she served him for seven years.
When the Stammerer's son, Theophilos the iconoclast became emperor in 829, the sinner gathered all the former Confessors on behalf of the holy icons, and had them imprisoned. Then the blessed Hilarion was examined, to persuade him to embrace the imperial order. Because the Saint rebuked Theophilos as an atheist and a quack, he was made to carry on his back one hundred and seventeen pieces of wood, then he was exiled to the island of Aphousia, which is near Alona, and is under the Archbishop of Proikonisos. There the Saint dug out a rock, and he made a small and narrow cell. There also by his prayers he brought forth water, and he spent eight years there. When Theophilos died and his wife Theodora gathered all the Confessors and Venerable Fathers in Constantinople from their places of exile, and having established and upheld Orthodoxy through the restoration and veneration of the holy icons, then Saint Hilarion was also released from exile, received back his monastery, and shined with miracles. He lived three years after this, and in a God-pleasing manner he oversaw his disciples, then he departed to the Lord, at the age of seventy in 845.

2023.06.06 15:00 IrinaSophia Synaxarion of Saint Hilarion the New, Abbot of Dalmatoi Monastery (June 6th)

Africa Rework Proposal: Bêafrîka, Katanga, and the Mercenary Kingdoms of Africa
(This is part of a continuing series, links to which will be provided in the comments below)
Bêafrîka State: Bob Denard, Jean-Bédel Bokassa and the mercenary state.
The term “warlord” has been abused by many as a catch all term for any armed african group. It brings to mind images of a barbaric, violent oaf seeking to enrich themselves with trinkets and money off the back of their military extortion: an example of the primitive and bloodthirsty nature of the african. This is certainly the purpose of the term for the Germans, who seek to paint all native armed resistance in this light in order to justify their own return to the continent. But despite this abuse of the term, and its unjust application, it is not made up out of whole cloth: bandits, criminal gangs and short sighted thugs do exist among the africans as they do in all people, and the chaos of the German collapse has given these characters the opportunity of a lifetime. In the former RK Zentralafrika this is seen most clearly in the “mercenary state” of Bêafrîka.
Borders of a successful Bêafrîka. Many post-colonial African nations are accused of being artificial: random lines drawn on a map for the convenience of foreigners, and thus doomed to be either failures or exploitive facades. The truth of this statement is debatable: what makes a nation “organic”, is it truly critical that one be so? Are the struggles of new African nations so easily encapsulated? The argument goes on but all will agree on this: Bêafrîka is an utterly artificial and extractive state which can only begrudgingly be called a nation at all.
The north-west of Zentralafrika has always been something of a hodgepodge. The initial conquest of the area from the Free French meant the roll back of any “nation building” expenditures in favor of reverting back to the old company rule. Corvee slavery, plantations and almost non-existent infrastructure was the rule even under the French, and as such the transition to German ownership was almost seamless. If the average native african noticed a difference at all it was in the flags and helmets of the whites who terrorized them: their managers and guards stayed essentially the same. As such the region was seen by independence agitators as ripe for their own movements to grow in. Though such resistance was kept on a tight leash by the Germans it finally burst forth in the northern incursion of 1954. Supported by Nigeria and with the German forces drawn thin by the ongoing Wester Russian War, socialist militants made a lightning strike southward in the hopes of toppling Zentralafrika. For a moment it seemed as if they would do it: the road to Leopoldville was only lightly guarded and the rebel numbers were, in theory, vast. But it was not to be: poor command structures and infighting slowed the rebel advance for long enough that Kommissar Krogmann and Seigfreid Muller were able to reorganize and counterattack with the aid of a new breed of soldier: the Mercenary.
Though having been present in the role of corporate security for years this war was the instance when the Congo Mercenaries truly became a force to be reckoned with. Restrictions on who could hold a gun were dropped and the ranks of mercs swollen with Europeans, Asians and Africans. Though typically small groups and far more independent than Krogmann would have liked, they were all well acquainted with their trade and often brought along their own equipment. They could move fast, hit hard, and there was no reason to suspect their siding with the revolutionaries. With the aid of mercenaries and the cash of selling off vast tracts of land to private holders the revolutionaries were pushed back, and the long guerilla war began. Some areas of Zentralafrika were essentially passive, or had other security solutions. But in the north it was the mercenaries and the garrison which enforced the German order. Names of these men would soon become minor celebrities to the military minded, and their benefactor Seigfreid Muller got a promotion. But for our story only three names matter: the French “mercenary king” Bob Denard, “black Napoleon” Jean-Bédel Bokassa, and “the tiger” Alexandre Banza.
Though it is the armed men who hold real power in their hands, the counter-revolutionary forces are not all German and French soldiers of fortune. The APL’s anti-clerical excesses and radical nativism also alienated the thin class of native collaborators and most of all the catholic church. Barthelemy Boganda was one such native conservative, being a native priest who has tried to act through the church to both reform and aid his flock. After the death of his mentor Marcel Grandin Boganda has become a leading figure of pro-native reform without resorting to violence or leftist radicalism.
With the alliance of French and German landowners paying for their protection the mercenaries, though still technically led by Europeans, became the foremost armed presence in the north. Battling against resistance internal and external by 1962 they have become a hated and envied force, and one which Krogmann is eager to bring into line. But the South Africa War will get in the way of any reforms, with mercenaries once again being called on to shoulder the burden of warfare and internal suppression. By the end of the conflict, no matter how it ends, the mercenaries will have become an even more entrenched force in Zentralafrika. Of course when Huttig takes over this will no longer be tolerated. Having already been humiliated by Muller before, Huttig will take great pleasure in dismissing and rounding up the mercenaries, forcing them to join his forces as regular conscripts without any special privileges. Or rather he would, if he had been fast enough to catch them. When news came of Krogmann’s death and Huttig’s assumption of control the mercenaries did not wait for the order to come: they fled if they were able, and if not they seamlessly transitioned from paid agents of the state to new warlords out for their own survival and enrichment. And more than anyone they congregated around the new king of the mercenaries: Bob Denard.
For the year Huttig’s reign lasts the gangs of former mercenaries will be yet another thorn in his side: raiding, bribing and leading his forces on goose chases. And thanks to Huttig’s destruction of any boats or airplanes he could not gain control over these same former mercenaries had nothing else they could do, unless they cared to gamble trekking all the way to Free France. But Huttig’s flailing attempts to bring them to heel was only one of many threats: in this same area socialist militants and petty warlords also sprung up, and sought to destroy the hated mercenaries themselves. When Huttig dies and the German forces retreat to Leopoldville all pretense will be dropped: the Pan-africans, Fang Gabonese and Cameroonian revolutionaries will all attempt to proclaim new states and to expel the gangsters of German capitalism for good. But with their attention divided and the mercenaries still possessing skill, fire power, and all the money the old landowners could scrap together the attempt will only be half successful. Right between the three of them the new Bêafrîka State will be proclaimed.
Born in 1929 Bob Denard first got the taste for battle during the French State’s failed expeditions against De Gaulle in the late 40s. Deciding that there was better pay and better leadership to be had in Zentralafrika he was one of the first mercenaries brought in through the “King of the Mercs” Siegfried Müller. Though he has little patience for the Reich’s racial code he is a brave commander and an ardent anti-communist. After Müller’s disappearance upon Hüttig’s ascension the stranded mercenaries looked to those bold and skilled enough to lead them, and found it in Denard.
Under the nominal presidency of Boganda, who was practically kidnaped to take the role, the new state is in perhaps the most precarious position of all post-independence states.Their domestic support rests on a incredibly thin strata of white landlords, a handful of native conservatives and a mercenary army which is already looking for a way out the back door. And opposing them is a very dedicated coalition of native nationalists and revolutionaries. It would be the most natural thing in the world for this ramshackle “state” to disintegrate. But there is one thing which can unite them, and can make them all take the risk of fighting it out: Money. Specifically diamonds, gold, and other precious metals which can be sold high on the global market. The mercenaries, native or foreign, have struck for fame in Bêafrîka with the process of becoming more than the lap dogs of the wealthy, but instead to be the wealthy themselves. Baganda hates this of course, but no one asked: the guns call the shots here. And besides, the APL has already branded him a traitor to the people: in the mercenaries' eyes he should be thankful that he still has his head. And so it is decided, the mercenaries would make their own little heaven, and all they had to do to keep it was win the war for it.
Against them stands the APL, their long-time adversary. When the war begins these Pan-africanists, supported by Cameroon and Nigeria, will take the fight to Bêafrîka. This would probably be a death sentence if it were not for the fact the APL is fighting a two front war with the Nationalists to their east. If the mercenary state should still fail it will be dismantled, with the surrounding states taking over its former territory. But if it should win this first war the gamble will have, for now, paid off. Bob, Bokassa and the rest will be able to begin bringing in the money as they use outright criminal methods to both extract and then sell the bounty of the land. The people, of course, hate this as does the nominal “president”. And within the mercenary ranks new fissures will soon begin to show. When faced with a united enemy these men were willing to work together, but now that the threat of death no longer hands quite so close the question of dividing the spoils has quickly turned into a feeding frenzy: it seems to be every mercenary clique for itself trying to carve out its own privileged fiefdom. And it is here that the reformists, such as they are, spy an opportunity.
Alexandre Banza, born 1932 to the Gbaya people, is one of the very few high ranking officers who have a ethnic connection to the land they now rule. His story is much the same as the rest of the black mercenaries: born to a poor family he saw mercenary service as a path to excitement, respect and advancement he would never get on his own. Intelligent, ambitious, and unscrupulous he would rise to become a commander of his own group before the Huttig takeover, and should he take power will rename his state the Bêafrîka Republic, embarking on a cynical campaign of “reform”.
The continued presence of white mercenaries is especially resented by the people, and none more so than commander of the presidential guard and de facto leader of the Bêafrîka State Bob Denard. As such soon after the emergency of war has passed Denard will be dismissed from his position and the two most prominent native warlords Alexandre Banza and Jean-Bédel Bokassa will be invited in to take command. Denard of course has no interest in leaving, and will arrest the president in his own residence, but not before word of the new decree leaked to the streets and the other mercenaries. So it is that the fate of Bêafrîka will be decided the only way a state built on mercenaries could be: with a shootout for control of the president. On one side is Denard: he has already made overtures to Free France and the OFN, as well as criminal contacts in Europe. By leveraging these contacts, and with the aid of the remaining white mercenaries who see his removal as the precursor to their own, he may be able to fight his way out and rise to power over the bodies of his rival warlords.
If Bob Denard and his presidential guard emerges victorious president Boganda’s days will be numbered. Unceremoniously removing and replacing him with a more compliant puppet who I will not even bother you with the name of, any promised elections will be delayed, and then delayed indefinitely. In the end even the facade of democracy will be left behind as the government instead relies on various emergency decrees and under the table deals, as well as outright coercion to cement its power. This is the true mercenary state, in which the armed and powerful take what they want from the weak and destitute: the state will see its revenues come from precious minerals and eventually oil, but just as much from the underground world of smuggling, arms trading, mercenary contracts on behalf of any who will pay, and even (if rumors are to be believed) human trafficking. Denard himself is not so unsophisticated as many of his henchmen: he portrays himself and his state as anti-communist crusaders who are willing to go to the ends of the earth to protect the people from the bolshevik menace. But it makes no difference to the people and to his neighborhood: unless those friendly to him such as the Free French and the Belgian regionalists are victorious both Denard and his state will find themselves facing external invasion sooner or later. When that happens, surrounded by disciplined enemies and facing ever increasing internal revolts, Denard will do what mercenaries do best: he will gather what valuables and guns he can before fleeing. But if this should not happen: if the Congo should remain shattered, and Nigerian ambitions fail, who knows how long the dream may last?
Living as they do in a half criminal status all mercenaries are well acquainted with the underworld. Under Bob however the state itself will come to resemble a crime syndicate, with Bob acting as the Mafia boss. More than any other single resource diamonds are the breadwinner for the “White King of Bêafrîka”, but taking a page out of Manchuria’s playbook drug production and trafficking are increasingly filling the ledger as well. The diplomatic denouncements are nothing: there are always back doors which money can open.
But all this is only if Bob and his people should win the battle for President Boganda. For the first time having the full backing of the streets and with a larger manpower pool to draw from it is likely that the native warlords Alexandre Banza and Jean-Bédel Bokassa will become the victors, chasing out the (competition) colonizers in favor of their own rule. They shall of course be rewarded by the eternally thankful president for their good deeds: Bokassa will take over as the new head of the presidential guard, while Banza will become minister of finance and foreign minister. But just as inevitably there is no throne on earth big enough for two people and so the former allies will soon look for a way to oust the other. The hope of the civilians lay in the victory of the Alexandre Banza clique. If he should succeed in arresting and disappearing his rivals Banza will seek to somewhat moderate the state. Rather than rely on naked coercion he will enforce the most basic of social contracts: in return for the country's obedience he will provide protection. Though the basic facts of the Bêafrîka State shall remain: a thriving underground, an economy based on raw export, and a army of criminals, the worst aspects of this rule will be softened and the “civilianization” of government give cosmetic reform to the regime, and finally permit the nominal president a level of dignity, even being allowed to push some of his catholic inspired social reforms. Though not much more than swapping a military uniform for a business suit this will go some way to providing a sense of normalcy, and allow the state to take a non-aligned stance rather than become the plaything of some foreign power.
On the other hand is the favorite of the soldiers Jean-Bédel Bokassa. You know him as the “mad” emperor of the C.A.R. otl, but there was always a method to his madness: one cannot remain in power for over a decade by being stupid. Where Banza seeks to normalize his regime and to be seen as a developmental junta rather than a warlord, Bokassa will lean into his reputation as a warlord, adding esoteric elements to bolster his rule over strangers. Under Bokassa the new system will be entirely personal: he will take the already weak state apparatus and effectively dismantle it, instead relying on personalized dependents to govern the capital city, and leaving the remainder of the country to its own devices so long as it bent the knee when ordered. No longer able to convincingly portray himself as a benign figure to a people who are mostly foreigners to him, he will instead tap into local superstitions to appear as the master of the occult, ruling as a man to be feared even beyond the grave and allegedly indulging in cannibalism. Perhaps even more importantly however he will make a hard switch from western backing to eastern, seeking the protection and the money of Japan. In this at least he will be fairly competent: negotiating the relationship with Japan through a mixture of bribery, utility, and threatened confiscations to wring out as much foreign aid and diplomatic backing as he can. Beyond this his rule will be one of chaos and decline with the people seeing their standard of living decrease yet further to a near subsistence level. But it will be a chaos which Bokassa alone is the ruler of.
Jean-Bédel Bokassa has been fighting longer than most: volunteering for the Free French during WW2, he was captured and ultimately released during the German conquest of Gabon. From there he drifted as a menial laborer until the northern insurrection forced the Reichskommissar to bend, and Bokassa was called up by an old french commander. From there he rose to be the de-facto head of his own suit by 1962, and now the undisputed leader of his own fiefdom. The extreme personalism and close relation with Japan will eventually result in his coronation as the sovereign of the Central African Empire.
