2023.03.22 00:52 Luchamore Trip Report 2/15-3/6: Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka, and more!

After a couple weeks of recovery, I've had some time to write up a trip report! This vacation was the best I've ever had and I'm excited to share some highlights here, along with some mistakes I made and travel tips. My plans were to meet up with two friends for the first 1.5 weeks of the trip, then to go solo for the last week. They would fly to Chicago to connect with me, then we'd all fly over together to Narita.
Pre-flight
- I filled out the Japan entry forms to provide proof of vaccination, declare for customs, etc. We saved a pretty good amount of time with that compared to people filling out paperwork on the plane.
- For phone / internet we went with pocket wireless and it was incredibly smooth basically the whole time. We got two units for times where we'd be separated as well as a pocket translator, which was an unnecessary expense. You're not getting any added value over Google Translate.
- For daily travel we all went with Suica and that was again a very simple, intuitive experience. I'd just periodically add on funds to my Apple Wallet and ended up paying for a bunch of stuff with that rather than cash / credit. My one friend went with the actual card instead of using his phone, which had one advantage: some ticket machines would only accept Suica via card and through the app.
- For the shinkansens we skipped the JR Pass and just booked tickets that day, which was mostly fine. The machines wouldn't accept my credit card so I'd need to go talk to a person, but I knew enough about where I wanted to go and what to do I muddled through. We did opt for the Hakone Free Pass as that would cover basically all the transportation for that area and saved a little money.
- I'm fortunate to have a friend living in Japan who helped arrange a couple events for us... if you don't have that option you can try to book some tickets at Lawson, or for restaurants you can try to go 1-2 days in advance and ask about reservations.
- I tried taking a language course ahead of the trip and learning a few key phrases... I was not able to hold a conversation but the little bit I did know helped I believe. One "caution" I'll give is that if you use Google Translate to construct a sentence for you in Japanese, you're likely to get a response in Japanese!
Part 1: Tokyo
2/15 + 2/16 - Friend B unfortunately overslept and missed his first flight, so Friend A and I met up in the morning at O'Hare. I did have to check one of my bags at the gate because it was over 10 lbs, but otherwise the trip was uneventful until we arrived at Narita, where I had a momentary panic when my checked suitcase did not show up on the carousel. I talked to an agent and for some reason, they had set my bag aside from all the others behind a sign. With that out of the way, we picked up the pocket wi-fi and on our way out the door, a film crew from "Why did you come to Japan" asked us if we would do a brief interview. I recognized their logo and thought it might be fun, but I wasn't prepared for a 40 minute conversation! I mentioned I was visiting a Game Center CX exhibit and they asked me a long line of questions about meeting the show's host (Shinya Arino), what I would say to him, what games we would play, etc. Finally I had to explain we were tired and would like to be on our way. I don't believe my interview was ever shown.
By the time we got tickets and were seated on the Narita Express, we could barely stay awake. Maybe because of the fatigue we had difficulty with exiting Shinjuku station: we eventually talked to an Australian family who showed us the fare exchange kiosk where we converted our Narita Express ticket into a regular train ticket for the gate. Once we settled that we checked into our hotel (Hundred Stay Tokyo Shinjuku), briefly went out to Family Mart for snacks, then crashed for the night.

2/17 - We got up around 7 and went to a Sukiya near our hotel for breakfast, then headed over to Akihabara. Things were still opening up so we stopped for Mr. Donut, then visited a couple stores before moving further east to Yokozuna Tonkatsu Dosukoi Tanaka where we had a lunch / sumo demonstration. This was very much a tourist thing: there was a brief explanation of the sumo ceremony and technique before they invited the audience to get in sumo costumes and step in the ring and have matches with the wrestlers. I (and about 90% of the attendees) went up: this was absolutely not a serious match and was closer to improv comedy than anything. Still, we had a good time and the food was fine.
Afterward, we went back to Akihabara for a reservation at an owl cafe. We got some cute photos but I admit those owls could not have been happy, as there were 30 of them in a small room. The handlers would let one perch on your arm but were adamant you not let go of their leash, because if you did... it wouldn't be pretty. At this point we had to return to our hotel to link up with Friend B who had just arrived, then we went back to Akihabara for dinner. Dinner was at Merino, an all you can eat place where we had lamb and beef tongue in a hot pot. Fittingly, there was a collaboartion with a lamb girl V-tuber. We were again pretty wiped out after dinner and retreated back to our hotel.

2/18 - After a quick stop at Family Mart we headed to Ueno for the Tokyo National Museum. Unfortunately the special exhibition was closed, but we enjoyed the historical artifacts that were available. We had a ramen lunch at one of the restaruants at Ueno Station, then head over to Akihabara (yes, again) and crawled through the shops in more depth. We were there on Saturday afternoon so there were people everywhere, so that only lasted for a couple hours. Our bags were full so we dropped things off at the hotel, then ate dinner at a Coco Ichibanya: we all kept our orders pretty low on the scale but as advertised, there's a kick even at "2". Finally we visited Star Club, a Super Mario themed bar located nearby. Despite the gimmick, the crowd appeared to be local aside from our group. We each ordered a couple of the themed drinks and bonded with the bartender over Cowboy Bebop through the language barrier, as he was playing the soundtrack for ambience.

2/19 - Our first stop in the morning was the Ghibli Musem. While my previous visit had been lackluster, this one went much better as there was a significantly smaller crowd so early in the day. Plus, while they are still largely not supporting English, the movie shown had no dialogue and they did actually provide an English guide for the special exhibit on Future Boy Conan! The merch shop was of course seductive and we ended up with souvenirs for ourselves and friends. Our lunch plans unfortunately fell through as our targeted spot (Chillmatic, a burger place) was closed for a building inspection. We opted for another random ramen place as we walked over to the PARCO mall in Shibuya. We visited all the character stores (Nintendo, Pokemon, Capcom, etc.), which were of course also mobbed on a Sunday afternoon. At this point I had easily outgrown the space in my luggage, so our next stop was Don Quijote so Friend A and I could each buy a duffel bag. To make up for earlier we visited Shogun Burger for dinner, which was fantastic.

2/20 - Our first travel day, but before heading out we did a little more shopping in Shinjuku: my friends and I really got into visiting every BookOff we could find. I also took the opportunity to stop at McDonalds for an early lunch and try their "exclusive" menu items. We then boarded the Odakyu line to make our way out to Hakone. In hindsight, I definitely should have forwarded a bag to our Kyoto hotel: I had a very uncomfortable trip moving between trains and walking uphill but after a couple hours we made it to Ajisai Onsen Ryokan. The building was in a traditional style but with modern furnishings: to paint a picture, our room had futons and an Amazon Fire Stick. We booked times to reserve some of the baths, then walked to a local gyoza place - and I mean local, a bunch of schoolchildren stampeded in with us as it opened - then headed back to the hotel for our evening bath. To cap the evening we enjoyed some sake and watched a few episodes of Spy x Family.

