2023.06.09 20:46 tasdiqbashar Hogwarts Legacy Should Have Been a Linear Open World [Critique]
I want to preface by stating that I thoroughly enjoyed this game and I understand the developers definitely scrapped a lot of the choices, consequences, features, and story pathways to finish development in a feasible time. However, in an ideal scenario I wish the developers would've completely scrapped the dialogue "choices", building your own character, and hundreds of tedious Merlin trials and other similar activities for the sole reason of boosting play time. Instead, I would've much preferred well-crafted, named main character that was actually memorable, no dialogue choices with just the story the developers wanted to tell, and a much denser linear open world similar GOW Ragnarok that doesn't just drag on the play time. I think I still get nightmares about the Alohomora puzzles and the Merlin Trial animations.
What is building a legacy?
My initial problem is with the title of the game. I never wanted to be myself in Hogwarts. I don't want to build my legacy. No matter how many games have tried to do this, I have never actually felt I was actually myself in these character creators for games. When I play a game and think about legacies, I think of the adventures and funny quips of Nathan Drake, the anger and growth of Kratos, enigmatic soldier of Master Chief, the voice of Max Payne, the stature of Geralt of Rivia, roundhouse kicks from Leon Kennedy. For goodness sake, I think of Harry freaking Potter when I think of Harry Potter. I wanted a well-crafted character (obviously it doesn't have to be Harry) with a great arc over multiple sequels. Even Star Wars for example built up Cal Kestis in the Respawn games. I was excited about what would happen to Cal in the sequel. But after playing Hogwarts, I have no connection to the Main Character who is supposedly supposed to be me and I have no interest in a sequel regarding this character. You would think being yourself would be most engaging, but it never really is. We go to entertainment to escape ourselves, not be ourselves. I can build a legacy in real life not in a game.
Morality and Consequence
SuckerPuch known for Sly, Infamous, and Ghost of Tsushima made a loved morality system in their Infamous series with different story pathways, endings, consequences. If you are going to have to have choices, you need to be able to shape your character and the consequences of each choice need to be nuanced. In Hogwarts Legacy, the choices have zero impact. At first I was incredibly engaged to the Sebastian missions; however, once I realized my choices didn't matter and Seb's uncle would die no matter what I lost all immersion. I would've rather had no choices at all. Ghost of Tsushima perfected this idea. GoT could've easily had a morality system (and SuckerPunch is well known for it) between being the Ghost and the Samurai, but instead SuckerPunch decided to tell the story of Jin Sakai the way they wanted it to be told without choices. Although it may have been better for morality, I respect SuckerPunch for drawing the line at a well-told linear story with true character motivations and arcs rather than half baking a morality system and dialogue choices like Hogwarts Legacy with no discernible main character.
Side Quests and Open World
I would've appreciated a toned down, denser semi-open world similar to GOW Ragnarok with enjoyable not infinite activities. It would've been so easy, the castle is absolutely gorgeous, Hogsmeade is stunning, and they could've just filled the surrounding of Hogwarts with a couple dense, beautiful Hamlets similar to the size of Hogsmeade. It didn't need to be this massive, empty open world. The enemy camps could've also been so much grander if they just decided to focus a good 15 encampments of a larger scale. Even if they didn't change the smaller encampments, if the game had an ounce of enemy variation I would've enjoyed these fights a bit more. Don't even get me started on the Merlin Trials, Balloons, Alohomora puzzles, and Moons. The animations are so useless and the complaints have been so vocal that I can't fathom as to how it hasn't been patched. To make it worse, there is simply no reward for completing several of these side activities. The side missions were extremely boring and fetch questy outside of the relationship quests and the PlayStation exclusive quest.
Characters and Story
When I think of Harry Potter, I think of the relationship between Harry, Ron and Hermione. I think of the animosity with Draco and the Slytherins. I think of smaller characters like Neville, Ginny, Seamus. I think of monumental, unforgettable villains like Voldemort. I think of enigmatic, brutal professors like Snape. For the most part I feel like we got none of that. I wish we had a trio of friends that were well built: Poppy and Natty just feel so half assed and boring. Sebastian was the only interesting character but even then I never got the wholesome feeling of high quality cutscenes in the great hall with close friends that actually had well written dialogue. I thought we would have a rivalry similar to Draco through Seb but he just becomes your friend and is always nice. Another thing everyone is ALWAYS nice. There is no Snape like professor who bullies you. Ranrok has a terrible origin story with uninspired motivations that the player can't relate to. If you want to make me care about Goblins, you have to actually show me their struggles and evil side of wizardkind. The story missions are uninspired, and super repetitive. Especially the first two trials. I really loved the third trial though.
TLDR
I've seen a lot of people mention that they wanted Hogwarts Legacy to be larger scale and "build your legacy", but I honestly believe it would have much better game if it was scaled down and focused to a linear semi-open world with true and engaging main and side characters, a denser world with less but more engaging activities, and a more thought out story component. This is just a critique, I didn't mention a lot of what I loved about this game and would rate it an 7.5-8/10.

