2023.03.23 09:02 Deadlytink Why? The big question
I haven't told anyone really as no one in my life knows I use. But I want to get it off.my chest. I'm a good girl, high IQ college single mom of 3. Well while working out (cuz we can't be fat) at 4am, then 6am get kids up and ready, 730am off to.school and work, work all day, 4pm get kids go home, cook dinner the second I running the door to be in my college class by 6pm. On nights I didn't have college I taught a zumba class during this time. In college from 6pm -10pm kids r being assholes etc. (Normal) Then 10pm-1130pm homework
Start over 5 days a week
Weekends were scrub the house, adventures, time with kids, shopping, meal prerp....
See the pattern...
No me time... 6 months of asking family and friends to help with kids or cooking a meal I buy or even to just listen... no one helped. And nobody daddy not in life for kids... it's all me and no child support.
So i started snorting cocaine. I had focus and needed less sleep.. Well a guy a night out and a syringe later in hooked on it IV
IN 4 MONTHS i lost my job, stopped going to the gym, and i chased the dragon so hard i lost myself
. This was May 2022
I got clean
Now Marcb 2023 I'm back but not coke My gma is immobile and requires care. (She takes it to far) I have to lift her, feed her,.dress her, bather her, and listen to he yell and scream in pain all day and night.. I have 3 kids still And my last semester before.my bachelor's degree
I didn't wanna be back I love the feeling (more of the coke) But not enough to be here
100% sober I was getting maybe 2hours of sleep in 48hours. Using I can stay awake longer and when I do crash asleep it's hard and feels amazing and a break from her screaming and yelling and complaining
FYI She was diagnosed narcissistic schizophrenia recently after years of mental abuse from her I treat like my gma even though she still abuses me

2023.03.23 08:45 Neon-Lemon Do I wish her a happy birthday?
This is pretty long, and more of a vent than looking for any advice. 😂
We've been NC for a little over a month now. I cut her off because she became aloof, indecisive, and outright distant in the last month leading up to the breakup. I wanted a serious relationship and she didn't. This is a girl I've known since we were very young; a friendship going back to the year 2000. We both also married young (to separate spouses), where we naturally lost touch afterwards. I always really liked her, and I knew even then that she liked me, but we were also committed to our then-relationships to the people we were gonna marry.
We reconnected almost 2 years ago. She popped up on my Instagram out of nowhere, and it was so great to catch up after all those years. I found out her mother had just died of cancer, and she had divorced in 2020. I got divorced in 2019. In the beginning we regularly shared our sorrows and the pains of divorcing. But I never thought of pursuing her at that point in time, I think because I was still working through my own issues post-divorce as a single man for the first time since my late teens.
Then things settled and we'd have the occasional chat, but that was it. Several months would go by between DMs. It went on like that until last summer (July 2022). We started chatting every day, at all hours. We'd talk about anything and everything. Fast-forward to September, and I was smitten at that point. This was the same girl who fascinated me in our youth, but now we were fully-grown adults and found even more in common with each other than we ever knew before - similar interests, life goals, dreams. I professed my love for her in a lengthy email.
(I should add that we live in different US states in present day, so all communication has been online or phone)
She took it all kindly, and even said she knew what the email was going to be about as soon as she started reading it. But, she declined and said her life was a mess, she'd be a lot of work, felt like she couldn't fulfill the needs and desires I wanted in a woman, etc. She did explain that her ex-husband was also emotionally abusive and bipolar, which led to her initiating her divorce. I understood that maybe she was still dealing with that past trauma. She also has a great job that she didn't want to leave, even though I said I'd move to be closer to her in a heartbeat (I'm a freelancer so physical location is no problem for me). But, I'm also not stupid, so I took all this as maybe she's just not interested and was letting me down gently. Sucks, but what could I do?
We kept frequently chatting daily though, even though she knew I was in love with her. The chats got to a point later in the fall where we were basically sexting, almost nightly. I had never sexted in my life, so it was exciting. Yet, she didn't want to start a relationship. She would keep saying, if she could get over her issues, that she would choose me in a heartbeat. She also told me on multiple occasions that she'd never felt a deeper connection with any other person in her life but me. I felt the same, knowing our long history.
In that time, going into December, of sexting and talking about everything as it became our routine thing, she would also get a little distant and I'd get upset and then we wouldn't chat for a few days. I wouldn't answer her messages right away, and then she'd blast me with a dozen texts in a row wondering why I wasn't responding. She would get paranoid about it. And going silent on my end wasn't to cause her frustration, but to protect my own fragile heart from being hurt even more. I know that's not a healthy way to handle that kind of situation, but that's how I did it. We'd soon make up and everything was back as it was before. I didn't want to keep pressing her on whether or not she'd change her mind.
Now get to Valentine's Day last month. We had a nasty blizzard, one of the worst I'd ever experienced in my life. My parents and I were driving home from a live stand-up show about an hour away. Forecasts said the blizzard would be moving in by midnight that night, so we were aware and drive home most of the way with no weather issues. But the wind started picking up and that caused a lot of the fresh snow to start blowing around. We were literally 12 miles away from my parents' house around 10pm when visibility went to zero. You couldn't see the road because it was completely covered. We ended up going into the ditch and getting stuck in the snow. All highways were closed and again, the winds were so strong that you could barely see 5 feet in front of you. Not to mention the wind chill was in the -25°-30°F range and feeling the snow hit your face outside was like a sandblaster. Long story short, I thought I was gonna die that night. Like real, actual danger was happening and my parents and I were gonna freeze to death. Even with extra clothes and a winter survival kit, things got more dire by the hour. There was no way for the highway patrol to reach us until about 5am that morning. We abandoned the car and got in the back seat of the officer's vehicle, and even then it took the officer close to two hours (still zero visibility conditions) to drive us to a shelter at the closest small town, about 1.5 miles back. By morning, the storm had passed and we were given a ride home, as every single vehicle on the highway had to be towed. We'd worry about that later.
In that time while we were left freezing in the car, I texted her about the situation, and how serious it was. I halfway joked that if she didn't hear from me again, that I had frozen solid like a Mt. Everest climber. She was obviously concerned and kept checking in with me. Part of the conversation shifted to wishing each other a happy Valentine's Day, despite my situation. Then I also half joked and asked her that if I survived the night, could we finally be together? Her exact reply was, "I don't know."
Not that I was using my near-death experience to earn points with her. But in that very moment (as my parents and I tried to not get frostbite/not fall asleep/not accidentally breathe in trapped carbon monoxide), I realized that even then she wouldn't want to be with me. So I decided I couldn't do this anymore. All my pining for her all these months is never gonna go anywhere, and I can't keep waiting. Unrequited.
