I've written a short story about trans issues but am not trans myself. I am therefore seeking input to make the story more true to life. Please share your experience in relation to what I present, ESPECIALLY if I venture into offensive, cringey, or just-plain-wrong territory. (Also happy for general criticism.)

I sat in my car, picking at something crusty on my jeans. My shift at Arby’s started in five minutes. Trish walked by my car and waved, headed for work with her rainbow bob, her inability to hold a conversation without mentioning Dr. Who, My Chemical Romance, or her pothead boyfriend. I shouldn’t be mean. She was nice, my only friend at work. She stumbled over nothing through Arby’s back door.
I looked at my nails, still painted seafoam from last night. I should have removed the polish. I should have tied my hair back and gone in like normal—just another day in the land of make-believe. I rehearsed the words I wanted to say, willing myself to be brave, but my heart only revved higher.
My manager stepped out of the Arby’s to smoke. He looked at my car, scowled, and paced the other direction. His shirt was untucked in the back. He must have been moving boxes, restocking—Dirk’s job, probably late again.
I got out of my car, still picking at my jeans. My hands only stopped fidgeting when I gripped the Arby’s back door.
My manager nodded at me and said, “Good morning, Kev.” He tossed his cigarette on the ground.
I held the door for him. “Who’s on the schedule today?” I already knew.
“Everybody but Mrs. Davis. Dirk texted, said he’ll be late.”
I followed him through the kitchen, willing myself to sound casual. “Once everyone’s here, I was wondering if I could call a little meeting.”
“A meeting?” His tone said it all. This was Arby’s. We didn’t have meetings.
“Just a little thing,” I said. “I want to run something past everyone.”
“About what?”
“Nothing, really. It’ll be quick.”
“Quick? How quick?” My manager straightened the kitchen—squaring pans on a shelf, knives on a magnetic rack. “I don’t know, Kev. It’s hard to find time where everyone can stop what they’re doing.”
“I know, and I don’t ask this lightly—”
“We’ll talk about it later,” said my manager. He tugged open the walk-in freezer and was gone.
Off to a great start. I pulled up my jeans and clocked in.

Trish was on the register and I was on prep, but she kept looking at me, finding excuses to come back. She knew something was up.
“Is my drink back here?” “Did you see that special request on the beef and cheddar?” “Danny’s mad at me again, but fuck him.” “Did you paint your nails? Why? They’re cute.” “I know you’re already thin but you should try keto anyway, I have so much energy now.”
I made the bare minimum of communication, nodding and mumbling. I assembled sandwiches, filled fry sleeves, slipped the orders into bags, thankful for something to do with my hands, dreading what came next. The words repeated in my mind. I knew them. I told myself I could do it, that I had to. I couldn’t not do it. I had set a deadline for myself—a family reunion next week in Florida—but that couldn’t be the first time. I’d fold under the pressure of my family. My coworkers would be my test run, and this was the last time that most of them would be in one spot: Shya and Christina coming in at 3:30 while Dirk and Jason slouched towards the end of their shift; my manager in his office; Trish flitting around like a parrot. This was it. What I needed to say would only take a minute, my manager be damned.
The order cue withered by 3:00, but I worked just as fast. The minutes crawled by. I couldn’t slow down. I couldn’t mess this up, I couldn’t tack on twelve more months of cowardice, another year of mimicking the person that I was never meant to be.
Shya arrived early and sat at one of the tables in the dining room, playing with her phone. Christina was five minutes late. I looked at the order cue—only two. I rehearsed the words I wanted to say one more time.
“Trish,” I said over my shoulder, turning to her. She was taking an order from a man at the counter. “Oops, sorry.”
Trish held up a finger to her customer and gave me her attention.
“You can finish with him,” I said.
“It’s okay, what’s up?” asked Trish.
I looked at the man. He had a face purpose-built for being puzzled.
“Can you meet me at the walk-in?” I asked.
Trish raised an eyebrow but nodded. “Be right back,” she said to the puzzled man.
Jason and Dirk were by the back exit, clocking out.
“Guys,” I said, “just a minute. Before you leave, could you meet me at the freezer?”
They didn’t respond one way or the other. I took it as a yes and found Shya at the prep table. She happily stepped away when I asked. Christina was getting her own register ready, about to help the puzzled man, but I got to her in time. He could wait.
I went to my manager’s office. It was a cramped space, barely big enough for a desk. My manager was on his laptop.
“Can you come to the freezer?” I asked.
“What’s the matter?” he said.
“Nothing. It’s just that thing I was talking about earlier. The meeting.”
“Kev, I’m sorry, but we can’t take everyone off their stations.”
“I already did.”
I left my manager there, dumbfounded. I couldn’t stop now. He followed with a grumble.
It was weird, having all of us (except Mrs. Davis) in one place. Trish was concerned, my manager annoyed, but everyone else was as indifferent as always. The puzzled man at the counter edged to the side, peeking at what we were up to. It was now or never.
“Thanks everyone,” I said. “Sorry. I’ll make this quick.” The rehearsed words ran through my head. I was ready. “Though you have known me as Kevin, in private I have identified as a woman for most of my life. I have decided to formally begin my public transition to a woman. From now on, my preferred pronouns are she/hehers and my name is Jessica.”
Dirk laughed.
“Is that it?” asked my manager. “Great, congrats.” He headed to his office. “Back to your stations, please.”
Shya and Christina slid away, glancing at me. They put their heads together and whispered.
“Really?” said Jason, looking around. Dirk laughed again, pushing him towards the door.
“I thought he was going to shoot us,” said Jason. Both boys laughed as they left the building.
Only Trish stayed behind. She hugged me.
“Jessica!” she said. “That’s amazing! I love it! Can I call you Jess?”
I squirmed away. No, she couldn’t call me Jess!
“More people need to watch Dr. Who,” continued Trish, oblivious. “Jodie Whittaker did an amazing job—not as good as David Tennant, but that’s okay, David Tennant was amazing—but if the Doctor can swap genders then why can’t the rest of us?”
Trish went on. I stopped listening. Did I expect something different? Not from Dirk and Jason. Fuck them. But from the others? Yes. I absolutely expected something different. My manager is nothing if not dutiful. I imagined there would be some sort of paperwork that he’d pull from his desk, that he’d hand it to me with a selfish comment—“Yet more work for me to do…”
Shya and Christina were at the prep table, staring at me, ever-whispering. I hadn’t expected a Woman’s Welcome Wagon, but leering? Immediate and open gossip? They were Gen Z and I was a Millennial. I thought we were all on the same page about this.
“51 East is a great salon,” said Trish. “We have to go. They can do wonders for your frizz, and the split ends, and eyebrows, and—”
“Thanks, Trish,” I said. “Maybe later.”
“Excuse me,” called the puzzled man. “Do you want my order or not? ‘Cause I can go to KFC.”
Trish hurried off.
I had many misconceptions about my transition, but as I stood by the freezer—my manager in his office, Trish at the counter, the girls still across the room, whispering—I was struck by a familiar feeling: solitude. I had thought that announcing my transition might ease that feeling. It’s foolish, in retrospect. Why would it? I hated my coworkers. Why would my transition change that?
I went back to the prep table. The puzzled man’s order popped into the cue. I was alone— surprise—but I took solace in my progress. I was alone, but I was myself—my whole self. I hadn’t cut a piece of me off and left it at home, like usual. I was all of me, and that was enough company for now.

