2023.06.09 20:43 Square_Zer0 How you can help yourself by setting your goals.

I see so many questions on here from people wanting to know what to do with X amount of money or broadly asking how they should save or invest money. The one thing most of these questions all have in common is that the vast majority of the people asking them haven’t set any kind of long term goal for themselves at all. It’s hard for those of us with experience to give you advice if we don’t know what your priorities are.
The very first thing you need to be doing before any kind of investing or saving is figure out what your goal is, what are you wanting to accomplish? Where do you want to be in the future? Do you want to live comfortably while working for somebody else? Do you want to start your own business and if so what type? Do you want to be able to retire early?
If you’re saving or investing for your retirement what type of lifestyle can you be comfortable and happy with? Where do you want to retire to? My advice for someone wanting to retire on the coast in Florida or in Hawaii would be very different from my advice for someone wanting to retire in Wyoming or Nebraska.
If you’re wanting to generate money for education or your children’s education, what type of school you’re planning for and what type of education you’re wanting to get and where that’s at makes a huge difference.
So think about your goals before asking what you should do with X amount of money or what you should invest in. Include that information in your posts and everyone will be able to help you better and make more informed suggestions.

2023.06.09 20:31 Justme12_loey How to know if you damaged your metabolism?

I have been on diet on and off for about 1 and half year. As summer has begun, I am back to diet again and in winter I wasn’t dieting and gained 5kilos!! These days I am on diet 5 days and for 2 days I eat junk food if i go out. But if I don’t I just eat healthy stuffs and I do OMAD and eat one bowl yogurt+oats+almonds or fruits or sometimes rice+lentil+curry. But I haven’t lost weight yet! I am on really low intake majority of the days but I don’t restrict too much either. I feel as if I have ruined my metabolism by being on extremely low calorie diet because now if I increase my intake even to the slightest amount I gain weight

2023.06.09 20:20 AnalysisHungry3591 Dropped 6 packages off at USPS. 2 delivered within 48 hours, the other 4 are stuck on “USPS in possession of item”

I sell sports cards on eBay, have been doing it for a while now with no issues. I frequently check tracking updates on my sold cards and have never seen updates take longer than a day or two. To make a long story short, I sold 6 cards in a day and 2 of them are the most expensive cards I’ve ever sold (both need to be authenticated by eBay). Like an idiot, I didn’t even think of getting insurance on them, and I drove to a different post office that I normally don’t use to drop them off. This was 3 days ago. The 2 cheapest cards out of the 6 cards shipped have been delivered to their destination. The remaining 4, totaling $1,200 between all 4, have been stuck on “USPS in possession of item” since I dropped them off.
I’ve read enough similar situations on here to know that my best course of action right now is to hang tight and hope for the best. But does anyone else think it’s a little funny that these 4 expensive cards are the ones that haven’t budged in tracking, while a couple $30 cards made it swiftly to their destination? I know it’s only 3 days but this is legit driving me nuts. Personal financial reasons have me desperate for these to be found as well.
Has anyone else dropped off multiple packages, all identical in packaging and weight, with only a couple of them getting stuck at the acceptance scan? I could also use some feel good stories from people that had a similar situation and it ended up working out fine for them. Trying to get rid of this pit in my stomach telling me that they were stolen/badly misplaced and I’ll be out over $1,000 at a time when I need it most. Thanks

2023.06.09 20:02 evdaddy69 STATE OF THE GAME REPORT#MSFPV

The Players Voice movement would like to officially present the STATE OF THE GAME document to the community and Boundless.
The Players Voice Movement currently consists of over 5.6K members representing over 500 alliances. The main objective of this movement is to change the process of communication between Boundless and the community. Throughout our process, speaking with numerous focus groups within the discord, reviewing polls and measuring overall community sentiment. One thing is clear: players wish to have a broader voice with Boundless if they are to continue to support the game and platform.
Key Issues:
Communication - We've had a number of instances of late or limited communication and transparency. Better communication and transparency would only help with concerns of direction, bugs, compensation, etc. Communication is reactive in approach.
Problems Abound - Almost daily in the game, to varying degrees of significance. Far too often events are going live inaccurately. Blogs are being published with the wrong information. Key dates are completely missed .
Player Burnout - Uncertainty and concern are everywhere and players are at a crossroads. Should they keep playing? Should they become far more casual or quit?
While we believe the community managers, developers and Boundless on a whole are doing their best to address matters, too many processes are still missing the mark. The community wants change! They want to see the game they love flourish and they want to have fun again.
For Boundless to be able to regain the confidence of the player base at large, a different approach to community representation seems in order. A sounding board for Boundless, a united and representative body from the playerbase to help bring some clarity about community sentiment to Boundless BEFORE content is pushed out to the public. A PLAYER’S COUNCIL feels acutely appropriate and warranted at this moment and we will be actively pushing for this as our number one concern moving forward.
This is by no means the end of the Players Voice Movement nor does it represent everything that can or should be addressed. We hope this serves as the beginning of a long-term, structured and collaborative engagement process with Boundless and the player community that supports this platform/game well into the future. This report, in particular, is meant to give Boundless an in-depth look at the players perspective collected from our server. We offer several data points we hope Boundless will take into consideration and see if they can align with any of their current strategies. We want to be clear that this is not a 40+ page document of requests. In our conclusion we have included challenges and requests that we believe need immediate consideration. We hope Boundless considers these requests with gravity and urgency. We feel they are essential to creating a better player experience and putting the community and the game back on track. Please do explore the deeper report as a lot of effort and time went into creating it and we wanted to make sure we represent as much of the player base as possible.
We would like to thank Boundless for the open line of communication we currently have and their willingness to listen to player concerns. We would like to thank the community for their support and we will continue to move forward advocating for a greater player experience.
We will follow this up with another #MSFPV action so alliances can show unity and support for the document. We hope that the community joins our server if you haven't, and participate in our # movement from Monday, June 12th to Sunday, June 18th.
Happy Gaming