By that weekend, I told her a farewell, said something eloquent like I can't keep waiting for her door to open up for me, and then deleted everything and blocked her on everything. I still think about her all day long, because I really did/do still love her. The tears aren't as frequent as they were a few weeks ago, but I still feel massive heartbreak and depression today. And yeah, I know it's only been a month.
It's her birthday later this week. I know it's silly but I keep thinking about reaching out and wishing her a happy birthday. Even if it's just an email with those two words only. My birthday is in October, and she sent me fresh flowers. So I had even thought of doing that too. But I know, deep down, that the NC should stay put.
Maybe she just liked the attention all that time.

2023.03.23 06:35 Entire-Secretary9051 Does ADD/ADHD excuse bad behavior?
tl;dr Our friend group collectively dislikes one of our members for their constant bad behavior. This person often blames all their actions on their ADHD; says they didn’t mean whatever bad action they’ve done, and that it’s all due to their impulsivity. I really recommend you read all because all the events are important to the question we’re asking: Does ADHD excuse their behavior mentioned below?
In August of 2022, I (F16) started my 10th year of school. I started with my friend Alpha (F15). Before the school year started, she told me that her friend, Nicole (F16), would be joining us at our school too. I have heard of Nicole before because she was best friends with one of my old friends from 8th grade. When the school year started, the first couple of weeks I had not met Nicole yet, I had seen her in the halls with Alpha trying to talk to her- but Nicole ignored Alpha in the halls or she was always on her phone- When I finally met her 3 weeks into the school year, she made us meet her somewhere kind of discreet in the school- acting as if she was embarrassed to be seen with us. When we finally found her she seemed nice enough. Another week had passed with Nicole joining our friend group, which now consisted of Alpha, Nicole, Ava (F16), Kaylei (F16), and I and it was Alphas birthday. Kaylei and I each made her some dessert and brought it to school and gave it to her at lunch, when Nicole saw this she straight up asked “Why are you giving her these gifts” and when we explained it was her birthday all she said was “Oh”. Nicole and Alpha have been friends since the 6th grade, so it was a little weird that she didn’t know her birthday- but Alpha did not think it was a big deal. Shortly after this, Alpha and I found out why Nicole all of the sudden joined our friend group, Nicole had fat shamed this one girl who was in her old friend group and didn’t apologize. You might be wondering how we know this, well her old friend group, which was pretty big and “popular” was giving us the biggest death stares- literally staring us down in the halls just for being seen with her-( and also Nicole got her hair dragged by one of the people from her old group). We obviously didn’t like these death stares but there was literally nothing we could do except resent her for her behavior. She also blamed this incident on one of her guy friends, Cannon so she never really apologized. These death stares and dirty looks from that group continued for awhile until it kind of dissipated but it was still quite obvious that some people still held it against us.
Nicole sees me talking on the friend group’s group chat, and begs to be included. Nicole apparently thinks she’s apart of the friend group just because she’s friends with Alpha and has no one else to go to. Everyone is really uncomfortable with Nicole, so I take it upon myself to make a new group chat without her. I made the group chat “bad biddies 2.0”, since the first group chat was just “bad biddies”. Nicole tells us she hates that we made group chats without her, so we finally make a new group chat with Nicole and named it “bad biddies 3.0”. Around this time we also made a new friend Sophia (F16) who Alpha and I have both known from previous years and we made a group chat with the three of us called “haters 4L” this will become important. In October, Alpha confronts Nicole because Alpha quite literally cannot tolerate Nicole anymore. Nicole makes a bunch of excuses for herself, and we all made the mistake of letting Nicole think her annoying actions are okay by forgiving her. In November, Nicole constantly asks Alpha to log into Nicole’s snapchat for her since Nicole’s cellular doesn’t work. Alpha does this because whatever, and accidentally presses on one of the snaps Nicole’s guy friend sent. The whole conversation is them saying the n word and f slur religiously. Keep in mind, Nicole knows the n word and f slur are horrible to say. We confront Nicole about this, and she acts like it’s not a big deal. Alpha tells her not to say it anymore, and Nicole says she won’t. The group makes the mistake again of tolerating her bad actions. Fast forward to January 2023, our group has a little disagreement about how much we should pay for gas money. Sophia, Alpha, Nicole, and I make a group chat without the driver who demands money to ask if we think the prices are fair. We do not talk shit about the driver in any way, the sole purpose of this group chat was just to clarify some stuff before maturely talking to the driver. Nicole basically goes on this rant about how hurt Ava, the driver, must feel because we made a group chat without her, and proceeds to say how she “knows what it feels like to have group chats excluding her”. She tells Ava what we’re saying in this nameless group chat, and convinces Ava we’re talking shit. Ava from this point on distances herself from the group chat but Nicole and Ava are all of the sudden closer then ever before. They start hanging out bi-weekly without inviting any of the other group members. As Nicole and Ava are hanging out so much, Sophia, Alpha, and I decide we can hang out too and get together occasionally. When Nicole finds out about this she cant believe it or something, she blames us like we are the bad guys and that we have done something wrong because we haven’t invited her to things, which is just not true, we have invited her to see the hit movie “Cocaine Bear” and she just wasn’t even interested until the day before we went and made this huge deal about how we from now on cant hang out without inviting everyone from the group (terrible idea in my opinion but whatever). We all show up our end of the bargain, except one person, Nicole! Nicole continues to hang out with Ava without inviting anyone else and reprimands us for our hanging out alone even though our plans were last minute and they plants were made during the week so they can go on the weekends. Backtracking to Cannon, Cannon has made several remakes calling me fat in front of Nicole, and she does nothing. Alpha and I tell her that we don’t feel comfortable with her being friends with someone like that and she said she wouldn’t talk to him anymore. This too was a lie and we have actually caught them walking together in the halls and as soon as she saw us she stepped away from him and mouthed “oh shit”. We forgive her for this incident and she promised it would never happen again. One of my other friends from one of my classes has told me that they do still indeed talk like they are friends and that they do talk a lot. This was quite recent and that was the straw that broke the camels back and a sort of fight ensued where we tried to drop Nicole from our friend group but we didn’t, and couldn’t, because she started to cry and say how her feelings aren’t being taken into account and how her ADD makes her do things, which my friends and I have all came to a conclusion that ADD cant be blamed for your bad behavior, though that may be a little closed minded to assume. All of this and much more has led to such a big drift in the friendship and we have lost out on so many opportunities to bond as a friends between Alpha, Sophia, and I because we were too worried how Nicole would feel. Whenever we try dropping her she says she will change but saying you’re going to change without actually changing is just manipulation and I think thats all Nicole is doing to us. I would also like to mention that Nicole is deathly afraid of being alone, like to the point that she makes us go out of her way to pick her up from a bathroom across the school because she’s “afraid she’s going to get dragged again” and I think that if that is the problem you should reevaluate who you are and what you are doing wrong to piss so many people off. Alpha also mentions how bad it is for her mental health to be around someone who constantly pulls her into drama, yet Nicole doesn’t get the hint. Is ADHD really gonna excuse all the stuff Nicole has done? Are we justified in not liking her? How can I even interact with someone that won’t get the obvious hints we want to drop her?