My transition was “slow”—a slog, a crawl, tectonic—but I wanted it that way. Frankly, I liked myself as I was: a lithe 5’7’’ with long, chestnut hair. My face was noble like something on a Roman coin. I didn’t see a reason to change my appearance, especially my wardrobe. I liked my jeans and sweaters, my t-shirts and chunky glasses. I thought of myself as a tom-boy and was comfortable. The only thing that needed correcting was my gender. Hormone therapy was expensive, and Arby’s wasn’t a cash cow, but I was willing to wait. Frankly, I didn’t even want hormone therapy. Being acknowledged as a woman would have been enough. If I was misgendered, I would correct the mistake, and we would move on. I anticipated some awkward conversations, but—at the time—I understood people to be generally decent. Common courtesy would win out in the end.
The next day I worked the register. I wore a fresh coat of nail polish. The badge with my dead name was at home and I didn’t have a new one yet. My first few transactions went great. I wasn’t misgendered, though that’s only because I wasn’t gendered at all. The customers didn’t know my name and had no reason to refer to me in the third person—I was standing right there, taking their order.
But, just before the lunch rush, I was wrapping up an order for a little old lady. (Curly fries and a shake.) She handed me her cash and said, “Thank you, sir.”
I took her money, hesitant to correct her, but I had to. This was my transition, my new normal. I committed.
“It’s actually ma’am,” I said.
“Excuse me?”
“I identify as a woman, and prefer that you call me ma’am.”
The little old lady’s mouth hung open. “Oh.”
The rest of our transaction was wordless.
I fumed about the exchange. “Oh.” Is that what passes for courtesy these days? I know she was an old woman, maybe not as progressive as most—probably conservative—but I was a real person. I wasn’t a political statement, or something that her opinion could inform. I was a person. I had shown her my true self and all she could say was “oh.”
The customers rolled through lunch. We got busy and I was misgendered again (“Thanks, guy”), but only noticed after the fact. I decided that the customers needed some help.
Being an Arby’s, we had plenty of past employees—and plenty of forfeited name badges. I’d seen my manager pull them out of his desk before. When he left after the lunch rush I dug through his desk, finding a “Jessica.” I put the name tag on and resumed my role at the register.
My very next customer was a man in a fluorescent vest. He ordered a double beef and cheddar meal, noticed my new nametag, and said, “Lose a bet?”
I couldn’t muster a response. He rambled about the Browns and the Bengals, chuckling as if this were a conversation, as if I gave a fuck. I gave the man his food and hurried back to my boss’ desk. He had blank name badges, too. I grabbed one, a Sharpie, and wrote “SHE/HEHERS” on it. I pinned the second badge under the first.
I returned to my station, ready for battle. I fully expected someone to ask what “she/hehers” meant and had my explanation loaded. I readied myself for ridicule, open hostility, but instead was presented with a sheepish woman who wouldn’t look me in the eyes. I tried not to ascribe meaning to it—maybe she was just a shy woman—but the same thing happened again with another customer, a young black guy. Then came an older man in flannel who refused to break eye contact, staring me down like we were in a western.
“Smokehouse brisket,” he said.
I stared right back. “Meal?”
“Yep.”
“Large?”
“Yep.”
“Drink?”
“Coke.”
“For here?”
His mouth twisted as if he was rolling saliva across his tongue, ready to spit. He snorted and said, “To go.”
I slapped his cup onto the counter, took his card, and finally looked away. I had to, if I was going to use the register.
It was my name tags. It had to be. My pronouns were impossible to miss, scrawled across the silver badge in big, black letters. I was speaking truth through my Sharpie and no one wanted to hear it.
My manager came in through the customer entrance. He nodded at me, walking in that panicked way he always did, when he stopped and did a double take at my chest. He came around the counter, smiled at the old cowboy, and stood beside me, inches from my ear.
“Come see me in my office,” he muttered.
“Now?” I said.
“After you finish with this gentleman.”
“But there’s a line.”
“Dirk!” shouted my manager, still so close to my ear. “Get up here! Register!”
I tossed the old cowboy’s card onto the counter and turned, headed for the office. My manager hurried after me. We passed Dirk along the way. The dickhead smirked at me, stubble and acne stretching across his face.
We got to my manager’s office and he told me to sit down.
“I’d rather stand.”
“Fine.” He weaseled past me and fell into the chair behind his desk. “Where’d you get that name tag?”
“I found it.”
“Where?”
I shouldn’t have been so mad. I should have taken a breath, apologized, but the day had already been too much.
“Your desk,” I said. “Your tiny, dumbass desk. I knew you’d never do me the great honor of bestowing this blessed nametag upon me, so I bestowed it upon myself.”
“And you took a blank one, too? And defaced it?”
I was disgusted. Fuck his nametag! “So what?”
My manager took a deep breath. “Jessica. You can’t go through my desk.”
“I didn’t—”
“You did. And I’m sorry I didn’t think to give you a new tag, but you didn’t ask, either. I’m busy—we’re all busy. All I want is for this place to run smoothly.”
I let that sit for a moment. “Okay. So?”
“Don’t go in my desk again.”
“Fine. I wouldn’t, anyway.”
“Great. And how’s the trans-thing? Are you treating the customers alright?”
“Am I treating them right?”
“Yes. That’s your job—”
“I’ve been humiliated! All day!” I couldn’t help myself. I was shouting. “Not a single person has had an ounce of decency! I’m a woman! So what? Why is everyone acting like I’m trying to take a shit in their mouth?”
My manager raised his hands, urging quiet. “Jessica—calm down, it’s alright.”
“No it isn’t! It’s bullshit!”
“Listen—if this were San Francisco or New York, okay, but this is Xenia. Xenia, Ohio. You’re lucky to have me for a boss. I know guys who’d have fired you already.”
People talk about seeing red. I don’t think that’s accurate. I saw my manager and that’s all: his dumb, flabby face shaved clean like a lab rat’s ass, his bald spot gleaming in the fluorescent lights. A decision resounded in my head. I unpinned the name tags from my uniform and slammed them on the desk, hardly noticing that I stabbed myself.
“Jessica, come on—”
I turned out of the office. My manager hurried after me.
“We can put you on prep or window,” he said. “Don’t make this mistake, Jessica. You’re a valued team member.”
I banged the back door open, threw my hat on the ground, kicked it mid-stride.
“Jessica!” called my manager, standing in the back door. “If you leave now, you can’t come back. I’m a patient man, but—”
I was in my car and slammed the door. Fuck Arby’s. Fuck my manager. That was “Kev’s” job, and he could keep it; a dead-end-job for a dead name.

Trish wouldn’t stop calling me. I finally picked up. “Yeah?”
“Jess! Oh my god! Did you really quit?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s amazing! I’m so proud of you! Where are you?”
I had left Arby’s but didn’t want to go home, so was parked in the Taco Bell down the street. “T-Bell. Why?”
“I’ll be right there. Don’t leave! I have a gift!”
I hung up. The idea of Trish visiting annoyed me further, but I couldn’t work up the impulse to leave. I was tired, and sad, and didn’t want to be anywhere else. I picked at my jeans. Time seemed to stand still in my car, the ebb and flow of traffic like a gif. I was alone, but not lonely. I closed my eyes and must have dozed, because next thing I knew my passenger door flew open and Trish slipped in.
“Oh my god,” she said, clutching her purse. “When work called and asked me to come in I was like, ‘Why?’ and they said you walked out and I was like—” Trish pulled a face, her eyeshadow shrinking around bulging eyes. “What happened?”
“I couldn’t deal with it,” I said. “Too much bullshit.”
“Oh my god, same, I just wish I could walk out like that. So badass. But what happened?”
“I was insulted. Humiliated.”
“By who?”
“Everyone. Surprise.”
“Everyone?”
“That’s what I said. I don’t know why I expected different.”
“Because you see the best in people, Jess! You’re a good bean.” Trish reached into her purse. “Want to see your gift?”
She pulled it out before I could respond: a plastic cup, discolored white. It had a Pizza Hut logo and a picture of Casper the Friendly Ghost, the old comic book version.
“Thanks?” I said, taking the cup. I turned it around in my hands: there were three more ghosts in lawn chairs and an old-school Pepsi logo.
“I got it from the thrift store a while ago,” said Trish. “It was for my colored pencils, but I thought you should have it.”
“Okay?” I looked in the cup. Sure enough, there were hundreds of colorful pinpoints at the bottom, muddled together.
“Because of the Pizza Hut analogy,” added Trish.
I had no idea what she was talking about.
“Oh my god you haven’t heard this?” said Trish. “It was from someone on Twitter: A trans person is like an old Pizza Hut.” I sighed, went to give Trish the cup back, but she kept talking. “You know when a Pizza Hut closes and they put something else in it? Like a check-cash place, or whatever? It still sort of looks like a Pizza Hut, but it isn’t, so you have to think: If someone goes in there and orders a large pepperoni and sausage, who’s the asshole really? You know?”
“Thanks Trish, I appreciate it, but I don’t really need this.”
Trish took the cup and put it in my cup holder. “Keep it anyway. You’re just mad right now, but it’ll grow on you.”
“I’m not mad, I’m just—”
“The other thing,” said Trish, “about the Pizza Hut. They do stuff to it, you know? The shapes are all the same, but they paint it, they change the sign. You know? They let people know that the Pizza Hut isn’t a Pizza Hut anymore.”
I knew where this was going and wasn’t having any of it. “I wore a new name tag. I even put on a second one with my pronouns.”
“Psh,” said Trish. “You and I both know that people don’t read signs—stare straight at the menus without reading a damn thing.”
“But you just told me to change the signs.”
“And the paint,” said Trish. Her fingers brushed across my temple. She touched my shirt. “The furnishings. Everything. It’s time for a refresh. I know you’re a woman but Jess, honey—you don’t look like one. You could!” Trish ran a thumb over my cheekbone. “You’ll make a beautiful woman! But you have to try.” She poked at my Adam’s apple and I slapped her hand.
“Fucking stop.”
“Stop what?”
“Prodding at my face like I’m your fucking art project.”
“Jess! Please, I know you’re upset, but I’m trying to help.”
“I’m not upset! I just need someone to actually listen to me for five fucking seconds! I like how I look! I like my clothes! I like everything about me, except for this one, small, stupid detail!”
Trish looked away. “Gender isn’t a small detail.”
“No. I know—”
“And you’re being mean as hell right now.”
I’m not proud of what came next, but I hadn’t asked Trish to be there, and I sure as shit hadn’t asked for her advice. I was mad all over again and just wanted to be alone, so said, “Feel free to leave.”
She did, and took the Pizza Hut cup with her.

