After getting tired by the constant appraisal and valerization of the Indian Army despite the crimes they have committed, the censorship and calls for censorship on anyone who shows the not-so-positive image of them, the lame excuses and justifications that they give (which for some reason our people blindly believe, like do you REALLY think that the world's second largest military force, the fourth most powerful military and that has the third largest defence budget in the world, is NOT gonna lie about their own crimes in order to save their image, continue their crimes, attract and recruit more future war criminals and attract more investors and privatize their rapidly growing industry further, which they are currently trying to do btw), and even getting cheered on for it, I thought it might be good to vent out my frustrations with the establishment by sharing an entire list of the Indian Armed Forces human rights violations, massacres, sexual violence and war crimes.
Coz there sure ain't no better way to instill patriotism amongst my fellow citizens than to remind them that the forces meant to "protect" them, are actually doing the very opposite of that, and how thanks to the draconian ASFPA, they can face little to no consequences from their actions. /s

last 4 years ago, february 2019, i knew him from a random autoplay on youtube. i even had myself grounded that time for using my phone too long so i took my dad's old laptop downstairs and did some shit there until it happened to that.

the next month (march 17, 2019) i wasn't even supposed to come as i haven't been into concerts my whole life. and the next thing i knew, i was at his concert at a small theatre. despite my money for the tickets got stolen and my parents not wanting me to go unless i have a chaperone didn't make me give up on what i truly wanted to happen. i was luckily at the first row, left side. unfortunately, he didn't notice me. of course it made me sad, adding the fact that i didn't have m&g tickets because it was too expensive for me to purchase.

i watched it, so intrigued. i thought it was some dumb fantasy shit bc i doubted this thing ain't real and they're just being delusional. however, that still didn't stop me from trying it. i found myself doing the same methods as naomi rosenthal told her viewers. i could write everything i want to manifest most preferably on a notebook so i can have it all compiled and organized.
i started from manifesting another uprising artist. it wasn't my sp, but he was living in the same area as my sp. the differences were that, we were both asian and he was born in the philippines as well. he had 65k followers that time and i became a total fan so why not?
I've done different kinds of methods: the 369 method, scripting, 5x55, 1 sentence method, 2 cups method, etc.
the whole time, i was focused on that guy instead of the sp im supposed to be manifesting on. i was becoming obsessed. i had a fan account on twitter for him and my friend who was very supportive for me to reach my goals suggested to do the "day one of tweeting about @__ until he notices me."

little did i know, it led me to a lot of unexpected events. i found a tweet that were looking for more fans of him to be able to join the group chat, so i signed up and they added me there. the server was so damn inactive but when i joined, they were all talking and stuff. i looked at the members and saw his @ in the group chat. i was shocked, he's mutuals with someone in the gc. few days later, one member was asking if we should move to ig and we all agreed so we moved there. and that same member who was moots w him on twitter was also moots w him on instagram so she had the priviledge to add him in any group chat. and so she did.
that night, we were all talking and stuff until a familiar guy straight off joined our conversation. we were all surprised it was him and he asked to join the video call. i remember i manifested that i would vc with him while he was eating his favorite cereal and BRO THE FUCK IT HAPPENWD OUT OF THE BLUE. DURING THE CALL. HE WAS EATIGN FUCKING LUCKY CHARMS. i was shocked. starting from that day, i now believed that the manifesting shit is fucking real. i said what i said.
eversince that happened, our friendship in the groupchat with the artist i was experimenting grew and it built a very wholesome bond. we became comfortable with each other and he was very comfortable with me to the point where he now often likes and views my stories, liking my posts, and replying to my stories. it's weird bc he instantly replies to my stories when it's related to my sp.
before all of that i also manifested that he would follow me on instagram and be friends with me on every socmed i'm mostly active on. eventually, it took a rough year for him to follow all of us but when it was my turn, he followed 3 of my instagram accounts (personal, main, and priv) and 2 of my Facebook accounts (main and school account).
it's still processing in my head how that happened.

then i messaged my sp on ig (YES I AM AWARE THAT HE DOESNT REPLY) asking when is he coming to the philippines and if he did, i pleaded if he could make the tickets a bit cheap because i don't have enough money to afford. well, of course he didn't reply.
the next month has finally arrived, seeing my sp's post on facebook with a poster attached to it saying he has a free show in manila. "manila i'm comin'!" his caption added.
i left my jaw wide open and of course i freaked out. the week before the concert, surprisingly the famous multinational music company (philippine branch) that my sp is under of messaged our page asking if we could join a zoom meeting. OUT OF THE BLUE. we were all speechless and told my friend who founded the team that she should be the one who has to take in charge of all the talking and stuff bc i reckon i wouldn't handle it well.
fast forward, everything happened so fast and honestly, i considered it as the highlight of my whole year.
we were in the zoom call, the manager and her assistant talked to us about everything we needed to know from my sp arriving until his departure. literally everything. they also told us that they have a surprise and wouldn't tell us.
when my sp arrived from the airport, we were so confident meeting him the fact that we're the only ones who knows all the deets. we saw him, but we were immediately blocked my dozens of people, 7 of them. i saw him. it felt like a dream. he was so tall and he was focused on the ones infront of him where he was hugging and taking pics with them. i called him but gave up because he didn't notice. it was just a short bit until he walked to the van and came inside. i got my sp to sign my small photocard while he's in the van already yet i knew to myself that it wasn't so damn worth it. i was doubting the whole time if is it really possible to be friends with him?
we finally saw the manager and her assistant walking as well to their car to follow our sp, we told them we didn't get a chance to interact with him, even pictures, none! the marketing assistant apologized to us while the manager told us that we need to come the next day at 5 pm in a stern voice. we ended up eating sadly at the mall, the whole time we were staring at the table, not enjoying everything that has happened that day
the next afternoon has arrived. i even ditched my parents just to get to the location they gave us. it was a 5 star hotel. i was contemplating for a bit while i was in the uber, thinking why are we going to a 5 star hotel when we could've just went to their office? it took 1 and a half hour to arrive due to traffic.
afterwards, i arrived late but the manager told us we can go up the 5th floor if were complete. now that we were, she escorted us to a function room as she delighted to tell us that we will be having a listening party of his album that is ab to be released in march. and the one who's going to manage the party is my sp's fucking manager. like what the fuck. my sp's manager finally came in with a macbook air and had a chat with us while playing the songs and shit and we even cried tears of joy.
throughout halfway the listening session, my sp's videographer came in with a fucking literal video camera and began recording us and both of these people were coming in and out of the room. i was getting confused.
it now ended and we thanked my sp's manager because we were the only ones that has heard the full damn album. like FOR REAL. our team were busy talking while i was staring blankly at the huge door infront of our table, being delusional as i make fake scenarios in my head when all of a sudden, my friend beside be shrieked while looking at the door opening, seeing the guy I've been waiting to meet my whole life. my body started to feel so numb and i had my mouth covered, directly looking at him from head to toe. my anxiety started to flow over my mind thinking if this was real? did i reality shift? was i hallucinating? or was it just a dream? or i manifested all of this and it IS real.
he came in, looking at everyone, looking at ME. i was about to cry but i restrained myself from doing it bc it would be embarrassing if i did. it was a wonderful night. we had dinner with him, at A HOTEL he was staying on. and he serenaded us during dinner, despite all of us didnt budge to eat.
the rest of the night was history to remember. the other stuff i manifested was me attending his free show the next day in an open shopping mall. everything was free, and me and our team facilitated the line coordination for the fans. we were all at a reserved seat in front, FIRST ROW. and the guards think we're vip. there was a time, a few minutes before the concert started, the entrance was blocked by heaps of fans, but the guards made way for us to get right through as we walk ahead to our seats, with thousands of eyes laying on us. we also had free m&g tickets too thanks to the company trusting on us. i have never felt so important, in my whole fucking life.
the next day, his departure. the manager told us the deets for his depature so we waited in the airport and he came to us once he got out of the van. we didnt approach him, hE DID. no other fan was there, only us. we had a chat and he said hes coming back again with a proper band bc he came there with only a guitar and himself. we took a pic on my friends polaroid, got him to sign my ukulele, had a conversation WITH ME and after that he left. it was the best thing ever. now i knew this was worth it. i had an gut instinct saying that this is just the beginning and those were just baby steps to me.

