I have started work on a new series of Game of Thrones maps
Hi everyone! I've started a new series of maps that depict the world of George Martin in detail. It was a lot of work to draw even the smallest details of Westeros, as well as to find out the location of each place from official sources, but I can't complain I enjoyed it. I've done maps on this subject before, but since then I've made some technical skill improvements and a few new books have been published, so it was time for a new series. I've tried to distinguish between places we know the exact location of and those we can only guess where they are. I hope you'll like it. You can find the map on my Deviantart profile.

2023.06.05 15:15 kbjone It's that time again...

While it's not quite the Stanley Cup Playoffs, college baseball's postseason is one hell of a trip with all kinds of twists, turns, and plenty of teams to point and laugh at from the first pitch of each regional to the glories of Omaha. (It's baseball, OF COURSE the crown jewel would be in the middle of... well, not quite nowhere, but close enough. As an LSU fan, it's that proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.)
-Without further adieu, let's cut to the chase with our first batch of eliminations. These teams are like those opening jobbers on Ninja Warrior, the ones who slip off the first obstacle and end up all soaked.
Northeastern, Florida A&M, Arizona, Lipscomb, Tulane, Eastern Illinois, Army, San Jose State, Maine, UNC-Wilmington, Oklahoma State*, Ball State, Auburn*, Wright State, Central Connecticut, and Nicholls State: Pack your shit up, and go home, you are ELIMINATED from the NCAA College Baseball Championship.
Now, why do two of those teams have stars by their name? Because not only did they lose two straight... they did so as the host team! #13 Auburn suffered the indignity of losing to Penn in their opener before getting sent home by Southern Miss. #11 Oklahoma State one-upped them by losing to ORAL ROBERTS... then getting Malcolm X curbstomped by DALLAS BAPTIST 18-4.
-With the jobbers out of the way, this next batch of teams comes up on the chopping block. One win is better than zero, but the end result is the same.
So... Maryland, UConn, Santa Clara, Clemson*, Sam Houston, Vanderbilt*, Oklahoma, Cal State Fullerton, UL-Lafayette, Rider, Washington, West Virginia, Samford, North Carolina, NC State, and Troy, you have been ELIMINATED. Kindly pack your stuff up and return home... unless you have a star by your name, as you're already home. And possibly being lynched by angry fans.
Once more, we get to point and laugh at a pair of teams. #4 Clemson, #6 Vanderbilt, you had visions of hosting Super Regionals dancing in your heads. And then you got concussed by Charlotte and Xavier after understandable losses to Tennessee (now officially Clemson's daddy) and Oregon. Go stand in the LOL corner and think about what you've done.
-Despite Mother Nature taking a piss on several regionals, even more teams have met their 2023 season's final resting place in the regional finals. Considering it takes two wins just to get that far, there's little dishonor in bowing out here. Usually. For this step, we'll give the losers a little extra blurb to honor their achievements this season. And there's still quite a few regionals wrapping up, so some TBDs are sprinkled in, they'll get their own post in the responses once they get their final marching orders.
-George Mason: If only you could have avoided the sudden juggernaut that is #1 Wake Forest. Outscored 27-1 in your two losses to them... but at least you're not Maryland who gave up three TDs in their one brush with death. -TBD 2: Florida survives becoming the top LOL by beating Texas Tech in the return match, today's the rubber decider between the two teams. -TBD 3: TCU holds advantage after beating #3 Arkansas 20-5, the Razorbacks now need to dig deep and win two straight to advance. -Charlotte: A very honorable departure, any time we get to point and laugh at Clemson is a WIN for everyone. Godspeed you crazy bastards, as Tennessee was just better than you. -TBD 5: All the rain in Baton Rouge, we're just getting to the regional final now with #5 LSU holding advantage over Oregon State. Personally: DON'T BLOW IT. I WILL BE MERCILESS IF YOU DO. -Xavier: Another honorable departure as you took #6 Vanderbilt down in dramatic fashion, then just had nothing left in the tank for Oregon. So be it, head home with your heads held high. -East Carolina: Meh. Being down to #7 Virginia was a death sentence, one you couldn't even delay. Oh well. -TBD 8: Another rubber match as #8 Stanford avenges an earlier loss to Texas A&M, forcing the decider back to today. My apologies to the unfortunately named Ty Uber, as your teammates picked up your starting DUD (4 runs, 5 hits, 1 out) with interest. -#9 Miami: LOL. You needed two straight to advance, and started the first game well with a 3-0 lead over Texas. And then the third inning happened. Nine runs given up, and your season is OVER. Go into the LOL Corner for your sins, and tell Clemson and Vanderbilt to stop crying for fuck's sake. -TBD 10: #10 Coastal Carolina beats Duke in their first meeting, forcing a decider this afternoon. Would be one hell of a recovery from losing your opener to winning your home regional, just one win to go. As for Duke... nobody will feel bad for you if you lose. -Dallas Baptist: Helping humiliate #11 Oklahoma State is good, and helping Oral Roberts get the "regional sweep" is even funnier. Have an honorable trip home, don't feel too bad. -TBD 12: #12 Kentucky blows Indiana out 16-6... unfortunately it still only counts as one win, offsetting your earlier 5-3 loss to them. One more game for the regional title... -TBD 13: The two teams that combined to let us all laugh at #13 Auburn once more face off in a decider, Southern Miss with momentum after beating Penn 11-2 yesterday to avoid elimination. -Iowa: Eh, #14 Indiana State had your number both times. At least you did the same to North Carolina, I guess? -Campbell: Avenging your loss to NC State will have to suffice, #15 South Carolina had no interest in losing at home. At least you scored seven? -Boston College: #16 Alabama wasn't losing in Tuscaloosa, carry on. If only Nicholls State had won that opener...