2023.03.23 05:42 JulieGuru Mystery in recent Ancestry DNA Results...
Hi folks,
I just got my Ancestry DNA results last weekend. For the most part, everything was as I expected and I could easily distinguish my mother from my father, even though neither have done a test themselves.
A question arose when reviewing the DNA inherited from my father, as it was primarily Scottish (which tracks) and then I had 13% Irish DNA from him as well. This does not track.
Three of my dad's grandparents were from Scotland. I've been able to trace them all back to my 4x great-grandparents on those three branches and I'm confident in those trees, plus the ThruLines tool at Ancestry is showing me matches from various ancestors in all of those trees.
However, my dad's dad's dad was born in London and going back 3+ generations from that, everyone is English save a couple of 3x great-grandparents who were born in Ireland. Still, that would typically make my great-grandfather around ~25% Irish, my grandfather about 12.5% Irish, my dad about 6.25% Irish and me about 3% Irish. I know. It's random. But I think 13% or so for me seems very high.
Then, a few years ago, I realized that my grandfather was born 3 years before my great-grandparents married. I even went to the Ontario Archives to make sure that my great-grandfather was listed as "father" for my grandfather. And he was. But I still find it odd that in 1914 in Canada, they weren't married. (They lied about it and said they'd married in England in 1911, but both of them had come to Canada in 1911 and there's no record of a marriage in England that I can find.)
As such, I'm now left wondering if my great-grandfather was my great-grandfather. So, I have some questions if anyone can help out:
- How possible is it that my great-grandfather's fairly English background (from London, Essex, etc) might be mistaken for Irish DNA?
- Given the approximate 13% of my DNA being Irish from my dad, would you think that this is largely from a great-grandparent who is more or less fully Irish?
- Given the oddity regarding my great-grandparents marital status when my grandfather was born, would you think that would add any credence to the possibility that my great-grandfather wasn't this Englishman?
Some notes:
- My father will be taking a test in the next couple of weeks
- So far I have zero ThruLine matches through my dad's dad's dad's line, but several through all the Scottish branches of the family and several through all my mom's lines
- And to pre-emptively answer about Irish folks on the Scottish side of my dad's family, I've only found a couple in my fairly extensive research; my 5x great-grandparents on one side and a pair of 4x great-grandparents on another, all of whose descendants married Scots. I still don't know how I come up as 13% Irish even though I know it's random. It still seems far too high to me.
So, any thoughts? Possibilities? Theories?
Thanks so much. :)

2023.03.23 05:36 dazzlingupstairz Interesting Globe article about how DCF avoids going through the courts when they take custody of children
TLDR, DCF seems to avoid going through the courts if they can.
This is extremely odd, and the story only seems to be getting big because they did it to a family that had the capital to fund a legal battle.
It doesn't seem right.
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/01/17/metro/state-legal-aid-agency-seeks-more-oversight-when-dcf-removes-children-homes-without-court-orde
No paywall
From the globe article.
- In the Waltham family’s case, child welfare workers had a full business day to obtain a court order before they arrived at the home, in the middle of the night. And still they did not seek one.
- Sabey and Perkins have been sharing their story publicly to bring attention to what they called a flawed process. After the case workers took the children into custody, they later agreed that weekend to place the boys in the care of their paternal grandparents. But Sabey called for greater oversight, saying there was no need for case workers and police officers to take their children in the first place.
It seems like getting a court order for removing a child isn't the norm? Doc at Tufts noticed a rib fracture. Social worker didn't like the answers. No court order needed, even if everything is discovered on a Thursday.
Reason Article
Reason has done great stuff on civil asset forfeiture too.
They are a libertarian publication, so I know some are turned off. But regarding these sorts of abuses of police power that don't get enough attention, they're pretty good.
- After an exhausting gamut of interviews and after DCF workers surveyed Sabey and Perkins' apartment—where no concerns were found—the couple and their children were sent home on July 14 with a DCF safety plan, assuming their ordeal was over.
- Instead, DCF came to their house in the middle of the night—around 1:00 a.m.—and demanded custody of the children, despite having no court documents approving removal. "It seems everything was deliberately timed to avoid having to get a court order and avoid proving to a judge that the children were in imminent danger," Perkins later wrote. "Their laziness came at the cost of our children's sense of security."
- While Perkins' parents, who had flown to Boston, were eventually granted temporary custody of the children, it still took nearly a month for Sabey and Perkins to regain full custody of their children. According to the Post, the couple spent over $50,000 in legal fees fighting to convince the state to return their children. They will likely have to spend much more to strike from the record the couple's "supported allegation of child abuse."
July 14 was a Thursday. They should have been able to get a court order, right? Most people don't have $50,000 lying around. Does DCF operate extrajudicially?

2023.03.23 05:24 Secret-Lock-8601 MIL Upset over Fuzzy Socks (RANT)
I'm SOOO sorry if this is all over the place. I'm just so angry.
There are only two people I hate.
- My sister because when I was 10 years old and she was 12, she would physically assault me up over everything. I wouldn't let her wear my pants. She starts hitting me. I wouldn't give her money. She starts hitting me. She did this until she was kicked out at 25 years old (I was 23).
- My MIL.
If she would die tomorrow, I would not go to her funeral.
I use to have an okay relationship with my MIL. We weren't close, but we can talk and be in the same room just fine. I moved in with my boyfriend and his family during my junior year of college and within a couple of months I saw how my MIL truly was.
It started off with her coming home from a vacation and she yelled at my boyfriend and I for the the "messy house." It was a Sunday at 1 pm and the "mess" was a single spoon in the sink. My boyfriend and I cleaned the entire house (vacuum, mop, etc) all morning long.
MIL has put a lot of "nails in the coffin" of this relationship.