The culturally ubiquitous Kanye West, now legally just “Ye”, seemed to be working on everything besides music after releasing his latest solo effort, ‘Jesus Is King.’ A post-Jesus spin-cycle rendition of his cancelled album ‘Yandhi’, it gave listeners what was to be the first of his exclusively non-secular gospel releases “from here on out.” After the uniquely mixed reception to a West effort, Kanye embarked on many ventures outside of music, including helming a creative director role at Gap and casually running for president of the United States. As Kanye’s Gap and very successful Yeezy ventures seemed to make him a billionaire by April 2020, music appeared to be an afterthought for the next iteration of his artistic catalogue.
During an interview with Michèle Lamy in May 2020, cinematographer Arthur Jafa, whose work includes Jay-Z’s 4:44 music video, announced he was collaborating with West on a single off his previously unannounced record, God’s Country. This was our first tease at a new West album since announcing Jesus is King II with Dr. Dre just one month after the former’s release. Stems from these sessions have made their way to the public, including on the aforementioned single and video Jafa worked on, Wash Us In The Blood. A collaboration between Kanye, Travis Scott, Ronny J, and mixing by Dre, the industrial underpinnings of the track still met the laundry cycle of Jesus himself with censored lyrics and heavily reinforcing his reinvigorated faith. Excitement in the project was replenished by fans of the old Kanye just two weeks later, as he dropped a teaser to a track called DONDA, in memory of his late mother on what would have been her 71st birthday. The snippet begins with Donda West reciting lyrics to KRS-One’s Sound of the Police, with Kanye rapping about police brutality and racism over a soulful beat reminiscent of his earlier production techniques. The anticipation seemed to climax as Kanye quickly tweeted and deleted a 20-track album now called DONDA to be released on July 24, which included track names from the Yandhi era. In typical Ye fashion, this was changed 2 days later to a shortened 12 track album and seemingly focused on a gospel tone. July 24th came and went with not a peep from Kanye, until July 26th when he posted the official artwork at the time for DONDA, personally one of my favorite covers he’s ever had made. Not much was said about the album for two months while fully submerging into his presidential candidacy, until late September when he gave us the poorly named snippet for his recent tweets, Believe What I Say. As the 2020 election grew closer, Kanye West released the official theme song for his campaign called Nah Nah Nah, complete with verses by DaBaby and 2 Chainz. When he announced he’d be running for president in 2020 before Pablo, the former sentence didn’t seem like it’d become reality. After his concession, it appeared DONDA was completely shelved as no new developments came towards the turn of the year, soon to be followed by family turmoil resonating with his name online at the start of 2021, as news broke that Kim Kardashian filed from divorce from Kanye. While some fans at the time turned this into hope for new music, CyHi the Prynce ended up confirming this by early March that Kanye had indeed gone back to working on DONDA. Months later, this turned into concrete evidence as posted by Consequence on Instgram video of Tyler, The Creator and a masked Kanye working on music with a tracklist in the background.. A day later, in the most respectful manner, full confirmation that DONDA exists came from Justin LaBoy after a listening session in Las Vegas with “production light years ahead of it’s time, and the bars sound like he’s broke & hungry trying to get signed again.” And if that wasn’t direct confirmation that something was to come soon, Pusha T posted on his Instagram the day after that a listening event was coming to Atlanta Thursday July 22nd. The hype train was fully set in motion by a Beats commercial premiered during game 6 of the NBA finals, confirming a DONDA release date of July 23rd, lining up for just after the listening party.
Donning a red suit and army face mask, Kanye sold out Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz stadium to premiere rough versions of 15 tracks that would make the album. The two hour delay for the entire event didn’t help, but when Ye finally emerged, he came to the center to drop to his knees in prayer-like form, under a spotlight. This performance was not his most involved, as Ye never carried a microphone nor addressed the crowd, only playing formless stems of what was assumed to be a completed project to drop that same night. He repeatedly dropped to his knees, seemingly to look up to God for answers at questions he never conveyed directly, only briefly through some of the more somber songs such as Never Abandon Your Family. The most notable positive reactions came from Hurricane and Praise God, ending with the long awaited reunion of Kanye and Jay-Z on wax, with Jail.
Of course, the album never dropped that night. Instead, Kanye lived out the Phantom of the Opera, living out of Mercedes-Benz stadium, affirming his ties to the city of Atlanta which is his actual birthplace, not Chicago. Another Beats commercial, and another album listening event/release date pairing were set for the evening of August 5th. The flare was kicked up a notch for the second showing, with most participants of the show and Kanye himself wearing DONDA fitted vests that were seen in clips of his stay the 2 weeks between listening parties. Kanye loves his bed and his mama, and they together took center stage to start the show. This second showing was lauded for having upgraded the sonic quality of the music, with clear bass and smooth high frequencies resonating through the stadium and the crowd. This listening party seemed to be a medley of high points throughout his career, blending notes and sequences from 808s and Heartbreaks, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, The Life of Pablo, and elements of Jesus is King. The breadth of range in the tracks and standout performances from new collaborators such as Fivio Foreign, Roddy Ricch, and Griselda displayed the growth from the first listening session. With an overall gospel feel, yet hip hop in spirit, Kanye ended the show by seemingly floating to the heavens to the tune of No Child Left Behind. Overall a great show, but still no album after.
As speculative album release dates were tweeted and posted and changed by streaming services, the only certainty was that Kanye was now going to bring the spectacle back to Chicago, and this time putting even more effort into the stage and show aesthetics. Kanye rebuilt his childhood home, which has now become a tourist attraction in Chicago, and had several special guests stand and sit upon his porch. He derived the most scrutiny from the choice of guests, including DaBaby who recently brought upon himself backlash from the LGBT community for an on stage outlash against gays, as well as Marilyn Manson who is facing a series of rape and sexual assault allegations, both of whom were now associated with the album release and his childhood home. The erratic decisions coincided with some of his inclusions and removals from the songs heard before, such as seemingly kicking off Jay-Z, Kid cudi, The LOX, and Conway entirely off the project. The dark, brooding vibes continued the whole show with black masks and clothes covering most of the guests and those marching around his home. By the time Kanye got to Pure Souls and raps “this the new me, so get used to me,” his childhood home engulfs in flames with him inside. By the time Come To Life cues, Kanye is fully on fire and begging not to die alone. As he slowly walks off the flames, No Child Left Behind’s church organs bellow the stadium as the spotlight shines on a white-hooded figure, Kim Kardashian in a Balenciaga wedding dress. As she walks, she meets a maskless Kanye, who we hadn’t seen in months at this point, re-enacting their wedding, in what seemingly was both a rebirth of his life and marriage.
At this stage, the album was set to release on September 3rd, 2021, coinciding with the release of Drake’s Certified Lover Boy. However, the album seemed to finally come sooner than the announced date, as it suddenly appeared on streaming services the Sunday morning after the last listening event, and the world could finally listen to what was meant to be the official release of DONDA, despite claims from Kanye that it was released without his permission.
Review by Kitchen_Ur_Lies
Coming in at 1 hour and 48 minutes, 27 tracks, 30+ features, and 3 listening parties, the original album entered Kanye’s discography as his longest studio album to date. This was eclipsed on November 14th when the deluxe was released with an additional 5 tracks, and a new runtime of 2 hours and 11 minutes. Both the original and the deluxe contain several “part 2s” which are the same titled songs but with inclusions or swaps of featured guests, bloating the runtime and track list, yet with purpose. I viewed this as Kanye creating his most “customizable” album to date, allowing the listener to pick what the best version of a track is, and the lack of a proper cover art lends itself to that theory. Listeners are given the option to add their favorite version of a track to their playlists, whether it’s minute adjustments to production on a track like on Come to Life (Deluxe), or entire feature changes like on Jail pt 2. Most conventional deluxe albums will add the extra songs to the end of the project, but the deluxe also scrambles the track sequencing of the originally released album, even adding in “part 2s” to the middle of the project instead of at the end. The livestreaming of each listening party also made it very easy for avid fans (real ones like me) to snip and keep previous versions of the songs to use towards their personal library. This is further supported by Kanye simultaneously releasing an interactive stem player to control the vocals, drums, bass, and samples used in the album. A lot of high quality edits and blends (plugging this BEAUTIFUL Heaven & Hell edit here) have come about as a result of this, possibly to the greatest extent of any Kanye release yet, and amazing ones can be found at /Yedits. Since I did most of my listening to the original sequencing of the album, I’ll write in that order, but insert words about “part 2s” with the original tracks.
DONDA opens with Donda Chant, a meditative chant spoken by Syleena Johnson, whose history working with Ye dates back to All Falls Down. Repetitive mantras and prayers are common in several religions as a form of meditation, and using Donda’s name as the centerpiece to invoke this state lends to this album being dedicated to Donda. The ebbs and flows in how Donda is repeated resemble a drum or heartbeat, but unfounded claims that this was mimicking Donda’s final heartbeats have no substantial evidence.
Jail is the loud and abrasive opener to the themes of Donda, crisis and Christ. Backed by a blaring guitar riff reminiscent of “dad-rock,” Kanye uses the repetitive nature of the instrumentation and the hook to mirror the echoing thoughts he’s having at this point in life, complete with their grit. Having a highly publicized divorce from Kim Kardashian, Kanye is left in a frenzy as she breaks away and asks her to just take everything she wants. These lyrics are also an allegory for God to strip Kanye of possessions including wealth and family, similar to the Old Testament tale of Satan stripping those from Job. Themes of stripping and starting anew are explored many times throughout the project, with Kanye leaning on God for the rebirth portion of this cycle.

