2023.06.06 22:12 Hashirammed Fox or ESPN need to make a show with Shannon and JJ Reddick
Both personalities transition to TV as well as any athlete could hope for, JJ is a big NFL fan, Shannon is a big NBA fan, and both have in depth knowledge on the sports they played. I don’t know if they’ll ever do this because networks seem to want at least one journalist on these sports debate shows but this would make for the most entertaining and informative sports show on TV IMO.

2023.06.06 21:58 ZealousidealCycle301 Ranking every world in Kingdom Hearts 2
I’d like this post to be a general discussion of the worlds in KH2. Let me know if you agree or disagree with my ranking, and feel free to share your own ranking.
15th: Atlantica
Atlantica takes the unfortunate last place on my list, but it's not without its charms. In a surprising move, the developers scrapped the original Atlantica and turned it into a rhythm game. Surprisingly, this change actually makes the world more enjoyable. The rhythm gameplay adds a cute and fun touch to Atlantica's story, making it a pleasant addition to the game. While it may not have the depth or exploration of other worlds, it offers a unique twist and provides a lighthearted break from the main adventure. That being said, Swim and Play has to be the worst song I’ve heard I'm sorry.
14th: Disney Castle
Disney Castle secures the 14th spot on my ranking, offering a short but sweet story arc and a cool design. However, it doesn't go beyond these surface-level elements. The world lacks the depth and substance found in other worlds, serving more as a brief interlude than a fully fleshed-out experience. While it's always nice to explore a familiar location from the Disney universe, Disney Castle falls short when it comes to providing a truly engaging and memorable gameplay experience.
13th: 100 Acre Wood
100 Acre Wood comes in at number 13, and it's a unique world that offers a departure from the typical Kingdom Hearts formula. It improves upon the original 100 Acre Wood by incorporating a cool little side story and enjoyable minigames. However, it feels more like an arcade or collection of minigames rather than a fully realized world. While the minigames are fun diversions, they don't offer the same level of depth and exploration as other worlds in the game. Nevertheless, if you're looking for a lighthearted and whimsical break from the main storyline, 100 Acre Wood provides an entertaining diversion.
12th: Space Paranoids
Space Paranoids secures the 12th spot on I list with its fun gameplay, cool design, and engaging storyline. However, it falls short in terms of character development. The characters in this world come across as rather bland, lacking the depth and complexity found in other worlds. Additionally, the final boss battle in Space Paranoids could benefit from a reduction in health points, as it tends to drag on longer than necessary. Despite these flaws, the world still offers an enjoyable experience overall, blending futuristic aesthetics with engaging gameplay mechanics.
11th: Twilight Town
Twilight Town earns the 11th spot on my ranking, and while some may criticize its slow introduction, I believe it offers a compelling and enjoyable experience. While it may feel a bit slow at times, Twilight Town features a fun storyline and an intriguing setting. The first part may be a bit confusing, but it leads to a brilliant ending that sets the stage for the second part, which is truly remarkable. While it may not have the same grandeur as other worlds, Twilight Town manages to captivate players with its unique atmosphere and engaging narrative.
10th: Port Royal
As a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, Port Royal left me slightly disappointed. While it offers a cool and unique world that stands out from the others, it falls short in terms of story and character development. The characters in Port Royal are nothing like their movie counterparts, which can be a letdown for fans. Nevertheless, the world still captures the essence of a pirate adventure and provides an enjoyable experience. The first part offers a decent adaptation, while the second part can feel a bit tedious. Despite its shortcomings, Port Royal manages to deliver a fun and immersive pirate-themed world that could have benefited from a bit more depth.
9th: Beast's Castle
Beast's Castle takes the 9th spot on my list with its absolutely stunning design and exploration opportunities. The world offers a captivating story and well-developed characters that stay true to the Beauty and the Beast theme. However, it falls short in certain aspects, such as the absence of Gaston and a lot of aspects of its movie, who would have added an extra layer of depth and excitement. Despite this missed opportunity, Beast's Castle remains a visually impressive and engaging world, showcasing the magic and wonder of the Disney universe.
8th: Land of Dragons
The Land of Dragons secures the 8th spot on my ranking, offering a solid world with an enjoyable storyline. While it may not stand out as much as other worlds, it still provides a satisfying experience overall. The world design is well-crafted, immersing players in a vibrant and dynamic environment. However, when compared to the other worlds in the game, it falls slightly short in terms of depth and overall impact. Nevertheless, the Land of Dragons manages to deliver a worthwhile adventure that contributes to the overall Kingdom Hearts II experience.
7th: Olympus Coliseum
Olympus Coliseum makes an impressive upgrade from its predecessor, offering a great open world and an engaging story. It serves as a decent sequel to the original Hercules world and features the introduction of Auron, one of the coolest Final Fantasy inclusions in the series. The world provides a satisfying blend of intense combat and thrilling challenges. While it may not reach the top tier of my ranking, Olympus Coliseum still stands as a solid world that fans of the series will enjoy.
6th: Pride Land
The Pride Land secures the 6th spot on my list with its great storytelling and near-perfect world design. The world effectively develops the characters from the movie, immersing players in an engaging narrative. The boss battles and overall world design contribute to a memorable and immersive experience. However, the unique gameplay mechanics, while ambitious and fitting for the world, don't resonate with everyone, leading me to prefer other worlds slightly more. Nevertheless, the Pride Land delivers a compelling and well-crafted adventure that fans of the Lion King and Kingdom Hearts alike will appreciate.
5th: Agrabah
Agrabah lands in the 5th position on my ranking, and once again, it proves to be a beloved world. Essentially a refined version of Agrabah from Kingdom Hearts I, this world introduces a fun magic carpet mechanic and improves the boss battles. It successfully captures the essence of the Aladdin story while adding its own twists and turns. Overall, Agrabah offers a great blend of exploration, storytelling, and satisfying gameplay, making it a standout world in Kingdom Hearts II.
4th: Halloween Town
Halloween Town secures the 4th spot on my list, delivering another brilliant upgrade from its original iteration. While the story may not reach the same heights, the world design is undeniably fun and engaging. From the festive atmosphere to the well-crafted boss battles, Halloween Town offers a captivating experience. It showcases the creativity and imagination of the Kingdom Hearts series, providing players with an amazing world that should not be overlooked. I’ll even go in record and say that the present Minigame is actually kind of fun.