2023.06.09 19:37 ADistantDreamer Moving to Rutland

Hi, hello.
My parents just bought a house in Rutland, right near the foothills on the east side of town and I'm making the big adult decision of moving back in with them for a hot second to save myself and some money. Currently, I live in actual hell (florida) and am desperate to get out of here and also be able to walk up a damn hill when I want. I grew up in Southern California and the coldest weather I've had was a couple years living abroad; it would hover around freezing sometimes in the dead of winter and I saw a couple snow flurries. Thankfully from that, I've got a bunch of winter clothes packed away that I longingly pull out sometimes. ah, wool.
This will probably be the most rural I've lived and I'm preparing myself (to drive across state lines for stuff I want). I'd like to know a little more about what I'm getting into with the area, especially with all the ~crime~ I've read about. I grew up in suburbs where the parks are littered with broken glass, needles, homeless camps, etc. I've seen neighbors having fist-fights in their yard, throw bottles at cars charging them, I had my car broken into the first day I moved into my college apartment, friends mugged right outside the apartment, etc etc. I'm assuming the crime people talk about in Rutland is not going to be comparable.
Winter:
  1. I plan on getting snow tires on my car in late September as I'll be on vacation the last week/first week of October. Is this a reasonable time? I'm not used to seasons, just hot all year. It's a FWD compact crossover.
  2. Looking at maps and street view, I'll be mainly on paved roads, which makes me feel better about snow or mud, but I'm still worried about icy hills. Am I overthinking this?
  3. I honestly don't know what to expect for winter. Part of me imagines being snowed in, losing power, etc, but I could be overthinking that as well. I suppose a lot of that depends on whether there's a polar vortex or freak weather happening.
Rutland
  1. I am in my early 30's with a partner the same age, neither of us have facebook so finding social activities is a little tougher. I've seen frontporchforum mentioned a few times, which I'll look into for more specific suggestions/advice, etc. Are there other resources for finding events like live music, volunteering, foraging?
    1. FORAGING: I want to go foraging/mushroom hunting and not be poisoned! I will be trying to find guides/groups, so I would love any leads there.
  2. I've got an electric bike, is the city/town rideable? I'd love to cruise around the hills and such but also don't want to be roadkill....or hit a deer?
  3. I'll lock it up wherever I go, but are there places that are not safe, for biking or even walking?
  4. Bugs: where I currently live, every window is filled with spiders and webs. Every day I go out to my car, I catch stray webs. I assume this will be similar in Vermont, but is the winter at least a break from them? Do spiders/webs fill any space not used daily?
This post is long enough, I'll stop myself here.

2023.06.09 18:34 ColoRhino I just finished Steinbeck’s The Winter of Our Discontent.

Wow. Absolutely devastating and beautiful. Thick with character development and dilemma. This was one of the few novels of Steinbeck’s I hadn’t read yet. I’m a huge fan of his as I feel often times he is writing directly to me, almost for me. The Winter of Our Discontent struck so close to home with me it was scary. I see much of myself in Ethan Allen Hawley. The evolution of my identity and manhood rife with self-deprecation, questioning, uncertainty, but unwavering in my love for my family despite our many shortcomings. I also saw much of my own kids in his, Ellen and Allen. Spirited and sassy. Tender and stubborn. What a wonderfully crafted story this was. If you are a fan of Steinbeck’s and haven’t read this one, I highly recommend you do. I wish I could go back in time and read it for the first time.

2023.06.09 18:34 Griffemon Team RWBY can never win can they?

A random thought made me think over the entire series, and it made me realize that the heroes are consistently on the back foot playing defense.
Even when they win the fight, it turns out their victory was pointless because the villain’s plans will work even with that loss. The best the heroes can do is constantly run away and try to mitigate damage.
Volume 1: Ruby beats Torchwick at the dust robbery and then at the robbery at the docks, but neither of these victories matter because Torchwick gets away and the fact that he wasn’t able to steal the dust doesn’t matter.
Volume 2: Team RWBY distrusts the White Fang rally and beats Torchwick in his mech suit but Torchwick gets away and he also has a bunch more mech suits so it doesn’t matter. Ruby fights Cinder at the dance later but loses and nobody noticed the virus she put in the computer system. RWBY’s only real victory is stopping the breach from being a complete massacre of civilians and getting Torchwick arrested but given how everything afterwards plays out the breach was never intended to take down Vale and Torchwick was meant to be arrested so Cinder’s plan is still going perfectly. Team RWBY even say at the end of the volume they have no clue what’s going on or what they’ve really accomplished.
Volume 3: Beacon falls, the only thing that stops this from being a total victory for Cinder is that Ruby maimed her and she didn’t get the relic, but Cinder gets better and we didn’t know the relic existed at this point.
Volume 4: Nothing happens in Volume 4
Volume 5: The only actual victory for Team RWBY, and even then it’s pyrrhic. They stop Cinder from getting the Relic and Lionheart can no longer leak info to Salem, but the Relic is not extremely vulnerable, Haven is functionally destroyed as an academy, and most of Mistral’s huntsmen are still dead from Lionheart’s betrayal, but hey, at least the White Fang is gone.
Volume 6: Nothing really happens in Volume 6 other than travel. They at least kill Adam so that’s a small victory I guess?
Volume 7: The only victory is stopping Cinder from getting the Winter Maiden powers, which is kind of moot since Ironwood is now opposed to team RWBY and co, plus Cinder ends up getting the relics next season anyways.
Volume 8: Team RWBY and Co get their shit kicked in, one of the 4 kingdoms in the world is wiped off the map, several people they like die, and Cinder gets both relics.