Officials of the Census Bureau participated and/or participate in these BOLO meetings, including Defendant Jennifer Shopkorn and Christopher Lewitzke, who is a Senior Digital Marketing Associate with Reingold, a communications firm that was, on information and belief, acting on behalf of the Census Bureau. Crawford’s emails indicate that the Census Bureau and its officials and agents, such as Lewitzke and Shopkorn, play an important, active, and ongoing role in colluding with social-media platforms to censor disfavored speech. On March 18, 2021, Crawford emailed Twitter officials and stated that “[w]e are working on a project with Census to leverage their infrastructure to identify and monitor social media for vaccine misinformation,” and stated that “[w]e would like the opportunity to work with your trust team on a regular basis to discuss what we are seeing.” She also noted that “I understand that you did this with Census last year as well.” Twitter responded by stating, “With our CEO testifying before Congress this week is tricky,” but otherwise agreed to the collusive arrangement. Likewise, in subsequent emails to Twitter (on May 6) and Facebook (on May 10), Crawford noted to the social-media platform officials that “[o]ur census team,” i.e., Lewitzke and Shopkorn, who were cc’ed on the emails, “has much more info on it if needed” regarding “some example posts” of “misinfo” that she flagged for censorship.
   
2. Moreover, many of these substantive communications from federal officials flagging specific posts and content for censorship also appear to occur through alternative channels of communication. For example, Facebook trained CDC and Census Bureau officials on how to use a “Facebook misinfo reporting channel.” Twitter offered federal officials a privileged channel for flagging misinformation through a “Partner Support Portal.” YouTube has disclosed that it granted “trusted flagger” status to Census Bureau officials, which allows privileged and expedited consideration of their claims that content should be censored.
   
3. In response to a third-party subpoena, YouTube has identified Schwartz, Faught, Molina-Irizarry, Galemore, Wakana, Flaherty, and Waldo, among others, as federal officials likely to have “communicated with the YouTube custodians about misinformation about COVID, the census, or elections.”
   
4. Pursuant to third-party subpoena, YouTube has identified Census officials Schwartz, Molina-Irizarry, Galemore—as well as Deloitte employees/Census contractors Michael Jaret Saewitz and Caroline Faught—as involved in communications with YouTube about misinformation and content modulation of speech on YouTube.
   
5. Census Bureau officials have openly stated that they are working with social-media companies to suppress so-called misinformation and disinformation. For example, in 2020, Census boasted that Census “has established the government’s first ever Trust & Safety Team” in order to “prevent the spread of fake, false and inaccurate information that can negatively influence 2020 Census participation and response.” Census Partners with Social-Media Platforms, Community Organizations, the Public to Stop Spread of False Information, at https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2020/02/putting-2020-census-rumors-to-rest.html (Feb. 10, 2020). “Trust & Safety Team” is what social-media platforms like Twitter call their censorship teams.

1. Evidently, “preventing the spread of fake, false and inaccurate information” includes federally-induced censorship of free speech on social media. Census states that it is “[w]orking with social media platforms such as Facebook, Microsoft, Nextdoor, Google, and Pinterest to update their policies and terms of service to include census-specific activities,” and “[c]oordinating with YouTube and Twitter to create processes enabling us to quickly identify and respond to misinformation and disinformation.” Id. On information and belief, these activities include government-induced censorship of social-media speech. Census states: “These partnerships will help the Census Bureau counter false information that can lead to an undercount by quickly identifying phony information and respond with factual content.”
   
2. In addition, Census invites private citizens to report suspected false information to the Census Bureau so that Census can arrange for it to be censored. Census directs the public to: “Report inaccurate, suspicious or fraudulent information to the Census Bureau. If you see or hear something, tell us: Report suspicious information and tips to [email protected]. Reach out to us on our verified social media accounts (@USCensusBureau) to ask questions and flag suspicious information. Call the Census Bureau Customer Service Hotline at 1-800-923-8282 to report suspicious activity.” Id.
   
3. As noted above, it is evident that Census responds to such reports by seeking to censor speech and content that it disfavors. Among other things, YouTube has disclosed that Census officials have been granted “trusted flagger” status to flag content for censorship on social media and receive privileged, expedited treatment for such reports.
   
4. Defendant Schwartz was the “operations manager for the Trust & Safety Team and deputy division chief for the Center for New Media and Promotion at the Census Bureau,” who authored this report instructing the public to flag disinformation directly to Census.
   
5. “Trust & Safety Team” is a euphemism for the authorities within social-media platforms who are in charge of censoring and suppressing disfavored speech, speakers, and 132 content. Census’s creation of a like-named “Trust & Safety Team” was the creation of a federal censorship agency within Census.
   
6. On its website, Census boasts that “the U.S. Census Bureau's Trust & Safety Team protected the 2020 Census from misinformation and disinformation.” Census Bureau, Trust & Safety Team, at https://www.census.gov/about/trust-and-safety.html. This page notes that the “Trust & Safety Team’s” censorship work continues today across expanded fronts: “We continue to watch for misinformation being shared online, and we work to share facts instead to help support communications around the Census Bureau’s commitment to data quality and transparency around these efforts. The team’s role has expanded to also support the American Community Survey (ACS), the Economic Census, and other Census Bureau programs and data products.” Id. The same page continues to instruct the public to report so-called “misinformation” to Census for censorship: “Help the Census Bureau’s Trust & Safety team by reporting inaccurate, suspicious, or fraudulent information you read, hear, or spot online, including: A rumor in a message board or group claiming the information you provided to the Census Bureau will be publicly disclosed.... An advertisement on social media sharing fake 2020 Census websites and inaccurate information. No matter what you find, let the Census Bureau know by contacting [email protected].” Id.
   
7. The Trust & Safety Team openly states that it coordinates with social-media platforms to censor speech: “Trust & Safety Team coordinates and integrates our efforts with external technology and social media platforms, partner and stakeholder organizations, and cybersecurity officials.... Leveraging best practices from the public and private sectors, the Trust & Safety Team monitors all available channels and open platforms for misinformation and disinformation about the census. Monitoring allows us to respond quickly to combat potential threats to achieving an accurate count in traditional media, social media and other stakeholder communications. As we discover misinformation and disinformation, the team will coordinate the responses with partners and stakeholders.” https://www.census.gov/newsroom/blogs/random-samplings/2019/12/why_the_census_burea.html. “Coordinating the responses with partners and stakeholders,” evidently, means working with social-media platforms to censor speech.
   
