2023.03.23 05:12 Seeking911 The Protect : Chapter TWO
Meke Linca’s lifeless body laid on a grand gray marble slab that stood four feet tall. Torches and candles lit the temple in a warm, quiet glow for the ceremony. Although Meke Linca wasn’t someone important, the Ritual of Death is. Many people facing the end sought the Ritual of Transition. They would live the rest of their lives in mire fracked from the earth; a luminous pale material that would eventually make its way through every vein, every blood vessel of the body. It made death a blissful event. But for the Ritual of Death, this was honorable and sacred. The Temple reserved this ritual for those who had passed from childbirth, murder, or an accident—and for those facing death despite it all. Meke was indeed courageous.
Sioba felt pity and deep sorrow for Marta and watched him as he looked over his mother’s body. It told a story all too familiar— of those whose lives should have been grand and adventurous, but they had made a stupid, selfish choice.
She measured the young man, who had forced his brooding eyes away when he noticed Mother Aeda and Mama Doni, dressed in ceremonial white tunics, and Sioba, who was dressed in a thick layer of protective cloth, standing nearby.
Marta kissed his mother one last time and stepped away. There was no one else attending, but according to Mother Aeda, at least she had her son, at least she brought life into the world. Sioba wasn’t sure that was enough. Sioba stood near the young man, who had downcast eyes and tense jaw. She admired him in a way. Not once did he fall for either Mama Doni’s or her desires for him. It’s easy for men to give up in this society, and yet there he stood.
Mother Aeda sang the rites, then handed Marta the oil, which he patted in the center of his mother’s forehead with trembling hands.
Meke protected him well; he hadn’t seen much death.
When Sioba placed her hand on Marta’s shoulder, tenderly and with respect, he started. “Your mother is at peace now,” she said, though by the wild stare of pain, she doubted Marta believed her.
He stared at her with deep blue eyes. Any woman would get lost in those eyes. “I know.”
It was time. Sioba lifted the dead woman off the ceremonial slab, with some aid, and carried her, with much effort, to the Field of Snapping Flowers.
They were watching, Sioba knew. Watching to make sure she made it through without falling into the thorny field of hissing roses and tulips. The hungry flowers snapped at her legs—with a few making their way through the protective cloth.
Sioba reached the very edge of the field. Gently, she laid Meke down, and seconds later, the flowers tore into the dead woman’s flesh.
Before Sioba sat the city of Fulna and her slums. Carriages filled the winding streets, and while only a few could afford them, sunbirds with howdahs on their backs flew in the air. Sioba wanted to stay a little longer. The night was beautiful, alive. She had been conscripted when the Fort Raids War began, but seeing the world now—seeing her people thrive—that was all that truly mattered. “This is what we fought for, Warrior Linca. And we will do it again.”
Back inside the temple, temple sisters handed ceremonial food, purposely bland for the ritual, to the four attendees. A few caught glimpses of Marta, though they knew better.
“Well, Mother Aeda, the island of Ror, off the west coast, is sinking. The Queen had evacuated all the people within a month,” Mama Doni said as she cut into her unseasoned morsel.
“Yes, I know. I had to take in a few of the sisters and mothers residing there. It’s been years since it was bombed by the aliens and their crazy magic. I’m surprised people wanted to stay.”
Sioba cared less about the conversation. Instead, she eyed Marta pointedly. He picked at his food and ate like a bird.
Mother Aeda sighed. “There’s pollution, the women have gone mad, genetic mutations have shortened many of lives there. No one knows what’s going on. Why stay?”
“Because of pride,” the young man said. Mother Aeda and Mama Doni darted their eyes at him in shock. For Sioba, a smile threatened to grow on her face. “Pride. What else can there be?”
She took a sip of the clear, flavorless wine—water would have been much better. “You’re right. I was there for a tour with the Queen and her daughters. I’ve heard that when the aliens finally made the surface and colonized Ror, they took who and what they could for magic experiments, sex, and pets. The aliens treated those there like animals. The people of Ror were mocked because of it. But guess where most of the medical innovation we see now come from? Nowhere else,” scoffed Sioba. “I would have stayed too.”
“Speaking of staying,” Mama Doni whispered, “what have you decided? You are such a good and bright young man. This world is tough for those like you.”
Sioba took another sip of wine and nearly gagged over the disgusting taste.
Marta gulped down his own. “I want to go with Madam Vedu.”
Mama Doni’s brow furrowed as she bored into Marta. It had been her who placed Marta’s photo in Sioba’s hand. And when she had set eyes upon it, upon the young, beautiful Marta, who had seemed to possess simplicity, Sioba had felt a faint epiphany, a sort of awe that pained her heart, as though Marta was meant to be in her life. And while Sioba would rather have another husband if she had to take care of another man, she was glad he accepted her offer. And besides, Mama Doni would have used him up and spit out to breed him to her daughters and whoever else, and Mother Aeda would have no say in the matter.
A man used in such ways was better than him being a dancer or a singer. That was an abomination.
“Then, we shall leave by sunrise,” Sioba announced to the young man, who coyly averted her gaze.
Beyond the walls of the stone temple were the intrusive sounds of the nighthawks. Mother Aeda stood. “Come, child. It is time to see your mother off.”
The group climbed the stairs, stepping onto the grand balcony overlooking the Field of Flowers. Nighthawks, with their shimmering feathers of purple, blue, and black, dove and lifted the clean bones of Meke Linca into the air. No one knew exactly what those creatures did with the bones, and no one dared to find out. They were simply too sacred.
Sioba, standing behind Marta, did not watch the birds and did not listen to their song, because before her, was a trembling child who had lost his mother. She wanted to relieve him of that pain, but like everyone else, he had to fight through the thick of it. He will reach the other side, she knew.
And just like that, he stopped, stiffening and turning to stone. Sioba recognized what he was doing. He was alone now—utterly and completely alone.
The sunbird was up and letting off heat, huffing the last bit of sleep into the air. The driver, appalled by the excrement Rekylo had released earlier, rested against the massive fowl and stared off into the horizon. They had been waiting for more than an hour—forty-five minutes of which was inside the hotel, but still, Sioba was tired, and the long journey back home would only make it worse. Finally, the young man, modestly dressed and with his gaze piously lowered, came through the rooftop doors with only a small luggage and a satchel. He asked without turning to her, “Where shall I put these?”
“I’ll take the luggage, young sir.” Sioba grabbed the belongings and loaded them inside the enclosed howdah—made with Sokiani steel, elaborated with gems and gold plating. Then she helped Marta into the cabin. She turned to the wind-torn face driver to let her know where they could find respite, then finally she climbed into the cabin and saw that Marta was deep in the Holy Book already. This was going to be a long trip, she thought and settled in across him before they flew into the direction of the golden horizon.
After thirty minutes in the sky, Marta had put the book down and stared out the window. It hadn’t occurred to Sioba that the young man was frightened, but she saw it then, the fear. “She’s an excellent pilot, don’t you worry. I was too, so I’ll be the one to know.” And that is true. She was good enough during the war, and that meant she was damn good any other day.
“I’m not. Well… maybe a little,” he sighed. “I’m just worried about the others out there.”
“After the war, we adapted so much of the alien’s magical skill. They figured out the things we couldn’t. In the end, it meant shit, absolute shit. Thank God and Her children. But anyway, I know sunbirds don’t usually crash into each, yet still, we figured a way to keep this beast on track and out of harm’s way, even if the person on the other sunbird was a literal baby.”
Marta chuckled nervously. He stared off again and was as quiet as ever.
Sioba surveyed the rooftops of Fulna, so different—conical and pointier than the curvy barrel roofs of her home city.
Though Ginia and Fulna were a part of the Queen’s nation, the two cities were different and eight hours apart. Usually, she wouldn’t push it. The sunbird, old as she was, could fly for ten hours straight, albeit low and at medium speed, and therefore, ease and comfort were much appreciated.
The sky was beautiful, yet boring. After three husbands, two children, a bustling family, and however many concussions she had during the war (and after too, for one doesn’t simply leave bars alone), sleep came too easy and suddenly. Boredom had a habit of poking her like a drowsy cat. “So, the plan is to land in four hours, book a room—two rooms—and then head out again when I wake up,” she announced, to calm the boy if nothing else.
Sioba watched Marta, as he had not responded. She sighed and opened a magical zine depicting a popular boy group, filling the howdah in low volume. The lead singer’s voice was smooth and seductive, nearing sultry. Their clothing was made of sheer, glittering fabric, probably from the salt hills of Zak, and their feet were adorned with henna and decorated with gemstones reminiscent of the deep sea. The song was full of passion itself, with lines describing love for a woman who was leaving for… whatever reason and how, on the night before she left, he had given her everything. It was an entirely inappropriate song to listen to with a stranger—a pious one at that. She closed the zine and nestled deep in her seat.