3rd: Timeless River
Timeless River captures the 3rd spot on my ranking as one of the most unique and enjoyable gaming experiences in Kingdom Hearts II. With its nostalgic black-and-white design, the world stands out from the rest, creating a distinctive and visually stunning atmosphere. The combat mechanics are excellent, and the small but fun story adds an extra layer of enjoyment. Timeless River successfully achieves what 100 Acre Wood attempted to do, but with even greater success. It offers a refreshing break from the main storyline, providing players with a truly memorable and delightful world.
2nd: Radiant Garden
Radiant Garden secures the 2nd position on my list, standing as a remarkable upgrade from Hollow Bastion. This world has it all - from the breathtaking Cavern to the epic 1000 Heartless Battle. The inclusion of Final Fantasy characters and the intricate story arcs elevate Radiant Garden to the peak of Kingdom Hearts II. Every aspect of this world is noteworthy, showcasing the developers' attention to detail and dedication to creating an immersive and compelling experience. Radiant Garden truly shines as a must-play world for fans of the series.
1st: The World That Never Was
Taking the crown as the top world in Kingdom Hearts II, The World That Never Was delivers an outstanding finale to the game. The world's design is simply breathtaking, capturing a sense of awe and mystery. The flawless boss battles, emotional storytelling, and great ending make it a standout world that brings everything together with precision and elegance. The World That Never Was serves as a testament to the beauty and complexity of Kingdom Hearts II, leaving players with a truly memorable and impactful conclusion to the game.

2023.06.06 21:29 Foxxfirefly [F4M] Red Dead Redemption Returns!
Hello Roleplayers!
I've felt the itch to write something a little less on the modern side and rather based in the good old west, inspired by the read dead redemption universe! I would like to have this all be about being a little possessive in a relationship, a fling, whatever. Make it all about the passion, the struggle, the craving of romance and need to be with each other all while there is the ever-so-present need to fight for what truly is good, or perhaps, just for that fat cash. Showdowns, robbery, heists, being on the run, maybe a little touch of fantasy and myth in here to make it spicy and interesting.
This could go any way. I have plenty of ideas I would love to share and discuss but the main plot or premise is described below:
I would like this to be based in the region / map of the RDR2 world we can create and shift as we like, so no 100% accuracy is expected. I'd like both our characters to be familiar with the culture and vocabulary of course, maybe have a runaway outlaw involved as one of them, perhaps the other even a figure of the law.
I am perfectly fine if you want to play as canon character! (Bonus points of you write Arthur Morgan for me ❤️)
I don't want either of them to be alienated by slang or quirks that may end up creating any unnecessary friction. I do like a good little difference between characters and make it as natural as possible, since no one could ever really get along 100% from the start, but I want both characters to have a mutual understanding of the time and habits.
A possible plot point could be that they are getting together as outlaws, maybe coming from rivaling gangs, maybe it could be an enemies to lovers situation, or perhaps one of the characters is rather on the "good" side, perhaps even on the side of law to create some tension there.
Events that can take place naturally are great droughts, the outburst of illness, the general fight for survival in difficult times and conspiracy, all of this combined in a longterm roleplay! This can involve characters of all origin, rich and poor, I am very open and like different dynamics!
There are a few things I want to make clear here though! I am looking for this to be a detailed, extensive and hopefully longterm roleplay! That being said I prefer third-person writing, no self-inserts and longer posts. I am talking 2+ paragraphs that consist of more than three sentences per paragraph. Also, I only write on discord, no exceptions, sorry (:
I like my roleplay partners to communicate a lot, in the sense of saying if anything is the matter, criticism and input is much welcome as well as constructive conversations. Further details to be discussed separately!
The following will be an example of my own writing in detail and literacy, something I would expect at least somewhat matched by my partner hopefully. This sample is unrelated to this posts idea and not an open starter! :
The Moon stood high that night upon the treeline, mist rising from the dampness that had been gathering in grass and bushes keeping the surroundings shrouded in mystery as it seemed. In the depths of the forest was a light however, red and smoking, a campfire of someone who had settled there, and that someone was currently being hunted. Deeper in the undergrowth and bushes surrounding the little campsite crouched a woman watching the group of three that occupied the camp it seemed, and also, the surroundings. However, this was no ordinary sight as the occupants of the camp were crimilas on the loose hunted by the law and with personal interest on them, which brought Ilyana there.
She was a sword for hire, eager to complete her job and wanting to be certain this was done correctly so she could gather her pay. It was the least she could do, as much as she needed to, since there was a certain reputation she had to keep up, and also, she needed to keep herself fed and also alive. Thus, she would need to be careful with her approach. The long, slender blade she owned was still sheathed along her side, and she was near crawling forward on all four, her joints bending and used to this, given that she was well aware of who she really was. What she did not know however, was that there was another hunter present that night, that there was someone else stalking the campsite.
Seated along the fire were three man, all brutes with muscles, their skin scarred and dirty, their hands busy tearing apart venison and refilling mugs of whatever they had carried along. They were deep enough in the woods to remain hidden and yet, they had left tracks that were easily found by those that knew where and how to look. Ilyana could not hear what they spoke of, but she knew if she wanted this to work out well, she needed to be careful, and keep her senses sharp.

2023.06.06 21:07 Competitive_Cut1628 Never been in a romantic relationship, why? (Inspired by a recent post about doomed relationships)
| Heterosexual cis-gendered woman here. I've never felt ready to be honest. There's not a person in my past who I would have liked to be in a relationship with. I do desire a monogamous marriage primarily for the purpose of companionship. But at the moment, I've got a lot of personal stuff that I'm working through that has to do with self worth and developing personal authority. I love learning from depth psychology material and I think that life is about exploring one's psyche, the collective and their interactions. One of my concerns is being with someone who is not able/willing to connect with me in this area of life. It is a major part of the person I've been and am. The possibility of living life with this unshared part of me is painful to me. Thoughts, insights based on my chart? submitted by Competitive_Cut1628 to AskAstrologers [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 20:59 Mr__Weasels i told chatgpt to make a house episode, this is the result
(ps i had some extra instructions about the topic of the episode)
Title: House MD: Rap Therapy
INT. PRINCETON-PLAINSBOUROUGH HOSPITAL - DIAGNOSTIC DEPARTMENT - DAY
Dr. Gregory House, a brilliant but unconventional diagnostician, sits at his desk, browsing through music videos on his computer. Foreman, House's colleague and close friend, enters the room.