Whatever metaphorical jail Kanye finds himself in, he leans on God to save him, including the fragile mental state a divorce would likely put him through. Having changed his phone number to avoid hearing Kim’s sides of things to preserve personal well-being, to looking at the bright side thinking “single life ain’t so bad,” Kanye reinforces that he’ll be alright as long as he’s with God. Kanye employs one of the most lauded rappers ever and his big brother, Jay-Z, to confirm his affirmations.

Jay paints the picture of the jail cell more vividly, and Kanye took this a step further in the second listening party livestream by showing his living quarters. Continuing the themes of despoiling oneself, they’re both left to nothing more than their image others and God have given them. In Jay’s terms, that’s a selfie. Some of my favorite wordplay in the album comes with the simple line of “pray five times a day, so many felonies.” Jay is clearly referencing the Muslim practice of Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha throughout the day, but is exchanging his sins as felonies that must be made right before God. As Muslims fall to their knees in each prayer, Jay hopes to cleanse his “fell on knees.” He also takes this time to tease the return of The Throne, since Kanye has “stopped all of that red cap”, signaling another new beginning. Jail pt 2 enlists Marilyn Manson and DaBaby, both fresh off controversy themselves. Marilyn Manson’s inclusions are reciting the hook along with Kanye, and in my opinion have no place on the album, as his heinous allegations plus the fact Kanye did fine on the hook alone with the choir was ample already. As the track is echoing Kanye’s thoughts on starting anew, his original chorus already lent itself well to that. DaBaby took the golden opportunity to speak for himself as he felt the full backlash of unsavory homophobic comments at Rolling Loud this August. The money lost after being dropped from three upcoming festivals equated to food being taken off his daughters’ tables, and he reminds us of his harrowing past and upbringing that would lend to him being nothing more than a product of his environment, yet he still managed to rise out of it. As he took the fall for his remarks, he stands on his position and says if he’s “guilty, guess they gon’ have to take me” to jail tonight. Soon after this verse came out, Kirk ended up meeting with HIV-Awareness organizations to learn about the impact HIV has on both the black and LGBT communities. Both versions of Jail end with a raucous drum medley akin to some of the drums on Love Lockdown, leading us out of the monotony of recurrent thoughts and sounds felt throughout the track.
For God Breathed, Kanye continues themes of repetitive nature in calling on God to cleanse his actions and provide guidance for the future. The title likely references 2 Timothy 3:16, which states,

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness

As the last track divested Kanye, he’s taken a new turn and admits he may not know everything, all he knows is that God breathed on this. By telling the listener that God’s doing more than he himself can put into words, he reminds us to look at what he has done long before there were sons and daughters and sun and water. He cues his divorce once more, saying that putting besides the lawyer fees and loyalties, God will solve it all for him. The entire time he recites these chants, the soundscape built around the track is reminiscent of I Am A God, with a thunderous bass backing harsh bellows after every other bar, mirroring the menacing drums in the former track. Vory acts as a conduit for Kanye’s renewed thinking

Devil on my shoulders, I can’t let em breathe

Okay, now they want the old me…
I know that you’d be proud if you was here today

Reflecting on his past relationship with God on wax, such as telling God he’ll “be back in a minute” on Can’t Tell Me Nothing, to featuring him on the previously mentioned I Am A God, to how he reveres him once more. As people ask for the old Kanye, and a lot did ask for secular music after Jesus Is King, he recites how greedy that is considering he’s now doing what he feels is best for him. The last lines are certainly talking to the eponymous Donda, who Kanye’s well-documented grief from losing her has transformed him since late 2007. As of this track he’s now a billionaire with four kids he’s proud of, giving him the solace that he’s made her proud by now. He allows the track to literally breathe for 2 more minutes after these last lines are said, staying faithful to the song’s name.
Off The Grid explains Kanye’s actions for everything he’s done in his life so far. Everything had purpose, and is the perfect leadup to God Breathed, since he’s not doing everything just for his four kids, but for their grandkids, and when they have kids. Going off the grid means being divisive, separating yourself, and otherwise not being complacent. In the literal sense, Kanye moving to Wyoming in 2018, the least populous state in the United States is the contra to living in Los Angeles the past few years. In addition, people have either ostracized or praised his behavior throughout his career. Kanye finds himself to be heaven sent, and while he may not speak exactly what he meant, he doesn’t hide his intent. He’s done divisive actions ranging from calling out George Bush for his Katrina efforts or lack thereof, stopping an award winner from giving her thank you speech, calling out the fashion industry for blackballing him, or endorsing Trump and verbally saying “400 years of slavery sounds like a choice to me.” His intent was unmistakable with each action, and even after the backlash of each, he never faltered in changing the stance. And through this outlook, he was able to bring his life in a direction he couldn’t have reached without it. Someone else who tends to be on novel trends in music and fashion is Playboi Carti, whose contribution does bring light to an artistic direction made throughout the album; no cursing. In a Drink Champs interview, he revealed this was because his eldest daughter North wanted no cussing on the album. Many guest verses on this album including the Carti one detract a bit due to the decision, but it doesn’t seem like something that will be updated in the future even though an explicit version does exist. Carti’s verse is fun and a bit of an ode to his lifestyle, tatts, his new kid, and more fashion. The apex of this track (and first half of the album for that matter) is subtly introduced as the track’s heavy, brooding 808s are exchanged for a higher pitched 808 with fast kicking drum pattern evocative of Brooklyn drill. Keen listeners would notice the drill instrumental taking over, and are met with the voice of Fivio Foreign, who arguably gave his standout performance of his career, akin to something Kanye has done for other artists, such as Nicki Minaj on Monster and Rick Ross on Devil in a New Dress early in their careers. Fresh off a 3 month stint in jail on gun charges, Fivio entered a cell once more, though this time with Kanye and a microphone. And in there, they found fire. Carrying Kanye’s Christian themes further, Fivio describes how his sentence didn’t make him lose faith once, as he prayed and felt God carry both feet, and now he stands as a God-like figure. He decisively pronounces his mental fortitude after his jail stint and now feels marvelous, almost like they let the monster loose. Contrasting DaBaby’s claims of being a product of his environment, Fivio emphatically says he’s “what God produced.” Praying is central to Fivio’s MO just like Kanye as well as he knows his old friends pray they settle their differences, while he prays they lower his current friends’ sentences. The main draw of Fivio’s verse is how he decides to enunciate certain words or play around with ad libs, stating “and my car quicker” and delivering one of his signature SKRRRT ad libs. As he rises through the industry, having battled demons and rapping on Demons with Drake, the word of advice he has for newcomers is