“Thank you,” he muttered.
Sioba scoffed at that.
They landed in a cold, desert village — much of it in eyesight. Sioba gathered Marta’s belongings and a bag of her own and entered the small hotel. The place had a musty smell, as though it had experienced a flood. Marta thought a desert as dry and as cold as this could never experience a flood. The world is always a comedian.
Sioba paid for the rooms and handed Marta his key. She showed him the way and left his presence without stating another word.
The room was simple, which was to be expected, and yet still more elaborate than his old bedroom with its carpeted floor, plush velvet sofa, and a groom dais covered in throw pillows. Marta set his things aside and plopped on the bed which gave way to his light weight but did not make a sound. He exhaled and closed his heavy eyes. He wasn’t particularly tired, just mentally exhausted. Being in close contact with Sioba was draining, he’d found. The woman said nothing and sat coldly staring out of the window, and Marta thought it the worst thing that could happen. All of this, the death of his mother, the possibility of marriage (and really, the end of that too and all the other unforeseen consequences from that decision), moving to a new place—all of it overwhelmed him.
Marta was apprehensive of Sioba. Something about her did not sit right with him. The way she looks at him… Her greedy, selfish disregard for rightful unions was one reason, yes—but more importantly, it wasn’t the only one. She had a hand in upturning his mother’s life. He remembered the red dust that could cut skin, the smell of sulfur and shit, the body-shaking cough his mother could not get rid of, the acid that burned through her skin.
And Marta was going to figure out in what way. He didn’t have a purpose, never felt like he should have one, but now the feeling was there, and Marta was going to do something about it. He had to.
Marta took a bath then dressed in a deep rose-hued tunic and covered his hair with a cream-white shawl. He touched up his eyelashes with a light brush of mascara and added a thin layer of pink lipstick to his lips—just enough to emphasize the color already there. Then he went down to the lounge area, made his way through the dancing crowd to the bar, and ordered wine. He had little money. His mother hadn’t left him much. Yet, he didn’t feel guilty for indulging in a drink.
The hotel appeared emptier when Marta had first arrived, but now chatter filled the vast room, concealing the vulgar music coming from the stereos overhead. Marta quickly gained the attention of patrons, some of which were staggeringly drunk. “Come, d-d-d-dance with m-me, b-beautiful,” a red-faced woman slurred.
“No, thank you.”
“My God, I would love to taste you tonight,” another whispered in his ear, but when he turned around, no one was there.
There were other men there, too. Some were with their spouses, some with their sponsors, and a few others without someone searching for an embrace later that night. Of course, Sioba would choose this forsaken place.
Although Marta felt the salacious stares from women around him, he gulped the rest of his wine and searched the room, and there, in a well-lit corner of the lounge, was Sioba, talking to a couple and seemed, on occasion, flirtatious and enjoying the company of a woman’s companion. She leaned into the man and said something which brought an unguarded laugh out of the man. Sioba had a demanding appearance that zines could not convey, could not depict. In places, her brown skin was cool, blemished, and blue and red, warm, and smooth in others. Her dark eyes devour you, as though you possess a secret, and she knows, and she knows you know. On her full lips, she wears a smirk barely buried, hardly there on her chiseled face, but it is as if it’s a diamond, alluring.
And then her gaze fixed on him intently.
Marta turned back around swiftly. "One more glass of wine, please.”
“You like that lady, huh?” some strange woman said, inching closer to him. “In that corner over there?”
Marta scoffed, “No.”
“Well, that’s too bad. I was hoping to make her jealous.”
That’s the last thing that would happen. “Too bad, indeed.”
The stranger threw back her head and laughed. “Oh, goodness, sweety, you are dry. Where’re you from and how did you get here?”
“Someone dragged me here,” Marta half-joked. He watched the bartender make what he’d hoped to be his drink.
The woman inched a little closer; the heat from her and the wine were doing things to Marta. He was getting warmer and desires he tried hard to bury were clawing up. And because he felt brave, he leaned into her, nearly touching her breast. She grinned, and Marta noticed her gold-plated canines. “I have a room here. We can take this there if you want to.”
Marta gazed into the woman’s eyes, which were dead with pleasure. Her lips, as soft as they seemed, pursed with selfishness. In all his days, Marta had never seen a woman look at him in that way, as though he was merely something to be consumed. He peeked over his shoulder at Sioba, who was watching them with a pointed brow. She stood—and that’s when he saw a sheathed dagger, silver and black in its sleekness. Quickly, he turned away, red-faced. He didn’t want Sioba to rescue him, but that didn’t mean he didn’t need saving.
Sioba sat beside him. “Max, a shot of your strongest for me, and give this young man whatever it is you have that’ll fill his stomach. I’ll handle Princess Sa’e’s tab as well.”
Princess Sa’e, the youngest daughter of Queen Xoya III.
That got a deep, guttural laughter out of the young woman next to him. “Goodness, Sioba. What are you, my chaperone? I know you saw how busy I was here.” Then she whispered like it mattered, “Unless you want to join us.”
Marta tapped a damped napkin on his neck. It was getting warmer.
Sioba, after emptying her shot glass and ordering another, said, “What? Fucking two people barely out of the Temple’s Life and Adulting class. Still wet behind the ears. I wouldn’t dream of it.”
Sioba turned and met Marta’s gaze. She peered at him so intensely—her eyes blazed with something Marta could not discern in that moment, for he was upset at her audacity. “A student you tried to marry, no less.”
“Ha! My word!” Princess leaned over the countertop and laughed. “I knew it! A woman like you must have an enormous appetite.”
Sioba’s gentle grin, like a woman dealing with disobedient children, had only angered him. He turned to Princess Sa’e, and whispered, “Take me to your room.”
Gently, Princess Sa’e took his nervous hand and raised it to her full and tender lips. A playful but dangerous smirk lifted on her brown, gilded face, the gold glinting in the dim light. “My pleasure.”
Without thought for he was thinking he would have headed to his room, Marta alighted from the stool and followed behind Princess Sa’e as she led him to the mirrored elevators. Princess Sa’e couldn’t wait to taste him, kissing and licking and grabbing all over him as they danced into the elevator. He had never experienced her kind of need. His moans, the way he grasped at her, may have said otherwise, but feared her kisses and quivered with fright in her grasp. He tried to think of ways to make this better, to drive up his own desire, but this wasn’t what he wanted for himself.
But a young boy must become a man.
The doors swooshed open to the foyer of a plushly carpeted room, sleek with marble and stone. Princess Sa’e grabbed him by the waist, pulling him into her while she moved deeper and deeper into the room, deeper into her dark chamber. Tripping over his robe, Marta landed on the floor still entangled with the princess, who didn’t seem to want to let him loose, not even a little bit. She placed her hand over his neck and lightly squeezed. “I can fucking tell you have never done this before. I’m going to enjoy you.”
Then she caressed her way down, over his chest, over his stomach, like tide wind over waves, until she reached the very base of his hard, and already dripping, penis. She pulled up his robe and pulled down her pants and climbed on top of him. Marta twisted and bucked with ripe desire as she gyrated on top, fixing herself until she was swallowing him, surrounding him tightly as she nibbled his chest and played with his nipples.
Marta grabbed her hips as the pleasure arched his back, him wanting more yet afraid of the unfamiliar yearning for release. Goosebumps heightened on his body and heat traveled to his face. He was red all over when he came. Princess Sa’e’s smile was callous under the cruel, dull lights. She took hold of his trembling hands and held them against the floor, leaning into him with all her weight. When she burrowed down further into him, he whimpered and called out her name. She held him down while pleasure and discomfort took hold of him, causing him to writhe and buck under her—which Princess Sa’e, holding on tightly and moaning into his ear, seemed to enjoy even more. She rolled off him once she finished and asked. “Are you okay?”
Breathing hard and shivering in the chill air, Marta could not disclose the truth. He was in a state of confusion, so he said, “Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine.” When he dared a quick glance at his member—limp, wet, and dripping—he felt shame. An immense amount of shame.
Princess Sa’e sat up. “What?” she scoffed, then laughed. “We should head to a temple and get married? Is that what you want?” She got up, sat on a lavish sofa, and lit a laced cigarette. “You would have to do more than this to become my husband.”
“Then, may I go now?” Marta asked.
“No,” Princess Sa’e answered coldly. She crossed her legs and took a long pull from her cigarette. “How do you know Sioba? Who is she to you?”
