2023.06.06 15:05 Tobric93 Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps! [Poll]

What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do?
  1. Complain. Message the mods of reddit, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at ModCoord.
  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support! Reminder to join our Discord! Coverage of events will continue there!
  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

Poll:

We, as moderators of the CompetitiveApex, don't want to make this decision for everyone. This should be decided by the community and for the community as it affects the community. Please choose how you would like us, as one sub, to participate in the efforts mentioned above.
Would you like us to go dark for two days, one day or not at all? The poll will run for 4 days and an update will be given this weekend.

2023.05.19 18:02 prankfurter Flair Up Fridays!

Flair Up Fridays!
Flair Up Fridays will be for all of the new CompetitiveApex members who have joined, who might not have flairs or know how to add them to their profile!
Q: What is a flair?
A: A flair is a way to show your favorite teams within the subreddit!
Flair Examples:

Mod is for mods only
https://preview.redd.it/pqy86312pp0b1.png?width=129&format=png&auto=webp&s=876eba02469584625d9a0549a5a4b4bf5b8e08a8

How to get a flair:
On new reddit on the right side of reddit you can click the edit flair button:
New Reddit
Old Reddit
Mobile - Use the menu button on the top right to bring up the above menu
Once you have done that there is a long list of all the flairs available the new ones are near the bottom of the list, you can search by typing a part of the flair.

https://preview.redd.it/zld63bwbpp0b1.png?width=721&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d680f574c56901e017eb533f564fa985bc0fb72

One thing to note for the custom flairs have text, you can't add emojis to it, but if you want some emojis to go with the custom flair, ask a mod and we will happily add them on!

for the ones with just emojis you can add them the new ones are :nessiedance: :apple:  :noaudio:

As an extra bonus, we have also now added all of the Legends (no ballistic yet, but he will be there soon!) you can add just like any of the team emojis, so they work in the custom ones that allow up to five emojis. just use the legend name ie: :lifeline: the only exception is Revenant since there is a esports org already in there with that name for him you just need :Rev: as well as buff and nerf emojis

2023.05.16 19:12 Nxhko Global Top 25 Power Rankings Week 7 (Y3-S2 FINAL)

Global Top 25 Power Rankings Week 7 (Y3-S2 FINAL)
This is the KP Poll, world rankings for Professional Apex Legends teams. Check out the alpha version of our website: KPPoll.com! Please comment below any suggestions you may have for the site!
Introduction
These Power Rankings are a collaborative effort between the Subreddit, Discord, and the greater community. Rankings are determined by a selective panel consisting of members of both communities, as well as notable talent and creators from the scene.
How it Works
This ranking is based on the AP Top 25 rankings common for collegiate sports in the US. Every panelist is given a ballot to submit their personal ranking of the top 25 teams. Similar to Apex, the higher a team is placed on a ballot the more points they earn. A #1 spot on the ballot gets that team 25 points, with each subsequent place receiving one less point all the way down. The points totals are then tallied up across all ballots to get our consensus Top 25. Teams that received votes, but not enough to break into the threshold will be included as honorable mentions.
It is by design that there are not strict guidelines panelists on how to rank teams. However, emphasis is put on the global nature of this ranking. Every panelist is asked to consider what these teams would look like in a LAN environment right now, and what are their chances of getting there. This is because at LAN there are only so many spots for the larger regions. Not every strong team can qualify, meaning some teams in larger regions may be absent from this list in favor of teams from the smaller regions that are on pace to qualify for LAN.
Given we already know which teams have qualified for LAN already, this weeks top ranking is only including those teams and where we believe, as of right now, how they will place on LAN. Our panelists made their decisions based on their performance throughout the season and how we believe they'll stack up to international competition.

2023.04.12 20:38 prankfurter Top 50 most used flairs on r/CompetitiveApex (Take 2)

So my bad, I had a bug in my code and the post yesterday was only counting about half the people with flairs, so this post has been updated with the accurate counts.