Nail 1: My BIL (Brother in law) and BF got into an argument over my BF car. (BIL wanted to borrow it, but has a history of leaving a mess and no gas). Also it's my BF car, he pays for all of it (insurance/ monthly payments). But yet, MIL still sided with BIL (she always does). For whatever reason, after that fight, she pulled me to the side and said, "I hope you don't have kids." all because when my BF was 14 years old he sold weed one time (or tried to)..... Hasn't done it since. (29 years old).
That hurt me. He was 14. He was a dumb kid. Since then, he went to college, graduated with honors, did a shit ton of volunteer work. You're seriously going to hold something that is 10+ years old over his head?!
So I was pissed. She asked me to not tell my BF, but F U C K that. I told him. She knew I was pissed and her apology was, "I'm sorry I came to you as an adult." I told her that wasn't an apology and she just walked away.
She ended up unfriending me on social media (Facebook/Instagram). LMAO
A few months go on and she asked if I wanted to get my nails done, but due to school I'm unable to have my nails done. So I tell her no, and I tell her why. She didn't seem mad at the time. That happened in April 2022.
Janurary of this year, she comes up at me and say, "I have an extra pair of valentines socks, do you want them?" I told her no, that I don't like Valentines as a holiday. She wasn't mad. Just said okay and walked away.
On Valentines Day, my BF and I are getting ready to go get dinner. We normally don't celebrate Valentines day, BUT there was a resturant that we have been wanting to try but it's stupid expensive & we needed an excuse to go. This was it. I also have my nails done, because my friend is learning how to do them and I'm her test subject. I'm also allowed to have them because this semester is all online.
So as I'm getting ready (literally jeans and a red top), MIL keeps making passive aggressive comments like, "cute nails.... thought you didn't like getting them done?" "You look nice... thought you hated valentines day?"
It's started an argument between my MIL and my BF and I.
- "Im sorry I don't remember every single stupid detail of her life." I guess asking someone you have known for 7 years to know your birthday is "stupid."
- "She has be the victim. I feel like I'm walking around eggshells with you two!" When we asked BIL to help more with the cleaning. He woudl slam the dishes down and then bang the vacuum on our bedroom door.... He is 23 years old.
- "She is just so rude." Her "rude" story of me, is that I didn't offer my BIL and his GF a slice of pizza because they just walked in from eating out. But she ignores that when her own husband is insulting her and saying that what she is wearing is ugly, I'm the only person defending her. Well, that wont happen anymore.
- "She doesn't talk to anyone. All she says "it's fine" like a parrot." I don't talk to her because within a single weekend she asked the same question over and over again. She doesn't remember anything you say. Oh and she has walked away in the middle of me talking.
Obviously the fight didn't end well, and we missed our dinner date.
The silent treatment doesn't bother me. I actually find it funny, because during the first few weeks she couldn't be in the same room as me. She would see me in a room, leave, and then when I leave, I would hear her walk to that room. She would purposefully take the "long" way through the house just so she doesn't have to walk past me.
But I draw the line of the petty and immature silent treatment when it comes to a serious event.
Nail 2: I had a very close aunt of mine pass away. As my BF and I were getting ready to go to the funeral, FIl was saying how sorry he was and he wished he could make it. MIL just stared at me. Not saying anything. When I leave the room, she is telling my BF how sorry she is. You're that upset over some damn socks?!
I told my BF she will never see our kids. That I will be staying home on holidays. & that she is going to be put in a retirement home.
There are so many stories that I wasn't sure where to start. So I'm sorry for this mess.
I. Hate. Her.
Edit: A lot a grammar mistakes.

2023.03.23 04:58 cloudedknife Fining option for pectin after fermentation?
4 weeks ago, I pitched yeast on a 5 gallon batch of lemon melomel (1gallon honey, 11cups fresh squeezed lemon juice, balance of water w irish moss boiled in - 1100 sg). This weekend I think I'll be racking it over to a secondary for bulk aging...assuming gravity is 1000 or lower, which it probably is, since last weekend measured 1014.
It occurred to me about a week in though, that maybe I should have added pectic enzyme at the start. I've heard that citrus in particular can be problematic in that way, moreover than other fruits. I've also heard that pectin WILL eventually settle out with time, but never quite as densely as one might want without pectic enzyme.
What are my options?

2023.03.23 04:49 megggie Is anyone here familiar with A. M. Shine?
If not, I beg you to check out his first book, The Watchers, and his second, The Creeper. I finished the former yesterday and I’m halfway through the latter. Absolutely terrifying!
If you like modern interpretations of ancient folklore (specifically Irish) and super spooky vibes, you’ll devour these books.
I’d love to hear from any of you who have read these! His latest is from 2022, so not brand new but recent. I’m enjoying the hell out of it!
Any suggestions for similar writers/themes would be welcome as well. Hope you’re all having a great day or night!

2023.03.23 03:39 barrettcoldyron I’m so happy that my ex wife is miserable.
Three years ago I(48 m) found out my wife (46 f) was having an affair. She met a guy at work and came home one day telling me she was in love with him, no longer loved me and wanted a divorce. This was a guy she’d only known for three months at the time. She and I had been together since we were in our 20’s. We have three kids 28m, 26m and 23 f.
Well I tried to fight for my marriage and didn’t want a divorce but she simply would not stop seeing this guy. After one weekend where she disappeared from Friday afternoon to Sunday night I ended up throwing her out of the house. She immediately moved in with this guy. The only excuse she ever gave me was “I never wanted to hurt you, but there’s just something about this guy.” And “I deserve to be happy.” That was it. That was the depth of her reasoning for throwing everything we built together away.
We ended up finalizing our divorce in early 2022. Although I had very hard feelings toward her I faked it enough to get pretty favorable divorce terms from her. It seemed she was so eager to be with her dream man that she didn’t have time for a long divorce. So in the end I got to keep my pension and the house (which I had bought from my grandmother). I did have to give her half of my 401k however.
The effect on our kids was pretty devastating. All three of them took it very hard. My oldest son told her that if she chose this man he’d never have a relationship with her again. As of right now neither of our sons has a relationship with their mother. Our daughter does talk to her from time to time but their relationship is very strained to say the least. My daughter is a very kind person and she tries but she usually ends her conversations with her mother even more upset than when they started.
About four months after the divorce my ex contacted me out of the blue. She told me she had made a terrible mistake and asked if she could come home. He dream man turned out to be an alcoholic who she says is verbally abusive and wasted all of her money. I used this opportunity to tell her exactly what I thought of her as a person, a wife and a mother. I told her this was her life now and to deal with it. I told her she no longer had a home at this house and to never contact me again.