“She is nothing to me,” he sighed. Thinking about his mother, her burdensome life, saddened him. “My mother was dying and tried to marry me off before that time came. Sioba answered. I guess she’d recognized my hesitation and offered me refuge instead.”
Princess Sa’e shook her head. The dull lights played tricks on her face. Sometimes she was beautiful and innocent, and other times she appeared conniving and mischievous. “Hm, Sioba, Sioba, Si… o… ba. Always the saint when she isn’t murdering anybody. You have no other family?”
Of course, it was odd to not have a family in a culture such as theirs. Extended families were a huge part of the family unit. In fact, God created sisters, and then their husbands, just for that reason—family. But he had always known his mother to be alone. He had no one. As a child, he was even bullied for it. “Nope. None.”
“Then maybe Sioba is rightfully charitable after all.”
Marta sensed the tension in her voice. “But…”
“But that doesn’t mean that Sioba isn’t a meddling nobody. She sticks her nose in affairs not concerning her. As you know, my sister is the crown princess, but she is weak and dimwitted. Of course, I wanted the position myself, but to have her crowned is a slap to all my sisters’ faces. Anyone would have been better than her.”
“Princess Oteeb is the oldest.”
“She’s dumb. Sioba convinced my mother to crown her, saying that that’s the proper way of things.”
Still lying on the floor, Marta sat up and gestured for the cigarette. Shocked at how thin the cigarette was between his fingers, he pulled lightly, afraid it would crumble in his hands. The scent wasn’t too bad, the taste itself was bitter. In an instant, he was buzzed. “Sioba ruined my mother’s life. She sent her to the fields.”
Princess Sa’e pulled Marta up by his tunic so that he was on his knees before her. She passionately kissed him and guided him onto the sofa, though Marta was reluctant, though he knew that by going along with this, he was getting himself caught up in a scheme. The princess climbed on top of him and kissed him on the cheek.
“Then we must make her pay,” she whispered into his ear.

2023.03.23 03:51 ioncewasaking I ghosted my family a month ago
For quite some time I have been coming to realize some toxicity associated with my family that I didn't realize when I was younger. I spent 15-19 using alcohol, pills, coke and weed in moderation - some bits were recurrent and ridden with abuse, but I left my home at 19 for the military, only visiting home once a year for extended vacations. My brother (37), father, and friends continued in their habits mostly associated with alcohol, add in weed and pills for my brother and close friend. I continued drinking in the military for six years and into college for three more.
I responded positively to alcohol throughout life and still do. Since graduating college in 2021, I stayed home for a few months and picked up on the moderate abuse of coke, weed, and alcohol from my brother and friends. However, my brother negative associated behavior and attitudes permeated. It was so toxic and financially unhealthy that I had to stop. I couldn't stand it. I was running a business with film locally and ended up needing to look forward to a career. I use to lend my brother money and let him skip or be late on his cell phone bill but cut all that off early last year.
I eventually left for a new town after getting a dream career in cinematography making a very suitable salary. Each visit home since had been pretty saddening, even from afar, I experienced my brother indirect effects of how his habits affected his relationship with each parent, and continued hearing my fathers disappointment in his alcohol abuse through late night calls. More notably, the enabling that my father and mother (divorced for 30 years, living in different homes) continue to provide for my junkie brother. He gets to live for free, spends all his paycheck on habits and hobbies, is very negative and rude. They parents continue to let him borrow money, buy him cars or let him drive theirs (which he has wrecked or totaled many), and essentially get by with anything, and my mother even takes him out to bars and on beach vacations.
My brother has been to jail a few times, has been let off the hook by cops, many wrecks he's escaped, and even stopped going to his court referrals and I'm sure he probably has a warrant. He gets to lay out of work as much as he wants, although he is a damn good worker and very knowledgable in carpentry – he just can't stay away from the chemicals, learn moderation, be reasonable or responsible with his finances enough to go out on his own. He even got into meth at one point, got skinny, and was selling things, and going downhill quick eating sweets and just hanging out with the wrong crowds. He admitted to me and I knew something was up but not that. His bedroom and bathroom are always disgusting and he's now put more weight back on but hardly does anything besides drugs or alcohol. I think hunting was an excuse for him to go drink or do drugs, but he did kill a few deer this past season.
I told my brother I would only support him early last year with reasonable recovery requests but no more money. I provided him with all the in-person and virtual schedules for narcotics or alcoholics anonymous and it went nowhere. I told him to keep his work insurance to get serious help when he's ready but he cut if off for more money. Then when he got it back, he kept going to doctors to try to get more pills for his back pain. He is always looking to get with a woman who has a home and their life together and then he gets comfortable and wrecks it – always cheating and getting wasted. I'm pretty sure he has some STI's too, depression is prevalent, and anger issues exist. He's phenomenal and hilarious and a joy to be around when he is not chasing some type of high (rare).
The last time I went home, I went to a bar with mother and brother at their discretion. Usually I try to pick some nice restaurant, a park, or a hike but this bar was their idea and planned out. My mom planned on meeting a date with a guy that night and had not told my brother and I her intentions until we we're getting in the car. Weird but whatever. We get to the bar, the date seems cool but is a stoner – which is fine with me – he even has a POT SAVES LIVES tattoo on the back of his bald head. Anyway, major turnaround that my mom went from a Chief of Police husband who passed from cancer to this guy. He may be cool, but I only know of him from that night.
I was having some drinks, my brother sees an old friend who hands over pills and my brother swallows them down. He eventually calls me after going off on his own and says the bouncer won't let him in. I tried to understand why and there was a one-time entry rule unless you paid for re-entry. That wasn't my problem, I wasn't ever sure in the first place why he left. Probably to smoke some weed or something else.
He began getting irate with me because I wouldn't give him the keys to our moms car I drove. I knew that state of mind he was in by his pupils, body language, and attitude – I didn't want him getting into the car with his gun there, or attempting to drive. I went back to sitting down after informing mother that he was being chaotic. She said "lets go home," but I said "no, enjoy your date, he's a grown man and needs to face his own situation." He eventually got in the bar, came up to me asking for money for beer. I said "no" and he punched me in the ribs and said "fuck you." I was offended from that but had to over come it by going to dance by myself on the dance floor and joined some strangers in the fun to get away from him.
I ended up almost going home with a girl until the plan didn't work out – no vacancies in hotels so I got stranded when my mother took my brother to her boyfriends. I texted her and she told me they were taking my brother to some camp site he wanted to go to an hour away. Who knows who or what was there for him, but that bar was the last time I heard from him. I got the keys from my mom when she got back to where I was and I drove home to get my stuff from my dads and my car from my moms before driving back to my newfound city the next state over.
I told mother and father the next morning through text "good seeing yall. I made it back, love ya" and haven't spoke to them since. Not a word to my brother either. I saw him tore up on pills on his Snapchat story the next day saying "why does my daddy always treat me like a kid?!" while he was driving our dads truck down the road, speech slurry. I deleted him off Snap, ignored calls from my dad, and texts from all three ever since. I really just needed a break from it all and I am not sure I am ready to reconnect.
It's been pretty freeing being on my own at 30, away from home, and disconnected from them. Almost: out of sight, out of mind. Not really sure what to say when and if I get ready to reconnect. My dad's birthday is in a few weeks so maybe a card, then come mothers day, fathers day, and summer time. I just don't think any of the messages I've conveyed to them about enabling has ever gotten through to them over the years and maybe they feel some sense of purpose by supporting brother since parents are both mostly alone and used to supporting him through the last decade.
While ghosting them doesn't feel right, for me, I feel I want to ride out this disconnect from them for the long term. I love them so much but cannot ever deeply connect with them unless it's a conversation about my brother that goes nowhere. I can't barely get us together over a dinner without brother getting tore up and needing financial support. I just want to create new memories with them but most every time I find myself alone and only drinking seems like the appropriate way to tolerate the time together because we don't relate on many levels of their everyday life. I really wish they would stop enabling him, and I wish he would get his life together. I continue to drink and sometimes consume lots, but I respond positively and continue prioritizing my responsibilities while taking breaks often. This ghosting has seems to be quite new to me and I wanted to share.

2023.03.23 02:57 ThrowawaySleepovers AITA for choosing an adults only hotel for our destination wedding
TA account. Was originally going to ask about another situation (hence the name) but that resolved.
I’ll be as succinct as possible. My (newly engaged) fiancée and I are getting married in November in Mexico. We live in NY but I am a second gen immigrant so we picked a destination wedding so my extended family could easily join without visa issues.