2/21 - We got an early start with our morning bath and quickly came to a realization. The previous night we had booked the "indoor / outdoor" bath, which had both an indoor and outdoor bath but critically kept the showers indoors. For the morning we were in the "outdoor" bath, which... had the showers outdoors. When it was right around freezing. Afterward we ate breakfast at the hotel, then went on the "Hakone Loop". We started by walking through Gora Park and participating in a brief tea ceremony, then took the rope car up to Owaukudani. We were lucky and there were clear skies so Mt. Fuji was very visible in the distance. Unfortunately part of the ropeway was out of service so we took a bus down to Lake Ashi, which we then crossed by boat. We quickly stopped for snacks then walked along Ancient Cedar Avenue before catching a bus back closer to our hotel. We unfortunately missed the last cable car for the day - they stop before 4:30 - but we managed to figure out the local bus line to get back. After a brief rest we found dinner at Pub Stop Pizza & Bar and took in some local entertainment (a TV was playing Fast and the Furious 7).

2/22 - Another bath, another hotel breakfast, and a quick stop at the Hakone Art Museum before we got on our way to our next destination. I asked / begged for us to take a cab back down the mountain to Hakone-Yumoto, which saved me from more luggage struggles. At the station we stopped in Eva-ya: I had only learned yesterday that Hakone is the setting for much of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but luckily they had some cover files and sweets ready for me to buy. After a couple hour trip on the shinkansen we arrived at Kyoto and with a bit of fumbling got to our hotel. The key here is that there is a second floor walkway that runs North - South through the station and doesn't require paying train fare. Our Kyoto hotel (Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Ekimae) had a very slick entrance way: it blended in with the building to the point you'd think you're walking towards a wall without signage. We did some laundry, then went next door to the Yodobashi to pick up a couple items (Friend A needed new sneakers) and literally got lost again. After again getting reoriented, we headed back to Kyoto Station where we got conveyor belt sushi. These places do technically exist where I'm from (US) but this was still one of my favorite moments on the trip.

2/23 - Kicked off the day at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. The bulk of the museum is an impossibly large manga library, which didn't serve me too well, but I enjoyed the history sections. One room was devoted to sculptures of the hands of famous artists, which was certainly a choice. They also had an artist there who would draw sketches of you for 1500 yen. I was a little worried I was paying for the equivalent of a carnival caricature, but the skill and detail were much better than that. Be advised, the artists are only available on holidays and weekends.
Afterward I took the train down to Osaka to meet a friend living in Japan for... you guessed it more shopping. We visited the Capcom Cafe first and checked out the rest of the nerdy stores at Daimaru Umeda. Unlike in Shibuya, we did need to get a timed entry ticket for the Nintendo store, so we went over to Mandarake to kill time. After finishing up in Umeda we hit up the Daimaru / PARCO at Shinsaibashi, then visited the Dotunburi Glico sign and walked the river. They took my picture and when I offered to take theirs they replied "no... I'm not a tourist". Oof. In the evening I met back up with my travel group and had udon at a spot in Kyoto Station.

2/24 - Slightly mixed things up here: we went to the Imperial Palace in order to get tickets for Katsura Imperial Villa. Unfortunately, same day tickets were not available as we expected, so we instead had to get them for Sunday 2/26. Still visited the palace, and in spite of the rain still had fun. Then back to Osaka where we ended up visiting Daimaru again - the other guys liked some photos I sent so much they wanted to see it too. Had takoyaki for lunch, then took the train to the Osaka Aquarium. The absolutely massive tank at the center was very impressive. Then stayed in the area and went to the park to wat a New Japan Pro Wrestling show. This was one of the first shows that allowed the whole audience to cheer: people were quiet but by the end of the night things were rocking. Interestingly they still only sat people in every other chair. Lastly while the other guys went to bed I had read on Twitter there was a party near our hotel to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Fox. Stopped by there and while it was a little awkward at first once I found the more gregarious / drunk people there it was a good time. One guy insisted I get in front of a camera and talk for a second, and it showed up in a video they posted on Twitter.

2/25 - Went to Nara and saw the deer. The deer are docile if you don't have food, friendly if you do, and absolutely terrifying to children. The amount of "yada yada yada" and "kowai" I heard... At first we were giving whole crackers out, but we learned that we could break them up, leave them on our palm, get them to bow, etc. Headed over to Todai-ji and saw the huge Buddha. It was in fact very, very large. Doubled back and played with the deer a bit more, then took the train to Kyoto. I took the lull in the afternoon to visit the office of Edit Mode, a clothing maker that specializes in video game goods. They occasionally host an "open house" at their office and we were lucky enough to be there during one. For dinner we ate okonomiyaki at a restaurant in the Yodobashi building, then afterward took a trip to the nearest BookOff before hitting the hay.

2/26 - This was definitely our biggest mixup on the trip. We had been planning to go to Fushimi Inari in the morning but there were some scheduling issues:
  1. We didn't take not of how long the hike would be (2-3 hours).
  2. We overslept (woke up at 7:30 instead of 6).
  3. We had a hard stop time to make the Katsura Imperial Villa tour we'd booked on Thursday.
We probably should've just not gone to Fushimi Inari at all but we did and ended up arriving with less than an hour to stay. We walked up the steps for about 15 minutes, turned back, checked out the start of the path, and left :( At least the Villa was a good experience: we had an English speaking guide (+ recording) which helped a lot. The context felt necessary to understanding how carefully the whole area was designed.
Next up was one last stop at our Kyoto hotel before taking a quick train ride to Osaka. We stayed at the Hotel Granvia Osaka, which is literally right above the station, so the location was certainly convenient. We ate sushi for lunch at one of the many restaurants in the building, took a quick nap, then went out for some taiyaki. Specifically, I forced my friends to go to a particular chain that was collaborating with a V-Tuber. back to the hotel where we checked out then hopped on the train to Osaka. Checked into our hotel and people napped for a bit before we headed out again. Got taiyaki (making my friends visit a chain with a Hololive collab). More shopping followed with a stop at Mandarake, then to Don Quijote where I bought another small suitcase. We ended up more or less skipping dinner and heading out for karaoke, where we had some snacks and drinks.

2/27 - For my friends' final day we went to Universal Studios Japan. This could be its entire own post but I recommend looking for tickets at least a month in advance, get the Express Pass, and get there early. The park is supposed to open at 9, and even though we showed up at 8:30 people were already pouring inside. Our main objective was Super Nintendo World but our timed entry wasn't for a couple hours, so we tried Jujutsu Kaisen 4D (okay), Spider-Man (good), and Jurassic Park the Ride (okay) first. As for Super Nitendo World itself... as long as you know it's intended for kids and has about a 4 hour lifespan you'll enjoy it. The Mario Kart ride was very good the AR game was interesting tech, and the restaurant food was alright. Really though, the Flying Dinosaur which went on afterward was incredible and easily my favorite ride. Unfortunately, Friend A became ill afterward so we ended up bailing to go back to the hotel and rest. After he felt better we grabbed dinner at a local ramen place: the gimmick was they lined the bowl with slices of pork, which you could then put in the broth to cook a little and season the whole bowl.

2/28 - My two friends left for America, so we checked out of our room and I checked into a smaller one at the same spot. This hotel didn't have laundry machines, just an expensive service (200 yen to clean one pair of underwear), so instead I found a laundromat nearby and caught up with family by phone while I waited. On the way back to the hotel I stopped at another Yodobashi, where I committed a gaffe: you're supposed to check out on each floor. Once I apologized a bunch and paid, I grabbed lunch at Wendy's and got settled into my new room. For dinner I went to another of the restaurants in the building, then took a train to Namba to see a retro video game bar. A couple drinks and a chat with the bartender later, I headed back for the night.