-From 64 teams, we're down to 23. Seven more will be sent home... hopefully all today, if Mother Nature can get her irregular bladder under control. Sixteen will move, or have moved, one step closer to Omaha; all that stands between them and the College World Series in Omaha is a simple best of three this coming weekend.
Just remember the most important rule of the college baseball playoffs, same as every other playoff: DON'T! GET! ELIMINATED! Or do, we all need teams to point and laugh at.

2023.06.05 14:28 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Truck Hannah

The entirety of Harry "Truck" Hannah's major league career came with the New York Yankees -- all three years of it. But if you include his participation in the minors, he had a long career, beginning in 1909 with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League and ending in 1940 with the Memphis Chickasaws in the Southern Association. He is one of only a handful of players to have a hit in five different decades!
Of all the forgotten Yankee with memorable nicknames -- No Neck, Stanky the Yankee, Sailor Bob, Spud, Slow Joe, The Mummy, Birdie, Bump, and Grandma Johnny -- there's something to be said about the sublime elegance of a big, brawny catcher nicknamed Truck.
James Harrison Hannah Jr. was born 134 years ago today, on June 5, 1889, in what was then the Dakota Territory. (It would become the state of North Dakota about five months later.) By age 2, the family had moved to Seattle, Washington.
As a kid, he was called Harry, but by the time he was playing baseball, he was universally known as Truck. There are several stories as to how he got the nickname. Some said it had to do with his imposing size -- he stood 6'1" and weighed a solid 190 pounds -- and others because of the way he could block the plate as easily as a truck could block a street. Other sources say the nickname wasn't comparing him to a motor vehicle but to a horse, or rather a truck horse, as horses that pulled heavy wagons were called at the time. His daughter, Helen, said he got the nickname simply because he was "big and slow."
Another explanation, a little less colorful, was that Hannah paid the bills in the off-season by working as a truck driver!
Hall of Fame Umpire Billy Evans said Hannah was adept at the catcher's trick of distracting the batter with a steady stream of banter while behind the plate:
"Truck Hannah always has been an object of interest to me when catching. Aside from always doing a pretty good job receiving, he never failed to have a line of conversation that would make a bigger hit on the vaudeville circuit than some of the stuff used by some monologue artists. Hannah keeps up a continual chatter from the time the game starts. Of course, his conversation is largely directed at the batter, in the hope that his line of talk will take the mind of the batter from his work, the making of base hits. He seeks to keep the batter from concentrating, and from the many strikes slipped over by the New York pitchers, I would say there was merit in his system. Hannah's conversation is never objectionable. He usually has the batter laughing at some of his talk, rather than sore."
But Hannah used more than just banter to distract batters. As the pitch was being delivered, he would sometimes spit tobacco juice onto a player's shoes, toss pebbles onto the plate, or throw dirt at their hands on the bat!
Hannah got his start in professional baseball as a 20-year-old third baseman with the Tacoma Tigers in the Northwestern League. When the team needed an emergency catcher, Hannah was put behind the plate and stuck there for the rest of his career. Over the next five years he played for five different teams in four different leagues, until in 1914 finally catching on with the Sacramento Wolves in the Pacific Coast League. The PCL at the time was considered by some to be a third major league, or at least the minor league closest to major league competition, and Hannah was regarded as one of the best catchers in the league. He drew interest from several major league teams, including the Tigers, Phillies, and Browns. But it was the Yankees who finally acquired him, paying $4,000 to acquire his rights after he hit .292 in 569 at-bats in 1917.
Truck pulled into the Polo Grounds -- not Yankee Stadium, which wouldn't be built until 1923 -- as the foundation was being laid for a dynasty. Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast Huston purchased the Yankees in 1915 and immediately set about reversing the fortunes of what had been for years one of the worst-run teams in the American League. The Yankees, as they became known in 1913, had only winning season in the last 10 years.
The new owners set about making changes, acquiring a number of valuable players: Wally Pipp, Home Run Baker, Ping Bodie, Aaron Ward, Urban Shocker, and previously forgotten Yankee Bob Shawkey.
After the 1917 season they made the biggest change of all, firing well-liked manager Bill Donovan and replacing him with former St. Louis Cardinals manager Miller Huggins, who over the next 11 years would lead the Yankees to six pennants and three World Series.
Huggins made another move, acquiring from the St. Louis Browns future Hall of Fame pitcher "Gettysburg Eddie" Plank and veteran second baseman Del Pratt. The latter would be a good player for the Yankees, hitting .295/.348/.394 (106 OPS+) over the next three seasons, but the 42-year-old Plank refused to report and retired instead. In return, the Yankees shipped out five players... including starting catcher Les Nunamaker, who had been with the Yankees for four seasons.
And so, needing a catcher to replace Nunamaker, the Yankees paid the Salt Lake City Bees $4,000 for Hannah. He was expected to battle 22-year-old Muddy Ruel to be the backup to the 25-year-old Roxy Walters, who had been Nunamaker's understudy since September 1915, but Ruel would be drafted into the U.S. Army and Walters broke his finger in an exhibition game 10 days before Opening Day. By the time Walters was ready to play again, Hannah was hitting .288/.432/.356 and had thrown out 19 out of 34 basestealers; over the rest of the season, he would maintain that pace to lead the league in CS% (55%) as well as in double plays as a catcher (16). His batting average would fade dramatically, however, dropping all the way to .220 by the end of the season, but he was still contributing with a .361 OBP in 312 plate appearances. Walters's bat never got started at all, and hitting just .199/.239/.236 in 205 plate appearances.
Technically a major league rookie when he joined the team, the 29-year-old Hannah was treated like a veteran from his four seasons in the well-respected Pacific Coast League. In addition, he was -- literally as well as figuratively, at 6'1" -- one of the few players on the team who could see eye-to-eye with the 6'2" Babe Ruth when he was acquired prior to the 1920 season. When Ruth got into squabbles with diminutive manager Miller Huggins, it was often Hannah's duty to keep the peace.
Yankee shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh, the Yankee captain from 1914 to 1921, described one such incident to long-time Yankee PR man Marty Appel in 1974:
"Once we were leaving Boston after a tough loss, and Babe was drunk, and he said he was gonna throw Huggins off the train! He was heading for his drawing room. On the way he stopped in the men’s room and punched this huge mirror. It fell into a million pieces. Me and Ernie Shore and Truck Hannah pulled him down to the ground and sat on him until he passed out. Truck — a big guy — puts him over his shoulder and moves him to the next car."
At the end of the season, the Yankees were happy enough with Hannah that they traded Roxy Walters to the Red Sox. For the next two years, the catching duties were almost evenly split between Hannah and Ruel, who was back from the Army with the end of World War I.
The "Muddy-Truck" tandem was colorfully named but disappointing, with Ruel hitting .255/.325/.306 (71 OPS+) in 560 PA and Hannah .243/.313/.317 (70 OPS+) in 553 PA. Catcher in those days was very much a defense-first position, and both had good gloves, but the Yankees (even with the newly acquired Babe Ruth having an 11.7 bWAR season) finished three games out of 1st in 1920.
Ruppert and Huston asked Huggins what the team needed to win, and his answer: a catcher.
At the end of the season, the Yankees sent Hannah back to the Pacific Coast League, and traded Ruel to the Red Sox for previously forgotten Yankee Wally Schang, the first in the long line of great Yankee catchers. In his five years with the Yankees, the switch-hitting Schang hit .297/.390/.406 (105 OPS+), and in the 1923 World Series -- the first of 27 won by the Yankees -- Schang played every inning of every game, went 7-for-22 (.318) with a double and three runs scored, and allowed just one stolen base.
Hannah would stay in the Pacific Coast League for the next 22 years as a player, coach, and manager. He had a great year with the Vernon Tigers in 1923, hitting .346 with 23 doubles and 6 home runs in 370 plate appearances. His final plate appearance came on May 19, 1940, when he was managing the Memphis Chicks. Two weeks shy of his 51st birthday, with both his catchers injured, Hannah caught both ends of a doubleheader and went 1-for-6.
Hannah retired from baseball two years later after his St. Paul Saints lost 15 games in a row -- 11 of them by one run! He said he couldn't sleep anymore, replaying every loss in his head over and over, second-guessing every decision he made as manager.
He retired to his ranch in Southern California, but remained active enough in the regional baseball scene that when the Los Angeles Angels played their first major league game in 1961, Hannah was selected to catch the ceremonial first pitch.
Truck Hannah died on April 27, 1982, five weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. His wife, Helen, died in October, a month before what would have been their 70th wedding anniversary.
Keep On Truckin':
Near the end of his career, Truck Hannah was interviewed about the rigors of being a catcher. He said during his 30 years in baseball he'd broken every finger on his right hand at least twice. "What the hell, it's all part of the game," he said. "It sure was fun while it lasted. Even with busted hands and fingers and everything else, I wouldn't have missed it for the world."

