To make a long story very short I’m a music producer and have a few songs with an artist. The artist switched distributors from distrokid to a more “official” distributor sometime last year and I just stopped getting paid for several months. Eventually I get an email from the new distributor saying I have a royalty statement. The royalty statements don’t cover the several months of missed payments they just start back up as if the switch happened last month. So I’m still missing a bunch of payments.
Then the artist’s business manager reaches out to me, says they owe me what would amount to approximately what I’d expect in 1 month of earnings but says it’s for basically the entire several month span of payments I never got. He includes a royalty statement that’s very barebones. Just lists the songs and how much money I’m owed for each. Not the normal detailed reports I got from distrokid or even get from the new distributor on my newer royalty statements.
I explain that the number he’s quoting me is about like 20% of what makes sense referencing the detailed reports I have from before and after the period of missing statements. He comes back the next day saying he made a mistake and gives a new quote, which is still only about 75% of what I’d expect if I was really pessimistic and assumed the music was generating the exact same amount of money last payment period as it was several months ago (in reality they were generating more bc they were getting more plays). In reality I wouldnt be surprised if it’s only 60% of what I’m actually owed.
But whatever I was just going to ask him for the detailed reports and take it from there. What’s really bothering me is he is asking to wire me the money and essentially is asking for my bank account and wire routing number over email? Is this standard? I’ve worked with several PROs, labels, and distributors and it’s always been through direct deposit. I’ve never been paid through a wire and it’s not that I think this guy is trying to steal my bank info, or that he isn’t who he says he is, it’s just that I don’t feel comfortable sending information that could financially ruin me if it’s in the wrong hands over plain text gmail. Like what if his email account is hacked and he doesn’t delete the email immediately? That sort of thing.
Would it be unprofessional if I asked for a different payment method?
The whole thing is strange to me. The fact they could owe me “x” one day and then the next realize they owe me “y”, where y is still smaller than last month’s payment times the amount of missing months and the song has been shrinking in popularity not growing, makes me feel like this second number is as equally as arbitrary as the first one and they have no idea how much they owe me. And the fact their business manager is trying to wire me money instead of me just getting paid by the distributor makes me feel like they probably fucked something up along the way and are hoping they can just cover it up essentially?

1/2 - I buy a non-refundable international ticket so that I can go meet my gf for the first time. (I was in a Shia Labeouf JUST DO IT mood) My travel date is 4/2. From here is it a whole nother story and familial issues but thats not really important.
1/21 - I go to check my passport because of said familial issues and come to find out that it had expired in October and I had to apply for a new one. Panic panic panic, but I try to figure out how to get a new one. I wasnt sure how and the post office doesnt EVER pick up their phone, so I decided that I must go down there myself so I could figure out the process from an actual human being, as opposed to general advice from the internet.
2/1 - I hop on my bike and arrive at the post office finally. (I had spent the time since 1/21 trying to figure out a good time to go, gathering the necessary info, and procrastinating cause…… familial issues). I come prepared with a filled out, but super faded application that I printed at home and asked how to get a passport. I was given advice on how to fill it out correctly, but they couldnt give me an appointment right that second. At the time, I thought damn, but after hearing about what happened with early Feb apps on this sub, I’m glad XD. So I got an appointment for 2/21, as that was the earliest he could fit me in. From here i gathered stuff that I needed, money order, photos, birth certificate, social security card, etc. I later came to find out that my birth certificate was actually a certificate of live birth and issued 4 years after my birth and I had no time to get the original since I live in a different state from my birth one. Panic panic panic.
2/21 - I have my appointment for a First Time passport. Expedited Processing with 1-2 Day Shipping. I try to ask as many questions as possible in order for the appointment to go as smoothly as possible. I give them my expired passport, learners permit, social security card, and my old employee id, but the lady who did the application turned away the last 2 saying they wouldnt be necessary (Social security is already ok the form). She did however say that due to my learners permit, I should be expecting something to sign later in the mail. I stupidly said okay without enquiring further. I go back home and ask on Reddit what she meant by that and receiver a grand total of 1 RESPONSE which told me that my application would be super delayed due to the mistake of the post office lady. Panic panic panic, and I get no more responses after that.
2/22 - I go back to the post office to try to ask again what the fuck was up, but the specificate lady who did my passport wasnt there and the manager didnt have very much information to give me. She said to just wait for the letter. (That letter never came btw) From this day I spend literally ALL of my time stressing and worrying causing my gf to also stress and worry. As the day of the trip draws nearer and nearer, I begin to contemplate either moving the date or cancelling the trip altogether, due to several external factors on both of our ends.
2/24 - My application is received. Im not sure when the check was cashed, but thats also done I guess.
2/27 - I check the website and see the above information for the first time, having waited only less than a week. In Process at Locator 35. When I first went to the post office, it was 3-5 weeks, but in the status it said 5-7 and at best, I could only wait 5 due to the travel date, so panic panic panic.
3/3 - Its almost night time when I get an email about a letter from USPS. My grandmother had it with her, so I decide to get on my bike, het on a bus and go to her. I receive feeling so happy and thinking that it was what the post office lady had mentioned before. Nope. It was just a letter seeking confirmation that I did indeed sign up for Informed Delivery with USPS. (Something that they couldve probably told my ass BY EMAIL so I aint have to get up and waste money on a bus ☠️☠️. On the bright side, that was the first day I ever used the bus on my own and I was so scared because i didnt know how to. Now I know :D) I decide to wait until certain dates until I consider moving the flight date or cancelling.
3/14 - 3 week mark. I try to call the NPIC at 7:58, but went through the menu too quickly, so I got in at 7:59! and couldnt get anybody. I try again a minute later and fail to reach anyone.
3/15 - I wasn’t really planning on calling here but it was around 9:15 pm and at a spur of the moment, I decided to go hard and try again. I was left waiting for just 30 minutes and I thought wow I must be very lucky, since everyone else here seems to have waited hours and hours if they didnt call at 8am. I try to ask about a status and the possibility of an appointment at a passport agency, but B said he couldnt provide that info at that time and to wait until the 2 week mark.
3/17 - I dont remember what time exactly, but I try to call again and this time I only had to wait about 5 minutes. I get the same information, this time from L. I ask about the possibility of my application being denied. (I didnt say precisely why, in fear of slowing down my application, but learners permit and the letter). L asks if my app is in process and since I said yes, he says then from here there should be no problem. I’m a little relieved, but I read up online that your application can still be denied while in process, so I continue to not trust these people and what they say. I ask about an status update and an appointment. L tells me to call back within the 2 week mark and unfortunately for me, that means Monday. Which means I lose a day of valuable time. :(
3/20 - I now have 13 days left until my trip and I decide that I’ma get me my appointment and hopefully at the one closest to me. (I know that thats hopeless after reading this sub, seeing as everyone had to hop on a flight to reach their appointments, but I was adamant.) I call and can only get BEEP BEEP BEEP. I am however determined to get my appointment, so I hang up and redial. I say to myself that if no one pucks up by call number 30, I’ll try again at a later time. I finally manage to get through at the 27th attempt XD. I wait once again 2 or 5 minutes. R picks up and asks me some questions, but I guess I didnt answer the questions right. As a result, he transfers me over to S. S tells me she cant give me a status update, but she will see if I can get an appointment at my nearest passport agency. I wait a bit. When she gets back in the line, she tells me that I dont actually need an appointment, because my passport is printing and that tomorrow, my status will change to shipping. I am ECSTATIC, but still not 100% trusting of what these people say. (Also, this tells me that if you give them your locator number, they can indeed see what your status is) I check back on the website and see that my status has changed to approved! Nevertheless, I wait impatiently for my passport still 💀.
3/21 - 4 week mark with 12 days left. I try to reach out to my congresswoman, but dont wait very long for her to respond. I know that I should leave the passport people alone, but I still decide to call anyways. Once more at a random time thinking that I might have to wait a really long time this time, but NOPE. I wait again for only 2 or 5 minutes and J picks up the phone. Now I can hear from the toen of voice that J is black. I am black too, so I feel a much deeper sense of comfort than with the other reps, but thats just me. I ask for a status update and an appointment. J asks if I checked the website and I lie say that it still says in process for me, so that I can hear what it says on his end. I wait a bit and when J picks up the phone again, he tells me good news. My passport is boeing prepared for delivery and he sends me the tracking number by e-mail. I am ECSTATIC. When I check the website, it still says Approved. Something from the congresswoman’s office responds to my e-mail, but since I already have a tracking number, I decide to not process further unless if my passport comes later than expected. I sign up for eeeeeeeeeverything that USPS tells me to, so that I can know for sure when my passport gets here. I’m given an estimated time of 6pm on 3/22.
3/22 - BIG DAY!! I get some notifications throughout the day and at 3:11, I see the USPS truck pull up and run so quickly to the mailbox. IT IS FINALLY HERE AND MY AND MY GF’S ANXIETY IS QUELLED!!! I had checked some posts here earlier and my passport group on average seems to be getting there passports within 30-31 days from application. I get mine at day 29. :) (Also, the website still says approved, but adds a little blurb about how I should expert my passport on or around 3/23. haha)
3/23 - I make this post and I am planning to watch that mf like a HAWK, because I have 10 days until my trip and I dont want anything more to go wrong.
All in all, I stressed A LOT due to poor planning and time management. And the closer the date got, the more stressed my gf also got. Im glad I caught my error when I did, but I wish I had either grotten my appointment sooner or bought a ticket at a later date. The next time I apply for a passport, I am most certainly going to do it well in advance and not buy any tickets without a passport in hand. I also learned the value of spending a little extra for better, cause theres no way I would’ve made it with routine service alone. I am a person who always tries to find the cheapest option possible, but the money just leeps on disappearing with this trip 💀. I’m glad for the learning experiences (the bus, the finances, learning to be a little more independent from my family, etc), but would never want to go through this shit again. And judging by the timeline and despite my application mistake, I still got it within 5 weeks with a week and a half to spare for my travel date. This makes me one of the lucky ones and I am amazingly grateful that I am. Thank you for reading my long winded timeline. :)
Edit: I technically didnt have to e-mail my congresswoman. Her office reached out but had nothing more than my name and address and was to fill out a privacy release form after I got my tracking number. So she is not the reason I got it so “early” haha