FOREMAN House, we've got three new cases waiting. We need to start working on them.
HOUSE (reluctantly) Cases can wait, Foreman. I have something far more important to discuss with you.
Foreman raises an eyebrow, intrigued yet skeptical.
FOREMAN What's so important that it can't wait?
House turns his computer screen towards Foreman, showing a rap music video.
HOUSE I've decided to become a rapper, and I need you to join me.
Foreman's expression shifts from curiosity to confusion.
FOREMAN You want me to become a rapper? Why?
HOUSE (smirking) Because you're black, and in my racist mind, that automatically makes you a rapper.
Foreman looks at House with a mixture of anger and disappointment.
FOREMAN House, that's ridiculous. Being black doesn't define me, and it certainly doesn't make me a rapper. I'm a doctor, just like you.
House leans back in his chair, feigning innocence.
HOUSE Come on, Foreman. Don't be so serious all the time. It's just a bit of fun. Think of all the joy we'll bring to the hospital with our sick rhymes.
Foreman remains firm, refusing to engage in House's antics.
FOREMAN Sorry, House. I'm not interested. I've got real work to do.
House's smile fades slightly, but he quickly regains his composure.
HOUSE Fine, be that way. But mark my words, Foreman, when I hit the top of the charts, you'll be begging to join me.
Foreman shakes his head and exits the room, leaving House alone with his grandiose dreams of rap stardom.
INT. HOUSE'S OFFICE - LATER
Dr. James Wilson, House's best friend and confidant, enters the office, carrying a cup of coffee. He notices House's preoccupied expression.
WILSON (slightly amused) What's got you so engrossed, House? Is it a new medical breakthrough?
House snaps out of his reverie and looks at Wilson.
HOUSE Better than a medical breakthrough, my friend. I'm going to be the next big rap sensation.
Wilson chuckles, intrigued by House's unusual enthusiasm.
WILSON I've never seen you this excited about anything other than Vicodin. Are you sure you're okay?
HOUSE Vicodin is old news, Wilson. Rap is my new high. It's time for the world to see my genius beyond medicine.
Wilson pats House on the back, genuinely happy to see him energized by something other than drugs.
WILSON Well, House, if rap is what makes you happy, then I'm all for it. Just remember, you're still a doctor, and the hospital needs you.
House grins mischievously.
HOUSE Don't worry, Wilson. The world may not be ready for the rap genius of Dr. House, but I'll always be there to save lives.
They share a genuine moment of camaraderie before House's mind wanders back to his rap fantasies.
FADE OUT.

2023.06.06 20:03 dmalone1991 Which Type of Players Have a Higher Rate of Success
Do you believe that players who display a good feel for the game but maybe aren’t super athletic have a higher hit rate than players who have tremendous athleticism but not necessarily a good feel for the game.
Like Anthony Black is often evaluated as having a good feel for the game but, maybe I’m wrong on this, Amen Thompson is viewed as much more athletic but doesn’t have a great feel for the game.
This is the first time I’ve ever really gotten into in-depth scouting for the NBA so I’m curious what more experienced minds have found?

2023.06.06 19:39 DaInkHashira [GM4GM or A4A] Double the Doubling Canon Options!
Getting in here before the AI options take over, nothing but a humble (but experienced!) flesh and blood roleplayer keen on weaving tales and worlds around players, and hopefully finding those willing to do the same.
Have you ever wanted to explore and play around in a canon or fantasy world like it was one great big text based game? To start your own grand adventure in it or just take a quaint slice of day to day life out of it? I am here and happy to oblige. Drop in your own OC, or takeover and pilot a canon fave, chart whatever course you want and I will sculpt a reactive adventure accordingly.
I am a flexible GM, I can take over all the world prep work and you just need to show up with a character, or you can give me story beats, characters or more that you would like to show up and I will make it work. This includes the option of making slightly or wildly AU different versions of canon worlds as well. Think: AU Sci-Fi Demon Slayer with the known characters IN SPACE (As an example).
You want me to throw together some kind of crossover Smash Brothers-esque mix of verses, that's possible too! Or if you're just looking for something vague or hyper specific in the way of a OC world I can give that a try as well. I welcome all characters and rpers of proper age (18+), of all backgrounds, and in all pairings if you want some plots going that way.
In return I am looking for other eager GMs to do the same and write a world around a character of mine. So pretty much your typical doubling up of roleplays writ large. I know GMing is a big ask and task however and fully understand if some might be less certain on it. If you don't want to GM I still extend a similar and more standard doubling offer to any with a strong story yearning.
I lean towards and best know canon verses in the way of video games, comics, manga and anime, but will hear out any and many most obscure verses and franchises on your mind. I'm a passionate sort who knows many but am always keen to try out new ones. The only one I will say no to ahead of time is the MCU. Sorry Marvel fans but I've done many and more enough of that to do anything new there anytime soon. Spider-Man remains the big exception, so any yearning for something Spider-Man focused may be in luck.
Reach out privately and PLEASE include the verses you are looking for and are open to playing with as a player or GM. Any other faves like most desired plot ideas or characters would be helpful too.

2023.06.06 18:33 loungefly02 Commercial Drone Flying TAC Chart Help
| I just passed my commercial license exam and I feel confident about many things, but one thing I'm still unsure of are the blue flight path lines in the TAC chart. Turns out I live pretty much right underneath one of these paths. The course I took kinda glossed over them-they were mentioned but weren't really explained what they are, what the numbers represent or the height at which these military flight routes are/if I can fly below them. Can anyone please explain these lines more in depth and what I need to look out for or whether I'm allowed to fly in or around those lines? I'd like to be able to practice my drone in my backyard, but don't want to interfere with anything. I picked a random spot in America for the picture. I do not live here. https://preview.redd.it/uxlz3wx8df4b1.png?width=1572&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9135cbfd01c242e2a093c5408fdca1e1461a818 submitted by loungefly02 to drones [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 18:15 FyrestarOmega Throwback - Ben Myers' Defense Opening Statement
Thought a refresher of the opening statement presented by Myers related the case he intends to present might be helpful, since membership has grown from about two dozen people on that day until now. Using Sky News because older live Chester Standard articles are not loading correctly, but the Chester Standard link is at the bottom.