Whether it be cynical pragmatism or esoteric terror the Bêafrîka State will remain a pariah among their fellow african nations. Cameroon and Gabon will consistently attempt to undermine and take over their territory for themselves, while even the Germans will see any government as traitors and rebels. Though its military may find a backer and its people may become cowed, the incredibly fragile state will come to an end sooner than later, unless they get very lucky. Any Nigerian victory will be a disaster, but a successful unifyer to the south and east would be a great threat as well. They were already founded in the war against one of those potential unifiers and all contenders for power recognize that a united Congo is a dangerous Congo. So, either through direct aid in the case of Denard or cheering from the sidelines Bêafrîka must hope for the victory of the regionalists and Jean Schramme.
Katanga, the Regional Alliance, and “The Belgian”.
For the Pan-Africans, the Republicans, the Nationalists and even the Germans survival is not enough: they wish to reunite the old Belgian colony under their vision of the future, and perhaps even seek expansion beyond that. But not all “congolese” feel this way: in particular the province of Katanga sees no reason why it should not be free to plot its own course. Wealthy in its own right with economic ties to the south the elite of the mining provence see no reason why they should be chained to a central government, and are at least partially supported in this by the people. Just what future this “independence” takes is is still up for grabs, but in the chaotic aftermath of Huttings death Moïse Tshombe, Albert Kalonji and Jean Schramme will form a triumvirate to lead the Regional Alliance.
Élisabethville slum. Katanga is the richest province in the Congo, as well as the one with the highest concentration of Belgians, and as such has seen the beginning of a modern city develop in its capital. It has also been the prime region for victims of the Congo Dam to migrate into, on account of its relative stability and high labor demand. This has all combined to put a great deal of pressure on those populating the land south of the lake and the development of modern slums alongside the growing city.
Katanga is, in 1962, the last remnant of Belgian colonial rule left after the German takeover. Not formally of course, that had been swept away along with Belgum itself in the 50s. But just beneath the German surface the old colonial trinity of church, company and stick still held true, and mostly under Belgian control. In the aftermath of WW2 and the establishment of Burgundy many Belgians had chosen to migrate into their old colonial territory, either for political or economic reasons. Their numbers would soon fill out the officer ranks of the Force Publique, the managerial posts of various new mines and plantations, and the pews of the catholic church. But it would not be the end of their difficulties: the old trinity clashed with Krogmann’s designs for the colony and after formally absorbing it in 1955 the contest began. Where the catholic church once held near total control over healthcare and education, not to mention religious life, Krogmann favored secularism for the european and promoted dechristianization for the native. His hopes for dissolving the FP and for removing french and dutch from the lexicon would be similarly resisted. By 1962 this contest of wills has continued to grind on, with the steady advance of germanization being constantly interrupted by economic and political expediency. The Belgian Katangaians find themselves stuck uncomfortably between German pressure from above and Native pressure from below.
This native pressure is on one hand from the educated evoles, always looking to improve the lot of themselves and sometime of their kin. But it also increasingly comes from the restless masses who have come under pressure from the fallout of the Congo Dam. As the Belgian congo moderately prospered the cities began to grow as well, with the colonial authorities making tentative attempts to accommodate the influx. But after the Congo dam and the German takeover both of these trends changed. Millions of refugees fled the great flood into the wealthiest regions they could go: Leopoldville and Katanga. The population of the cities exploded, and the subsistence agriculture still practiced by most Congolese came under incredible pressure as migrants and squatters proliferated. The Belgian authorities meanwhile were left without the resources needed to truly accommodate this change, and were left with only the Force Publique to try and keep the “indigenes” separate from the new “foreigners”. It was in this context that regionalist associations with the goal of protecting specific people, such as the Lula or Lunda, came to dominate the native political scene, such as it was. Both of these movements discovered that they had similar enemies: both resented German power and feared the “national” native resistance. But this did not yet mean they became allies.
Moïse Tshombe, the nominal head of Katanga. Born to a noble lineage and always wealthy, his desire to be liked and his lack of spin have made him into an ideal puppet for other interests. His current sponsor is the remnants of the old Belgian Union Minière, which comprise much of Katanga’s economy. Though not hated by any “his” government is in reality more beholden to his lieutenants such as Godefroid Munongo.
Katanga had lived in an atmosphere of tension even before the rise of Huttig and the advent of the “Afrikareich” did nothing to alleviate this tension. As part of Huttig’s program to fully disarm the natives and bring all armed forces under SS command he attempted to disarm the Force Publique and Belgian mercenaries, rolling them into its own armed forces. Prominent civilian Belgians were arrested and replaced with SS men, leaving both the Belgians and the natives angered. Under this new pressure some decided to give it up: the new regime could not be bargained with as the prior one was, and any resistance clearly meant death. But enterprising elements were not willing to take death laying down: most prominently this included Godefroid Munongo and Jean Schramme. Using their own wealthy connections and estates as payment they would form small resistance groups, and would be the first formal alliance between the Belgians and the regionalists. To cut a long story short when Huttig dies and the Germans retreat to Leopoldville, those SS governors who do not flee will find their lifespans much shorter than expected, and those brave or desperate enough to resist Huttig will return to power. In the face of nationalist calls to reunite the congo however, the regionalists will move first. With the lavish bribery of local mining conglomerates and the justification of “popular will”, the Belgian community led by Schramme and localist leaders will form the first concret result of their ad-hoc alliance: The State of Katanga.
In its first years Katanga is a divided and unsettled place, forced into unity by the common fear of external subjugation but beholden to competing political camps. The state itself is at least nominally led by Moïse Tshombe, descendant of the kings of the Lunda people and scion to one of the last wealthy native families. He is the figurehead of a poorly organized class of native elites and collaborators, most often independently wealthy and committed just as much to their own economic privileges as they are to the cause of regionalism itself. But despite this Tshombe heads the closest thing to a “popular movement” in the new state: the "Confédération des associations tribales du Katanga" (CONAKAT). Formed in the interest of protecting the livelihoods of the Lunda against the encroaching migrants it is through this party that the people are mobilized for war. Relying on traditional authority and elite connections in the name of a tribalism has been effective in at least countering the partisans of the republicans and nationalists which contest the provence. Just as in the other contenders the war is as much a mater of internal division as it is defeating external challenges. But in order to meet those external enemies the party has been obliged to do so with the aid of their “ally”, the Belgians.
Jean Schramme, despite his official profession, is less of a mercenary and more of a Belgian “contractor” who has a reputation for getting things done and resisting German encroachment. Coming to Africa soon after the end of WW2 he is part of a new breed of Belgians who consider Zentralafrika, or more accurately Katanga, as their true home and embrace the ideal of a paternal ruler of their “primitive” neighbors. Being a successful entrepreneur as well as part time leader of the “Leopard Battalion” Jean has become a prominent part of the Belgian expat community. But though he no longer wishes to return to Europe do not think he has forgotten what the Nazi’s did: the old motherland is dead by German hands, and he has not forgiven them.
Just as on the native side the Belgians are divided internally: German policy was frustrating and insulting, but it was also relatively stable and offered a protection against the natives surrounding them. To forgo this protection and risk battle with the world's superpowers in the name of an uncertain independence requires a boldness uncommon in men. But since when did the meek make history? Returning from his armed exile Schremme will find the FP and Belgian police in disarray, and take it upon himself to topple the last of the SS governors. In his mind there is no question: in order for the Belgians to be free and prosperous they must take the risk of rebellion against Germany and carve out their own state in the chaos. But despite his personal exploits he is unable to do this on his own, and so despite his personal distaste for allying with the native regionalists his own backers in the belgian mining and administrative class have forced him to make common cause with “their” evolese. Regardless Schremme has become the critical belgian commander in this rebelion, bringing the remainder of the belgian community with him whether they like it or not. He leads in a mercenary style, never far from the front lines and with a greater emphasis on personal bravery than more mundane things like logistics.
Though Katanga is the heart of the Regionalist Alliance it is still only one part of that alliance: to the eastern flank is Sud-Kasaï, led by Albert Kalonji as the vanguard state of the Luba secessionist movement. Both Kalonji and Tshombe claim to be protecting their people (Luba and Lunda respectively) from becoming minorities within their own land and from becoming the playthings of another foreign power, whether that be Germania, Washington or any other place. They are also both from prominent and wealthy local families, who have cooperated with the belgian colonizers for generations and have every personal incentive to resist foreign acquisition. As such their support is not primarily from the people, but from the oligarchs and the army. These are two significant advantages however: While other factions are scrambling to put together a military, a state, and to pay for it all, Katanga and her allies are able to fall back on the old colonial power structures, expanding the FP and leveraging oligarchical ties to slap together an army faster than their rivals. With the mix of audacious leadership, money and the Schramme loyalist mercenaries/formed FP officers the alliance may be able to snatch its independence despite the lack of international backing.
Map of regionalist victory, Azandeland acts as a placeholder for local authority (or lack thereof), Sud-Kasai is the Luba Empire. The immediate issue facing the regionalists will be export access: the states survival depends on the revenue from its extensive mining operations, and if that material cannot be exported it is worthless. For this Katanga must either negotiate a trade deal with the German remnants, or seek a detente with the self proclaimed frontline of liberation Zambia. Neither is eager to do this, but the world calls for what Katanga can provide, most of all Uranium. Eventually the market will win out, and one side will decide it is better to compromise principle than give the other an opportunity to gain access to the Katanga bounty.
IF VICTORIOUS the Regionalist Alliance will comprise an expanded State of Katanga, the Luba Empire, and a number of minor eastern powers propped up by Katanga. For the Luba and the Eastern chiefs the question of post war politics is an easy one: tribal traditionalism shall prevail as Albert Kalonji names himself king and the local chiefs are either bribed or threatened into compliance with the new order. While some may make efforts to modernize and advance their domains it will only be done under the watchful and occasionally helpful eye of Katanga. The only question remaining is who will be in control of Katanga itself. Jean Schramme is not a reasonable man, or at least not a moderate one: if he feels that he and the Belgians are not granted their proper place he may well try to overthrow Moïse Tshombe and install himself as the leader of the new state. The natives are less than satisfied as well: though free of foreign control it is clear to them that the old order is no longer acceptable: the people who fought and won the war for independence demand that their sacrifice be rewarded in some meaningful way. And most of all the question of race can no longer be papered over: The Belgians and Europeans remain on top, the migrants have been savaged, and the land and jobs available are not enough to satisfy them all.
To reconcile these internal difficulties a conference shall be held between the Belgian leadership of the army and company's one on hand, and the native oligarchs and officers on the other to see if a viable solution can be worked out. On the Belgian side the question is that of security and property: they wish to maintain the full roster of legal rights granted to them by belgian law, to keep their property and company concessions, and for a Belgian “veto” in the national government to ensure that Belgian rights are not trampled by some future populist government. On the CONAKAT side is a desire to renegotiate the terms of the “social contract”: to ensure a majority native voice in government which cannot be overruled by Belgian privilege, greater native ownership of property and the full abolition of any legal barriers to their advancement. However both sides are united in seeking stability and in their distrust of the congolese “masses”. Those masses are not without a voice themselves: through labor unions, dissident political parties and new officer associations the experience of warfare has made the people politically aware. If the result of the conference does not give some bones to the people it may find that its support is far too narrow to be stable.
Union Minière, once the undisputed master of the Katanga economy, has declined somewhat under German overlordship. With a majority of its shares owned by the Belgian state and its former leadership fleeing to America after the end of the war its foundations were shaky. When Krogmann began the great sell off and rescinded the Belgian Congo’s autonomy the company found itself in yet more hot water. Transitioning to a locally owned company within Zentralafrika itself the Union has been forced to cut back on its paternalistic spending to make ends meet. Beyond the typical demands for labor rights and wage increases the Kantaga people also wish for a return to the housing, education and social protection once afforded by the leviathan. With its place in Katanga once again secure this may just be possible.
A successful conference will be one of compromise. For the people a number of social protections and laws will be promised: greater state funding to education, hospitals, and housing will be promised, along with a hike in wages. In order to afford this the belgians will need to accept their privileged economic position comes with a responsibility to fund the state which protects it: though direct taxes may be a bridge too far a system of expected “gifts” and an expansion of the old paternalism into state guided policy may work out. In return for their material contributions the Belgians will receive legal autonomy, organizing their own political parties and keeping their land. The native oligarchs meanwhile would take the national stage, being granted privileged places within the Katanga economy as well as using CONAKAT as their vehicle for political dominance. Concessions and compromises such as these require that all parties trust the other to keep up their end of the bargain, and not simply alter the deal when they feel they are able. And in the aftermath of a brutal civil war and a political culture of corruption such trust is very hard to come by. But if these difficulties are overcome, and Jean Schramme is kept mollified, the new State of Katanga will be ruled as a collaborative oligarchy, keeping real representation out of the hands of the people and wealth in the hands of a few, but also a relatively stable and moderate government which is willing to compromise when need be. Unless it is a question of distrusted ethnic groups attempting to secede from the state or restart Congolese unification, in which case the Katanga Gendarmerie will be the only answer given.
But what if this conference does not succeed? What if the protests outside become too large, or the sides are too inflexible, or if Jean Schramme believes the rights of Belgians are being sold too cheaply? Then the Rule of Fire will come back and those with the force to crush their opposition will prevail. And in Katanga that can only mean one thing: Schramme and his allies will stage a coup, placing themselves in charge once again as an emergency government. Those unwilling to ally with him will be dismissed, replaced with those who are. The new mission of the state is the protection of “Belgian civilization” in Katanga, with Schramme attempting to revive the old trinity of Church, State and Company under his guiding hand. He never truly wanted to be in this position: he would much rather simply go back to his plantation and be master of his own little world. But he belives that his new homeland calls out for leadership and guts it seems only he can provide, and so he will seek to lead it into the future he envisions. One where the Congo natives are grateful and subservient to their betters, where all the structures of the trinity are led by Europeans to the benefit of all. Of course most of the natives have very different ideas about what the future should look like, and so Schremma’s Katanga will immediately be thrown into a bush war as the old civil war factions reform as guerrilla movements seeking to topple his dictatorship. The profits of Katanga are vast, especially if one is willing to sell uranium to anyone willing to buy, but how long will money and determination be able to hold against the will of the people?
At a stretch the white population of Katanga is 100,000, while the total african population is somewhere north of 1.5 million. This is before one considers the increasing populations of the Luba Empire and the eternal frontier of the Eastern Congo. And then there is the highly likely presence of hostile regimes on the borders: all the money in the world cannot win Schramme this Bush War, and he will either need to swallow his pride and accept democratization for the natives or accept the return of the Reich as suzerain. And even that may not be enough to avoid the rage of a people betrayed.

