The build for patch 1.4 has been sent out, which means that the platform holders for the consoles will review the build, and find any possible issues. Once they give us a green light, the patch is ready to be published on the the planned date, which for 1.4 is June 19th.

A new Season

With patch 1.4 comes Season 4: Splash up! Like you can probably guess, this is a Season filled with pool parties, beach sunsets, chill activities and summer fun.

It’s a Season for splashing around and not fighting the current, but rather following it! There will be two events during this Season, one of them our first ever Pride event, that comes with some extra freebies, and another secret one later along the road, which will make the delight of players who love their Tems!
Also, there’s a slight change to Seasons’ length from this patch onward: Seasons will now last a month longer. We’d like to have more time to polish the content we put out. Some features have gotten out of hand and were becoming too big to cleanly launch in three months, leaving us with no leeway to fix issues or quickly react to unforeseen circumstances. There’s always something popping up from behind us, be it bugs, failures in the certification process, unexpected interactions… so we’d like to have some time to polish both the current patch and previous patches that might need our attention, without that eating into the next Season and patch’s time.
With this, Season 4 will last from June 19th to September 25th, when Season 5 will begin.

The Arcade Bar has been postponed

Some bad news, but we promise it’s only this one! Due to development load and unexpected delays, we’re postponing the Arcade Bar. It’s a huge task, both technically and artistically, so we’re waiting on a more suitable season. We understand this might make 1.4 less interesting for PvE players , but we try to balance PvE and PvP each season. Since last patch, 1.3, had the Challenge Modes, and 1.5 will have the new Mythical, with it’s Lair, quest and route, patch 1.4 is more PvP oriented. We’re, at the time, unable to confirm for which patch it’ll be scheduled, but we’re currently looking at 1.6 or 1.7, since 1.5 is packed. We’ll let you know as soon as we have that secured and well decided.

Dojo Wars v2

Dojo Wars have long been a prickly topic within the community, so a few months ago we asked for your focused feedback on the matter. Following that conversation, we’ve made a handful of changes to Dojo Wars that we hope will make them a bit more enjoyable and less demanding to keep up with:
Dojo Wars will now take place monthly instead of weekly. The sign-up period where players can subscribe to a Dojo War will be a week instead of a day, and it’ll be the week before the Dojo Wars take place. Clubs who sign up for a DW but don’t show up on the actual Wars will be penalized by taking Pansuns away from their Club Vault.
The King of the Hill system that allowed current regents to only fight in the finals has been discarded. Regents will have to compete for the Dojo again from 0 with everyone else.
Besides changes to the main format, there are also several more changes that concern Dojo Wars rounds:

• The matchmaking system will now prioritize to battle different players in each round, instead of matching players purely based on points. If a player has already faced another specific player, the system will prioritize not matching them again over their points.
• The timing of rounds has changed as well. Instead of having a set date for all matches, rounds will start 5 minutes after the last combat of the previous round has ended. That is, once the last match of the round ends, a 5-minute timer sets off, and commences the next round. This means you’ll have to pay attention during the day of your rounds, but rounds will be much faster and dynamic.
• Dojo Wars finals will require 9 players instead of the previous 11.
• Players will now also get individual rewards for each match won during Dojo Wars, on top of the Club rewards they might get. Individual rewards include juicy stuff like ETCs, hotfixes, Feathers and even Novas.

Important notice! The first week of the patch would overlap with the first week of Dojo Wars, and with this new system it wouldn’t work. For this reason, there won’t be a Dojo War in the month of June, and the first Dojo War will be on the week of July 24-30. This means the last Club to hold the 1.3 Dojos on the week of June 12th to 18th will hold them for an entire month. They’d only get the rewards for the week they play, but they’ll keep control of Dojo Parks.