2023.06.05 14:25 Riksor What race will y'all choose?

Let's assume that Avowed will have playable races like other Pillars of Eternity games, and that the races will be the same available as in other games that take place in Eora. These would be:
Humans: "Humans (commonly called "folk") are the most common race in the Dyrwood, the Aedyr Empire, Old Vailia, and the Vailian Republics. Though not as large as the towering aumaua, humans are known for their strength and willpower"
Aumaua, the tall, webby-handed coastal people: "The mighty Aumaua are the largest of the kith races and are commonly found in or near oceans. Though not truly aquatic, they have an affinity for water and many of their civilizations, such as Rauatai, are based on naval dominance. They are known for their unparalleled strength."
Dwarves, mighty explorers: "By virtue of land covered and number of colonies settled, dwarves are the most well-traveled race in the world. They are commonly found in the Dyrwood, the Vailian Republics, and almost any colonized land. Dwarves are known for their great strength and tenacity."
Elves, the secluded and intelligent ones: "Elves are the dominant race in Eir Glanfath and The White that Wends and are extremely common in the Dyrwood and Aedyr. Elves are known for their speed and intelligence as well as a commonly isolationist nature."
Orlan, the large-eared, tiny wild people: "Orlans are the smallest of the kith races, though many cultures don't consider them to be civilized at all. Also notable for their large ears, two-toned skin, and hirsute bodies, Orlans are commonly found in Eir Glanfath, the Ixamitl Plains, and parts of the Dyrwood. They are known for their mental intensity and quickness."
Godlike, those born with divine characteristics which may include elemental aspects, animal creatures, etc: "The godlike are children of the kith ("civilized" races) who have been blessed with physical aspects associated with the gods (though some do not consider it a blessing). These aspects may take many forms and often come with mystical powers. Aberrant head shapes are typical, and godlike are unable to wear protective headgear as it is near-impossible to find anything that fits. Because of their unusual nature and their inability to reproduce, godlike are often viewed with fear and wonder."