3/1 - A very nerdy shopping day in Osaka: first to the Daimaru character shops, then over to Parco character shops, then I just used Google Maps to hit BookOffs one after the other. I made my way south until I hit DenDen Town where I stopped in every store I saw until I had to break away for dinner. A local friend helped me book a reservation in Kobe Took the train out to Kobe where a friend had helped me make a reservation at a steak restaurant. I went for the "modarately" cheap option that was about $100 total and loved it from beginning to end. Also strangely this was the only restaurant anywhere I could tip: you had to tip individually and could only max it out at 500 yen. I tipped the two waiters, the chef, and the host / barker outside (who had good English so we talked a bit).

3/2 - My Fushimi Inari revenge trip! I got there around 9am so things were already pretty busy, but I did get the chance to chat with one of the tour guides while I had a morning coffee. The starting area was pretty busy and even as I went along, I ran into a lot of people but there was still enough space to take photos and see everything. I definitely paused at a few points: even walking 20,000 steps daily on the trip hadn't prepared me for all the stair climbing. I'd also suggest that you don't NEED to go all the way to the top: there's just a store up there that completely obscures the view, the better views are earlier in the hike. With that said, I still really enjoyed myself, taking a different route back down. I grabbed a couple of snacks and took the train back to Osaka, where I finished up exploring Namba and went with a friend for an unagidon dinner. I'd had broiled eel before as sushi but never as the full entree and found it delicious!

3/3 - After checking out of the hotel and forwarding two of my bags to Tokyo, I caught the shinkansen but made a detour while in Yokohama to visit the Gundam Factory. The Gundam is very impressive in person and I would definitely recommend visiting in the early evening to see it after dark if possible. I proceeded onto Shinjuku where I ran into another issue: I was staying at a capsule hotel and immmediately realized I was not comfortable there. Everyone's bags were kept in a locker room that was not closely monitored, there were signs everywhere advising the hotel was not responsible for any theft... I should have done more reading to understand where I'd be staying. I would have been better off in a hostel, at least that would've been cheaper! I did at least have a chance to visit Shogun Burger again for dinner, after which I booked a new hotel for the next night, then got a few hours of restless sleep as I heard every snore and cough from my neighbors.

3/4 - I rose early and walked to Shinjuku Gyoen Garden. You really can use Suica in a lot of places, they even accepted it here! Most plants weren't in bloom yet but I did spot a lone cherry blossom tree that had blossomed: as I passed by it later in my walk a dozen people had crowded around for photos. A lot of stuff was not in bloom yet but I did see one cherry tree had blossomed at least. After getting my fill of nature I ventured over to Nakano Broadway. Out of all the nerdy shopping I did, this spot was my least favorite: maybe if I knew Japanese I would've fared better but because I didn't, I found all the various specialty stores confusing to navigate. I stopped back at the capsule hotel to pick up my luggage, then headed to Nipponbashi to check into my backup hotel (S-Peria Inn Nihonbashi Hakozaki). This new spot was pretty out of the way so I opted to just grab some sushi from a nearby supermarket and park it for the evening with the hope of a strong start tomorrow.

3/5 - Checked out of my hotel and headed over to Shinjuku to check in to my final hotel (Kadoya Hotel) for the trip. Dropped off my bags and confirmed my other ones had shown up safely, then headed to Shibuya Parco for the Final Fantasy 35th Anniversary pop-up. Shopped there for a bit, then headed back to Chillmatic and this time they were open! It was a neat experience but I think I preferred Shogun Burger. Next stop was Meijijingu - I didn't leave a votive and instead just walked around, including a stop in one of the gardens. Then over to HMV Books where there was a 20th Anniversary Celebration for Game Center CX. However busy I expected it to be, it was not... at all. I was the only person who paid the 800 yen for the museum part in the 30-45 minutes I was there. But I did enjoy it and picked up a T-shirt. I also found a small pop-up gallery titled "9Days" on a lower floor that was interesting. It was getting late but I pressed onto Akihabara where I went to the Radio Kaikan tower. I stayed there until closing, then headed over to Tokyo Video Gamers, a bar. They had closed down last year but were in the middle of a soft re-launch when I stopped by. Finally, I headed back to my hotel and ordered some Dominos because I was tired of walking around.

3/6 - Checked out of my hotel, but left my bags so I could go eat breakfast at Eggslut at the station. Took the Narita Express to the airport, shopped a little bit at the airport shops, then the long sad flight back to the US.
That was a linguistic dreadnought so if anything is unclear let me know and I'll try to clean it up. Hope you enjoyed and it helps with your own planning: I'll answer questions as best as I can!