Chapter Thirteen - Bridge Over Swift Water (Part II)

The cottage beside the mill was not large, and its low ceilings were packed with all manner of cupboards, shelves, chairs and tables, pressed in against the walls in a maze of well-worn clutter. The result was a rather overcrowded space, and Ren was forced to take more care than usual so as not to bump into anything when they entered, but the hearth was broad, and the smell of cooking filled the air, so it did not take long to settle into a comfortable lull of pleasant talk around the table whilst they waited for their lunch. Ted's wife, a young, slender woman with dark, smiling eyes and shoulder-length fair hair, hurried about the fire busily, stirring and seasoning her pots with a methodical efficiency. A mug arrived for each of them (water for the boys, something stronger for Ted), and they talked for a time of small things, of the weather and the harvest, hoping for a mild winter, idle talk for idle minds. Even Trin seemed to have relaxed in the lazy firelight, though he was more quiet than usual. Ren thought of how scared he had been of the miller as a boy, remembering the fearsome man with his scarred neck and deep voice that had raked their dinner table at the farm with his dark eyes. It was a memory that fit the man beside him about as well as a child’s boot might fit its fathers. He started to feel a little guilty for avoiding him, whenever he visited the farm.
‘Heard you were heading to Overwood, last week.’
Ren blinked, looking up from the fire to find Ted watching him over his mug. He swallowed.
‘Took a cart to the market with grandfather.’
‘How is the old goat?’
Ren hesitated. ‘He’s… he’s well.’
Ted took a swig of his ale, not a little wistfully. ‘Used to live up there, you know. Overwood, I mean. After the soldiering, when the Black Breath took my Da. Coughed up his own lungs, ‘fore it got ‘im. Always was a scrapper. Not easy, losing someone like that.’
Ren swallowed, looking away, and the miller’s eyes softened.
‘Your Ma, too, boy, I know. Damn shame.’ he said apologetically, and Ren decided not to correct him. ‘Long time before I came out here, anyways.’
‘You fought in the war?’ Trin asked tentatively.
‘I fought in the rebellion, boy.’ Ted corrected him. ‘Was only one King, back then.’
Trin swallowed, looking at the floor.
‘But that was a long time ago now. Afore you were born, I reckon. Not a lot of work for soldiers in peacetime. Must have dug half the privies in Overwood before I earned the coin to up sticks.'
‘Earned?’ Werla snorted from beside the fire, cheeks dimpling. ‘Swindled, more like.’
Ren looked over at her. He had always thought her a little young for the old miller. He was well past forty, and with his weathered brow and ugly scar he was hardly an obvious match for a pretty young girl not long from twenty when they had wed a couple of summers back. He wondered, not for the first time, how they had fallen in together to begin with.
‘Now, don't be giving our guests the wrong idea.’ Ted told her, grinning, and the scar on his neck knotted. He turned back to the boys, holding up his hands earnestly. ‘An honest game of chance, I swear it. Northerner, he was, didn't know dice from a pebble.’
Ren and Trin both nodded sagely at his explanation, neither of them knowing one jot about dice, or gambling, or Northerners, for that matter. Werla swept to their rescue, appearing at the miller's shoulder and planting a kiss on his cheek.
‘Swindled.’ she said pointedly.
Ted smiled in spite of himself, shooing her away. She chuckled and turned back to the stew, humming softly to herself.
‘I hear there’s a lot of new folk in town.’ Ted said, turning back to the boys. ‘From up in the Stonelands.’
‘Enough to notice.’ Ren replied, thinking of the unpleasantness on the road. He frowned. ‘Unfriendly types.’
‘Been a while since I made it over that way. Couple of winters back, now.’ He frowned thoughtfully, then smiled in Werla’s direction. ‘A lot can change in two years, though.’
Werla looked up, flashing him a smile, then went back to her stew pot again, humming. The miller paused, scratching at his scar, then gave the boys a curious look. ‘So, then. What brings you out this far?’
Ren lowered his eyes, and Trin shifted uncomfortably beside him. Ted laughed, weathered face creasing into a smile.
‘Come now.’ he told them. ‘Can’t hardly turn you over to your grandfather from here, can I?’
Ren swallowed. ‘We were just out for a ride…’
‘Mister Derin told us never to cross the bridge.’ Trin finished for him, scowling. ‘He said it was too far from the farm. Not safe, he said. So of course that’s exactly where Ren has to go. We’ll be in for it when we get back!’
‘You didn't have to come, Trin.’ Ren told his friend patiently. He thought of his grandfather’s old map, carved with rivers and mountains and cities in dark ink. The Swiftwater wasn’t even big enough to merit a line, and the distance they’d travelled this morning wouldn’t be more than a nails-breadth.
‘Well you didn't tell me where we were going.’ Trin replied, fidgeting nervously. His fingers twisted around a stray tear in his shirt, tugging at it. ‘And besides... Hardly going to let you go running off on your own. Too risky. It's not safe this far from the farm, for you most of all, so they says.’
‘Who’s they?’ Ren asked, scowling.
‘Hector. Your grandfather. And Ma, too! Everyone!’
‘Your Ma doesn’t know everything, Trin.’
‘Still a damn sight more than you!’
‘Easy, boys.’ Ted was smiling, and his scarred neck twisted. ‘I wager the north side of the river is much the same as this one.’