2023.06.05 13:42 Pleasant-Water-4544 A reply to u/AcronymTheSlayer 's post about "being done with this country"

Message to mods -> This post might not seem directly related to JEE/NEET but it is about the desire many JEENEETards have to leave India. So although it not overtly related to JEE or NEET but it concerns its aspirants the most. Therefore, I beseech you not to delete this post. Thank you.
I am replying to u/AcronymTheSlayer's post (https://www.reddit.com/JEENEETards/comments/13xmhgu/i_am_done_with_this_country_it_has_failed_its/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) with another post as I feel the issue that I will be talking about is not only relevant to her post but also to everyone who feels incredibly dejected after seeing the state of affairs in India to the extent that they wish to leave ASAP.
There were other points raised in OP's post about which I might not talk about, it would be safe to assume that I agree with those points and empathize with the OP. Especially about being harassed and all the women who have suffered worse tragedies, I stand in solidarity with you all.
There are 3 parts to this post:
1) Context 2) Why you should not leave India 3) Appalling the state of women in India
PART I: Context
You might feel that this part is irrelevant to the topic, but bear with me, it will all make sense in Part II.
To understand what I am going to talk about you need to know about my worldview first. So here it is -> Humans as a species need to progress. They need to become capable of peaceful co-existence and become resilient to anything that may threaten their survival. Presently, we have divided ourselves into nations and each one of them has issues of their own. Why did we create nation-states? Why can't we live under a one-world confederacy? I think the answer to this lies in psychology and sociology. Whatever the case may be, humanity in its present state cannot exist peacefully and it cannot be united under a one-world confederacy. To fix this we need "complete humans", who have assimilated the past civilizations of the world, who have studied themself, their country, and the world, and who have discovered the laws of progress, and tendencies of both civilization and nations to settle future goals and progress of mankind. Then we need to create a unique model for living which combines total freedom with self-discipline and with living responsibly with nature. This alone can provide salvation to humanity. Now who shall do this? I believe that at first this ideal must be realized through a nation which is India. Why India? There are reasons for this but to maintain the relevance of this post I will not disclose it here. If you want to know, I might tell you in DM.
For me, there are 2 Indias. The 1st one has existed since the time humanity stepped foot on this sub-continent. Even when we were divided politically, a string had always held us together. That string is the longing and pursuit to unlock all possibilities of human life and to reach their maximum potential. That string unites us even today although the majority of us aren't even consciously focused on such pursuit. The 2nd India dates back to 1947, which was born not as a result of revolution but compromise. Politicians back then compromised their ideals and thus were born the Dominion of India (eventually a "republic"). The foundations of 2nd India are rotten to the core as it was born out of a compromise and transfer of power between the British to another set of crooks.
How do we realize the ideal of creating a new model for living in India? I believe that can be achieved by establishing many completely self-sufficient villages all over India. These villages will have hospitals with doctors from various disciplines including Allopathy, Ayurveda, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, etc. They would treat each patient with the best option or combination specific to that case while tracking the progress of the patient within a fully scientific, evidence-based approach. All this would be affordable. These villages would be self-sufficient in terms of energy, food, and water. Villages like these should be built on the principle co-existence of technology with self-reliance and nature. The citizens must be allowed total freedom provided they have trained themselves in self-discipline and living responsibly with nature. I have much more to say about what I have thought about villages like these but I do not want to digress from the main issue.
To build these villages we need self-disciplined, extremely capable, and wise individuals. At large, the people of India will keep sleeping as they've been for a REALLY long period but it is these individuals who can be the change. I say this because of how India and the world are moving, a catharsis (mother of all disasters) is bound to overtake us. Society will be forced to restructure itself. Everything will have to be built from scratch. At a time like these, the unique model for a living I have talked about will find expression.
The reality is that the people of India are sleeping. They do not want to suffer for the sake of changing the country for good, that might include you too. If you do not want to wait for catharsis for India to change, the first step is for you to have total and absolute self-discipline and have an unbreakable spirit, like a revolutionary. The 2nd step is to have the ability to live on the bare minimum like a sadhu. You must be able to live frugally so the government cannot break you. Only when you have changed and conquered yourself, comes step 3 which is to starve your oppressors. You have the right of self-defense as these people have initiated thousands of projects in your name by printing notes, borrowing, and indebting you or the next generations forever. Then they loot, extract, and siphon off from the same projects. Find your own ways to starve the Indian government. The best option would be Civil Disobedience. It was conceptualized by David Thoreau in 1849 much before Mr. Gandhi lead a compromised version of Civil Disobedience. Stop paying taxes, do not cooperate with the government, boycott ALL politicians and all use all the other weapons that Civil Disobedience has to offer, and do not stop until all of our demands are fulfilled which includes things like a reformed incorruptible police force based on Chanakya's principles, a complete overhaul of the judicial system and the penal code. We need Civil Disobedience because even if we elect our independent candidates, they will not be able to do anything unless they "compromise" with the politicians. The bureaucrats can smell a real reformer from miles and can silence them easily. Even those of you who talk about changing the country are not free from addictions and this is your greatest weakness. This is what the government will use against you if you try to change the country. People are addicted to their smartphones, unlimited 5G internet, non-veg, AC, drugs, tobacco, etc and if you directly skip to step 3 the government will break you easily using your weakness.
Part II: Why you should not leave India
From an individualistic point of view, it seems completely logical to leave India for greener pastures. My argument is that there is a world beyond individuality and it is unintellectual to assume that one can live a complete life relying on individuality alone. There must be a sense of purpose and service to the community in everyone's life. As you've already read, at least in my value system the "1st India" is most important. Therefore, it is obvious that people leaving this country will cause harm to my vision of India.
There are 3 main points that I would like to present:
1) As I have already mentioned that the "new model for living" would be realized in India. Eventually for it to spread to the whole world, it would require more work in the model itself but I say can that the "West" (or the Anglo-sphere) would never accept such a model for living. Why? Because they are imperialists. The era of imperialism has not ended. The Anglo-sphere is more diabolical and fascist than Nazi Germany itself. They claim to be the champions of the free market but try to control economies in every step. They claim to be the land of the free and home of the brave but interfere in their "free" citizen's life every second. India is bound to be in a conflict with the Anglo-sphere in the long term. As such, people going from India to the Anglo-sphere will obviously help them and therefore harm the interests of India and humanity at large. No, I am not saying the usual BS about NRIs that people usually say, what I am saying is different.
2) If you chose to stay in India, I can guarantee you two things: Pain and Death. I have already discussed how if you try to change the things here you will face backlash from the government and pockets of the society. Completing the 3 steps I mentioned earlier is bound to bring pain and death your way. If you stay here and silently work for the 1st India, your suffering and death will have meaning. Your blood and sweat will be what moves the Ashok Chakra for the salvation of India and therefore mankind. The fate of humanity depends on India and the fate of India depends on us. I believe that sincerely.
3) If you leave, you will be spared from all the things which make you want to leave India. What about that poor girl from Kasdol, Chhattisgarh who will still bear the constant risk of getting raped, humiliated, harassed? She can not leave India even if she wants to. I can not even dream of leaving my sister in this state. I have taken the pledge that "All Indians are my brothers and sisters" and I have not forgotten it. So I am silently working in the shadows for my brothers and sisters and I shall do what is required even to my peril.
You might ask, Am I bounded by your vision? Don't I have the right to enjoy better standards of living? Don't I have the right to live a life free from harassment? and my answer is yes you do! But instead of going to the West for all this and working against the interests of humanity (I've already explained how), you should claim your rights here even if it takes your life because this is YOUR land. Never give up what is yours.
Part III: Appalling the state of Women in India
Now I come specifically to OP's post. She mentioned a dreadful incident that happened to her in a line. I would like to share a part of a speech made by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
"The spiritual quest of Bengal has always been voiced through the cult of the Mother. Be it God or be it motherland—whatever we have worshipped we have done so in the image of the Mother. But alas! Today the menfolk of Bengal have become so impotent and cowardly that they are incapable of preventing the molestation of women that is going on in the districts of Bengal."
This one is from one of his biographies
Speaking at a public meeting on crime against women, at the Albert Hall in Calcutta on 19 August 1938, Subhas made a few strong comments. He observed that the people of India had in their midst a larger number of men with a greater degree of bestiality in their character than in any other country. He expressed surprise at the fact that Indians still claimed to be spiritual people. Reserving seats for women on public transport would be quite unnecessary ‘if we were a people who really respected womanhood’. ‘He exhorted our young men to see to it that all women could move about freely and to teach a lesson on the spot to anyone who dared to annoy or molest any woman by look, word or deed’, reported The Modern Review. Subhas strongly recommended opening gymnasiums in all villages and towns to teach girls and women the art of self-defense.
I was surprised to know that things like these have been going on in India since the 20th century and perhaps even before!
How to stop this? This is a serious issue. We have not been able to solve problems for more than 100 years. There are 2 parts to this problem, society, and government.
Using all that I have mentioned above, a reformed judiciary and penal code, an incorruptible police force, and mandatory quality and REAL education for ALL will be all that is necessary from the government's side to solve this issue.
The 1st and 2nd steps that I mentioned earlier, will solve the issue from society's end to a great extent if implemented by the masses. This change cannot come from the grassroots as big changes happen from the top-down. Why? It is because the masses are gullible and they can be controlled easily. If we reform our billionaires, intelligentsia, politicians, celebrities, influencers, etc then the middle and lower class will follow. Ultimately, for a few years, the death penalty for the smallest offense must be promulgated to establish the rule of law and to protect vulnerable people. This might sound excessive but the people who harass women might not change suddenly if become government implemented actual reforms, or if people are being self-reliant and self-disciplined. They will have to be either scared away or eliminated through a short "reign of lawful terror" until the results of all that I have said start becoming visible. Ultimately, due to the upper class changing, giving TRUE education to all, a reformed judiciary, and an incorruptible police force this problem will be solved.
In order to make all this happen, you must stay in India and work for the larger interests of humanity (around 8 Billion people). The solution is not to flee to the West. It can never be.
Whatever I have written here is easier said than done, but it is what needs to be done.