Then a few things happened over the last year that have driven her to start trying to contact me again. First off I met someone. My sister introduced me to a friend of hers who is also divorced and she and I hit it off. We’ve been seeing each other since last summer and while we’ve agreed that neither of us wants to get married again, we are together.
Once my ex heard about this she once again tried to contact me but I ignored her. My son also got married and didn’t invite his mother. She again contacted me to try to get me to intervene on her behalf. I told her I would talk to him but I never did. Secretly I feel like she deserves all the pain she’s feeling when it comes to our kids. She destroyed our family without so much as an afterthought. Too bad, so sad.
Now she recently told our daughter that she finally broke it off with the dream man because she could take his drinking and total lack of responsibility. He wasted her half of the 401k that I had to give her. He also totaled her car driving drunk. This from a man in his 40’s. Again she knew this guy for three months and torpedoed our whole family for him.
On the face of it I act like I feel sorry for her but inside I really delight in the fact that she’s so unhappy. Call me evil or whatever I don’t care. She brought this on herself and it serves her right. I actually had to sit there one Saturday night while she got ready for a date with this guy and laughed on the phone with her friend about how awkward our living situation was. I lived in hell for over a year because of her.
Wait until she finds out our son and his wife are going to have a baby later this year. Maybe if she had been able to keep her legs closed she’d get to meet her grandchild. Enjoy your shitty one bedroom apartment and your broken down used car. Me and my new partner will think of you when we’re on vacation in Hawaii this summer. Hawaii was the trip my ex and I always planned to take once our daughter finished college. Maybe I’ll send her pictures.
TL;DR: my ex cheated on me and now she’s miserable and I’m overjoyed.

2023.03.23 03:18 jennyr101 Please help - need advice on what do with my loving but aggressive, low bite inhibition dog.
*** Content warning: post discusses dog bites and euthanasia. ***
TL:DR I have a dog who 99% of the time is very loving and happy. However 1% of the time is very aggressive and dangerous (bit my mom's face this weekend). Every professional recommends euthanasia, but I can't bring myself to accept this. Looking for advice on dental disarmament or finding sanctuary placement. Can anyone share experiences with either of these?
I am writing very distressed and looking for advice on what to do with my family's 3.5 year old, ~55 pound male dog. He lives with my parents (~60 years old). I am 25 and in grad school in a major city nearby so I do not live with the dog / my parents, but I visit frequently.
Ninety-nine percent of the time, you couldn't ask for a better dog. He is loving, playful, cuddly, and fun. He is exceptionally cute and my family loves him dearly. However since he was about 1.5 years old (2 years ago) he has had a problem with episodic, severe aggression. This past weekend the dog bit my mother's face and left her needing 16 stitches.
My parents care for the dog exceptionally well. They take him on 3x daily walks, provide mental stimulation in the form of puzzles, we have a hug fenced yard that they play with him in etc.. He has been socialized his whole life with a few dogs on our street that he adores and plays well with. Other than these dogs who are his friends, he barks at and acts aggressively towards other dogs (started at ~1.5 years old, before this he was great with other dogs). My family adopted him from a rescue as an ~8 week old puppy. They have never once hit him or even yelled at him. Since we got him so young, a traumatic history is unlikely unless something happened in his very early life.
His concerning behavior started as resource aggression over sticks and weird objects he would acquire. Basically sometimes if something fell to the floor ( real example include an olive oil cap, a piece of felt, chair glider), or if he found a stick he liked outside, he would become very possessive of it. If my parents said "drop it" he would very aggressively jump up at their face and snap lightly at their jackets etc. My parents hired a trainer (no certified vet behaviorists were available in our state) who they saw for a few weeks and helped teach them how to manage his resource aggression.
Now (2023) they have his resource aggression pretty much handled and can recognize his subtle warning signs. They know how to properly "trade" or distract him. However in the learning process there were issues. The dog chased and bit my mom when she asked him to drop a stick (May 2021). She was wearing a heavy sweater and jacket so no broken skin but it caused significant bruising. He also attacked my dad over some felt (January 2022), this resulted in a gash in his hand - probably a level 4 bite maybe a high level 3. In both cases the trigger was nothing more than saying "drop it" or the word "crate".
While normally so sweet, the dog becomes enraged when attacking. He is also super strong for a medium dog (55 pounds). He pretty quickly snaps out of this altered state he seems to enter, but the damage is already done. After he bites, he doesn't seemed distressed or remorseful, just acts normally like nothing happened.
With both the May 2021 and Jan 2022 bites, my parents took him to his vet for a medical assessment afterwards (no abnormalities found) and asked if he could be put on medication. The vet said no meds would work as he is not habitually anxious and meds don't really work for rage (I wish they pushed back and insisted we try, but they did not).
I strongly encouraged my parents to start intense training with him but they expressed belief that his rage problems can't be trained out. They saw a trainer 2 more times and worked on muzzle training and learning how to be more commanding around him. They didn't really believe this would help him so stopped, against my advice. They are responsible people so knowing that he poses a danger to others they began taking precautions. Though he loves and is thrilled to see people, we keep him away from any visitors in our house due to his unpredictable behaviors, try to walk him in areas where there is very low risk of exposure to other dogs.
After the Jan 2022 bite, he had no major incidents for 1 year and 2 months (though a few snaps and diffused situations). He genuinely lives what appears to be a very happy life. Loves to play, is so excited to see family members when they come into the house, enjoys walks in the empty trails behind our house, seeing his few dog-friends etc. Sadly this weekend was his worst attack ever.
Our dog noticed an unfamiliar dog in the neighbor's yard that he could see through the fence. He was barking like crazy at the other dog in a very aggressive way (as he generally does with unfamiliar dogs) and my mom went to pull him away from the fence (I wish she didn't). He turned around, jumped up, and bit her face - hard. He released quickly and went to kiss her afterwards, but obviously the damage was done. My mom is on antibiotics and got over a dozen stitches from a plastic surgeon on her face. She is in a lot of pain and obviously distressed about scars. It was very hard for me to see her like this. Definitely a level 4 bite, his worst yet.
Talking to our vet and trainer after this weekend's attack, they both recommend euthanasia due to his extremely low bite inhibition and his reactivity. I know he can't keep hurting my parents who have been so wonderful and loving to him. I am devastated by this prospect of letting him go though because I know he didn't mean to do what he did. When I came home he was truly so excited to see me. Medication and intensive training have not been tried yet so I don't feel like it is fair to give up on him without attempting these.