At the time, I thought damn, but after hearing about what happened with early Feb apps on this sub, I’m glad XD. So I got an appointment for 2/21, as that was the earliest he could fit me in. From here i gathered stuff that I needed, money order, photos, birth certificate, social security card, etc. I later came to find out that my birth certificate was actually a certificate of live birth and issued 4 years after my birth and I had no time to get the original since I live in a different state from my birth one. Panic panic panic.
2/21 - I have my appointment for a First Time passport. Expedited Processing with 1-2 Day Shipping. I try to ask as many questions as possible in order for the appointment to go as smoothly as possible. I give them my expired passport, learners permit, social security card, and my old employee id, but the lady who did the application turned away the last 2 saying they wouldnt be necessary (Social security is already ok the form). She did however say that due to my learners permit, I should be expecting something to sign later in the mail. I stupidly said okay without enquiring further. I go back home and ask on Reddit what she meant by that and receiver a grand total of 1 RESPONSE which told me that my application would be super delayed due to the mistake of the post office lady. Panic panic panic, and I get no more responses after that.
2/22 - I go back to the post office to try to ask again what the fuck was up, but the specificate lady who did my passport wasnt there and the manager didnt have very much information to give me. She said to just wait for the letter. (That letter never came btw) From this day I spend literally ALL of my time stressing and worrying causing my gf to also stress and worry. As the day of the trip draws nearer and nearer, I begin to contemplate either moving the date or cancelling the trip altogether, due to several external factors on both of our ends.
2/24 - My application is received. Im not sure when the check was cashed, but thats also done I guess.
2/27 - I check the website and see the above information for the first time, having waited only less than a week. In Process at Locator 35. When I first went to the post office, it was 3-5 weeks, but in the status it said 5-7 and at best, I could only wait 5 due to the travel date, so panic panic panic.
3/3 - Its almost night time when I get an email about a letter from USPS. My grandmother had it with her, so I decide to get on my bike, het on a bus and go to her. I receive feeling so happy and thinking that it was what the post office lady had mentioned before. Nope. It was just a letter seeking confirmation that I did indeed sign up for Informed Delivery with USPS. (Something that they couldve probably told my ass BY EMAIL so I aint have to get up and waste money on a bus ☠️☠️. On the bright side, that was the first day I ever used the bus on my own and I was so scared because i didnt know how to. Now I know :D) I decide to wait until certain dates until I consider moving the flight date or cancelling.
3/14 - 3 week mark. I try to call the NPIC at 7:58, but went through the menu too quickly, so I got in at 7:59! and couldnt get anybody. I try again a minute later and fail to reach anyone.
3/15 - I wasn’t really planning on calling here but it was around 9:15 pm and at a spur of the moment, I decided to go hard and try again. I was left waiting for just 30 minutes and I thought wow I must be very lucky, since everyone else here seems to have waited hours and hours if they didnt call at 8am. I try to ask about a status and the possibility of an appointment at a passport agency, but B said he couldnt provide that info at that time and to wait until the 2 week mark.
3/17 - I dont remember what time exactly, but I try to call again and this time I only had to wait about 5 minutes. I get the same information, this time from L. I ask about the possibility of my application being denied. (I didnt say precisely why, in fear of slowing down my application, but learners permit and the letter). L asks if my app is in process and since I said yes, he says then from here there should be no problem. I’m a little relieved, but I read up online that your application can still be denied while in process, so I continue to not trust these people and what they say. I ask about an status update and an appointment. L tells me to call back within the 2 week mark and unfortunately for me, that means Monday. Which means I lose a day of valuable time. :(
3/20 - I now have 13 days left until my trip and I decide that I’ma get me my appointment and hopefully at the one closest to me. (I know that thats hopeless after reading this sub, seeing as everyone had to hop on a flight to reach their appointments, but I was adamant.) I call and can only get BEEP BEEP BEEP. I am however determined to get my appointment, so I hang up and redial. I say to myself that if no one pucks up by call number 30, I’ll try again at a later time. I finally manage to get through at the 27th attempt XD. I wait once again 2 or 5 minutes. R picks up and asks me some questions, but I guess I didnt answer the questions right. As a result, he transfers me over to S. S tells me she cant give me a status update, but she will see if I can get an appointment at my nearest passport agency. I wait a bit. When she gets back in the line, she tells me that I dont actually need an appointment, because my passport is printing and that tomorrow, my status will change to shipping. I am ECSTATIC, but still not 100% trusting of what these people say. (Also, this tells me that if you give them your locator number, they can indeed see what your status is) I check back on the website and see that my status has changed to approved! Nevertheless, I wait impatiently for my passport still 💀.
3/21 - 4 week mark with 12 days left. I try to reach out to my congresswoman, but dont wait very long for her to respond. I know that I should leave the passport people alone, but I still decide to call anyways. Once more at a random time thinking that I might have to wait a really long time this time, but NOPE. I wait again for only 2 or 5 minutes and J picks up the phone. Now I can hear from the toen of voice that J is black. I am black too, so I feel a much deeper sense of comfort than with the other reps, but thats just me. I ask for a status update and an appointment. J asks if I checked the website and I lie say that it still says in process for me, so that I can hear what it says on his end. I wait a bit and when J picks up the phone again, he tells me good news. My passport is boeing prepared for delivery and he sends me the tracking number by e-mail. I am ECSTATIC. When I check the website, it still says Approved. Something from the congresswoman’s office responds to my e-mail, but since I already have a tracking number, I decide to not process further unless if my passport comes later than expected. I sign up for eeeeeeeeeverything that USPS tells me to, so that I can know for sure when my passport gets here. I’m given an estimated time of 6pm on 3/22.
3/22 - BIG DAY!! I get some notifications throughout the day and at 3:11, I see the USPS truck pull up and run so quickly to the mailbox. IT IS FINALLY HERE AND MY AND MY GF’S ANXIETY IS QUELLED!!! I had checked some posts here earlier and my passport group on average seems to be getting there passports within 30-31 days from application. I get mine at day 29. :) (Also, the website still says approved, but adds a little blurb about how I should expert my passport on or around 3/23. haha)
3/23 - I make this post and I am planning to watch that mf like a HAWK, because I have 10 days until my trip and I dont want anything more to go wrong.
All in all, I stressed A LOT due to poor planning and time management. And the closer the date got, the more stressed my gf also got. Im glad I caught my error when I did, but I wish I had either grotten my appointment sooner or bought a ticket at a later date. The next time I apply for a passport, I am most certainly going to do it well in advance and not buy any tickets without a passport in hand. I also learned the value of spending a little extra for better, cause theres no way I would’ve made it with routine service alone. I am a person who always tries to find the cheapest option possible, but the money just leeps on disappearing with this trip 💀. I’m glad for the learning experiences (the bus, the finances, learning to be a little more independent from my family, etc), but would never want to go through this shit again. And judging by the timeline and despite my application mistake, I still got it within 5 weeks with a week and a half to spare for my travel date. This makes me one of the lucky ones and I am amazingly grateful that I am. Thank you for reading my long winded timeline. :)
Edit: I technically didnt have to e-mail my congresswoman. Her office reached out but had nothing more than my name and address and was to fill out a privacy release form after I got my tracking number. So she is not the reason I got it so “early” haha

I have a HTD DMA 1275 amp that hums from channels 1/2 and 11/12 the loudest and then extremely faintly on the other channels.
Upon taking it apart I discovered that there are 6 separately powered ice power psu/amp combos and the ones that hum the loudest (1/2,11/12) are the farthest from the output.
I decided to swap 2 of them around to see if the hum followed the amp or the wiring and it followed the wiring.
I attempted to disconnect certain wires, input, sound etc and see if anything changed. It would either not flip the protective relay on or have no effect. I then used some contact cleaner on all of the volume controls to no avail.
I have been using this amp with and without a pure sinewave UPS and with and without a grounding isolator. The hum that I am getting sounds similar to a ground loop issue, but I can’t be certain. It does not change with the volume level set on the amp and it happens with a number of different speakewire combinations.
I attempted to move some of the physical wiring inside of the amp while it was powered and humming to see if I noticed any fluctuations in the sound and none occurred. It seems like some component may be bad or the routing of the wires is not optimal? Any suggestions on debugging this would be greatly appreciated. I just picked up a fancy new DMM to help troubleshoot this and use for other projects.