We called today to tell my fiancées brother and sister in law were getting married in Mexico at an adults only hotel. They have two kids - 11 and 4. SIL said she doesn’t have anyone to watch the kids so they can’t come. We understood, but said since it’s March and they have several months maybe they can figure out a plan? She then added her work schedule couldn’t allow it either. My fiancée asked if his brother could still come as he really wanted his family there (besides his brother he only has a grandfather who is coming) and then SIL said it was inconsiderate that we picked a hotel that wouldn’t allow her kids and her husband wouldn’t take a trip internationally without them since they’ve never taken a family trip out of the country. The kids were in the background and could be heard yelling “let’s all go to Mexico I wanna go” Then she abruptly got silent and hung up.
I feel bad they can’t join, and briefly debated finding a new hotel - but I really like this hotel and we’ve already paid a deposit. AITA for not wanting to change hotels and stick to adults only even if that means my SIL can’t attend?
**addl note they are legally not married we just refer to her as SIL. She has always wanted to get married at a destination wedding so my fiancée thinks this is another reason she’s being grouchy towards us.
ETA: willing to take constructive feedback but anyone labeling me an AH for a destination wedding - I’m sorry I’m not sorry for that. There’s an entire industry of destination weddings.
I should have added we even offered to add them to the AirBNB that some of my family chose to stay nearby so that the kids could come on vacation. But then it became about them missing out on the all inclusive part
There was no pestering. We had a five min convo and tried to offer alternatives.

2023.03.23 00:51 Haunting-Army931 25 [M4F] Santa Clarita/Thousand Oaks/SoCal
Hello! I'm looking for someone around my age to cuddle with this weekend in Santa Clarita :) Friday night or Saturday night.
I'll be staying at a nice hotel for work - helping run a huge tournament for kids haha. I'm sure in the evening I'll be quite ready to zone out. We can maybe get some (free!) food or relax, watch a show in my room. Super chill, low pressure.
NOT looking for anything sexual. Just company 🙂 We can be platonic and fully clothed. I will 1000% respect your boundaries.
I live in the Thousand Oaks area (east Ventura County, west LA). I'd love to also find an ongoing "friend with cuddle benefits" ;)
A little about me: I'm 25M, white, 5'8. Slim, in pretty good shape. "Adorkable" I'd like to describe myself as 😅 but you can be the judge
I work with kids teaching chess and am vegan/plant-based. I don't drink, smoke or do any drugs. I'd describe myself as conscientious, gentle and compassionate. A few things I love are hiking, animals, pop punk and rock climbing.
DM me if you're interested! I will of course send pics and any other info you like.
thanks for reading and hope you have a wonderful rest of your day ☺️

2023.03.23 00:42 mykono90 Cheapest way to extend a vacation to Turks and Caicos?
I won a trip to Turks and Caicos for work and want to extend my stay by 3-4 days. I am planning to use credit card points so that this is an entirely free trip or at least very cheap.
The easiest thing to do would be to stay in Turks and Caicos, but I can’t find any reasonably priced, beautiful hotels with excellent reviews. Everything I like is insanely expensive.
My work will pay for my round trip flight to/from Turks and Caicos.
I am wondering if it would be cheaper to fly out of Turks and Caicos to another Caribbean island and then fly back in once the 3-4 extra days are over.
What are the cheapest islands to fly to from T&C & where can I get the most bang for my buck in terms of the hotels/food costs?

2023.03.23 00:23 IamHammerhead I started chewing my fingernails and couldn’t stop.
My obsession began with a humble hangnail on my pinkie finger, a digit whose function, you must agree, is entirely ornamental. The hangnail pulled loops from my sweater and threatened to make worthless my silk shirts. This superfluous shard of my personage would never amount to anything so, I bit it off. I held the keratin splinter between my teeth and touched it with the tip of my tongue. Already it felt dulled, less angry. One swallow—a spark trapped in a bottle—and I was hooked. I dare say the advertisement I put in the Gazette the very next day was more of a provocation than anything else:
Cannibal wanted. No creeps. In all my 42 years, I never was a nail-biter—I simply didn’t have the anxiety for it—but now, I was eager to celebrate the rare perfection when, after delicate nibbling, a full crescent of fingernail pulled away from my cuticle leaving a pleasantly feathered edge. Patience never was my strong suit and fingernails can take a whole month between harvests. I was fortunate, though, in that I have always been blessed with uncommon flexibility and therefore found some comfort in nibbling my toe-nails like a baby newly born.
Despite my limberness, the contortions necessary and the manner in which I had been leaning to reach the littlest piggy, caused the finger on my left hand to go completely numb. The feeling brought to mind an old friend from school who lost this very same finger to a hungry garbage disposal system. If prompted, he would insert carrots into his gloved hand and, in full view of the substitute teacher, make a big show of cutting them off. It never failed to rouse the class to laughter. I made sure to fess up to having been the one who had goaded the poor lad so he didn’t take the burden of the punishment alone. He always claimed that his missing fingers inconvenienced him not in the slightest, but he was particularly terrible at ten-pin bowling. We never liked bowling, anyway.
He was a good person, that boy. But, more often than not, people disgust me. You put one small advertisement in the Gazette and it really is amazing how many supposed cannibals want to pleasure themselves while watching someone consume their parts. Perverts! It never was a sexual thing for me. Pure cannibals are hard to find, or maybe they just never read the Gazette. Either way I couldn’t wait so long for a dining companion. Cutting off my finger was an easy decision—as natural and inevitable as cell division. Had I been a starfish my fingers would have grown a whole new me from scratch. What a lark!
It’s usually the pain that stops ordinary people from achieving anything notable in life. Anything worthy of the Gazette. But pain of the person fades in time. Pain of the mind persists. For example: I don’t recall the pain of crashing my motorcycle into a willow when I was young and foolish, but I recall, with absolute clarity, my sweetheart leaving me while I was still in traction. She said she didn’t want to go to the prom with a cripple. My legs healed in time but my heart was eternally broken. That’s real pain right there. If the most painful thing you ever feel in life is a silly little finger being lopped off then you haven’t really lived.
Decision. Precision. Incision. All in quick succession. That’s how you do it.
I tied a rubber band around my pinkie until it was numb and laid it on the bread board then popped it off with a chef’s knife. It came away more easily and with much less sensation than I expected. I inserted the severed digit in my mouth—wider, wider, a little wider—like a dentist might. My real-life dentist was always too insistent, too certain of his ability to enter me. I bit his finger once (okay, maybe more than just once). I caught him off guard—or as off guard as you can when dealing with a man whose entire professional life is spent with his hands in the mouths of beasts. He must surely have seen it coming. Nevertheless, he referred me to another dentist.
I clamped down hard on my severed finger and ran my tongue over the satisfyingly deep dent left in the flesh by my molars. It had the texture of pig knuckles. Not that I recall that particular dish with much clarity. I’ve been a vegetarian for thirty years. No harm, no fowl—no fish or steak. Eating my own flesh doesn’t hurt anyone. It just makes me a cannibal-vegetarian which is more ethical than most people.
Take my sister for example: she loves her stupid fox terrier like a child but she still eats meat which makes her both cruel and a terrible hypocrite. Nevertheless, she still insists we get together for Christmas.
”What the hell is the difference between eating dogs and cows?” I asked her, on the phone. And when I said “dogs” I meant humans.
“Cow’s don’t have personalities,” was her reply, which is entirely not true.
“Would you prefer I cook you an animal you hated?” I asked.
”Yes,” she agreed, and I knew immediately that she regretted her offer of driving all the way to visit me in New Orleans for Christmas dinner.
“What animal do you hate the most?” I asked. “I’m serious.”
I already knew what she was thinking. I just wanted to hear her say it. She had never hated anyone more than her ex-husband or possibly me. Either way, the animal she hated most was most definitely human but she said, “Pigs, I guess,” and by “pigs” she meant me.
“Good. That settles it. I’ll cook pork with cherry glaze,” I lied.
Now, obviously, a few stray knuckles can’t possibly form the centerpiece of Christmas dinner and, anyway, me-knuckle-and-pea soup had already demonstrated itself as more suitable for an appetizer. Still, I kicked myself for eating my four fingers first because it made it extremely difficult to amputate my leg at the knee. The lower leg: now there is a versatile cut of meat. You can cut along the length of the calf muscle for a juicy loin or cut across the bones for chops if you have a bandsaw, which I didn’t, of course, on account of living in a residential area with strict zoning laws. But that doesn’t prevent you from smoking a loin or make excellent sausages. I had a devil of a time removing my lower leg and none of the perverts who responded to my advertisement in the Gazette had the prerequisite nursing skills to assist with the amputation. I administered the local anesthetic myself and it worked fine enough but the knee joint was tough and rather complicated to cut through and, in spite of my keen interest in anatomy, I was certainly no doctor. Still, I had committed to hosting Christmas lunch and I was determined to harvest a tasty loin. My sister and may have had our differences but, she is my sister after all and you have to make an effort.