My parents are devastated but feel they truly cannot keep him. They are 60, my dad travels for work 1 or 2 weeks each month, so often its my mom alone with the dog. He has severely injured my mom already. My parents are not dog behavior expert and have tried their best. They love him so well and have given him abundant attention, love, exercise, toys etc. but they don't really have the resources or personality type to manage this dog. Many children live on our street and my family is sick at the thought of something going wrong.
The dog's aggressive behavior is infrequent and totals to less than 15 mins of his entire life. 99.9% He is a very happy, loving guy, but I understand that sadly he is a very dangerous animal that has inflicted severe bites onto both of my parents and once charged at my older brother, unprovoked. I understand he poses a threat the the public, and my family, so I wonder about the possibility of dental disarmament (teeth extraction). I know he could still "bite", but I don't know if he could still break skin or do any severe damage. It would also obviously be paired with training, medication, and security reinforcements. Looking for thoughts on this avenue? It seems there are conflicting opinions on dental disarmament in the field of veterinary medicine. Can anyone weigh in on if this is a viable option? Has anyone had to do this to their dog? In a long email to our dog's vet, my parents asked about dental disarmament but she only said "I do not recommend this" - I may reach out to her to expand on her reasoning behind this position. I don't know about the psychological ramifications of teeth extraction or if it would be very painful. In my mind it is a solution to letting him go on living his seeming very happy life, but making it so that he can not seriously hurt anyone when his rage flip switches.
I have contacted a number of sanctuaries, however none will accept him either due to space reasons or his bite history. I know not all of these places are reputable and most have long waits. I was hoping anyone can advise me on experiences they may have had with any sanctuaries? I would need him to be somewhere that could give him a very good quality of life. I would of course thoroughly vet anywhere before handing him over. Mid-Atlantic or Northeast would be prefered. I also worry our dog, who adores my family, would miss us everyday and feel abandoned, leading to worse mental health.
My parents are ready to let him go, though they are sick over it and heartbroken. I am really hoping for a different way. Would love people's thoughts. Thank you.

After a two-day meeting, the Federal Reserve announced on Wednesday that it would raise interest rates by 25 basis points. The Fed expressed caution over the recent banking crisis and signaled that rate hikes are nearing an end. This is the ninth rate hike since March 2022. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which sets monetary rates, noted that there was no guarantee of future rate hikes and that much would depend on data released thereafter. The FOMC statement after the meeting said: "The Committee will closely monitor incoming information and assess the implications for monetary policy. The Committee expects that some Additional policy tightening may be appropriate." This wording differs from previous statements. Previous Fed statements have pointed out that "sustained interest rate increases" are appropriate to reduce inflation. This softening of the tone comes at a time when the banking crisis has raised concerns about the stability of the system. The FOMC statement pointed to the likely impact of the recent banking crisis events. "The U.S. banking system is sound and resilient. Recent developments could lead to tighter credit conditions for households and businesses, with negative impacts on economic activity, hiring and inflation," the committee said. pressure. The magnitude of these effects is uncertain. The Committee remains highly concerned about inflation risks." Despite warnings about the potential impact of a banking crisis, the committee unanimously approved the rate hike. After this rate hike, the target range of the US federal funds benchmark interest rate has risen to 4.75%-5%. The target range for the federal funds rate, which sets the level at which banks charge each other for overnight loans, passes through to a wide range of consumer debt, including mortgages, auto loans and credit cards. Forecasts released alongside the rate decision showed Fed officials expect terminal U.S. interest rates to peak at 5.1%, unchanged from their previous estimate in December, suggesting most expect just one more rate hike ahead. The data released together with the statement shows that among the 18 Fed officials who submitted the "dot plot of interest rate hike path", 7 believe that the terminal interest rate will be higher than 5.1%. Forecasts for interest rates over the next two years also show wide divergence among Fed members. This is reflected in the wide dispersion of "forecast points" for future interest rates. Still, the median forecast by Fed officials points to a 0.8 percentage point cut in the U.S. federal funds benchmark rate in 2024 and a 1.2 percentage point cut in 2025. The FOMC statement completely deleted the expression about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The market has been paying close attention to the decision of the Federal Reserve's March monetary policy meeting, because the uncertainty faced by the Fed at this meeting is higher than that when the institution usually makes interest rate decisions. Earlier this month, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said the central bank may have to take a more aggressive approach to curbing inflation. But a fast-moving banking crisis has dampened any thoughts of a more hawkish move and led to a consensus that the Fed will cut interest rates by the end of the year. Uncertainty over the path of policy was underscored by forecasts for Federal Open Market Committee members' views on interest rates, inflation, the unemployment rate and gross domestic product (GDP), released Wednesday. Fed officials also adjusted their economic forecasts. They slightly raised their inflation expectations, forecasting inflation to be 3.3% this year, compared with 3.1% in December. Unemployment fell a notch to 4.5%, while GDP growth expectations edged down to 0.4%. Officials made little change to their estimates for the next two years, merely lowering their GDP forecast for 2024 to 1.2% from 1.6% in December. These forecasts are made against a turbulent backdrop. In a subsequent press conference, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said: "A small number of banks are in serious difficulty. The Fed, Treasury, and FDIC have acted decisively earlier. Depositors' savings are safe. " But he warned: "If isolated bank problems are not addressed, the entire banking system could be threatened. Our lending program is effectively meeting the needs of banks. The Fed will continue to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to use all tools available to ensure the safety of the banking system." and stable." Powell said that the US labor market is still too tight, inflation is still too high, and the Federal Reserve is still strongly committed to keeping the inflation rate down to 2%. He said that higher interest rates and slower growth are dragging down businesses, and almost all FOMC members believe that the risks to economic growth are mainly on the downside. Powell said wage growth was showing some signs of easing. Inflation expectations appear to be well under control. U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen emphasized on Wednesday that bank owners and bondholders are not protected by the government. Yellen plans to defend the Biden administration's actions in Congress on Wednesday to boost confidence in the U.S. banking