I am in the middle of a dispute with Chime right now and I’m really starting to lose hope. I’ve banked with them since 2018 with zero issues so I’m a little bit at a loss for words on this one.
On February 10th, my phone was stolen while shopping. I reported it stolen and changed all my passwords. While I was frustrated, I moved on. Later on February 28th, in the early hours of the morning the thief was somehow able to hack into my device through my apple ID (even though it was in lost mode). At that point they had access to my entire device. They were able to access my Chime account and fraudulently initiated a bank transfer for $5,000 using the “pay anyone feature”. I have never used my Chime account to transfer money using that feature before, and have never once spent $5k in one transaction in my 5 years with the bank. This is completely out of my normal spending pattern and should never have been allowed to go through, it should have been flagged as a suspicious transaction in the first place. A few minutes later, they also attempted to cash app themselves $2,500 from my cashapp, but that thankfully failed. So cash app was able to correctly identify that it was a fraudulent transaction and not let it go through but Chime was not. A few minutes after the transfer, the hacker also changed my address, username, and preferred name in my account to information that was not my own. I noticed right away because I got a text alert that my address had been changed. I accessed my account and saw the fraudulent transaction and then called chime around 9am that day. I was on hold for almost 2 hours and transferred around from agent to agent all while the hacker has access to my account. I am honestly fortunate in that time period they did not drain the entire account. The agents insisted they could not freeze my account and could not help me internally, the best I could do is lock my card from the app, even though the hacker had access to my account themselves. I was able to change my email and password again and they were seemingly no longer able to access the account anymore.
Later that day, several more fraudulent transactions were attempted but have failed since my card is locked, all of which I have uploaded to chime as proof for part of my dispute process. These attempted charges took place on Amazon, and the hacker attempted the purchase hacking equipment and have it shipped to an Amazon package hub for pick up.
That morning as soon as I got off the phone with support, I immediately went to the police department and filed a report. I had to change all my password and freeze my credit as the police have told me they are investigating this as identity fraud as well. So both my stolen phone and fraudulent transactions have been reported and documented with law enforcement. All this documentation was provided to Chime with the police report number, the 5 page police report document, and the police have even now issued subpoenas to chime for information about the account the money was sent to. At the time, Chime told me I am not eligible for a temporary credit for 10 days and the dispute may take 45 days.
The same day I opened the dispute and the fraud occurred, the dispute was closed not even 4 hours later saying “no error had occurred.” There is no way a proper investigation considering all my documentation was performed during that timeframe. I immediately appealed the decision and opened another rebuttal dispute the same day 2/28, and on 3/14 chime again closed my dispute saying “no error has occurred”. This is despite an active police investigation with corroborating evidence from multiple witnesses and documentation from the police, apple, and my phone carrier. There is no way they are actually investigating this and maintaining no error has occurred. Support has been completely unhelpful the entire time, even the supervisors, and are clearly not protecting their members in any way shape or form. They are making an already stressful situation so much worse.
I opened a second rebuttal on 3/14 which was closed again with “no error found” today. They informed me the reason they believe no error took place is because 1) I had received a direct deposit that day (from payroll like I get every two weeks for the last few years 2) that the IP address and device was familiar (of course it was, my phone was stolen and they were able to hack into it and access my accounts from my own device) and 3) the transaction took place in Maryland, where I am from (of course it did, my phone was stolen in Maryland). 4) there were no failed log in attempts (yes, because they had gained access to my passwords because they had my device). 5) there was no change in the “spending velocity of my account” (which is a complete lie because I have never once used the pay anyone feature or spent $5k in a single transaction. The day the transaction occurred I transferred the rest of my money out and haven’t touched the account since. In the documentation they sent stating why it was denied they’re basically accusing ME of fraud at this point, which is mind blowing.
I opened an third rebuttal today but am not feeling hopeful as they have the same information they’ve had this whole time, I’ve submitted over 30 documents to back up my dispute claims and they don’t seem to care. I have reported them to the BBB and CFPB so hopefully that gets me somewhere eventually. I am also likely going to sue them in small claims court at this point for the $5k. As soon as this dispute is resolved I will be closing my account as I have transferred the rest of my who actually protects their members.

I had to change all my password and freeze my credit as the police have told me they are investigating this as identity fraud as well. So both my stolen phone and fraudulent transactions have been reported and documented with law enforcement. All this documentation was provided to Chime with the police report number, the 5 page police report document, and the police have even now issued subpoenas to chime for information about the account the money was sent to. At the time, Chime told me I am not eligible for a temporary credit for 10 days and the dispute may take 45 days.
The same day I opened the dispute and the fraud occurred, the dispute was closed not even 4 hours later saying “no error had occurred.” There is no way a proper investigation considering all my documentation was performed during that timeframe. I immediately appealed the decision and opened another rebuttal dispute the same day 2/28, and on 3/14 chime again closed my dispute saying “no error has occurred”. This is despite an active police investigation with corroborating evidence from multiple witnesses and documentation from the police, apple, and my phone carrier. There is no way they are actually investigating this and maintaining no error has occurred. Support has been completely unhelpful the entire time, even the supervisors, and are clearly not protecting their members in any way shape or form. They are making an already stressful situation so much worse.
I opened a second rebuttal on 3/14 which was closed again with “no error found” today. They informed me the reason they believe no error took place is because 1) I had received a direct deposit that day (from payroll like I get every two weeks for the last few years 2) that the IP address and device was familiar (of course it was, my phone was stolen and they were able to hack into it and access my accounts from my own device) and 3) the transaction took place in Maryland, where I am from (of course it did, my phone was stolen in Maryland). 4) there were no failed log in attempts (yes, because they had gained access to my passwords because they had my device). 5) there was no change in the “spending velocity of my account” (which is a complete lie because I have never once used the pay anyone feature or spent $5k in a single transaction. The day the transaction occurred I transferred the rest of my money out and haven’t touched the account since. In the documentation they sent stating why it was denied they’re basically accusing ME of fraud at this point, which is mind blowing.
I opened an third rebuttal today but am not feeling hopeful as they have the same information they’ve had this whole time, I’ve submitted over 30 documents to back up my dispute claims and they don’t seem to care. I have reported them to the BBB and CFPB so hopefully that gets me somewhere eventually. I am also likely going to sue them in small claims court at this point for the $5k. As soon as this dispute is resolved I will be closing my account as I have transferred the rest of my who actually protects their members.
Does anyone else have any dispute experience with Chime? Or can point me in the right direction of anything else I could possibly do to help this situation?

There are no precedents in the country for a serviceman to change citizenship. And there is no mechanism how to break this contract or renegotiate it. To set off the time that I have already served, you need to go to court. And now I have been suffering with a leg injury for two months - I go to hospitals. And in principle, being in the east, I have no time to do this. Therefore, I simply continue to serve on a contract for foreigners. I really wanted to get into the 93rd brigade, but they didn’t give me an attitude - and I ended up in the 24th as the senior shooter of a motorized infantry company. We were standing in the Lugansk region in a not very noisy place, where all the venality of the highest ranks and all the agreements became immediately visible. I booked a reservation at Sheraton Tel Aviv for one night (arriving Friday, checking out Sat). I booked well in advance, under my name, and with my Bonvoy number. I arrived just after midnight on Friday and checked in. The front desk took a minute to find my reservation and the very polite front desk person said, "oh I think it was canceled because you had not shown up by midnight. No problem, I can fix this right now". I mentioned that I was just looking forward to a hot shower and a little rest, as I was departing very early. Great room, excellent amenities. Check out at 7am for an international flight.
Get home. My stay doesn't post to my account. No problem, I'll report missing stay. Wait 10 days. Request a copy of my bill. Bill codes my stay as "Guaranteed No Show" for Friday. It shows me checking in on Sat and out on Sat. The cost of the room is the same rate, $400USD. The bill has a new confirmation number (not the original reservation confirmation number), my name and Bonvoy number.
Customer service replies to my Missing Credit Request saying that they found that the charges on this receipt are from a "No Show Stay" and are not eligible to receive point or elite night credit.
Program rules say that to be eligible for credit your room needs to be booked in the name as it appears on your Marriott Bonvoy account, you must personally check-in and occupy the room, and the hotel must be paid directly for the stay upon check-out.
I did personally check in, occupy the room, booked under my name and Bonvoy number, and paid at check out. What is going on here? Do I really get coded as a "Guaranteed No Show" for arriving after midnight and not calling ahead? Does every property do this? What do you all recommend I do to get the credit?
Also just to vent: I paid a very hefty price tag to spend 6 hrs in room. I could have spent half and went to non marriott property. I was fine with the choice when I was treated well by the hotel and had a great experience, but this really sours things for me. I have already spent time tracking down the info and reporting the missing stay. The customer service line is terrible. I don't want to go down that route unless I can actually get a positive resolution (night credit and points).