Day 1: Casablanca-Meknes-Volubilis-Fes
You will be met on arrival at Casablanca airport or at your hotel and then driven the short distance to Casablanca, Morocco's largest city and the modern, economic capital. here you'll be welcome to enter the impressive Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world and one of only two in the country that allow access to non-Muslims. In the afternoon, you will travel west towards Fes, stopping off at Meknes and Volubilis. Meknes, surrounded by vineyards and rich arable land, is an important, historic, Imperial city of the Sultan Moulay Ismail of the 17th and 18th centuries. Here you can see the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail himself, the Bab Mansour gate with its beautiful zellij mosaics and marble pillars, and the Sahrij Soanni Bassin, a huge reservoir that supplies the city and the Imperial gardens. Next, are the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis dating from the first century BC and you'll be able to walk through the Triumphal Arch and see many beautifully preserves mosaic floors depicting scenes from the Roman myths. Then onward to Fes, through fertile valleys in the foothills between the Rif and Atlas Mountain ranges. arriving in the early evening to check into your traditional riad in the heart of the ancient, medieval medina where you will stay in B&B overnight.
Day 2: Investigating Fantasic Fes
After a traditional breakfast in your riad, it will be time to explore the cultural capital of Morocco, the ancient medina (old city) of Fes, passing though its narrow, winding alleyways among the hustle and bustle, donkeys and horses, the exotic sights and smells of a working, medieval city; the largest urbanized pedestrian area in the world. Here you can see the delicious fresh fruit piled high, mountains of aromatic spices and intricate. You will visit the famous traditional tanneries and to the Al Qaraouine university which is the oldest in the world. In the afternoon, after a satisfying lunch in an authentic Moroccan restaurant in the heart of the medina, Your journey will continue with a visit of the Jewish quarter, the King's Palace, ceramic factory and the Merenid Tombs, perched on a hillside overlooking the medina and providing a breathtaking panoramic view of the old city. Then you will return to your riad home for the night.
Day 3: Fes - Middle Atlas Mountains - Sahara Desert
Following breakfast, it's off to Ifrane, a charming Alpine-styled, chalet filled town, nestling prettily in the mountains and known as the " Switzerland of Morocco", Catching tantalising glimpses of both the Middle and High Atlas mountains as you yourselves ascend into them, you'll next stop at Azrou, "The Rock" in the local Berber language, a lovely village in the heart of the magnificent cedar forests, the most extensive in the country. Here live the Barbary Apes, actually a type of macaque monkey, who may steal your lunch. As you get nearer to Merzouga, your destination for the night, you will see a gradual change in the landscape as the desert begins to creep in. On we go, through the mountain pass of Tizi Ntalghamt to Midelt and then through the verdant Ziz valley, carved by a river through volcanic rock. There will be plenty of stops for photo opportunities along the route. Passing through quaint Berber mountain villages and then the larger settlements of Erfoud and Rissani you will come to the village of Merzouga during the evening to spend the night in a Kasbah/hotel where dinner and breakfast are provided as well as delicious, hot, sweet, mint tea on your arrival. Very refreshing.
Day 4: A Camel Trek and a Night Camping in the Sahara
First, a sumptuous breakfast and then a chance to visit the village of Khamlia and interact with the Gnawa, the local people who are descended from slaves brought to Morocco from the Sudan. They have a unique lifestyle and they will play their delightful, traditional music for you. Later you'll get the chance to explore Rissani, the original home of the Alaouites who created a dynasty and are still the ruling royal family in Morocco to this day. Rissani is a walled town, or ksar, with numerous high towers and has a large open nomad market. Then you will be driven back to Merzouga, where your camel awaits! An experienced professional guide will take you on an unforgettable ninety minute camel trek through the shifting desert sands and ergs (dunes). After you arrive at your desert camp you will have the opportunity to watch a spectacular sunset over the glittering desert dunes. It's the wonder of camping in the desert tonight, where the stars are so numerous and so bright that you really feel that you could just reach out and touch them. Dinner and overnight in a berber camp.
Day 5: The Gorgeous Gorges of Todra - Ouarzazate
An early start, as you are awoken to experience the splendour of the sun rising over the sand dunes, then you will ride your camel gently back to a hotel for breakfast, during which ride, you cannot fail to notice the shifting and changing of the shadows cast by the dunes, lengthening and shrinking as the day progresses. After breakfast, the journey to Ouarzazate begins with a drive through the 300 metre deep canyon of the Todgha Gorges cut through the easternmost tip of theHigh Atlas Mountains where you can enjoy some hiking around the pretty village of Tinghir. The Tinghir and Todgha gorges are the highest and narrowest in Morocco and, some would say, the most beautiful. The next stop is "Rose City" the Berber town of Kelaat Mgouna, where every year, usually in mid-May (though the times may vary), at rose harvest time, there is a celebration of the Festival of Roses. This provides an opportunity for the local growers to meet up ans sell their wares, most notably rose water which will leave your clothes, body and bed linen smelling sweetly long after it is applied. After this you will travel on to the fertile oasis of Skoura, surrounded by huge groves of palm trees with stunning views of the mighty Atlas mountains. Finally, you'll finish your day with an evening arrival in Ouarzazate where you will enjoy your dinner and stay overnight in an hotel.
Day 6: Rose City - Kasbahs - Marvelous Marrakech
After a hearty breakfast explore the film sets and studios of Ouarzazate, "Africa's Hollywood" whose astonishing scenery and topography have lured some of the world's leading film-makers and directors to make use of the landscape. These are the most famous and largest film studios in all of the African continent. You may visit the studio museum where you can see props and other items of interest from films such as "Gladiator", "The Mummy" and "Indiana Jones" as well as parts of the popular TV series "Game of Thrones". Afterwards, you will visit Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the biggest in Morocco. Take a stroll to explore the traditional Moroccan architecture that composes the kasbah, home to the Glaoui people, descendants of one of the last great Berber chieftains, Et Hami El Glaoui who ruled in the 18th century. This central region of the country is vibrant and exciting and surely one of the most romantic areas of Morocco, huddled between fertile, green river valleys with their extensive palmeries and burnished red mud-brick houses, roasting under the blazing Moroccan sun in dazzling colours beneath an azure sky. Then it's time to continue on your journey, through the astounding Tizi n'tichka Pass, over two and a half kilometres above sea-level, along twisting, turning mountain roads dotted with picturesque Berber villages until you reach Marrakech. The tour ends when you are safely deposited at your hotel or riad.

I didn’t take the best before photo- “after” photos were taken today. For the first time in almost 10 years, I bought a bikini 🫣
I’m a mom of 3 who believed my body was just destined to look how it did after 3 kids. Yes, I still have a funny mom belly button- but I’ll take it. I was 135 pre-kids, and my initial goal was to get back to my pre-mom weight.
I used to eat out of stress, I replaced that habit with crafts- paint by number, gem art, etc. I do Body Pump group fitness at the gym, recently started running and began a marathon training plan to have a schedule. Ran my first 13 miles last Sunday. Absolutely bananas.
The first 30 days were the hardest. I started in June 2022, and used to believe counting calories was for EDs. Now I know it’s not- and I was eating the same amount of food my 180lb husband was eating. No surprise I became 180lbs and sustained it for as long as I did. I started counting calories in July 2022, and started using a food scale in August 2022. Stuck with my deficit through the holidays. Celebrated/looked forward to the holiday day vs gorging for months. Made the meals that much more enjoyable.
Big turning point for me was realizing a lot of highly-palatable processed foods are purposefully designed to be profitable & addictive.
Anyway- I feel incredible. I was initially frustrated weight loss took/would take so long, but now I’m glad it does. It gave me enough time to learn so much & I’m still learning; about me, about the process.
I will never, ever, ever regret the every day choices I’ve made to get to this point. My kids think my “muscles” are cool, and they think how far I can run is super rad. My middle boy runs a mile with me weekly- he’s a big reason I started running, he enjoys it & I couldn’t run far before.
Don’t give up, you won’t regret it. You’re stronger than your cravings and the instant gratification- you won’t remember all of that. You can see it through- it’s worth it.

2023.03.15 19:29 micronesiarain Episode 13- "Season Six Reunited" (Part 1) 🗣️🤬

Episode 13-
the scene opens up in the midst of an explosive argument between Blondie and Wren
Bellaron: Own your words, it went too far. Pack it up and leave honey, your shit has hit the fan.
Wren: Until you’re ready to apologize sincerely, don’t bother speaking to me.
Blondie: What it comes down to-
Wren: Ah, ah, ah ah ah ah, don’t speak.
the scene switches over to Greantee breaking down and being comforted by Zodya
Greantee: You tried to turn every single person against me. Every single person.
Wren: Well damn, can you blame me!
Greantee: For a moment, can you drop it, and acknowledge that it wasn’t funny to me?
the screen quickly cuts to black
the camera pans up to reveal Micro standing alone on stage
Micro Episode 13 Look
Micro: Good evening, and welcome to the reunion of Micro’s Drag Race Season Six. What we just witnessed was the most intense and dramatic reunion in MDR history. But first, let’s go back to earlier today, and see the calm before the storm.
the scene rewinds back to earlier in the day with Micro sitting on stage at the beginning of the reunion
Micro: Hello, hello, and welcome!! I’m your hostess, Micro, and we’re here today to fish on all the highs and lows of Micro’s Drag Race Season Six. Let’s take a look back at the farewell season that had fans across the world buzzing.
a montage plays of iconic moments from Season Six. Included are Slerna’s entrance, Wren’s performance in the calendar challenge, Blondie vs Wren’s lipsync, Zodya’s musical performance, Bellaron’s ball looks, and the Twinxies girl group performance
Micro: Our first group of queens may have left the competition early, but the impact they left behind was long lasting. Please welcome Layla Lorel, Nicole Jush, and Blu!

