Post-op ileus & dysuria
2023.06.05 07:55 Liniera Post-op ileus & dysuria
I (35F, 155lb, 5'5") am currently dealing with post op ileus and dysuria following a laparoscopic cholecystectomy and I'm just trying to understand why this happened. The surgery went as planned outpatient, but I do vaguely remember waking up in extreme pain and nausea following surgery and was given diuladid and phenergan in addition to hydrocodone and Zofran. I was discharged as planned two hours after surgery. I went home and went straight to bed taking the hydrocodone and Zofran as prescribed throughout the day on schedule. I was able to drink Gatorade and an Ensure, but vomited when I tried to eat some crackers and chicken noodle soup in the evening. I took Zofran and my hydrocodone as prescribed and tried to sleep.
I had to return to the ER 24hrs after my surgery due to severe abdominal pain that was not responding to hydrocodone. I had a CT scan which revealed "Mildly dilated fluid distended loops of small bowel without transition point, which may be due to ileus versus developing bowel obstruction." When I complained of trouble urinating, they did a bladder scan and I was retaining over 450ml. I was admitted overnight and put on clear liquid diet only and given IV fluids, torodol, Tamulosin, and Zofran in addition to Miralax. The Tamulosin has helped the dysuria but I was still retaining 150ml at discharge. No signs of a UTI thankfully. The constipation finally broke this morning and I had severe watery diarrhea for several hours. I was discharged once I was able to eat a turkey sandwich without vomiting with Zofran. I am now home and haven't had a BM since I left hospital. They told me to walk as much as I'm able, so I did that. I've been drinking lots of water and eating frequent small meals despite no appetite. They told me not to take more Miralax at home due to the diarrhea, but I'm worried about the ileus coming back. Can it come back?
Why did this happen? Did I do something wrong? I had laparoscopic appendectomy last year, and didn't experience anywhere near this amount of pain. Since then, however, I have had a flare of ulcerative colitis (currently experiencing a mild flare), CDiff, and gastritis. Is my gut just very sensitive and easily inflammed? Could this have been prevented somehow? Was I high risk for ileus and dysuria and didn't know it?

My spouse and I made a massive pot of chicken noodle soup on 5/31 like we have many times. And by massive, I mean close to two gallons. We changed it up a little bit and added raw collard and mustard greens at the end. They were rinsed before they were added, but apparently not enough because I found a ladybug in my bowl. It had been in the pot maybe five to ten minutes, but the soup was hot and the lid was on. No one ingested it or even had it in their mouth. I had one bowl on 5/31 and a bowl on 6/1.
On 6/2 I started having more nausea than is usual, my stomach was rumbling and gurgling, I felt bloated, and at one point I had to book it to the bathroom and had dark green diarrhea. The second time I went it was still dark green but it was basically liquid. Thankfully we keep bathroom spray in both bathrooms because it was very much necessary. My appetite was nonexistent even though I could tell my body was hungry.
On 6/3 I was still having liquid diarrhea but it was more of a light green/yellow and still smelled awful. My stomach rumbled and gurgled while I was on the toilet, especially when I strained to make sure I was actually finished. I only had one bowel movement. My stomach continued to gurgle throughout the day, my appetite was still gone, and I still had bouts of nausea. I was still feeling bloated. Spouse said they were able to make the soup less bitter and we had been picking the greens out so I had two bowls.
Today is 6/4. I had a little bit of an appetite this morning and was able to eat some mashed potatoes but my appetite is mostly gone now. I’m currently on the toilet with diarrhea, stomach pain, and gurgling/rumbling. It’s slightly more solid than it has been and was more yellow than green but still has a hint of green.
What should I do?