Recommended teams on Showdown

During this last patch cycle we’ve been considering how to make it easier for players new to PvP to jump into the competitive scene, as we consider PvP to be a really strong suit of Temtem, but we know how hard to fully grasp it can be. That’s why, working with the balance helper team and the new analytics we’ve been working on, we have created an automatic recommendation system and some pre-defined builds to choose from; both will surely help make the jump into Ranked ladder much easier and interesting.
When you head over to Showdown to create a Ranked Showdown squad and choose your first Temtem, you’ll now be offered recommendations. The system will suggest Tem options as you go building your team, and it will shift and readjust its recommendations to accommodate the Tems you choose. The analytics that power this system drink from the actual PvP players of the game and what they’re building, so they’ll change and adapt to each Season.
After picking each Tem you’ll be able to fully customize it, as usual, but there will also be two pre-defined builds for each Temtem (single evo, or the last stage of the evo line). These builds have been made to cover their most common roles in Ranked matches, and sometimes it’ll incorporate two different roles, or one same role in a different way. These builds were hand-made by our balance team, keeping in mind the current meta, so they’ll be updated as it changes!
Both of these systems are fully integrated within Showdown, so it only works on Showdown squads. Of course, we encourage you to investigate on the reasoning behind these recommendations, as learning a new playstyle is complex and takes time but it’s the only way to know how to make it work. We hope this will help onboard new players into PvP!

To top this off, we’ve also been working on a series of official video tutorials for players who want to have a guide to take that next step into competitive. It has been created with a lot of help from our pro community, and it covers the less evident, more complex strategies that are played in the higher tiers of the Ranked ladder.

Changes to the rotating Premium Store

The Premium, rotating store will now have 2 Premium item slots as opposed to 3. In exchange for this, we’ve duplicated the daily item rotation, from 4 to 8. As it already happens, 2 slots out of those 8 will be purchasable with Feathers, following the current pattern.
We’ve noticed the 3 featured items were always unbalanced between each other, and that the rhythm was hard to sustain for both purchasing players and the dev team. We’re giving you more options on the daily, because soon the items from previous Tamer Passes will start population them and it’ll be a huge pool, and we’ll be spacing out the featured ones so we can have more time. We’ll still be working on them, and nothing has been scrapped out, it will only take a little longer to appear in the weekly featured shop.
Plus! The mounts available through the Premium Store and the Tamer Pass (both free and premium) will let you pre-visualize the surf version of the mount before you buy it. No more asking about the surf version in the Discord server! We know there’s more pre-visualization stuff to work through, but we hope this is a step towards clarity and that it’ll be good!

Battle camera toggle option

Following community feedback, we’ve decided to include a battle camera toggle option in patch 1.4. You’ll be able to turn on and off your idle battle cameras from the Settings option in the main menu! Although this is not a huge change to the game as a whole, we understand it’s very important for some players and wanted to give it a bit of a spotlight here, since we know some peeps are really hoping for this.

Sponsoring community-created events

Historically, us at Crema have not been able to support or sponsor community-run events, because we lacked a way to do so without getting in legal shenanigans and because we were too caught up in development. In the past month we received a petition from a community member to let them split their TemCS prize into more codes so they could give them as prizes in a tournament they were organizing. This sparked a conversation, and we’ve decided to create an official form to ask Crema for prizes to encourage and motivate people to take part in community-made events. This doesn’t mean we’re going to be supporting all the events that pop up, but we’re hoping to be able to help a little and champion the events we love and would like to see more of.

There are some rules to all this, like prizes can only be already existing in-game items, that the community-run event has to fit certain standards, and that we’ll keep the right to choose what events we support. We’re also for now only considering events that have a reputable and trusty history, so we encourage you to create community events of your own and share them in our community-event channel!

A huge surprise one week after launch!

There’s something else, an extra new thing, coming a week after 1.4 that we haven’t done before and are very excited and nervous about! We’ve been secretly working on it for a while now, and it’s taken a toll on our development time so we’re really eager to talk about it, but it’s not the right time yet. It’s arguably a new feature to the game, and we believe it’ll help us expand Temtem, its userbase and its longevity. It won’t be as exciting as a proper new feature for existing players, but we hope everyone will join us in the excitement this represents and the shared goals it covers. Since it won’t be available until one week later, expectedly on the 27th, we hope you’ll help us build up hype for the new players this will (hopefully!) attract, and that you’ll show them around.