Memory transcription subject: Jaxton, son of a humble sheep farmer
Date [standardized human time]: October 11th, 2136
If someone asked me years ago how many people would travel the globe just to see me. My answer would have been three; my father, my mother, and Dex Mason. My mother and father would have been simply obligated to do so, as I was their son, and I would have done the same thing. Dex was my best friend when I went to middle school in America, and he stayed my best friend when I went back to Wales, going back to Atlanta for many vacations.
What can I say? He had a nice collection of guns, and his general cheerful attitude made many people optimistic, so a day on the range with him led to the both of us being happier.
Then you add in Dex’s older and younger brothers, our mutual friend John Dillinger, and then you have a recipe for a fun time; guns, video games, hiking, and the occasional sheep herding if they ever come to my home: It’s a blast!
An alien porcupine though… I honestly never expected that I would ever in my honest-to-God lifetime, have such an impact on someone before. We barely knew each other for even a few minutes, yet she to my knowledge was merely some sad Gojid that was struggling with depression and loss. All I did was walk in and comfort her, or well, that’s how I saw it.
I still feel like an absolute idiot for forgetting about what I told her. It wasn’t a promise, but based on the implication of how I said it. It may as well have been a declaration to see the girl a few hours later, or however long it took her to get ready.
Now, speaking of Barlim, it’s been a few minutes since she arrived at my doorway at the most unexpected of times. I had her sitting in our living room on our couch. The Gojid, or Gojya, that I had to have explained to me, had her arms wrapped around one of our decorative pillows. She was giving squeezes every few seconds depending on how she felt, and if she was really giving it a firm squeeze, I’d reach over and stroke the top of her head. Barlim seemed to relax every time I did this.
“You holding up better?” Barlim appeared to be holding up better: No longer sobbing out tears from her eyes, or having mucus running from her nostrils.
She merely sniffed weakly for a second, nuzzling into my hand. If I had to admit, I had no idea if I was performing some massive social taboo by patting her like an animal, but if she wasn’t going to complain, neither was I. I mean, I already poked myself twice more! “I’m feeling much better. Sorry for intruding…”
“Don’t be,” I said while holding back a small laugh. “Are you feeling better enough to talk now?” Barlim’s ears flicked in response, and then she nodded in response upon realizing I didn’t know what those ear flicks meant. “Good.”
“Hey, I would just like to apologize for how I acted,” my mother started before I had the chance to speak. “It’s just that I’ve seen on the news and read of murderous xenophobic aliens…-”
“It’s fine,” Barlim let out the most adorable-sounding chittering noise I have ever heard. It sounded as if a porcupine was, well, laughing! “I would not have reacted much differently… Three days ago?” At least she could make fun of herself for how she acted. Her ears gave a few flicks, gesturing towards amusement or self-depreciation if I had to guess. They burned bright blue.
My father took a minute to stand up and walk over to Barlim. She only fidgeted a little bit, but not much when he reached out to her with one hand. “Jameson, again, it’s been pleasant to meet you so far.” The man’s hand hung in the air for several seconds. Barlim eyeing it up with what had to be a quizzical expression. “You’re supposed to grab it and firmly shake it,” my father eventually grunted.
“Oh!” That seemed to snap Barlim out of her stupor. She reached forward in kind with one paw, clasping her surprisingly big paw around my father’s hand, which he shook. The Gojid seemed to have a fair understanding of the action after a few seconds, at which point the handshake ended and my father returned to his seat.
A brief, quiet pause occupied the four of us before there was more knocking at the front door. “Oh, uh, that may be the rest of my friends. I sort of forgot about them when I realized we were so close.” The tips of Barlim’s ears turned a delicate shade of blue. She started to get up, but with a firm palm on the top of her head, I held her down, gently.
“You traveled a long way. Let me get the door,” I state and get up from the couch. My knees and back stretch, giving a satisfactory series of pops before I work my way to the front door. I decide against grabbing the mask, assuming that Barlim’s friends have gotten quite used to the infamous human binocular stare. When I open it, I see a rather eclectic group of individuals, some familiar and some not.
“Arwen, Trivi, Tova, and I take it Barlim’s friends.” Arwen and Trivi issue some friendly waves. Tova has her forearms clasped around Arwen’s neck from behind, jaw resting on the redhead’s shoulders. Her eyes are puffy and orange. It was pretty easy to assume what she had been going through. Meanwhile, the other three flick their ears and tails in a way that was most likely a greeting, but that was just me making an inference based on this being our first interaction, and them not giving waves in greeting.
I really need to learn Gojid and Venlil body language.
“Just delivering the rest of that one Gojid’s friends.” Arwen’s tone was the general cheerful tone it always was. She briefly stepped back from the door and swung an arm to the side, pointing to the three aliens behind her, doing so while under the weight of Tova.
“Barlim,” one of the Gojid said to Arwen. “My name is Pragh,” she then pointed over to another Gojid, “That’s Tack, and,” she indicated to the final Gojid, “That is Telg.” Again, the other two Gojid gave very similar flicks of the ears when they glanced at me with one of their eyes. “I take it you’re Jaxton?”
I couldn’t resist the urge to curl my lips upwards in a smile. The three Gojid didn’t flinch when I exposed my teeth, for which I was grateful. I really didn’t feel like bowing to more people than I needed to at the moment, having not gotten a particularly great amount of sleep last night was not a wise idea. “You’d be correct. It seems I’m the popular man of the hour. What can I do for you all?”
“Well, Tack and I were simply following Barlim, so we were going to stay with her until the UN or whoever really controls the whole Gojid refugee camp situation comes looking for us-”
I cut off Pragh with an amused tone. “So let me get this straight. You wanna come and mooch off my family for a bit because you have nowhere to stay at the moment?” I hold my tongue for just the slightest second, letting Gojid raise up her paws defensively. Even Arwen’s eyes widen briefly at what I just said.
“That’s not-” Pragh doesn’t speak for long before I dismissively wave my hand.
“I’m joking, yes, I’m sure my parents will allow you to stay for a bit, but you’ll have to clean up after yourselves, and all that stuff.” I lean up against the doorframe. “Ok though, jokes aside, what do you all want?”
Pragh rubbed her paws over her blue ears. “Yes, well, you did sort of hit one of them. I will admit, there was very little planning other than we’re going to Wales on our part. You don’t have to worry about Telg though.”
“I scored myself a date! Hah!~ So, I will be going back to Georgia in about an hour or two.” The Gojid paused, popped open one of the pockets on his hoodie, and took a peek inside at a slip of paper he pulled out. “Two hours, yeah, I have about an hour to spend here. So you and Tack are going to stay here?”
Pragh nodded to Telg’s words. “Yep, someone has to make sure Barlim continues to be a responsible Gojid. Also, I still have more research to do over the internet-”
“Ah yes, research, Pragh, research, am I right?~
“No! Not that! I’m not going to be looking up that!
The two male Gojid couldn’t help but hold back giggles and chitters, making me feel as if I was missing some sort of- Oh. The second it clicked for me, I just let out a long, slow sigh. “Please, let me just say that humanity is probably not whatever you found. Factory farms are a thing of the past.” Apparently, I was wrong, for the other two Gojid started laughing more uproariously, “Ok, I’m wrong it seems…” The gears proceeds to click a second time after realizing it was something a lot more bawdy than damning. I opened my mouth to say something but quickly realized that I wouldn’t have anything to follow up on if one of them decided to make any sort of accusation, so I quickly shut my plan to speak about that down. “How about you all just come inside now? Your friend Barlim already came by, and I’m pretty sure you all would like a break from your adventure.”
“Actually, Trvi and I were going to take Tova to my home. Might take her to the hospital if Quilix has calmed down. God, I wished they transported him to Ysbyty Gwynedd, but no. He had a freakout and had to be moved to London.”
“It’s all my fault…” The dark venlil whined.
Arwen’s hand managed to work its way between Tova’s ears, giving a few scritches. Scritches that Tova nuzzled into. “Come on you big, big venlil. I know you’re upset. Just, hang in there for a little while longer. I’m sure Quilix will come around. Let’s take you home, see ya Jaxton!” Arwen waved and carried the venlil toward the parked taxi in front of my house. Well, carried was a generous term for half-carry/half-assisted in guiding toward the car.
Trivi followed seconds later, giving his own bye and wave. “Tell your mother and father I said hi, see you tomorrow!” And with that, the blonde venlil scampered off, following after his human lover.
This left me with the three other hedgehog-looking aliens standing awkwardly in front of my door. They looked amongst themselves, thinking about saying something.
Wait, someone’s missing…
“Arf! Arf!”
The three Gojid who looked like they were about to say something all jumped about a foot in the air when Lacey came bounding through them, running straight past me into my home. “Oh, Lacey! Welcome ho- Oh, and ignored.” I shake my head upon hearing the following oof that comes from my father. Lacey must’ve claimed my father’s lap as her seat. “Well, if you want to come inside and meet the rest of my family. Come right on in.”
The next few minutes are filled with more pleasantries being exchanged. The Gojid all take their place on the couch, somehow managing to fit four of them on a couch meant for three. I end up choosing to stand by my father, who gently strokes Lacey across her back. The border collie panting jovially, looking back and forth between us and our alien guest, giving the occasional bark to beg for more attention.
The Gojid guests seem calm for the most part, sitting on that couch, but it is quite clear that the dog makes them uncomfortable since they flinch every time Lacey either makes a noise or stares at them with those heterochromatic eyes. “Not a fan of dogs, are you?” My father breaks the silence once it starts up again.
“I didn’t like…” Pragh started but stopped seconds later. “Listen, I believe you know why most Federation species don’t like humans, right?” Pragh’s words earned an affirmative grunt from my father. My mother and I nodded too. “Well, you’re all sapient and in control of your hunting instincts…” I raised my eyebrow at that but chose to say nothing. “That dog though-”
My father raised a hand, telling Praph to stop speaking for a moment. “I am going to have to stop you right there. Firstly, humans don’t, or we believe don’t have hunting instincts, and secondly, Lacey is a good girl that has harmed no person before, human or alien. I can assure you, as well as Quilix, Trivi, and Tova, that Lacey wouldn’t harm any of you, your pups, or anything else you will be worried about.”
Those few calmly spoken, but sternly voiced words are enough to calm the four Gojid down a fair amount. While I can’t see their muscles under their fur all that well, I can safely assume that their muscles grew lax at such information. Maybe we can do more to ease them around the dog while they’re here?
With an idea springing to mind, I take a few steps over to our old wooden hall tree. It is adorned with a few coats and hats, but what I am interested in is blue colored, six feet long rope of dog leash. The second it makes the lightest noise, Lacey is bolting toward me. “Eistedd!” The dog swiftly responds to the command: Hind quarters hitting the ground the second the word leaves my lips. I reach down and stroke the top of the dog’s head with one hand, getting a jovial arf out of her. “Merch dda, merch dda.~” I give the dog’s head a little bit more tender love with my palm and fingers before attaching the leash.
“Cefn.” I keep my voice low, coaxing Lacey into walking toward the couch.
The four Gojid, three of which have probably spent some time outside with the dog, all had a similar reaction when the dog came over: Paws came up off the ground, retracting safely onto the cushions above. It wasn’t really out of the border collie’s reach, but it was clearly instinctual-driven or propaganda-driven fear. “No need to be afraid, she won’t bite you - eistedd.” True to my words, Lacey gets close, sniffing along the edge of the sofa, but not jumping up onto the furniture.
“I see you’ve been practicing, Jaxton. You showing off for the guest?” My dad jokes.
“Hey, I don’t really get a good chance to speak Welsh. Dam- Darn it, really should’ve paid more attention in school. Might go get some lessons so I’m not part of the ten percent that can’t speak it. All I can do is shepherd a dog around, ask for the bathroom, a beer, where am I, and a few other things.” It’s hard not to let out a disappointed sigh. “I need to get off my backside and stop being so lazy.” I pause for one small moment. “And that probably translated for all of them to their native tongue. Doesn’t matter if I say it in English, Welsh, or honestly, Mandarin.”
My old man grins and laughs, leaning his back into the old rocking chair he claimed. My attention returns back to the dog, the fearful porcupine, and three scared hedgehogs.
The first one to reach out if I recall his name is Tack. The Gojid’s claws lightly brush the top of Lacey’s head in a tepid fashion. The dog stares back up at the curious paw; not growling, barking, yipping, biting, or making any sort of fuss that could freak out the apprehensive Gojid. Slowly, Lacey’s tail beings to wag as the curious touching continues for a few seconds. “Is that normal?”
“Mhm… Yes, dogs’ tails wag when they are happy. If she was really happy, she’d jump on you and start licking your face.”
The four Gojid recoiled with what looked like disgust: The thought of a predator’s maw all over their face, tasting them as if they were her next meal was probably what was coursing through their minds. “I think… That’s something I wouldn’t like from a non-sapient creature.” Telg adds in.
He says he doesn’t want it from a non-sapient, but what about a sapient? Oh, what wonderful thoughts this one has. I internally joked.