2023.06.04 07:14 gamerhamter How I lost 20 lbs without exercising by eating like a skinny person
Hi guys! I’m on a weight loss journey and I’ve lost 20 lbs so far. I’m a 4’11 18 y/o girl and I’m currently 180 lbs. After years of eating a ton of food with no regard for how many calories I was intaking, I finally taught myself how to eat differently. All of my naturally eat “intuitively” which makes them skinny without exercising. I started adopting their habits while loosely counting calories and it’s made such a difference. Here are some tips:
- Eat slowly and chew your food. Eat with smaller silverware and on smaller plates.
- Either eat all of a small serving or half of a large serving. Eat the entire meal you cooked and portioned out for yourself but eat half of the pasta dinner at Olive Garden. Save the rest as leftovers.
- Eat fast food, but eat it smartly. You can eat fast food everyday if you wanted to and still lose weight. The important thing is what you order. A Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich and waffle fries is 880 calories alone and an extra 110 with Chick-fil-A sauce. You can eat the entire meal and eat less later, eat half of it, replace the fries with something that has less calories, or order something else entirely. You just need to budget your calories wisely so that you’re still in a calorie deficit by the end of the day.
- Don’t put yourself into the position to eat more. Microwave half the can of soup, save the rest for later. By halving your portion, you’ll eat it slower to savor the smaller portion, and you might end up eating less. If half of the can of soup isn’t enough, wait a little bit to see if you still want more. If you do, have the rest. Basically, start with a smaller portion and give yourself more if you want more.
- Write down what you eat. This might not work for everyone, but in my personal experience, keeping a food diary on my phone is a good way to remember what I eat and has helped me keep track of how many calories I’m eating.
- Drink water and get enough sleep! I know that these are really obvious tips but I had to include them. Drinking a gallon of water and getting the sleep my body needs has helped me lose weight.
- Eat for health and nutrition too, not just to eat. It’s okay to eat a snack just to have a snack, and it’s okay to have a meal you like because it’s a meal you like. But remember that food isn’t just for entertainment and it’s important to nourish our bodies as well. Try to incorporate fruits and veggies that you like into your diet and eating healthy meals if you can. Getting the right nutrients helps a lot.
These are all of the things I’ve stated doing that helped me get to the weight I am now. My goal weight is 120, so I still have a long way to go, but I see progress. My wrists are significantly smaller, I can see my collarbones sometimes, my face has more shape, my back is slimmer, and my back dimples are starting to show again. I’m finally making progress!! For the first time in forever, the light at the end of the tunnel feels reachable. I hope my advice helps you and that you reach your goal weight :) Feel free to share your own journey and weight loss advice in the comments.

2023.06.04 05:51 InfamousAstronaut349 It hit me
Note: I am a storyteller type of person so medyo lengthy siya but please bear with me.
I woke up at 9AM but went out of bed at 10AM. When I went outside, I checked what's our food for breakfast. I saw that lunch was already prepared but I saw that Lucky Me Chicken Noodles soup that was probably left for me. I wanted to reheat the noodles but the LPG wasn't turning on. My brother said that we already run out of gas. I was stunned for few seconds and thought that I need to buy already. I only have 3K+ left on my wallet and LPG cost around 900+ pesos here. I will be left with 2K+ after and I realized, I just had my salary last May 31. It's just the fourth day and this is all the money left.
I zoned out and felt emotional. I spent my hard earned money on bills only and I haven't bought anything for my self.
*For context, I am on wfh set up living with my parents and siblings. Fresh graduate last year and luckily found a decent job right after. Now, I just naturally ended up shouldering all the bills at home including groceries and my youngest brother’s tuition.
How difficult it is to be a ‘’panganay” and a breadwinner. I wanted to cry but I have no tears.
I've been planning to go out and treat myself for how many weeks now but I always end up not going because I feel guilty going out, buying stuff and satisfying my cravings alone. Now, I don't know if it's right to do that or not?