As electric and fuel-efficient vehicles become more ubiquitous, it’s become necessary to release a vehicle mileage tax that promises to be more effective than the traditional gas tax. The details are still unknown, yet it’s obvious that the government is going to implement some changes.
Since the Highway Trust Fund is predicted to thin out by the end of 2021, the issue at stake is quite urgent. Even though it’s not likely that car mileage tax will go into force during the year, we might see the first steps in the process soon enough.
The new tax arises a lot of questions: what does it imply? Is it truly promising or will it burden the wallets of Americans? Below we’ll answer all of these questions and clarify this initiative as much as we can.

WHAT IS VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX?

Vehicle miles traveled (VMT) levy is the initiative that would tax drivers by the number of miles they travel. Instead of charging them depending on their fuel consumption, it would collect the mileage data and distribute taxes accordingly.
The money collected via tax by the mile would be spent on improving the infrastructure. According to Pete Buttigieg, the Transportation Secretary, this tax is certainly under discussion in the light of the Infrastructure Plan that Joe Biden proposed.
Despite the fact that the expenditures of infrastructure are exceeding the revenues of the Highway Trust Fund, the Federal Government hasn’t reformed the fuel tax since 1993. The states themselves have increased the gas levy and tried to update taxes to make up for the shortfalls in the budget.
However, it’s obvious that the changes are necessary on the federal level, especially if the Congress approves Biden’s Infrastructure Plan. The President wants the US to improve its infrastructure, which includes modernizing 20,000 miles of roads and improving 10,000 bridges. Naturally, such extensive works would need funding, which has to be collected via taxes.
Vehicle miles traveled tax is shifting focus towards the consumer. Namely, it captures the maintenance costs of the highway and targets people who use the roads the most. It also happens to be a more modern approach, considering the fact that the number of electric vehicles is increasing. Moreover, newer cars have higher mpg (miles per gallon), which decreases the revenue that would be collected from fuel tax. Let’s look at the numbers: on the federal level, gas tax per VMT was 1.51 cents in 1994 compared to 0.75 cents in 2018. According to the research conducted by Tax Foundation, if such a trend continues (and it likely will), the differences in taxes would amount to $7.7 billion.

VMT VS MOTOR FUEL TAX

Motor fuel tax is a levy that collects a fee on fuel, including gasoline, diesel, and gasohol. In most cases, this tax is collected depending on the gallons of fuel a person uses. Since it’s not collected from the final price the consumer pays, it rarely increases unless the tax rate is enhanced.
Even though certain states have increased their gas mileage taxes, the revenue is still less than the expenses that are needed to maintain the highways and roads. This approach aims to tax those who use the roads, however, it’s not self-sufficient anymore.
Considering the fact that fuel efficiency increases and electric cars are starting to occupy our roads, people are using less fuel. In other words, fuel gas tax is eroding as it’s failing to serve the main function it has.

Difference between VMT and Motor Fuel Tax

The main difference between VMT and motor fuel tax is that the former levies mileage and affects all cars equally regardless of their fuel efficiency, while the latter focuses on gas consumption and charges low mpg vehicles with higher taxes.
The world’s focus on alternative fuel isn’t going to shift anywhere else due to all the environmental issues. If the motor fuel tax remains the same, the chances are the federal government will constantly have to find funds elsewhere.
The federal government has two options if it wants to solve the shortfalls in the Highway Trust Fund: it has to increase motor fuel tax or substitute it with the mileage tax.
Implementing VMT won’t be an easy process and will require a lot of manpower and finances. However, it seems to be more suitable for modern vehicles. After all, it’s aimed at improving the infrastructure.
Oregon and California have already launched pilot programs and other states are following. The federal government is open to the changes with Pete Buttigieg showing its support.