Micro: Welcome girls, how we feeling?!
Blu: To quote myself from the season, “...”!
Micro: Layla, you were one of the first queens to go. But you always showed out on the runway. Were there any runway categories you wish you were able to be part of from later in the season?
Layla: Oh my, thank you so much! For me, I would've been looking forward to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World runway theme, I'd wanted to be the Colossus of Rhodes, and just sway my tits!
Micro: Any thoughts on the fashion this season?
Layla: As I just said I'd wanted to partake in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World runway, I just wanted to compliment Grean and Bellaron on the amazing looks! They fucking killed it! And talking about the promo, everybody ate!
Micro: Lastly, you’ve shown so much class and heart throughout this experience, and that means so much to me. Do you have any final message to the viewers?
Layla: Awww, love y'all! Always remember that you shouldn't be afraid of being yourself, that was what happened to me, I was just completely nervous, with amazing people around me, I thought they were completely better than me, but I still didn't give up! I wanted to prove myself that I got this!
Micro: Thanks Layla! Nicole, let’s move down to you.
Micro: When the season started, people had some mixed reactions to you being on the cast. Where does that come from?
Nicole: I believe people had those reactions due to what happened with me in the past. I was blocked from the Fandom for being underage in 2021 and a big deal was made out of nothing. People would make fun of me after I left, people who I thought were my friends made my name be a curse word around the Discord servers... Let's also mention my alt account, but I won't get into it 'cause y'all already know. Anyways, those were dark, dark times. I came back in June 2022 after I had enough age to be on the Fandom and I just wanna let all that behind now…
Micro: During Episode 1, you were in the top, but missed out on being in the top two. Do you think you should’ve won that week? How would it have changed your journey on this season?
Nicole: I don't think I should've won nor been in the top two, 'cause my sisters Grean and Blu slayed the house down but I think that if I did win it would change my course on the season. If I was in the top two though, I think my fate would be the same. If I won, I think the fire under my ass would be more lit and I would try at least to write a lipsync on Episode Four!
Micro: Where do you stand with queens from the cast? Who are you close to still? Do you have bad blood with anyone?
Nicole: I think everyone on this season was super, super sweet and we all just gathered as a family for sure, however I must say I haven't had the opportunity of being close to anyone after we wrapped. I did participate on Wren's RPG which I failed successfully but after that I did just get back to my usual friends sadly. Bad blood with anyone... Yeah, I don't have much problems with anyone, just y'know, the transphobia that happened.
Micro: Lastly, what do you hope is your legacy as a drag artist?
Nicole: I hope my legacy is leaving a good perspective of who I am to everybody. I don't think I made everyone really sure of who I am and what I'm capable to do on this season, and I hope I'm capable of showing that after it.
Micro: Thank you Nicole. Moving down to the queen who started off at the top of the competition, Blu!
Micro: You started off the competition strong, being in the top two for the first challenge. What did it feel like to know you had set yourself at the front of the pack?
Blu: Honestly, there was a whole mix of emotions. I didn't know most of these girls coming in, so managing to slay the majority of these girls on the runway was surprising but validating. But it also made me nervous since my first impression's now been set so high, and, well... we saw how that went.
Micro: After the premiere, it felt like you didn’t quite see yourself as this strong competitor that the rest of us saw. Would you say that’s a fair assessment? If so, what was getting in the way of seeing how amazingly talented you were?
Blu: Of course that's a fair assessment, because I have one word for you: school. Sure, I slayed the premiere because all I had to show was a runway, and I know I always slay those. But after the premiere, life just got rougher. Suddenly my homework piled up and then maxis were thrown into the mix, and both of them stressed me out too much; if I knew I couldn't give 100% anymore then what's the point of believing in myself?
Micro: Were there any challenges later in the season that you wish you were around for? Or any runway looks you wish you could’ve shown off?
Blu: Well, these bitches are lucky I didn't return just in time for the two verse challenges that came after because I know I would've CLEARED! And as for the runways... the nature ball looked like a lot of fun (minus that lumberjack category), and the ancient wonders runway looked awesome too.
Micro: After being so close to returning to the competition in the makeover challenge, but ultimately losing out to Slerna, how frustrating was it to see her exit the competition after coming back? And how do you think you would’ve done in those final episodes if you were the one to come back?
Blu: I've expressed loudly and clearly to close friends how pissed I was at what happened. Obviously the future's unpredictable, and Slerna had a valid excuse to bow out, but what ended up happening just made that whole returning episode pretty much pointless. Let me stop being bitter though, if I'd returned with a clearer mindset than when I got eliminated... I could see myself doing well in all the challenges, especially the verse challenges I mentioned earlier. The only one I know I'd flop for sure is the roast. I am NOT a comedy girl, and looking back I was lucky to get cut right before the Snatch Game because I would've tanked that too.
Micro: What do you want your legacy as a queen to be? When people think of Blu, what do you want them to be reminded of?
Blu: How do I express this so it makes sense... I want to be the Lineysha Sparx of MDR. She's that one queen on that really great season who may have been a more forgettable middle out, but she still managed to be on top for an episode (technically 2 for Lineysha but anyways); even if we weren't the most memorable queens on our original season, we're both still iconic and I know people want Lineysha back on All Stars (and hopefully me too if there's an All Stars 3!)
Micro: Thank you ladies. We’ll bring you back out later to join the rest of the queens. But for now, head backstage and enjoy a moment of relaxation.
Micro: Next up are two enemies turned friends turned frenemies, Blondie Dahl and Alex Carter!
Blondie Reunion Look
Alex Reunion Look
Blondie Dahl and Alex Carter
Micro: Blondie, Blondie, Blondie. We have a lot to get into, so let’s just dive into it.
Blondie: Let’s do it!
Micro: Tell me a little bit about your backstory in the drag world. You’re a huge name in the scene, and have a bit of a reputation!
Blondie: Well first, thank you Mirco calling me pretty. But I am a huge name as I am the first drag daughter of the famous Elizah Cara and I pretty much became a legend through pageants and competitions. That's where I get my mentality from. I know that I'm an awful c*nt but it's how I learn to be the best drag superstar. And cmon, the people LUV ME! AND I WUV THEM SO VERY MUCH!
Micro: You came into this season with a bang. We need to talk about the fight in Untucked at the start of this competition. You had made some remarks that some people have taken as being transphobic. This is your chance to set the record straight. What was your intention with those comments?
Blondie: Well I think it's funny that you said that because a lot of other girls were making dark humour jokes and I follow suit and people laughed. Notably Nicole & Bella. It wasn't my intention to hurt as I know lots of people who are under the trans umbrella and I love to uplift them. It's weird how I was the only one to get singled out which was probably homophobic. So sad.
Micro: Following Episode 1, there seemed to be a target on you from the other queens. Did you feel like they were stuck on the Untucked moment?
Blondie: Absolutely, you got to understand that each episode is spaced apart and there would be days we get breaks and they still were harped on it. Like I was finally told to stop like around week 3 or 5 and I stopped and they continued with it. They wanted me to be so upset but I could care less. Why were they so harped on me being awful when they did shitty things and said bad things themselves? Like get a job. They just knew I was that bxtch and wanted me gone.