2023.06.03 20:34 Over-Comfortable-410 Soup way too bitter
Spouse and I have been feeling like crap, so we wanted to make a huge pot of chicken noodle soup to last us for a few days so we wouldn’t have to worry about cooking. We’ve made it in the past and it’s turned out fantastic, but we did it different this time and it’s so bitter. It’s upsetting my stomach and even the thought of eating it makes me nauseous. They’ve barely touched it as well and are kicking themselves because we’re on food stamps and this cost a lot of money to make. Please help me and tell me this is fixable 😭
Ingredients: • a whole lot of homemade chicken stock (made from rotisserie chicken bones, cilantro stems, jalapeño stems and seeds, celery leaves and ends, carrot ends (not leaves), a splash of vinegar, onion scraps) • 16oz of whole brown mushrooms, diced • 1lb carrots, diced • diced celery (I’m not sure how many stalks it was but it was probably at least two cups diced) • 2tbsp olive oil • 1tbsp homemade spice mix (I know it at least has salt, turmeric, paprika, pepper, garlic powder, curry powder, I think it also has onion powder, a little bit of cayenne powder, maybe some cumin also? I asked them but they made it so long ago they don’t remember 😂) • 2-3tbsp ginger paste (we ran out so I’m not entirely sure) • 3-4tbsp garlic paste (guesstimating) • 4-5tbsp basil paste (guesstimating) • 1-2tbsp cilantro paste (guesstimating) • 1-2tbsp jalapeño paste (guesstimating) • lemon juice • one box of gluten free pasta • diced chicken from two rotisserie chickens • one bunch of collard greens, chopped • one bunch of mustard greens, chopped* • 2-3tbsp horseradish mustard (guesstimating)*
Everything that has an * is what’s different than how we made it last time. I’m very much a “measure it out” person, but they’re a lot more confident in the kitchen than I am and have way more experience, so with the pastes and stuff I know it’s at least the smaller number because they wrote down measurements for those. They did all the prep work and I just threw everything in the pot in the order they told me to.
I heated up the pot and once it was hot I threw the mushrooms in. There wasn’t any oil or anything, just mushrooms. I cooked them at around medium heat until they started releasing liquid, then I pulled them out and put them in a bowl.
I put in two tablespoons of olive oil and let that warm up a little bit, and then the celery and carrots and spice mix. I stirred it around a few times and then put the lid on it for a minute, maybe minute and a half, and put in the ginger paste, basil paste, and garlic paste. Then I got overwhelmed because they had pulled out cilantro paste and jalapeño paste and hadn’t given me measurements, so they came over and added those as well as more of the other pastes and lemon juice. There was quite a bit of lemon juice. Maybe 1/4c. I stirred it all around and by that point the celery was starting to get translucent like they wanted it to. I put the mushrooms back in.
I threw in three cups of broth and started stirring it all up while scraping the bottom of the pot to get all the bits off the bottom. The broth was supposed to hiss a lot when I put it in but it didn’t hiss or spit up at me at all so I think I put it in too soon. I mixed it up really good and waited for it to bubble a little bit before adding the rest of the broth. It was at least a gallon and four quarts because that’s how much the pitchers were but there was another bottle of broth that we added and I’m not sure how much it held.
I let it heat up more and added the pasta and let that sit for about seven minutes with the lid on for the pasta to cook almost all the way. Then I put the chicken, collard greens, mustard greens, and horseradish mustard in, stirred it, and let it cook for two more minutes with the lid on until the pasta was done.
It was really good that first day, definitely a little bitter, but still really good. That was Wednesday. Thursday it was more bitter and that’s when my stomach started acting up. It hasn’t been touched since today (Saturday). I’ve been scooping the greens out because I think that’s contributing. They got thrown in raw, and spouse said they should’ve blanched them before putting them in.
Is there anyway I can fix this so this big ass pot of soup isn’t completely forfeit?
Thanks in advance if you made it this far. I tried to be as detailed as possible.

2023.06.03 19:37 lizardl0ver43 worried about food sensory issues in wisdom tooth surgery recovery—advice?
i’m getting wisdom tooth surgery this summer, and i am already panicking about what i’m going to be able to eat while recovering even though it’s months out. i have sensory issues with any mushy of creamy textures. the only soups i can tolerate are brothy soups with lots of firm textures in them (pasta, carrots, chicken.) i have never been able to eat mashed potatoes, creamy soups, applesauce, smoothies, yogurt, etc… basically, the entire standard list of recovery foods are things i have issue with, besides ice cream lol. obviously i want to be able to get adequate nutrition when i’m recovering and being able to identify even a few safe foods in the next few months before my surgery is the goal. i’m not necessarily seeking advice on particular foods i might tolerate as that’s obviously super individual, but what i’m curious about is—what advice do y’all have for overcoming these kinds of texture issues with foods? anyone been through anything similar and have ideas for increasing my tolerance to soft foods? my mom doesn’t understand why i have so much anxiety about this aspect of the surgery, but i feel like i need some sort of systematic approach to prepare myself. i can’t imagine just forcing myself to eat a bunch of soft foods for the first time ever WHILE in recovery.

2023.06.03 19:19 thatemokidd How can I get over food aversions?
The context is that I am a picky eater but not like how I picture an average American picky eater (fries, chicken nuggets, peanut butter and jellies, buttered noodles only diet). I’m Asian and love a lot of Asian foods. But I get mentally stuck with certain things. I like crab, but I don’t like shrimp or other shellfish. Like if a soup had clam in it I wouldn’t eat it. I don’t understand how people can slurp down oysters. I also get grossed out by the idea of eating pork ribs or pork chop or tonkatsu pork broth, but I can eat pepperoni salami and bacon just fine. Recently I’ve been wanting to try luosifen, which is made from river snails and pork broth. It looks so good to me but I mentally can’t get over the snail part. And I know people from Europe and Asia eat snails regularly. I want to know how I can “get over” not being ok with eating these foods.