When she arrived, she insisted on bringing with her a special friend named George. Poor George had tried to enliven his wallflower personality with a festive reindeer sweater. I liked him immediately and not just because he worked in Germany as a surgeon, no less. My sister gasped at the sight of my missing fingers and still fresh amputation below the knee. But I told her not to worry about me. I pretended that my old motorcycle accident had effected my circulatory system. I then garnished the white lie with a case of diabetes I never had. It was Christmas, after all. Everyone loves a tall tale. I followed that up with a loin of leg in a cherry glaze.
“I’m so glad you’re no longer a vegetarian,” she said, while attempting not to pity me. “You need to keep your strength up in your condition.”
“I’m still vegetarian,” I said, as I poured extra cherry glaze on her plate. “Just don’t tell anyone.”
My sister thought the pork/I was a little tough and didn’t mind saying so, but George wanted the recipe before he returned to Cologne. He had never read the Gazette but, when he followed me to the library in search of a recipe book, he insisted on examining my wound in a way that suggested that he might have answered the advertisement himself, had he been a subscriber. He could tell right away there was no hospital involved in the amputation and he said that his grandfather had reared pigs for Schinken ham in the most beautiful little corner of the Black Forest so he knew a thing or two about pork. He wheeled me back to the dining table and helped himself to a third helping of “pork” before we opened presents. My sister said it was a pleasant lunch and George even did the washing up on account of my missing fingers.
They both left in good spirits.
When I say “left” I mean George returned the very next day for leftovers. He brought his suitcase and medical kit and examined my limbs with the upmost professionalism.
“I think it might need to come off,” I suggested, as he scrutinized my legs and arms. He agreed every time.
“Yes it will. And that too. It will all need to be removed, eventually,” he said. I made sure to leave a copy of the Gazette on the counter so there could be no confusion on the subject.
Judging by how frequently my sister called his cell phone, I think she was in love with poor George. She rang at the most inappropriate hour because she thought he was back in Cologne which he wasn’t. He was usually asleep on the sofa with a belly full of flesh on account of us having turned the second bedroom into an operating room. Eventually George said it would be suspicious if he didn’t answer so we played Kraftwerk and Marlene Dietrich in the background (though not at the same time) to make it sound like he might have been in Cologne. I thought we did a good job of keeping up our little charade, but I only had those two albums and, anyway, I still think it was my sister who eventually called the police.
After we harvested another “ham’ it was clear that both George’s surgical and culinary skills were far superior to mine. His grandparents must have been true artisans when it came to pork. Throughout the spring, I watched my biceps grow meaty from maneuvering the new wheel chair. I suspect George’s grandfather must have shared the same excitement at watching his sows grow plump and delicious as the slaughter season approached. From the comfort of my Creole townhouse in The Marigny, my body had become my very own Black Forest. We lived in a land of plenty. George, being German and in possession of a rapier wit, named my right arm Hansel and my left Gretel which, of course, made me the wicked witch.
You might think me worse than wicked—a barbarian perhaps—but I caused no more harm to the world beyond my walls than the old lady who swallowed a fly.
George wouldn’t harm a fly either, which is exactly what I told the police when they visited. They saw my diminished state and expressed concern about his capacity to care for me. I pointed out that he was a qualified doctor, a surgeon no less, but it was clear they thought he had nefarious intent. The larger of the policemen sat in my most comfortable chair, a recliner, and explained that George had, allegedly, cared for four other men in Cologne who had all undergone unnecessary amputations before their demise. I thanked the officers for their concern and promised to report any unusual behavior but I was shaking inside. My stomach felt hollow and I was in a constant sweat. I had been betrayed: the fact that George had already consumed someone else before our meeting was certainly news to me.
When he returned with the groceries (vegetables and herbs mainly, for we had all the meat we needed) I beat him with my stumps until the sutures ruptured. I cried and told him I would go no further. He apologized and soothed me by showing me what ordinary people who have never spanked their Frankfurt in public refer to as food-porn. It was this he wanted me to become. He assured me that I was the sweetest of all the men he had had the pleasure of eating. This was, I suspect, a direct result of my cannibal-vegetarian diet. You are what you eat, after all. People eat bad things, generally speaking, and I’m not just referring to junk food. Some make a whole performance of eating cars and trucks and bicycles and all manner of things that simply can’t be eaten for that stupid Guinness book of records. People eat rocks, drywall, cars, soiled diapers, live bees, batteries and light bulbs and bedsprings just because they feel like it. I guess humans are like worms through which the entire world must pass. Me? I am a loop in time: leftovers consuming leftovers.
And in the end, who needs to leave behind something so ungainly as a body?
You would be surprised at how many parts of your body you can do without too. I’m a stickler for research—ask anyone. George said that in WWII surgeons performed the first half-ectomy on fighter pilots crushed beneath their instrumentation. Surgeons sliced them in half like a magic act—tadaa! The patients survived and would have survived longer had they not been inclined to bouts of depression and taken their own lives. I guess they couldn’t see the magic in it. But I could.
Tadaa!
I must say, if ever there is such a thing as magic in the world then it comes in the form of phantom limb syndrome. After George performed my half-ectomy, I had no hips from which to leap, no shoulder joints from which to hurl a ball and yet I have never felt more active. My phantom limbs ran for miles along Elysen Fields Avenue and north, through the Rocky Mountains, all the way to Alaska. My arms swam down the Mississippi and out to sea and through the hurricanes and didn’t stop until they reached South America and the upper reaches of the Brazilian Rainforest. My phantom limbs were proficient in all manner of sports I never asked them to engage in. But when I looked down there was just air where the pumping limbs might have been. What was the point in all that exercise if my eyes called my body a liar? I had no choice but to ask George to remove them. When I say “them” I mean my eyes. We ate one each, lightly seared in a pan with onions and lemon. The imagination is far more active without sight. My hearing became more acute, my olfactory senses keener. I highly recommend it.
I could tell the police had returned by the weary way they walked, weighed down by radios and guns and the foolishness of their investigation. Unfortunately, this time George was home. I tried to explain away my diminished size and pointed out that my eyes had turned septic (and by “septic” I mean delicious) but they took George away for questioning anyway. He was away a long time.
I am not the nervous sort, but I did indeed start to panic. I called George’s name but the only reply was the gulls keening outside my window. I fell asleep and woke up and was not sure how many hours had passed but there were no more gulls so it was surely night. My ileostomy bag had over-flowed and my flesh was contaminated with the foulest smell. What if George didn’t return? Who would be my dinner companion? I couldn’t eat all this food by myself. When eventually the front door creaked opened and George called my name, his voice was shaking. The police had held him for two days and nights under the pretense of asking questions. As he carried me to the bathroom to clean me up, he was not moving well. He laid me in the tub and I could smell the nervous sweat that had dried on his shirt. He favored his left arm and there was a catch in his breath that told me his ribs were badly bruised.
“Did they beat you?” I asked.
“Sticks and stones,” he said, but I knew he envied me. You can’t beat a man who isn’t there.
He wiped away the crusted seepage that had spilled from my ileostomy bag and floated me in the fresh water. Had George not been a cannibal he could have found a job drawing baths in the nicest hotel in New Orleans. It’s not as easy as turning the water on, you know. You need to get the humidity of the room just right and the temperature of the water within a precise range. When you do, your body feels weightless and your breath invisible. I heard George open a glass bottle and listened as a few drops of lavender bath oil perfumed the room. It was sublime but there was certainly nothing sexual about the moment. How could there be? My sex had been removed in the half-ectomy along with everything below the navel. Yes, it’s true that George and I had both eaten my penis and testicles but it was far from a meal with erotic overtones. In fact, George had made Zürcher Geschnetzeltes which is a Swiss German dish usually made with veal. Cooked to perfection, he served it with a mushroom and white-wine sauce so aromatic that it made me wish I had testicles growing all over my body like mushrooms from which to harvest. When George eventually lifted me from my bath, he gently laid me on a towel and rubbed lotion into my scar tissue.
“How much is left?” I asked.
The scales scraped on the tile floor and George folded a towel in quarters for padding. Even after we ate my eyes, George always balanced me upright on my spine so, in my mind’s eye, I could look down and see my weight.
“Fourty-eight pounds,” he said. “I could check you as luggage.”