- Phone plan: I have a dual-sim compatible phone so I plan on keeping my US phone number (mainly for 2FA) and adding an e-sim for a local plan. Does anyone have experience with using Mint (international roaming) for the occasional 2FA text? Do you recommend any alternatives? Are e-sims widely used in the EU?
- Banking + VPN: I will want to keep my retirement and checking account. Right now I only have one US credit card/one bank account, but want to start another as a backup. I’m planning on using my family address and am considering buying a router with VPN to keep at this location to use when logging into my accounts, as I’ve heard many US banks will not keep your account open if you are living overseas, is this correct? Are there banks/credit cards (and VPN) that you would recommend? I’ve also heard about using Wise or Revolut to transfer funds. Is this something to set up BEFORE or AFTER the move?
- License: As I will be moving over all of my banking addresses to my family address (different state), how essential is it that I obtain that state’s driver’s license before moving? I will have limited time before moving and may not have the proof of residency documents right away (tax document, credit card bill, etc.). If I keep my previous state license, will this cause any issues if my “true” US residence will be in a different state?

On 01/14/2023 - I Submitted my Passport Renewal Application online. Selected Expedited and 1-2 delivery. At that time, it indicated 3 to 5 weeks. I had international business travel for March 22, 2023.
On 01/17/2023 - that online status indicated “In Process”.
On 02/15/2023 I signed up for the USPS Informed Delivery. Just I case my new passport is shipped without any formal notification.
On 03/09/2023 – (14 days to my travel date) I called the #877 phone number and the moment I mentioned that I submitted online, I was transferred to the online team. I was on hold for 3 hours. When I finally got to speak with a person (they are a phone bank and not actual Passport Specialist) I was told that the status indicated “In Process” and nothing much they could do “Goodbye”. I tried calling back the #877 number several times, but they refused to answer any questions since I applied online. They just kept transferring me to the Online team. Endless loop.
On 3/10/2023 Morning - I contacted one of my state senators (I did my research concerning which state representative had the best record on helping its state residents with federal agencies). In my case for passport assistance. I provided the required information and documentation. They responded the same day (afternoon) by email that they contacted the Passport Agency in my state and no in- person appointments were available at the moment. And told me to try #877 to check if they had appointments in other states.
On 3/10/2023 Afternoon – I read a Post by “Sullim4” that he had determined a way to check the network traffic when the Passport Application number was clicked on. The response payload provides status that could be the most current. Mine was set to Fulfillment – Approved/Printing. This status is the most information I have gotten in more than 8 weeks. The information I have gathered that when a passport is in the Approved/Printing state, it can take from one day to 3 weeks to actually get it printed and shipped.
On 3/16/2023 Thursday late afternoon- I received an email from the senator office indicating that I have been granted an in-person appointment for the morning of 3/21/2023 in the city that I live.
On 3/20/2023 afternoon - I had everything ready for my in-person appointment on 3/21/2023. The DS-82 form and just in case the DS-11 form, passport picture(s), old passport, proof of payment when I submitted my online application.
On 3/20/2023 at 9pm I checked my Online Passport Application status and this time it had changed from “In Process” to “Printed.” And I could NO longer get the GetExisitingAvailActionsData status information. It is no longer in the response buffer.

Well, I had a decision to make fast. Go to the in-person appointment or cancel and trust that my new passport will be shipped from the DOS Tucson location. I decided to cancel my in-person appointment so that another person will be able to use it. Only way to cancel is to send email to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) with the Subject field set to “Cancel My Appointment”. And provide the needed information on the email to cancel. Confirmation number, Unique Identifier, Date, Time and Location. I sent an email at 4:00am.
On 3/22/2023 at 1:30pm my new passport was delivered to my home. Finally, got my new passport. Too late to make my international trip, my flight was at 3 pm. Which I had to re-schedule for next week.
On 3/22/2023 at 3:30pm I received an email from u/state.gov indicating that my passport was shipped. I checked my Online Passport Application status and now is set to “Shipped” and if you click on the Application Number, it provides the USPS tracking number.

- The Passport Application process started to have issues with delays about 3 years ago.
- The people that handle passports Applications are called “Passport Specialist” and in the last three years the number have gone from 1,457 to 1,237. They have not kept up with the demand for passports.
- During the Pandemic 2020 - 2021 there were about 2 million Passport applications in backlog.
- During July 2021 there was a rushed by U.S. citizens submitting Passport Applications which led to more delays and a minimum process time of 18 weeks (4.5 months). Many contacted their state representatives , many traveled to different cities for in-person appointments, most had selected expedited and 1-2 day delivery. (Sound familiar)
- On December 13, 2021 the current administration issued an executive order for the State Department to create an Online passport Application process.
- On February 2022 the initial pilot online Passport Application is opened federal employees and contractors.
- On 8/2/2022 the limited online Passport Application is opened to the general public for 25,000. It closes on 8/12/2022.
- It has opened three more times for limited service. The last one was in February 2023.
- On 3/09/2023 the current administration allocated $163 million to revamp the Passport Service.

I decided to go ahead and release the next chapter, it is longer than the others because it is the first scene of combat.
I want to thank you all for the encouragement, it was unexpected. There were two complains, one I will address here. I use the Memory Transcription the same way other pieces of written work use Memory Orbs, where you experience it through the eyes of one person but you distinctly know you are watching something in the past and are looking through the eyes of another person. 2nd Person feels like it fits or 3rd person plus internal monologue more so than pure 1st person to me. I apologize if I've gotten this wrong.
Still not 100% about not having an editor and proofreader look it over but it's for fun not for printing.
Now on with the story:
Memory Transcription: Corporal Thompson, United Nations ‘Black Watch’ Company #4
Date [standardized human time]: December 3, 2136
Thompson turned to Zim who was staring at the radio in astonishment. Thompson was barely twenty but she was a wiz with tech, her father had been an electrician and now she would rig just about anything to work with a 9 volt battery and some bubble gum. “He was telling us that he does not expect us to come back from this assignment and to account for ourselves well.”
Thompson got up from her chair and walked over to Zim, “Hey, I’m here with you, alright?”
Zim turned to her and Thompson could tell the color had drained from her face. She ushered the Tilfish over to a chair and pulled a mug from a nearby canteen kit. “Can Tilfish drink coffee?”
Zim blinked a few times, “I umm… what is coffee?”
Thompson pulled the cold pot from nearby and checked it with her palm, “It’s better hot but this is all we got.” She held up the black liquid. “It helps calm us down, it has a drug in it called caffeine, gives you energy and focuses your mind; at least in humans.” Thompson pulled out her guide book for Tilfish biology and started checking it.
“Let’s see, you can have it, at no more than 100ml per day and in slow sipping increments, can you handle that for me?” Zim nodded, still quaking as she tried to sit awkwardly in the human chair provided to her.
Thompson pulled the coffee to Zim, putting a dash of cream powder in it and sprinkling in a sugar packet. They had plenty but she wanted to slowly make it work. “It’s probably going to taste awful but I do need you to sip it okay? This is 100ml mug so this is every bit of it you can have in a single day, got it?”
Zim nodded and reached for the mug, taking a sip of the still bitter and cold liquid. Zim made a face of disgust and then groaned, “How do you drink this?”
“Carefully with years of practice,” Thompson pulled out a physical paper book and slid it over to Zim, “Can you read our language?”Zim blinked a few times, “Physical paper?”
Thompson smiled, “Makes it easier to destroy if we need to and also means if you can’t read it, you can’t run it through a translation program, you have to physically enter it into a computer to start the decoding process. Can you read our language?”
Zim nodded, “Yes, I learned while you were on the way here, it was required by our surrendering government for all officials to keep their position to learn it.” Thompson smiled at him and started to turn the book open.
“So you know what talking in code means?”
“You mean like the 65 million BC thing?”
“Yeah, we just refer to the Arxur as Bravo-Charlie, Bravor for B and Charlie for C, meaning BC. That way they can’t identify who or what we are talking about without knowing that.” Zim nodded as she opened the book and started to flip through it.
“You’ve got 2 hours to read through this,” Thompson gently reached and caressed the feeler of Zim to reassure her and then pulled the feeler up to the book at the start of it. “There are over 1100 code words in here, I need you to read it as fast as possible okay? Even reading it once might make it where you don’t have to look at the book. If you’re confused about something let me know. When your ready or the fighting begins I’m going to cut on the radio for your side of the room, you’ll start receiving transmissions okay? I know you Tilfish are good at multi-tasking, I’m going to get back on the radio over there.”Thompson pointed to it, “I’m going to turn it onto speakers instead of the head phones.” She reached down to the transmitter and put the microphone in front of Zim along with a pair of headphones on the desk, “I need you to watch how I operate it and listen to what I say and how I say it, then copy me. Our walkies get all sorts of interference from the orbital rounds and firefighting. It’s our job to cut through that static and make sure everyone has the message clear and concisely okay?”
She pointed to the cave entrance, “If anyone comes into there, once the fighting starts,” She reached under the desk and pulled out a pistol from under the desk. It was made for a human hand but Zim got the point when Thompson cocked the pistol, then placed it back into the holster under the desk. “Flip the desk towards the door for cover, pull this gun, and shoot to kill. At that point, our job is done and we hold the line.”She pulled something from under the chair, making the Tilfish jerk at her touch of a sensitive area on the lower thorax. “Relax,” She pulled a small joystick looking device out. It had an orange trigger and a red cap on the top of it along with an antenna sticking out of it.
“This is our detonator, if we’re going to die, pull this.” She pointed at the trigger on the front. “That will unlock the cap on top, flip it open.” Thompson flicked the cap with her thumb to show a red button underneath. “Then push this button, the explosives will go off. You won’t feel a thing and you’ll take a few of those bastards with you. Got it?”Zim took another sip of coffee, she could already feel the black liquid acting on her, making her more alert if somewhat jittery, “Yes, got it.”Thompson went back to her station and got onto the radio, broadcasts were coming through rapid fire and Thompson was replying to some while sending others to Captain Neil. The radios moved and squawked rapidly, between reading and listening, Zim could barely keep up with the coffee adding to her reaction time.
She had precious minutes to get this right and it was starting to dawn on her that she wasn’t going to live. She had to make sure the others that went deep into the mountain did. Every word was strange to her and she had to comprehend them quickly as she moved down the list onto the next page. Her feelers having some difficulty flipping the narrow pieces of paper but her exoskeleton prevented a papercut at least.