8. In other Census publications, Schwartz and other Census officials claim that they are “harnessing the capabilities of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram ... enables the Census Bureau to identify and respond to misinformation swiftly before it spreads.” https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2019/07/hey-siri-why-is-2020-census- important.html. “The U.S. Census Bureau is partnering with tech giants to ... respond to disinformation before it spreads.” https://www.census.gov/library/spotlights/2020/tech.html.
   
9. Census also states that it has “partner[ed] with search engines” such as Google to de-boost disfavored content and promote Census-favored content above government-disfavored private content. https://www.census.gov/library/spotlights/2020/nextdoor.html.
   
10. Public reports indicate that Census teamed up with “Data & Society’s Disinformation Action Lab” at the “Center for an Informed Public” at the University of Washington in a “behind-the-scenes networked response to mis- and disinformation about the 2020 U.S. Census, an effort that provides a model for future multi-stakeholder collaborations to mitigate the impacts of communication harms.” https://www.cip.uw.edu/2022/05/31/disinformation-action-lab-data-society-census-misinformation/.
    
11. Center for an Informed Public’s director is Kate Starbird, who also serves on CISA’s advisory committee that advises CISA’s social-media censorship activities. According to CIP, “Beyond the Census Counts Campaign, DAL supported other national civil rights groups, local civil society groups, state and city government officials, and worked with social media companies, journalists, and the Census Bureau itself — all to protect a complete and fair count from mis- and disinformation.” Id. (emphasis added).
    
12. The Census Defendants’ conduct is unlawful under the APA and should be set aside.

Our Yeo One! I don't think he has ever said negative things while he's been in Pentagon. Whenever we're having a hard time or when we don't have certainty, he's the one who always makes us look at it in a good light positively. I think he's a really precious member.
And also our maknaes! Yuto seems to always work hard in his place, holding out well. He's always diligently doing the important parts and working hard at it. And thanks to Kino I think there's a lot of parts being filled by him, I'm thankful for that. And for our Wooseok, as the maknae he always shows a good and fun side to the hyungs. During important times, just through Wooseok's one word we could stay strong even when we're having a hard time. That's why I'm thankful to have Wooseok, who's like a big hyung though he's the maknae.
From now on our stories will unfold, and there will also be another ups and downs in front of our eyes.

You Are is a self-composed song they performed at Pentagon's debut showcase where the members were bawling their eyes out while performing. After Hui's message was done the members screamed in English 'Hui I love you!' and 'Hui I miss you!'.
I wanted to share this because it's frustrating that people who have never looked into Hui or Pentagon are questioning Hui's love and dedication to the group, claiming that he's ditching a sinking ship for his own solo career with baseless assumptions. The members have never stopped talking about Hui as their leader while the show's happening and some of their relatives, the group's makeup artists and former Cube staff have been cheering on him.
We don't know what went on behind the scenes that led to this situation besides Cube being Cube, but what's for sure is that the members cherish each other deeply and they'll do everything in their power for Pentagon to not go down. Their journey has never been an easy one.

"Fragile Ego, Fragile Body, Weak Mind, Weak Spirit"
In Part One, Part Two, and Part Three, we've built a timeline and tracked the story of an old man who came back to professional wrestling. Disgruntled and broken, he had abandoned the business to which he’d given himself for fifteen years. They were a tumultuous fifteen years, but within that time he reached the height of the industry. He held the attention of every single person who was a wrestling fan and even many of whom weren’t fans at all. To get to such heights, he plumbed the depths of cruelty and villainy in character, going places many of his peers wouldn’t dare touch. He attacked the sobriety of recovering alcoholics and substance abusers. He preyed upon the anxiety and insecurity of those with mental health issues. He lied, he gas-lit, and he betrayed on the way to the top. Even for someone as vile as himself, however, it simultaneously became all too much and not enough. At the mountaintop, sick of himself and everything around him, he walked away.

“I was never gonna get healthy physically, mentally, spiritually or emotionally, staying in the same place that got me sick in the first place.”

Who could fault him? But then he came back seven years later to, as some have called it, “Wrestling Paradise”. In that Paradise, as he turned uphill, he crossed the path of a Snake slithering deceitfully among the weeds. The Snake bit him and at first, it seemed only a surface wound that would easily heal in time. That Snake’s venom, however, was slow-acting and allowed the bite to be all but forgotten as the Snake slithered out of sight and out of mind. Then one day, he’s finally back upon that mountain top, having gone a different route than before – a longer and more winding route, but seemingly nobler and more sustainable. Many of our faithful heroes weren’t buying it. They knew him before and have studied his ways, knowing he could quickly revert back to the evil and destruction he was for so long. He brushes away their suspicion to assure both us and himself: he’s a new man. He feels at peace with himself and he is bathing in the adulation of his friends, his fans, and his peers… until suddenly on that mountain top, the Snake leaps out and reminds him of the venom coursing through his veins.

What does this mean for AEW?

Shortly before midnight, a live stream goes up on YouTube for the post-event media scrum.
The stream has a longer delay than usual before the presser begins. Bloodied, battered, sweat-soaked hair in his eyes, draped in a towel… CM Punk looks like pure hell as he sits down to take – and to ask – questions from a group of wrestling reporters.
The mic goes to Nick Hausman first:

“Hi! Nick Hausman here from Wrestling Inc–”

Punk cuts him off:

“--I’ll start, Nick. Show of hands. Who here fancies themselves a journalist? You a journalist Nick?”

Nick:

“... I try my best.”

Punk:

“You still do improv?”

Nick:

“Not for a little bit..”

Punk:

“When you did improv, who’d you do improv with?”

Nick curiously uses a shoot name:

“I did it with Scott Colton.”

Punk:

“Okay, so you fancy yourself a journalist. Would you say you’re friends with Scott Colton?”

Nick:

“Uh… no. I haven’t talked to Scott in some time.”

Punk:

“So you’re not friends with him?”

Nick:

“No… Scott and I do not see eye to eye.”

Punk, to the whole room:

“Oh wow… Well that makes two of us. My point is, if you fancy yourself a journalist, even if it’s for the silly world of professional wrestling, and you have journalistic integrity… people who report things, mostly that are bullshit and slanderous lies against myself… you should probably disclose who you’re friends with.”

Punk, directly to Hausman, somewhat quietly:

“You blew my spot… If you’re not friends with him, I apologize.”

Nick:

“I’m not friends with him…”

Punk, ignoring him, continues on:

“I haven’t had anything to do with Scott Colton for almost a decade. Probably wanted nothing to do with him even longer than that. It’s fucking unfortunate that I have to come up here and speak on this when I’m on my time and this is a fucking business. Why I’m a grown-ass adult man and I decide not to be friends with somebody is nobody else’s fucking business. But my friends, if I fall backwards, will catch me. Scott Colton, I felt, never would have.
My problem was I wanted to bring a guy with me to the top that did not want to see me at the top, okay? You can call it jealousy, you can call it envy, whatever the fuck it is. My relationship with Scott Colton ended long before I paid all of his bills. I have every receipt. I have every invoice. I have every email. I have an email where he says ‘I agree to go our separate ways, I will get my own lawyer and you do not have to pay anymore.’
That’s an email that I have and the only reason the public did not see it is because when I finally had to counter-sue him, through discovery we discovered he shared a bank account with his mother. That’s a fact. As soon as we discovered that fact and we subpoenaed old Marsha, he sent the email ‘Oh, can we please drop all this?’ Now, it’s 2022. I haven’t been friends with this guy since at least 2014, late-2013.