sector, stressing that no bailouts have been offered to owners or investors of any failed banks. "It's important to be clear: Shareholders and debt holders of failed banks are not protected by the government," Yellen said in prepared remarks for a hearing before a Senate subcommittee. "Losses resulting from the resolution process of these banks are not borne by the taxpayer," she added. "The protection of deposits is provided by the Deposit Insurance Fund, which is funded by the insurance premiums of the insured banks." On the budget front, Yellen will respond to the administration's controversial request to send an additional $14 billion to the IRS. And just a year ago, Congress appropriated $80 billion to rebuild the IRS over the next decade. "The budget we are requesting will provide steady operating funding that will enable taxpayers to receive the best possible service," Yellen said in her speech. "It will complement the one-time, long-term investment in the IRS." U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the Dow up nearly 1%, the S&P 500 up 1.3%, and the Nasdaq up 1.58%. "U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday as concerns over a banking crisis eased and investors were encouraged by the growing likelihood that the Fed was close to ending tightening," said Brian Levitt, global market strategist at Invesco. He added: "The Fed's tightening cycle usually ends with a crisis. And these crises often end with a policy response. This may help explain (Tuesday's) market movements." Focus stocks Virgin Orbit is said to be in talks with venture capitalist Matthew Brown to raise $200 million in funding. Virgin Orbit was in daily talks with a host of potential investors over the weekend in a bid to avoid bankruptcy. Game Station (23.87, 6.22, 35.24%) net sales in the fourth fiscal quarter were US$2.23 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 1.2%, but better than market expectations of US$2.18 billion; net profit was US$48.2 million, the first profit in two years, This compares to a loss of $147.5 million a year earlier; earnings per share were 16 cents, compared to a loss of 49 cents per share in the same period last year. Nike (119.5, -6.11, -4.86%) third-quarter sales increased 14% year-on-year to $12.39 billion, higher than the expected $11.47 billion, and earnings per share were 79 cents, higher than the expected 55 cents. Sales in China, Nike's third largest market, fell 8% to US$1.99 billion, and it has not yet recovered from the epidemic, while sales in other markets achieved double-digit growth. Greg Abel, head of Berkshire Hathaway's (455660, -4855.03, -1.05%) non-insurance business and Buffett's pick to succeed him, bought value stocks on Friday, according to a regulatory filing Tuesday. $24.6 million in Berkshire stock, bringing the total value of his holdings in the company to about $105 million. On Friday, Abel bought 55 Berkshire Class A shares at $447,259 each, bringing his Class A holdings to 228. In addition, he owns 2,263 Berkshire Class B shares. Shareholders suing Qualcomm (121.97, -1.83, -1.48%) for allegedly concealing anti-competitive sales and licensing practices can bring claims against the company in a class action, a U.S. federal judge has ruled. Oracle (87.9, 0.32, 0.37%) official Weibo reported on March 22 that Oracle officially released Java 20. Java 20 (Oracle JDK 20) offers improvements in performance, stability, and security, including enhancements to further optimize the platform. According to reports, Boeing (196.16, -8.54, -4.17%) has received an order worth at least 2.5 billion U.S. dollars, and Japan Airlines has purchased 21 of its 737 MAX aircraft. The deal will be announced on the 23rd. Silicon Valley Bank Financial Group, the parent company of Silicon Valley Bank, accused the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation of the United States of acting improperly at the bankruptcy hearing on Tuesday, and demanded from it the frozen $2 billion previously stored in Silicon Valley Bank. In other markets, New York gold futures closed higher on Wednesday. Gold futures continued to rise in electronic trading after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points, raising the target range for the benchmark federal funds rate to a range of 4.75% to 5%. Gold futures for April delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose $8.50, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,949.60 an ounce. 2023.03.23 02:51 Aromatic-Office-4394 Not revenge, exactly...
I left my abuser on January 1, 2022. I missed him for a while, but a short email exchange we had after three months NC reminded me why I left, and I've never looked back.
But I've had to deal with A LOT in the aftermath. I was recently diagnosed with CPTSD and have been having panic attacks when my new neighbor starts yelling and stomping up and down the stairs. I've literally huddled on my sofa for hours, completely unable to move, when that happens. I lost my job semi-indirectly because of him; I was in the process of getting a PFA, the lawyer called one afternoon and said I needed to be there early the next morning, and I got written up for not giving 24 hours notice. Yes, it was a crappy job, but it was still A JOB, and I ended up having to get by on a 16-hours-per-week check from my part-time job for almost four months.
He, on the other hand, has suffered almost NO consequences at all. He put on his "Good Guy" act (and BOY, is it an act) and buffaloed my lawyer and the judge into dropping the PFA and going with just a no-contact order, even though he was at least shopping for guns (don't know if he actually bought one) less than three weeks after I left, and used my Amazon account and credit card to order a movie called "The Dead Girl in Apartment 3" (my apartment number is VERY close to 3), and even though nearly all of the major abusive incidents are documented in my PMs to friends and/or doctor's and therapist's notes.
In his job, he's the public face of his company. He took great pains to hide our relationship when we were together. He told me I'd have to scrub all my social media if I wanted to go public that we were together - this was after we'd been together more than three years and I'd moved in with him. He posted photos of his son, his cat, etc., on social media, but never once posted any photos of me or anything about me, and told me it was because he didn't want to share his private life publicly.
So revenge isn't really something I want, but I can't help being angry that more than a year later, I'm STILL suffering from the aftereffects of his abuse, while he gets to just live his life as he did before.
If I wanted to take a six-hour road trip this weekend, there's an event for his company at a place in Boston. All I'd have to do is walk in while he's there and he'd have to choose between coming clean about the abuse or getting arrested for violating the no-contact order. Either way, his "Good Guy" act would come crashing down around him.
I'm about 90% sure I'm not going to do it, but DAMN I'm tempted. Something in me just really NEEDS his abuse to be acknowledged.

2023.03.23 00:52 throwaway52854920 How do I (21F) get over my ex (21M)
I’m looking for advice on how to get over my ex, even though he has really hurt me. It’s been rough since September 2022. We dated for 2.5 years prior. I told him I needed some space (breakup) to focus on getting into my dream masters program with less than a 5% acceptance rate (I needed 5 A+). He agreed and was waiting for me. I fucked up by never giving him an end date. But he never expressed to me he was tired of waiting and communicated his feelings. I just knew he was a little confused on why we couldn’t be together but for my mental health, I couldn’t worry about another person right now. Keep in mind every weekend we told each other we still loved each other and can’t wait to marry each other.