Memory Transcription: Lieutenant Honnie Schmidt, United Nations ‘Black Watch’ Company #4
Date [standardized human time]: December 3, 2136
Schmidt had ten individuals with her. One machine gun, five rifles, three submachine guns, and two shotguns. That plus the Tilfish Herci and Tia. Neil had insisted on separating the twins in case one died, the other wouldn’t freeze up. The soldiers moved with mechanical precision and made nearly no noise of their presence. It creeped the Tilfish out just how quiet the humans were despite the equipment they carried and their seemingly more cumbersome way of walking. The Tilfish on their native planet where making much more noise than the humans were, which Schmidt say their eyes pay particular attention to how they moved and shifted to avoid making noise.
They were nearly a kilometer from the caldera and had already seen Arxur ships flying overhead. They stuck to the trees and stayed low. The Tilfish were uncomfortable with how the humans had smeared mud, dirt, and tree sap onto their bodies and then done it to themselves. Hanover, Williams, Zephyr, Rhodes, Cleland, Swann, Tenet, Kelly, Yules, and Cambell all walked with Schmidt now, between them eleven soldiers and two Tilfish recruits.
They had armed the recruits with rifles that had been jammed in single shot mode in case the Tilfish panicked. They came upon a road, the road the civilians hours before had fled along. Tracks of vehicles, footprints of the thousands that had walked down it still embedded in the road. The Arxur would know which way to go to find them, that was for sure. Carefully examining it, Schimdt measured every variable she knew how.
The way the wind shifted, the scent of something and the sound of distant engines told her this was the best spot they were going to get. Her instincts of years of training and now battles told her this was their point.
“Zephyr.” She whispered and the sergeant came up to her. She turned her head and made some hand signals to setup the ambush before Zephyr nodded signaling back the confirmation. Jellio seemed confused and Schmidt turned to explain, as she pointed at Zephyr who was working her way down the squad taking every other member to follow her and then getting Tia to follow with her back the way they came.
“They’re going to go back 100 meters and cross the road then make their way down here and signal with a red flashlight when they are in position, we’ll make this our crossfire ambush.” She turned to Williams and motioned him forward as Zephyr took Rhodes, Cleland, Tenet, Yules, and Tia.
Williams moved up with the big heavy weapon, a rapid fire belt fed machine gun that must have weighed a good 20 kg with all the ammo he had to carry. “Yes Ma’am?”
“Setup at the end of the line, 20 meters behind us. I want them to have to punch through the whole crossfire to silence you gun, we ambush on your weapon firing, understood?” Williams nodded with his face full of mud and hustled back away from them.
“Hanover, get the claymores, rig them along the forest with trip wires, double time. Anything comes hunting us I want it to find out if there god is real or not.” Hanover nodded and went to each soldier, taking the mines. Zephyr would be doing the same on the other side.
Jellio looked confused for a moment, “What… what do we do now?”
Schmidt took out her flask and took a sip of coffee, “The worst part, we wait.”
Jellio was now even more confused as he whispered, “Waiting is the worst part? I thought the violence would be?”
Schimidt and everyone around her took a moment to chuckle or stifle a giggle. “No, waiting is. You hurry up and wait, and wait. You know it’s coming but you can do nothing except wait for it. Once it starts, our actions are mechanical, practiced, rehearsed almost but leading up that, it’s waiting; painful, terrifying, and crippling.”
A red light signaled towards Schmidt’s position and she signaled back with her own. Seconds turned to minutes, Hanover returned to her position, Schmidt’s troopers spread out in units of 2, with Jellio being her second.
The radio chipped but nothing on it. It was Cleland their designated marksman with a medium range engagement rifle. Schimidt reached up and chipped her radio back twice. Jellio tensed and Schmidt motioned him down, laying her belly on the ground at a nearby rise over the road. She put a finger up to her lips and Jellio seemed to get the hint with a nod. Coming into view on the road were a dozen Arxur, hooting and hollering, lacking any form of stealth.
Good, they can’t smell us and they haven’t seen us. The mud would cover our heat signatures and the earth and trees would be all they would smell from us. The Arxur were making a brisk pace and approaching quickly. Schmidt reached up and clicked her radio, whispering into it, “Hold, we go on Williams burst.”
Soft, barely audible clicks echoed in Schmidt’s trained ears; if you were not listening for them you would not hear the sound of safeties being cut off and weapons readied. The wildlife in the area went quiet, bugs dying down, birds ceasing, all species grew quiet.
The Arxur were 100 meters away and Jellio was shaking as Schmidt slowly reached over and gripped the Tilfish’s feeler with a gentle reassuring squeeze. Her eyes were focused, piercing as they looked at Jellio, her rifle was resting on the berm to the road. Her side arm on one hip, knife on the other, and a sawed off shotgun against her knife. Jellio steadied the rifle in his grip and focused down range.
50 meters, Jellio could smell the Arxur and it made his stomach twist, he wanted to wrench. Did they even bathe? Schmidt could too and felt herself getting on edge, her stomach was in knots already from the waiting. She wanted action, to rip the band-aid off. She had to strain against tunnel vision to keep her situational awareness up. Williams would fire at the right moment, she said a prayer to Saint Mary silently.
33 meters and it happened, the Arxur paused, as if sensing something. Williams did not hesitate when the lead Arxur raised his hand to stop his troop, opening fire with a concentrated burst of 7.62 from his LMG.
The lead Arxur was cut in half as every weapon in the jungle opened fire. Schmidt was counting as she pulled the trigger, “One, two.” Another burst flung from her weapon, “Three.” With the same robotic precision they made their defenses, the soldiers relentlessly cut down the Arxur. Jellio heard the next number as his ears were ringing from his weapon's sporadic fire, “Seven, Eight.” It was now that Schmidt ducked down to reload, “Cover me.” She shouted and Jellio turned to fire wildly at anything that moved along the road. His digit working the trigger as fast as it could go despite the awkward grip for him.
The smell of blood and metal rose to the sensitive Tilfish and made him want to recoil but Schmidt’s rifle rejoined his as he heard it click and her’s open fire. “Reload, I got you!”
Jellio scrambled to load his weapon as Schmidt ticked up her kill count, using the counting to focus and keep straight how many rounds were left in her current magazine. “Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen.” Three more Arxur fell to the ground, directly in her sights after she pulled the trigger.
The Arxur were rushing their position now, a squad of them had turned into a small horde, but the infantry rush was cut well short by a long burst from the much louder LMG at the end of the squad, ripping apart scales, limbs, teeth, and torsos, leaving gore in it’s wake.
The machine gun was so loud that Jellio missed Schmidt’s counting and left his ears ringing even at this distance. In less than a minute, the road was covered in gore that left Jellio reeling and freezing, he couldn’t bring himself to move or fire his weapon.
Schmidt suddenly brought her arm around and close lined him to the ground as return fire ripped apart the trees them where their heads had once been. “Get down!”
She checked Jellio over, “You’re not hit, load your weapon and fire! That’s an order!” She shouted, hoping some fight instinct existed inside the Tilfish as he fumbled with the rifle, she reloaded her own, hearing the Arxur howl when an explosion turned her attention towards the forest, they were trying to flank and just found their god that way.
“Jellio, stay here.” She turned to see Kelly and Swann near her. “Swann with me!” She called to the corporal. “Kelly, take my position with Jellio, make sure he keeps fighting.”
They scrambled up and moved into the trees behind them. Jellio could hear their weapons separate from the squad echoing a few moments later as the next wave of Arxur moved up and started to fight them. He kept shooting, Schmidt on the other hand was somewhere in the woods, moving as a blur.
Anything that moved in this forest was her prey and she tried to time her shots to the bursts in the distance so her position would be harder to find by hearing the gunshots. Swann did the same, moving with her, time and again they would fall upon three, four, or five Arxur with fury and destroy that small detachment in moments as they were searching for more booby traps, only to fade into the leaves before return fire could meet them.
Then it happened, they ambushed a group of three only for another group to appear behind them, Swann cried out into Schmidt’s ears as she spoke, “Fifty-five. Swann? Swann you still with me?”