WHY DO WE NEED A VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX?

Because the motor fuel tax is eroding and can’t cover the expenditures any more. Plus, now is the perfect timing – the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST Act) is expiring this year. This means that the federal government has to come up with a new plan to make sure the Highway Trust Fund doesn’t thin out.
Don’t get me wrong, motor fuel tax isn’t a bad thing. It had its own purpose that prioritized alternative fuel over petroleum. The tax dealt with the negative effects of pollution and traffic congestion. Besides, the motor fuel tax was quite successful at reversing the negative side effects of automobiles.
But as time passes by and fuel consumption decreases, it’s losing its meaning in its current form. Therefore, we need changes and the pay-per-mile tax could be one.
Once again, I’m not saying that tax by the mile is a flawless solution – it certainly has its drawbacks. But if we want to continue funding the roads and renovating the infrastructure, we don’t really have a choice.
The federal government has to make a decision and the chances are they will shift their support towards the VMT tax.

HOW WOULD VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX BE IMPLEMENTED?

According to the research conducted by the Tax Foundation, the federal government has two ways of implementing the vehicle mileage tax. They can choose a simple but less effective method or a more complex yet more efficient way.

A simple way

A simple way of implementing the car mileage tax would be to create a flat rate for all vehicles. Taxes would be differentiated depending on the weight and the number of axles. The reason is simple – the heavier the car, the more damage it causes to the road. Vice versa, the wear, and tear on the roads reduce with the number of axles.

Even though a flat rate seems to be simpler to implement, it has certain drawbacks. It would be hard to levy those who travel from state to state. They would cause damage to the roads of both states, however, they would only pay taxes in the state they reside in.
Another issue is that tax by the mile wouldn’t be effective if it were implemented at the state level only. Pilot programs such as the OReGo in Oregon showcase the limitations of the new tax system. There’s only so much you can figure out with voluntary GPS tracking.

A more complex route

A more complex route includes detailed GPS tracking. Even though it would need more resources, it would be more efficient. Namely, people who live in rural areas would essentially pay more money. Since they cause more damage to the roads and produce more pollution, it makes sense that their taxes would be higher.
As a result, they would have to decide if the travel was truly worth the money.
The problem with a complex route is that it could become too complicated both for the states and taxpayers. This would reduce transparency and make it impossible to collect taxes properly.
Probably the best way to implement vehicle miles traveled tax would be to find a silver lining between these two approaches. Though it wouldn’t be easy, it’s necessary to come up with an optimal solution. Otherwise, the new tax system might collapse.

OPPOSING ARGUMENTS TO THE VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX

As mentioned, mileage tax isn’t perfect and certain groups have concerns about it. As much as we’d like to ignore them, they are quite real. They certainly have to be addressed before the tax gets implemented.

Privacy and data security concerns

Privacy and data security concerns will be especially worrisome if GPS tracking is in the project. I’ll be honest – I would have a hard time agreeing to the idea of the government knowing the location of my vehicle all the time. But arguably, these issues can be tackled.
The pilot program, OReGo, for instance, deletes the collected data after 30 days. Limiting the data collection only to necessary information could potentially reduce the privacy security concerns.
There could also be a private company that would act as a middleman. They would collect the GPS data and control what information is transferred to the government.

Environmental concerns

Environmental groups worry that VMT might decrease the popularity of fuel-efficient and electric vehicles, and promote the use of petroleum cars. The motor fuel tax was quite efficient in tackling environmental issues, but with the new tax system, those cars that have higher emissions might not pay taxes at all. They might be eligible for the tax allowance, which could be detrimental to the environment.

The shift in burden towards fuel-efficient vehicles

If the new tax system becomes official or if the federal government comes up with a hybrid model, fuel-efficient vehicles would suffer the most. They would essentially have to pay more taxes, which can hinder the voting process for the bill.