Trin lowered his eyes, and his cheeks reddened. Ren thought of the shadows moving in the trees over the bridge, the way he had fallen when Ted had found him, and started to feel very foolish indeed. His thoughts had been dark, unpredictable, these past few days, since the trip to Overwood. He never had been a good sleeper, but his nights had been more restless than usual, too, his dreams a little thicker with shadows. Shadows with faces, and a hunchback with gold eyes to give them voice. Turning every doorway to the gloom of the fortuneteller’s tent, every flame the silver light of his brazier. He frowned at himself. Just rhymes and empty words. Best not to dwell on it.
‘Food's ready!’ Werla said suddenly from the fire, and a few moments later they had steaming bowls of fragrant brown stew sitting in front of them on the table. Ted carved up some slices of soft, pale bread for them to soak, and they set to eating it all in relative quiet for a time, content with good food and the soft warmth of the fire, and it was not long before all thoughts of the bridge, and the shadows beyond it, had gone entirely from Ren's mind. He found himself staring wearily into his cup, watching idly as the clear water rocked and rolled against the rim, listening to the rumble of the river outside.
‘Won’t turn to ale just by looking at it.’ Ted told him, and he looked up to find the miller looking at him curiously, taking another mouthful of bread. Trin was still quite engaged in his food, and Werla was sipping her mug contentedly, pale hair brushed back behind her ears.
‘What?’
‘Come, now, boy. What’s got you twisted?’ Ted asked, taking sip of his drink.
Ren hesitated. ‘I was thinking about the market.’ He said after a moment, looking up. It was true enough.
‘Ah. Town ain't what it used to be.’ Ted looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, then began rubbing his thumb around the rim of his mug, staring at it. His young wife watched him with a slight frown. ‘All these unsavoury types arriving. You hear the talk, even out here. City folk, some of them, and worse. Heard… there’s talk of Brothers abroad, up in the Westmere. Out in the open, again, like.’ He pressed harder against the mug, thumb turning white. Werla reached out and pulled his hand away, folding it in her own and meeting his eye. Ted frowned, squeezing her hand, and the ugly scar on his neck gleamed. Trin had stopped eating.
‘But the Westmere’s a long way from here, and I ain’t one to be complaining. Got a good roof over my head, and a good living. A good woman, too, and might have a son of my own by next winter, Makers willing.’ He grinned at Werla, putting a hand to her belly, and she smiled, pulling it to her mouth and kissing it softly. ‘Reckon I’m a lucky man.’
Ren smiled at them both, lowering his eyes.
‘Say hello to your folks, for me, boy. Tell your old man I better see his arse over here before the snows.’
Some words of thanks, warm, earnest ones, and one or two more for goodbye, then they were homeward bound again, ponies snorting in the afternoon sun, promises of a return visit ringing in their ears. Ren was left with the distinct feeling that he had misjudged the old miller, scar and all. But it wasn’t long before his thoughts turned towards the rumours he had imparted from the Westmere, his white knuckles pressed against his mug. To Hector’s words in the shadow of the farm hill. To the ugly fortuneteller and his tent of oddities and silver fire. Words whispered in the dark. He’d not mentioned the encounter in the tent to anyone. Not even his grandfather. In truth, he’d been doing his best not to think about it at all, without much success. He frowned, hunching over his saddle.
A mask on fire.
Neither of them spoke for a long while. Trin, for his part, was busy trying to subtly feed Pol the stash of small treats he had smuggled away from the cottage, glancing over at Ren occasionally to make sure he hadn’t noticed. He had, of course, but there was little use in pointing it out.
‘Trin.’ Ren said once they had crested the hill, looking back towards the river-bound cottage in the distance. Trin started and stuck his hand quickly back into his pocket, hiding a scrap of bread.
‘What?'’
‘You heard what Ted said?’ Ren asked. ‘About Brothers?’
Trin frowned. ‘Suppose so.’
Ren was still looking back the way they had come. 'What do you make of it?'
‘Reckon he’s right.’ Trin shrugged. ‘Westmere’s a long way away.’
He hesitated, frowning.
‘But Hector’s been saying it for years. Overwood’s not what it used to be. Strange folk coming and going by night. No safe place for good folk that side of the Swiftwater. Brothers or no.’
‘Grandad says there haven’t been Black Hand this far south in years.’ Ren murmured, still looking back towards the river. ‘Not since we were born, at least.’
‘Wouldn’t pay it any mind. Plenty to worry about without them.’ Trin told him, giving him a serious look. ‘You’ve been acting up more, these past few weeks. Ever since the old man came calling.’
‘Have I?’ Ren scowled, shooting his friend a sideways glance.
‘You know what I think about him.’ Trin told him seriously. ‘Can’t be trusted, that one. And you can’t be taking so many risks. Not with your… Well, you know.’
‘Your ma tell you that, too?’
‘Don’t make it wrong.’ Trin grumbled, turning away in his saddle and trotting off south over the crest of the hill. Ren waited a moment longer, frowning to himself, then followed him reluctantly. The sound of the river was long gone behind him, but he caught one final glimpse the gleaming water before he shook the reins and disappeared finally over the brow of the hill, bound for home.