2023.06.05 13:22 IncidentPossible8239 TIFU by not checking my fluids

Dear fellow Redditors, gather around as I recount the tale of my own undoing, a tale of negligence and the catastrophic consequences that followed. Buckle up, because this TIFU is going to take you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
It all began on an ordinary day, with the sun casting its warm glow upon the world. Blissfully unaware of the storm that lay ahead, I prepared for a journey with my girlfriend, looking forward to a carefree adventure. Little did I know that my complacency would soon lead to a series of events that would rock my world to its core.
As we embarked on our trip, the car purred with its usual grace, lulling us into a false sense of security. The engine hummed, and the wheels glided smoothly along the pavement, masking the impending disaster that lurked beneath the surface. Little did I know that the tranquil facade would soon be shattered.
Suddenly, without warning, the steering wheel locked up, wrenching control from my hands. Panic surged through my veins as I grappled with the unresponsive wheel, desperately trying to steer clear of danger. But my efforts were in vain. The car veered off the road, hurtling toward an inevitable collision. Time seemed to slow down as the impact reverberated through the air, and the sickening crunch of metal against concrete filled my ears.
As the dust settled and the wreckage lay before me, a sense of dread washed over me like a tidal wave. Not only had I wrecked my car, but the consequences reached far beyond the twisted metal and shattered glass. You see, fate had a cruel sense of timing. I had an important meeting at work later that day, one that could potentially shape my professional future. With my car now a mangled mess, the chances of making it to the meeting on time were slim at best. The weight of potential job loss hung heavily over me, casting a dark shadow on my already shattered world.
But as the universe unfolded its cruel plan, another revelation struck me. While waiting for the tow truck to arrive, my girlfriend called to inform me that she had been picked up by her "friend" Fred, who happened to pass by. However, as the conversation progressed, a nagging suspicion crept into my consciousness. There was an underlying unease in her voice, a hint of secrecy that sent alarm bells ringing in my mind.
Driven by an insatiable need to uncover the truth, I pressed her for answers. And then, like a dagger through my heart, the truth came crashing down upon me – my girlfriend had been cheating on me with Fred. In that moment, amidst the wreckage of my car and the wreckage of my trust, my world shattered into a million irreparable pieces.
As I reflect upon this series of unfortunate events, regret and despair fill my being. Neglecting to check the power steering fluid had set off a chain reaction that not only led to the destruction of my car but also put my job and my relationship in jeopardy.
So, dear Redditors, let this be a cautionary tale etched in your minds. Never underestimate the importance of even the smallest tasks. The illusion of security can lull us into complacency, but disaster often strikes when we least expect it. Cherish what truly matters and never take anything or anyone for granted. And remember, the consequences of our actions, no matter how seemingly insignificant, can reverberate far beyond our expectations.
TL;DR: TIFU by neglecting to check my power steering fluid, which caused the steering wheel to lock up and led to a car wreck. As I awaited the tow truck, I received a shocking call from my girlfriend, revealing her infidelity with Fred, the "friend" who had conveniently picked her up. The wreckage extended beyond my car, jeopardizing my job and shattering my trust. Let this be a reminder to prioritize even the smallest tasks and appreciate the people and moments that truly matter in our lives.