CM Punk and Colt Cabana weren’t even faced with the famously divisive legal bills until 2015 when WWE’s doctor filed a defamation lawsuit against them. Colt didn’t file suit against Punk over legal fees until 2018. The timeline here is very fuzzy and totally unreliable. The line about Colt's mother sticks out like a sore thumb, but if you've read previous installments, wrestlers' relationships with their mothers have been referenced before and most notably in recent promos.
Punk continues:

The fact that I have to sit up here because we have irresponsible people who call themselves EVPs and couldn’t fucking manage a Target and they spread lies and bullshit and put into the media that I got somebody fired when I have fuck all to do with him, want nothing to do with him, do not care where he works, where he doesn’t work, where he eats, where he sleeps… the fact that I have to get up and do this in 2022 is fucking embarrassing. If y’all are at fault, fuck you. If not, I apologize. What did I ever do in this world to deserve an empty-headed fucking dumbfuck like ‘Hangman’ Adam Page to go out on national television and fucking go into business for himself? For what? What did I ever do? Dave [Meltzer]?… I didn’t do a goddamn thing.

At this point, Punk calls on a guy in the front row and asks his name. The guy is wearing a Pittsburgh Penguins shirt.
Punk:

“Fuck the Pittsburgh Penguins.”

Tony Khan interjects, referring to an article where he had briefly discussed the rumors about Colt Cabana’s “sidelining” in weeks prior:

“I made it very clear in Forbes and I just wanna make it clear again–”

Punk cuts off Tony Khan, the company owner, his boss:

“It’s not his position to make it very fucking clear! There’s people who call themselves EVPs that should have fuckking known better. This shit was none of their business. I understand sticking up for your fucking friends, I fucking get it. I stuck up for that guy more than anybody. Okay? I paid his bills until I didn’t and it was my decision not to.”

TK:

“Yeah but I shouldn’t have no-commented when Nick first said it, it’s my fault, I should’ve taken it head-on”

Punk:

“I appreciate that, but I’m trying to run a fucking business. And when somebody who hasn’t done a damn thing in this business [Hangman Page] jeopardizes the first million dollar house that this company has ever drawn off of my back and goes on national television and does that, it’s a disgrace to this industry, it’s a disgrace to this company. Now we’re far beyond apologies. I gave him a fucking chance, it did not get handled, and you saw what I had to do, which is very regrettable, lowering myself to his fucking level. But that’s where we’re at right now. And I will still walk up and down this hallway and say ‘If you have a fucking problem with me, take it up with me. Let’s fucking go’.”

Nick Hausman finally gets to ask his question to Punk, and it’s regarding the return of MJF.
Tony Khan is the one who answers:

“If I may… I am the one who asked him back because MJF’s a big star in this company and this is one of the biggest events. A year ago, CM Punk debuted here and I thought it was right for the fans. I felt that, for the fans, one of the best things we could do is bring MJF back.”

After rolling his eyes and stuffing a muffin in his mouth, Punk jumps in:

“It’s because he wants me to work with pricks. Constantly.”

TK brushes it off:

“...Nevertherless… Two of the top wrestlers in the world. It’s a big match down the line.”

At this point, Tony Khan looks like he’s about to vomit.
Punk:

“Oh, sorry, I keep fucking bringing this up… When it came down he was going to sue, I asked to talk to him. He denied… When I offered him money, it wasn’t enough [Punk is banging on the table for emphasis]. He went ahead with the lawsuit and sued. It’s his fucking funeral. He shares a bank account with his mother, that tells you all you need to know about what his character is.”

Nick Hausman:

“Well… You were always very nice to me.”

Punk:

“I appreciate that. I’m sorry I’m a little bit snippy. I’m hurt, I’m old, I’m fucking tired and I work with fucking children.”

TK:

“I regret not answering your question the first time you asked it…”

Punk:

“We’re all learning here, Tony. It’s okay.”

Punk goes on to plug Mindy’s Bakery in Chicago, the supplier of his muffins.
The scrum moves onto its next question, this time for Tony.

“You saw the reaction to MJF when he came out at the end of the night. He was cheered over Punk… the hometown guy… Do you have any worries about MJF… becoming this sort of anti-authority figure?”

Tony Khan gives some boilerplate word salad about how it’s great to have two compelling and charismatic figures, while Punk makes snarky faces and continues chomping on his muffins.
Punk doesn’t want to talk about MJF. He goes back into his rant:

“I’ll tell you why I’m upset about it. If you’re an EVP, you don’t try to middle your top babyface, try to get your niche audience on the internet to hate him for some made-up, bullshit rumor. Really pisses me off. Stepping on your own dick… Trying to make money, sell tickets, fill arenas, and these stupid guys think they’re in Reseda.”

Next question regards how “modern talent can take advice from some of the older guys” to “help grow as a company”. Tony lets Punk give the answer.

“We have a locker room full of pretty brilliant minds… When I came back, when I cut my promo my second week here, I thought it was pretty decent. I kinda blur the lines a little bit, ya know, ‘What’s he doing? Crazy Phil, going into business for himself’, when really I was just defending myself. Mix that in with attacking Moxley, calling Kingston the second best Kingston – which is a pretty great line – but our locker room for all the brilliance and wisdom it has, isn’t worth shit when you have an empty-headed dumbfuck, who hasn’t done anything in this business, do public interviews and say ‘I don’t really take advice.’ Who the fuck do you think you are? I’m on a team with Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and Sammy Sosa, and I don’t need to work on my swing? … Fucking go fuck yourself… Grow up.

Bonds, McGuire, and Sosa are most famous for hitting insane amounts of home runs in the late 1990s and early 2000s, breaking numerous historic records, rejuvenating interest in MLB, and most notably, using banned PEDs which would ultimately ostracize them from the baseball community and block them from enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
A question comes up for Punk from an old friend in the press pool: What’s his message for MJF?
The notion of having to speak directly to MJF seems to sap all of the energy from Punk. All of the piss and vinegar leaves him. He’s quiet now and reserved now… almost sheepish. It’s like he’s speaking to the mirror once again.
Punk:

“Do I have to answer this… I guess… I don’t know. I’m tired of wrestling these pricks. I’m tired of wrestling with these kids who think they know everything… But I’m not the boss… He won number one contender. I guess I’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Max is supremely talented, but this goes for him and every other individual in the locker room that doesn’t wanna be here. The grass is not greener on the other side. The grass is greener where you water it. Max likes to shit where he eats instead of watering the grass. So we’ll have to see how that goes.”

Next question:

“A year ago we were in this room. It was after Adam Cole, after Brian Danielson… You said it had the feeling of ‘Bash at the Beach’ [1996]...

Punk, sarcastically:

“Oh boy… Did I say that?...”

Reporter continues:

“A year later… What's your honest assessment of the last year, personally and professionally?”

Punk:

“Look, I know it sounds like a pretty ridiculous statement, but in five years, I think you’ll see the impact of it. There’s a chance I’m wrong. We’ve got an uphill battle in a lot of respects… There’s just so much drama and turmoil going on. I like to believe in the place I work. We do have a very, very strong roster and we have a lot of brilliant minds backstage. If young talent is willing to actually listen and receive advice… There’s always gonna be people who think they should be the top guy and wanna be pushed. I get that. That was me… I always wanted more.”

Meltzer asks about Punk’s foot injury from a few months before. You’ll remember, he wanted to soak in the adulation of the crowd the next show after Double or Nothing where he won the belt, and he got hurt doing a reckless stage dive.