Chapter Thirteen - Bridge Over Swift Water (Part II)
The cottage beside the mill was not large, and its low ceilings were packed with all manner of cupboards, shelves, chairs and tables, pressed in against the walls in a maze of well-worn clutter. The result was a rather overcrowded space, and Ren was forced to take more care than usual so as not to bump into anything when they entered, but the hearth was broad, and the smell of cooking filled the air, so it did not take long to settle into a comfortable lull of pleasant talk around the ta-ble whilst they waited for their lunch. Ted's wife, a young, slender woman with dark, smiling eyes and shoulder-length fair hair, hurried about the fire busily, stirring and seasoning her pots with a methodical efficiency. A mug arrived for each of them (water for the boys, some-thing stronger for Ted), and they talked for a time of small things, of the weather and the harvest, hoping for a mild winter, idle talk for idle minds.
‘Now, don't be giving our guests the wrong idea.’ Ted told her, grin-ning, and the scar on his neck knotted. He turned back to the boys, holding up his hands earnestly. ‘An honest game of chance, I swear it. Northerner, he was, didn't know dice from a pebble.’
Ren and Trin both nodded sagely at his explanation, neither of them knowing one jot about dice, or gambling, or Northerners, for that mat-ter.
‘Well you didn't tell me where we were going.’ Trin replied, fidget-ing nervously. His fingers twisted around a stray tear in his shirt, tug-ging at it.
‘I wa-ger the north side of the river is much the same as this one.’
He never had been a good sleeper, but his nights had been more restless than usual, too, his dreams a little thicker with shad-ows. Shadows with faces, and a hunchback with gold eyes to give them voice. Turning every doorway to the gloom of the fortuneteller’s tent, every flame the silver light of his brazier. He frowned at himself. Just rhymes and empty words. Best not to dwell on it.
‘Food's ready!’ Werla said suddenly from the fire, and a few mo-ments later they had steaming bowls of fragrant brown stew sitting in front of them on the table.
Trin was still quite engaged in his food, and Werla was sip-ping her mug contentedly, pale hair brushed back behind her ears.
40yo rookie 6 months in..
I got into hvac by happenstance over the winter. I had recently left working for tier 1 auto parts manufacturer doing tool inspection and gage repair for nearly 15 years. I have small children and working 6-7 days a week second and third shift just wasn’t working for me anymore. Well my rental house furnace blower was acting up and it had been replaced less than a year ago. I knew the guy who I had do the work before through a friend. So he sends out his apprentice to replace it and while I’m chatting with him he informs me that it was his last day and that he had just got his degree in logistics and was moving on. I called up his boss man and asked to take his spot. Citing some of my skills and capabilities in learning the trade. I started the next Monday and I’ve really enjoyed most of it so far. It’s just the two of us. Boss man is 10 years my junior and I think that dynamic of him having the skill, knowledge and eagerness to help and teach while also working hard as the young guy he is with the life experience and knowledge I bring seems to work really well for us when coming up with solutions to problems and overall just working together. He gets a lot of really good work. He’s in with the lake community so we’re on all the new builds and servicing all these rich people. We do some smaller commercial stuff. A few restaurants and gyms. Set a few roof tops and such. I feel like because it’s just the two of us I do get exposed to alot of different things. I feel like I’ve been wildly lucky most of the time with service calls because often it’s the first time I’m encountering the issue, but somehow I always figure it out. Its a good feeling when that unit fires up after not 100% knowing if your diagnosis was right. I do enjoy when a customer is fully expecting to have to replace their equipment and when you walk out 30 minutes later, everything is running and they are so happy to be paying that $400 they tip you $100. Anyhow got sent out to do 90% of an install on my own the other day. Did everything but braze and charge the system. (Just haven’t learned those yet) House didn’t have ac prior so new circuit and all. Anyhow I’m really liking the work. But unfortunately I’m often not getting 40 hours. I get extra for service calls which is nice and makes up the difference sometimes. But as of now I’m at $20/hr and no sort of benefits. I felt it acceptable when I started as I knew little. Like I said I have kids and a family to support and I’m needing more. I’d really hate to jump ship and go to another company. Has to be a dozen I could count off the top of my head. But I almost feel like by this time next year I could be leading installs with my own helper and potentially work it out to make some good money. I love the area we work in and our clientele are great. I meet some really awesome people on the lake and even had my son with me on a call after picking him up from school last week. The lady took him down to the lake and played with him while I diagnosed and replace a capacitor. It’s those kind of days that keep me here over looking elsewhere. So I’m trying to do my best to make myself valuable enough to ask for more. I really don’t know what the pay is like for my position anywhere else. But I’m feeling like $25 isn’t to much to ask for. Especially once I learn the refrigerant side of things. For reference I’m in Michigan servicing the Fenton/Grand Blanc area primarily. Just south of Flint. I guess just looking for a little advice. I’ve considered doing the hvac bootcamp class and get my epa cert. it’s like $1500 but I know some local companies hire guys and pay for that class for them. What would you guys do? Stick it out with the smaller guy and try to grow with or jump ship for more stability and benefits?