“Ma’am… run…” She heard the click of a grenade pin and Swann was pulling his side arm. She snapped her eyes for a moment to get a view of him. Swanna was on one knee, his right arm was barely attached, the bicep ripped apart and a dead Arxur with it's rigor mortis jaw while the creature's head had been blown from its body by repeated pistol fire. Swann holding a grenade handle against itself and the ground by weight of what was left of his arm alone.
He had made the decision to ensure that Schmidt couldn't change his mind.
“Swann.” Schmidt barked irritably as she fired another burst and tore an Arxur’s skull from it’s neck. “Fifty-Six.”
Swann raised his left hand, firing his pistol, hitting an Arxur that was closing in for the kill. “Grenade’s live, you can’t carry me away before it goes off. They got my arm and my knee.”Schmidt knelt down as she reloaded, checking Swann over. The light in his eyes was fading, his leg was gone at the knee, and his left arm was torn open at the shoulder, exposing the bone, only his body weight was keeping the grenade lever on so it wouldn’t go off. “Ma’am, run.”
Schmidt nodded and nudged her forehead to his, “See you on the other side.”
She bolted upright, firing full auto as she ran away from Swann’s position who shot at anything trying to chase her with his pistol, over and over again, hitting the next pursuit group in the flank and forcing them to deal with him. They were maybe thirty meters from their squad.
His pistol clicked, he threw it away and pulled another grenade, concealing it between his pocket and his hand as he saw the creatures cautiously close with him, a dozen, no nearly two dozen walking slowly towards his knelt form, pointing their weapons at him. They wanted him alive, they wanted to see what he tasted like. He could see the hunter in their eyes, staring at him as one of them pulled a spear of sorts from his walk and lowered it to point at his chest, forcing his head up as he felt his blood draining, the life was leaving him quickly.
He smiled at the Arxur, “Hey ugly.” He weakly raised his right hand as the rest closed in rapidly towards him, the spear pulling back, he knew they wanted to tear him apart in a feeding frenzy.
Schmidt looked over her shoulder, threw the trees and saw him mouthing the words, she knew those words all too well, “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.”
Swann opened his hand and let the grenade roll from it as the Arxur closest panicked but was stopped by his approaching kin trying to feed upon their wounded prey, it screamed in a panicked voice but the hesitation was too long as both grenades went off and annihilated every single body within five meters, wounding a dozen more within ten.
Schmidt finished her sprint back to her lines, as an Arxur leaned up, weapon armed to Jellio and Hanover, she fired a hip shot from her rifle, hoping her instinct was true on it’s aim. The bullet punched through his throat and sent the Arxur rolling back into the road, “Sixty-nine.”
She called, sliding back into her firing position, Hanover smirked at her, “Nice.”
“Not now pervert, focus.”Hanover raised his rifle and his smirk broadened, “A guy can dream even in his final moments.”
“Zephyr, fire-team B, status?”
Zephyr coughed into the radio as she broadcast back to Schmidt, “1 plus me left, I’m hit in the lung; half my chest is gone.” She coughed again, “I sent Cleland with Tia back to base. I’ve rigged the C4, cease fire on your side, we’re going to draw them in and blow this side of the road to kingdom come.” More coughing came across the radio as the remaining human weapons on the other side of the road went full auto for a moment.
Schmidt winced upon hearing this, they were pinned down and outnumbered. There was no real escape. “Affirmative. Fire team A, cease fire unless fired upon. Let B draw them.” She turned to Hanover and Jellio, “Jellio, you’ve done your job, Hanover, make sure he gets back to the mountain, as soon as the explosives go on, go, sprint for it. Hanover, every bit of ammo you can spare leave it and you too Jellio. Carry Jellio if you have to but make sure he lives.”
Hanover started to protest and Schmidt cut him down with a glare before turning her rifle back as the Arxur charged the positions still firing. Her remaining team used the opportunity to reload their weapons and throw grenades as far as they could.
Schmidt wasn’t sure how many Arxur were coming but it was a lot. The world suddenly went quiet as the air was sucked from it. The echo of the explosion left all their ears ringing as the opposite side of the road atomized.
Schmidt raised her weapon, “Fire at will!” Every remaining soldier opened fire as Hanover and Jellio sprinted for their lives while ditching their ammo magazines and throwing their last grenades. An Arxur gunship came into view, just over the horizon only for a long range anti-air missile to impact into it and send it careening in that moment into the Arxur infantry. Screams of shock followed the explosion as the cheers of the Arxur turned to calls for aid and howls of agony.
They had wised up now, not charging directly but trying to suppress then move in. Williams Machine gun finally stopped short when the area he was in exploded from a rocket on Arxur was carrying, Schmidt snapped her weapon to the end of the contrail and fired, “Ninety.”
She kept firing, hitting what she could until her rifle clicked, “Ninety-Three.” It now she noticed no human weapons were still firing. "See you on the other side." She whispered to her fallen friends and stood to run into the trees at the nearest gray flash.
She pulled her sawed off and leapt through the trees, everyone else’s weapon was silent as she came upon an Arxur at arm’s length. He turned and opened his jaws only for her to press the barrel in and his look of surprise as his tail stood on end before his head turned to a pink mist.
She span the barrel towards the nearest gray thing and pull the second trigger, buckshot ripping apart it’s chest and sending the Arxur to the ground screaming. “Ninety-Five.”
Schmidt pulled her sidearm and started firing, having to put multiple shots into each Arxur to bring it down, she hoped the command would get higher caliber sidearms for the next soldiers who met the Arxur. “Ninety-Seven.” Her pistol slide clicked back and locked, she threw it at an Arxur between some trees as she drew her knife and dashed towards him.
The pistol bouncing off his head bought enough time to slam the knife into it’s throat.
Three Arxur rushed her and she called out, “Ninety-Eight.” Her counting keeping her focus razor sharp as she parried a spear and span, ducking just beyond it’s mouth snapping at her, only for him to just get the bun of her hair as he knocked Schmidt's helmet off. She uppercut, slamming the knife into its eye, twisting and ripping it clear before stabbing again and again, until the Arxur stopped screaming, “Ninety-NinE!”
She let out a gasp all the air driven from her lungs. Her eyes loomed down as agony ripped through her to see a spear punched through her back, through her ribs and chest, she felt her strength fading. Her heart beat against the metal wedged beside it, slowly loosing life and power to keep going.
She wasn’t sure if she could even move as the reptile leaned in to snarl at her, baring its teeth in the corner of her eye. Adrenaline and fight instinct took over.
She tossed the blade to her opposite hand away from the spear and slammed back with her full body weight. She skewered herself deeper on the spear and all the way through, out under her right breast between two ribs.
The Arxur must have been shocked as he lost his balance. Schmidt could sense the stun that she could move as much for her as for her attacker. She span tearing her own flesh to jam the knife into his throat and with all her strength pushed it through the surprised lizard. She nearly decapitated him, even severing a vertebra as it collapsed, twitching in death throes.
Schmidt fell to her knees, feeling herself fading as tunnel vision took over. She did not want to die weakly, she did not want to end quietly. Her lungs burned, her heart ached, her body screamed in confusion at all the error and pain signals her nerves were sending.
She turned to the last of the three Arxur bearing down on her. They hesitated, the Arxur spear skewering her should have killed her but she just slew its wielder.
The bravest Arxur approached with an electric shock in the air as it barred a cattle prod. Slowly thrusting it at her and closing in, scared now. “One Hundred,” She exhaled with gasping breathes.
She could feel herself fading fast as the Arxur closed in on her, the final member of her squad. Her muscle reflex flipped the knife for her to hold the blade and she held the spear with her other hand to steady it. Her helmet camera watched every moment from where it fell to the ground. She rose up just enough to hurled the knife at the attacker. “One-o-one.” She called out as she fell facedown in the dirt beside her would be attacker.
Her helmet camera zoomed upon her as she turned her head and stared into the lens, “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.” She reached for a grenade and pulled the pin as the Arxur leapt onto her, seeking to tear her apart and devour her just as they sought with Swann. The grenade rolled away while they were still in the air.
The Arxur cackled and screamed with glee to finally have a kill. As their jaws started to tear into her flesh, Schmidt's last grenade turned their laughter to fear.