He cleaned my teeth with a new brand of toothpaste that tasted like red Tic-Tacs and took me to bed. He no longer slept on the sofa. At two-foot tall, I was smaller than the overpriced teddy bear I used to sleep with as a kid. I could tell he was tired on account of being interrogated by the police without sleep for two days but he wanted to talk about something. Finally he said: “What should I make for my first meal alone?”
I had not kept track of our meals but, from the way we had feasted and the sound of the single bag of flesh clanking around in the chest-freezer, I knew our supply was getting low. Without ever having to leave New Orleans, we had taken a culinary tour of all of Bavaria and the Rhineland. We had eaten bratwurst and liverwurst with senf; königsberger klopse meatballs; sauerbraten pot roast; schweinshaxe and speck; and baked the leftovers into a
leberkäse-style meatloaf. The neighbors must have thought we were opening a restaurant. Ultimately, though, there was one meal I couldn’t share with George: the meal that would finish me . He could eat my beef-heart stew or spread my brains on toast with parsley and lemon but it was Christmas again. The festive season.
“I don’t want you to eat alone,” I told George. “Take my sister to midnight mass then treat her to a good old-fashioned Réveillon feast.”
It’s a Creole tradition in these parts, to feast until dawn. I wanted to swim in a bouillabaisse with the freshest sea scallops or be pureed with leeks and truffle cream. I imagined the searing heat of applewood smoked bacon against my lightly grilled cheek. I wanted George to swallow the last of me and know me more completely than I ever could.
He called my sister and extended the invite. She seemed distant and nervous which I thought was on account of her still being in love with George, herself. In hindsight there was clearly someone listening.
On Christmas day the house was filled with the aroma of sauce and spice and I was confident that this would be a feast like no other. Then my ears picked out the familiar lumbering step on my porch and I knew something was wrong. The door burst off its hinges and somewhere among the men’s voices I could hear my hysterical sister. She was weeping and swearing and it was clear she was not going to stay for dinner. The police handcuffed George and he cried out in pain.
“Don’t hurt him!” I yelled, but no one cared to listen.
A pair of hands transported me to a dog carrier which smelled of piss from frightened animals. The very idea that I might try to escape was completely absurd. I screamed and shouted and called them all manner of names that I am embarrassed to repeat. Someone turned off the stove and took the chest-freezer into evidence. Our Christmas was ruined.
No one listened to me at George’s trial. All they wanted to know was whether I was of sound mind. It was clear to everyone that I was. I even had my lawyer show them the letter I wrote last Christmas when I had hands and was not yet the distillation of my former self. But they didn’t care. They found him guilty and put George on death row where he will never eat anything as delicious as me again.
I hope beyond hope that when he is served his last meal, that they come for me in my hospital bed and cut out my tongue and give half to him and half to me. No sauce, no salt, no pepper or spice. Just raw and bloody. A final kiss under the cannibal’s mistletoe.

2023.03.22 21:56 EntireActivity6587 Cancelled hotel booking 2 weeks before wedding. Deposit paid gave us no rights.
(Scotland) I think this a long shot but I'd be grateful for any advice. I'm getting married in 2 weeks and the hotel where all my family were going to be staying have just cancelled our reservation out of the blue. They say it is because they need to give preference to a corporate customer who wants to extend their booking. We had paid the 50% deposit all the way back in November and had been told on the phone that this secured our reservation. The remaining balance was due any time before checking in.
I've now checked the terms and conditions and they do indeed say that the hotel can cancel any time before receiving the final balance. T&Cs were provided with the invoice. (I don't know whether t&cs were provided before payment of the deposit. It wasn't me who made the booking and it may have been on the phone.) My question is whether that is an unfair contract? The hotel required a 50% deposit but we now know that deposit got us no rights at all. They could cancel at any time and we hadn't realised. However, we wouldn't have been able to cancel without losing our deposit.
The reason this is all such a pain is that it's now extremely hard to find suitable accommodation close to the wedding venue. My parents are pensioners with mobility issues (hip replacement *3, knee replacement, recent operation) and my sisters have very young children.
(I've been making the point to the hotel that doing this will be very bad for their reputation. We will write bad reviews and my future wife and I but not my family live locally so will of course be venting about this to friends and neighbours. That is getting some traction with the hotel, but I wondered about any legal aspect.)
Many thanks for any insight you can offer!

2023.03.22 20:34 Level_Echidna9906 Advice for short itinerary
Hi everyone, I am trying to do solo travel for the first time in Thailand. I am an international student studying in the US and planning to stop in Thailand on my way to India during summer. I chose such a route because tickets were cheaper this way. My plan is to arrive in Bangkok and stay there for maybe 5 days and then leave for India.
I am not really a vacation person yet, I am mainly planning to visit some historical sites for my own intellectual pleasure. From what I read online, the best idea would be to visit Bangkok, Sukhothai and Chang Mai.
Is it a good idea to book a hotel for 5 days in Bangkok and go to other places? As I am planning to return to India from Thailand after 5 days maybe. I am not even sure if 5 days are enough. These 5 days are apart from the flight time from US. I can also extend the 5 day period to a week maybe. Thanks

2023.03.22 18:43 crossrolls Uber/Lyft from the airport at around 10PM
Are Ubers and Lyft from the Santa Fe airport still available around 10PM? I heard there are no more taxi services in Santa Fe and was wondering if it's better to go for a late-night flight from ABQ rather than going for a direct flight to SAF that arrives around 10pm.
UPDATE: Seems there's a consensus -- probably not a good idea to get the late-night SAF flight then. The hotel gave me numbers of private drivers (not Ubers) but not sure about how reimbursement works out so I guess better to go with ABQ then. Thanks everyone!

2023.03.22 00:32 Alpha_Hotel89 34 Years Old, Non-Prior, ARNG 18X - Need Honest Feedback.
TL;DR - 34 Year Old, Airline pilot, pretty fit, is crazy enough think he can become SF with ARNG...INPUT REQUIRED. Please and thanks.
Ok, here it goes. First off, I'll spare you all my speech for wanting to serve, feeling the call to service etc. I wouldn't be here if that was not the case. I am a 34 year old civilian commercial airline pilot (yes, passenger jets). It's a fantastic job with many perks and great pay, but I still find myself wanting more and feel the beckon to the military and service still at 34. Backstory: Plan A was to fly fighter jets with the ANG but COVID threw a wrench into things and I aged out for fighter jets - age waivers are very hard to get with fighters. I was working as a flight instructor at the time and ended taking the airline job once I became qualified. Also, the pay is substantially better. Anyway, fast forward. Here I am, an airline guy who stays in shape. Now, I am in *good* shape. I've been an athlete most of my life (play hockey, regularly lifting). But, I am not in *stellar* shape. In other words, at this point I would need to train up/hard for the next 8 to 12 months to get where I'd need to be for SFAS. I'll be 35 at that point.
5'9" 175. I'm fairly quick but don't have stamina with regard to running (when I feel fresh I can do sub 7:30 min/mi), Working on that. I have good upper body strength, I generally do weighted (add 25-30lbs) dips and pull ups/chin ups in gym. Again, when I'm fresh I could easily bang out at least 50 pushups in 2 min. Arms are long, so I struggle with developing my arms but I certainly get stronger overall. Have a few minor nagging things I have to be aware of including a knee (strained it once while hiking lol), shoulder and bicep. None of these things are current hinderances, they are just past injuries from sports etc. But as they say, those can come back to haunt you.
The challenge for me is going to be getting in shape and avoiding injury while working an airline schedule while not getting younger. I essentially live out of hotels over half of the month and not all hotel gyms are created equal. Not far off from what I would experience at SFAS, we're typically working long days (except we sit on our asses) and commonly have to work through fatigue from waking up at 0400 in a different time zone. Some days are genuinely challenging and mentally taxing. So I know what mental mush feels like. I think...
I understand the odds will be stacked against me, but here's how I am wired: "Anything worth doing, is worth doing well." I'm a competitive dude who wouldn't be satisfied with just enlisting or even commissioning (I have a college degree) and taking some whatever job flying a desk on drill weekends (then again, I haven't reached a point in my life where that seems appealing in any way). I understand I would be taking an extended pause from flying - which is ok with me if I make this decision given the right reasons. If I do this, I see no other way than going *all the way*.
If I do this, it will be 18X through the Guard either 19th or 20th SF groups. Haven't decided yet. I have a super supportive GF who understands all of the implications. Am I insane to think I can do this? I already have a cushy civilian lifestyle and understand that this will be a potentially life altering pivot in my long term trajectory. When I come out of training, assuming best case scenario, like earning a green beanie, is it possible to be a special forces operator and have a civilian career? Is that unrealistic? Is this a pipedream? Need the all the honesty here guys, and thanks for the read.