2023.06.09 15:25 NimbleThor 5 Quick tl;dr iOS Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 179)

Happy Friday, everyone! :) Welcome to my weekly thread of mobile gaming recommendations based on some of the most interesting games I played and that were covered on MiniReview this week. I hope you'll enjoy the read.
Support these posts (and YouTube content + development of MiniReview) on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/NimbleThor <3
This episode includes an awesome old-school RPG NetHack variant, a beautiful arcade bullet-hell shooter, a relaxing puzzle game, a popular chess app, and a casual tower defense game.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 179 weeks ago here.

Let's get to the games:

GnollHack [Game Size: 1.1 GB] (Free)

Genre: RPG / Roguelike - Offline
Orientation: Landscape + Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by JBMessin:
Gnollhack is a fun variant of the famous roguelike “Nethack” designed specifically for mobile. In comparison to the original game, it features numerous quality-of-life changes, both ASCII and graphical tiles for the dungeon floors, and even voice acting.
A major advantage over other Nethack variants is Gnollhack’s large and intuitive UI. The most used commands are available on our main screen, and everything else is just a tap away and presented with clear and noticeable icons. The UI may look more cluttered than most modern mobile games, but it’s a big step up in comparison to many Nethack-based games.
What's also great about Gnollhack is that it's easier in the beginning than it is towards the end, which is completely different from Nethack and its other mobile variants. This makes it perfect for those that aren't familiar with the genre’s unforgiving gameplay and crazy learning curve.
The graphical ground tiles are impressive for a game genre where the archaic ASCII art style is typically preferred. The character and enemy sprites are also well-made and even presented according to creature size, which means larger enemies actually have larger sprites. Lastly, it’s much easier to navigate our inventory in Gnollhack than in most similar games since our weapons, armor, wands, etc. are actually presented visually.
The biggest downside to Gnollhack is its 1+ GB size, which isn’t massive by AAA standards but is ridiculously large for a Nethack variant. It's also heavy on battery usage, although that is to be expected with gameplay where so much is going on at all times.
Gnollhack is completely free without ads or iAPs. Overall, despite its few flaws, it’s a fantastic introduction to the brutality that is Nethack.
App Store Beta (TestFlight): Here

Wavecade [Total Game Size: 221 MB] ($2.99)

Genre: Arcade / Bullet-Hell - Online + Offline
Orientation: Landscape + Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by Solitalker:
Wavecade is a beautiful retro-styled roguelike arcade space shooter where we control the speed of time and destroy waves of incoming space blocks to score as many points as possible.
As we dodge and swerve our way through the 80's retro-inspired neon space, our ship automatically fires at any blocks in sight.
But this is where it gets interesting, because if we pull our ship toward the bottom of the screen, time slows down, allowing us to precisely maneuver away from projectiles and environmental space hazards. Pushing forward toward the top of the screen speeds up time beyond 100%, with greater points and rewards the faster we’re traveling.
After each run, experience gained unlocks new ranks that let us customize our ship. Cosmetics and new abilities can be configured and equipped before starting a new run, and even the appearance of the blocks we're facing can be customized to our liking.
A wide variety of powerups and weapons can be found throughout each run, leading to some wonderfully overpowered moments of total destruction. But some buffs and abilities are so effective that blocks don’t even make it on screen before they're destroyed, which is a little disappointing since we don't get to see the vibrant neon particle-filled explosions.
The touch controls can be frustrating at times. By default, we tap and drag our ship around manually, but this leaves our ship and the area directly around it hidden by our finger during play. Thankfully, the ship can be offset in the settings, or a virtual joystick can be enabled.
The visual and audio experience of Wavecade is incredibly satisfying, and its fantastic soundtrack perfectly fits the aesthetics.
For $2.99 on iOS with no additional monetization, it’s a very enjoyable arcade shoot ‘em up with relatively quick runs and a rewarding high-score system.