Both my father and mother let out an audible cough at Telg’s… Well, it could’ve been an indecent statement, or maybe licking was a sign of greeting? There was no way for me to know with my lack of knowledge of Gojid customs.
God damn; Gojid customs, language, body language, and Welsh! That was leaving out Venlil ear and tail signals as well! Too much to learn.
With a gentle nudge, I guide Lacey down the bottom of the couch, letting each Gojid get about a minute or two of bonding time with the goodest of girls. It’s only been a few minutes, but the four could be easily seen relaxing: Tack and Telg are both confident enough to let their paws touch the floor again.
From fearful of anything that ate meat their entire life to sort of fearfully allowing a dog to sniff them, or them to touch a dog, must be leaps and bounds beyond possibility months ago.
“So, you all more comfortable around dogs?”
I get a non-varied amount of reactions: All of them positive to a minor degree, but none are negative or super positive. “Good.”
With such a positive, or well, lacking in a negative reaction from our alien guests. I reach down and unhook the canine’s restraint. No one flinches and Lacey continues to sit for about another few seconds before lazily pacing around the front of the couch, sniffing at paws for some more time before retreating back beside my father’s feet.
“So… What’s the history between humans and dogs?” Pragh was the one that shot this question. One is no doubt born from the fact that we probably allowed a non-sapient predator into our home.
Well, if I was using their logic, of course: I wouldn’t be surprised if it came from ‘Wouldn’t predators eliminate the competition?’ if I had to guess.
“The history involving our canine companions is long and complex.” I reach behind my head to adust my blonde ponytail, tightening up the black band to keep my hair from falling in front of my face. “Most domesticated dogs you’ll see; German shepherds, border collies, Australian shepherds, golden retrievers, and on and on the list goes. I believe there are hundreds of breeds, but that is another tangent we can go on another date. What you’re more interested in is the history, as you have asked.”
I took a few steps around toward the front of the couch, using this new position to project my voice onto my alien audience. My parents had already heard this story a few times when they spoke with one of our dog breeders.
“It all started roughly speaking, thirty-thousand years ago.” I paused, totally for dramatic effect, but to also allow the Gojid to digest this fair-sized crumb of information. “Our competitor, an antagonizing species of persistent pack predators with a strong social bond, the wolf, would often invade human territories, and vice versa. You see, humans and wolves aren’t too dissimilar. We’re both highly social species, pursuit pack predators as I have heard, emotionally intelligent, highly adaptive, strong parental connections, and good communication skills. I can go into specific details another time, but those are some of the big traits we share. I’d say that the large preference for having a social structure coupled with good communication skills on both sides were the two assets that helped the most. Emotional intelligence and actual intelligence would probably be third and fourth. Dogs and wolves can be pretty smart.”
I take a moment again, allowing my audience to follow along with what I am saying, waiting to see if any of them have a question. “So due to these similarities, humans and these wolves cross species’ barriers?” The bipedal porcupine opined.
I nod to Barlim’s question. “Very close, but not quite.” I take a moment to swing a pointing finger down to Lacey. “I mean, as much as I love Lacey. I don’t see a dog diplomat coming through any time soon to argue for their sapience let alone an alliance.” I then straighten my posture back up, holding back a small laugh by letting a grin stretch across my lips. “It was more along the lines of wolves were desperate for food, and they’d feed off the scraps we humans left behind. This would go on for some time with the braver or more docile canines being allowed to slowly integrate with human society.”
“But they’re eating your scraps and food, but what do they do for you? Other than herd sheep? It just seems like your competition is swooping your food from under your nose, but… You’re not complaining at all.” Pragh was the one to ask that question.
Called it!
“These proto-dogs had many purposes! Just look at Lacey and you can probably see what she has that is superior to a human. Tell me what traits you can see.”
I give the four Gojid some time to look over the dog. They eventually look like they all have something to say, so I slide down the line of them; Pragh, Telg, Tack, and then finally Barlim.
“A better sense of smell to hunt for prey you can’t see?” Pragh opined.“Better hearing for locating threats?” Telg questioned.
“Sharp teeth and claws for fighting off other humans.” Tack would state rather confidently.
“To form an emotional connection with and to not feel lonely?” Barlim tilted her head to the side, giving the dog another look.
I let them stew over their answers for about thirty seconds to discuss amongst themselves. Needless to say, I was kind of shocked, but also not by Barlim’s answer. Maybe my time spent with her gave me some subconscious understanding of her mentality? The other Gojid all looked at her, so I assume her different answer probably made something click amongst all of them.
“Well, to answer your questions; yes, yes, yes, and yes. You’re all correct. Some may say that the first three are probably the priority.” This statement earns a chitter from the four Gojid occupying the couch. “But I like to have hope for that last one: When you’re by yourself. The world is a scary place after all. It’s best not to be alone. I believe you all have herds? Well, we humans have families, tribes, or nations, depending on how deep you wish to look into it, and yes, dogs can be a part of a human family. Family cares not from where the blood comes.”
“Quick question and not to side-track the conversation too far, but I was told by my date that humans dislike being called predators. Is that true here too, or was that a dialect or cultural thing?” Telg was the one throwing this question.
“It is that way here too. When humans refer to other humans as predators, it is because that other human is a gross pervert that does horrific, deviant, and sexual things toward other people, animals, or in this case now that aliens exist, aliens, so I would refrain from calling humans predators unless you personally know the individual and they are ok with it. That being said, humans define predator as more of a relationship adjective when between animals. A deer is a predator to plants as a wolf is a predator to a deer. It is the relationship of consumption rather than dietary traits.” I finish off my statement with a nod.
“Well… If you don’t mind me referring you to as a predator for one statement…” Telg droned on.
I take a brief glance over toward my parents. My dad gives me a nonchalant shrug. My gaze returns back to Telg. “Go ahead and shoot your question or statement at me.”
The four Gojid look stunned for a moment, off-put by something I said-
Oh, don’t tell me ‘shoot’ was predatory… Probably was.
“Just… throw out your question.”
“It was more of a statement, actually, but anyways. Family cares not from where the blood comes, has to be one of the most herd-like statement I have heard from a predator.”
Did he really just say that?
He really did, but I can’t fault him. From his point of view, he’s been spun so many times that up is down, and left is right.
I shake my head, lowering it. A small chuckle slipping from between my lips. I could even hear my mother and father laughing behind me a few seconds later.
“Was what I said really that funny?”
“No, just the logic behind it is kinda funny. Like I said, humans don’t normally refer to ourselves as predators, and this whole alien thing is kind of new to me.” My words carried upon by a light tone earns some laughs as well from our Gojid guests.
I clap my hands together, signaling the end of our little tangent. “Now, if I may resume my, if I do say so myself, informative explanation… The proto-dogs seamlessly integrated into our small tribes at the time; they could track threats and prey miles before we were even aware of them, they could hear the smallest sounds and alert us of their dangers. Moreover, their sharp teeth and claws served as deterrents against other threats such as large carnivores, food-stealing rodents, or hostile human forces. Additionally, their companionship provided solace to lonely humans. As you can see,” I pointed back to Lacey, who was having her back rubbed by my father’s sock-covered foot, “Lacey seems to be enjoying herself quite nicely, but so is my father. In short, interacting with dogs triggers the release of feel-good chemicals in both human and canine brains. Activities such as petting, snuggling, and playing contribute to this positive bond."
Again, I pause, giving everyone some time to follow along. “Thus, they’d impact our evolution and vice versa: Humans that had dogs in their tribes were more successful than tribes without dogs. Humans that bonded more effectively with their canine companions would get even farther. As millennia went by, humans would get better at reading dog expressions, and dogs would get better at reading human expressions.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. I typed into it for a bit until an old photo of a wolf showed up. I turned my phone’s screen toward the four Gojid. “Here you can see a wolf. They aren’t extinct due to some wildlife restoration efforts, but we had a few close calls. Wolves are extinct in the UK and Ireland as of now, but not in North America, Europe, or Asia. What you see before you are what thirty-thousand years of evolution has done to us.”
Based on the look that the Gojid were giving me. I would guess it was along the lines of wow.
“Now, before you start asking more questions. I should let you know that humanity has not only domesticated one carnivorous species, but a few others as well; some birds of prey like falcons, felines, and mustelidae such as ferrets. Meanwhile, on the herbivorous side, we have horses, elephants, rabbits, and so on. Yeah, it’s quite a long list. Means more animals for us to pet and touch. Humans can bond with just about anything, even non-living things, but that’s a story for another time.”.
I perform a small stretch, feeling my back pop. A small break in the monotony of speaking for so long.
“Now, to go back to the human-dog bond. I should remind myself to tell you the story of Gelert. It’s quite a sad story, but bear with me for just a moment.”
I clear my throat, getting ready to speak out an old Welsh folklore myth.
“A long time ago, a prince of North Wales by the name of Llywelyn went out hunting without his trusty dog, Gelert. He’d return home later that day to see Gelert, covered in blood, jovially returning to him. This freaked out the prince, who rushed to his son’s crib, finding it knocked over and messy with blood. He feared that the dog had killed his son and immediately plunged his sword into the dog’s side.” The four Gojid wince at the description, having just been told of the forged bond I have described moments ago. “The dog’s pained cry heralds the cry of the prince’s infant son, who lay on the other side, protected from a slain wolf. Gelert had valiant fought to protect Llywelyn’s son from the wolf, and in so was rewarded with a blade through its heart! A tragic tale to discourage impulsive thoughts and rash rushes to judgment. It was said that the prince buried Gelert and never smiled again.”
I never considered myself a great storyteller, but somehow I managed to get the four Gojid all teary-eyed. Barlim was rubbing at her eyes once again, and so was Tack too.
“H-how could he have done that to the dog..?” Barlim’s meek voice trailed off.
“Well, as said, Llywelyn thought Gelert killed his son. It was a rash decision. This moral folklore is supposed to warn against such tragedies, speaking of which, isn’t there an extermination fleet heading this way?”
While I may have been speaking for so long, having taken all our attention away from the potential destruction of Earth, or the general mopey attitude that came from meeting Tova. It probably was wise to bring up the fact that armageddon was on its way to Earth.
The four Gojid just sort of looked down sheepishly at the ground or flicked their ears in a way that probably meant the same thing. I didn’t really mean to put them on the spot like that, considering it was some of their former allies committing this attack, but I guess that’s just how the cookie crumbles sometimes.
“I think I can speak for all of us here that we don’t-” Telg was interrupted by my father.
“We don’t blame you, or at least I can attest to myself, my son, and my wife over here. One day, assuming we survive this looming catastrophe. There will be regret, followed by hope, and then love and compassion once again. Though, I don’t think that’s what my son was hinting toward, more over the fact that your allies are about to make a rash decision they don’t understand. Probably one you would have made years ago, but that doesn’t really matter here, or there. We live in the now, and I think it’s time we started stocking up on some goods for our cellar. Well, we got goods actually, and a couple of guns too, but nothing fancy like the Americans and all their machine guns. A .30-30 lever action, an old .44 revolver, a twelve gauge shotgun, and a .22 hunting rifle. Nothing fancy,” he shrugs and grunts. “I’m more worried about my sheep. The best we can do is pray they don’t shoot the barn.”
There’s a brief silence as the seven of us come down from the long monologue that was dispersed between moments of questionnaires. I rub one of my eyes, stretching my jaw open wide in a hand-covered yawn.
How long have by been talking?
“Sprak! I gotta go or I am going to miss my flight!” Telg clamors, quickly hopping off the couch. He quickly taps at his phone with his claws, making his way toward the front door. “See you guys later, and thanks for letting us stay! Yes, I know how to call a taxi!” He opens the door and bolts outside. At least had the manners to close it back without slamming it.
This left us with three Gojid!
“Well,” my mother stood up from her chair. “I’m certain you’re all hungry after such a long adventure, and Telg is probably too, but he’s gone already. Let me see if I can make you all something to eat…” She hesitates for a second before continuing. “Nothing with meat or animal products in it. Just vegetables and fruit,” she iterates before walking off to the kitchen, leaving my father and I with the three Gojid.
You know, that leaves one important question that’s been on my mind. One that I had asked Barlim, but have been quickly distracted by her onslaught of sudden tears due to my forgetful nature. “A quick question if I may have your attention.”
The three Gojid turned their attention toward me, looking at me as they awaited my question
“How the hell did you all get here?”

