So just to preface I’ve been playing guitar about 8 months now. Never played an instrument before but I’ve put a lot of time into guitar and learning music as a whole. That’s theory, reading, rhythm, and improv. I take jazz lessons as well.
So I’ll occasionally play solo around my college campus. I’ve been approached a lot this way and recently was invited to join a pseudo band. This week I played with them for the second time; also second time having met them. I have a lot of fun playing with a drummer and the bass player but the second guitarist, who plays lead and is essentially the ring leader of this group, has already managed to make playing together extremely unpleasant for me.
Foremost, he constantly complains to me about what I’m doing while we’re jamming/playing some specific song. He’ll walk up to me, tell me to stop(drummer and bass still going) to bicker that I’m not in time, my rhythm is monotonous, or some other complaint about what I’m playing or how. Obviously I probably don’t have perfect timing and Im only so experienced with guitar, although I play with a metronome daily, but it’s almost like I don’t even get a chance to feel the music or just even play anything without being interrupted.
Then the guy is constantly trying to explain something to me that I actually understand already but he feels the need to like lecture me on something that honestly, theoretically and technically, I completely understand. For example he wanted me to play this chord progression in the most specific way, which obviously not knowing those specific chords I couldn’t. But instead of just letting me play the same shit in a different place on the neck he tells me to just stop playing.
Likewise, the songs he’s trying to cover are like arguably intricate jazz blues, which he doesn’t theoretically understand just watched a video or something on how to play it I assume. I love jazz but for a cover band of mediocre ability I’m more interested in playing teen spirit or just genuinely fun songs because I play jazz with my teacher plenty and I already have to analyze my own homework. Lastly, second time meeting them and this guy is obsessed with “gigging” when these guys are no where near that level. Not that I am either.
TLDR: Essentially, I hate to miss an opportunity to play with other people but the most recent “practice” made me miserable. Sorry for the rant but, I don’t know if I should just keep sucking it up or just save myself from not having fun, which I feel like should be having.

So a little bit of backstory. My roommate is probably the most idiotic guy I’ve ever met. I can’t figure out what his deal is but he has a kid that he basically lost custody of (in another colorful plot twist, the baby mom was/is also homeless, but she literally told him she’d rather be homeless than be with him and ran off with the kid to a shelter). So he “adopted” another woman less than 24 hours after his baby mom told him off, and let her move into our house basically immediately. Even giving her her own key! I figure this guy really has some kind of complex where he wants/needs to feel needed and therefore rescues random people. But I really hate that we have to adopt these people (lord knows where they came from) and give them keys to our house which is a whole separate issue. But his new girlfriend is a ham planet and probably the most obnoxious roommate we have, even though she’s not paying rent at all. I’ve been trying to figure out how she manifested so perfectly as this person who sits at our house all day with no job, and my roommate thinks it’s perfect because there’s someone sitting at home all day to “watch the dog”. But she regularly blasts obnoxious music, takes over the shared bathroom for 3 hours at a time to do her makeup (why? You have nowhere to go 😭) , and is generally loud and obnoxious. I also think it’s hilarious because we have a spare bathroom downstairs that doesn’t have a shower, and it would be less inconvenient for everyone if she would just use that one. But she won’t go downstairs at all 😭 if someone is in the upstairs bathroom she’s like “wow I don’t feel like walking downstairs”. (I bet you don’t). But that leaves the one shower that’s supposed to be shared by 4 people (!!) monopolized by her for hours. I had to leave for work early yesterday because I didnt even want to be at my house because she was doing this , and also blasting the most aggravating mainstream rock music (think, songs that are aggressive but not good) at a volume I couldn’t hear my TV over. The whole time she doesn’t even live here. I hate having to fight to use my bathroom with someone who doesn’t even pay rent but the entitlement is real 😭