If you got a voice then you gotta project it

Protecting your name and your figure are central to him, as he’s one of the two main Woo rappers that blew up in 2019, the other being his deceased collaborator and friend, Pop Smoke who was killed in February 2020. The release of Fivio’s verse came out to rave reviews in early August 2021, exactly a year after unfounded reports that Fivio himself was killed in Atlanta. Even after that, and especially the rave reviews, the previously undisturbed instrumental after his verse now came with a new Kanye verse at LP3 and on the album. He delves further into how his actions affect the grid, including his viral moments, and how he won’t do an interview to explain himself after the criticism takes place. He gets into why he wears a mask on his face to hide his next move, and his constant moving to get away from miserable people, something in his Drink Champs interview he revealed is because all he carries is a bag of his belongings and calls that “home.” Emphasizing his leverages in life are his God power, and the only beverages he drinks is Holy Water, this is perhaps the most effort in a Kanye rapping verse since the closer of TLOP, Saint Pablo.
Hurricane has been one of the most fluid tracks on this project, dating back to its inception in a Yandhi teaser from 2018 and several reworks since, including three distinctively different versions played at each listening party. The Yandhi leaks floating around have verses from Ant Clemons, Big Sean, Ty Dolla $ign, Young Thug, and 6ix9ine, but the two features on the final version didn’t come until years later. In a very erratic tweet storm around the time of DONDA’s original announcement, Kanye announced Meek is getting between him and Kim, Kris Jenner is Kris Jon-Un, but most importantly that Lil Baby is his favorite rapper but can’t get him on a song. Thankfully this was a false alarm as Baby just didn’t know, and so he was flown out to Cody, Wyoming to record his verse the next day. A year later, this verse surfaced at the first listening party along with a Kanye verse and hook on Hurricane, only for the week after that The Weeknd revealing in a GQ interview that he’d love to work with Kanye again. Calls were promptly made, and The Weeknd’s lyric tenor is risen to belt high resonant notes within the fifth octave for the same picturesque hook we’ve heard many renditions of. The beauty in this version is how the choir compliments The Weeknd’s voice, appearing intermittently with harsh distortion on the production, simulating the wash of a wave, like in a hurricane. Surfing on that wave comes Lil Baby, delivering some humble bars showing how his hunger drove him to success. With each hook, The Weeknd delivers exceedingly piercing vocals to punctuate the point that God is looking over all of us as the rain falls. Kanye takes over the weather report, recounting God making it rain, while the devil makes it hail, and above all how he prevailed. The gem of this track is the progression of the simple trap drums we get in the intro, to the organs throughout the track melding trap with the gospel tone of the album. The closed hat panning across the stereo range mimics debris being kicked around in a hurricane, and they vanish as a break in the storm happens, with the best way I can describe this as Hurricane seems to be the inspiration for this cover art.
In the released track sequencing, Praise God is the first track to include vocal excerpts from Donda herself. In late October 2007, Dr. West gave her last public speech as an honored guest at a poetry conference hosted by her alma mater, Chicago State University. In this, she talks about the writing process of her book on raising Kanye, and how social consciousness, racial injustice, and black youth empowerment influenced her relationship with him. The first excerpt appearing on Praise God is her reciting a poem from Gwendolyn Brooks, which effectively is about perseverance through hardship in the context of the next generation of blacks, but it could also be interpreted as Kanye pushing through the grief of losing his mother among other tribulations that have come now. The transition from Donda’s speech to Travis and Kanye shaking off the devil over thunderous bass claps is such a moment on the album, that it’s become viral on Tiktok since release and has catapulted this song to the best performing on the album to date. The eerie hums from Travis, evocative of his transitory hums on 90210, mark the transition all three are taking from forgotten faith or “spiritual death”, to becoming spiritually alive and reborn by praising God, using direct imagery from the Valley of Dry Bones in the Old Testament. This sets the stage for Baby Keem to start his Tame Impala shoutout habit and even delivering a clever bar about how most believers of God only use him like renter’s insurance, only in their time of need, and not revering Him when things are going well.
Jonah is dedicated in namesake to Jonah Ware, a 19-year-old musician and advocate against gun violence who was killed in Louisville, KY. Knowing this context, the melancholic instrumental and hook that drives the track is reserved for a sulking mood.

Like who’s here when I need a shoulder to lean on?

And it’s not fair that I had to fight ‘em all on my own

Vory reflects on the feelings of loneliness and solitude as he’s left to fight his mental despair or “demons” on his own without his significant other. This could be applied to Kanye’s current state, both in losing his mother and having to figure his tribulations on his own, or his current divorce and the betrayal that sets in his mind. Durk’s contribution signifies this as a tribute to victims of gun violence and their loved ones, as Durk himself lost one of his signed artists and close associates King Von in November 2020, closely followed by his own blood brother Dontay Banks Jr. in June 2021. While Kanye and Jay as brothers were able to keep their bond until they both became billionaires, Durk’s brothers were stopped at just millionaires. Kanye also tries to dead the “smoke an opp pack” slang that’s proliferated the internet and gang cultures in recent years for its blatant disrespect of the dead.
Ok Ok is honestly the most ok ok song on the project, as its about backstabbing and betrayal in the music industry from the perspectives of Kanye, Lil Yachty, Rooga, and Fivio Foreign through his aggressive ad libs. Kanye is taking pretty direct jabs at Drake, with probably his most Drake sounding melodies in the project for both his verse and the hook. Lil Yachty’s portion has hums that seem to build up to something but fizzle out by the end of his verse. Rooga hops on to claim they closed the door on him, after just reminding us they done let the GDs in the door. Ok Ok pt 2 swaps Yachty for Shenseea, who has the most interesting contribution by playing with her Patois tongue on the beat more playfully than everyone else.
An ode to their passion for fashion, Kanye and Playboi Carti reunite to give a tribute to Junya Watanbe, a Japanese designer closely associated with Comme des Garçons. The most bass distorting 808s are found on this track to compliment the braggadocious themes Carti and Kanye rap on. Kanye can’t seem to find any misses in his discography, while Carti recounts having hits the past 5 summers. The prominent organ makes a reappearance here and gives the track a fun flair in addition to the clap, but this also makes the reappearance of Drake shots which watered down both their projects. He warns Drake to stay off his release, even though Kanye is the one that’s instigated for months he wants to dorp the same day as Drake.
Believe What I Say is an ironic title coming from a guy who always delays the work to his fans, so it’s the perfect track to sample another amazing artist who also gives their fans the constant bait and switch for her shows, Lauryn Hill. He originally wanted to sample her back on The College Dropout for All Falls Down, but ended up going with Syleena Johnson to re-sing the vocal portions for sample clearance issues. This time he samples her biggest solo hit, Doo Wop (That Thing)) with ease, and far more involved than last time. The bounce of the track gives an idea of how much fun Kanye had playing with it on an MPC. Playing on his speech, he recites that most people don’t agree with his method of delivering his message, that he now feels he needs to get across and past his point to be satisfied. The beautiful melody pairs well with Kanye showing some improvement in his vocal performing during the hook.
24 might be the most heartfelt track on the album, dedicated to the late and great Kobe Bean Bryant, who was tragically killed with his daughter and seven others in a helicopter crash January 26th, 2020. The shock was felt around the world and as tributes poured out, it did inspire art in some musical minds. He enlists his Sunday Service Choir to invoke the pain and enlightenment of the mourning victims. As they wallow over the same 24 hours we’re all given and how there’s never a right time to go, Kobe’s memory is left to 24 candles found in tributes across the world. Kanye has used God to talk to his mother throughout music since her passing, and the choir uses Him as a conduit once again, speaking to Kobe saying that he’s still alive because God’s never finished. Not allowing the grief to consume anymore, optimism shines and the choir chants that we’ll be ok as the organ resolves into the refrain. It’s also worth noting this is one of the few tracks with a video on the album, giving us perspective on where Kanye went after floating out of Mercedes-Benz stadium. As the song transitions from cries of salvation to personal content, Kanye wanders towards images of his late mother and finally reaches peace once he makes it to Heaven and sees everything will be alright.
At this point I need to break up the review into the comments due to reddit’s character limit per post, but I’ll give my final thoughts here. Overall, Donda is the most refreshing entry to Kanye’s legendary discography almost 20 years after its inception, and easily the best since The Life Of Pablo. Elements of his entire discography come into play, sampling different notes and flavors of tracks to produce a sonically diverse, yet thematically focused project. At a point in his career and life filled with his highest peaks of financial success, and familial woes and lows, Donda acts as a therapeutic channel for Kanye to grieve, mourn, and rejoice all at the same time. The listening parties added to the hype for me, with each version successively improving or altering my expectations of the final product, while also giving me and the internet creative freedom over the versions to listen to.