“...This is the worst injury I’ve ever had… This was really hard for me. I really wanted to have this great Summer and do good for Tony. I wanted to sell tickets and draw money, help with ratings. And it all came crashing down… I missed Forbidden Door in the United Center… I have pride in my work and I really wanted to carry the title through the summer and just help grow the business, so it was mentally devastating.”

The final question concerns the significance of the victory over Jon Moxley. Both the reporter and Tony Khan make note of the fact that it is Moxley’s first clean pin defeat in three years.
Punk:

“Oh man. Well I guess people are REALLY mad at me then, huh?... We came from the same place. Felt a lot of the same things… Guys could’ve helped us out a little bit more, passed the torch… I’m here to elevate everybody. And I’m not saying I elevated Moxley, but maybe I did. Because I think that’s what all of our jobs are: to reach back and get everybody to that level. We have different philosophies about pro wrestling, but it’s all pro wrestling. When done right, it’s magic.”

The scrum session for Punk officially comes to an end, but Punk pauses things and calls out Bryan Alvarez:

“Alvarez… I saw that video man. You were so incredulous that I went into business for myself.”

Alvarez explains how he said he only pointed out some were pro-Punk and some were anti-Punk about the whole thing [his worked shoot challenge to Hangman].
Punk dives deeper:

“...I’ve eaten shit on this subject for a very, very long time. I am very sad today that I had to get up here and say his name. He doesn’t fucking deserve it. But facts are facts. Name two people that have made the most money off CM Punk. [He looks at Tony Khan] I don’t think you’re there yet. The first one is Vince McMahan. The second one is Scott Colton. I hope you all have a good night. Please be more responsible with the news you get from certain people and just remember, we’re human beings.”

Punk packs up his muffins and his drinks, gives his dog Larry a shout out, and runs down the Pittsburgh Penguins. He gives Tony Khan one of his sodas.

“Contrary to popular belief, I am a very nice guy.”

Punk walks off the podium after nearly 25 minutes.
The rest of the scrum is often overlooked, but on closer examination, it’s no less interesting, and seems to be developing a common theme.
Next up come the reigning tag team champions, Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee. Midway through their match against The Acclaimed, the audience in Chicago was nuclear hot for the challengers. Sensing this, Swerve In Our Glory began working heel en route to a successful defense of their titles.
One of the first questions concerns “problems” between the pair that have flared up in recent weeks, with the two not always on the same page and Swerve eliminating Lee in a battle royal.
Swerve:

We didn’t really have problems. We had a dip in the road and we fixed that. You know what fixes everything? Winning. I can get violent and ravenous in that ring when I have to… If I have to push the envelope and bring Keith Lee to that level to defend these titles… So many people were against us having them in the first place… I’m always like that. Super King Petty. I read all of y’all. I read everybody in here. I literally listen to all your podcasts. First thing y’all said when we won the titles… No congratulations, nothing about Keith Lee almost losing his life fighting COVID, nothing about where I come from and both of us being let go… When we finally climbed the mountaintop, there was so much ridicule and bullshit against us about how we don’t deserve this. [You said] these opportunities should have gone… everywhere else… I’m not gonna apologize. I’m gonna gloat.”

The next reporter asks Tony Khan if he gave consideration to calling an audible on the match due to how over The Acclaimed were, changing the finish on the fly. He’s skittish to answer, so the question is rerouted to the talent.
Swerve, on how people felt The Acclaimed should’ve won:

“I couldn’t care less.”

Tony starts putting over how great of a match they just had, then puts over how great The Acclaimed are. He begins hinting that it makes sense to possibly have a rematch at Grand Slam in just over two weeks.
Swerve is beside himself:

“Wow. Why? Why??... How much more we gotta keep proving??”

Keith Lee starts trying to rationalize how it makes sense but Swerve is pissed.
Tony Khan:

“People are asking... Look, I think it would be one of the best thing we could do at Grand Slam–”

Swerve cuts off Tony, even putting a hand on his shoulder to stop him, and Tony gives him a hell of a look.

“Tony… Tony… This is just another tag team they all want the belts on instead of us!”

Keith Lee:

“I find it interesting in our losses, we had to go down the ladder, but you wanna do this rematch… But I’m not gonna speak to that.”

TK:

“I’ll take some time to think about it, but I just think it’d be a great match for the fans.”

Swerve:

“...It is what it is, but miss me with it altogether… listen man. That’s what you wanna do… I mean, you pay the bills man so you do what you gotta do… But don’t be surprised if somebody gets hurt. Are we done? Are we done?”

Keith Lee, nervously laughing:

“I’m not a part of that statement.”

This portion of the scrum ends abruptly.
Next up is Toni Storm, who has secured the AEW Interim Women’s world championship. Brief chatter about how the women in the locker room all feel devoted to helping each other and elevating each other as a whole, before a reporter asks:
“We’re in a situation now where we just saw Jon Moxley come off a run where he was an interim world champion, and he made his thoughts very clear about how he felt about the word ‘Interim’. How do you feel about that?”
Toni Storm:

“Yeah. It’s not ideal. Thunder Rosa says she’s injured… Okay. So when she says she’s not injured, she can come back and lose to me, and that’ll be the end of that.”

Tony Khan, laughing nervously:

“Well, that’s a… That’s a statement…”

A few questions allow the new champ to put over the depth of the locker room and how AEW has been very good to her after her career was in limbo. Then it circles back around to Thunder Rosa:

“We had formed kind of a friendship… But I want her to know that I’m not just going to sit in her corner and cheer for her and be her little friend… I didn’t come here to make friends. I’ll be cool. I’ll be civil. But when she comes back, I’m gonna whip her ass.”

Toni Storm’s portion wraps up.
At this point, the new trios champions – Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, and Matt Jackson – should be arriving at the podium. Someone to the side alerts Tony Khan that it will be Chris Jericho coming up next instead. Tony looks surprised. He starts reading and responding to messages on his phone. A reporter randomly asks Tony about the contract tampering allegations, but he declines to comment on it. He stalls for about five minutes before Jericho gets to the podium.
After commenting on what a pleasure it was to finally wrestle against Brian Danielson and call a match on the fly (“there’s very few people in the world you can do that with”), Jericho takes a question from Nick Hausman:

“I asked Tony about this earlier this week… There was a mandatory backstage talent meeting that Tony confirmed happened. Reportedly you spoke at that meeting, Chris. Wondering if you could tell us what you said to the roster and what kind of advice you’re giving to talent… and to management… right now at this point in AEW?”

Jericho:

“The specifics don’t need to be discussed… and that was one of the things that was addressed: don’t leak shit that’s supposed to be private among us. My message is always to remind people how special AEW is and don’t take that for granted… I always want to remind guys, please don’t ruin or potentially ruin this amazing world that we’ve created.”

TK:

“We don’t want guys going into business for themselves… or girls…”

Jericho:

“We don’t. Where I came from, working for twenty years, with Vince… That would never happen [Note: it happened all the time…] and I’m trying to let people know we’re getting to the point where these things are unacceptable. We will start doing things that Tony would do in the NFL or at Fulham. We are a pro sports, multi-million dollar company with a huge contract, with another huge television contract coming up soon. A lot of guys don’t have that experience and don’t realize how special this is. So that’s what I try to do whenever I have them, and Tony has them… Now it’s just a little more frequent, just to remind everyone: stay on course… both guys and girls.”