2023.06.05 12:52 shinyskittyy Have you ever been given a piece of advice that actually helped your BDD?

I'm at a total loss here because nothing anyone can think to do or say seems to help at all. While I understand that since body dysmorphia is a terribly misunderstood and under-researched condition people who don't suffer from it themselves don't often have much of value to offer on the subject, but... There must be SOMETHING out there beyond the most cliched truisms and generic inspirational proverbs humanly possible right? Seems like it all just more or less boils down to "love yourself, be confident, stop comparing yourself to others, appreciate your hobbies/talents/positive traits instead of focusing on looks" etc etc like bruh don't you think I would if I could????? Feels like the BDD equivalent to telling a depressed person to just be happy and try yoga or something lmfao. I'm sure they mean well and everything but goddamn I can only hear so much of the same old crap before I find myself resenting what feels for all the world like blissful ignorance at best.
Can even one of you honestly say you've ever received a life tip or piece of advice that actually, genuinely helped to change your way of thinking? Even just the smallest little stepping stone towards managing symptoms or making life easier? If so I'd really love to hear it, because lately every single day of my continued existence feels like an impossible task... Let's just say I'm desperate. Thanks in advance.

2023.06.05 12:28 Rajuri_Steels Why Sulfur is Undesirable in Steel?

Steel is one of the world’s most used materials, made from a combination of iron and carbon, and various other elements. From the smallest construction to the most complex structures, it is everywhere surrounding and impacting us daily.
As it plays such a vital role, knowledge about this material is pretty uncommon.
What is Steel?
Steel has played a vital role in the development of modern civilization and is not to be confused with iron. In the simplest form, Steel is iron ore alloyed with less than 2% carbon.
However, many other elements like Chromium, Aluminum, Manganese, Iron, Phosphorus, Sulfur, Copper, Nickel, etc. can also be added to produce several grades of steel alloys with different properties.
Steel has many advantages in the construction industry, which include many parameters like tensile strength, compressive strength, yield strength, ultimate strength, fatigue strength, elongation, ductility, low weight, hardness, resistance to corrosion, resistance to fire, etc.
Depending on the many parameters steel can be classified into the following types:
  1. Stainless steel
  2. Carbon steel
  3. Tool steel
  4. Alloy steel
Effect of Sulfur Content on Steel
Sulfur(s), an element is always present in small amounts in steel, and its removal during steelmaking is a tedious and challenging method.
Sulfur(s), whose atomic number is 16 and atomic weight is 32.066, is usually an undesirable impurity in the steel rather than an alloying element. During the solidification process, it can react with iron(Fe) to form iron sulfide (FeS) at the grain boundaries. Formation of FeS can develop areas of weakness in the material, which are more sensitive to cracking & can lead to the building of hot cracks in the steel.
Sulfur(s) enhances machinability but decreases transverse ductility and notched impact toughness, and has a nominal effect on longitudinal mechanical properties.
The Sulfur(s) content of steel in amounts exceeding 0.05%, tends to cause brittleness and reduce weldability. Alloying additions of Sulfur(s) in amounts from 0.10 to 0.30% will tend to enhance the machinability of the steel. Such alloys are referred to as 'resulphurized' or 'free-machining'. Free-machining alloys are not intended for use where welding is needed.
Steel grades have varying sulfur content, however, in most cases, the high Sulfur(s)content in steel creates a negative impact on properties, which include:
  1. Formation of crack because of sulfides which leads to fatigue failure
  2. Embrittlement of steel and reduction of weldability, especially when sulfur content is more than 0.05%
  3. Reduction of intergranular strength and the melting point of the steel.
These are the reason why "desulphurization" technologies are increasingly exercised to deliver high-quality steel components for industries. On the other hand, when the steel is too low in sulfur, it can create difficulties in weldability. Reduced Sulfur(s) can lead to a negative impact on the fluid flow and lead to a wide weld pool with shallow penetration.
If the steel has a high Sulfur(s) but is low in Manganese (Mn), it produces the most prominent segregation of all steel accompanying components. It leads to red or hot shortness. In the absence of Manganese (Mn), Sulfur(s) readily incorporates with iron (Fe) to form low-melting iron sulfide(FeS). In regular steels, even in re-sulphurized, Mn contents are high sufficiently (Mn/S = 8 minimum) to prevent extreme hot shortness during rolling or forging. Hence, Sulfur(s) occurs in the microstructure as MnS inclusions.
When it comes to sulfide inclusions in steel, fatigue failure is a common failure, and is controlled by crack nucleation and growth.
The inclusion of sulfide (FeS) reduces weldability and corrosion resistance. While reheating, the presence of Sulfur(s) may also lead to tears and cracks. When Sulfur(s) content increases in the steel the weldability decreases and that's the reason the high Sulfur(s) content steel has poor welding properties.