Micro: Was there anyone in the cast that you were able to rely on as a friend amidst all of the drama?
Blondie: Meh... I had Nicole but she was eliminated. And then Bella was such a flip flip. I think she wanted this heroic edit to save me but then call me out at the same time which was weird. Like you knew it was a joke, you laughed, and encouraged the jokes. It wasn't until every said for me to stop that you suddenly grew a conscience? She then made a public stance on me which helped a lot, but I honestly don't know if I can trust her. So I had no one.... oh wait, Summer was cool.
Micro: Another controversial moment came from the design challenge in Episode 7. The guest judge, Yuka, had a lot of thoughts about your look, and some of those issues spilled into Untucked. Where do you stand with this now?
Blondie: Whose that? Oh the one who called me "ignorant." Um, I still feel the same way. She was a nobody whose earpiece told her to say that. She's nothing but a failed actress who wanted to be relevant. Like I had pyramids and I went with Cleopatra, how horrible of me. Like get over it, its not like I did some horrible thing of making fun of her. I just honoured her and yall took it too far. So my message is who are you? That's right, an actor who wasn't cast. Thank you~
Micro: We reached out to Yuka for a comment and uh…she sent quite the strongly worded message! Moving right along!
Micro: In the makeover challenge, you were paired with Alex, after a season of you two not getting along. Yet by the end of the week, it seemed as though you two had made up. But once the season had wrapped, I heard that the drama continued. Tell me about that.
Blondie: Well what I'll say is this. Look at who started the argument first. The irrelevant one! I thought we were friend but she knew she was getting kicked off and wanted more camera time. She kept pushing that I was Transphobic, I called her out, she admitted to being fake, and I dragged her. Then she tried putting her hands on me, the dirty bitch, and I called security on her. Like that's so awful. I'll never trust her again. However, she seems to be nicer now with my drag family, so know who's what mentality the bitch will have tomorrow.
Micro: Do you think Alex was being genuine during the makeover challenge? What switched between then and now for things to take such a negative turn?
Blondie: Absolutely not. She admitted to being fake and she got kicked out. A necessary evil. You should hear about the plane ride home that we had to share. Disgusting! But yea. She said she threw it and kept the transphobic things going so I was like over it and called her out. And that's the tea.
Micro: How much of Blondie is a persona? Where do you draw the line between who you are out of drag, versus who you are in drag? And what do you think about some queens saying that having a character was just an excuse for bad behavior?
Blondie: Blondie Dahl as a character is a creation to be purposely rude, awful, annoying, manipulate, and crosses the line. That's who she is. While in real life, I am so sweet and had tons of friends in the fandom. All the stuff I said were as jokes and even the stuff I answer with now had some. Now did I go to far? No, because I could've went worse, but I apologized like three times because I sense it affected some people and others decided to insert themselves for camera time. Alex is who I'm referring to. Does it excuse all of it, nah, I can admit that, but overall know that it didn't come from a place of malice.
Micro: As one of the most controversial and talked about queens in MDR history, I have one final question for you. Would you do it all over again?
Blondie: Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Maybe if the pay’s good and you don't rob me. Like stop trying to make me have a Jan edit, I'm so much prettier and more talented than most of the girls in this season. Like who’s really a star here besides me? Well I guess Greentree and Summer, but who else! But on a serious note, I would only come back if Alex was there too. Because I WUV THEM SO WERY WERY MUCH! blows kiss cutely
Micro: Thank you Blondie. Moving along, we have a queen who left viewers shocked when she was asked to sashay away. It’s Alex Carter!
Micro: Early on, you were involved in the discussion about designing your own looks vs using looks from other artists. Has your opinion on that changed since the season?
Alex: My opinion on that has changed a bit. I do still see it as a form of drag. But to me I feel like it needs to be judged differently than written and hand drawn drag. Especially when paper drag, written, and hand drawn are all competing next to each other.
Micro: You started off the competition with some really dominating performances, proving yourself as a strong competitor. And then after falling in the bottom, that one lipsync brought it all to an end. Had you been able to make it through that lipsync, where do you think you would’ve placed in the season?
Alex: I think I definitely could’ve made it to at least minimum couple more weeks if not all the way. I would like to address my lip sync performance and say that I had a terrible night of sleep the day before and normally I’m quite the lip syncer.
Micro: You and Blondie seemed to be like oil and water in this competition. Where do you think the tension and conflict between the two of you started?
Alex: The tension definitely started when she decided to say those comments towards Slerna which were in fact not jokes or said jokingly. Unlike the edit makes you wanna believe. It just got worse from there when she didn’t lift a finger for our group challenge the week after that and how unhelpful she was during our makeover. She’d be gone for several hours at a time and we had to really rush out that last day because of it.
Micro: When it came to the makeover challenge, Wren paired you with Blondie. What was running through your mind when you knew your fate in the race would be tied to someone you’d had so many issues with?
Alex: I mean me personally I wouldn’t have allowed blondie to return at all even for just a shot at returning. But besides that, I mean wren and I have talked it out and we’re still great friends even after that shady incident. I do feel like my potential was cut short due to being paired with them and for the terrible sleep I got before the lip sync.
Micro: After the makeover challenge, it seemed as though you and Blondie had made up and gotten a better understanding of one another. But since the season finished, tensions have risen once again. What changed, and where do the two of you stand right now?
Alex: For the record we barely got along even when we “made up”. Our hug was faker than Blondie’s first apology. I’d say we don’t really stand anywhere. I kinda tend to not even really acknowledge them. But we’ve competed else where and we were fine there. So I think on a scale, we just above the line between neutral and bad.
Micro: Thanks ladies. I know things aren’t on the best terms right now between the two of you, but thank you for showing up tonight to discuss this. The two of you can head backstage, and we’ll bring you out later.
Micro: This next group of queens just missed out on a spot in the finale, but never failed to deliver when it came to the drama. Please welcome Summer Winters, Slerna Jimbles, and Bellaron!
Summer Reunion Look
Slerna Reunion Look
Bellaron Reunion Look
Summer Winters, Slerna Jimbles, and Bellaron
Micro: Summer Winters, nice to see you my dear!
Summer: Thank you for having me!
Micro: Your drag daughter, Tommy, was a contestant on Season Five. And it seemed like that was a major reason why you took part in this competition. How long have you known Tommy, and what did it mean for you to continue what she started last season?
Summer: It was really nice to come in and prove what imvu can do. I came in with the attitude that I would just excel, then I realised it was wayyyy harder than it looked, but I'm grateful I lasted as long as I did. I've known Tommie for about 9 months, and she just keeps on growing!
Micro: A main conflict early on was the difference between queens who made their own looks, and queens who outsourced looks from other designers. Despite being someone who makes their own looks, you didn’t take seen to have an issue with queens who used other designers. What’s your take on this now?