For any nerds out there, I was getting empty strings that was breaking my code, I think it is people that had set a flair and then removed it, so in my loop iterating through all the flairs to count them I checked for null strings and then broke, I forgot that a break in python exits the loop not just iterates on the next item in the list. So I fixed my logic and everything is working correctly now.
Sorry for the wrong info! original post with updated counts, and now 50 instead of 25, below:
Hey everyone!
In the last weekly Flair Up Friday post, u/gandalf45435 had the suggestion to get a count of flairs on the subreddit.
I wrote some code to pull the data and discard duplicates (ie someone who has 3 TSM flairs in their flair is only counted as 1 for TSM) I received the counts, and here are the top 50 flairs in use.
If you don't have any flairs put some on and I will be redoing this count later and we will see how this list changes, see the Flair Up Friday post on how to set your flair if you are not sure, or reply to the sticky comment below and we will add them for you!

Global Top 25 Power Rankings Week 2 (Y3-S2)

Introduction

This ranking is a collaborative effort between the Subreddit, Discord, and the greater community.

The #1 spot on the ballot awards that team 25 points, with each subsequent place receiving one less point all the way down.
Not every strong team can qualify, meaning some strong teams may be absent from this list in favor of teams from the smaller regions that are on pace to qualify for LAN.

2023.03.16 17:08 Tobric93 Pinning Post Deletes Post Content

We had an individual make the below post on our subreddit. Shortly after it was posted, I pinned the post to our subreddit as it is original content.
After the post was pinned, I noticed that some of the pictures that were included were just gone. I figured it was just a mobile thing. Others commented the same except they were on desktop. I reached out to the OP and after review half of the post was just gone. Pictures and all.
https://www.reddit.com/CompetitiveApex/comments/11r5uw1/how_bad_is_tsms_situation_exactly_and_how_is
Please help. This might be the second post we almost lost due to the pinning issue. Our state of the sub post disappeared like this too and I was lucky I had a tab open and didn't refresh it.

2023.03.12 15:22 Zzzzfb Thank you r/CompetitiveApex

Howdy Howdy,
My name is Benjamin "Zephyr" Fossitt and today I make my debut on Pro League.
5 years ago I made the decision I was going to become an esports caster. 2 years ago I made the leap of faith and quit the main game I covered. In it's stead, I started to pursue Apex Legends with the goal of Pro League in my mind. I was always told the best casters are equally the best fans and I knew when it came to Apex Legends it would be a home I could truly love. From the moment I started casting Apex, I found myself within this subreddit. From "Vlad's wife's boyfriend" to the "TSM is washed" post, I've spent so much time browsing and communicating within CompetitiveApex. I knew it was a place where so many like minded people loved Apex in a similar way to myself. It's been a welcoming forum where I've posted and chatted with so many of you about theories, teams, decisions, and so much more. From that, I've made friends and fans that to this day have been some of my biggest supporters. I absolutely would not be in the position I am today if it wasn't for all of you, so to put it simply:
Thank you.
P.S. - If your willing to go one step further, feel free to stop by the stream today and check it out or say hello. In the full beast that is Pro League, I'd appreciate nothing more than your support.

2023.03.05 20:16 Tobric93 r/CompetitiveApex State of the Sub Update - March 2023

CompetitiveApex State of the Sub Update - March 2023
Forword: We had some slight technical issues with the post and most of the writing was done by u/Nxhko so please thank him for putting this together.
Hello Everyone,
Firstly thank you to every visitor and follower we've had on the subreddit since the last time we've done one of these two years ago now. With our first LAN of 2023 out the way and the second half of Pro League starting this week, this post is going to cover our growth and other analytics, MOD team changes and activity, rule changes and more. For the TL;DR scroll to the very bottom.