Down in Bermuda [Game Size: 513 MB] ($5.99)

Genre: Puzzle / Casual - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review by AlexSem:
Down in Bermuda is a cute isometric puzzle adventure from the creators of “Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise”, where we explore the mysteries of a secluded island by participating in a series of brain-testing puzzle activities.
Each level consists of a large 3D island that we can freely observe from all sides in search of interactive objects, mini-games, and puzzle clues. We need to click, swipe, and drag said objects in a specific sequence to complete each puzzle, and the key to success lies in attentiveness, a bit of luck, and sometimes clicking all the suspicious spots in the hope that something meaningful happens.
We also get to meet local inhabitants and help them with their problems – all while searching for a way to escape the island. The puzzles in each scene can be solved in any order, but we still need to finish certain scenarios to proceed in the game.
A huge portion of the gameplay revolves around finding and gathering all the glowing stars hidden in each level. While we can use a handy star map to easily locate them, there is a special achievement if we manage to succeed without its help.
We may also find special keys used to open advanced parts of the puzzles on previous islands, so a bit of backtracking is required to complete the game 100%. Other than that, the game progresses in a linear fashion, which can be disappointing for hardcore puzzle fans, but is perfect for casual play.
Down in Bermuda is a premium game without ads or iAPs that costs $5.99 on iOS. Despite being rather short, it provides an engaging puzzle-solving experience that I’m sure anyone fond of high-quality mobile adventure games will appreciate.

lichess [Game Size: 137 MB] (Free)

Genre: Board / Casual / Chess - Online + Offline
Orientation: Portrait + Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by jurij:
lichess is a free open-source chess app with zero ads and nothing hidden behind a paywall.
The app is fast and simple. We can start a game in seconds, and since there are very few options and menus, everything is centered around actually playing. It features several online and offline chess variations, but in comparison to the Chess.com app or the website version of lichess, it still lacks several advanced features.
We also have access to puzzles, game lessons, and some game analysis options, but all of this works much better in the website version.
lichess is the second most popular chess platform after Chess.com, and if you love chess, you probably already have both installed. lichess is just a tad more outdated overall, but at least we don’t have to live with any paywalled features.
The lichess mobile app is a few years behind the website version in terms of usability – in large part because the mostly volunteer team managing the game is just not focused on the mobile version for some reason. A great example of how rudimentary some parts of the app are is the extremely clunky board editor that looks like it was made in a day and then never updated.
Ultimately, it’s a simple but fully free chess app for serious players that is amazing for starting fast bullet and blitz games. It lacks functionality and varied bots but has everything else you need for a great chess experience.

Arrow War (Game Size: 130 MB] (Free)

Genre: Tower Defense / Casual - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Little (semi-idle)
tl;dr review by NimbleThor:
Arrow War is a casual and silly castle defense game where we manage a group of archers firing arrows at the waves of incoming enemies that try to seize our tower.
Starting with just a single archer, we must equip it with new bows, upgrade existing ones, enhance the skills of the bow, and much more to grow stronger. As we progress, we unlock more archers, each of which we need to manage in the same way.
Every wave takes a few minutes to complete, after which we’re taken back to our base, where we can upgrade our team in different ways, start the next wave, or play other game modes.
During combat, our archers automatically aim at the nearest enemies, while we strategically trigger their skills. So the combat isn’t idle, but it’s an ideal game to play while watching TV or doing something else.
There are a ton of ways to upgrade our archers and castle wall, lots of fun bows to unlock, quests to complete, and areas around our castle to capture so they automatically produce resources for us. Unfortunately, the combat is always the same across all the game modes.
The game features a premium currency, but we earn plenty of it for free, allowing us to buy things such as auto-aim for our main archer. There is technically also an energy system, but we gain so much of it that it’s rarely ever felt. Overall, the progression is nicely balanced for free players, and I haven’t experienced any paywalls.
Unfortunately, the game doesn’t utilize the wide screens of modern smartphones.
Arrow War monetizes via incentivized ads, a few forced ads, and iAPs to grow stronger faster. The iAPs aren’t necessary to progress, but the 5-second forced ads may become annoying. Some of the iAPs remove these ads.

2023.06.09 15:24 catscatsscatss Contemplating divorce

25F married to 28M for 9 months. I feel very unhappy, unloved and alone. I was 17 when I met him and he was 20, I have been with him ever since, married him at 24.
To give you some context without writing a novel, he works in finance and travels A LOT for work. I rarely see him and have now grown fond of being alone at home. Because our schedules are so different we really only get the weekends together, and even then he makes plans with his friends or goes golfing, leaving me alone. I don’t think he’s romantic, he even forgot to buy me flowers for my birthday and only did because I cried about it. For Valentine’s Day I had to remind him and tell him what to get me because otherwise he doesn’t get anything. My sex life is completely nonexistent. We haven’t been intimate in months, I can’t even tell you when the last time was probably in the winter. He’s also gained a tremendous amount of weight which has turned me off, as awful as that sounds it just has. I am someone who eats clean and works out everyday. I find health important and he doesn’t care ever since we got married.
I will say I am financially dependent on him, he makes a lot of money, he pays all of our bills. With my teacher salary I would never be able to afford everything we have on my own. So I fear being financially unstable. I also fear being single, starting a new life completely different. I never had the chance to date around or be single since right before him I had a boyfriend in high school. I feel liberated when he’s away, I feel tied down when he’s home. I feel like if I’m feeling bored now 9 months in, I don’t think it will improve.
Please anyone who has gone through a divorce or is going through one, when did you know this was the right decision? How do you know? What can I do to make sure this is the correct decision?

Hi everyone! So I haven’t done any cutting on my hydrangeas in over a year and they’re not blooming. I did have to deal with winter kill and I fertilized them late, so I’m wondering if that could be it. Any chance they bloom this year? The leaves look absolutely beautiful but there aren’t any buds.