2023.06.05 12:15 Cookiecolour First hesitant post as a Ruby

First hesitant post as a Ruby
Hello there! I have discovered this group through the Kibbe group, which system broke my head a bit as it is all about external attributes and ideas of flattering - almost triggering to me despite of years of body neutrality affirmations. The biggest appeal with Rita's system is for me its subjectivity and focus on inner worlds instead of fulfilling other's expectations or style rules.
I felt pulled, drawn, no, enraptured by the Left Down, because my biggest concern about clothing and style are Sensory - touch, feel, attached feelings, as an AuDHD person (albeit for now self-diagnosed, but with family members with diagnoses etc), texture is tremendously important for me. If the touch is icky, if it's not comfy, if I have sensory issues with an item, it's my biggest no. So talk about coming from within!
I am a non-conformist who loves art, pretty things and nature. Before I get dressed, I ask myself how I feel and that changes daily. Of course I want to be a bit appropriate too, as a stay at home mama and carer for my biggest kid, I am always trying to balance feeling held by my clothes and quirky/cool and being me without drawing all the attention.
My biggest struggle stylewise is to combine my idea of edgy, arty, comfy, down styles with my very traditionally feminine physique. I have worn vintage styles in the last decade but have felt like I was in disguise a lot - like cosplaying being a woman, often uncomfortable with the attention, as I tried to emulate others. I am giving myself permission lately to play and wear what I want and what feels good and not what others find flattering on me (people often have strong opinions about me without knowing me, I learnt in my 40 years). Liberating would be an understatement! But I feel like I have just started to play, to give myself permission to feel good instead of (just) looking good.
Okay, so having written this, I realize it might come across as very self-contained (which is my specialty 🥲). So I will share a few outfits of the last week. I am starting nursery with my smallest, so these were my choices. I learnt that I am tonal warm type this year, which was such a revelation as I love warm colours to feel held. I would love to chat with some of you or hear your impressions! I love nerding out!
The first outfit was my favourite because it was sensory heaven with a full linen outfit and comforting colours. The last two outfits were outfits I tried. The cream dress is new secondhand and I think it might be too left up for me - a style I love but one that feels over-the-top for me.

2023.06.05 11:29 absentmindedShaun Why

I’d like to message one of you guys who wishes me ill but I believe it’s hard to point out what is without sounding cray-cray, so I will direct them here.
I am having difficulties because of these emotions that I don’t know how to cater openly. It’s hard and I’m in a rough spot. When you put those prejudice and ill wishes into the ether, you’re simply providing reasons to quit you and submit to the trials.
My situation isn’t getting better. I get that you’re tremendously burdened out as well. It’s not my intention that the most recent event panned out that way and I’ve navigated it poorly and communicated the parts that should have been expressed calmly. I was in a bad place and couldn’t talk to anyone.
A lot of these happened because of a big misunderstanding. I believe I was able to grow some balls and tell them the real score but I was struggling a lot because of the fact that I couldn’t control what happened after. The person who I was hoping to hear the most gave up on me. I thought my efforts would be appreciated or they’d be patient enough with me. But at end of the day they were the ones who shut their blinds and painted the walls with their judgment.
It was hard to process altogether and I felt deeply inadequate. My words, my means, my train of thought, my ability to stay positive.
They chose to cut themselves out of the picture because they believe it was leading into hopelessness. I also know there was exaggeration on my part. This, with my limited ability to cope and heal, affected the way I treated the other and in an attempt to exist harmoniously, I ended up affecting them in the same magnitude of hurt I was dealing with. It’s not an excuse either and I know I wasn’t ushering kindness to them even on the smallest things like doing chores and missing appointments. I’ve learned that I tend to micromanage the other and when the expectations weren’t met, I turned around and said things like I give up or this is not working for me which was partly true, the latter parts are discouraging and frustrating and there are no double rainbows and festive banquets to look forward to.
The worst part was that, every time my actions caused our endless fights, we’d sit down and try to talk through them all properly, address every little detail about the said shallow moments and try to come up with resolutions except that I couldn’t keep up. Eventually, it broke them and exhausted their ability to understand.
The cycle would repeat manically and the next thing they knew, it was me who’s pull the trigger on them. That’s why when they’ve declared their repulsion it felt like I am the world’s most stupid person. I was insensitive and mean towards them.
I admit that my efforts to change aren’t enough and I am at fault regardless. When They would accommodate my sleeplessness and demands for space, they would offer some help and things that might help. But theycouldn’t let me go, they’d rather stay and they’ve expressed their sadness even more. Although I was forcing them to leave me alone and I cried numerous times because I was losing myself and couldn’t be let go.
I thought by being honest some things would stride smoothly. However, this was not the case. I was impatient and mad that I cannot even have my own space to do the things I love. This was easier to express but impossible to pull off.
I talked to my sibling about it. It clarified a bunch of things and they offered some clarity on my struggles and overbearing misery. I was able to calm down for a moment but it was mostly too late as I muddied the pavement already where I could have made the situation better.
It is definitely my fault why I’m crumbling like this and as much as I’f like to say the same thing and give up, I can’t. It would only signal the weakest parts of me to obliterate further. I hope you’ll understand and I hope you will make room for a chance to talk.
It’s too much to ask I know, I’d give it a day to rest and take my mind away, be kinder to myself. I’d also prefer to leave you alone and respect your boundaries right now or maybe forever.
I don’t know why I am still curious about what you think of me. I don’t know why I still look for you. I don’t know why I’m waiting and I don’t know why I still care. The questions have been answered actually, but here I am hiding myself and avoiding responsibilities for the fucked up mess I caused.
I’m sorry for this, I really am. I was only hoping to try my best and right my wrongs. Anyway, I hope you’re alright and smiling.