General Overview & Growth

Since our last State of the Sub update we've:
- total followers 30K -> 90K
- 35K new subscribers in 2022 alone
- 156K views on the Split 1 Playoffs Finals Posting with over 2,100 comments
- Over 1MM total page views on the day of the finals with over 40k unique viewers (half of the sub)
Once again I cannot express how much I appreciate each and everyone one of you for showing your support for the competitive scene and Apex community at large. Everything the MOD team decides on is based on how to create the best possible experience for everyone here to give back for you being here.

MOD Team Update & Expanding Our Community Reach

The MOD team has grown quite a bit over the last year. The team that has been here ( u/blacsm1t , u/ralopd , u/O_P_S & u/TheEMEF ) brought on myself, u/Nxhko and u/hostile_dunks ; we've since seen the addition of:
Our team now consists of moderators across various time zones, making it so at least one of us should accessible essentially 24/7. It's a great team of people passionate about competitive apex and it's been a pleasure working with them all. Finally, IPoopTooMuchAtOnce became unresponsive for a couple months and as such was removed from the MOD team. We hope he's doing well.
While we're not going to be posting the exact distribution of moderation actions taken by each of us it was pretty apparent that the subreddit was dropping in quality towards the start of ALGS Year 3 Split 1. Thankfully the addition of Tobric has been a huge help in steering it in the opposite direction. With all the work we've done since the sub is now in a much better space that it ever has been. With that being said we're still open to any and all feedback as we constantly try to improve.
In 2022 we saw the creation of the CompetitiveApex Discord which was essentially a passion project I took on. While I won't spend much time going into it, it has been a huge success to say the least. We've been fortunate enough to even have a handful of pro players, coaches, casters and other broadcast talent join. It's been pretty fulfilling watching this extension of CompApex subreddit become a place everyone can go for live interaction with other members. Shout-out to the MOD team over there, which also includes Tobric & Jean.
Given the success of the discord we've started our very own Twitter account for the Competitive Apex Sub. This will be used to share information about events, news and more!
All of that being said please never forget that the moderation team (and the Liquipedia team, where we get a lot of our information) is made up of volunteers in the scene. We aren't all knowing when it comes to the inner workings of the ALGS scene and don't always have all the information. While we do our best to ensure we bring as much relevant information to you guys as possible in a timely way, sometimes we may fall short. You guys have been awesome in terms of recognizing our efforts but just keep that in mind.

Update to Removal Reasons, Weekly Discussion Thread Update

Going forward, we've renamed the Removal Reason "Unrelated Content, Memes, Duplicate Posts and OT" to "Excessive Content, Memes & Duplicate Posts". In addition to it the description has been updated to include a link to Youtuber "Elben Gate" for those looking for Team POV VODs from ALGS tournaments and Pro League. With the growth of the sub we've seen an increase in the number of "quick question" posts or multiple posts about the same topic almost daily. The goal of the "Excessive Content" removal reason is to help alleviate clogging up the subreddit with posts that become overly redundant or tired so that higher quality posts can get more visibility. The "Duplicate Posts" removal reason was removed and duplicate posts should be reported under this Removal Reason as well. Examples of these kind of posts include:
  • Low quality Controller vs MnK debate
    • Goal here is to limit the number of these posts, not remove them completely
  • Requests for Team VOD PoV's
    • We've included a link to Youtuber "Elben Gate" where those uploads are found.
  • Multiple broken up posts regarding player or team drama
    • We will provide a link to a single main post on the topic
The Weekly Discussion Thread will gain more focus as we try to move some of that excessive content over there. Requests for team VODs for A Tier or S Tier tournaments can also be requested in the Weekly Discussion Thread.

What Does "Game Play & Highlights" Removal Reason Mean?