You know how some people totally peak in high school? How you just know that they have reached their apex and this is all they will ever have?
I’m talking about the cheerleader who you just know is gonna start smoking, have kids and get fat (usually in that order) and perpetuate the cheerleader cycle by having a daughter and living through her. Yes, I mean YOU, Jessica.
And then there is that guy that is the star on the football team who had a head full of rocks. Sometimes he has a sweet deal and lands a job in Dad’s auto dealership and sells Fords for a living and never really has to do anything but ride those sweet family coattails. Or sometimes he is a complete douche who goes and gets his girlfriend pregnant, gets stuck in a dead end job and does nothing but drink beer and complain about the government. Yes I mean YOU, Todd.
You two deserve each other.
But sometimes the people you meet in high school have a brilliant future ahead of them.
I have already told the story of on again/off again Queens of the Stone Age and TCV member Alain Johannes, who attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles.
You will remember from that write up that Johannes’ high school band kicked out their bassist and replaced him with a trumpet player named Michael Balzary. Johannes’s band also had a funny looking kid named Tony act as their warm up, their opener, their Paul Bettany in A Knight’s Tale herald.
Yup. That bassist was Flea, and that herald was Anthony Kiedis.
National California day is THIS monday, Feb. 22nd. Oh yeah - you already know what band we’re looking at today. It’s time to talk about the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS.
About Them
Do you like California?
If not, this is going to be a long week for you.
As I mentioned, Anthony Kiedis (and the scruffy roots of his porn star mustache) went to Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. But what you may not have known is this dude is actually from Michigan. No shit, truth. I thought for sure he was not really born but sort of emerged as a youth somewhere from the LaBrea Tar Pits.
You also know that Michael Balzary - AKA Flea - went to that same school and played trumpet. What you may not know is this guy is also not from California. It turns out that his dad was Hungarian and his mom was Irish, and the dude was born in Australia.
Oh sorry, I mean ɐᴉlɐɹʇsn∀.
Anyway, we are 0-for-2 in the Cali camp. Balzary earned the nickname Flea in high school because he could not sit still, and it stuck. Fuck am I glad not all high school nicknames stay with you. If they did, you’d have some idea why Todd and Jessica have earned my everlasting hatred. Mike B the Flea met Kiedis at school, and played bass for Alain Johannes’ band.
Hillel Slovak was also in Johannes’ band. He also attended Fairfax High School. Was this dude from California? Fuck no. He was the child of Holocaust survivors and was born in Israel. He spent his formative years in New York and then his family moved to LA. Slovak picked up a guitar at age 13. He quickly got good at it and was so proficient a player that he was able to teach Mike B the Flea - a trumpet guy - how to play bass. Slovak must have been an amazing teacher because Flea has become arguably the best bass player in the world.
The drummer in that same band was a guy named Jack Irons. Unlike Johannes (Chile) and Slovak (Israel) and Balzary (KangarooDropBearland) he was actually born and raised in California. The name of Johannes’ band was Anthym (which is like the most edgy teen name ever). After high school they changed their name to What is This?
Since most high school bands don’t last, it was remarkable that this one had some post-school staying power. They toured up and down the coast of California but did not get a big break. They continued the grind.
But in 1983, on a lark, Slovak and Balzary and Irons from What is This? joined Kiedis on stage for a one-off show. They called themselves Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem.
Oh god and I thought the other name was edgy. This name only needed clown makeup or face masks to take that particular throne. Moving on.
Anyway, the ¼ California band had a hit performance. Kiedis was a natural on stage and while he could not sing (more like rap or tonal speech) he sure as hell could command a stage. The foursome decided to rename themselves (thank god) and settled on Red Hot Chili Peppers (wtf man, I thought the other name was out there....well at least it is not an Ayn Rand novel I guess.) RHCP played a bunch of shows and quickly got a cult following, and even recorded a demo tape, and then got a manager, and then even got a record deal.
Great, right?
Nope. Turns out What is This? got a record deal too. After some soul searching, Slovak and Irons left RHCP for their original band, leaving Kiedis and Flea on their own.
No matter. Kiedis and Flea recruited drummer Cliff Martinez (originally from New York) and guitarist Jack Sherman (from Miami) into the band, cut their first album, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and embarked on a grueling tour in support of it.
There were drugs a-plenty on this tour of 60 shows in 64 days. The boys used pot, meth, heroin, LSD, and cocaine and anything they could get a hold of. They were chaotic and energetic and wild. But the tour was full of conflict and infighting. Kiedis and Sherman just did not connect. Sherman started recording the next album with the band, but things did not last. Before recording was done, he was out and Slovak, who had just quit What is This?, was back in.
This was great news for Kiedis and Balzary, but even better news for the local heroin dealer. Slovak had become a seriously heavy heroin user. In fact, the recording of their next album, Freaky Styley, was dominated by heroin use. The album, recorded in Kiedis’ home state of Michigan, is super Funky and no-shit features the song Yertle the Turtle and credits Dr. Seuss as the writer. Which I guess he was. Bottom line: the album was a drug fueled Funky and messy party.
It was not very successful. Flea would later say that it was “too Funky for white radio, too Punk Rockin' for black.” But it was a huge step forward in production values and the band had taken a dive into their signature genre, even if they had not quite found their sound.
Kiedis and Slovak continued to fall deep into the hypnotic pool of heroin. While the band tried to hire legendary beard record producer Rick Rubin (who seems to turn up in a lot of these write ups for some reason) for their third effort, he declined because the drug use was just too prominent. I mean, if the bearded wonder backs away from you and instead gets in a car with Jay-Z, you know you done fucked up.
The band did not get their shit together (I mean, like, not at all) but they did get Jack Irons back and did find Michael Beinhorn to produce their next album. Recording went poorly and the band actually fired Kiedis for a period of time while The Uplift Mofo Party Plan was being recorded. He was hired back on promises of sobriety, but during recording was frequently absent while he was trying to score some drugs (presumably somewhere below an elevated road crossing, where he made himself hemorrhage or something.
Nonetheless, the album was made. The standout track Fight Like a original land owner Brave (umm, questionable choice there boys) propelled the band to some serious airplay, and the album was a success. They had found their sound. A tour soon followed and their cult following grew into a real fanbase. They were poised for breakthrough success.
But then Slovak died of a heroin overdose.
Fuck.
It almost broke the band. Irons quit, because he did not want to be part of a group where his friends were dying. He would make his way north to Seattle and joined Pearl Jam in 1994. Kiedis and Flea almost packed it in right there. Kiedis, who was still a heavy heroin user, could not bring himself to even attend Slovak’s funeral. He left LA instead.
At this crossroads, with one friend dead and another who had left, Flea and Kiedis ultimately decided to forge on. Kiedis went into rehab for 30 days. After some misfires, the band recruited John Frusciante (from New York) into the band to play guitar and Will Ferrell Chad Smith (Minnesota) to play drums. So the California loving band was now composed of three dudes from back east and one from DidgeridooBoomerangland.
Frusciante was a massive fan of the band and had idolized Slovak to the point of learning all the guitar and bass parts from the first three albums already, so he was an easy fit. He had incredible technical talent on the guitar as well as a uniquely atmospheric and melodic sound. The contrast between his soaring and weaving guitar play and Flea’s punchy, Funky bass was perfect.
Smith grew up listening to Rock music, and was a huge Rush fan. I mean, most drummers are, because Neal Peart was a god. But Smith’s Rock influence completed the alt-music set in the band. Funky bassist, Artsy guitarist, Rap vocals, Total drumming. Yep, that spells FART.
I know, it should be FARR, for Rock drums, but fart was right there and I am a juvenile idiot who just went for it.
The net result was that this foursome went into the studio and, with Beinhorn again, recorded Mother’s Milk. The sound was something different - more Metal guitar lines and emphasis on melody than the more Funky predecessors, but at the same time very, very different than anything else on the radio. The singles Knock Me Down and Taste the Pain got a bunch of airplay, but the band absolutely exploded onto MTV with their cover of Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground.
Yeah, I could have made a ‘Stevie never saw that one coming’ joke right there, but jokes about the blind are only funny when Mark Lanegan tells them to go get fucked.
Mother’s Milk made the band a bonafide hit. And their backstory made them hugely interesting. They became media darlings and drew huge crowds. Fame beckoned and they got on the festival circuit as well. They were not only unique; they turned out to be amazing performers - even with two brand new members.
They were ready to go to the next level. They were ready for Rick Rubin.
And boy did Rubin deliver. He got the band to record their new record in the mansion once owned by Harry Houdini. Frusciante, Flea, and Kiedis actually lived in the house during recording, with Smith arriving every day on his motorcycle. With Kiedis not leaving to go score some heroin, and the magic of Rubin’s wizard beard, the recording sessions just flowed. They even filmed some of their sessions and released a documentary movie.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the album that was recorded with Houdini’s ghost, was massive. The singles Give it Away and Suck My Kiss and Breaking the Girl and Under the Bridge and If You Have to Ask propelled the Chili Peppers to worldwide stardom. The band was everywhere on the radio. The record is largely regarded not only as their best, but perhaps the best they will ever make.
Rubin’s huge contribution to the sound was to refocus the guitar work to be more melodic and atmospheric rather than the driver of the tune - something much better aligned with Frusciante’s style. If you know their music, you know that the song hooks, chord progression, and heavy lifting is largely done by Flea on the bass. This was their signature sound - with the bass pushing the song and the guitar coloring between the notes, not the other way around as it is in most groups. Rubin also pushed Kiedis to a place where his lyrics were more vulnerable and authentic than in the past. Kiedis actually sings rather than just raps on this album. Rubin had the band create more structured songs rather than impromptu jams. There were no Yertle the Turtle songs on this disc. The net result was something less Funky and Punky, but still the Chili Peppers - just more polished and refined.
The tour for Blood Sugar Sex Magik was unlike anything they’d done before. Fame enveloped them. They became one of the most successful bands of the 90’s.
This was good, right?
Wrong.
Frusciante was unable to cope with the new fame the band experienced. He was totally unprepared for it. He started experimenting with (wait for it....) heroin. He was close friends with actor River Phoenix and also saw him OD and die.
I think we’ve heard this song before. Kiedis and Flea were both avid drug users, with Flea allegedly being high at every single show the band did. But Kiedis had gotten sober for a time, and Flea was if not sober, at least more under control. Frusciante was not able to manage the addiction.
As a huge fan of Slovak, Frusciante knew what road he was headed down. He did not want to end up dead. Instead, he quit the band. He grappled with his demons for a number of years, and still recorded music, but it wasn’t until the late 90’s that he finally got clean. He still has injection scars and permanent abscesses.
While Frusciante was descending into squalor, the band needed a guitarist. Chad Smith suggested Dave Navarro from the band Jane’s Addiction. Navarro had been a guitar player since he was 7 and brought a completely different sensibility to the role, even when playing Slovak’s or Frusciante’s licks. When the band went into the studio, again with Rick Rubin, they ran into immediate problems. Navarro questioned the jamming that the Chili Peppers did in their process rather than constructing their songs track by track.
Kiedis and Flea had creatively sparked with Slovak and then Frusciante to write music, but that spark was just not the same with Navarro, perhaps because he already had four albums to his credit with another successful band already. To complicate things further, Kiedis had dental surgery and was given valium for the pain. The valium caused him to relapse hard. These factors made the recording of One Hot Minute, their sixth album, difficult for all. The band made another documentary of the process but never released it.
While the album was successful in its own right, it was still considered a major disappointment by many because it came nowhere near the success of its predecessor. Cough Lullabies cough. Fans saw it as a poor follow up, despite the decent success of the singles Aeroplane and Warped and My Friends.
This lineup of the band also contributed a cover version of the song Love Rollercoaster to the soundtrack of the monumental landmark film Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. Truly a masterpiece of western cinema. Flea and Navarro both played on Alanis Morrisette’s You Outta Know, which you were legally mandated to listen to in 1995.
Despite a decently received tour and the fact that Flea joined Navarro on a reunion tour with Jane’s Addiction in 1997, the guitarist was fired from Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1998 due to creative differences. To this day he remains the least popular guitar player the band has had, to the point where hard core fans shudder when you mention his name.
RHCP seemed to have a Spinal Tap-esque progression of axe men. Fortunately for everyone, Frusciante managed to sober up and move past his fears of fame. He rejoined the band and their sound immediately returned to what it was on Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The Peppers once again turned to Rick Rubin to produce their next effort, Californication. With Frusciante back and Rubin at the helm, melodic guitar lines driven by the rhythm section of Flea and Smith returned. Their sound was again less Funk and Punk and more Rock or Alt or Progressive Rock.
The result was their most commercially successful album. An ode to the ‘edge of the world and all of Western civilization’, the record spawned the hit singles Scar Tissue and Around the World and Parallel Universe and Californication. The band embarked on a massive world tour and played to incredible crowds, including one of over 200,000 fans in Red Square in Moscow.
The band continued their progression in sound with their 2002 release, By the Way. Kiedis had again gotten sober, and the band had moved past most of their drug dependency. Again produced by Rubin, this album was an even mellower take by the Chili Peppers. It was way more subdued than previous releases, and had lyrics from Kiedis that were highly introspective. Think Under the Bridge Getting Scar Tissue, the Album kind of introspection. There was very little of the Punky Funk energy that powered the band in the past.
This pivot (don’t you hate that word right now?) in style got all kinds of praise from some critics, and was seen as part of the band’s mature progression. Songs like By the Way and Can’t Stop and The Zephyr Song were hits and kept them in heavy rotation on the radio. However, some fans and critics still longed for the dangerous and drug fueled band of the past. At one point even Flea expressed concern to Frusciante about what he felt was the erosion of the band’s core sound. The tour in support of the album was incredibly successful and profitable, but still left Flea contemplating leaving the band that he was the only continuous member of.
The band wanted to recapture their signature sound and energy. They again engaged Rubin to produce their next effort. The sage rock guru decided to recapture the Magik and recruit Houdini’s ghost back into the band. The foursome went back to the mansion to record the massive double album Stadium Arcadium. The album was their first one to go to number one on the Billboard 200. More upbeat and Funky, with more aggressive guitar work, it brought much more energy back to the Peppers and satisfied the moshing fan base.
The record spawned the singles Snow (Hey Oh) and Hump de Bump, among others. Dani California spent 14 weeks at number one. Notably, in an era of digital recording, everything on this album was done on tape. Rubin the production wizard had conjured another amazing hit record from the band. The Peppers embarked on another world tour and played sold out shows all around the globe.
Following the conclusion of this tour, the band were burnt out and went on extended hiatus. During this time, Frusciante again quit the band. His solo work and his desire to explore other musical forms drove the decision. He knew that the Chili Peppers had a distinctive sound and he wanted to explore other things entirely. This led to a decade long dive on his part into solo work, collaborations, and electronic music.
During the break, Smith worked with Sammy Hagar and his band Chickenfoot. Flea joined the supergroup Atoms for Peace. Kiedis took time off to be a father. And why not? They had made all kinds of cake and had been touring and performing since the 1980’s. The break was long overdue.
When the boys felt refreshed enough to enter the studio with Rubin again, they did so with Josh Klinghoffer on guitar. Klinghoffer had been the touring backup guitarist so he was not Dave Navarro an easy fit for the band. Stylistically he was very similar to Frusciante. The recording sessions resulted in the album I’m with You. This was another success and debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200.
The album again spawned a number of singles, including The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie and Brendan’s Death Song and Look Around. The tour in support kicked off in 2012 and continued into 2013. Since it was their first tour since 2007, audiences were thrilled and packed stadiums. They were back, and the concerts were good. They even released bootlegs of these shows for fans.
The boys carried this renewed enthusiasm and momentum back into the studio to record their eleventh studio album, The Getaway. This one broke the long beard streak of Rubin productions, as the band turned to Danger Mouse instead. The choice was made, the band said, to be inspired by someone new. I guess sometimes you gotta shake things up.
There were immediate problems getting started. Flea broke his arm snowboarding (pfft - all the best people ski anyway. Fight me.) and that set things back eight months. But when the band were able to get into recording, they quickly had another hit on their hands. Like its predecessor, it debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200. The song Dark Necessities powered the release and was another bonafide hit. The tour in support began in 2016 and finished in 2017 and was over 150 shows.
The most recent Chili Peppers news that all fans know is that in late 2019 Klinghoffer, after a decade or so in the band, had left in an amicable split. He started a solo career and both Flea and original band drummer Jack Irons played on the album. The Peppers announced that Frusciante had rejoined the band in December of 2019. They have been working on new material since January 2020, and even performed live with Frusciante again - but then the apocalypse happened.
We can all hope that a new record is coming soon.