2023.03.21 23:30 HeathenBliss Should I be worried
Posting this for a friend who is too lazy to start their own reddit account lol
Okay, this is gonna be long. TLDR at the end
So, my bf and I havent had the best relationship, and, in December we almost broke up. We've been together for two years, and we've been through a lot together, but I feel like he always wants more than Im ready for. Right now we live with roommates, but he's really set on getting our own apartment. He paid to have the lease extended six months ago because I begged him, but he said he's only on board until May and then we either need to move in together or move on from each other, which I dont think is fair. Im enjoying living with my friends and Im not sure Im ready to move past that yet.
I have to admit that a lot of our issues are on me, but again, I feel like he just expects too much for right now and if he'd just chill out, things would be fine.
Im trying to work on myself and when I feel like Im ready, I'll actually be 100% on board with moving in to our own place together and stuff like that, but for right now, Im just trying to focus on me and he doesn't understand that I can't rush that.
Last night , he sent me a text that said he felt like he was already functionally single and he was tired of waiting for me to decide that I wanted to work on the relationship.
Some of the reasons he gave:
He said We never spend time together. - Not true. He gets mad because when I get off work I usually spend the evening hang out with my best friend and smoke, but I always make sure he gets ten or fifteen minutes before I go to sleep for me and him to talk or chill when Im done chilling with her. I don't think this is fair because Ive been friends with this girl since high school and he doesnt understand that if he just waits until my day off, I'll hang out and watch a movie with him or something, but for right now, Im just trying to chill with my friends. He doesnt smoke, so he cant be around us when we do, but he has plenty of video games and hobbies to keep himself busy until it's a better time.
He also said that we never have sex anymore. This one is true. He gives me head sometimes but I dont want to do anal because it takes a lot of energy and I have an anxiety that makes it hard for me to enjoy sex because it terrifies me that our roommates might hear. He wants to get a hotel room on weekends but I keep telling him its a waste of money because we need to be saving and Im just going to go home and sleep in my own bed anyways after we have sex. I also don't like to have sex a lot. It frustrates him that we've only had sex three or four times in the last year, but I keep pointing out that sex isn't really that important in the grand scheme of things but he doesn't agree.
Hes also mad that he sleeps on the couch, but I cant do anything about that. I can't share my bedroom because my bed's not big enough and I dont like sharing a bed anyways. He knew that when he chose to move in with us, so its not a problem im really sympathetic to.
Theres a lot more but it would take too much time to Say it all.
My perspective is... I don't have time to focus on a serious relationship. Im tryna chill with my friends and work full time and get a promotion and work on myself also. But whenever I say that, he tells me he's going to leave if I don't start making time for him, and I don't like him threatening that. I just need him to chill out and things will get better but his negative attitude isnt helping and I can't rush progress or put a timer on How long it's going to take me to feel confident putting more energy into the relationship.
Anyways, he travels for work and can stay out as long as he wants since he owns the business and he finished his text by saying that the next time he went out (a couple of weeks from now) he was going to stay gone until either I said I was ready to focus on us or he got tired of waiting. His exact words.
And today, he turned off his location on his iphone and snap accounts.
I dont want him to leave me. He's tried and it makes me feel like a shitty person whenever he does. Ive told him that I dont like it when he makes me feel thet way. He acts like I dont love him, which I do, even if I don't say it or show it much. Hes the best person Ive ever been with after multiple abusive relationships. I need him see that if he has patience, things will work out, but I cant get him to understand that and have patience with me like I need.
Should I be worried?
TLDR. My bf of two years is frustrated that we don't spend the kind of time he wants to spend together and that I have the relationship ln the back burner until I finish working on me and my life to be completely stable. He told me he's running out of patience, but I told Him I can't rush progress and if he has some more patience and looks on the bright side, everything will be okay. He said he's getting ready to just go on a work trip and not come back and Im wondering if I need to be worried that he'll actually leave me.

2023.03.21 21:00 The_Fallen_1 [THJVerse] Arcane Starfarers - ep 1 - To the stars
Hi all, I’m back with the full series following on from my last mini-series, Angland U. If you haven’t read it, I would highly recommend it, as it serves as a prologue and an easy entry into the THJ Universe, which started with
The Hunter’s Journey. I have tried to make it so reading THJ isn’t necessary if you read the
prologue, but it will provide more insight into the world than my prologue will (it’s a lot easier to go into the full depths of something with around 2,000 pages than it is with around 40-50 after all.)
Fair warning, there will be some adult themes in the series, so reader discretion is advised.
So, without further ado, enjoy!
-----------------------------
Prologue / Previous / Next
-----------------------------
Daniel rolled his left arm in its socket as he read his new assignment once more, excited to finally be getting out of constant lessons, training, and parades. He shut off the holoviewer and retracted it back into his bionic arm, allowing his hand to snap back into place, banging the back of it a couple times to make sure it was seated properly, and letting out a small sigh of relief that it was still holding up after so much punishment in basic training. He quickly checked his bags once more, making sure he had everything on him, completed one final check of the room, and then exited it. He walked down the hallway and hopped into the lift, heading down to the ground floor. Once there, he walked over to the reception, where he checked out of the hotel, and then made his way over to the hotel's subway entrance.
Upon entering the subway, he identified the military door and scanned his pass, letting him through the secure door to the private platform, where a half filled carriage was waiting. He quickly boarded and found a seat, watching the door for another 30 seconds before they closed and the carriage began to move. Less than a minute later, the carriage slowed to a halt at the other platform, and everyone began to disembark. Once he was off, Daniel quickly pulled his uniform straight, making sure the creases were still crisp and that his brassard was sitting correctly, before touching his headdress to make sure it was on straight, and he then began to walk up the stairs and left the subway.
Looking out onto the runway, he spotted his transport almost completely loaded, a massive 350 metre wide behemoth of a flying wing, an ASWT-16. As he walked towards the military security terminal of the spaceport, two privates stood to attention and saluted him, which he acknowledged quickly so they could get back to their business. He scanned his pass on the security terminal, and then walked through the attached gate, scanning him and finding nothing of concern. He quickly removed his headdress now that he was on an active airfield, and stored it in his bag before jumping on the nearby shuttle bus, which collected a few more people before the doors closed and silently drove towards the transport, coming to a stop just before the ramp. Everyone quickly disembarked, and the bus headed back to the gate the instant the last person was off, and then the group all quickly boarded the transport, rushing to get one of the better seats. Daniel didn’t rush though, and instead headed to the subtly comfier seats with an actual real window that peeked over the surface of the wing, reserved for officers like himself, and he stuffed his bags under it.
As he waited for boarding and loading to wrap up, he flicked his metal hand back and checked his messages on his holo once again, looking to see if any of his family or friends had responded. As expected, he had a quick good luck message from his Dad, and absolutely nothing from his Mother, but all his childhood and University friends had responded, barring the one person he really wanted to hear from. He knew she had read it, the app indicated as such, but she hadn’t responded. He hoped she was just writing a really long message congratulating him and wishing him luck, but he couldn’t just help but worry that she hadn’t taken the news well.
He forced it out of his mind as the loading ramp began to close and the transport crew called out their final checks. He raised both his arms off of his lap as a crew member checked to make sure his belt was on, and once the crew member had checked everyone on the row, they found their own seat and sat down. Less than two minutes later, a low rumble could be heard as all twelves thrusters roared to full power, and the transport began to quickly accelerate down the runway, taking off with its full 4,000 tonne load.
Daniel watched the fields blitz past out the window, each one getting smaller and smaller as they ascended faster and faster, until he could just about make out the curvature of the Earth, feeling a small jolt as the thrusters switched from their air breathing modes to their vacuum modes. It didn’t take long until all he could see out of his tiny window was the black void of space above the wing. The wing in question suddenly became a hub of activity as numerous panels began to wing open or retract, allowing a pylon with a long pod on the end to raise up, which began to glow a dull blue as the star formations visible to him began to distort.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention please,” one of the crew members began. “We are now at warp, and it is safe to walk around the craft. ETA for Mars orbit is 30 minutes, so please make sure you are buckled back in before that happens. The gravity generator isn’t the strongest on a transport like this, so the docking manoeuvres could pose a danger. Also, please don’t enter the cargo grid, gravity is weaker there, and any magnetic objects could be ripped from your body. I don’t fancy having to retrieve your body for the medic because a piercing got ripped out.”