This Sky News link would also take you to the prosecution opening statements if you continue to go backwards
https://news.sky.com/story/lucy-letby-trial-live-updates-prosecution-defence-cases-outlined-nurse-12716378 Defence begins by saying 'all we have so far is a theory of guilt based firmly on coincidence'
Ben Myers KC has begun his opening statement, speaking in defence of Lucy Letby.
He begins by acknowledging to the jury how saddening the allegations are.
"It is difficult to think of allegations that could be more upsetting than these and it's difficult to think of allegations that strike harder at our desire to protect than these allegations," he says.
He says "the sympathy of everyone will rightly be with the families of the children involved in this case" and the defence is not here to "diminish" that.
He tells the jury it would be "easy for emotion to take the place of evidence" but says that would be "staggeringly unfair" to the defendant.
"There is a real danger that people will simply accept the prosecution theory of guilt," he tells the court.
"And that is all that we have so far. A theory of guilt, based firmly on coincidence."
Mr Myers tells the court blame should not be "heaped on that woman", while pointing at Letby, and says others may have made mistakes.
"Sometimes what happened was a genuine deterioration in the health of one or other of these children," he says.
'You won't get the answers simply looking at the woman in the dock'
Ben Myers tells the jury he is "barely touching" on the detail involved in this case today.
He says the defence's opening statement will not be as detailed as the four-day opening the prosecution has put forward. More detail will come later in the trial.
He says he will touch on "failings at the Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal unit that have nothing to do with Lucy Letby".
Letby was a "dedicated nurse", Mr Myers says, who "trained hard" to look after the babies at the unit and "in no way did she want to hurt them".
Letby "loved her job... cared deeply about the babies she looked after, and cared deeply for their families", the court is told.
"You won't get the answers to this case simply by looking at the woman in the dock now," he says.
"This is where she is six years after starting to face allegations like this. As you can imagine, that must be utterly gruelling for anyone."
Mr Myers says the jury "might want to keep the effect of that in mind" when they examine evidence in the case.
"Anybody who is approaching this as if it is any kind of done deal has got it very badly wrong," the court is told.
In the dock, Letby continues staring straight ahead.
Letby wrote 'I'll never have children or marry' in 'confession' note
The court is once again shown what - the prosecution says - was Letby's confession note.
But Mr Myers says these are the writings of an "anguished woman in despair" who is realising the enormity of what is facing her.
A line on the note, which is being shown to the court, says Letby has an "overwhelming fear... I'll never have children or marry... I will never know what it's like to have a family... despair."
He says the note does not "accurately reflect" what has happened, but was written by Letby while upset, who "poured her feelings onto paper as a way of coping".
'No evidence' these attacks took place, defence says
Defence KC Ben Myers is now addressing why a number of medical notes were found in Lucy Letby's possession following a search of her house.
He says she did not have them for a "sinister motive" but she was a person who "scribbled things down" and a person who "hangs onto bits of paper".
He then turns to the "coincidence" involved in the case.
"We say there is an assumption that someone is doing deliberate harm," he tells the court.
"There is no evidence of the actual events being alleged."
From using syringes to injecting air, tampering with bags of fluid or in some other way poisoning, physically assaulting children, or smothering them - the defence says there is no evidence that these attacks took place.
He returns to the case of Child E, whose mother - the prosecution said - walked in on Letby attacking her child.
Mr Myers says the evidence will not bear this out.
"The assumption of harm" and the assumption Letby is behind the harm has made the allegations "self-fulfilling".
Defence questions standard of care at Countess of Chester Hospital
Defence KC Ben Myers is now telling the jury there were shortcomings at the Countess of Chester Hospital that cannot be attributed to Letby.
"There is a question of whether this hospital should have been looking after all these children, and whether it did so to the required standard," My Myers tells the court.
"For a nurse in the neonatal unit, standing there when a child is unwell is unremarkable," he says.
"Her presence alone is now treated as sinister."
What the defence is asking the jury to consider
The defence KC tells the jury the evidence "may look daunting" to start with, but he says he will be asking them to consider five issues.
These are...
1. The birth condition of the baby.
2. Whether there were any problems in the health and care of the child leading up to the event we are considering. He says: "Things with babies like this can be unexpected... but we also say when you get down to the detail of the evidence it isn't always that clear and it isn't always unexpected."
3. Whether the prosecution expert medical evidence proves there was deliberate harm done.
4. Whether Letby was present at the time and what the evidence can establish about what she was doing if she was there.
5. If there were failings in care with the baby we are looking at, or at the unit as a whole.
'We are dealing with babies who are clinically fragile'
The defence says there were other events and "collapses" which took place when Lucy Letby was not present.
The court has been shown again a chart - first presented by the prosecution - which shows Lucy Letby was present at all 22 incidents involving the 17 babies mentioned in the indictment.
Defence KC Ben Myers says the chart does not show the "shortcomings in care, which may be the fault of others", nor does it show any other incidents which took place when Letby was not there.
"When we strip away all the surrounding detail, messages, Facebook searches, even amateur psychology, the case will come down to the medical evidence," he tells the jury.
The cause of death or deterioration in an infant is "not always clear" and there can be a "number of possibilities", Mr Myers says.
"Generally, we are dealing with babies who are clinically fragile, and their condition can change very swiftly."
Experts 'influenced by confirmation bias', says defence
Ben Myers KC is now returning to the five points that he is asking the jury to consider (see 12.59pm post) when deciding if Letby is guilty or not.
He asks the jury to "remember how quickly problems can develop" with neonatal children.
He tells the jury to listen out for any evidence that shows the unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital was "understaffed and overstretched".
He says experts can be influenced by "an overarching assumption that what has happened is a result of deliberate harm".