I decided to go ahead and release the next chapter, it is longer than the others because it is the first scene of combat.
I want to thank you all for the encouragement, it was unexpected. There were two complains, one I will address here. I use the Memory Transcription the same way other pieces of written work use Memory Orbs, where you experience it through the eyes of one person but you distinctly know you are watching something in the past and are looking through the eyes of another person. 2nd Person feels like it fits or 3rd person plus internal monologue more so than pure 1st person to me. I apologize if I've gotten this wrong.
Still not 100% about not having an editor and proofreader look it over but it's for fun not for printing.

Date [standardized human time]: December 3, 2136
Thompson turned to Zim who was staring at the radio in astonishment. Thompson was barely twenty but she was a wiz with tech, her father had been an electrician and now she would rig just about anything to work with a 9 volt battery and some bubble gum. “He was telling us that he does not expect us to come back from this assignment and to account for ourselves well.”
Thompson got up from her chair and walked over to Zim, “Hey, I’m here with you, alright?”
Zim turned to her and Thompson could tell the color had drained from her face. She ushered the Tilfish over to a chair and pulled a mug from a nearby canteen kit. “Can Tilfish drink coffee?”
Zim blinked a few times, “I umm… what is coffee?”
Thompson pulled the cold pot from nearby and checked it with her palm, “It’s better hot but this is all we got.” She held up the black liquid. “It helps calm us down, it has a drug in it called caffeine, gives you energy and focuses your mind; at least in humans.” Thompson pulled out her guide book for Tilfish biology and started checking it.
“Let’s see, you can have it, at no more than 100ml per day and in slow sipping increments, can you handle that for me?” Zim nodded, still quaking as she tried to sit awkwardly in the human chair provided to her.
Thompson pulled the coffee to Zim, putting a dash of cream powder in it and sprinkling in a sugar packet. They had plenty but she wanted to slowly make it work. “It’s probably going to taste awful but I do need you to sip it okay? This is 100ml mug so this is every bit of it you can have in a single day, got it?”
Zim nodded and reached for the mug, taking a sip of the still bitter and cold liquid. Zim made a face of disgust and then groaned, “How do you drink this?”
“Carefully with years of practice,” Thompson pulled out a physical paper book and slid it over to Zim, “Can you read our language?”Zim blinked a few times, “Physical paper?”
Thompson smiled, “Makes it easier to destroy if we need to and also means if you can’t read it, you can’t run it through a translation program, you have to physically enter it into a computer to start the decoding process. Can you read our language?”
Zim nodded, “Yes, I learned while you were on the way here, it was required by our surrendering government for all officials to keep their position to learn it.” Thompson smiled at him and started to turn the book open.
“So you know what talking in code means?”
“You mean like the 65 million BC thing?”
“Yeah, we just refer to the Arxur as Bravo-Charlie, Bravor for B and Charlie for C, meaning BC. That way they can’t identify who or what we are talking about without knowing that.” Zim nodded as she opened the book and started to flip through it.
“You’ve got 2 hours to read through this,” Thompson gently reached and caressed the feeler of Zim to reassure her and then pulled the feeler up to the book at the start of it. “There are over 1100 code words in here, I need you to read it as fast as possible okay? Even reading it once might make it where you don’t have to look at the book. If you’re confused about something let me know. When your ready or the fighting begins I’m going to cut on the radio for your side of the room, you’ll start receiving transmissions okay? I know you Tilfish are good at multi-tasking, I’m going to get back on the radio over there.”Thompson pointed to it, “I’m going to turn it onto speakers instead of the head phones.” She reached down to the transmitter and put the microphone in front of Zim along with a pair of headphones on the desk, “I need you to watch how I operate it and listen to what I say and how I say it, then copy me. Our walkies get all sorts of interference from the orbital rounds and firefighting. It’s our job to cut through that static and make sure everyone has the message clear and concisely okay?”
She pointed to the cave entrance, “If anyone comes into there, once the fighting starts,” She reached under the desk and pulled out a pistol from under the desk. It was made for a human hand but Zim got the point when Thompson cocked the pistol, then placed it back into the holster under the desk. “Flip the desk towards the door for cover, pull this gun, and shoot to kill. At that point, our job is done and we hold the line.”She pulled something from under the chair, making the Tilfish jerk at her touch of a sensitive area on the lower thorax. “Relax,” She pulled a small joystick looking device out. It had an orange trigger and a red cap on the top of it along with an antenna sticking out of it.
“This is our detonator, if we’re going to die, pull this.” She pointed at the trigger on the front. “That will unlock the cap on top, flip it open.” Thompson flicked the cap with her thumb to show a red button underneath. “Then push this button, the explosives will go off. You won’t feel a thing and you’ll take a few of those bastards with you. Got it?”Zim took another sip of coffee, she could already feel the black liquid acting on her, making her more alert if somewhat jittery, “Yes, got it.”Thompson went back to her station and got onto the radio, broadcasts were coming through rapid fire and Thompson was replying to some while sending others to Captain Neil. The radios moved and squawked rapidly, between reading and listening, Zim could barely keep up with the coffee adding to her reaction time.
She had precious minutes to get this right and it was starting to dawn on her that she wasn’t going to live. She had to make sure the others that went deep into the mountain did. Every word was strange to her and she had to comprehend them quickly as she moved down the list onto the next page. Her feelers having some difficulty flipping the narrow pieces of paper but her exoskeleton prevented a papercut at least.

Schmidt had ten individuals with her. One machine gun, five rifles, three submachine guns, and two shotguns. That plus the Tilfish Herci and Tia. Neil had insisted on separating the twins in case one died, the other wouldn’t freeze up. The soldiers moved with mechanical precision and made nearly no noise of their presence. It creeped the Tilfish out just how quiet the humans were despite the equipment they carried and their seemingly more cumbersome way of walking. The Tilfish on their native planet where making much more noise than the humans were, which Schmidt say their eyes pay particular attention to how they moved and shifted to avoid making noise.
They were nearly a kilometer from the caldera and had already seen Arxur ships flying overhead. They stuck to the trees and stayed low. The Tilfish were uncomfortable with how the humans had smeared mud, dirt, and tree sap onto their bodies and then done it to themselves. Hanover, Williams, Zephyr, Rhodes, Cleland, Swann, Tenet, Kelly, Yules, and Cambell all walked with Schmidt now, between them eleven soldiers and two Tilfish recruits.
They had armed the recruits with rifles that had been jammed in single shot mode in case the Tilfish panicked. They came upon a road, the road the civilians hours before had fled along. Tracks of vehicles, footprints of the thousands that had walked down it still embedded in the road. The Arxur would know which way to go to find them, that was for sure. Carefully examining it, Schimdt measured every variable she knew how.
The way the wind shifted, the scent of something and the sound of distant engines told her this was the best spot they were going to get. Her instincts of years of training and now battles told her this was their point.
“Zephyr.” She whispered and the sergeant came up to her. She turned her head and made some hand signals to setup the ambush before Zephyr nodded signaling back the confirmation. Jellio seemed confused and Schmidt turned to explain, as she pointed at Zephyr who was working her way down the squad taking every other member to follow her and then getting Tia to follow with her back the way they came.
“They’re going to go back 100 meters and cross the road then make their way down here and signal with a red flashlight when they are in position, we’ll make this our crossfire ambush.” She turned to Williams and motioned him forward as Zephyr took Rhodes, Cleland, Tenet, Yules, and Tia.
Williams moved up with the big heavy weapon, a rapid fire belt fed machine gun that must have weighed a good 20 kg with all the ammo he had to carry. “Yes Ma’am?”
“Setup at the end of the line, 20 meters behind us. I want them to have to punch through the whole crossfire to silence you gun, we ambush on your weapon firing, understood?” Williams nodded with his face full of mud and hustled back away from them.
“Hanover, get the claymores, rig them along the forest with trip wires, double time. Anything comes hunting us I want it to find out if there god is real or not.” Hanover nodded and went to each soldier, taking the mines. Zephyr would be doing the same on the other side.
Jellio looked confused for a moment, “What… what do we do now?”
Schmidt took out her flask and took a sip of coffee, “The worst part, we wait.”
Jellio was now even more confused as he whispered, “Waiting is the worst part? I thought the violence would be?”
Schimidt and everyone around her took a moment to chuckle or stifle a giggle. “No, waiting is. You hurry up and wait, and wait. You know it’s coming but you can do nothing except wait for it. Once it starts, our actions are mechanical, practiced, rehearsed almost but leading up that, it’s waiting; painful, terrifying, and crippling.”
A red light signaled towards Schmidt’s position and she signaled back with her own. Seconds turned to minutes, Hanover returned to her position, Schmidt’s troopers spread out in units of 2, with Jellio being her second.

Jellio tensed and Schmidt motioned him down, laying her belly on the ground at a nearby rise over the road. She put a finger up to her lips and Jellio seemed to get the hint with a nod. Coming into view on the road were a dozen Arxur, hooting and hollering, lacking any form of stealth.
Good, they can’t smell us and they haven’t seen us. The mud would cover our heat signatures and the earth and trees would be all they would smell from us. The Arxur were making a brisk pace and approaching quickly. Schmidt reached up and clicked her radio, whispering into it, “Hold, we go on Williams burst.”