TL;DR I had an argument with my best friend of 9 years over text and she passed out due to that. She also had her finals on that day which I didn’t know of. I accused her of being selfish and prioritising studying over me every time.
I had a fight with my (f24) friend (f21) of 9 years. I got extremely angry at her when I learned that she won’t be able to go with me on a 3-week long vacation (we made plans together). I haven’t seen her in person since January. She’s currently in another country and she’s already bought a ticket to the destination. However, she wants to leave me there after 5-6 days because she wants to get some rest before next academic year at home.
I kind of remembered all the occasions when she prioritised her studies and accused her of being a selfish person. She didn’t even call me on my birthday this year. She got so nervous that she passed out at a university library shortly after that (she told me that).
Some backstory for context.
When I was in my sophomore year at college we had our first fight. The problem was that she could not spend time with me due to her upcoming exams. I’ve never failed to make time for her although I also had to pass exams. We made up, she didn’t get into her dream school, but she still got enrolled into one of the top schools in our country. I also study at a university which is quite renown and extremely hard to get into. This information is essential here. We both have sizeable academic workload and little spare time.
Ever since then I hardly saw her. We usually meet once a month and each time it’s on her terms only. I always stick to her preferred leisure time activities, i.e. riding a bicycle although I can hardly do that.
I suffer from headaches and it’s really easy to provoke one and she knows that. The last time we went cycling I was so effed up at the end I literally threw up. She’s also super into long walks and by long I mean that one such walk can last 5-6 hours no matter what the weather. It’s also super easy for me to catch a cold so each time we go for a walk in winteautumn I fall ill afterwards.
We grew apart last year. She was preoccupied with her studies and applying to a study abroad program. We would still spend some time together but it’s virtually impossible to have a nice conversation when you’re walking. Plus she would be late for half an hour / an hour due to her studies. I would still consider her my best friend, we even wear rings as a symbol of our friendship.
I don’t understand anything at this point and it seems to me now that I’m the asshole but I still feel angry at her for avoiding me
AITA?

2023.06.09 14:41 ebbsdoesntflow [Real] (6/9/23) Childhood Memories

“Hope is my philosophy; just needs days in which to be…love of life means hope for me…” John David
Dear Diary,
When I was a child, I used to wish/dream of living in a very cold, winter setting… in a tent. …alone. …with nothing but a man-made fire to warm my body and a blanket wrapped around my shoulders. Sometimes kind strangers would come by and bring me things that I was unable to obtain on my own but mostly, I was self sufficient.
Whenever I found myself alone, I would allow my mind to escape to this place of what I imagined to be safety.
Other times, when I would take a bath in our very tiny bathroom, I would imagine what it would be like to live alone. I could do it, I thought! I could do it and I could be happy doing it. This would inspire an entirely new daydream of living in a space the size of a very small bathroom. Without rationalization, of course, my very young brain imagined a total transformation of that very small bathroom. I could… hang a curtain around the toilet! I would convert the bathtub into a bed at night. I would make the counter top a kitchen counter with one of those little portable electric stove top burners and a microwave and I’d learn to cook! I’d take cabinet space and divide it between clothes/kitchen/bathroom. I’d get a little bar stool and put it next to the counter and use that as a table, too. I’d use the space beneath the counter for storage. I’d heat it during winter with one of those small space electric space heaters. I could use towels for blankets!
Suddenly, my tiny little bathroom was no longer attached to a house, but a tiny little house of its own; My own little secret safe- haven that I never told anyone about. I never wanted to leave. I wanted to take baths all the time and escape to that place of solitude where no one could find me.
I still find it perplexing when I think back on what comfort this …escape? brought me as such a small child. Only in recent years, have I even begun to dig into why my small heart would even dream of living in such poverty; poverty that I clearly didn’t even begin to understand yet.
I don’t know why I’m sharing this here. I’ve quite literally never shared this with anyone, but I do think it may play a small role in the person I am now; the person I grew up to be. I look back on that small child with love. I don’t feel bad about what I day-dreamed. I also don’t think it’s normal, but as a self-sufficient and successful individual now, I am thankful for that strong-willed child who was just a little bit different than the rest.
Xx

2023.06.09 14:23 DragonflyRemarkable3 Reliable Family Car

I am looking for a 2nd reliable family car. I was pre-approved for $50k but I truly want to stay in the $30-35k range. My fiancé is moving in and he is currently borrowing his sibling’s vehicle, and they’re coming back from college.
I haven’t bought a new car since 2018 when I bought my 2018 rav4 (base) during Toyotathon for $18k (I put money down) at 3.9%…..
I’m a little sticker shocked at the cost of cars these days.
I love my rav4 but do find it to be a tad small with all four of us. I have a 10yr old and a 4yr old. So, one forward facing car seat. We also have three large dog breeds that we sometimes have to tote around for vet appointments and vacations (Golden retriever, Husky, and GSD).
We take about 2 vacations a year to see family in Florida.
My idea is that if I don’t have all the bells and whistles now… if I don’t get them, I won’t really know what I’m missing lol. I also hate the new all digital infotainment centers.
I’ve been looking at a 2018 Chevy Tahoe, 2020 Toyota 4Runner and the 2022 Subaru Forester.
I’ve been leaning towards the Tahoe or the forester but I a unfamiliar with their reliability. I used to have a Chevy Sonic and HATED IT (money pit) so I’m a little jaded by Chevy lol.