This is something that's been a bit of a point of contention since I've joined and probably before then. While it's hard to have a definitive "right" answer we do want to narrow it down more. While it used to read that "Tournaments / Scrims" were the only highlights allowed, when the subreddit is slow and there are no tournaments and scrims, the only game play we have from pros falls to ranked and pubs. A lot of that traffic has been moved to the discord server but we do still get those posts on the subreddit as well. So to clarify, this is how it will be moderated going forward:
  • Tournament and scrim clips are still acceptable
  • NO videos from pubs, no matter how insane
    • the only exception being if the player in said video is discussing something related to competitive apex
  • Ranked clips are allowed but only if they are moderate to high quality, or relevant to Comp Apex
So what exactly is moderate to high quality? This video by u/Avoxia-Gaming is a great example of a high quality post. While not every post has to be on this level, "clip & post" type submissions will be heavily moderated and are likely to be removed asap. This will obviously have to be monitored so the sub doesn't turn into "ranked highlights" so please report anything you feel doesn't meet the aforementioned requirements.

Tournament Schedule, Scores and Updates

Current and upcoming tournaments are going to be continued to be posted with similar formatting to what we've been doing recently. We've gotten very positive feedback regarding that and will continue doing it the way we are now. Under the ALGS Links section, we have useful links like a link to the official ALGS schedule and website. The "CompApex Calendar" is a crowd-soured calendar on Google run by Tobric and the other moderators of that will include all ALGS events, large NA and EMEA events including scrims and a variety of events for APAC N/S. The easiest way to follow upcoming events is to check out our Discord! There is a #tournament section that will be updated with a weekly schedule. In addition, There is an events section at the top of the discord that will show all of the events within the next 7 days.
CompApex Calendar Information
https://preview.redd.it/edkj3lqf0zla1.png?width=255&format=png&auto=webp&s=9b6b82e30de9fa901640b356a1e581b54040912b
In addition to having the calendar and Discord buttons under ALGS links, we will be making an "Overview" posting for each split of ALGS that will be pinned similar to what is still linked for the Split 1 Playoff Overview linked above. This overview post will also have links to the individual match threads that will be provided for each of the ALGS match days.
Regarding the scores from past, non-ALGS tournaments the best way would be to check the Discord under the "Tournaments" channel. There will be a thread that's updated with the Liquipedia Final Standings page. This thread will start from ALGS Year 3 Split 1 standings and include both ALGS match day results as well as other tournaments we make posts about.
There be more info about the calendar coming out in a posting Tuesday morning!

The Importance of Reporting vs Down-voting

There are times when certain comments or posts are made that break one or more of the subreddits rules. Whether this is attacking another member / pro player, making unacceptable remarks or making claims against a group of people. Whatever it is, while down-voting them into oblivion hides the content from others, even a single report brings it to the MOD teams attention. Down-vote those you don't agree with by all means but if you believe something genuinely shouldn't be posted please do take the time to report it as that brings it straight to the attention of the MOD team. The reports are anonymous and your username isn't linked to it in any way. Down-voting is good, reporting is better.

The TL;DR

- The subreddit has seen a lot of growth since the last state of the sub - 7 new MODs have joined the team - a Discord server has been created - removal reasons have been updated - "Gameplay & Highlights" removal reason fleshed out - ALGS Tournament Scheduling / Posting can be found in sidebar - please report malicious content and comments more!

Follow us on Twitter!

Lastly, Thank You!

If you made it this far then thank you for reading everything. Even if you didn't read it all thank you for being here on this sub. The amount of support the scene gets from this amalgamation of individuals is absolutely incredible. You guys have made this one of THE best competitive gaming subreddits on the site and it's been a pleasure moderating here so far. Not sure how often we'll be doing these State of the Sub updates but until the next one we'll see you all around and again, Thank you.
And finally we would love to give a huge thank you to all of the pro players, casters and Liquipedia volunteers that are active in our sub! People really do appreciate all of the AMA postings and the real insight that you are able to provide with your comments. If you would like to get verified with a player flair please send us a ModMail and we'd be happy to get you set up. We know you are always watching.

2023.01.10 21:23 Nxhko Custom Lobbies and The Possibility of Community Tournaments

Hello All,

So with the recent update dropping providing the ability for anyone to make public lobbies the possibility of community tournaments for competitiveapex is now very real. This is huge news and very exciting but it will take some time. Between the mods here in the subreddit as well as in the discord we'll be working on the logistics of this but it will take some time.