Higher expenses

Compared to the motor fuel tax, the new tax system would be quite costly to implement. The states would need to send specific hardware to the car-owners to track their mileage. The federal government would have to monitor more than 268 million vehicles, which is certainly extensive work.

CAN VEHICLE MILEAGE TAX INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MILEAGE FRAUD?

Potentially, people who wouldn’t be willing to pay taxes would find ways to reduce their fees, which might include committing mileage fraud. Even if the government sends out specific devices, it will be hard to verify whether the mileage is accurate or not.
The accuracy of the mileage would be even harder to check if the data about traveled miles was collected from the cars themselves.
The tools that change vehicle’s mileage are quite widespread these days. They are cheaper than the expense that a higher tax would cause. Odometer fraud is already a prevalent issue and I’m afraid it would become even more serious if the pay-per-mile comes into force.
People usually use two tools to reduce the numbers on their odometer. The first of them is the Odometer Correction Tool. The device can reprogram the trip meter, however, it can’t alter the existing data in control units. It’s unlikely that people will use such a unit – the information about mileage will probably be pulled from the internal storage, not the odometer.
It’s more likely that they will use the Mileage Blocker instead. But how does it work? – it stops recording the mileage in all control units. It’s far more efficient in the sense that its performance is impossible to detect. The device has easy DIY Installation instruction that will save your time and money. It also has a mobile application for additional features. The device is available online and you can purchase the mileage blocker from Superkilometerfilter. Even though this tool is not for fraudulent applications, people might take advantage of its features. In case of any questions please look through the support page or contact the customer service.
Essentially, the VMT might solve one problem but it might increase another. We just have to decide what our priorities are. I don’t think that the government will fail the new tax system just because of this problem, but we still must be aware of it and prepare accordingly.

FINAL TAKEAWAY

Nobody can claim that tax by the mile is a perfect system. It’s still necessary to discuss all the details and weigh its drawbacks and benefits. We still don’t know if the US will adopt a new law, but the chances are the federal government will introduce the changes.

Weekend in the Tara Mountains - Tarweek Guesthouse

Milan Miletich invited us to relax in his home on Mount Tara in Serbia. There was no need to beg us to go to the mountains. Two weeks later, we found ourselves there, and now I am writing a detailed review of the trip and the place.
Before the trip, we saw a lot of photos of the location and scrolled through the Instagram of the house (yes, the house is not simple and has a profile on Instagram!) The place is called Tarweek.

Can you get to Tarweek?

There is a bus to Bajina Bašta (Bajina Bašta) from the central bus station in Belgrade. If at the bus station ticket office, you were sent to the bus driver to get a ticket, don't forget to buy a ticket at the ticket office to get to the buses. This fee is for the use of the bus station infrastructure. If the key is sold at the ticket office, you can pass the turnstile with it.
The ride to Baina Bashta takes 4:30 hours. Halfway there is a cozy roadside cafe with a store and restrooms. The drivers will sit for a soup plate; you have 20 minutes for a snack. The hot meals are simple and wonderful.
In Baina Bashta, Milan Miletic will call you a cab home. Tarweek is actually at 1000 meters and along the winding 20+ kilometers. It is unlikely to get there.
There is a serpentine with beautiful views. Halfway up, you'll have a dam and a few kilometers of fantastic views of Lake Perućac (Jezero Peruquac). If the cab driver likes you, he will stop at the observation point and give you a moment for a photo.

The first floor is the dining room and porch with a fireplace. This is where they study when it's cool and raining.
But the most exciting thing is the outdoor activities.
I'll tell you about nature separately because that's the main thing to come here for!
What kind of activities are there in Tarweek? Any kind.

• Athletic trainers hold training camps here.
• Coaches teach classes.
• Language teachers conduct language courses.
• IT people are taking a break from civilization.
• Companies hold team building and corporate events.
• And shamans pump up their shamanic levels.