Daniel looked over to the other passengers, noticing that one of the plain clothes personnel was grimacing and holding their legs tight together, while their friend next to them bumped their shoulder with a poorly masked grin. He shook his head and got to his feet, giving them a stretch while he had the chance, and checked his holo to see that it was now disconnected from the network as expected. He snapped his hand back into place, finding that the connection for his little finger wasn’t engaging properly, so he gave the back of his hand a firm smack and thankfully managed to regain control of his extremity.
“Should probably get that looked into, Sir,” the Lieutenant sitting next to him said.
“Yeah, I’ve got a replacement ordered. It’s been messed up since basic, and I’ve finally gotten approval for the latest model,” Daniel explained.
“Is requisition that bad at the moment?”
“Only for the full suite I need.”
“What do you need that’s in short supply?”
“Sorry, but that’s need to know,” Daniel told him, knowing that the parts weren’t restricted information to someone of his rank, but he was still happy to use it to avoid unwanted conversation at the moment.
“Of course, sir. My apologies for asking.”
“No harm done,” Daniel assured him as he straightened his shirt and made his way towards the front of the transport.
He opened the doorway into a corridor, and then immediately made his way into the office space, taking a seat in one of the four cubicles and logging into one of the computers, pleased to see that his travel profile had been uploaded before takeoff. The data was sparse, but it was all he needed at the moment, which was mainly the bios of his soon to be subordinates, and more importantly interview and trainer notes. None of them had any real world experience in the world of electronic subterfuge, though they did all pass the training and tests with perfect grades like him, even if the tests missed off a few handy tricks he’d utilised on occasion. It meant that he would likely be irreplaceable if the ship was in a dangerous situation, though he knew that would be the case just from him being in a position of authority. He was a little disappointed by the prospect of almost always having to be at his post, but such was Navy life.
He continued to look more closely at their bios, making a mental note of the comments made against them. They all seemed to be by the book types, which means that he would have to teach them some dirty tricks at some point, but it at least meant that he wasn’t likely to have a rough time with them. They all originated from various colonies though, so he was wary of the tribalism that could cause. It should have been trained out of them so they all acted as a single unit, but pride was often something hard rooted.
“Five minutes till Mars!” a crew member shouted into the room, before moving onto the next.
Daniel took his que to wipe his profile in case it got missed due to tight schedules, and logged off. It might not be his responsibility to do so, but he’d be damned if someone else messed up and he and his new team got hurt for it. He left the cubical and made his way back to his seat, buckling in and allowing himself to be inspected once again.
He looked out the window once again as the warp pylon powered down and the distortion effect stopped causing the green and blue surface of Mars to take up the majority of his view. It remained in his view for only a few moments though, as the transport began to turn and roll as it aligned with the station. The warp pylons quickly stowed themselves in the wings again, and the transport edged forward, sliding into the hangar after a minute or two of travel. There was a small bump as the craft touched down, followed by a droop as the hangar’s gravity was turned up to normal levels.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Mars Stardock 02. Please disembark to allow for unloading of supplies,” the crew member from before announced.
Not wanting to get caught in the crowd, Daniel jumped up from his seat, picked up his bags quickly, and was the fourth person to exit the transport. He looked at the unloading tractors that were entering the room, noticing that they had a particularly large one usually reserved for ship modules. He was surprised that something like that would be coming from Earth given Mars’ manufacturing capabilities, but he probably couldn’t find out what it was without putting his rank at risk, so he elected to ignore it. Instead, he headed over to the hangar exit and scanned his pass, confirming his presence aboard the station.
As he began to walk down the corridor of the station, following the signs for the habs, he checked his messages once more, finding that he still hadn’t received the message he was hoping for. He did his best to hide his frustration, and continued on until he reached the nearest short stay habs, walking past the honeycomb array of pods designed to pack in the lower ranking spacemen of visiting ships if the ships weren’t serviceable. Thankfully for him however, he was able to keep walking until he reached the officer’s cabins, picking an empty one and assigning it to himself.
His temporary accommodation was little more than a small bed, a desk, and a stool, but it served his needs. He dropped his bags on his bed, and quickly activated his arm’s scanners, checking the room for any bugs, which he found none of. He knew there was practically no way of someone knowing which room he’d end up in, but he couldn’t be too careful. Happy that he was safe, he opened the makeshift compartment on his arm, removing the memory chip that had sat there for almost five years at this point. He carefully hid it in the ceiling light cover, and exited the room, locking the door behind him. He knew that after five years of no-one looking for it that was probably safe, but he wasn’t going to take the risk.
He began to look at the station signs again, managing to find a layout map. He quickly committed it to memory the best he could, and made his way to the station’s clinic. Once he finished the short walk there, he checked himself in, and was assigned to a room, which he entered and sat down on the bed within it. He let out a small sigh as he looked around the room, waiting for the doctor to arrive, and began to study all the posters and displays, containing information on a bunch of medical advice that was inapplicable to him.
“Sorry about the wait,” an old and balding man in a medical uniform apologised to him as he entered the room, carrying a large long black case.
“It’s not a problem,” Daniel assured him.
“I’m Dr Middleton,” the Doctor informed him. “Now, may I just confirm your identity please?”
“Lieutenant Commander Daniel Hardbrooks,” Daniel replied, handing over his military ID.
“... Indeed you are. Just a couple of quick questions before we get onto why you’re here. Can you please confirm the purpose of your visit?” the Doctor asked, handing his ID back.
“To receive a replacement mechanical prosthetic arm, containing equipment I am not allowed to disclose.”
“And can I confirm that you don’t need a socket upgrade?”
“No, I have the latest socket after my last one broke during basic training.”
“Perfect,” the Doctor replied, checking a few boxes on his holo display. “Will you be recycling your old arm, or will you keep it?”
“Recycle. This thing will probably break if you look at it wrong,” he explained, taking off his shirt and holding up his scratched and dented arm.
“A mk IV-C. I’m surprised it’s still working. Well, you’ve got a nice new mk XXII-NM. I’m pleased to inform you that a starsteel heatsink was successfully sourced, as well as some other components that are simply blank on my display,” the Doctor told him as he handed Daniel the case. “The profile from your old arm has been transferred onto this one, but you will have to map any new functions.”
“Of course,” Daniel replied, pressing the lock and allowing the case to scan him.
After almost ten seconds of waiting, the locks popped off, and the lid opened to reveal his new arm. It looked almost like a real arm in shape, except he had given it a custom carbon black with white trim paint scheme, and replaced the plates that visually simulated muscle with armour and electronics. Happy with his new appendage, he grabbed hold of his current arm and popped it out of its socket, laying it on the nearby table before picking up his new arm and locking it in place, checking to make sure the seal engaged properly.
He rolled his shoulder, surprised at how smooth the motion was, making him realise just how bad his old arm was performing. He then began to twist his arm and wrist while flexing his fingers, finding that each motion felt like it had less purpose, but they instead felt much more natural like his real arm. He then performed a systems check, making sure none of the secret stuff was displayed, before giving the doctor a thumbs up.
“It’s working perfectly. Thank you for your help,” he told the Doctor as he put his shirt back on.
“You’re very welcome. Please tap here to confirm your appointment has been completed,” the Doctor instructed, pointing at his holo display.
“There. All done,” Daniel replied, performing the action.
“Thank you very much. Any issues and concerns, please check back here or to any other military approved clinic as soon as possible.”
“Will do. Thanks once again for your help,” Daniel told him as he left the clinic.
Daniel made his way straight back to his hab, entering it and testing out his new scanner, finding it to return the same readings of his room, but he could now read practically every electromagnetic and aetheric signature within half a kilometre, with the larger signals of the station’s fusion generators easily detectable from almost two kilometres away. Satisfied, he quickly retrieved the memory chip from the light cover, and stored it within the new secret high security compartment he now possessed.
Satisfied, he left his room once more and entered one of the nearest lifts. He punched in the button for the observation deck, and braced himself slightly as the lift accelerated rapidly, bringing him to his destination in a matter of seconds. He stepped out of the lift and into what was essentially a ball of transparent metal, overlooking the whole station. He walked over to the edge, and took in the sight of the disk shaped station floating over the distant Martian landscape. He could just about make out some of the smaller hangars from his vantage point, but what he was more interested in was the docking arms on the outside of the disk.
He could make out three corvettes dock on a single arm, and another one on an arm of its own. The next three arms were empty, with the next two servicing a frigate each, followed by three arms servicing destroyers. He was able to identify the classes of the destroyers, identifying two as direct combat ships, and the third as a light drone carrier. Finally, he rested his eyes on a single ship taking up two arms that were far longer than the others, the expedition cruiser, CNS Trailmaker.
His soon to be new home.