My husband (52) and I (51) lost our home after I had cancer so we moved back in with my father. We both work and before we did we took great pains to make sure we were not a burden on him and more than paid our way. We've taken over the all houshold bills, except the taxes on the house, get and cook our own food and Dad likes having people around if he needs help with stuff. He asked us to stay until the time came for me to divide his truct after his death.
After we bought a ticket for her, my SIL(54) came down to FL to watch our animals (she was living in SC at the time) while we went to Texas for a family reunion. It was the first time my father had all three of his girls and their extended families together at the same time in 30 years so it was kind of a big deal. When we returned, my SIL told us the people she was living with told her not to come back. They would send her stuff in the mail and that would be that. My Dad (80), my husband (52), yes it's his sister, and I sat down and discussed this and we decided that she could stay for a short while until she had some money saved and found a place for herself. All that I have asked of her is that she perform some light housekeepingso taht my father would not have to do it. Dad will take everything on himself if its not done fast enough. She didn't have to pay rent but she would have to pay for her own groceries and medicines. I work close to home so I have shared my car so that she could get to dr appointments and whatnot. She was told that if she was going to drive she would need to pay for some of the car insurance to put her on my policy.
To her defence she is disabled and living on Disability. She only gets 700 a month. She has COPD, and Cold induced Asthma. She has exema and rashes from the her allergies.
It's been 4 years now. I've tried to make deadlines and ultimatums but things got pushed back when she got overian cancer and then lung cancer. She has over come everything and other than the Asthma and COPD she's pretty healthy now.
I don't know how much more I can take. She's bleeding me and my husband dry. She stopped paying the car insuranceabout 9 months ago. She never pays when we order in. She occaissionally helps with groceries but mostly junk food and crap food. She gets offended when we have meals that she doesn't like but she won't cook more than 1 time a week. I had to really fuss to get that. She only cleans up if I give her specific tasks and then does so poorly so we won't ak her again. I asked her to do the dishes at least when someone other than her cooks. She fusses about doing them and acts like we just kicked her. My father likes having her around because she is good company for him while we are at work all day. When I give her a deadline to get her to start moving, Dad steps in and stops me.