"The fact they are an expert does not mean this cannot happen," he says.
"Where there is no clear explanation for what has happened - and that can sometimes happen in medicine - there is a danger of an expert being drawn into an explanation of evidence that is influenced by the prosecution's theory."
He tells the jury this is called "confirmation bias".
'Doctors don't always have the answers'
The experts that will be called in the trial have "met as a group and considered their opinions jointly", defence lawyer Ben Myers KC tells the court.
He then tells the jury that the burden is not on the defendant to provide an explanation of the events that unfolded.
"Doctors don't always have the answers and nor do medical experts," he says.
"The fact that Ms Letby can't explain a particular event... does not mean she is responsible for it."
Letby remains "adamant" that she has done nothing to harm any of the children mentioned in the indictment.
Mr Myers is now turning to each of the children in turn.
Child A died as a result of 'suboptimal care' and 'lack of fluids', says defence
The defence accepts there is a "possibility" that Child A died as the result of an air embolus (an injection of air).
But Ben Myers KC says the defence does not accept on this count that it was the cause of death.
He says the care given to Child A was "suboptimal" and the infant collapsed either as a result of a "lack of fluids" or a result of the "various lines that had been put into him" and the potential they interfered with his heart rate.
The air found inside Child A can happen "post mortem".
'Nothing' to support injection of air as jury told to 'look at the practicalities'
Child B, Ben Myers KC tells the court, had been in a "precarious position from birth" and was born "blue and floppy".
He says there is "nothing" to support an injection of air, or Child B's airway being blocked.
"She had other episodes where she struggled to breathe after the time on the indictment here," he says.
Next, he moves to Child C. He tells the jury although he is moving through the cases quickly, he does not mean this to be "heavy-handed" or cause offence to the families involved but that he wants to give an overview of the defence's argument.
"We accept in this case," he says, it is a "theoretical possibility" that Child C was injected with air.
He tells the jury to "look at the practicalities of that".
Child C was born "very premature": "As a starting point, sadly, a baby like that will be vulnerable to a range of complications."
This includes being more vulnerable to infection, and Child C should have been at a more specialist unit, Mr Myers says
Absence of evidence 'does not convert it into evidence of guilt'
Child D experienced delays to her medical care and was "never able to breath unaided", the jury is told.
"She was not put on antibiotics when she should have been," Ben Myers KC says.
He says the evidence shows infection was more likely than an injection of air.
Moving to Child E - who the prosecution said was attacked in front of his own mother - Mr Myers says there was no evidence of an air injection and "no evidence of direct trauma".
"There is no clear explanation in his case of what happened," he tells the jury but says that is not a good enough reason to assume Letby was responsible.
He then moves to count six and count 15, which involved the attempted murders of Child F and Child L. The prosecution alleges they were both poisoned with insulin.
He says the absence of evidence "does not convert it into evidence of guilt".
The IV bag, which was allegedly spiked with insulin, was changed when Letby was not on shift. The sample that was analysed was taken from this bag, which Letby had not come into contact with, Mr Myers says.
"The prosecution are fixed to the theory that all is due to Lucy Letby," he says.
Defence continues to blame care at Countess of Chester Hospital
Letby faces three charges of the attempted murder of Child G. On 6 September 2015, the prosecution claims she was fed an excessive amount of milk and vomited out of her cot and onto a nearby chair.
Ben Myers KC, for the defence, says doctors say Child G was "born on the margins of viability".
"She was a high-risk baby with a history of abdominal distension and vomiting", the court hears.
The defence also says Child G had exhibited signs of infection.
Next, he says the case of Child H is "complicated by suboptimal treatment" that she received at the beginning of her life. Letby faces two charges of attempted murder, which took place on consecutive nights.
Mr Myers says this is "another example of suboptimal care" at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
"What happened at the hospital had nothing to do with Lucy Letby. Despite all of that, she was there," he says.
Child I - who it is claimed Letby tried to kill four times before "succeeding" - experienced "a series of ongoing clinical problems that may well have been inevitable given her extreme prematurity".
'The Countess of Chester Hospital was well out of its depth'
Defence lawyer Ben Myers KC says "the Countess of Chester Hospital was well out of its depth" when it came to treating Child J, who Letby is accused of murdering.
He said the hospital delivered "inadequate care" to the child, who was born with a perforated and necrotic bowel.
Nothing, Mr Myers says, can link Child J's collapse to anything Letby did.
In the case of Child K, Letby is accused of doing nothing to help as the infant's oxygen levels dropped - a consultant who looked at the child found her breathing tube was dislodged.
"Ms Letby does not agree she has done that, nor was she seen to do that," Mr Myers tells the jury.
He disputes claims from the prosecution that the newborn was sedated and couldn't move.
"We say she wasn't and she could," he says.
He says the child "shouldn't have been" at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Screaming child 'more likely due to hunger' than air injection, according to the defence
Moving on to Child L and Child M, twin boys who survived.
Defence lawyer Ben Myers KC says "blame is being put on Ms Letby because there is no obvious alternative".
He continues: "The mere fact she is there when something happens is almost being used as an explanation for it happening."
In the case of Child N - for whom Letby faces three counts of attempted murder - he says the fact the child screamed for 30 minutes was more likely due to "hunger" than being injected with air.
One expert, the prosecution said previously, said he had never seen a neonate scream for such a long time.
Mr Myers says Child N should also not have been at the hospital.
'Signs of infection' in one triplet, and air found in another a 'natural occurrence'
There were "signs of infection" in one of the two triplets who died at the Countess of Chester Hospital, the defence has said.
Child O was found with "severe liver damage", and both he and his brother, Child P, died within the first week of their lives.
Ben Myers KC, representing Letby, says the liver damage in Child O can be attributed to CPR.
Meanwhile, any air that was identified in Child P post-mortem is a "natural occurrence" that happens after death.
"The build-up of air found in the child can be attributed to the air flowing into the baby for respiratory support," the jury is told.
"Once he collapsed it isn't clear why he didn't respond to resuscitation but that doesn't go so far as to show this was inflicted harm."
He addresses the final case, that of Child Q and says a "poorly functioning bowel is probably what led to him being unwell and vomiting".