2023.06.05 10:22 abc-animal514 What kind of bear is Paddington?

When it comes to the beloved character Paddington Bear, some find themselves wondering about his true identity as a bear. So what species is he? There are eight species of bear in the world:
Brown Bear (Ursus arctos):
Black Bear (Ursus americanus):
Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus):
Moon Bear (Ursus thibetanus):
Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus): Distribution:
Panda Bear (Ailuropoda melanoleuca):
Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus):
Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus):
So, what type of bear is Paddington? Geographically, the most accurate bear would be the Spectacled Bear, as it inhabits Peru, which is where Paddington is from. Many sources label him as a spectacled bear. However, in terms of appearance, Paddington has brown fur, resembling a brown bear. His diet mainly consists of fruit, which is common among black and spectacled bears. Additionally, Paddington possesses excellent climbing skills like black bears. Despite these similarities, there are several distinct traits that differentiate this bear species, bringing them closer to humans. They appear to share the same lifespan and aging rate as humans, as evidenced by Lucy and Pastuzo, who were already fully mature bears when discovered by Clyde in Peru and remained alive even forty years later. Most bears have a lifespan of less than 40 years, reaching full size at around 8 years. These bears walk upright and possess thumbs, allowing them to grasp objects and create human-like inventions and architecture. Furthermore, they have the remarkable ability to speak human languages, primarily due to learning from the explorer. It could be that Paddington is a unique species of his own. He often mentions being "a very rare bear" with few others like him remaining. The reasons for his species being endangered are unclear, but it could be attributed to changing climates, habitat destruction, or other factors. In the movie, there is a scene in the museum where Millicent shows Paddington a plaque reading "Ursus marmaladus," implying that he is part of the Ursus genus and more closely related to brown, black, polar, and moon bears. The term "marmaladus" refers to his species' love for marmalade preserves. Either way, he's smarter than the average bear, and his species' intelligence could be the most important factor in how they remained hidden for so long. In the movies, he's accepted into society as a normal person, even being sent to a human prison. So is he really that rare and unusual?
But all this being said, this is all fictional, so maybe I shouldn’t be over analyzing.

2023.06.05 10:20 Fijoza How do u fight procrastinating ?

Hello,
Just joined this redddit cause i came to a conclusion recently, to live ur best life u have to consume and for that u need to be productive, when u start to have a good life u want to remain there what push u to fix urself at a high producitvity.
The thing is i don't lack in ideas, i have plenty of business plans but i can't respect the organization i anticipate to make them real. My biggest problem is, when i see something which is big to do, and far to finish, and until it finish there is no reward, my mind do everything in his possibility to avoid me getting to work. I can plan something for decades to come but starting them no.
I m not at my top if life actually, but if my dreams i rule the world... Each time i tell fucking myself i should start doing the smallest things before having plans for mankind.
So my question is where do u guys find the motivation in long term ? When u know what u do will have consequences in years, not sure about the success, go through lot of steps... etc
What about sport and alimentaion ? Does they really play a key role for the people who went from no sport at all and random alimentation to something well searched and organized ?
I would like to have this life of the those people on social media that shows a healthy life style, with a beautiful appartement, good income, having experiences in life like trips etc, the worst comes when i see that some people gets educated since start to search for this type of life, like this is the best, u need to do that and that to get that etc, u see of what kind of people i m talking ?
I mean this is an example between a lot but the point is that i m getting motivated after, and really fast i lose this motivation really fast.
I also have troubles to focus of my different objectives have too much...
For now this what i planned to do :
- Reminder lock screen : I have a bloc notes where there is like 300 statements i do when i procrastinate, want to summarize them into short sentences i put on my background photo of my phone lock screen...
- Using Trello : I put projets i want to do for my freelance work, with schedules and everything, and i add what i get if i do it.
Please share and comment as much as u like i accept everything don't hesitate !

Here's a song I wrote, self-taught, I would like pointers (either for my performance or the song itself)
I apologize for any mistakes or camera re-focusing in the video I had a limited amount of time to record this while my parents were out.
[Unimportant Explanation] If the song sounds familiar, it's because I maybe subconsciously half-plagiarized part of World's Smallest Violin and didn't know until like a week ago. I "heard" the first part of what I'm playing in the video in a dream so as soon as I woke up I tried to figure it out on the piano.
[Critiquing] The song doesn't have a name, but it sounds kinda ragtimey I think. I would like to add more complex chords to the song but everything I tried didn't really sound right.

2023.06.05 09:00 mamallama12 Do you ever look at your Vine life and laugh?

Only seven months in and everywhere I look anymore, it's Vine items all the way down.
It started last night when I was sitting at my desk and decided to break out my "world's smallest working vacuum cleaner" to vacuum in the crevices around my monitor and in my keyboard drawer. Wanting to do more, I broke out an air blower and blew a bunch of dust out of my keyboard, then sat back and rested my arms on my padded armrest covers.
Tonight, I ate my dinner on a bagasse segmented paper plate with my corn starch fork and knife. Then I decided to review a few items and remembered that I've been wearing one diabetic sock all day to try it out, and it was at that point that I just had to laugh.