EDIT: these are NOT sit down restaurants. they share the same kitchen’s as local buca di beppo’s, bettucini’s, and bravo! italian kitchen. you can only order the food for delivery via postmates, grubhub, mrbeast burger app, and the like.
edit 2: there are locations on the map that mr. beast tweeted that have old buca di beppo locations on it that have now since closed. my theory is that it’s a pre-covid map since mr. beast burger’s and buca di beppo are coming outta the same kitchen. some restaurants have closed down and the map isn’t updated. specifically Louisiana and Alaska - but i have seen several others as well

My JN-adopted father (I was adopted at 7 months, am POC and he is white) has been cut off. I feel a lot of things but mostly relief. Just thought I’d post it here since I think most people in my real life wouldn’t understand. I think one day I might be open to re-connecting but for now I feel a lot of relief.
Back story: He’s a marine and used to scream full-sound in my face when I was little. One time he picked me up by my arms and squeezed me so hard he left hand-shaped bruises on my arm.
I got over it, we had a relationship although not a great one, it was fine.
My dad moved to NY (I’m from FL) around 2011. Sometime around 2015, my grandparents had a family reunion, and my dad brought his new(ish?) girlfriend. That’s fine whatever. What was not fine was him prioritizing spending time with her the whole time. He spent so much time locked in the room with her instead of with me and I hadn’t seen him in person in actual years. It was so shitty and demeaning. I felt even less important than I usually did to him. But I decided to ignore and just get over it.
My grandma passed recently, and instead of literally anyone calling me, I found out through a post on my uncle’s Facebook. She was deteriorating but definitely had some time left. My JNdad knew but instead of calling me, he called my mom to have her tell me instead. Obviously shitty but I put it aside because everyone was mourning.
When we met up to clean her house out, he and his JNgf was acting like the trip to Florida was a vacation. For some weird ass reason he brought his JNgf over to my moms house (used to be their house together but they got divorced in line 2005???), and showed her around the house?? Whatever, it didn’t effect me so I was like ‘ignore!’ He was actually super late in coming down so we didn’t get to see each other than long. Also because the JNgf (after hearing that my mom was allergic to shellfish) continuously brought up that she wanted seafood. My JNdad ended up eating dinner with his gf, and my mom and I had dinner separately. He and his gf went back up to my grandmas house where they were staying. The next day, my mom and I drove up to my grandmas house to help empty stuff out. The first thing when we walk in is my JNdads JNgf packing my grandmas shit in boxes in the kitchen to take. I had to go through “her” piles of things to pick out a few trinkets to keep that reminded me of her and my grandpa (who passed about a year and a half prior). Eventually shit escalated and the JNgf ended up leaving the house and refusing to have dinner with us, so my mom, JNdad, and I ended up eating together. My JNdad was super angry at my mom and idk the whole thing was a shit show. I almost stopped talking to him after all that, but I was like no, don’t overreact, just chill and it’ll pass and be fine.
Then when the Trump train hit full throttle and he went FULL radical right (doesn’t believe in global warming, doesn’t understand how calling COVID-19 the Chinese Virus effects Asian Americans, doesn’t understand the effect of generalized misogyny effects woman). Now I understand that people disagree on politics. And I do have the opinion that you are racist/ableist/sexist/etc. or okay with those things if you vote for Trump. I get that is pretty intense but this presidency has been pretty intense. Either way, not what this post is about, don’t want comments about it. BUT I was even willing to IGNORE that entirely! But he kept bringing it up on his own. He kept commenting on my Facebook posts and bringing it up in phone calls. I was FINE just not talking about it but he just wouldn’t stop! And of course, I defended myself and my thoughts and refused to be called stupid, and it just felt like every interaction just got 10x harder than it already was. He would talk over me and just scream at me about it and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I sent him several articles multiple times (Facebook messenger and also email) with logical facts that disproved some things he was saying and he just didn’t respond to them. I felt like those were me giving him a chance to at least have a logical conversation but I really think he just wanted to argue.
So after the final straw of him commenting “fake news” I deleted him on fb. I waited to see what would happen - and NOTHING FOR TWO MONTHS! I don’t even know if it took him that long to notice or what! He tried to call me two weeks ago and I ignored, he left a voicemail as if everything was normal. He tried to call me last week again and I ignored and still was trying to act like it was normal!
I had been thinking of a good thing to write to him and I ended up texting this:
“I have never been more disappointed in you. Not even when you would scream in my face for hours. Not even when I had to hide the marks you left on my arms in elementary school. Not even when you only wanted to spend time with (JNgirlfriends name) at the family reunion. Not even when you let me find out about grandma's death over Facebook because you didn't want to call me to tell me what happened. Not even when (JNgirlfriends name) was an ass at my dead grandmas house and you defended her behavior.
I almost stopped talking to you after that but I thought "no, this will pass and everything will be fine if I can just tolerate it." But it's been fucking awful.
So now, I'm cutting you out of my life. I'm doing it for me, for my own state of mind. You didn't even notice for over two months so it shouldn't matter.
To be clear, you will not be meeting any future children I have. Why? Because they will be POC like me. You will not be a part of my life any longer. Why? Because I am a POC and you couldn't stop defending the racist piece of shit for the five minutes at most that we have a phone call. For the ten seconds it would take you to scroll past a post on Facebook. I didn't even ask you to not vote for him, you were always the one who consistently brought it up. You have done so so much to me throughout my life but this is unforgivable and I will not tolerate it anymore. You made your choices and this is the consequence. And I'm not sorry.”