Meltzer asks Jericho about having to constantly reinvent himself. Jericho says he’s not big on nostalgia, but tapping into the past and bringing up history always helps tell a compelling story:

“... We’re building a whole story around it. It fits in with the whole Heel-Jericho delusion: ‘I’ve found the fountain of youth! I’m better than ever! I’m the best wrestler in the world!’ I can say that stuff as a heel. It’s so funny: when I lose a match, it’s a great match. When I win? ‘Oh, 51-year-old Jericho is burying the young guys!’ So I can kinda use that. That intrigues me… That little kernel of truth, that I always like as a heel, that I can over blow to the point where people are like, ‘Shut the fuck up already, man!’... So let’s use that to our advantage, hide behind it…”

Tony Khan then recounts a story about how he had first seen Chris Jericho in person at an ECW show in 1996 in Chicago, the same show from which a photo was shown on Dynamite the week earlier when Jericho was the young Lionheart. He recounts how when Jericho left ECW, they chanted “You Sold Out!” He also mentions a sign he had at the ECW event that night: “Shane [Douglas] ♥️’s Shawn [Michaels]”, alluding to the famous grudge between those two men.
The story between Douglas and Michaels is notorious and quite relevant here.
“The Franchise” had originally been in WWE in 1990, where he made a name for himself filling in for the injured Michaels as Marty Janetty’s tag partner in The Rockers. Caring for his ailing father, Douglas stepped away from wrestling full-time but intermittently appeared for WCW, then ECW, where he finally became a top guy. When he returned to WWE in 1995, HBK and the rest of the Kliq had assumed nearly full control of backstage politics and were tyrannical in the locker room. Michaels invited Shane Douglas into the fold. Considering them childish, he declined. The rest of his tenure in WWE would be smothered after rejecting Michaels and The Kliq. HBK vowed never to do the job against him, and even faked an injury to avoid dropping the Intercontinental title to him. Douglas left the company the following year after Vince was infuriated that Douglas would not wrestle at Madison Square Garden, despite a doctor explicitly telling him that if he worked through his back injury it would risk paralysis.
The scrum moves on, and eventually Denise Salcedo asks Jericho about MJF’s return.
Jericho:

“I said to him, ‘When you come back, you’re going to be a babyface…’ and he said, ‘I don’t wanna be a babyface, I don’t know what I’m gonna do.' ...It’s easier to make people hate you than it is to make them like you. But once they start really hating you, that’s when they start really liking you. He’s almost at that point. That’s my prediction: he’s gonna be one of our top babyfaces, whether or not he wants to be, very, very soon… A game changer.”

At this point, the Jericho portion wraps up, and as he stands to leave he says something to Tony Khan, in a whisper, but very much able to be picked up on a live mic. What he said was either, “We gotta talk after” or “We called the cops”, but follow-ups to the local police department revealed no call was made so it is very likely the former. What’s indisputable is that he said “Some shit happened” directly in front of the cameras and the microphones. TK says to Jericho, “I’ll meet you in my office afterwards.” There is zero sense of urgency around anything as Jericho leaves thanking the press pool and Tony sits down to field his final questions.
A few “no comments” are issued to questions regarding WWE's alleged contract tampering as well as a proposed super-show with WWE. Tony Khan says he has good feelings toward WWE but they’re not exactly reciprocated, and from there he doesn’t comment any further.
A reporter asks:

“Leading up to All Out, there were unfortunately some reports that the AEW locker room and talent were facing some adversity… In comparison to a sports team, a big win usually pushes them over that threshold of challenges they were facing. With the overall success of tonight, do you think that will help the locker room overcome those roadblocks?”

Instead of taking this softball as it was pitched, TK leans into the premise:

“I think there’s still a lot of wrestlers in professional wrestling who don’t get along… now more than ever, those things are apparent. But I also think that the industry has thrived on creative tension for a long time. Yeah, you might say, what if it doesn’t manifest in a match right away? In the late 90s and early 2000s, which was the business, the interest, and the general peak of pro wrestling in many ways… There was certainly a big group of pro wrestlers who didn’t like each other. A lot of times they weren’t even in the same companies and they would rip each other, and it wasn’t gonna produce a match… But that is what we produce, is wrestling matches…
There’s a lot of matches between people who don’t get along and it’s not always an easy road to get people in the ring. But when you can get people in the ring to settle their differences, it’s really exciting. And there’s a lot of people… some people even here have gone out and blatantly slammed me in public. I have a pretty calm demeanor… I’m willing to put up with a lot of abuse… but there’s only so much knocking me and slamming me I can put up with. On the other hand, I will do what’s right for business when I have to…”

Brandon Thurston asks him about the business aspect of the weekend, and Tony admits it was challenging with a lot of direct competition, some of it seemingly targeted directly to hit the AEW bottom line. Then, Tony’s general tone shifts he legit cuts a promo:

“I have to face the competition out there. When I compare myself to Jim Crockett promotions… This weekend, I think, I got a taste of the same medicine Jim Crockett promotions took. But I have a lot more fucking money than Jim Crockett did. I’m not gonna sit back and take this fucking shit.”

Probably the most uncharacteristic thing I have ever heard Tony Khan say.
The next question centers on the start of the scrum:

“You see without a doubt your biggest star, your biggest mainstream attraction… He goes off the rails a bit toward your EVPs and another of your big young stars. You, as the leader of the ship, how do you diffuse the situation?”

Tony Khan:

“That is a dicey situation. It is contentious and frankly challenging. But, I have to do what’s best for the sake of the company. Everybody you’re talking about are great wrestlers with big reputations… Some of them have been around from the beginning of the company. Some have been around for about a year now… The fact is, these are people that drive revenue, and they help create jobs for everyone. I’m not gonna comment on what you heard here tonight, but like I said earlier this week… It’s no secret that a lot of professional wrestlers don’t like each other. Now it’s probably more out in the open than it’s been in a while. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing for the pro wrestling business given the product that we produce: matches.”

The next reporter asks about the ongoing role of The Elite within the company and Tony puts them over as invaluable assets in putting together and organizing the shows, as well as mentoring younger talent and helping to grow revenue streams.
Before Tony wraps up the scrum, he singles out a young man in the press pool to ask a question. The young man asks about CM Punk’s dog, Larry, who had ran out in front of the crowd earlier.

“... Well… Larry is a live wire… he got a taste of the live crowd… I thought he had a good time. When he arrived, he seemed like he was in good spirits.”