Summer: I honestly think that you still need a level of taste to pick out good runways, so I'm not too far against it. Plus some girlies who did make their own were possibly lacking in a bit of taste...
Micro:It felt like your journey this season was about really believing in yourself, and making your mark as an individual. Do you think you accomplished that?
Summer: I had an incident irl where it really took away all my self confidence. It really affected me and I think the Summer we saw in the early stages of the competition was me putting up a wall in order to be completely invulnerable, but I'm so glad I decided that was foolish because I made so many friends considering I didn't know anyone here.
Micro: Your frenemy relationship with Wren ultimately came to a head when you lipsynced against one another in the ball challenge. What caused you two to get off on the wrong foot, and where do you stand now?
Summer: I don't know what caused us to not like each other initially. I think that we both kinda rubbed each other the wrong way (I think I remember just hating her looks idk) and I'm really glad we resolved it up until the alliance. I'm over it now, but in the moment I thought it was sneaky and shady asf and as an honest person, I thought it was fair to tell Grean as she had been so kind and fair the entire competition.
Micro: You’ve proven yourself as a true lipsync assassin. What’s your performance background, and what did it mean for you to excel in the lipsyncs?
Summer: I have 0 performance background when it comes to dancing. I am a singer first and foremost, and I think I just really had a lot of passion for it and I just threw my heart and soul into it. I'm still injured though after that jumpsplit... incident against Alex!
Micro: Thank you Summer. I absolutely adored having you on this season. Next up, a queen who had us at “blelelelele”, Slerna Jimbles!
Micro: From the start of the competition, you stood out. Your alien style of drag set you apart. Has that always been your style? Where does the inspiration come from?
Slerna: Well, I only became a drag alien about 4 or 5 months ago. I'm so polished, I know! My inspiration comes from all the sick and twisted little voices in my head telling me to do vile and awful things to people I know and love. I choose not to listen to them, and instead channel them into my drag! I should introduce you to them sometime.
Micro: In the first Untucked, you and Wren really got into it with Blondie. Did you expect that fight to have the long lasting ripples that it did?
Slerna: No, I didn't like, at all. I was so so so shocked. Didn't think she would be so silly like that and I was such a little antagonizer, silly me! If I could change anything about the way that fight went I probably wouldn't cause that sounds like too much work.
Micro: After Snatch Game, it seemed like you were a little checked out. Besides the beeping, what was the final straw?
Slerna: The final straw was the one from my little piggy piggy oink house! No but for real, it was my house! I was so paranoid about forgetting to lock my door that it got to me and messed up my gameplay. But at least I got the chance to make sure I locked it! I did, by the way, and somehow I didn't have the keys to get in either. Good thing I came back.
Micro: When it came time for the returning challenge, was there any hesitation with coming back? Or did you know you wanted the chance?
Slerna: Yeah, I didn't think it'd be fair to the other girls to have a queen like me get a second chance, just cause i'm so beautiful or whatever. Also I was scared I left the toaster on too and didn't want to be back for so long that it bothered me again...
Micro: When you returned, you won back to back challenges. What was it like to not only avoid the revolving door pattern with returning queens, but to dominate after your return?
Slerna: Did you expect any less? I was kind of guaranteed to slay in my return with the way you're so obsessed. But it was pretty cool I guess.
Micro: When Wren started the alliance to get Grean out, you were the first person to let Grean know what happened. What prompted you to make sure she knew that these talks were happening?
Slerna: Grean was like my friend or whatever, and I wanted to stir things up so I decided to tell her. Wasn't based at all on my relationship with her tbh though, just my desire to be in the middle of drama and hate. Gotta love it.
Micro: You seemed to be against the idea of sabotaging Grean, and it looked to us like your relationship with Wren took a little hit because of it, where do you stand with Wren now?
Slerna: Who? Oh, wait, Wren. My bad. I haven't spoken with her since the incident, mainly because I lost her number on the trip back home, must've fell out my pocket.
Micro: During the final five, the challenge seemed like a perfect match for you. But you ultimately chose to leave the competition prior to the challenge. What happened? And how do you think you would’ve done in those final challenges?
Slerna: So, I knew as soon as I got back to Frynaland, I had my finals week. I was super stressed, and let's be real, who studies in advance for those things?? Not me. So I had to go home and spend a bunch of time studying. Really unfortunate timing. I think I would've been in the bottom half of the roast, they aren't really my strong suits despite how silly I am... I can't be deliberately mean when I supposed to be, only when it's inappropriate. As for the remix, I think I would've won. It's just kinda what I do. Verses always have and always will be my strong suit I think.
Micro: Slerna, you are truly one of a kind. Next up, the queen who made it to the final four with a heart of gold, killer wardrobe, and zero wins, Bellaron!
Bellaron: Okay, ouch! How are you, Micro?
Micro: Better now that I’m speaking with you. Coming into the season, you were closely tied to the Fandom drag scene. Can you give us a little backstory on what that’s like, and how it formed relationships this season?
Bellaron: I definitely think it helped, I mean I knew Blu, Blondie and Nicole. So it was so nice having them there just to fall back on, and it definitely helped me feel comfortable. The Fandom drag scene is full of so many icons, a few of which MDR has had the lucky chance to experience... and yes I'm talking about myself.
Micro: At the end of your time on the season, you had gotten the nickname of “Jonberella Blonde”. What was going through your mind when you couldn’t snatch a win? Is there a challenge you felt should’ve gone to you?
Bellaron: I think there was two challenges I thought I should've won for sure... I felt that I absolutely KILLED the radio challenge, if you'll pardon the pun, but I mean MURDA FM?? I stand by it fully. And honestly, as much as I love you Grean, I definitely thought that I could've won the Seven Wonders design challenge, but that's just me.
Micro: What would you say is the biggest misconception about you as a drag artist?
Bellaron: Being a part of the House of Camillaron, there is so much expectations of me as an artist, and I feel like people often feel like I don't live up to her, and that I'm not on her level. I think this is a common problem honestly with many drag families, and I love her but why the fuck would I want to be Camillaron? I ain't tryna be on her level, I am on my own level. No one can compare to me, and I can't compare to them! I guess also people think I'm a bitch but truly I'm nice... well.
Micro: Throughout the season, you grew close with Wren. When the cast started turning against her during the Greantee alliance moment, how were you feeling? Was it hard to balance supporting your new friend while also trying to stay out of the drama?
Bellaron: I mean you put it perfectly, I was trying to stay out of that drama. I am very close with Wren and I've loved the friendship we've developed, but girl... that was something! I mean it didn't go anywhere, but I wasn't looking necessarily to have an anti-someone alliance, we save that for All Stars. And also, I needed to focus on myself. So like I have Wren's back, which you've seen with other... (looks at Blondie) situations, but I also wasn't trying to be a bitch, because I'm Fandom's Sweetheart!
Micro: I can always count on you three for a fun time. Head on backstage, we’ll see you soon with the rest of the cast!
Micro: Finally, these three queens beat out the best of the best, and made it to the very end. Please give it up for Greantee, Wren Wyvern, and Zodya Killer!