'Where was she? What was she doing?'
After running through each individual case, Ben Myers KC, for the defence, turns to "Ms Letby and what her presence means at that time".
"It's a simple question, where was she, what was she doing?" he asks the jury.
But he tells them it is "important not to guess" because the evidence "cannot pinpoint" exactly where she was at any given moment.
"She can hardly be expected to remember," he says.
"We say there are many occasions when Lucy Letby was not there."
Some events took place when Letby wasn't there, but he says the prosecution has been selective with the events it has chosen.
Even when Letby was present "that doesn't get close to proving what the prosecution allege". He says it would be unfair to "treat presence as mere evidence of guilt".
Letby a 'young nurse who built her life around the neonatal unit'
Ben Myers KC describes Letby as a young nurse with no immediate family commitment and someone who "had built her life around the neonatal unit" and thus was willing to be called in at short notice.
"Someone in that position, in that role... is more likely to be there when deterioration happens, but that doesn't mean she made it happen," he says.
Letby will not always be able to recall specific details about children or events.
"In that regard, she is like any other witness in this case," Mr Myers says.
Regarding the medical treatment given at the neonatal unit, he says: "Nobody is going to expect perfection day in day out."
He says there were "problems with the way this unit performed that had nothing to do with Lucy Letby".
Hospital was 'downgraded': 'To blame Letby is unfair and inaccurate' - defence
Ben Myers KC tells the jury that there are other examples of "suboptimal treatment" within the Countess of Chester Hospital that are "legitimate targets of criticism".
The prosecution has "consistently" highlighted how some babies recovered once removed from Letby's orbit.
Yet the defence says: "Their improvement coincided with removal from the Countess of Chester Hospital which could not deliver, we say, on some occasions the care that was necessary or the expertise for some of the children it looked after."
Mr Myers says that blaming Letby for this is "unfair and inaccurate".
The Countess of Chester had a "lack of technical medical skills", accepted babies with too high a level of care need, and on occasion was "too busy".
He points to the fact that the hospital was "downgraded" by a clinical watchdog, and redesignated to a level one. He says the hospital "could not provide care at the level it did".
Letby 'became a target of blame' amid pressure to find explanation for high infant mortality rate
In the case of Child K, a consultant became concerned about the correlation between the presence of Letby and the rise in sudden collapses.
But Ben Myers KC says this became "self-serving and self-fulfilling" and there was evidence for his concern.
He says she "became a target of blame and wrongly so".
"If others have failed to provide appropriate care or the unit is too busy or not appropriately staff you may agree that creates a situation in which things can go wrong... mistakes made, records not kept," he tells the jury.
He says there was "pressure to find an explanation" behind the spike in infant deaths at the unit.
Defence concludes its opening statement
Amid a final call for the jury to consider the evidence, Ben Myers KC concludes his opening statement by saying: "This whole case is a complex case, it is not straightforward.
"And in that dock is a young woman who says this is not her fault."

2023.06.06 17:43 indyman_123 How 'Malazan' is "sold" to a brand new reader (like me) around the internet... the factors that led me to ultimately start the journey... and some important advice for the first-timers before going in.
Firstly, I would like to thank you all for voting ,commenting, and sharing your opinions on my
previous post. That has really helped me in not only going ahead and trying to attempt and do the whole quick review / recap thing, but also to go ahead with a lot of renewed curiosity, interest, and energy into the series (and also hopefully try and NOT go into the "burnout" mode in the whole process of doing so).
Anyways, but before starting the above mentioned thing though, I would like to address a couple of things based off my personal overall experiences on certain stuff... way before I went ahead and picked up GOTM.
Please note that a few things have already been briefly mentioned in my previous posts and comments, but I wanted to elaborate on certain aspects of it, and even to provide some context to some of the things. How MBOTF / Malazan is sold to a brand new reader like me around the internet - These are some of the main and common things that I found out while searching for what the series was all about. Some resources describe the series in a more positive way, whereas some in a more less than positive way (negative is probably not the right word here I feel, cuz the resources are telling you why you should pick it up in the first place, rather than not to) -
- The series is very long, in fact one of the longest out there wrt fantasy / word count, and that it's still not complete. MBOTF is done (with 10 BIG books) by SE, but the 'Malazan World' as a whole has a lot more to offer, including NOTME by ICE (again completed; with 6 books), two prequels series, one sequel series, and a bunch of novellas. And there are more books on the way! So spending the time and energy for this is the reader's personal choice.
- It is also probably the most complex / challenging series out there. So start at your own risk. Especially if you're new to fantasy or haven't read too much stuff before. Also, you will not understand everything, SE doesn't spoon feed the readers in any way. So if you're into it, then only go for it.
- Not for everyone's taste too. That it tackles certain aspects in a much "rougher way" (violence, sexual assault, etc.), and that the author doesn't pull any punches in doing so. As long as one is able to manage their emotions wrt this, it will be OK. Otherwise, not for the faint hearted so as to speak.
- The writing / prose is pretty good, but again, not for everyone. It can get very confusing and difficult at times. Can also get too much philosophical at times, and as the series progresses, some of the books tend to drag on a bit. And the major underlying themes concerned are compassion, pain, grief, suffering, etc.
- The characters, although some very well written, do not quite come out as the best in the genre (writing wise). There are too many characters' POV to follow, and that can be challenging to say the least.
- It is more of a military fantasy in a way, involving multiple battle sequences, strategies, etc. and if you like wars, armies, magic, assassins, thieves, fantasy creatures, amazing places, some cool OP characters, even gods themselves getting involved in a much bigger game, you should definitely go for it.
- The worldbuilding is top class though, and the journey throughout is well worth all your efforts in the end. Many even stating that this right here is the most epic and best fantasy series they have ever read!
- Lastly, that GOTM is THE hardest of the bunch wrt everything. The writing, plot wise, character wise, understanding wise, etc. I f you can manage to push through it, you'll be able to get on pretty well. Also, to judge if the series is made for you or not, go through AT LEAST the first three books of MBOTF. If then you're into it, it's definitely for you. If not, you should probably consider dropping it.