2023.06.03 13:53 arrrbooey Graduated 06/01! Diet controlled until last week and a half
Hi all this subreddit has been so helpful so I wanted to write down how things went. I'm obsessed with my little guy and so happy everything went smoothly.
I have been diet controlled with some spikes from week 28 until week 37 when my fasting numbers started to spike from mid 80s into high 90 low 100s. No one told me in the Dr office that once I was on metformin it would be recommended to be induced before my due date until it was practically week 39.
Friday before memorial weekend we were expecting a call to schedule a date to be induced but no one called back. This got me nervous all weekend haha. We actually had a last Dr appt Tuesday after memorial and finally got a call at 9:30am. We confirmed to have it done 06/01 and arrive at hospital the night before to start. At the doctor's appt, I was told I was 1cm and confirmed baby head was down. End weight gain was about 20-22 lbs and my grown scans have shown he was not a big baby or caused any concern.
Arrived at the hospital at 7:50pm to check in. I had not eaten anything for dinner yet. Got settled in and changed by 8:30 and they had me take some oral medicine (forgot what it's called) to soften my cervix. Was told I could only eat until midnight. Ate a small bowl of chicken noodle soup from Panera and a couple of snacks I brought from home. Took one last metformin as well. Sleep was kind of sporadic.
At 8:30 my delivery doctor came in and gave me the rundown and checked that I was 2cm. I was then hooked up to the IV and started pitocin. After speaking with the nurse, gauging pain, and when the anesthesialogist would come to administer the epidural, at around 9:45ish I said I needed to ask for it. Pitocin contractions felt like I was going to explode from the inside out. I had to wait for the fluid bag to empty before they could start the epidural. By the time this was done, it was maybe 11am. Pain level was like an 8-9 and all I could do was breathe and listen to directions. Finally got it done and moved to lay down and wait for it to kick in.
Wow am I thankful for it. I do not know how I would have survived labor without it. It makes me wonder if a natural labor would have felt differently. I could now finally rest and wait until I am 10cm. The adrenaline from the contractions before the epidural wore me out.
I probably was in and out of sleep until just before 3pm. Around then it felt like the contractions felt a little stronger and I thought the epidural was wearing off. Right when I said that and pinged the nurse, my doctor came in, checked my cervix and said well you're 10cm, it's go time 😂
Here is where I thank my weightlifting journey of 3-4 years. My nurse held one leg and my husband the other. To push I was told to do a deep breath, hold, and do a constant push as if needing to poop for ten seconds. Do this three times per contraction.
I did this for maybe 15 minutes with them and my nurse said I'll tell you when to stop. It's insane how much this whole induction was with just nurses. I saw my doctor for maybe 20 minutes total. Anyways they got him in for the final pushes. 15 minutes later he was out!
Immediately he was placed on my chest and I thought I was going to me more emotional, but more so relieved that it was practically over and he was crying on my chest.
I only had a minor tear probably not large enough to be classified. Was stitched up and had mom and baby skin to skin time.
The pushing was the easiest part of all of this 😭. He came to be 6lbs 8oz and 20.5". They tested his blood sugars four times over the course of a day and they all passed! Thankfully my collistrum was enough and found a method for him to feed well.
Overall just so so so relieved everything worked out and thankful for all the previous moms on Reddit writing out their experience 🥰. I'm currently eating a fat stack of pancakes with syrup, orange juice, grapes, pork sausage, and scrambled eggs. 🫡 There's light at the end of the tunnel.

2023.06.03 13:46 dogmotherhood Got all 4 wisdom teeth out 24 hours and this morning a white rubbery thing came out of one of the holes. Was it the blood clot?
day 2 and I just woke up, brushed my front teeth and tongue only because my breath was deathly, then applied sockit gel. i had my husband do the top ones because I can’t see them. laid back down in bed and i feel something on my tongue on the side. i pull it off my tongue and it is a kind of rubbery white strip. I have only eaten a chicken noodle soup that i boiled the hell out of so that it’s practically slop, and ice cream.
When i had my husband check again, he said that yeah the white thing that was in the socket before is gone, and there is white stuff like that in all the other holes. I wonder if one of us scraped it off while applying the sockit gel. I’m really worried about dry socket - so far I have had no pain or swelling and was hoping to keep it that way. He can’t tell if the hole is completely empty. What should I do?