Once the teams have made notable progress on organizing an event we'll update the sub with another post but for now just know it's 100% on our radar !

Until then feel free to join the discord for other news and updates.

2022.12.20 14:09 Choblu Can this sub go back to being about Competitive?

I Don't know if there has been a post about this yet, but if FaZe guy's flair is relevant, this must be:
After seeing this user's comment, I want to make a post about this topic. This sub has become way too much about "Distrifo & friends", to the point where even a long-time lurker like myself has gotten completely lost in the lore. Off-season is not an excuse, we have a whole Major's worth of stats , storylines and roster changes to discuss, and EUL and BR6 finals just happened as well, how can it be argued that there is a drought? CompetitiveHalo just finished a year of having to wait 4+ months between each Major and just had the Optic Invitational cancelled. They still never hit this point as a forum. CompetitiveApex just had a pretty large gap of an Off-season and they never hit this point.
"But Supr made distrifo & others relevent in the sub" Yes this was an anomaly and clearly a mistake since he has made comments clearly expressing for it to end, I assume this is for many reason, such as being interpreted for harassment and also uprooting the sub in terms of content completely
I'm not asking anyone to leave the sub I just think the filtering of what is relevant to at least the Competitive side should be the focus of the sub, at least when nothing huge is happening , but I also think these users vastly overestimate their influence in this community, you guys aren't like CalibreJacob, Jacob got where he was because he actually made videos relevant to the community and was actually pretty good at it when he was matter of fact and got the news out decently quick, sure he went on to become one of the worst talents ever, but he actually served the community so he actually has worth and influence in the community.
In my opinion u/Devonire and u/adc1369 are right, I think you guys need to make a new sub or go and hang in discord, because if you guys are really about just seeing the lore of your reddit friends then why does it need to be here? You guys can DM or create Group Chats.

Someone should run a poll to see if people are alright with this kind of posting, during the off-season of course.

2022.12.16 17:00 Tobric93 ALGS Finals Survey Competition (EU/NA)

New year, new split, new stuff!
We are proud to present this years CompetitiveApex competition! - We have created a survey, to be filled out by you (viewers & players) to predict the outcome of the finals. We will be running the surveys for both NA and EU Finals that will be happening on Sunday 12/18. The survey results will be scored (see below) and winners will be announced on Reddit in the week after the finals (projected completion Wed/Thu - I have to work)!
Survey will close at the start of their respective match days on 12/18.
_________________
>> EU Survey Link << EU is now closed.
>> NA Survey Link << NA is now closed.
__________________
The questions and scoring are as follows:
This will be the largest chunk of the points. Most likely about half of them. Much like the power rankings earlier in the year, you will be asked to drag and drop the teams based on how you think they will do. Number 1 is the projected winner. Full points are awarded for correct answers and half points are awarded for being within +-1 of the correct answer for all 20 spots. Picking the winner correctly is worth more than picking 20th place correctly.

**Correct answer for full points and a decrease based on how far your guess was from the correct answer.

Questions, comments or concerns: Message me here on reddit / comment below / or discord Tobric#4461.
Good luck to all players playing in the finals and to all of you who have submitted your responses!

2022.11.29 15:28 BrandNewNeffew Is there a subreddit for in-depth discussions around strategies, team comps, etc. used by competitive or professional players?

I thought that’s what this subreddit was for, but all I’ve seen since joining a month or so ago has been trade rumors and LFT notices for professional players. There has not been a single post talking about the strategy used at the highest levels or discussions about really anything competitive-wise. Is it because not a lot of people understand the game at a high level, these types of posts banned, or am I in the wrong subreddit?
For reference, I’m comparing this subreddit in my mind to competitiveapex, which people do have some shit takes on, but at least there is some solid discussion.