Now, this is NOT to point fingers or to highlight anybody / any online resource, or community. This is just what I as a new reader found out and was informed wrt the series in general. There were some things to put me off personally like the complexity, length, etc. But there was plenty that I thought was right down my alley, and I would enjoy it very much (like deadly big hounds, lots of dragons, dinosaurs with blade hands, a short, plump dude who's funny and dangerous at the same time, some super cool powerful dude with charcoal skin and white flowing hair equipped with an even powerful sword, and so on. You get the point, right?). And thus, I went ahead and got GOTM as soon as I could!
Factors that led me to start the Malazan Book of the Fallen - Now, since the turn of the year, I've been greatly influenced by certain factors that propelled me into starting this journey - (in no particular order really)
- Malaztube / Booktube / Youtube - I know there are quite a few number of people out there who make some really good content wrt Malazan, but the following were the ones that I personally was hugely inspired by (again, in no particular order) - Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews, Iskar Jarak, Andy Smith, The Fantasy Nuttwork, Mike's Book Reviews, Daniel Greene, Petrik Leo, CREEDER, etc. [NOT promotional in any way btw]
- Artworks / Fan arts / Cover designs / Other graphical representations - These were genuinely the things that pushed me into starting the series even further. Some really beautiful and amazing stuff present out there, without question. Makes you want to read it for yourself, to experience it first hand!
- Articles / Posts / Websites / Other online resources - There's a TON of stuff out there, in-depth / detailed to such an extent that you wouldn't deem possible. All that and then some. Whatever you need, it's there. The amount of dedication, effort, and analysis for this series made me realize that it was certainly more than special, and again, gave me that final push needed.
- This sub right here - No cap / sugar coating in any way. I've been following / reading the posts and the comments since the past 2-3 months from afar, and was really surprised to see a well balanced community. Also was able to check out the various resources, related sites, and the reading companions, which again, strengthens the fact that there's so much great content and info. present out there thanks to the efforts of many people. So keep it up and kudos for that! The only slight disappointment for me was that the number of Bonehunters present were/are just a little bit lower than what I expected. Hopefully many more recruits on the way! But hey, quality over quantity, as they say!
All the above factors did a massive job in pushing me to start the series immediately. And without wasting any more time, I ordered a copy of GOTM (which was on sale luckily!).
Some VERY important advice for all the new readers out there - I absolutely had to post this, no doubt. Especially with my personal experience, I find it a kind of motivation to try and help / stop this from happening to the brand new audience. If you want to avoid being spoiled wrt anything and everything about the series before even stepping a foot into it, here's some words of advice that you might consider following -
- TOTALLY AVOID THE BACK COVERS / SYNOPSIS! - Two major spoilers were ruined for me while doing this. Now, I get that you are looking to know what is happening and what not, but avoid this. Maybe just go for the GOTM one since it'll be your first book to pick (even though you'd still be wondering WTH is going on and why), but that's all. No more. Rather go for Malaztube / Booktube / Youtube content which has non spoiler stuff. Those are very well explained, and won't spoil anything for you. Rather will make the basic gist of the series pretty clear so you can directly hop on the wagon. Lots of channels to choose from as well. Even some of the articles / websites will do the same for you (hoping you avoid clicking where you shouldn't be clicking in the first place!).
- AVOID GETTING INTO THE ARTWORK / FAN ART TRAP! - Now, I'm not saying this in a negative way, of course not. There are some gorgeous, amazing artworks out there, especially fan arts. But make sure you only go through the ones with a NO SPOILER tag / label. Otherwise, don't even glance at it. Some artists / fans don't have the tags or labels on their personal pages / bios. So watch out. I have unfortunately received one of the biggest possible spoilers while doing this. So tread carefully. You have been warned!
- ARTICLES / WEBSITES / OTHER ONLINE RESOURCES - There are really some GREAT stuff out there about Malazan (I really can't help but stress this point even more). But one wrong click, and chances are you might get spoiled, like I did. So again, only go for the NON SPOILER stuff.
- ABOUT THIS SUB - There's a reason there are multiple, well defined flairs present here. So out of curiosity and excitement, DO NOT click on any of the spoiler posts, let alone the comments. Even then, the spoiler part is covered by a grey patch. DO NOT click on it if you don't want to get spoiled. Things I've been personally guilty of, but luckily, didn't spoil anything major as such.
Can you see a pattern here with all the three segments combined?
Anyways, so yeah, that's pretty much it from my perspective. I have been spoiled certain big stuff while doing this the wrong way (even though I've been assured through this sub that there's still a LOT to uncover and experience. So it isn't going to slow me down in any way btw). So, I do hope new comers won't tread the same path, and rather go through it in a much more cautioned approach for an even better first time experience!
AND BREATHE! Still here, are you? Really? Well, I hope it was either somewhat useful, kinda informative, or maybe even helpful in a way. Let me know if I've missed anything, or should've left out, or anything else for that matter.
Cheers! Oh, and one last thing. I've come to gather that this sub doesn't shy away from long posts. Well, so how about a decent sized one for a start, eh? ;)

2023.06.06 16:49 Evening_Reporter_879 Probably dodged a bullet with this one. Got this novel of a message from someone looking for a game no introduction or nothing.
Edit: This is a message I got from some random person while I was looking for people to fill the empty spots in my group for a campaign I'm about to run.
Realism is important yes, but verisimilitude is far more important to me as dnd 5e is a fantasy ttrpg so it is not going to be rooted that much in reality based on our conventional human information age standards. Part of the reason I love dnd 5e so much is for the escapism, I'm able to fully immerse myself in a fantastical world filled with action and adventure. Realism is the least of my worries. The only realism I want is in characterization and in the character dynamics to help with the immersion and make the character types more relatable as well as understandable. However verisimilitude matters because it engages the players making us want to continue with the game and motivates us into making a more complex and detail playable character to much the degree of intrigue and complexity that is present in the campaign.
I have been playing dnd 5e for 6 years now and pbp for 3 years. Est is my timezone. My hobbies/interests are playing dnd, playing videogames, drawing, reading writing and watching TV. My favorite genre of fiction is horror, especially gothic horror. My favorite gothic horror book is Frankenstein because it is the progenitor of the notorious theme of how man must not try to emulate God in the creation of artificial life as it threatens the very stability of life. Additionally, I find it interesting how Frankenstein is also a tale about the destructive aspects of masculinity in that Victor Frankenstein wants to replicate life however his own hubris and his idea of the perfect being is shaped by his own destructive impulses and shallowness. He rejects his creation even though the monster is a reflection of his own flaws as a byronic hero.