2023.06.06 13:21 NotKirby96XX I FUCKING HATE HOW WEBSITES ARE BECOMING "OVERSOCIALIZED"

I don't know about you guys, but I barely use Reddit these days because well, damn, well, I've lost tangible, veritable interest in pretty much everything and I am increasingly at odds with the collective opinions of people here
It's (to you guys at least,) little things like more profile pictures being shoehorned here and there on websites that aren't social media sites to begin with, "latest post," tickers on the sidebars of forums, previews of comments on websites like Youtube, you know
Speaking of Youtube, the UI changes that have occured on that particular website, (I'm going to name them right here: the inclusion of a comments preview, this "member recognition shelf," and have made me deathly afraid, of visiting the website for fear of encountering a certain group of people that have made my life hell, that these stupid UI changes are basically forcing me to see (these infuriating changes on not just Youtube, but on other places to, can be reversed through Ublock Origin on desktop, on Chrome and Firefox, but I prefer to browse the internet on my IPhone, where unfortunately, black magic screwery of that kind is not possible due to Apple's strict App Store regulations
Hell, I even tried contacting the smug, pretentious people at Youtube addressing my colossal disdain for the changes they've made via this "send feedback" feature and politely asking them to implement a feature(s) that would allow one to disable these changes. I even used arguments such as informing them that I'm neurodivergent and that it would be congruent with their ethics of universal acceptance, and said that they're sitting on literal mountains of cash and it wouldn't hurt for them to do so, but, I know all too well at the end of the day, it's their board of directors' mostly net revenue-influenced decisions that make the difference, not some small, insignificant quark like me, Most, if not, all of these Silicon Valley tech giants have non-existent peer-to-peer customer support; they don't give a flying damn about the individual
I'd like it if someone created a mirror website of YouTube that mimics all of it's features that mimics all of it's non-embedded player features including recommended videos, sans all of those infuriating changes I have mentioned,
I feel like all of those changes, those, it's a subliminal attempt to make me yield to conformity, become one part of one amorphous, same-feeling, same-thinking hivemind that unanimously agrees on everything
I don't know about you guys but I am cursed with Aspergers syndrome and suffer from some untreated moderate to severe mental illnesses, and I have this crippling obsession with avoiding a certain group of people on the internet, at all costs that I will not name for personal reasons, that I'd rather die than be forced to share a room with,
and I feel that with all the increasing overall "oversocialization" of the web, some higher unknown cosmic force, whether it be some malevolent AI, some god (most of you folks are devout atheists, but candidly I myself am agnostic, half of the time,) is forcibly trying to shove these people down my throat and make my life a living hell, I feel like I'm being forced into a corner, a rock and a hard place if you will,
I know human beings are social animals but I honestly think being "oversocialized" is a bad thing because it can for one, extinguish one's ego and self-image completely, diminish one's relationship with themselves and the natural world, and above all, lose one's sense of self to say that it bugs me would be a colossal understatement, you
I apologize for going on several tangents (I have ADHD) but I rest my case

2023.06.06 12:32 boutell New US CCS chargers report for May 2023

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
  1. Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
  2. Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.
If you'd like to know about new chargers along your routes right away, or just prefer not to check this list monthly when new openings are rare in your area, I've set up a free service that provides email notifications as soon as they open. You can sign up at evpov.com. Or not! I don't really have a business plan here, I built it to help EV owners like myself.
To streamline this post, multi-chargepoint locations are listed with the number of chargepoints first, so that's why the post is shorter than in previous months.

2023.06.06 09:34 nissan_patrol Roar Ambition/ One Consulting experience review / 3 months

(TLDR Did a couple months at door to door sales crap company and here's a review of what takes place.).
After reading all of the posts about Roar Ambition and One Consulting and all the other "shell" companies under Jamie Talbots name, I figured let me see what this is all about as I had free time and wanted to see if I could make a quick few bucks between Uni. So here's the breakdown of what to expect.
Week 1: So you'll jump through hoops and be put into tests in which they'll ask very little of you to do but make you seem like the lucky winner and they see a lot in you. All this involves is a Zoom call and a couple of waffle questions.
Once you start you are put on a 3 day training, in which they give you a script and take you to the day location where you'll spend time watching someone more experienced, then by the end of the 3 days giving it a run for yourself once you've learned a load of high pressure sales phrases.
Week 2: So once you get here you've learned the script and you're looking to get sign ups. The majority of work they do these days is to do with getting Direct Debit charity sign ups. For each sign up supposedly you are on 55% commission depending on the campaign and how difficult it is to sign up on the doors. Personally I worked a dogs charity, it was 35GBP per signup commission and I believe it was another 30GBP being paid back to the company. They introduce common sales terms like, "ringing the bell" and "high rollers". Essentially a load of motivational crap to keep you on your feet. Pay is affected by what the customer asks of the sales team, age restrictions mostly.
In this second week I was pulling decent numbers and ended up at Gauchos for dinner with all the leaders of each of their offices because of my performance. Essentially this was free food while everyone brown noses Talbot about how grateful they are for a few hours. Not everyone does pull numbers and sales are mostly based on luck on who opens that door.
There is little to no skill involved, this isn't the Wolves of Warrington.
Week 3: Still haven't been paid for any of the sales you do, and you won't be until 3 weeks from your first sale. Not when you first start. This is when you'll start seeing "promotions" about this leadership scheme they have based on performance.
15 sales moves you up to being able to take new suckers on and teach them. Then once you have the next level of suckers you can move up one more and promote one of your suckers and so on. This goes all the way up until you have a 6 layer deep sucker stack. Obviously, once these suckers inevitably quit you need to replace them, so it's completely based on how long you can keep these blokes under you. Weeks start to slow down as you work long hours and get paid off complete luck. It is completely possible and likely you do a 50 hour week and get paid nothing.
Week 4: So ideally you'd be in position to hire new goonies on by now and start milking them, this is where the shell companies come in. So what you see on Indeed is many adverts from lots of goons looking to take in fresh suckers all to the same place. Talbot doesn't make 50 companies with 50 ads, he has lots of staff trying to take on fresh guys who all have their own "companies". This is why you see the flurry of adverts on Indeed with all the same style writing.
Week 5+ : Essentially from here on out it's the same old same old, get told about how close promotion is by a guy who only wants you promoted so he can move on from the shit job he's doing, and constantly wack on a smile as you walk 10km hoping someone spares you their account number and sort code.
Overall, it was a job. A terrible job, with fluctuating pay and painfully long hours. There is worse jobs out there in the world, but this one is pretty high up. Unless you truly are a fool you won't stay long, they'll pressure you into staying, (as now they need to find a new sucker and train them up). In a year you'll make more working any minimum wage job than doing that and you won't have to work half as hard or be half as lucky.
You'll see people all over this subreddit blasting it and telling you to stay away because it's crap, and they're right, but if you want some positives that came out of it then here they are;
- I'm net positive. I'm not rich, I didn't make loads of cash. I didn't even make enough to say my lifestyle changed particularly from when I was solely at uni. For the hours I put in I got very little out of it, but I was net positive which is expected when you work a job I suppose.
- Character building? Made me tougher and gave me some thick skin. Getting blasted all day and abused while walking up and down for 8 hours will do that. I can walk into just about any environment now and feel comfortable, as I've dealt with hostile people in some terrible places. After being told to F off 100 times in a day and still rocking up with a smile after builds you up into a bigger person. Probably better ways to do though.
That's about it. I'd advise the Liverpool Unis to warn people about Talbot as he will continue to snipe new students into it. That was an experience from someone who was good at sales too, couldn't imagine what it would be like for someone who didn't already know what they're doing.
Happy to answer any further questions.

Estimating the Cost of Your Ideal Swimming Pool

https://preview.redd.it/wltv7yk5oc4b1.jpg?width=2288&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1b5996e7f2b0b8933d82d4b7e399a8a96db25344
Planning to build a swimming pool is an exciting endeavor, but it's essential to have a clear understanding of the costs involved. Estimating the cost of your ideal swimming pool is crucial to ensure you can budget appropriately and make informed decisions. This article serves as a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process of estimating the cost of your dream pool.

Determining Pool Type and Design

Before diving into cost estimation, it's important to determine the type and design of your swimming pool. Consider the following factors:
Researching different pool types:
Explore options such as concrete, fiberglass, or vinyl pools to find the one that best suits your preferences and budget.
Exploring various pool designs and sizes:
Consider the size and shape of the pool, whether you prefer a traditional rectangular pool, a freeform design, or something unique.
Considering additional features and customization options:
Think about the extras you envision for your pool, such as water features, lighting, slides, or spas, as these can affect the overall cost.

Factors Influencing Pool Cost

Several factors influence the cost of building a swimming pool. Understanding these factors will help you estimate the expenses accurately:
Pool size and shape:
Larger and more complex pools generally require more materials and labor, which can increase the overall cost.
Construction materials and labor:
The choice of materials, such as the type of pool shell, tile, coping, and decking, will impact the cost. Labor costs for construction and installation should also be considered.
Excavation and site preparation:
The condition of your site, accessibility, and the amount of excavation and preparation required can affect the cost.
Pool equipment and accessories:
Pool equipment, such as pumps, filters, heaters, and automation systems, add to the total cost. Additional accessories like pool covers or cleaning systems should also be factored in.
Landscaping and hardscaping:
The cost of landscaping around the pool area, including plants, trees, paving, and outdoor structures, should be considered if you desire a complete backyard oasis.

Budgeting for Pool Construction

Once you have an idea of the pool type, design, and influencing factors, it's time to establish a realistic budget:
Setting a realistic budget:
Assess your financial capabilities and determine the maximum amount you are willing to invest in your pool project.
Obtaining multiple quotes:
Seek quotes from reputable pool contractors to get a better understanding of the potential costs involved. Compare the quotes and evaluate the breakdown of expenses.
Allocating funds for contingencies:
It's advisable to allocate a portion of your budget for unexpected expenses or contingencies that may arise during construction.

Additional Costs and Considerations

Estimating the cost of your ideal swimming pool goes beyond just the construction expenses. Consider the following additional costs and considerations:
Pool permits and approvals:
Research the permits and approvals required by your local authorities, as they may involve certain fees.
Pool fencing and safety features:
Depending on local regulations, you may need to install safety features such as pool fencing or alarms, which add to the overall cost.
Pool maintenance and ongoing expenses:
Factor in the cost of regular pool maintenance, including water treatment, cleaning, and potential repairs or replacements of equipment over time.
Energy efficiency considerations and costs:
Explore energy-efficient options for pool equipment, such as variable-speed pumps or solar heating, which may have higher upfront costs but can lead to long-term savings.