Then it happened, they ambushed a group of three only for another group to appear behind them, Swann cried out into Schmidt’s ears as she spoke, “Fifty-five. Swann? Swann you still with me?”
“Ma’am… run…” She heard the click of a grenade pin and Swann was pulling his side arm. She snapped her eyes for a moment to get a view of him. Swanna was on one knee, his right arm was barely attached, the bicep ripped apart and a dead Arxur with it's rigor mortis jaw while the creature's head had been blown from its body by repeated pistol fire. Swann holding a grenade handle against itself and the ground by weight of what was left of his arm alone.
He had made the decision to ensure that Schmidt couldn't change his mind.
“Swann.” Schmidt barked irritably as she fired another burst and tore an Arxur’s skull from it’s neck. “Fifty-Six.”
Swann raised his left hand, firing his pistol, hitting an Arxur that was closing in for the kill. “Grenade’s live, you can’t carry me away before it goes off. They got my arm and my knee.”Schmidt knelt down as she reloaded, checking Swann over. The light in his eyes was fading, his leg was gone at the knee, and his left arm was torn open at the shoulder, exposing the bone, only his body weight was keeping the grenade lever on so it wouldn’t go off. “Ma’am, run.”
Schmidt nodded and nudged her forehead to his, “See you on the other side.”
She bolted upright, firing full auto as she ran away from Swann’s position who shot at anything trying to chase her with his pistol, over and over again, hitting the next pursuit group in the flank and forcing them to deal with him. They were maybe thirty meters from their squad.
His pistol clicked, he threw it away and pulled another grenade, concealing it between his pocket and his hand as he saw the creatures cautiously close with him, a dozen, no nearly two dozen walking slowly towards his knelt form, pointing their weapons at him. They wanted him alive, they wanted to see what he tasted like. He could see the hunter in their eyes, staring at him as one of them pulled a spear of sorts from his walk and lowered it to point at his chest, forcing his head up as he felt his blood draining, the life was leaving him quickly.
He smiled at the Arxur, “Hey ugly.” He weakly raised his right hand as the rest closed in rapidly towards him, the spear pulling back, he knew they wanted to tear him apart in a feeding frenzy.
Schmidt looked over her shoulder, threw the trees and saw him mouthing the words, she knew those words all too well, “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.”
Swann opened his hand and let the grenade roll from it as the Arxur closest panicked but was stopped by his approaching kin trying to feed upon their wounded prey, it screamed in a panicked voice but the hesitation was too long as both grenades went off and annihilated every single body within five meters, wounding a dozen more within ten.
Schmidt finished her sprint back to her lines, as an Arxur leaned up, weapon armed to Jellio and Hanover, she fired a hip shot from her rifle, hoping her instinct was true on it’s aim. The bullet punched through his throat and sent the Arxur rolling back into the road, “Sixty-nine.”
She called, sliding back into her firing position, Hanover smirked at her, “Nice.”
“Not now pervert, focus.”Hanover raised his rifle and his smirk broadened, “A guy can dream even in his final moments.”
“Zephyr, fire-team B, status?”
Zephyr coughed into the radio as she broadcast back to Schmidt, “1 plus me left, I’m hit in the lung; half my chest is gone.” She coughed again, “I sent Cleland with Tia back to base. I’ve rigged the C4, cease fire on your side, we’re going to draw them in and blow this side of the road to kingdom come.” More coughing came across the radio as the remaining human weapons on the other side of the road went full auto for a moment.
Schmidt winced upon hearing this, they were pinned down and outnumbered. There was no real escape. “Affirmative. Fire team A, cease fire unless fired upon. Let B draw them.” She turned to Hanover and Jellio, “Jellio, you’ve done your job, Hanover, make sure he gets back to the mountain, as soon as the explosives go on, go, sprint for it. Hanover, every bit of ammo you can spare leave it and you too Jellio. Carry Jellio if you have to but make sure he lives.”
Hanover started to protest and Schmidt cut him down with a glare before turning her rifle back as the Arxur charged the positions still firing. Her remaining team used the opportunity to reload their weapons and throw grenades as far as they could.
Schmidt wasn’t sure how many Arxur were coming but it was a lot. The world suddenly went quiet as the air was sucked from it. The echo of the explosion left all their ears ringing as the opposite side of the road atomized.
Schmidt raised her weapon, “Fire at will!” Every remaining soldier opened fire as Hanover and Jellio sprinted for their lives while ditching their ammo magazines and throwing their last grenades. An Arxur gunship came into view, just over the horizon only for a long range anti-air missile to impact into it and send it careening in that moment into the Arxur infantry. Screams of shock followed the explosion as the cheers of the Arxur turned to calls for aid and howls of agony.
They had wised up now, not charging directly but trying to suppress then move in. Williams Machine gun finally stopped short when the area he was in exploded from a rocket on Arxur was carrying, Schmidt snapped her weapon to the end of the contrail and fired, “Ninety.”
She kept firing, hitting what she could until her rifle clicked, “Ninety-Three.” It now she noticed no human weapons were still firing. "See you on the other side." She whispered to her fallen friends and stood to run into the trees at the nearest gray flash.
She pulled her sawed off and leapt through the trees, everyone else’s weapon was silent as she came upon an Arxur at arm’s length. He turned and opened his jaws only for her to press the barrel in and his look of surprise as his tail stood on end before his head turned to a pink mist.
She span the barrel towards the nearest gray thing and pull the second trigger, buckshot ripping apart it’s chest and sending the Arxur to the ground screaming. “Ninety-Five.”
Schmidt pulled her sidearm and started firing, having to put multiple shots into each Arxur to bring it down, she hoped the command would get higher caliber sidearms for the next soldiers who met the Arxur. “Ninety-Seven.” Her pistol slide clicked back and locked, she threw it at an Arxur between some trees as she drew her knife and dashed towards him.
The pistol bouncing off his head bought enough time to slam the knife into it’s throat.
Three Arxur rushed her and she called out, “Ninety-Eight.” Her counting keeping her focus razor sharp as she parried a spear and span, ducking just beyond it’s mouth snapping at her, only for him to just get the bun of her hair as he knocked Schmidt's helmet off. She uppercut, slamming the knife into its eye, twisting and ripping it clear before stabbing again and again, until the Arxur stopped screaming, “Ninety-NinE!”
She let out a gasp all the air driven from her lungs. Her eyes loomed down as agony ripped through her to see a spear punched through her back, through her ribs and chest, she felt her strength fading. Her heart beat against the metal wedged beside it, slowly loosing life and power to keep going.
She wasn’t sure if she could even move as the reptile leaned in to snarl at her, baring its teeth in the corner of her eye. Adrenaline and fight instinct took over.
She tossed the blade to her opposite hand away from the spear and slammed back with her full body weight. She skewered herself deeper on the spear and all the way through, out under her right breast between two ribs.
The Arxur must have been shocked as he lost his balance. Schmidt could sense the stun that she could move as much for her as for her attacker. She span tearing her own flesh to jam the knife into his throat and with all her strength pushed it through the surprised lizard. She nearly decapitated him, even severing a vertebra as it collapsed, twitching in death throes.
Schmidt fell to her knees, feeling herself fading as tunnel vision took over. She did not want to die weakly, she did not want to end quietly. Her lungs burned, her heart ached, her body screamed in confusion at all the error and pain signals her nerves were sending.
She turned to the last of the three Arxur bearing down on her. They hesitated, the Arxur spear skewering her should have killed her but she just slew its wielder.
The bravest Arxur approached with an electric shock in the air as it barred a cattle prod. Slowly thrusting it at her and closing in, scared now. “One Hundred,” She exhaled with gasping breathes.
She could feel herself fading fast as the Arxur closed in on her, the final member of her squad. Her muscle reflex flipped the knife for her to hold the blade and she held the spear with her other hand to steady it. Her helmet camera watched every moment from where it fell to the ground. She rose up just enough to hurled the knife at the attacker. “One-o-one.” She called out as she fell facedown in the dirt beside her would be attacker.
Her helmet camera zoomed upon her as she turned her head and stared into the lens, “Nemo Me Impune Lacessit.” She reached for a grenade and pulled the pin as the Arxur leapt onto her, seeking to tear her apart and devour her just as they sought with Swann. The grenade rolled away while they were still in the air.
The Arxur cackled and screamed with glee to finally have a kill. As their jaws started to tear into her flesh, Schmidt's last grenade turned their laughter to fear.
2023.03.22 19:56 k1mbeep Passport just shipped but appointment and travel are tomorrow
Travelling tomorrow 3/23. My husband was literally boarding the plane for his nail-biter day-of appointment in Puerto Rico just now when he got the update that his passport shipped. No other updates since "In process" only two days ago, after he'd already booked his appointment. I am here to receive the passport IF it arrives tomorrow morning but if it's not here yet and I have to leave for my flight, what the heck do we do? Can they print him some kind of copy or booklet of the approved passport at his appointment tomorrow? Appointment is at 9 am, 1:40 connecting flight to leave PR (this was really cutting it close anyway), 9 PM international flight. Also the tracking number url is not working, any tips? Talk about down to the wire, we were finally feeling better about this appointment but now this will probably prevent him getting it there.

Across 1986, Japan Airlines (JAL) partnered with various publishers to produce promotional items related to their Boeing 747 air fleets, and their international & general flight activities. These items included CD music & audio compilations, VHS, VHD etc and of course... Laserdisc. Now I've been a bit of an air disaster nerd for most of my life, but recently I revisited information on the August 1985 air disaster of Japan Air Lines Flight 123. For those of you who aren't aware: A Japan Airlines Boeing 747 crashed in the Chitose mountains after a 30 minute long fight from the pilots with an uncontrollable plane, after takeoff from Tokyo Haneda airport, resulting in 520 fatalities. As a result, and I quote: "The Japanese public's confidence in Japan Air Lines took a dramatic downturn in the wake of the disaster, with passenger numbers on domestic routes dropping by one-third.... In the months after the crash, domestic traffic decreased by as much as 25%. In 1986, for the first time in a decade, fewer passengers boarded JAL's overseas flights during the New Year period than the previous year. Some of them considered switching to All Nippon Airways, JAL's main competitor, as a safer alternative." I then realised... I own a Laserdisc about 747. A japanese laserdisc. a JAL Laserdisc. that was produced the year after. I therefore posit that the JAL Jetstream series of BGV promotional items (Laserdiscs included) that were released starting from March 1986 (7 months after the disaster) were produced as marketing in an attempt to get people to fly JAL again, especially their 747 fleet, because of this accident. 5 of the 9 LDs that were released in 1986 of the JAL Jetstream series are 747 specific, and I own "B-747 Cruising" myself which is what led me to this 'discovery'. A perhaps rather morbid tale, and largely conjecture, but something I found nonetheless interesting to wonder about... Pictured below: my JAL Jetstream 747 Cruising copy.