In Jan 2023, he flirted with my best friend at a party and over text and she sent me the screenshots. I understand we’re both “single” but it was not cool of him to go for my friend. He apologized profusely and told me he still loves me and I said I would try and forgive him. 2 weeks later we got into an argument and he lashed out at me. He told me he doesn’t feel anything, cannot love anyone, doesn’t love me, doesn’t care about me, wouldn’t care if I died etc. That hurt my feelings a lot. I poured my heart out and wrote him a long apology on text and he told me he still wanted to be with me. Obviously this left me confused, so I called him 2 weeks after that begging for him back and he called me back the next day saying his answer is no. I found out he’s talking to someone else now 3 weeks after we last spoke. All of the things he’s doing and have said have really hurt me and I’m trying my hardest to move forward but I’m going through a major depressive episode. How do I get over this?
tldr: my ex hurt me really badly and I can’t get over him

2023.03.22 23:38 Majestic_Rule4040 NJ Unemployment Hearing Tomorrow Morning: what can I expect?
I would love any advice on what to expect on my unemployment benefits appeal hearing (over the phone) tomorrow morning. How long will the call take? How prepared do I have to be as far as legal language?
I'll preface this by saying that I know I don't have the strongest case to win this, but I voluntarily left my job in 2021 and applied for unemployment benefits 2 months later. This was my first real job out of college, so I kind of got taken advantage of. My job had been having me work 10-12 hour regular days & weekends pretty much the entire 4 years I worked there. I was salaried/ exempt- so no overtime pay. I got a total of 2 bonuses during the 4 years. When I complained that the work was too much and hours were too long, my boss told me we couldn't hire due to upper management policies & that my job as an exempt employee meant I had to work whatever hours necessary until my job was done. I would've quit sooner, but then the pandemic hit & I knew I had job security, so I stayed. Overall, the toll this job took on me mentally & personally was brutal. I developed anxiety & physically felt stress from the moment I woke up thinking about going to work. I had mental breakdowns and anxiety attacks and had no personal life because of my crazy hours. I would lash out at my family and friends for no reason other than just being stressed. I felt depressed and was a shell of myself, so as soon as my already miserable job took a turn for the worse (my manager told me I had to cover someone else's job for up to 10 months on top of my already excessive work load and said I had "no choice" in the matter because it was the only solution management could come up with), I finally resigned in 2021. I gave 6 weeks notice out of decency, and promised myself I'd never take a job in that industry again for fear of a similar outcome. Being this was my first time resigning and I was in a bad place mentally, I didn't even think to keep emails or documents, so I unfortunately don't have much evidence. Since I was approved eligible for unemployment benefits, I decided to pursue them, but my claim eventually got denied, so I appealed & got denied again. This 2nd appeal is a phone hearing and I will be representing myself. I haven't received any benefits yet, but I stand to gain a max of over $15k, so it's kind of a big deal. I was unemployed for 11 months, and after 257 job applications (and over 240 rejections- probably due to lack of experience & trying to change industries), I finally got a dream job in 2022. I amassed quite a bit of debt during that year, so this money would really help, but I've also made peace with the fact that I most likely won't win.
TLDR: I voluntarily quit my job due to years of excessive hours, stress, & anxiety, but still pursued unemployment benefits. I have not received any money yet, but stand to win over $15k if decided in my favor. 1.5 years after applying for benefits, my 2nd appeal is a phone hearing that's finally happening tomorrow morning & I am representing myelf & very nervous. I know my chances are slim to none in winning this, but figured I have nothing to lose.

2023.03.22 23:06 Cautious_Kamakazi March 22, 2023, 7:47 a.m. ET. Credit Suisse’s Investment Bank Is Slowly Disappearing UBS is weighing whether and how to end a deal that would have preserved most of its rival’s investment bank, as part of its takeover of the ailing Swiss lender.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/22/business/dealbook/credit-suisses-investment-bank.html Credit Suisse’s investment bank may vanish When UBS agreed to buy Credit Suisse at a fire-sale price over the weekend, a big question was what would happen to the ailing firm’s investment bank. Months before the chaos that felled Credit Suisse, the firm had unveiled an ambitious plan to spin out the division, under the leadership of the veteran deal maker Michael Klein, as part of its now-failed turnaround effort.
The DealBook Newsletter Our columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin and his Times colleagues help you make sense of major business and policy headlines — and the power-brokers who shape them. Get it sent to your inbox.
But it now looks like the investment bank will largely be dissolved, as UBS makes clear that it’s only interested in bits of the business, and as the Swiss government moves to bar some promised payouts to Credit Suisse’s bankers. What was once a top-flight shop of corporate advisers now appears to be a melting ice cube.
UBS probably won’t proceed with the Klein-led spinout, cutting off the most likely way of preserving big chunks of the investment bank. Under those plans, Credit Suisse would have purchased Klein’s advisory boutique, combining it with its own division and eventually spinning it out under the First Boston name. (Klein, who was on Credit Suisse’s board, would have received $175 million for his firm and was paid an additional $10 million for advising on Credit Suisse’s plan — terms that some at UBS reportedly saw as too favorable.)
UBS is now weighing whether to end that deal and how it would do so, DealBook hears. The writing had been on the wall since the takeover announcement: First Boston would have relied on capital from Credit Suisse to help fund equity and debt underwriting, and the UBS deal now makes that impossible.
UBS has expressed interest in keeping some Credit Suisse investment bankers in key industries — technology, media and health care, among others — to augment its own advisory operations and complement its core wealth management business. But UBS executives have made clear they plan to run down Credit Suisse’s trading operations and limit the size of its overall investment banking arm.
Meanwhile, other Credit Suisse bankers have fewer reasons to stay. Unless they specialize in those particular sectors, their chances of being absorbed into UBS are murky at best.
Moreover, the Swiss government said yesterday that it would suspend deferred bonuses for Credit Suisse employees that were granted before 2022. (The bank can still pay cash bonuses for last year.) That compounds the pain for Credit Suisse staffers, who have already seen the value of their shares in their employer — as well as bonuses in the form of other securities linked to the bank’s performance — all but wiped out by the UBS deal.
This may make it harder for Credit Suisse to operate as though it’s business as usual, especially as anxious bankers call up recruitment firms to find jobs elsewhere.
In other Credit Suisse news, the bank went ahead with an investment conference in Hong Kong this week, featuring the T.V. personality Bear Grylls — and plenty of pathos.
In other banking turmoil news: Expect Jay Powell, the Fed chair, to face questions from Congress about why regulators missed warning signs at midsize lenders. First Republic has hired Lazard to help review its strategic options, while the government weighs additional backstops to encourage would-be rescuers of the firm.
HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING An unexpected surge in inflation in Britain complicates a move on interest rates. Consumer prices there rose 10.4 percent in February compared with a year earlier, accelerating after months of slowing down. That may undermine expectations that the Bank of England was close to halting rate increases as part of its inflation-fighting efforts; the central bank will announce its next policy decision tomorrow.