Case Studies: Examples of Pool Costs

To provide a practical perspective, let's consider a few case studies illustrating different pool costs:
Case study 1: Small fiberglass pool installation:
A small fiberglass pool with basic features may cost between $30,000 and $40,000, including excavation, installation, and basic landscaping.
Case study 2: Large custom concrete pool construction:
A large custom concrete pool with intricate design elements, advanced features, and extensive landscaping can range from $80,000 to $150,000 or more.
Case study 3: Medium-sized vinyl liner pool installation:
A medium-sized vinyl liner pool with standard features may cost between $25,000 and $35,000, depending on the complexity of the design and additional options.

Financing Options for Pool Construction

If your budget falls short, various financing options can help make your pool dreams a reality:
Loans or home equity:
Research financing options such as personal loans or home equity loans to bridge the financial gap.
Local incentives or rebates:
Explore if there are any local incentives or rebates available for energy-efficient pool installations, as they can help offset some costs.
Consider long-term costs and return on investment:
While the upfront cost of your ideal swimming pool is important, also consider the long-term savings from energy efficiency and the potential increase in property value.

Conclusion

Estimating the cost of your ideal swimming pool, particularly when considering a gunite pool, is a crucial step in planning your pool project. A gunite pool offers durability, customization options, and long-term value, but it's important to have a clear understanding of the associated costs.
By determining the pool type and design, considering factors that influence pool cost, budgeting for pool construction, and accounting for additional expenses, you can develop a realistic estimation for your gunite pool.
When estimating gunite pool cost, factors such as pool size, construction materials, labor, excavation, equipment, and landscaping all contribute to the overall expenses. It's essential to set a realistic budget, obtain multiple quotes from reputable pool contractors, and allocate funds for potential contingencies.
In the case of a gunite pool, the cost can vary significantly depending on the size, design complexity, and additional features desired. While a small to medium-sized gunite pool may range from $50,000 to $100,000, larger and more elaborate designs can exceed $100,000.
Exploring financing options, such as loans or home equity, can help make your gunite pool a reality, ensuring you can bring your dream pool to life within your budget constraints. It's also important to consider the long-term costs and return on investment, as a gunite pool offers durability and potential energy efficiency savings over time.
In conclusion, estimating the cost of your ideal swimming pool, specifically a gunite pool, is crucial for effective planning and decision-making. By considering all relevant factors, conducting thorough research, obtaining professional advice, and creating a realistic budget, you can embark on the journey of building your dream gunite pool. With careful estimation and budgeting, you can create a stunning and enduring pool that brings joy, relaxation, and value to your home for many years to come.

2023.06.06 08:23 tkpiou The Story Of How I Built My Successful GC Company by The Age of 26

This gonna be a long one but I figured id share my story after lurking here for a while to let everyone know that making good money, creating independence, and enjoying your business can all happen in a short amount of time!

I was a young lad back at the age of 17 trying to figure out what i was going to do with my life. I was barely getting through school, was more interested in working and making money. I was on a program where my senior year i only attended school 3 days a week and only went until 12:00pm. This gave me the opportunity to go work my awful part time jobs at car washes and car dealerships detailing cars. It was at this time i thought i could start a little side gig selling mobile detail service in my neighborhood. It took off and i started really getting client and making some money but nothing that would justify full time work when i graduated. I also did not really enjoy the work. I was always good with my hands, i worked on my own cars, built my own ramps and what not when i rode BMX bikes growing up and walls always able to create and see drawings in my head for assembly and put them to paper. I was set to graduate halfway through my senior year so i could start working.

My Father has been in the commercial glazing industry for his entire life, at the time of my graduation he had been at a very large midwest privately owned commercial glazing company as a project manager. He hesitantly despite knowing about my pot smoking and partying habits got my foot in the door and got me an interview and a job in the fabrication shop fabricating the glazing systems to go out into the field for install. I started out as the low guy on the pole just freshly turning 18, getting put with the grumpy ass old men to assemble frames and caulk all of the system dams for water control. I hated it. After about 2 months i got the opportunity to run the fabrication and assembly for a small commercial storefront project with 2 helpers in the shop. This meant i got all of the cut specifications, field an assembly drawings, and details. I essentially had to start with raw full length stock materials and cut, layout and install the clips and brackets, build the frames, caulk and weap, pack and ship the project. This is when i realized that i could actually do something with this because by this time i had essentially learned the ins and outs of every commercial glazing system on my own in my freetime from product manuals so i could at least set myself apart from the other guys in the shop. I finished the fab job 2 weeks ahead of schedule without any mistakes that had to be corrected in the field. I worked in the shop for another 2 weeks and the operations manager decided i should go to the field to learn the installation process since i had progressed quickly.

I started in the field the same way i did in the shop, they where testing me to see if i could handle the vulgar, raw, and miserable world of commercial construction field work. I spent 3 months on a large curtainwall and storefront installation project. I started by caulking dams on curtain wall that had to be stick built in the field. I then go promoted to setting glass and running oil covered vinyl all day to hold the glass into the system. They then bumped me up i got to sit in a boom lift all day and caulk ssg glazing systems. I at this point met a girl in a the state i was from on vacation and because things weren't going well at home and i kind of hated what i was doing i decided to move there.

I moved to this new state and secured a position at a company that built and installed their own residential and commercial glazing systems. Conservatories, folding glass walls, skylights, and more. The position i took was a field laborer traveling to install conservatoires throughout the northeast. I started with a crew of roughneck guys and quickly found my pace and was learning the system quickly, managing my tasks on my own, and the big thing was i became the go to guy for layout with the foreman. I really enjoyed layout and was damn good at it. After 7 months traveling i didn't like being on the road and by coincidence got a call when i was in Maine that next week from the management team that they wanted to bring me into their massive fabrication and manufacturing facility to better learn the system and the preparation process for everything before it got to the installers.

I went home and started working in the assembly department, essentially all of the parts for the structures where cut, pre drilled and prepped and the assembly team built the structures in the facility to ensure everything was going to work in the field. this really gave me the full up and up on the entire process of the system they produced and used. After 2 months i was brought in and offered a position in estimating.

I joined the estimating team and spent 6 weeks learning every in and out of their entire product lineup, pricing structure, how to assemble professional estimates and proposals and i learned intermediate level AutoCAD drafting. I essentially would get a project on my desk and draw the structure as it was to be built in cad then used the drawings to create my takeoff and bid the job. i did this for 6 months before i realized how awful the management, staff, turnover, and moral was within this organization. I made the dumbest move i could have ever made and left a job paying 70k a year to an uneducated almost 20 year old with no other employment lined up.

i did end up securing a position as a senior pm at another small commercial glazing company that set me up for failure by allowing their estimator to underbid every large project but ridiculous amounts of money before i arrived without anyone noticing. so every job that cam across my desk was a disaster from the get go. I spent 9 months putting out fires, managing gc relationships that where toxic due to the position i was put in etc. But i did learn critical project management procedures and how to deal with emergencies on the fly and client management in tough scenarios.

Fast forward a bit and i moved back to my old state with said girl and take a job at a failing commercial glass company as a field/shop laborer and stayed for 3 months. I Left and took an opportunity to try residential glazing by installing custom glass shower doors, i ran my own truck did 3 installs a day with a helper and did this for 9 months. I had an opportunity come up to work with one of those 1 day bath install companies that advertise religiously. I had just built my first home, my fiance was unemployed and i needed more cash badly.

I met with their operations manager and it was all layed out that i would be an employee but only would be payed a percentage of the cost of the sold job for the bathroom upon completion of install. I essentially had all control in my hands to make as much or as little as i wanted but it was all up to me. Despite the lack of a safety net i took the risk and accepted the offer. i trained with another installer for 2 weeks and set out on my own. Typically these companies sell these jobs for 8-11k depending on the exact scope and accessories. 2 man teams where typically doing a job in 12 hours or basically a day in a half and the jobs where all over the state. I thought there had to be a more efficient way to do it because i got 10% of the job sold price as my pay. by the time i paid for a helper, my fuel, and what not 800-1100 in 2-3 days wasn't enough. I let my helped go and decided i was going to do it on my own. After spending weeks trying new methods to get faster and create a better product i was doing install on my own in 8-10 hours and clearing 3-4k a week gross before taxes and fuel expenses. I was hungry to be successful and finally make good money. This continued for about 5 months until they hit a sales dead period and there wasn't enough work to keep all 4 install crews busy but maybe 1 job a week and i approached my operations manager about another opportunity in the company. Patio conversions

Essentially this was a window and door, bath, and conversion company. These conversions consisted of taking existing covered porches and patios and turning them into 3 season or 4 season rooms. so you got the whole package. layout, framing, insulation, windows and doors, electrical, hvac, and interior and exterior finishes. these job paid big. on average a job takes 5-10 days and pays out 8-16k dollars to the installer. of course i had a couple helpers but i was absolutely crushing it after only a couple of months. This is where i really started to learn the ins and outs of commercial construction.

One day i was approached on a Facebook page about a gentleman with a residential remodeling company near me that was looking for an operations manager. they specialized in high end luxury remodels and also made their own cabinets. I met with him and decided even though the operation seemed small and mismanaged i could make it work. I took a pay decrease so i could work less hours and be home more as my fiancé had just had our daughter and the other company didn't even let me off to go to the appointments.

What i didn't know was that the owner of this business was the slimiest most Narcisitic, ego fueled person i have ever met in my entire life. He was running a GC business with the expectation that every sub, employee, etc was going to be a LEGEND and create only the most perfect unmatched quality product when given low Quality materials, piss poor planning, awful schedules and communication, etc. I quickly learned that i was going to be burned if i didn't think of something quick because the castle was under siege and i saw what was coming. i am 21 at this time. Well inevitably the following week i as an operations manager trying to keep a sinking ship afloat and out in the field tearing up tile from an under slab plumbing leak from before i was at this place, trying to rebuild an entire kitchen in 3 days by myself and i just was over it. Told him that i was putting in my notice and was done. I get called into the office that Friday and was told i was being let go, i was given a personal check for my weekly salary of 1000 dollars and made to sign a non compete and hold harmless agreement if i wanted my pay. i was paid as a 1099 under the table so he wasn't responsible for costs associated with employees. Basically i set myself up to get screwed. i signed everything took my check and left. Check bounces, im broke, he wont pay and im jobless with a fiance and a 6 month old. This was the lowest i had ever felt in my life and i literally was about to loose everything.

It was at this time my wheels started turning and i realized that all of these residential companies i worked for had multiple things in common. The client communication was terrible, their execution was terrible, and their image was awful. They looked all shiny and great during the sales process but as soon as they had a contract and a check the client experience didn't matter. So i thought to myself, i know construction now, i now a fair amount project management and business operations, and i see a hole in the market. so i started my company with the little money i had left. i registered with the state, bought a logo from someone on fivver, made a facebook page, a wix website, and started marketing.

This was great but it takes time to pickup traction and get jobs, i wasn't going to make money being a handyman so i needed supplemental income with flexibility in my schedule. I connected with a local fence contractor who was small and needed and installer who got paid by the linear for building fences. The money was decent but the work was hard and labor intensive. But it gave me a chance to hire a couple guys and teach them how to do it so i could start jobs and leave the jobsites to run estimates for my company. After many free estimates and 1:00 am mornings in the office writing quotes i just wasnt getting the jobs i needed. I needed a way to make sure someone wasn't tire kicking before i spent time and money doing a free estimate. So i started charging $200.00 for an in home consultation and bid package which would be credited to the client in full if they used us for the project. This was not well received due to me not being able to present it correctly in the pitch over the phone but when i did holy shit it worked like a charm. my conversion rate on estimates went form 16% to over 65% in a matter on 3 months.

I started getting good big jobs in good neighborhoods, i started finding really great subs and built my list. I started building brand image, internal documents, repeatable procedures for every job etc. this went on for a year and a half and i finally made 85k take home my first full year in business. Then the covid thing happened.

I thought everyone is freaked out and doesn't want us in their homes for estimates etc. how do i difference myself and create a luxury experience for clients without being intrusive during the lockdowns. i had started modeling basic things in SketchUp and new there was a lot of opportunity in 3d rendering. so i shifted our model and we became a design build firm. So essentially we are selling a design and rendering package to clients with a bid so that they can see what their project would look like before we ever go under contract. The rendering sells the job no matter the cost as long as you have the correct client base and are pre qualifying well.