To clarify, when I say "young" I mean under 20, I understand that at 25 I am not "old"
I've been hooking up with this woman (we will call her O) for like 6 weeks and 1/2 the time I go to her place. O has a sub leaser in her apartment rn and the subleaser is a 19 y/o trans woman (I'll call her B), for reference I'm 25 and O is 22.
B is generally chill, so when O said she would be having some friends over for her 19th birthday while I was also over I wasn't too worried about it. To my shock, in walks like 3 people who DEFINITELY look to be in highschool, all looking sterotypicaly like midwestern, lgbt teens. I was a little uncomfortable because I'm 25, but it's not like I can make the rules in their home. But I was in a group so I didn't feel as creepy
O and I were sitting in the living room when they came in, so of course B introduced us. 2 of the people I was introduced to were trans, one trans masc and one a trans man, both pre T. When I introduced myself they were nice and there were no problems.
We all got to talking in the living room and the trans man (I'll call him S) was sitting next to me and in my peripheral vision I saw him eyeing me, particularly my shoulders. I was wearing a muscle T because MN has been so hot and humid and you could see a part of my binder
All of a sudden S said to me
"Omg you're a trans man?! I'm sorry I saw your binder and just was surprised!"
Then of course all eyes are on me, the only one in the group that knew I was trans was O, obviously. Of course the convo had to start centering around me being trans and them asking why I didn't say anything, asking me questions about my transition and stuff.
They didn't get why I was annoyed and didn't want to answer questions. They all didn't see the problem with what happened because, they're all lgbt, so it's "fine". O saw I was getting uncomfortable so we went to her room and she apologized
I just don't get why he as a trans man thought it was ok to just call me out like that. I obviously didn't say anything the entire time the group was talking about lgbt topics so obviously I'm trying to be stealth. I didn't mention anything about him being trans even though it's obvious (introduced to me with an obviously male name and friends only used he/him, but he's pre T so looks like a "tomboy" and sounds/"acts" like a woman), I just treated him as though he was a man and didn't mention his appearance.
And this is not the only time I've been around teen trans people that do this. I with at least 2 trans men regularly for work. One is a beer rep and the other is a regular at the bar, both seem to be at least 30. We have given each other a "knowing look" but we have never said anything. I met a friends boyfriend and we gave each other "a look" but we didn't say anything, he was 23.
Maybe any teens on this sub have some insight, but I just don't get how the vibe around outing someone else has changed so much in like 3-5 years. I'm still gen Z, I'm not that old, yet high schoolers/teen adults from the same generation as me will out me at random times.

Are parents just not raising people to be reliable anymore? Goodness gracious everyone is so flakey these days. My Gen Z friends and even some Millennials agree to do things and then drop out at the last minute. If something better shows up or more fun in their eyes then they make up excuses to cop out. I've been mulling this idea of a fanfic in which dragons start hatching again or someone hatches dragons during the reign of Aegon the Unworthy.
Aegon the Unworthy is still Unworthy, and ends up giving Daemon a dragon along with the sword. Meaning the Blackfyre rebellion become the Second Dance of the Dragons.
The major theme of such a story would be, "Does history repeat itself", "Are people doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past."
I haven't decided yet, whether I should just make it strictly canon; in which a canon character like Mya Rivers or Naerys is the one who hatches dragons or the start hatching on their own.
Perhaps it's a crossover in which a reborn harry potter or morgan le fay is the one who brings back dragons.
A self-insert, in which an SI canon character is able to hatch them by using canon magic.

I'm pretty excited and I want to discuss this with others. Obviously they'll start from first year, so they'll be casting kids as the golden and silver trios. I hope they cast actual 11 year olds. That way, as each season/year gets released every year, we'll have kids playing their actual age, which is always neat to me..
Here's a few things i really hope they do: - Not age Harry's parents so much. A big part of the grief was that they died so young and never saw their son grow up. - Have Peeves - Have Winky and other characters like Ludo Bagman - Give better details of backstories of characters and how things work - Not hand off all of Ron's lines to Hermione - Make Ginny better as a character, and have better Ginny-Harry and Ron-Hermione romance. Ginny is a sassy redhead who is way too population, and also pretty brave and strong. She deserves better than her entire personality being about Harry. - Ginny's character in book 6 and 7, especially when she tells Harry about how she was the one to be controlled by LV in her first year. - No shoelaces and biscuits, please. - Dumbledore to be truer to the amused, light hearted character he is in the books, who turns into a fearsome wizard when he duels. Also show slight hint of his background from the start. Like when Harry asks him what he sees in the mirror of erised - I have no interest in seeing Hermione being pushed as a pairing with Harry - Include smaller moments and plots, like Ron shielding Harry in book 3, Harry giving his tournament winnings to the twins, Sirius and Molly arguing about Harry, Cho's friend (forgot her name), Mcgonagall's famous "Have biscuit, Potter" and "It unscrews the other way." etc. The smaller things were a big part of the magical world. - Show how amazing Ron and Harry's friendship was, and how kind the Weasleys were to Harry - Young Lily's eyes are GREEN