I look for an thrilling game that has a decent amount of lore and world-building. I want the world the game to be an enriching experience in terms of story and I want it to be engaging as I play. I want the npcs and pcs to feel multifaceted and three dimensional with their own in depth personalities, backstories, quirks and faults. I also prefer a game where I feel as though I have real agency in my choices. What I mean is that, I want a world that allows for me to have free reign to give it that open world feel. Naturally, I expect that world to have consequences, both negative and positive for certain actions to add to the realism. If I am intelligent and or cunning in my decision making then I like to be rewarded. Likewise, if I do something brash and careless, I expect to suffer the consequences. I want a world where I feel as though my agency has great influence in plot advancement and provides me with many opportunities for character development.
Gothic horror with is my favorite subgenre of my favorite genre of fiction. Horror is the most visceral genre because it triggers one of our most primal emotions as humans fear. Gothic horror is a genre that utilizes the macabre and often times supernatural to force characters to be exposed to the darker aspects of life or humanity that we try to suppress due to fear, whether it is external or internal. Horror themes of good and evil and how good and evil are defined based on the author's beliefs and values, which often reflect the distinct fears of their respective culture's. Such an example is how Frankenstein is a subversive analogy of the creation of man in the book of genesis, conveying how man should not play God, because there will be irreparable consequences. They allow the audience to explore a different type of world through their imagination and the writers imagination showing hidden desires or curiosity. Additionally interesting how gothic horror combines both horror and romance so gives a very different twist to the usual romance story, revealing how the two often integrate and the darker aspects of relationships not often displayed by conventional fiction/media. Frankenstein shows how Victor loves his fiance Elizabeth but it is a possessive love as he sees her as his property and not her own autonomous being. Gothic horror plays with minds and causes the audience to question reality. Are such unexplainable occurrences supernatural or preternatural. I love vampires, because to me they represent a juxtaposition between freedom and subjugation. In Dracula, I believe vampirism as an allegory for female sexual liberation. As Lucy Westerna is confide to the puritanical norms of female chastity and marriage of Victorin England, through Dracula she is freed from such restrictve social expectations and experience a new form of self actualization. However, through the use of a symbolically phallic as well as sexually intense imagery, Van hellsing and the other men kill her and the other brides for defying their subjugation. Additionally, Dracula frees his brides from their own subjugation to replace it with his own as they become in a sense an extension of him, his property and lose their newfound freedom. It's a very paradoxical situation to be in.
I find vampires so complex and interesting as they are often allegories for very intriguing social phenomenon. We are all part of the life cycle. Like a seed we are born, we sprout, we grow, we mature and decay, making room for future generations who, like seedlings, are reborn through us. The vampires of myth and literature embody some of that same tension I had regarding death. They have near immortality, and yet are tragically frozen in time. They cannot grow and change like the seasons, or, in most descriptions, birth new life, and yet they have super powers and strength and often the wisdom that can come with extreme age–an often cynical, jaundiced view of life. Humans want to be part of nature, and yet we still want to push the edge of the envelope, seeking to be more. Vampires let us play with death and the issue of mortality. They let us ponder what it would mean to be truly long lived. They allow us to ask questions we usually bury, except in science fiction. What does one value more and what does one value less with a short human life? Is the vampire’s frozen “life” sterile? Does life only mean something when it is part of a cycle of birth, growth, decay, death and the birth of new life? Is there a beauty that comes only from the cycles of the seasons of which we are a part of. These questions regarding vampirism in fiction are all so fascinating to me.
Cosmic horror is my second favorite subgenre of horror after Cosmic horror tales draw upon the power of the sublime to make us feel small, inconsequential, and totally helpless against something vast and natural. Cosmic horror completely dismantle our ideology as humans that we are the center of the universe or the most powerful, intelligent beings existing. This revelation causes us to realize our insignificance in the grand scheme of the universe. Naturally, such a revelation that there are beings that are exponentially more powerful than us, to the point that trying to comprehend their vastness would cause us to go mad, is completely horrifying it that it leaves us feeling helpless and at the mercy of said higher beings. Cosmic horror is about finding those moments where the unknown crashes up against the known. Cosmic horror plays on that fear, driving you to a startling encounter with the ocean where you are forced to confront how little you can do to change vast cosmic forces that shape humanity. Cosmic horror is so fascinating because of how it completely subverts or myopic hubris of ourselves as humans and perceptions of the universe.
My favorite fictional dnd 5e characters from Critical role are Percival De Rolo and Grog from Vox Machina, Nott and Caleab from Mighty Nein. Percival is my favorite because I relate to his trauma heavily in terms of possessing an extremely debilitating level of rage that impairs your reasoning and rationality and causes you to become so externally and internally caustic that the people dear to you distance themselves from you out of fear and you become a metaphorically monstrous version of yourself that is unrecognizable due how how hateful you've become. I essentially love Grog because he is a simple yet complex gentle giant. Grog originally came from a barbaric group of Goliath warlords who indiscriminately kill simply from the pleasure of it. He hedonistically killed without any guilt or introspective because it makes him feel powerful. However, meeting Pike's grandfather and seeing the picture of Pike changed all that because the innocence in their eyes caused him to greatly change his perspective and have a existential realization that his occupation as an evil barbarian was inherently wrong, leading to him atoning for his war crimes. That is extremely impressive as it shows Grog's empathy and self-actualization as to who he is meant to be in terms of a life purpose. Even if it nearly cost him his life twice, he will no longer hurt or kill the innocent. It's a really beautiful character arc. Nott is simply my favorite because she is so eccentric and funny in a somewhat crude and dark way and I find that really charming and entertaining. Caleb is my favorite because he mirrors Percival in many ways however, Caleb has guilt and remorse for killing several innocent people after being manipulated by another mage. His character arc of learning to forgive himself is breathtakingly beautiful because I can relate to it heavy in terms of having to forgive myself.