I had a friend i grew up with that had gotten an architecture degree and was doing SketchUp 3D modeling, renderings, and 2D architectural drawing sets for a shed company as a freelancer and we can up with pricing and decided i was going to pursue this model. So i learned how to be a sales wizard and started selling $1,500-$5,000 design packages over the phone before i ever stepped foot in someones home. we designed and went through the process and send them a price. if they use us they get a full credit applied to the job for the amount of the design if not they own the drawings and information. I was making 50% GP on designs for jobs that never sold just to go out and measure and spend some time going through it with my designer. Our close rate on paid design bids sent went to 86%. This was the end of year 2 going into year 3

Year 2 Gross Revenue was $364k
Year 3 Gross Revenue was $597K

This is all on my own using subs, no in house staff, off the shelf management software, no paid marketing. Just Facebook groups, referrals, and subs.

In June of Year 3 I streamlined my process. I farmed out all business management (bookkeeping, Payroll, Phones, Etc.) and created a concrete repeatable process and procedure system that would be used on every job to ensure consistent management and quality. I hired a project manager and got him trained to manage all of the subs and all aspects related to the field and installations.

I am Proud to say that at June 1 of 2023 at 26 years old with only one Employee we have contracted and collected deposits on $848,000.00 worth of work, our schedule is booked until the middle of September and we are on track to hit just over 1.1 mil in total revenue at an average gross profit of 47%.

I have no formal training in business management, project management or anything to get me to this point. i have spent countless hours researching, reading, failing, and fixing everything in my business. its a cut throat game but if your willing to work your ass off and never quit, do amazing work, and make sure you prioritize client experience start to finish you will have people waiting years for you to do their job.

We are booked through April of 2024 for outdoor projects. Find a hole in the industry in your service area and take full advantage and change the remodeling or building game so us contractors can be looked at as professionals who have earned our ability to enjoy what we have worked for instead of drunk hacks in a shitty pickup.

Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk, get to work!

2023.06.06 07:32 LordBobiscuis Is This a Scam? (Contract shown here)

I was at the gym the other day and was approached by someone who said that they were a model scout. I've never been approached by a scout but I have been told to give modeling a try. I never looked into it until now. We talked and turns out this person used to be a photographer for an agency and would also develop/advise the models they worked with as they went on to become more successful and that they were an independent mother agency now. We had a meeting a few days after and they explained more of the industry to me. I even took some notes on the side. They said they would have me join their mother agency It went something like I get all the money I deserve and that they take a cut of whatever the agency that I'm with (in that territory) gets. So if I get say 90% and the agency I signed with gets 10%, they get half of what goes to the agency. They also explained flat rate percentages to me, but I do need more clarification on what that means as in the contract given to me, it says 33.3%. I can insert some of the text from the contract sent to me here: (I inserted dashes to keep this person's business and name private looks like ---- )

My problem here is the part about social media. Regarding anything I do in entertainment such as instagram, tumblr etc. Also the fees as the wording is a little tough. I'm getting this contract reviewed by others but my mom thinks this is some sort of "Slave Drive Contract" which is used in the K-pop industry. I'm also 21 years old and being asked to model isn't new to me. The person who gave this to me does have a legitimate background in the modelling industry. They do seem new to being an independent manageagent but have shown me some proof of success.

July 8th Excerpt from the Diary of Heaven White
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, with your right hand you save me.’
Psalms 138:7

Onu’s instructions were clear. I recognize that, and I am fully aware that it is not wise to defy his wishes.

But there are things he is not telling me. Things that weigh on his mind at all hours of the day. I see it in his eyes. I hear it in his voice. I had initially suspected that the damage caused by Casey LaBeouf’s betrayal had left him more disorganized and scattered than he let on. But no.

I’m not so sure that is the case, anymore.

Onu’s instructions were clear. I was to stay out of Family affairs. But in the end, I truly could not help myself. The blood of my family runs through my veins. Their affairs are my affairs. Perhaps in Onu’s eyes, I will need to earn my status, but that does not bother me. In fact for now, it might well be an asset.

Unbound by the constraints of the Family, I am free to operate without Onu’s direct oversight. He may not approve, but he can not stop me.

I knew he’d be out of town tonight. On what business, I wasn’t sure. But his absence was my opportunity. The man he had assigned as my escort - a gentleman by the name of Doug Coleridge, was attentive but still very much human. When I told him I was going to bed, it did not take long before he did the same.

I lay awake and waiting, listening as he got settled in the guest bedroom beside mine, and waited until I knew he was asleep. Then, after about thirty minutes, I left my room to begin my research.

Onu’s office was left unlocked. I closed the door behind me as I entered. Then, just like before, I began searching through his desk. This time, I was thorough. Most of the documents he kept there were focused on some of the cases he’d taken on. I couldn’t help but notice how many had popped up since LaBeouf had defected. It struck me just how thinly he was spread. I left those folders alone after skimming through them. It was nothing for me to tamper with.
I left that drawer as I found it, before going through another. The documents there seemed to be more personal. There was a handgun, which I carefully set aside, some trinkets, pens and old newspaper articles.

Now those seemed very out of place. I skimmed through them and found no mention of LaBeouf. Most of them detailed an event from several years back. The murder of the Stone family. I couldn’t see why Onu would even care, until I saw the photograph of a woman.

Diana Stone was the name under it, and the woman was identical to the girl in the picture on Onu’s desk. At last I could put a name to the face. I glanced up at the picture of the woman, comparing the two before deciding they were the same person. I paused, studying her for a few moments longer. Her eyes were terribly familiar. The same burning amber as the eyes of the Girl who’d pushed my Father. For a moment, I caught myself wondering if they were one and the same, and skimmed through the story. The only useful data it provided, was that Diana Stone had died twenty years ago. A relative, perhaps? I’d need to look into it. But now was not the time. I returned everything to its proper place, and continued my search. Finally it bore some fruit.

The files on LaBeouf were plentiful, although disorganized and difficult to decipher. Most of it was from before his betrayal, and I sorted it into a little pile while I read through the newer material. There was very little on him currently, Onu’s notes and scribbles were vague as usual, although they often needed to be. He couldn’t afford to leave his secrets out in the open. I’d need to check the things he didn’t write down.
I looked over at his computer. What I was thinking was a brave move, and not without its risks. I’d not only need to be smart, but careful. A shake of the mouse brought up his login screen that requested a password. There was no hint given, either you knew it, or you did not. I admittedly did not know it.

I glanced at the framed picture of Diana Stone. It was a wild guess, perhaps guessing was a mistake, but it was all that I had to go off of. Aside from her possible connection to my Father’s killer (a connection that was only a half baked theory, at best) she was nobody special. She wasn’t part of the Family. The article I’d read had stated she was a dancer, and I doubted Onu had enough affinity for dance to idolize a dead small time ballerina. No… she was special to him, for some reason. Perhaps special enough to guard his secrets. I typed, ‘Diana’ into the box. His computer opened up to me, and from there, it was trivial to open his email. It’s so convenient how computers save passwords, isn’t it?

From there, it didn’t take long to find some more useful information.
It seemed that I’d underestimated Onu. He’d kept his eyes all too closely trained on LaBeouf’s brother. There were copies of emails that he’d sent, and a few barely useful status updates that one of his shadows had sent him.

The would-be senator hadn’t contacted his brother directly to their knowledge, and Casey’s disappearance had been marked by the disappearance of another man involved in LaBeouf’s defection. This man’s name was Steven Love. A police detective and it wasn’t exactly difficult to determine that their disappearances were likely connected. I found little on him aside from a file attached to an email. There was no concrete evidence tying him to LaBeouf, other than the two men had seemingly left town at the same time, and Love had more or less dropped off the face of the earth since then. He unfortunately seemed to be another dead end. The name only came up once in another email, that suggested he was the one to whom Casey had spoken to. Aside from that, no picture, no address, nothing. Frustrating, but I kept digging. There was little else to find, but not quite nothing.
In one of the emails, from Kasting, there was a footnote that made me go back and look at Love’s files. He had a partner, a man by the name of Vincent Bennett. There were no files on him, but the footnote read as follows.

Terry spoke with Bennett, about a week before he went dark. Lexi followed up on it. Can’t find any connection. Bennett says he’d stopped working with Love before he disappeared and he’d heard of LaBeouf, but didn’t work on the case. We’ll keep an eye on him, but I don’t think he’s behind what happened.

Kasting seemed to think that this Bennett man was a dead end… but I made a note of the name anyways. Perhaps if Kasting couldn’t get the Detective to talk (assuming he even knew anything at all), I could. I wasn’t sure how… but I was sure I’d think of something.

Intrigued, I skimmed a little further until I found another email from one of Onu’s other shadows.

I looked into that weird address that was contacting Matt. Far as I can tell, it’s legit. Maybe he just likes Japanese cartoons? TMFI.
-Lexi

How bizarre. I looked a little further until I found another reference to the address that had been contacting Matthew LaBeouf. It was a copy of one of the emails that had been sent to him.

Hi Matthew!

The image was signed with a little pixel art image of a character with short blue hair. I reread the email a few times, before finally finding a copy of the email one of his Shadows had sent the same address.

Hi Alexis!
We’re sorry to say that the item you’re looking for is currently out of stock! But if you really, really, reeeeeally want it, we can totally contact you when it comes in again! -Sammy

The same little cartoon character was there by the signature, and I closed out of the emails. I couldn’t make heads or tails of them, so for now, I decided to leave it alone. I moved on to see what else I could find, before a voice in the darkness interrupted me.

“Y’know this is the exact thing I’m supposed to stop you from doing.”

I looked up, to see a shadow in the door of the office. The light came on, and I was greeted by the sleepy, but sternly disapproving face of Doug Coleridge. He was a tall, broad shouldered man in his early forties with thick hair that was just starting to gray and intense brown eyes.
“What’s the harm in curiosity?” I asked.
“You ever heard that old saying ‘Curiosity killed the cat?’” He asked, his voice still heavy with sleep.
“Well then I’d have plenty to fear if I were a cat, wouldn’t I?”

He sighed, and approached me to turn off Onu’s screen. “Don’t be a smartass, Heaven,” He said. “Your Uncle told me to keep you out of this stuff for a reason. So do me a solid, and don’t get us both in trouble.”
“I’m just reexamining what he already knows.” I said, “Technically I haven’t done anything yet!”
“What did I just say about being smart with me? Leave the LaBeouf thing alone. It’s none of your business.”

“He betrayed the Family. Of course it’s my business.” I replied, “If I want Onu to take me seriously, then I need to contribute. Simple as that.”
“A lot of things I’d have figured you for, kid. But a glory hound wasn’t one of them” He said, “They’re never gonna to catch LaBeouf, you know that, right?”

“Never is a harsh word. I’m not doing it for repute. If Onu won’t give me an opportunity to contribute, I’ll make my own.”
“Yeah, great idea. I’m sure it won’t blow up horribly in your face,” Coleridge said dryly. “Let me know how you plan on doing that.”
“Well, I could use the help… if you were interested,” I offered.

Coleridge raised an eyebrow at me before scoffing.
“Last time I checked, I worked for Robert, not for you.”
“Oh come now! Say we did find him, it’d look good on both of us!” I said.
“I’d also be crossing one of the most powerful men in the city.” Coleridge pointed out, as if expecting me to have some sort of answer for that.
“We’d be doing him a favor.” I noted.
“Yeah, I don’t think he’ll see it that way when you get caught,” Coleridge said before sighing. “Look, I admire your dedication, I do. But like I said before, there’s a damn good reason Robert doesn’t want you involved in this.”

“Is there?” I asked, “Because I don’t see it! Do you?”
Coleridge was silent for a moment, staring intently at me. Then, finally he sighed.
“Go get dressed,” He said, before turning to leave.
“Why?”
“Because you and me are going for a drive.”

“To where?” I asked, feeling a slight pang of concern in my chest as I followed Coleridge out into the hall.
“You wanna know why your Uncle doesn’t want you involved in this? I’m gonna show it to you,” Coleridge said matter of factly.
I watched as he disappeared back into his bedroom, before quietly going to mine to find some clean clothes.

***

Coleridge and I drove in relative silence through the night. He didn’t tell me where we were going, even when I asked and were I a more paranoid woman, I might have worried that he had some kind of ill intent.

I’m not sure if I should have been surprised or not when he brought me to a hospital.
“Is this some sort of underhanded threat?” I asked, as he pulled into the underground parking lot.
“That’s not what I’d call this, no.” He replied as he pulled into a spot. He got out of the car and I followed.

“I don’t know how much you know about your Uncle’s reputation, but Robert isn’t the kind of man you double cross,” He said as he headed for the elevator. “If you ask me, Casey had some real balls, doing what he did.”
“And yet Onu still hasn’t found him,” I noted.
“Trust me, he’s been looking,” Coleridge said. I followed him into the elevator and he hit a button, taking us up to the 6th floor.
“So I’ve seen. And it would appear that all he’s uncovered are anime body pillows. That’s hardly progress, if you ask me.”

Coleridge chuckled.
“Saw those emails, did you?” He asked. “But no… use your brain, kiddo. You really think your Uncle is going to keep the juicy stuff in his emails?”

He might have had a point there. The elevator doors opened and Coleridge stepped out. I followed him. He led me through the pale linoleum halls of the hospital, although to where, I really wasn’t sure.
“After LaBeouf skipped town, Robert sent the usual guy he hires for this kind of stuff after him. Travis Gordon. Can’t really say that he and I were ever friends, but I worked with him from time to time… long story short, he was one a ruthless son of a bitch.”