Tony then leaves the podium.
In the coming hours, news would steadily emerge from backstage. As the story goes, the EVPs of All Elite Wrestling went to CM Punk’s locker room accompanied by Megha Parekh, AEW’s Chief Legal Officer and Director of Human Resources, along with Christopher Daniels, Fallen Angel and Manager of Talent Relations.
While in the locker room, CM Punk punched Matt Jackson, a chair hit Nick Jackson in the eye, and Ace Steel bit Kenny Omega on the arm. Larry the Dog was in peril also, later seen being carried by Megha away from the area. Brandon Cutler, Pat Buck, and Michael Nakazawa were all present. At some point Chris Jericho made his way to Punk to tell him he was a cancer to the locker room and detrimental to the company as a whole, only to be told in turn that it was none of Jericho’s business and he should leave. Aside from Megha, all parties present (aside from Jericho who arrived late) were immediately placed on paid administrative leave, pending investigation.
News dropped quickly that Punk would be out for six-to-eight months regardless of anything else due to his torn triceps suffered that night in the main event.
Aside from the injury, none of this has been 100% confirmed. None of these details exist on any official record. All accounts are, at best, third-hand information. The facts of the story changed wildly from the first 48 hours to the first two weeks, with absurd initial claims such as the Young Bucks (super)kicking down the door to Punk’s locker and Larry losing teeth in the maelstrom. To this day, no one other than those present know with any degree of certainty what happened inside that room.
But what happened outside that room was a remarkable shattering of perception about CM Punk, the Elite, but most importantly, AEW itself. In the immediate aftermath, massive fans such as myself couldn’t help but feel as if something was taken away from us. In the months since, so much has been made of getting AEW back to the old days, regaining that old feeling that made us fall in love at the beginning. We want to go back to what Jericho called the “amazing world” created by everyone at AEW, but none more so than by the Elite.
How could CM Punk so grossly and directly attack the founders and shapers of this company which, up to then, was widely hailed as the only place a wrestler would want to be? I thought back to the very last thing said to AEW cameras by Cody Rhodes, a founder whose absence loomed large that night in Chicago. A lot of people don’t realize his final words in AEW weren’t those uttered by a ladder, inside a ring where he famously claimed credit for construction of the Forbidden Door. No, it was in the bowels of the arena after his unification match with Sammy Guevara, over eight months before All Out… There, he talked about how proud he was of everything he had helped to build. Fighting back tears, he talked about how he would never feel more at home than he does in an AEW ring. “It’s Paradise, right?”

Well, that’s actually pretty wild. These guys must have a really firm grasp on the history of their careers to line up Easter eggs like that. But really, that’s all they are: Easter eggs. The Elite and Punk are all famous trolls, so they may have been hoping some obsessive fool like myself would catch on and get pulled into the rabbit hole.
The trail stops at All Out, though. We can’t go into the future and see what happens 944 days from that media scrum, and the paths of most people involved in Brawl Out seem so divergent it’d be impossible to predict with any sort of accuracy. Punk is sidelined indefinitely, perhaps permanently. Kenny and the Bucks are back in action but their contract situations have started bubbling up in dirtsheets, so we can assume Hangman won’t be far behind in those rumors.
Meanwhile over in WWE, Cody Rhodes is sitting pretty. He’s getting massive cheers the AEW fanbase refused him toward the end, when his vision lost alignment with ours. Each passing day he climbs toward a mountain top of his own. In less than two weeks from now he will go to WrestleMania and try to overcome the most impenetrable obstacle in that company: the Bloodline.
If Cody succeeds at WrestleMania, his personal story would have a crowning achievement nearly every wrestler in history would envy. The fact that he bet on himself so many times and always won is remarkable. He’ll look even better considering the stains and scars imposed on “Paradise” after his departure. Maybe he could’ve helped avoid the embarrassment of All Out, but we’ll never know and that’s not for him to dwell upon. His primary focus should be on the Tribal Chief and stopping that historic reign in its tracks at...

Ukraine’s Digital Resistance Behind Enemy Lines

The man introduced to me in the southern port city of Odesa as Taras does not look like what he is: the founder of the civilian resistance to Russia’s military occupation of southern and eastern Ukraine. He’s no tough Marshal Tito or ethereal Mahatma Gandhi. He looks, in fact, like your typical Gen Z tech worker: early 20s, lean, trendy—and he’s always online. He likes to talk about English Premier League football games from the 1980s, but only because he’s seen them on YouTube; he can name scores of Premier League players, but only because he’s used their avatars in the FIFA video game. He adores Instagram.
Since April, Taras has led a group named Yellow Ribbon, which took up the principles of nonviolent resistance soon after the Russians overran his home city of Kherson. (Taras is a pseudonym he uses to help protect his identity from his Russian enemies.) Its goal: to resist Russian occupation through peaceful means wherever possible. The group has now spread throughout the occupied territories of Ukraine, and as it has done so, its reputation has grown. Late last year, Yellow Ribbon was one of four Ukrainian groups honored with the European Parliament’s Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the European Union’s main award for the defense of human rights.