Micro: Welcome gorgeous finalists! Now, I’ll be sitting down with each of you during the grand finale for a more in depth interview on the events of the season. But while I have you here, I want to discuss some moments from the competition. Greantee, let’s start with you!
Greantee: Hi hi hi!
Micro: Earlier tonight, I talked with some of the queens about the debate between designing your own looks, versus getting them from others. As someone who made all of their looks for the season, where do you stand on this now?
Greantee: I feel like in this competition, I've never felt like there was an inherent advantage to using other people's looks or making your own looks. If you use other people's looks, you're kind of creatively limited by what other people have done and don't really get a chance to use your own ideas, and if you make your own looks, you're limited by your own ability and those two-day deadlines. That being said, I think everyone who does drag, and moreso in this case the fake online drag we do in this competition, should at least look into making their own looks whether it be by learning how to d raw or editing photos. When you make your own stuff, then it's 100% a reflection of yourself and your drag character and nothing can take that away from you.
Micro: Wren, do you have any thoughts on that?
Wren: My opinions on the topic of using other people’s artwork have changed. First of all, within this community there is a GIANORMOUS problem with not crediting other artists. I think it’s important that artists get the proper respect and recognition that they quite frankly deserve. I also think runways that people make themseleves should be acknowledged and critiqued as such, it can feel hopeless and defeating when you spend so much time on something only for the judges to fawn over smth that someone spent two minutes searching on the internet for. Especially with newer or less advanced artists (Im not saying Im one of those lol.) Ultimately I think the most important thing to do is credit who you get things from which not a single other person did, even once. On any future seasons, I am going to make all of my runways myself because I rly wanna improve and MDR is a great creative outlet and i was just crushed under the pressure in the middle of the season cuz I felt as though I had to use other people’s art to catch up
Micro: And Greantee, I have to ask you about “everybody but Grean”. When you found out that Wren had been conspiring against you, you had a mixed reaction, and it ultimately ended with you having a vulnerable moment. What was going through your mind when you learned about that situation?
Greantee: At first, I thought it was hilarious. I was very much flattered that someone would go such great lengths just to get rid of me, literally living in Wren's mind rent free. I was honestly not surprised either since I also did feel like it was kind of obvious how big of a threat I was, and I didn't really feel threatened either since it wasn't a very well-thought out plan and I knew no one else was gonna go through with it. The emotion came from the pressure to perform well building up little and little through out the season, and this very in-my-face message that "Greantee the girls are after YOU" was just the final straw on my stress camel's back. So I just had to let it all out. But it was actually very cathartic and good for me, it helped me focus and realize, I've done this well for a reason, this is what I'm good at, and I'm more ready than ever to prove exactly why "everybody but Grean" happened in the first place.
Wren: I mean, it was a bit of a moment though.
Greantee: Wren, I really don’t want to reopen old wounds, but it wasn’t all fun for me, and I’m gonna need you to respect that. Please.
Wren: Oop, alright, alright.
Micro: And where do the two of you stand now? Were you able to move past the drama?
Greantee: Oh yeah, absolutely, I don't hold it against her at all, I was never mad or upset with her. I was very very thankful for the storyline.
Micro: Thanks Greantee. I look forward to continuing this conversation at the grand finale.
Greantee: Can’t wait!
Micro: Wren Wyvern, nice to see you living as your authentic self tonight.
Wren: Micro, the tribe has spoken.
Micro: Of course, I have to ask you about your relationship with Blondie. From the start, the two of you did not get along. What do you think was the cause of this?
Wren: Because Blondie uses the excuse of hiding behind a persona to play the mean girl and it’s really not something I care for. Idc if you’re playing a character or not, you’re the one typing out those statements. Also she said transphobic shit so…
Micro: When things with Blondie got more and more chaotic, how were you feeling? Did you feel like things were going too far, or did you feel like it was a necessary conversation to be had?
Wren: Hmm, did it go too far? It’s gonna be a no for me!
Micro: You had a very strong friendship with Alex. When it came time for the makeover challenge, you put her with Blondie, someone you both feuded with all season. What was your reasoning behind that, and did it cause any problems between you and Alex?
Wren: I paired them together because they were arguing over like something or other, I don’t really remember, when it came time to pair times and me and Bellaron (who I was chatting and coming up w teams with) both thought it was really, really funny. I did NOT think it would send him home, and I didn’t think he would forget his words (aka not send a lipsync). But no, it did not affect our friendship. In fact, we’ve become wayyyy closer after filming ended. We constantly vc and play Roblox, gossip, do stupid shit, and fight bitchy poltergeists.
Micro: During the girl group challenge, you put together an alliance to try and get Greantee out of the competition. Take me back to the beginning. What prompted this, and how did you come up with the lipsync surprise idea?
Wren: At that point, I think Grean had won thirty challenges or so. There was no denying that she was not just a frontrunner, but THEE frontrunner. I’ve always had fun with thinking about strategic plans and how to spice up the game, so my mind was thinking about what we could do to slow Grean’s momentum. And once Alex went home, it showed that a frontrunner could be sent home if they messed up the lipsync. That’s where it all began, and then it devolved into pure and utter chaos.
Micro: When the other queens weren’t receptive to your plan, you found yourself isolated from the group. What was going through your head, and did part of you wish you could just undo it?
Wren: Oh yeah I guess I was isolated, wasn’t I. Bellaron and I were fine and the main thing was just I remember hoping Summer and I could work together for the challenge and that I think we did.
Micro: Zodya, it’s time darling.
Zodya: Ask away, I’m ready!
Micro: Though this season was full of drama, you never seemed to get caught up in it. Was that a conscious choice, or did it just work out that way?
Zodya: Can I be honest? I can't give a fuck about Discord drama. Like, I'm sorry, I'm too busy thriving and hustling IRL to bother with cussing out a little gay person on my laptop. That, and I'm by nature more of someone who prefers conflict resolution and letting people breathe and be in harmony than a god of chaos, so if anything it was just...destined for me to not be involved in most of the drama.
Micro: While you didn’t get directly involved in the drama, you always made your thoughts known in the confessionals. What was your view on confessionals, and what would you say to people who might say that you should’ve spoken your mind to the queens directly?
Zodya: To be honest? I mainly used my confessionals to just give my thoughts on an issue after the moment or just when I feel a little bit messy. If I could say something to some of the competitors, I think that it'll be I feel like a lot of the cast had a BAD case of the Dunning–Kruger effect, in the sense that I feel like some competitors either feel more entitled to certain placements or don't really think about what they could do better and seem satisfied just...doing the same thing. Definition of insanity, and all that. I feel if some of the competitors reflected more instead of projecting their insecurities out into the open, they would've performed better throughout the season.
Micro: From the start of the season, you and Wren had a close friendship. But in the last few weeks, there seemed to be a divide between the two of you. Mainly in regards to her involvement with the seven wonder assignments, her plan to take Greantee down, and choosing you as the person who should go home next. What were your thoughts on these events, and where do you stand with Wren now?
Zodya: Let me start of by saying this: Wren Wyvern is a pop icon. She's entertaining and batshit insane in all of the best ways. However, whenever I think about the Dunning-Kruger effect, they are probably my biggest example of it. Imagine plotting and scheming across the season and not only have it be exposed, but have it not even work for the most part. The Seven Wonders week, in all honesty, I didn't know she had any part in. It wasn't until I saw the episode where that came out, to which...to be honest, it's kind of pathetic? Like, choosing me, one of the only people that was consistently kind and uplifted you and your talent...now THAT'S a choice, alright! Her plan to take Greantee down, well, what could I say that hasn't already been said? Not only did it not work, it was...also just bad? Like the entire plan was fully contingent of Greantee flopping, which meant that...we have virtually zero agency. If this was like the real Drag Race and we could, I don't know, steal Greantee's shit, that would be one thing. But having a plan that's in place that's fully reliant on a competitor who has NEVER faulted going on to fault? Mess, mama. Personally, I'm still cool with Wren. Disappointed by her actions because, to be honest, if she spent her time used scheming to work on their stuff more, maybe they'd have more to show than two wins and a boatload of red placements!
Micro: Thank you queens. Don’t go anywhere, we’ll be right back with the full cast coming together. Trust me, you don’t want to miss this.