“If he was, you would have thought he’d have found LaBeouf by now, wouldn’t you?” I asked.
“Yeah, you would’ve. Heck, maybe he did find him… not like Travis would tell us.”
He led me down a short hall, before pausing in front of a door.
“Why not?” I asked, before noticing the name on the door.

Travis Gordon.

I looked back at Coleridge.
“If this is some sort of elaborate prank, Mr. Coleridge, than you can save your energy and-”
“You wanted to know why Robert doesn’t want you involved in this. I’m showing you,” Coleridge replied plainly. “You wanna know why he’s not putting more effort into chasing LaBeouf? Go through that door. See for yourself.”

I stared at the door again. Suddenly the world around me felt a little more present. The ground beneath my feet felt a little more real. I stared at the door, but I couldn’t open it. Coleridge stood beside me, watching me quietly. After a while, he just sighed.

“Let’s go,” He said, getting up to leave. “It’s probably best if you don’t tell Robert that I brought you here. I don’t think he’d-”
“What happened to him?” I asked.
Coleridge looked back at me.
“What happened to him?” I repeated. “He was injured, right? What happened to him?”
“I don’t know,” Coleridge replied plainly.

I looked back at the door. Coleridge stood waiting for me.
“Tell you what, I know a good diner just down the street. Best cheesecake in town. My treat. We’ll go home, forget about this whole thing and-”

I opened the door and stepped inside. Coleridge’s voice died in his throat.
The room I entered was dimly lit, but I could see the hospital bed and the figure lying on it. I could hear Coleridge’s footsteps behind me and looked back to see him standing in the doorway, his expression grim. He didn’t say a word to me.

Slowly, I approached the still body of Travis Gordon. I could hear the steady beep of a heart monitor and the rhythmic hiss of oxygen. In the dim light of the hospital, I could see that his eyes were open. I paused, thinking that he might have been awake. But his eyes weren’t focused on me. They just stared thoughtlessly up at the ceiling and it took me a moment to realize that the only reason they were open, was because he had no eyelids to close.

My stomach turned as the realization hit me, and as I stared at Travis Gordon’s face, each new mutilation became clear to me.

Someone had taken a knife to his face, cutting away flesh and letting it fester and scar. In some places, I could even see exposed bone. What was left of him barely even resembled a person anymore. He had no nose, no lips, no cheeks… his face had been almost completely butchered!

I clamped a hand to my mouth to keep myself from screaming and took a step back, right into Coleridge’s arms. He stared down at Travis Gordon with an expression that was somewhere between sorrow and disgust.

“What… what happened to him?” I asked.
“Last we heard from him, he was following up on a lead in Toronto. Then about three months later, they found him on a plane, looking like this… they needed to use his dental records to ID him.”

My stomach turned.
“They took his eyelids, his tongue and did that to his face… they cut his fingers off at the second knuckle and castrated him. His spine is broken. He’ll never walk again, and God only knows how many drugs they pumped into him… I guess the one small silver lining is that I don’t think he’s really in there anymore. Far as I’ve heard, he doesn’t know who he is, where he is or what happened to him. He’s just… gone.”

I saw Travis shift slightly and saw his eyes move toward me. My breath caught in my throat. Coleridge stared at him, but didn’t say a word. He just put a hand on my shoulder. Travis’s breathing grew heavier. I saw him try to open his mouth, but the only sound that came out was a dull, wet gurgling noise.

Coleridge pulled me toward the door, and I followed. I couldn’t look anymore. He closed the door behind him, and I heard him let out the breath he’d been holding the entire time.
“You wanna know why your Uncle doesn’t want you looking into LaBeouf? You wanna know why he asked me to keep an eye on you? That. That is why.”

I didn’t reply.

I couldn’t.

“Whoever did that to him… and I say ‘whoever’ because it sure as hell wasn’t LaBeouf, they could’ve killed him. Instead they sent him back here to us.”
“But why?” I asked, looking over at Coleridge.
“I figure it’s a message,” He replied. “Back off.”

He turned and headed down the hall again, back toward the elevator.
“Well… message received, loud and clear.”
“So whoever did that, they’re just going to get away with it?” I asked, “Onu’s not going after them?”
“Yeah, surprisingly he’s not sending anyone to look for the person who cuts peoples faces off and tortures them until they’re a gibbering mess. Can’t imagine why,” Coleridge said.

I stared back at the room, before quietly following him back to the elevator. We rode down in silence.
“Like I said before, it’s probably better if you don’t tell your Uncle I took you here,” He finally said, breaking the silence between us. “And it’s probably best if you drop this whole LaBeouf thing.”

The elevator doors opened and Bennett stepped out again, back into the parking garage.
“What about following up on some local leads?” I asked.
He paused, and though I couldn’t see his face, I knew he was rolling his eyes.
“You’re joking, right?” He asked, looking back at me.

I wasn’t. I was dead serious.
“If there’s nothing to find, what risk am I putting myself in?” I asked, “And if there is something to find, we can give it straight to Onu. You said that Travis had gone to Toronto, right? We won’t even be leaving town! And you’ll be with me the entire time!”
“Are you… are you actually serious right now?” Coleridge asked, “Did you not see what happened to the last guy who went poking around here!”

“Yes and clearly he was onto something!” I argued, “Whoever did that to him… they were trying to scare us, and clearly they’ve succeeded!”
“Yeah, cutting a guys face off tends to do that,” Coleridge scoffed. “And considering how your last assistant got hit by a train, I’m really not a fan of what this little investigation of yours might do to my life expectancy!”

“Things will be different this time!” I assured him, “You’re not my Father, you’re different, more experienced! I only want to follow up on one thing, at least help me with that!”
“No! That’s my final answer!” He said.
“Fine, then if you won’t help me I’ll do it myself! You may be assigned to keep an eye on me Mr. Coleridge, but unless you plan on physically restraining me, you can’t stop me!”

Coleridge opened his mouth to argue, before signing and rubbing his temples.
“For Christ’s sakes, woman!”
“You’re not supposed to take the Lord’s name in vain.”

He gave me an incredulous look, before finally giving in.
“Fine, fine… if it’ll get you to drop this, I’ll help… What is it?”
“I want to follow up on a lead. A man named Vincent Bennett. That’s all.”

Coleridge considered it for a moment before sighing.
“I’m gonna regret this, aren’t I? Alright, fine… I’ll help you with this, and then we’re done. Deal?”
He offered me a hand to shake, and I shook it.
“Deal.”

2023.06.06 07:07 StraidRoenna 24/PST/PC want a group to try new games with.

Yo, name's Ryan. Always been into RPGs and indie co-op games. Not really into shooters anymore but maybe could be convinced. I'm kinda semi-casual, want to succeed but don't like long term grinding/getting super committed to one game. Not interested in online survival/base building games. Grew up playing video games from young age so have played a decent variety.
Games I'd like to play w/ a group:
Just looking for friends to play random co-op games and PvP with. I have time and don't mind making commitments.
can dm me, have disc.

2023.06.06 04:35 Zealousideal_Alps500 I can't stand the algorithm...

Doordash just feels like a scam sometimes... I started a dash and literally every order came through, going out of the zone andpaying too little... like no, I am not delivering 2 cities over just because the customer likes that restaurant!! Any9ne know how to get around this crap doordash keeps pulling? I want my AR to be high, but they literally force you to decline half the orders that come through and it all just feels scammy to me.

2023.06.06 04:05 Torgo_the_Bear [Analysis/Ramblings] Real World locations in the Pokémon World, and how they may be connected to the Kalos War

Pokémon lore has been a huge hyperfixation for me lately, and a completely random thought crossed my mind recently that I just had to attempt an amateur analysis post on. These may entirely just be the ravings of a madwoman, but I hope that I can still make you think a little anyway.
To put it simply, I am proposing that whether or not real world locations exist in a Pokémon timeline determines if the Kalos War (and subsequently Mega Evolution) occurs in said timeline.
In order to properly back up my claim, we should first review every instance in which a real world location is referenced within the Pokémon canon. Please keep in mind that I am only using the canon portrayed by the games (with one exception). The anime, manga, TCG, and other various sources such as the Detective Pikachu movie follow completely different canons, and will not be considered in this analysis. So please don't spam me with comments with things like "What about that time Ash mentioned Minnesota!?"
Side note: There are also various references to Real World people and companies, such as the presence of Nintendo consoles, real game Freak workers appearing in the games, and even Pokémon species being directly named after and/or inspired by real athletes and actors. However, I will not be considering these.

A list of Real World references in the Pokémon canon (by nation)

Guyana/South America
Arguably the most infamous of the bunch, hence why I placed it first. In Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, the Pokémon Mansion journals on Cinnabar Island describe Mew as having been discovered in Guyana. This reference is removed in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as well as in the (presumably) game canon compliant anime miniseries Pokémon Origins.
While Guyana specifically is not mentioned, Mew's Pokédex entries in Pokémon Stadium and FireRed refer to it living in South America, the continent in which Guyana is located.
In Pokémon Silver, FireRed, and SoulSilver, Xatu's Pokédex entries mention South Americans as the ones who claim Xatu can see the past and future.
Japan
In the original Japanese versions of Pokémon Stadium and FireRed, Ponyta's Pokédex entry states that it can leap over Tokyo Tower in a single bound.
In the Japanese version of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Blaine refers to Kyoto.
In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, a Guitarist describes his instrument as being Japanese.
United States of America
In all of his appearances prior to Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, Lt. Surge is described as "The Lightning American." FireRed and LeafGreen expand this a little more in dialogue from the Pokémon Journal, mentioning that he was a pilot in America. In Surge's latest appearances, references to America have been removed.
China/Nepal
Pokédex entries for Arcanine in Pokémon Yellow, Stadium, Gold, FireRed, and HeartGold state that Arcanine is a legend in China. In later games, this reference is instead changed to vaguely mention "the East" instead.
In Pokémon Stadium and FireRed, Parasect's Pokédex entries mention China as well. Like Arcanine, these references are removed in later games, no longer referring to any country or region at all.
In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Fisherman Bronson of the Battle Tower refers to Chinese legends.
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, Delibird's Pokédex entries state that it helped an explorer reach the top of Mount Everest, which is located in both China and Nepal. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, this is changed to say "the world's highest mountain" instead.
Russia
In Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, Scientist Taylor in Silph Co. mentions an international branch of the company. In the Japanese versions, he describes it as being located in Podkamennaya Tunguska, while in the English version, he describes it as being located in Tiksi. These are both Russian localities.
France
In the English version of Pokémon Stadium, Ponyta's Pokédex entry states that it can leap over the Eiffel Tower in a single bound.
India
In Pokémon FireRed, Pokédex entries for Raichu and Gastly both describe the Pokémon as being capable of knocking out Indian Elephants. This is changed to refer to Copperajah instead in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
Australia
In Pokémon FireRed, Ponyta's Pokédex entry states that it can leap over Ayers Rock in a single bound.
Antarctica
In Pokémon Emerald, Regice's Pokédex entry claims its body is made from Antarctic ice.
Kenya While not explicitly confirming the existence of Kenya in the games, a Spearow nicknamed "Kenya" can be obtained through an in-game trade with Webster the guard in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.
The Pacific Ocean
Poliwrath's Pokédex entries in Pokémon Gold, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, and X mention that it can swim the Pacific Ocean. This is actually the only example I've found of a Real World location being mentioned in a game with Mega Evolution in it, thanks to X. However, this reference is removed as early as one game later in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which vaguely refer to "the ocean" instead.

So there we have it. As far as I know, these are all the games' direct references to Real World locations. Now... what is one thing they all have in common? Every single one of these references, excluding the mention of the Pacific Ocean in Pokémon X, are featured in games where Mega Evolution doesn't exist! Due to this, I restate my proposal: Whether or not real world locations exist in a Pokémon timeline determines if the Kalos War (and subsequently Mega Evolution) occurs in said timeline.
I believe that in any timeline where Real World countries are canonically present, the Kalos War never happens, the Ultimate Weapon is never fired, and Mega Evolution never comes to be. Why does it work this way? Well, I can't really confirm anything concrete. But I would like to suggest that perhaps, in timelines where Real World locations exist, Kalos does not exist at all, and is replaced with France. In these timelines, France does not have access to the Ultimate Weapon, and therefore never produces Mega Evolution. This can be backed up by the mention of the Eiffel Tower, as we saw earlier.
But yes, this is already disproven right away by X mentioning the Pacific, right? Well, I guess that's true. But honestly? I feel like this only particularly seems to matter in regards to countries. An ocean happening to share a name with one of ours isn't that out of place. Heck, the Kanto region shares a name with the Real World part of Japan that it is inspired by! So, I personally don't believe that the Pacific Ocean changes the outcome of my theory.
Now yes, I fully and completely admit that this is a bit of a crackpot theory. It kind of has the same energy as pointing out how 9/11 never happens in the Muppets universe during the alternate timeline where Kermit is never born. But regardless, I had fun putting this together, and I'd be happy if this made you think about things a little. Thanks for reading!