In Tarweek you can do any group training. In general, any! The essence is that the group gathers away from the city, away from civilization, in the woods, and works hard on what is needed.
At Tarweek, you can relax with a large group of people. Or you can not rest but plunge on a run or walk the slopes of hiking trails. It's where hiking fans go. Because Tarweek is the heart of Tara National Park. Many viewpoints have heady views of mountains, canyons, and forests. And you'll have to get to these viewpoints on your own: several (tens) of miles and hundreds of feet up.

What are the living conditions at Tarweek?

Before you move in, they will discuss meals with you. There is a professional kitchen with cooks. They will buy groceries for you and feed you as you order. Vegan, gluten-free, and other self-limiting topics are worked out. But the food is so good, you'll ask for the illegal stuff yourself! It happens regularly; I didn't come up with anything.
The living conditions are thoughtfully Spartan. No one will make you wash in the creek; your room has a shower, toilet, and hot water. A bed and clean linens are provided. But to live by two or three. The laundry is centralized in a washing machine. Have breakfast, lunch, and dinner on schedule: and go to the nearest store 25 kilometers and 700 meters down the serpentine.
You will have a communal table and classes in front of the fireplace or the pavilion by the hearth.
You will have the most delicious air. You will have glorious food. You'll have nothing to distract you from your goals. Nothing will distract you from why you are here.

The Nature of Tara

The nature you find yourself in is the essence of this place. The nature of Tara is what you are here for. Tara is covered with forest: pine trees mixed with deciduous trees. The temperature here is very comfortable in the summer compared to the heat in the city. We caught a rainy day, and it was beautiful! We saw a sunny day, and it was terrific!

Forests and valleys with meadows surround Tarweek. There are hiking and trekking trails in all directions from the house. There are so many that you'd have to live here for two months to explore them all and walk twenty trails every day. Walking the entire Tara is a challenge!
We've been running. We walked after our runs. We saw some lovely places! Where the experience makes you reflect when you haven't seen that before.
We were told that we had been to pop places. And the leading beauty is farther and higher.
Describing it all in words is useless. I'll show you what I took with my iPhone over the weekend. What's sad, the camera doesn't capture the volume, the smells, the scale, and the spirit of the place.

What did we do on Tara?

Since we came to visit as friends and not for training, our leisure time was our concern. We ran the trails. I wanted to try trail running; I tried it. Gravel roads with varying difficulty climb and descents, continuous oxygen cocktail, and thin air 1000 meters above sea level. After the training, you eat, sleep, and do nothing—a concentrated, uncluttered rest.
The kids had two happy days.
We cleared our minds and crammed a week's worth of life into two days. Suddenly you realize that sitting at sunset with a cup of tea and watching a cloud puff up on top of a mountain is what happiness is all about. It turns out that you don't need much to be happy.
You can walk, talk about everything in the world and fit into one day three times more time and events than in everyday life. All the problems and worries remain about 1000 meters below, and here you have everything to be happy.

How do you organize something in Tarweek?

If you're a coach, trainer, or business owner, and you've got a group session in mind, and the only question is location, consider isolating your mentees so they can get a better handle on your knowledge. I can't think of a better place to do this than Tarweek.

For more background context,

• TeFS is designed to overcome the lack of native stereo vision support in commercial driving simulators, and we demonstrate its effectiveness using GTA V by bringing the TeFS plug-in.
• We used this method to generate GTAV-TeFS, the first large-scale GTA V stereo-driving dataset, containing over 88,000 high-resolution stereo RGB image pairs, along with temporal information, GPS coordinates, camera poses, and full-resolution dense depth maps. Enabling multiple Visual SLAM tasks such as stereo odometry, RGB-D odometry, and stereo matching tasks.
• Full control through menu-based UI system, code-free stereo data collection. Configurable stereo setups such as stereo baseline, camera position, camera angles, etc.
• Multi-destination support for creating loop closure and complex road mapping.
• The goal of our work is to bring more high-fidelity stereo data from commercial-grade game simulators into the research domain and push the boundary of autonomy algorithms.