What distinguishes Yellow Ribbon from traditional nonviolent resistance movements is its emphasis on the digital. The group’s growing numbers of activists stay connected via a chatbot plugin on the group’s Telegram messaging app. Prompted by the chatbot’s automated questions, activists in the occupied territories can access various resistance tasks to carry out on the ground. The system enables Yellow Ribbon to share the materials and techniques necessary for the resistance to make its activities visible in the real world of the occupation, while safeguarding the anonymity of the participants against Russian efforts to penetrate the network. Among the clandestine actions guided by the chatbot are scrawling pro-Ukraine graffiti, tying yellow ribbons around objects in the streets, and projecting slogans onto buildings taken over by the Russian administration. Such nonviolent actions have made Yellow Ribbon famous across Ukraine—and a serious problem for Russia in the occupied areas.
At first, the Russians ignored the group to avoid amplifying its work. Eventually, as Yellow Ribbon’s activities grew, they were forced to respond. Yellow and blue paint began to disappear from shops in occupied areas. Buying anything yellow became almost impossible; people were reduced to cutting patches of the color out of old clothes.
Even Russian soldiers began to feel the effects of Yellow Ribbon’s activities. Taras told me that after graffiti appeared near the entrance of a Chechen base in Melitopol, another occupied city in southeastern Ukraine, the soldiers changed their location and started going about town in civilian clothing rather than military uniform.
Access to the Telegram chatbot has allowed resistance activists to spring up across the occupied territories; many of them were women, who, I was told, could more easily pass unnoticed by the Russian occupiers. Earlier this year, I met Liliyia Aleksandrova in Kherson, which was recaptured by Ukrainian forces late last year—though artillery shelling still roared in the background as we spoke. Prior to the occupation, Aleksandrova had, she said, been a middle-aged “mama.” When the Russians first came to Kherson, she attended some street demonstrations, but the tear gas and soldiers soon put a stop to things. “It was clear we couldn’t protest publicly anymore,” she told me. “I was thinking about what I could do for my country; I had to do something to be useful.”
On Telegram, she came across Yellow Ribbon and, using the group’s chatbot tool, she began downloading instructions for tasks. She put up yellow ribbons everywhere she could—on buildings, lampposts, and fences—and took photos. Once or twice, she was almost caught, but she continued. Her work was everywhere around the city. As we talked, we passed Yellow Ribbon graffiti on a street wall. “I did that,” Liliyia told me with quiet satisfaction.
The first time Taras saw the Russians after the February 24 invasion, they had taken an office in the city’s main square; then they took the main police station. By March 2, they were in full control of Kherson. “No one knew what would happen tomorrow or the day after,” he told me when we met earlier this year in Odesa. He’d spent most of last year living under occupation in Kherson before its liberation in November.
Ukrainian partisans have launched sporadic attacks in Russian-occupied areas, but Taras had no military training, so any resistance activity he took on had to be nonviolent. He drew inspiration from earlier causes such as Germany’s White Rose student group, which opposed the Nazis; the U.S. civil-rights movement; and Czechoslovakia’s 1989 protests that led to the Velvet Revolution. Gandhi called nonviolent resistance “mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.”
Anne Applebaum: The brutal alternate world in which the U.S. abandoned Ukraine
According to Erica Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephan, both political scientists and co-authors of the 2011 book Why Civil Resistance Works, taking up arms has traditionally given regime opponents a 26 percent chance of succeeding in their aims, whereas the tactics of nonviolent resistance have a 53 percent success rate. Countries where nonviolent, rather than violent, resistance led to change were more likely to remain democratic after the crisis ended.
Taras knew many people who wanted to act but for whom armed resistance was not an option. He could, he calculated, attract many more recruits through nonviolence. Almost anyone can participate: Its methods are highly accessible, and no specialist equipment or skills are required. He grasped that nonviolence’s main advantage over violence is scale—the number of people it can rally to a cause is exponentially greater.
Taras knew he could count on the 10 employees of the IT company he ran in Kherson, plus some people in other companies he worked with. This was enough to form the basis of what would become Yellow Ribbon. Even today, the core group of coordinators remains small—about 40 people, all of them known personally to Taras from before the occupation. Most are in their 20s.
At first, the Russians allowed residents of Kherson to protest in person, and many did, going to the central square, waving Ukrainian flags, and demanding the troops leave. Pooling cash, Taras’s group decided to buy online advertisements to spread the message. It gravitated easily from organizing IT projects to rallying support for the local protests and other pro-Ukraine activities through March and into April.
Then, in late April, a rumor spread through the city that Russia was making preparations for fraudulent referendums in occupied cities across the south. The result would be a foregone conclusion; the territories would be annexed to Russia. The resistance activists knew they had to act.
On April 23, they set up a Telegram group that they named Yellow Ribbon, a reference to the color on the Ukrainian flag, to spread pro-Ukraine messages and encourage people to paste leaflets and posters around Kherson. The platform would also work with local media to promulgate similar messages. Taras realized they could now reach hundreds of thousands of people.
Eliot A. Cohen: The shortest path to peace
“That’s what you can do with a digital component: reach larger audiences, spread more messages, get people to go out and protest, and do so successfully,” he told me. “We saw it work; things started to build like a snowball.”
The first demonstration, which took place on April 27, was modest in size—maybe 500 people. The Russians were out in force and used tear gas and stun grenades against the protesters. The physical demonstration may have been small, and was quickly put down, but online, via the Telegram channel and on social networks, it went viral. Moscow did eventually hold the referendum, but not until the end of September.
Another protest was planned for May 9, by which time things were getting more dangerous. Within five minutes, the protest was broken up by Russian forces. After the FSB, Russia’s state security police, came to town, the first local collaborators emerged, and activists started to disappear. Taras and his team made the decision to shift their strategy away from street demonstrations. If the resistance could not occupy the streets, it would occupy the online space.
In June, the group used Instagram to create a virtual street protest that included images of flags and banners on a visualization of a street in Kherson. Every person who attended had to write “Kherson is Ukraine” in the comments section. From these posts, the group calculated that 40,000 people had joined from Kherson and 16,000 from Mariupol. The Yellow Ribbon message spread across not only pro-Ukraine but pro-Russia platforms as well.
As Yellow Ribbon’s name and activities grew, new problems arose. Its activists were in constant danger of arrest. The group put several security protocols in place. Unlike specialized messaging platforms such as Signal, Telegram was already in widespread use by Ukrainians and Russians alike, rendering the app’s presence on a phone unsuspicious. Telegram can also be deleted from a phone, removing all the messages, and then downloaded again—with all of the messages still intact.
Gil Barndollar: Ukraine has the battlefield edge
Getting people out of jail became a priority for the group. That generally meant one thing: bribes. Usually, it was easy to pay Russian soldiers or local collaborators to release an activist who’d disappeared. Taras knew businessmen in the city who had dealings with the Russians, and he used them as intermediaries. He’d pay them, and they’d pay the Russians.
Then, in late September, the group set up the chatbot. The technology enabled Yellow Ribbon to radically scale up its activities, allowing it to evolve from being a local resistance movement into something more powerful: a franchised one. People like Aleksandrova began to open cabinets across the occupied territories—in Melitopol and Donetsk and Luhansk, even in Crimea.
Over coffee in Odesa, Taras showed me the chatbot homepage on his laptop. In Crimea, chatbot volunteers tied a yellow ribbon on a tree near a shipping port. In September, leaflets announcing Crimea is Ukraine! and Opening soon! were pasted on a government building there. Ukrainian-flag graffiti appeared in Donetsk, and in Melitopol posters mocked the Russian passports that locals were being pressured to get.
The group also taught people how to make stencils in the shape of the “3CY” initialism for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and, using torches, project them onto official buildings. In late January, one appeared on the Russian administration’s office in Melitopol.
David Frum: Zelensky recalled us to ourselves
Most of the time, the group judged, Russian soldiers hadn’t themselves seen the resistance graffiti or leaflets in the city, but a monitoring team would report the photo of it that subsequently appeared online. Back in May, the Russian TV channel Izvestia paraded some purported Yellow Ribbon activists from Mariupol, who claimed that they had been paid to put up leaflets (as an alternative to other hourly paid work, which encouraged Russian viewers to infer that they were prostitutes).
The Yellow Ribbon team started noticing people whom it suspected were FSB personnel using the Chatbot app to pose as activists and request to meet in person—a clear violation of security rules. The team’s members, Taras told me, also received phishing links almost daily. In this sense, the digital amplification has increased the reach and impact of the ground activity, forcing the occupier to respond to it.
Eventually, the group’s presence attracted attention in Moscow. Yellow Ribbon’s work prompted a “concerned citizen” in Crimea to message the local Russian Investigative Committee’s Telegram channel: “I request you begin investigating the terrorist activities and spreading of ideology by the Yellow Ribbon group.” On January 27, the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Moscow issued a letter saying that the activity was being investigated, and two days later, a subdivision of the ministry confirmed that it was now regarded as a criminal matter.
A Russian organization calling itself the Committee for the Defense Against Traitors released a video claiming that the group was engaged “in the information war” to push the agenda of “terrorists.” These sorts of attacks are only to be expected: The group’s activities are not just a constant reminder that the locals reject the occupation but also a living rebuttal of Russia’s entire narrative justifying its invasion.
Recently, I spoke with Ivan, a colleague of Taras’s who helped set up Yellow Ribbon back in April last year. (Again, I am using a pseudonym to protect his identity.) Another Kherson native, he is Yellow Ribbon’s main coordinator. When the Russians withdrew from the city, he went to nearby Melitopol, which remains under Moscow’s control. Ivan stayed behind enemy lines, he explained, because the group needs to ensure that the movement keeps growing, especially in that city and other still-occupied areas. “Things in Melitopol are tough,” he told me over an encrypted voice call. “The Russians have instituted an ‘anti-terrorist’ regime on the streets, which means increased patrols and video cameras everywhere. A lot of soldiers have arrived from Russia—and they are making a lot of arrests. It’s hard for us to work here now.
“The Russians can be brutal,” he went on. “But it depends on what unit they’re from—the Chechens are really bad. They think that this is their territory.”

Ivan and his fellow activists keep a low profile, especially when they go out to buy necessities. Security is paramount. “I try not to be too active on the streets but instead focus on how to bring in the materials into the city and where to hide them,” he told me. “I work with VPNs and hosts and proxies to make sure my internet connection is safe. I have five cellphones and move from safe house to safe house each night or week.”
Taras left Kherson last August, before the city was liberated. Instead, Yellow Ribbon, with its army of activists across occupied Ukraine, creates impact through a shared disgust at what Russia is doing, unifying opposition to the occupation. Its great strength lies in its digitally diffuse activism—which makes stopping it much harder for the Russians.
“I hope that liberation will come in the next three months,” Ivan said at the end of our conversation. “When it does, we will take our Ukrainian flags to the main square and celebrate with our military, as we did in Kherson.”
